EDITOR'S LETTER AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2018

Injustice? Greeting readers this issue is a tad different from my usual format. There's a lot going on in the world today. The news or whatever data feed you choose is a constant barrage of bad things happening to innocent men, women and children that steals our innocence a little more as we navigate from one horrible event to the next. The ever-present reminder running in the background is that none of these things must happen, yet somehow, they continue to happen and expose the society we live in as a place teetering between civility and lawlessness with the thinnest measure for error. It seems to be that we are consistently challenged daily to stand by whatever morals, ethics, or belief systems that we embrace. With that said, we will also be standing on the right or wrong side of history depending on how our human compass navigates us. bI think many of us see these things and choose to turn a blind eye as not to be involved, and to rest in the safety of indifference. As many people know that with great influence or power comes a great responsibility to pursue the greater good and to champion those that have less of a voice. We do not shy away from this responsibility nor do we take it lightly. We've heard many people speaking of justice in the quiet comfort of their homes and businesses. In the cubicles or at the coffee cantina at their jobs. However, how many people are willing to speak up when it is not the popular thing to do like Colin Kaepernick did? When it could cost you everything including your good name, your finances, your safety and to possibly face a public ostracizing where a meal or a movie date could turn physical? The injustices are many, yet the voices are few, or too unorganized to disrupt the blaringly loud monotonous sound of human indifference. As for me, injustice seems to be weaved into our worldly fabric and one of the things I wanted to address was the injustices that we see every day, yet act is if it’s they are harsh and polarizing, however not a big deal. I asked some people what injustice meant to them and as you flip through this issue you will see the responses. bAs you can see, injustice means different things to different folks so then the question for me becomes if it has so many meanings how many solutions will it take to rid the world of injustice?

Look Good, Feel Better! Positive self image.

There are many opinions regarding how to improve self image but ultimately con'dence is the key to a positive self image. We must discover our worth and it is our individual responsibility as part of the human community to build, encourage, and uplift one another. I have found through my years of experience in the beauty industry, we do not truly transform people externally without impacting them internally.

Fall in Love with Self-care CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

It’s fall and the summer vacation has ended, and we are back to the school, work hustle & flow and we can’t forget football. Amid juggling responsibilities, I found myself overwhelmed and stressed. The time had come for some overdue selfcare, short on time and resources. I reached out to a close friend and fellow wellness provider for services. and I had to share my experience and self-care tips. After a very intense vent and cry session over books, bills, babies, and living single. She calmly asked had I ever considered a reiki session. I inquired what is reiki therapy? She then explained Reiki is energy work a non-touch form of massage. As we learned in school energy is neither created nor destroyed under the Laws of Conservation of Energy. The benefits of reiki are often used to promote healing, reduces stress, clears stuck energy, and help restore balance. The provider assisted me through a guided mediation, breathing techniques and then began the session. It took a minute to fully relax and really receive the treatment. My session began laying comfortably on my couch and lasted all of 15 minutes. cheakwoolfolk.com

Reiki Covers the Whole Body Reiki promotes healing and has beneficial effects on the body. This includes not only physical symptoms but also gives you relaxation, peace, well-being, and security. This is possible because a full Reiki treatment covers all organs, glands, and main energy centers of your body. Reiki functions in harmony with other types of treatment, so you can use it along with other therapies.

Reiki is a powerful source of healing that has many benefits and uses, even along with other therapies in many medical practices today. As an unlimited form of spiritual healing energy, Reiki can improve your overall health in many ways. The feeling was like I had a mini massage, my mood enhanced, I felt refreshed, as if I had just experienced a full body massage even though the provider never once touched me. As a wellness advocate myself, I highly recommend if you have never experience massage and are a little hesitant reiki is an excellent and noninvasive introduction to bodywork.

Balancing work and life is no small proposition, and when things heat up, it can be easy to let your normal self-care habits slide. While a busy lifestyle may not allow for luxurious weekly trips to the spa to rejuvenate, you can still steal moments to promote the wellbeing of your mind and body. Wake up with water. Staying properly hydrated is an important way to keep your body in top condition. Proper hydration can help keep all your body’s systems functioning like a well-lubricated machine. Some studies have even shown that starting the day with a cold glass of water can help jumpstart your metabolism and curb cravings. Carry water with you throughout the day so you can sip whenever the urge hits you and aim for at least 64 ounces a day. Take care of your skin. Hydration is important for your skin. Bring the bliss of a spa experience into your shower with a body wash like Softsoap Hydra Bliss Hydrating Body Wash, which is crafted with rejuvenating scents like Coconut Water and Blueberry or Cucumber Water and Mint. These formulas help retain your skin's natural moisture, which can leave your skin feeling soft and smooth. Follow up with a moisturizing lotion to leave skin silky and soft all day long. Make drive time your zen time. Instead of using your morning commute to run through your to-do list and mentally prepare for your work day, give yourself permission to let those duties wait until you reach your desk. Instead, take a mental boost by listening to some of your favorite music or enjoying an audiobook. Eat for energy. Food has one true purpose: fueling the body. At mealtime, put your wellbeing first and load up on foods that deliver nutrition your body needs. Look for proteins, a moderate amount of carbs and essentials like fiber that promote good digestion. Avoid feeling deprived by allowing yourself to enjoy occasional treats, but generally avoid unnecessary calories and sugary snacks. Wash away your worries. After a rough day, there are few things like a warm shower or bath to help wash it all away. Allow soothing aromas to envelop your senses as you lather your skin for a relaxing clean. Experience the essence of serenity with an option like Softsoap Pure Zen Relaxing Body Wash. Choose from tranquil scents of Rosewater and Lotus Flower or Jasmine and Watermint for a relaxing sensory experience. Explore more ways to take better care of your body inside and out at softsoap.com.

HEARING BETTER ON AND OFF THE STAGE BPT

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

. Decades around loud music caused guitarist David Gellis to develop hearing loss. In a recent video, he shared his journey to better hearing. When music damages your ears Music has always been a huge part of Dave Gellis' life. Both of his parents were musicians, and he started playing the piano when he was 5. He eventually switched to the guitar, and for most of his professional career, Dave has been the lead guitarist for the band Blood, Sweat and Tears. Years of playing loud shows, combined with the natural aging process, eventually took a toll on his hearing, and left him with mild-to-moderate hearing loss. As his hearing worsened over time, it became more difficult to hear the rest of the band, which affected how he played. Hearing loss also made it challenging for Dave to have conversations with others and even hear everyday sounds like birds singing. When Dave put on hearing aids for the first time, he described it as an epiphany and wished he hadn't waited so long. However, his older hearing aids' technology didn't meet all his needs as a musician, and he often had to decide whether to leave them on when performing. So, he sought a new hearing solution that could give him the clarity of music needed to perform, while helping him hear off the stage as well. His audiologist recommended Signia Pure(R) Charge&Go hearing aids. Hearing aid settings for every situation Dave's new hearing aids have transformed his life, helping him hear better in any situation. They enable him to hear music more clearly - an important feature for a musician. Whether playing live on stage or listening to music at home, he benefits from a clarity he didn't experience with his previous hearing aids. This enables him to pick up the nuances of the soundscape and cues from the rest of the band, improving his performance. Dave also enjoys a better listening experience in his everyday life. From listening to the sounds of nature while walking in a park to simply speaking with friends and family, he can hear everything clearly and naturally, including his own voice. Decades of performing may have damaged Dave's hearing, but with his new hearing aids, he can still enjoy his favorite passion. While he sometimes had to remove his old hearing aids when on stage, he now wears his Charge&Go devices all the time. Don't wait to address hearing loss Dave wishes he didn't wait as long as he did to treat his hearing loss, and often advises friends not to make the same mistake. He only hopes that others will see his video and realize that his advanced hearing aids can help them as well. To watch the video, visit https://www.signiausa.com/signia-hearing-aid-reviews/.

OPIOID CRISIS ILLUMINATES THE NEED TO SEE PAIN MEDICINE SPECIALISTS By: BPT

The opioid crisis has made physicians increasingly wary about prescribing the potentially addictive drugs to their patients in pain. But there is a silver lining - experts in pain medicine, such as physician anesthesiologists, can create individualized pain management plans that include alternatives to opioids that are not only safer, but often work better. "Opioids, or narcotics, can be helpful for shortterm relief, but they are not a long-term solution for managing pain because of their many downsides, from significant side effects to a high risk of dependence or addiction," said Greg L. Thompson, M.D., physician anesthesiologist, pain medicine specialist and member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). "Pain medicine specialists can help people in pain get relief and reduce or eliminate opioids often by using a combination of techniques from physical therapy and nerve blocks to nonaddictive pain medications." Opioids alleviated the excruciating pain 37-yearold mother of two Beth Hunt suffered while recovering from multiple surgeries after her leg was crushed in an accident. But after three months in the hospital on opioids, she came to rely on them just to be comfortable. Hunt turned to Dr. Thompson, who used ultrasound and tiny catheters, or tubes, to direct medication to the major nerves in her leg that were the source of the pain. This therapy reduced her opioid use by 90 percent while her leg healed and she learned to walk again. Now she is opioid-free, has regained her quality of life and is spending time being active with her children. cheakwoolfolk.com

Experts in effective, safer pain management help people get their lives back

Hunt never dreamed she'd become dependent on opioids, but her experience shows it can happen to anyone. ASA urges people to learn how the opioid crisis is changing the way physicians treat pain responsibly, and the reasons why your physician may limit or avoid prescribing opioids: They are not the only option: While opioids can provide general pain relief for a short while, they are not the solution for all pain because: * There are more effective methods for treating pain in a specific site, including nerve blocks or stimulation therapy. * People who take them can begin tolerating the dose, and may need higher doses to get the same relief. There are many side effects and risks: * Addiction and dependence are major worries. If there are signs of risk for addiction your physician may be more hesitant to prescribe opioids. * Other side effects include: sleepiness; constipation; depression; life-threatening shallow breathing; and slowed heart rate, which could be a sign of an overdose. * In older people, opioids can increase the risk of falling as well as interact with other medications, making them less effective or causing side effects. CKWMAG.ONLINE

It's the law: Legislators have enacted many rules and regulations in an attempt to stem the opioid crisis. For example, because studies show the longer people take opioids, the more likely they are to become addicted, some states have enacted prescribing limits on opioids. ASA supports patient-centered prescribing policies that consider individual patient needs, drawing on guidelines developed by medical specialty organizations. It's important to know there are many other options for managing pain, from targeted therapies (e.g., nerve blocks) to non-addictive medications (e.g., antidepressants, antiseizure medications, acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen) to high-tech methods (e.g., spinal stimulation and radiowave therapy) to alternative treatments (e.g., physical therapy, acupuncture and meditation). Learn more about non-opioid options for managing pain. The American Society of Anesthesiologists Founded in 1905, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) is an educational, research and scientific society with more than 52,000 members organized to raise and maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology. ASA is committed to ensuring that physician anesthesiologists evaluate and supervise the medical care of patients before, during and after surgery to provide the highest quality and safest care that every patient deserves. For more information on the field of anesthesiology, visit the American Society of Anesthesiologists online at asahq.org. MERCY OR JUSTICE

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

48

0HUF\ RU -XVWLFH Mercy - the act of compassion, forgiveness, favor, or kindness towards someone who has wronged or hurt someone. Justice - the act of being just, fair, equal, or righteous towards someone who has wronged someone. Now that we have defined mercy and justice, let’s dig a little deeper. When it comes to someone committing a crime, the law is the one who determines whether that person should be given mercy or justice. When it comes to an individual stand point, who determines whether someone should be given mercy or justice? Do we use our moral code and personal ethics to decide who or when justice or mercy should be given? I ask these questions not because I am confused or do not understand, I ask these questions to invoke deep and meaningful thoughts towards the conversation. I do believe that we all have our standards and hold a position when it comes to mercy or justice. Some of us may not sit on a jury of our peers and some of us may not hold the position as judge in the court of law. However; we always pick a side. We either do it consciously or unconsciously, but we do choose. Why do we have to choose? Our human nature, instinct, or impulse is why we usually chose. When we look at the things going on in our world today, we can clearly see that justice is not always righteous and mercy is not always an act of compassion but rather an act of force or a possible persuasion of one’s skin color. For instance; when we hear about another white cop who has beat, shot, or killed an unarmed black man or woman, a lot of us go straight to the justice play right? In that instance who should be given mercy and who should be given justice? Should the white cop be shown mercy just because he was “doing his job” and he says that he just happened to “fear for his life?” Should he automatically receive

justice by being convicted of cold-blooded murder and receive the highest conviction possible even to the point of getting the death penalty? Some would answer yes, and some will answer no but either way something should be done right? At any point did the victim have a chance to receive mercy or did he receive his justice with death? Let’s go a little deeper with this. When it comes to crime, statistics have shown that black criminals receive a harsher punishment than white criminals. In this case where does mercy or justice come into play? Crime is crime, right? Then why wouldn’t the same crime be treated with the same punishment? Does the color of one’s skin really affect the outcome? Unfortunately, and sadly this has been shown to be the case time and time again. The even sadder part is that the justice system refuses to answer for it but, yet they find justification to their actions. I can present several more cases, but I am sure by now you get the point. Insert whatever crime you want, there are plenty of them to choose from. I am not saying that black people should not receive justice for their crimes, but I am saying that justice should be fair regardless of skin color. I am not saying that white criminals should face harsher penalties, but I am saying that justice or mercy should not be based off skin color or one’s ethnicity alone. I am saying that mercy should be given at the discretion of the law, but at what point does the law’s mercy show discretion? I am saying that the words that are recited at the end of the pledge of allegiance, “AND LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL”, should really mean exactly that. In this world, where politics and religion play a big part in our society; while crooks, thieves, swindlers, racists, idiots, and bigots hold high offices and are left in charge; it doesn’t surprise nor shock me that mercy isn’t always mercy and justice really isn’t always justice. It doesn’t surprise me that injustice and inequality still exist and at what point will this cease to exist? I wish I could say that “I’m just asking for a friend”, but no, I am asking for all of AMERICA. Inquiring minds would like to know and for all those who have suffered at the hands of injustice and have never been shown mercy, when will they be able to stop the tears from falling and when will they be able

to feel safe again? When will they be able to rid themselves of the pain, hurt, and disappointment? At what point do we say enough is enough? Can it be said that “WE” are all to blame? Until we start holding injustice acts accountable and when we start working together as “ONE NATION” instead of being divisible by race, politics, and whatever else we come up with there will never be any true justice. Mercy will continue to be skewed and impartial. More bloodshed and more tears will follow. More anger will continue to fester. Mercy and justice will never be fully experienced for what it was intended for. We must do better or better, yet we must want more but until then we can continue the call or cry of “LORD HAVE MERCY!”

Throughout my journey in Paradise Island Tea, I have positioned myself to endure and overcome the many struggles that I am plagued with as a woman...an African American one at that. I constantly strive to beat the many odds that are set against me. I have experienced difficulties on jobs as well as with my own company due to the stereotypes that are used

to determine one's character, worth and ability to perform as a mere human being. Everyday guarantees a reminder as the world we truly live in. I do, however, feel if I strive to live in honesty, I can do my part to create my change in this world. I have been scripturally commanded to live as peaceably as possible with all men..yet standing for the truth and never forgetting who I am. I intend to do just that. WWW.PARADISEISLANDTEA.COM

Everyday, as we turn on the television, radio, or read the newspaper, we are reminded of the underlying struggles and hardships that lie underneath the systems of our Country, as well as other parts of the world for that matter. How many times have you heard yourself or someone else say “if only I had the energy I used to have”. It is no secret that aging causes your body to slow down in many ways. When we are young we don't think about the fact that we will not always be able to do the things we can do then. Aging is not an option, it is mandatory.

Ecclesiastes 12:1 says “Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, ‘I have no pleasure in them”. ESV

cheakwoolfolk.com

But the above verse likens our latter years to evil days without pleasure. And I am sure it is just that for many. Those in very poor health, locked away in nursing homes without love or visitors probably do feel that way. Aging is not easy to accept for many. And many work hard all their lives only to retire and fall into bad health. They can not celebrate the fruits of their labor. Situations like this do not seem fair but is life fair? Aging is not about fairness or justice. But it does appear to be both when some of us finally reach a time in our lives when our maturity and understanding reach a time of its greatest potential only to be affected adversely by the aging process. Then there are the ones who worked hard, prepared for life after work, and everything fell into place as it was supposed to. They travel, enjoy their hobbies, and are in fairly good health. And of course, there are other situations than those I described. But the fact is that no matter the situation, aging happens to us all. We may not be ready for it, but it is coming. CKWMAG.ONLINE

Looking at society today, it is sometimes difficult to know who is a senior and who is not a senior. Lately when you visit any grocery stores, restaurants, medical offices, or retail outlets it is almost impossible to do so without seeing a senior citizen or two working in one of those establishments. No matter the reason for working, some say it is good to be active for both the body and the mind. The number of seniors in the workforce has almost tripled since the 1970s. Workers aged 65 and above nearly doubled between 1977 and 2007. Those working full time has now surpassed part timers. Researchers predict a 23% increase in the senior workforce by year 2022. Now that you know you have less years ahead of you than behind you, what do you do? First signs of aging are usually graying or thin hair or both. The weight begins to like the waistline a little too much. And there are more aches and pains than there used to be. But don’t just brush off everything as aging. There is a difference between aging and illness. What Is Normal? What Our Eyes See First, aging is in no way a failure of our bodies. Aging is a slow and mostly hidden process. Our bodies begin to age the day we are born. The average peak functioning age is near 30. That is probably where the saying came from that it is all downhill after 30.

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

62

Other changes you might notice are in your strength, your stamina, or your sensory perception. These things vary depending on your health issues, genetics, and personal health history. Around the age of 40 even those with perfect eyesight find they need reading glasses. For me it was bifocals and I was less than happy about it. Nearing the age of 60 you may begin to experience problems with cataracts. If you notice a change in central vision, it may not be aging but a need for a thorough examination. What Our Ears Hear At the age of 60 or older about one third of people suffer some degree of hearing loss. This is usually due to the loss of sensory receptors in the inner ear. This condition is known as presbycusis. Robert Dobie, MD, professor of otolaryngology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio cautions that pain, drainage, or rapid hearing loss is not a sign of aging but a need for an examination. If you recognize that your hearing is not as good as it was a few years, that is aging. If you recognize that your hearing has changed since last week, that is not the aging process. What Our Bodies Feel The muscles in our bodies lose tissue as we age. They also become less toned and more rigid. This condition can be improved with weight training and stretching exercises. This affect on our bodies can be improved but not erased. Our organs change causing a change in stamina. The walls of the heart thicken, our arteries stiffen, and our heart rate slows. Maintaining regular aerobic exercise can also improve stamina.

cheakwoolfolk.com

Don’t mistake serious signs like chest pain with dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea, or fainting as signs of aging. They are signs of a possible heart attack. Aging may also cause our bodies to be vulnerable to certain medical conditions. More than half of people over 60 have high blood pressure. Maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and following a low sodium diet may help to improve high blood pressure. The difficulty of remembering things like, where you put your keys or the phone number or name of a friend you haven’t seen in awhile is normal aging. But if memory loss begins to interfere with daily life it is likely more than aging. What Can You Do • Eat a healthy diet • Don’t smoke • Include regular physical activity daily • Manage your stress • Get enough sleep • Get adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D to promote bone, joint, and muscle health • Drink plenty of water • Maintain a healthy weight • Stay mentally active • Maintain a social life with family and friends

African-Americans comprise only 13% of the U.S. population and 14% of the monthly drug users, but are 37% of the people arrested for drug-related offenses in America. Studies show that police are more likely to pull over and frisk blacks or Latinos than whites. In New York City, 80% of the stops made were blacks and Latinos, and 85% of those people were frisked, compared to a mere 8% of white people stopped. INJUSTICE

Injustice? Injustice is a broad stroke of a word and can invoke many feelings and thoughts. For me injustice immediately makes me think of fighting for the underdog. I know that our global community encompasses so many cultures and mindsets that injustice seems to always be present. When I witness wrongdoing I often want to jump right in and help! I become upset, outraged and downright indignant over the issue. However, the real question I have been struggling with is what about the injustices that have become the norm? The injustice that we witness and yet turn a cold shoulder to? We act as if they are no big deal or that the recipient is deserving? I started thinking about how guilty we are when we simplify wrongs just because they occur constantly? just because the light shined on them attempts to make the injustice seem ethically right. How often have you witness the mistreatment of the opposite sex, yet victim blamed? Or, been the witness of racial mistreatment yet you’ve justified it?b

The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics concluded that an African American male born in 2001 has a 32% chance of going to jail in his lifetime, while a Latino male has a 17% chance, and a white male only has a 6% chance.

bAt some point we all have a responsibly or even a minute role in shifting the narrative. My question? How courageous are you? Will you do you speak up? Social media and media outlets have desensitized us to horrible wrongs and made them so common that our views are truly skewed. I declare that we each are a part of the problem!

The definition of Injustice is: Injustice is a quality relating to unfairness or undeserved outcomes. The term may be applied in reference to a particular event or situation, or to a larger status quo. In Western philosophy and jurisprudence, injustice is very commonly—but not always—defined as either the absence or the opposite of justice.

I want to ask you what is your personal definition of injustice? What provokes you to speak up? I challenge each of you to make a conscious effort to not just speak against the obvious and popular topics of injustice but also to rage against the machine and thunderously speak against the subtle injustice, the unpopular topics and non-trending wrongs that go unchallenged daily across the globe. As humans and global citizens, we must realize we are a part of the bigger picture. Each action or nonaction is a brushstroke on the canvas of life. What image are you creating? Ask yourself if your legacy will include righting wrongs or sitting silently while injustice occurs? How powerful is your voice? If used as a tool to make change it is like the voice of the gods. Able to breathe life into corrective action and suck the power from the negatives. It can swiftly bring eyes to the matter and give voice to the muted members of our society. cheakwoolfolk.com

Bill Cosby was recently convicted to 3 to 10 years in prison for allegedly groping a woman 14 years ago. There was no physical evidence and she was paid over $3 million dollars for any perceived inconvenience. There was an agreement to keep depositions sealed and not to prosecute. This trial will likely be a death sentence for an 81-year-old man. Aside from my personal beliefs that he was accused by many other women and is very possibly guilty of some misconduct. People are not supposed to go to prison based on what we THINK they did. They are supposed to be convicted on PROOF. There was never any solid proof of any crimes committed and many accusers were found to be inconsistent in the recollection of facts from many years ago. Has Bill Cosby been found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt? Is this justice or injustice? The law is supposed to work based on facts, not rumors, not whispers and certainly not having a judge unseal testimony that condemns a person based on their biases. For many they will say he was guilty so it all came out in the wash. However, the law needs to be consistently fair or there is no law at all. CKWMAG.ONLINE

However, you view it is your choice, but it’s clear to see that there are often two systems at work when we can’t seem to get a conviction when minorities and people of color are shot or beaten right on camera by police officers who are sworn to uphold the law. Also, I’m sure that many are aware of the Dallas police officer who shot an unarmed man in his own apartment and claimed she thought it was hers. She was handled with kid gloves and never spent one night in jail. Witnesses are now stepping up to contest her version of events and she may end up being tried for murder, but we will have to see how it plays out. Lastly, she was just recently fired, yet the two cases were handled totally different and the public outcry played a huge part in the actions of the law. So, I ask you again, how courageous are you would you speak up? Because without you playing your part injustices will ultimately prevail and our society will ultimately fail. Let us know what you think. Be the change you’d like to see in the world.

Egypt ranks low in gender equity compared to other countries worldwide. The 2015 Global Gender Gap Index, which measures disparities between men and women across countries, ranks Egypt at 136 out of 145 countries worldwide. Women have significantly lower participation in the labor force than men (26% vs 79%) and lower literacy (65% literacy for women vs 82% of males). The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s Social Institutions and Gender Index 2014, which measures legislation, practices, and attitudes that restrict women’s rights and opportunities, classifies Egypt to be among the countries ‘very high’ in gender discrimination together with others in Africa and the Middle East. And as revealed by the 2014 Demographic and Health Survey, 92% of the ever-married women ages 15-49 interviewed have been circumcised. /www.usaid.gov/egypt/gender-equality-and-womens-empowerment

Russia In December 2015, a court sentenced a blogger from the Siberian city of Tomsk to five years in prison for “extremism” after he posted videos on YouTube and social media criticizing Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine, making discriminatory remarks about people arriving in Russia from eastern Ukraine, and alleging corruption by local officials. One year later, in December 2016 another blogger from Tyumen, Siberia, received a two-and-a-half year prison sentence for the extremist crime of “public justification of terrorism,” after writing a blog post criticizing Russia’s military involvement in Syria. While the first blogger’s sentence was severely disproportionate, the second was convicted of a crime and jailed simply for expressing his opinion.

What do you get when you put four amazing people on stage and give them a microphone and the skills to make people laugh without boundaries? You get Eric Kimbrough Presents “One Night Only” a sold out show at The Caravan located in Louisville Kentucky.

1250 Bardstown Rd Louisville, KY 40204 (502) 459-0022

On one spectacular night the energy was electric and three great comedians delivered their own special observations on many different topics that had the crowd in stitches. The night was prefaced by the rule of every comedy show, which is to laugh in abundance, enjoy yourself, and to not take anything personal. The comics were Demetrius (Meech Dog) Wheeler of Louisville, Cazsell Williams from Memphis, and Lady Shamar of North Carolina. Kimbrough did a great job, but this is no surprise, as he has had plenty of experience being on stage and bringing big names while touring the country and making people laugh from one end of it to the other. As a comedy veteran and comedian Kimbrough has learned what the crowd likes and he has the skill to move his show and bring out a crowd. Kimbrough has a cult like movement in comedy. “I don’t sell shows I sell vibes!! If the vibe is good the show is good.” I can assure you that when he brings this show back to Louisville you will want to make sure to get your tickets early because many people were turned away and missed and incredible evening of great laughs and great times.

3 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT CHOCOLATE AND WHY YOU SHOULD CARE PRESENTED BY BPT

As you stand in the chocolate aisle of the grocery store, have you ever stopped to think about the story behind each bar? Knowing that your choice of chocolate has a positive impact on the farmers who cultivated the cocoa beans can sweeten the entire experience. When choosing your favorite treat, make sure it is one that combines pleasure with purpose. Here are three things you might not know about chocolate, and how each one could impact your decision in the candy aisle: 1. The cocoa industry affects over 5 million small holder cocoa farmers around the world. The majority of cocoa is grown on small farms operated by independent farmers in developing countries in West Africa, Southeast Asia and the Americas. Your choice in the chocolate aisle can go a long way toward supporting these households: DOVE Chocolate partners with CARE, an organization dedicated to fighting global poverty. This partnership powers the development of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs): savings-led, communitybased programs that allow members, such as cocoa farmers and their families, to support each other with low-interest loans and savings plans. The loans help cocoa farming households access capital to improve their farming practices, expand and diversify their businesses, and invest in education and health for their families and enrich their local community.

2. Fifty percent of cocoa farming activities are completed by women, yet women rarely benefit from cocoa-related income. While women play a key role in cocoa farming, many of them do not receive the income benefits they deserve. The VSLA initiative provides women with ways to save money and access small loans. In turn, women in cocoa farming communities can increase productivity on their cocoa farms and even achieve greater equality with their male counterparts. Within the past year, female representation in VSLAs has risen to 80 percent, and many members have increased their initial investments by 58 percent since joining a VSLA. 3. Cocoa is produced by farming households in developing African countries who often lack affordable financial services, according to CARE. Rural Africans have been forced to use whatever high-cost lenders are available in their area. By choosing chocolate that supports VSLA programs, you're helping women in cocoa growing communities find a safe and community-supported way to access loans and put their money into savings. What's more, these programs have further evolved with the linkage of many VSLAs and their members to formal Micro-Finance Institutions (MFI). This linkage gives VSLA members opportunities to access more modern financial tools that can increase profitability. "Today's consumers are savvy in that they are increasingly conscientious about their impact on the world based on their purchase decisions," says Leslie Philipsen, Brand Director, DOVE Chocolate. "For example, we are finding that people appreciate knowing that their favorite brands stand behind real commitments to the people who create the products they know and love, and are doing what they can to help them succeed. That's why we continue to partner with CARE to positively impact thousands of women in the cocoa growing communities of Cote d'Ivoire through the VSLA program." cheakwoolfolk.com

CKWMAG.ONLINE

"We know when a woman joins a VSLA, her involvement creates ripples of positive change that extend past herself to include the people in her community," says Marcela Hahn, Executive Director of CARE's Strategic Partnerships team. "VSLAs are about more than giving women financial opportunities. They are about transformation. We are honored to stand in partnership with DOVE Chocolate, changing the lives of thousands of women and their families in Cote d'Ivoire." From now through August 18, DOVE Chocolate will donate $1 to CARE for every purchase of specially marked DOVE Chocolate PROMISES at CVS Pharmacy locations. We all love sitting down together for a hot meal. Unfortunately, preparing the meal itself turns into a chore that usually falls to one family member (Mom).

Switch up your dinner prep routine and turn it into a fun family activity that involves the kids. Yes, it may take extra time and effort, and, yes, there will be spills. But in the long run, you'll see the benefits. They'll gain valuable life skills since cooking builds confidence and, eventually, you'll be able to turn to them to get dinner started before you arrive home. Until then, think of this as a great way to spend time together. With these three tips (plus a delicious meal to start with), you'll be on your way.

This balanced meal of chicken and veggie skewers (see recipe below) paired with Stouffer's Macaroni & Cheese is a simple and wholesome way to get dinner on the table in little time. The skewers are a delicious way to get their fill of protein and veggies. And Stouffer's is an easy solution you can feel good about feeding your family, with ingredients you would use in your own homemade version, like freshly made pasta, butter, cheddar and milk - no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. Don't leave out the littles The youngest member of your family may not be tall enough to reach the stovetop, but that doesn't mean they can't help! There are plenty of things their cute little hands can do to help in the kitchen. They can wash produce, squeeze lemons, stem herbs, or tear lettuce leaves for salad. They can even halve mushrooms with a butter knife, stir the batter and push the start button. When they're enthusiastic to help alongside their siblings, find a way to let them join in on the fun. Prep produce ahead of time

Keep it quick and simple Complex recipes might tax the attention span of your small sous chef. Keep it low-key and stress-free with recipes that take 10 minutes or less to prepare. Along with that, don't shy away from meal solutions that will get their favorite foods on the table in a snap. cheakwoolfolk.com

A balanced plate should be half veggies and/or fruit because produce is packed with fiber and nutrients that support good health. Trouble is, washing, peeling and slicing can add many minutes to weeknight meal prep and delay your dinner especially if you have a crew of small helpers by your side. CKWMAG.ONLINE

5 reasons to snack on strawberries

BPT

114

The perfect snack needs to check off three boxes: It should be filling enough to get you to your next meal, provide nutrition that fits into your balanced diet, and satisfy cravings, whether sweet or savory. Not an easy task, but juicy California strawberries are up for the challenge. "Strawberries are an ideal snack because not only do they taste great, they're also heart-healthy and an anti-inflammatory food," says Manuel Villacorta, registered dietitian and author of Flat Belly 365. "I love to pair strawberries with yogurt, peanut butter on rice crackers, or cottage cheese. Strawberry smoothies are also a favorite." Naturally sweet, yet low in sugar Many people get the urge to graze around that 3 o'clock slump. By reaching for something that has natural sweetness, you can fulfill that craving without excess calories and sugar. In fact, one serving of eight strawberries has only 50 calories and eight grams of sugar. Bursting with nutrients Another reason to love strawberries? "The combination of flavonoids, antioxidants and fiber can help reduce cholesterol levels," Villacorta says. "Plus, strawberries are full of potassium, which can help manage blood pressure and prevent strokes." Strawberries don't stop there; a single serving has more vitamin C than an orange. Boost your brain According to a study in the Annals of Neurology, eating strawberries at least twice per week may delay cognitive aging by two and a half years, which includes improvement in memory and motor function. Add in a daily sudoku or crossword puzzle and you're on your way to a sharper mind! cheakwoolfolk.com

Great for diabetes management Nutrient-packed strawberries are a great option for those with diabetes. In fact, the American Diabetes Association lists strawberries as a top superfood for diabetic meal plans. "The anthocyanins found in strawberries may help improve insulin resistance, which means you can regulate blood glucose better," according to Villacorta. Snacks anyone will love Both kids and adults love a good strawberry snack. Try a strawberry oat bar, peanut butter yogurt dipped strawberries, strawberry almond butter snackwich or even strawberry turkey pinwheels to switch things up in your afternoon routine. From quick and kidfriendly to fancy appetizers, visit CaliforniaStrawberries.com for snacks perfect for all ages and occasions. Snacking can be fun for the whole family with bright colors, simple recipe ideas, unexpected flavor combinations and a little creativity. And if your snacks are full of vital nutrients and health benefits, even better! What are you waiting for? Pick up some strawberries and get snacking today.

3 reasons fall is a great time for roofingb BPT 120

Cool breezes and falling leaves are around the corner, and for many parts of the country those telltale signs of fall signal the best possible season for roofing. So what makes fall a great time for roof repairs or a full replacement? 1. Perfect weather The same perfectly cool weather that makes fall a favorite time of year for camping and outdoor activities also makes it a great time for roofing - and not just because it's more comfortable for the roofer. Asphalt shingles, the most popular form of roofing in the U.S., have an optimum temperature for installation. Keep in mind, the perfect roofing weather of fall can mean busy contractors. 2. Spring and summer storms The warmth and humidity of the spring and summer months are notorious for spawning severe thunderstorms. Hail can fall any time of the year, but is most common in the spring and summer months, reaching a peak in June in several regions. High winds from spring storms can also uproot trees and snap limbs, both of which can fall on the roof. "We always recommend homeowners hire a professional to examine their roofs, both for their safety, and to protect their roof," said Stephen McNally, vice president of sales and marketing for TAMKO Building Products, a major manufacturer of asphalt shingles. cheakwoolfolk.com

CKWMAG.ONLINE

3. Winter is coming Depending on the area of the country, winter can bring subzero temperatures and up to 10 feet of snow. Freeze-thaw cycles, ice dams and damp weather require the roof to be in top shape to defend against these threats during the winter months. Winter can be a difficult time to roof, so leaks that show up during the winter months can take longer to fix. "Weather is always a concern as a contractor, I would never tear more off a roof than what could be re-shingled in one day," said Rick Taylor, a longtime roofing contractor, now working as an industry sales trainer known as Rick the Roofer. "And if there was more than a 50 percent chance of rain that day, I waited to start the project." With the optimal temperatures and weather - and the need to prepare for winter homeowners will find fall to be a great time for roofing. With a skilled labor shortage already pushing project start dates out weeks or months, homeowners should act quickly to schedule their roof project if they want it completed before winter.

6 tips for throwing the best party of the year BPT

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

124

Set the mood with music

There's always one magical gathering every year that has everyone talking long after it's over. It's about getting people together, enjoying good food, music, and cocktails, and creating memories that will linger long after the last guest goes home. With a little planning and preparation, you can be the one to throw the best party of the year. You can use your backyard long into the fall and early winter season if you take a page from tailgating's book. Tailgaters know it's not as easy as simply moving an indoor dinner party outside. Outdoor parties require some special TLC, especially if the weather is a little on the chilly side. Here are some tips for delighting your guests: Keep the menu simple, but outstanding Do casual, easy food, with a few surprises. We're not talking about fussy chateaubriand here. For a group of, say, 20 people, fire up the grill, appoint a grillmaster or two, and do steaks, fish, chicken, kebabs or ribs. For sides, go with a big plate of veggies like peppers, onions, zucchini, asparagus and tomatoes marinated in balsamic vinegar and grilled to perfection, topped with crumbled goat cheese. A big bowl of fruit and you're good to go. For larger crowds, you can do heavy hors d'oeuvres or go all out and cater it in. A full Southern barbecue with all the trimmings. Book that hot new Jamaican food truck everyone's buzzing about. For chillier weather, nothing beats a big pot of chili, ancheakwoolfolk.com Italian feast or a taco bar.

Forget lugging your indoor sound system outside. Use a Bluetooth speaker with stellar sound like the LG PK7 Portable Bluetooth Speaker with Meridian Audio from LG Electronics USA. This highly portable speaker packs a big punch with 24-bit music quality over a Bluetooth wireless connection. You can even make calls on it, too. Bonus: It is splash proof and touts a 22-hour battery life on a full charge, so there's no need to worry about using it by the pool or plugging in throughout the day. Just fire up your favorite music apps and start your playlist, because with sound like this, your guests will be wondering if Keith Urban is serenading them live. Let the weather be your guide If it's a balmy night you've got no worries, but if the temperature is going to dip a bit, make sure you have outdoor heaters and a fire pit or chimenea to keep your guests warm and toasty. There's nothing cozier on a dark, chilly night than standing in front of a fire with something warm to drink (hot brandy, anyone?). Make sure to have a 'plan b' if Mother Nature gets really upset you didn't invite her. A little nip in the air is one thing, sleet is another. Watch the weather in the hours before your guests arrive and be ready to mobilize. This could be a party tent, an empty garage where you can move the tables and still watch the rain, or a different venue you have on speed dial. Have a signature cocktail It could be a spritzer with lemon and berries, hot cider with a splash of rum, or something a mixologist creates just for you. Complement that with drink stands in various spots in the yard, with wine, beer and other adult and non-alcoholic beverages. But ban the dreary coolers. Get creative! Fill a wheelbarrow with ice and load it with beer and other bottles. Go on a hunt in your garage or basement for inventive vessels to use. Another tip: stock up on more ice than you think you'll need. That, you can store in a cooler in the garage. CKWMAG.ONLINE

Create atmosphere with lights Turn your yard into a midsummer (or fall) night's dream. Candles everywhere. Hint: Use the ones with battery-powered "flames." They won't be affected by wind, and there's no chance they'll fall over and catch fire. Hang paper lanterns from tree branches and drape holiday lights on fences. Float water lights in the pool for the ultimate party setting. You'll create a magical wonderland your guests will want to lose themselves in. Create seating stations Whether you're serving a sit-down dinner, having a buffet or simply cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, your guests are going to need places to sit. Depending on how many people you invite, you can rent tables and chairs from a party rental company, use your outdoor furniture or bring the inside out. The idea is to create spaces for people to sit and talk. On chillier nights, make sure heating elements are nearby and strew lap blankets here and there. Attend to the little details Bugs: Make sure you have enough citronella candles to ward off mosquitoes. You may also want to set up a basket containing various kinds of bug spray for your guests. Plates and flatware: You don't want to use your indoor dishes, but paper plates? Please. Not only are they hum-drum, they clog up landfills. Instead, try eco-friendly, disposable partyware. You can find biodegradable paper plates and cutlery, but why not make a statement with disposable plates made of palm or bamboo? They are recyclable, compostable and gorgeous. Use these tips to throw the magical party everyone will be talking about all year long.

7 SURPRISING BENEFITS OF DOING JIGSAW PUZZLES BPT

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

128

There's a quiet movement going on in this country, and it doesn't involve apps, data or the latest fad. Following the lead of vinyl record albums, coloring books and traditional board games, jigsaw puzzles are seeing a resurgence in popularity. Perhaps, because it's an opportunity to unplug and give yourself and family an escape from the information overload that is buzzing through the very fabric of our lives 24/7. Wrestling the kids (or yourself) away from screens, devices, even the television can be a nearly impossible task, but it's vital to our mental and even physical health. A jigsaw puzzle requires your full attention and therein lies the magic. Everyone from tweens and teens to millennials and overworked parents to seniors are returning to this quiet pastime of childhood. Call it a retro revolution. Ravensburger, a company that has been making high-quality, premium jigsaw puzzles for 134 years, recently partnered with Target to offer a new line of 500- and 1,000-piece puzzles because anyone and everyone can benefit from puzzling. (HINT: Start with the 500-piece puzzle. They're designed to strike the perfect balance of challenge and solvability.) Here are some benefits of puzzling that might surprise you. Jigsaw puzzles exercise the left and right sides of your brain at once Your left brain is logical and works in a linear fashion, while your right brain is creative and intuitive. When you're doing a jigsaw puzzle, both sides are engaged, according to Sanesco Health, an industry leader in neurotransmitter testing. Think of it as a mental workout that improves your problem-solving skills and attention span. It's no surprise that Bill Gates admits to being an avid puzzler. Jigsaw puzzles improve your short-term memory Can't remember what you had for lunch yesterday? Jigsaw puzzles can help with that. Doing a puzzle reinforces connections between brain cells, improves mental speed and is an especially effective way to improve shortterm memory. cheakwoolfolk.com

CKWMAG.ONLINE

Jigsaw puzzles improve your visual-spatial reasoning When you do a jigsaw puzzle, you need to look at individual pieces and figure out where they'll fit into the big picture. If you do it regularly, you'll improve visual-spatial reasoning, which helps with driving a car, packing, using a map, learning and following dance moves, and a whole host of other things. Jigsaw puzzles are a great meditation tool and stress reliever Focusing on one image for a long period of time, without extraneous thoughts entering your mind, is in itself meditation. By doing a jigsaw puzzle, you're getting the same benefits as if you meditated. The stress of everyday life evaporates and is replaced by a sense of peace and tranquility that lowers your blood pressure and heart rate. Jigsaw puzzles are a great way to connect with family Starting a jigsaw puzzle and keeping it on a table in your living room or kitchen is an invitation for the whole family to participate, whenever they have a few minutes to sit down and focus. It's a tactic that parents of teens can use for starting a conversation while working toward a shared goal. Conversely, jigsaw puzzles are great for some needed alone time Puzzling is perfect for people who want a quiet, solo break from the bustle and unrelenting stimulus of today's digital lifestyle. You'll live longer, better if you puzzle regularly Studies show that people who do jigsaw and crossword puzzles have longer life spans with less chances of developing Alzheimer's disease, memory loss or dementia. Puzzling stimulates the brain and actually wards off the plaque that is the marker of Alzheimer's, according to a recent study published in the Archives of Neurology. The study compared brain scans of 75-year-olds to 25-year-olds. The elderly people who did puzzles regularly had brain scans comparable to the 25-year-olds. Doing jigsaw puzzles is good for your mind, body and spirit. So, on your next lazy Sunday (or better yet - crazed Monday), unplug, put your phone on "Do Not Disturb," and get swept away by a puzzle.

Evoke the 24-hour rule Have you ever booked a flight and then found a better deal the following day? Some airlines allow you to cancel flights within 24 hours of booking with no penalty. But a word to the wise: If you're booking through a third-party travel site, that rule might not apply. Get a credit card with a hotel rewards program Chase and IHG found that 71 percent of travelers surveyed use credit card points as often as they can to book travel arrangements. The points add up faster than you can say "free vacation." But not all cards are created equal. The IHG速 Rewards Club Premier Card from Chase sets a new standard for credit card benefits. You can earn 10 points per $1 spent on purchases at IHG hotels, like Holiday Inn Express速, 2 points per $1 spent on purchases at gas stations, grocery stores and restaurants, plus additional travel benefits like an anniversary free night stay, automatic Platinum Elite IHG速 Rewards Club member status, no foreign transaction fee, Global Entry and TSA Precheck credit, and receive a fourth reward night free when you redeem points for any stay of 4 or more nights. A hotel credit card like the IHG速 Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is an easy way to earn more points on everyday purchases to get you even more savings and on to your next vacation faster. And for a limited time for new cardmembers, you'll earn 100,000 bonus IHG points when you spend $3,000 in the first 3 months on your Premier card!

Scan your important documents

Once your trip is booked, remember to scan your passport, driver's license, birth certificate, even credit cards front and back. Email the scans to yourself or leave a copy at home with someone you trust. That way, if these lifelines are lost or stolen, you'll have a much easier time getting them replaced. Roll it up! If you're not rolling your clothes, you're wasting precious suitcase space. Rolling instead of folding can double the amount of clothes you can take with you. Also, pop a dryer sheet into your suitcase to freshen everything up. Pop your power cords into an extra glasses case A glasses case will wrangle those cords into submission, and you won't risk getting them kinked or tangled. Bonus tip: If you forget your cords, ask your hotel's front desk. They often have spare cords for forgetful travelers to use during their stay. Another tip: If you have somehow forgotten your plug, you can use the USB port on the hotel TV to charge your phone.

* * Not opting for real wood. While the grain of authentic wood is hands-down more visually stunning than composite, many homeowners don't realize wood can also be more affordable and just as easy to maintain. The NAR study also found wooden decks recoup greater resale value than composite decks. A particularly versatile choice for decks is Western Red Cedar, a species that inherently resists rot, decay, shrinkage and insects. And if left unfinished, it weathers over time into an attractive silvery gray patina. Do-it-yourselfers report it's naturally flat and able to absorb a wide range of finishes. * Not factoring in maintenance and upkeep. Regardless of materials, decks typically need periodic cleaning to protect them from the elements and keep them looking like new. A cedar deck should be cleaned annually with a plain bristle brush. If you choose to stain your deck, be sure to select a quality product. For more information about creating your dream deck, visit RealCedar.com.

Ä… Moving to a new home can be an exciting undertaking, a fresh start that brings with it the potential for new friends, opportunities and experiences. For parents of young children, though, the process of adapting to a new home can be stressful. While you may have been proactive about averting safety hazards in your old house, a move to a new one calls for renewed awareness of anything that could potentially harm your kids. Unfortunately, the National Safety Council advises that more than a third of child injuries and deaths happen at home, with household injuries the No. 1 reason children younger than 3 visit emergency rooms. Fortunately, conscientious parents can do much to avoid such injuries. Consider these tips for keeping your children safe through the moving process and beyond. Be proactive about precautions. Don't wait until all your belongings are moved in and you're adding the finishing touches. Instead, evaluate potential safety hazards before the move even begins, buying important tools and fixtures so you can make adjustments early rather than retrofitting. Then, once everything is in place, reevaluate results one more time. "The first step to a safe home ... is to look at the world through your baby's eyes," writes Laura McHolm in the Huffington Post. "See what looks interesting and what can be reached. And I mean it literally - get down on your hands and knees in your new home and check for small things your baby can choke on."Switch all your blinds to the cordless variety. Kids and cords don't mix, and the string-like attachments that adjust old-style blinds and other window coverings are strangulation hazards. If the windows of your new home have corded window coverings, replace them immediately with the cordless varieties available at major U.S. retailers. Look for the Best for Kids(TM) label that certifies window coverings that are best suited for young children, finding more info at Windowcoverings.org.Separate and secure household chemicals. The moving process can be chaotic, and it's all too easy to lose track of where movers are placing potentially harmful substances such as cleaning products, medicines, vitamins, alcohol, pet food, paint, gasoline and poisonous plants. That's why you should deliberately pack anything that could hurt your kids into marked boxes that travel with you in your car, separate from the belongings handled by your movers. Upon arrival, keep those boxes apart and sealed until you're ready to unpack them into locked cabinets.Secure furniture and TVs against tip-overs. As your furniture and heavy electronics are arranged, install safety latches to ensure they can't inadvertently fall onto young children. Installation will be faster and easier if you label the latches ahead of time.Update locks inside and out. When shopping for locks and deadbolts for your new home, seek the BHMA Certified Secure Home(TM) label that ensures your new products have been tested in all the areas of most importance to you and your family: security, durability and finish.Install baby gates at staircases. Don't wait; do this as soon as you arrive on moving day. Children will be curious about their new surroundings, but at the same time unfamiliar with potential hazards.A move to your new home should be a happy time. Make sure you're keeping it that way by fully protecting your children as you make the transition. cheakwoolfolk.com CKWMAG.ONLINE

Knowledge is power: Tips to help children better understand our connected world %< %37

Technology has rapidly changed the way we live over the past 30 years. Where people once turned strictly to their televisions to watch their favorite shows or play video games, people can now access their favorite entertainment, anytime and anywhere thanks to smart devices and a WiFi connection. This new level of connectivity goes well beyond easier access to entertainment. For example, can you log onto a computer and get a real-time look at your energy use through your utility? If so, your home has a smart-meter - a powerful tool to help you better understand this newly connected world. Smart meters are part of an emerging set of smart grid technologies that are transforming how electricity use is viewed and managed. Previously, an analog meter on your home measured your electricity use and, at the end of the month, a bill came in the mail. Now, smart meters communicate with the utility in real time. For you, this means easy, more immediate access to your energy-usage information, as well as the ability to take part in energy saving programs. "Children today have the benefit of knowing that connectivity is just there whenever they want it," said Etienne Veber, president of Field Trip Factory, a firm that helps design, schedule and promote interactive learning experiences. "We can help our youth understand how this newly connected environment works for them, so that they learn to use it responsibly and have the foundational knowledge to one day lead and innovate future technology breakthroughs." Parents can lay the foundation in their own homes, and smart meters and their connection to the smart grid make an excellent launching point for some fun science and technology lessons. Make the connection: For decades, parents reminded children to turn off the lights and shut the front door to save energy. Children possibly ignored those reminders, perhaps because it was too difficult to prove these things made a difference. With a smart meter and a smart thermostat installed in your home, you have an unprecedented opportunity to show the cause and effect almost instantly. With a simple login, children can now see how much energy your house uses and discover what happens when the lights are turned off and the door is closed.

Take a spin with renewable energy: One neat benefit of the smart grid is how it makes it easier for utilities to use those renewable energy options, like solar and wind, and help them become increasingly available to customers. Help children understand how sun and wind can make renewable energy with backyard experiments that are safe, easy and practically free. For example, a cardboard box, aluminum foil and sunny day are all you need to create a solar oven that cooks a pizza right in your backyard. Get a behind-the-scenes peek: Talk to your child's teacher or scout leader and volunteer to help organize a field trip to your local utility or have a utility representative speak in your child's classroom. Some utilities have developed engaging teaching tools that help children understand where their electricity comes from. One prime example is ComEd's Smart Energy Hub Program in Northern Illinois. Thanks to a partnership with Field Trip Factory, the electricity provider has designed and developed an engaging, interactive program for students - one that cannot be duplicated in the classroom - that explains how the new smart grid system works, and how it helps everyone save energy almost effortlessly. So far, the Smart Energy Hub program has reached 6,000 families and students. Many of the youth return from the Smart Energy Hub feeling inspired and motivated to reduce energy use at home. Be sure and use that momentum and come up with a plan the whole family can use to save energy and keep more money on hand for the fun stuff! To learn more about ComEd's Smart Energy Hub Program, and other engaging programs that might be in your area, explore FieldTripFactory.com. cheakwoolfolk.com

Poll u t i o n p rot e ct i o n : 5 e a sy tips for combating the environment's effects on skinÍ? CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

BPT Properly taking care of your skin each day - and countering the possible effects of pollution - is quick, affordable and easy to do. So why do so many Americans forgo that step in their daily routines? A recent survey by CeraVe found 48 percent of American adults often worry about their skin, yet 36 percent have no regular skincare routine. Only 36 percent regularly use cleanser, and 33 percent say they're confused about how to choose effective products and methods. Unfortunately, everyday pollution and UV rays can easily wreak havoc on your skin, so it's essential to develop a proper skincare routine to combat these effects. In a given year, Americans are subject to some 83 million tons of pollution particles emitted into the air. Many Americans encounter those particles on their daily commutes, and because they can be 20 times smaller than your pores, they can infiltrate deep levels of your epidermis, leading to inflammation, dehydration and/or loss of elasticity. cheakwoolfolk.com

Without a regular skincare routine, you're also more apt to deal with dryness, irritation, acne, accelerated aging, hyperpigmentation, dullness and other unwanted attributes that can result from the air quality. That may be why six in 10 U.S. adults say they cope with as many as 10 "bad skin days" monthly. "Forming good skincare habits is not complicated, and it can pay off significantly in terms of your health and appearance," notes board-certified dermatologist Dr. Michelle Henry. "It's never too late to begin a daily skincare routine that offers the best possible protection against unhealthy elements in our environment." Consider adopting these five habits that will keep your skin glowing and protected from all that it encounters. 1) Use an effective sunscreen every day. Apply a product that has an SPF of 30 or higher, is water resistant and provides broad-spectrum coverage so it protects you from both UVA and UVB rays. Reapply it throughout the day as needed. Henry points to studies indicating pollution may worsen the effects of UV and increase the risk of skin cancer. 2) Wash twice daily with a quality cleanser. Choosing the right product is key. Henry recommends CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser or Foaming Facial Cleanser, which are gentle on skin and deeply cleanse to remove dirt, oil and residue that build up throughout the day, helping to counteract the harmful effects of pollution and leaving skin hydrated.

3) Send linens through the laundry. Ideally, towels and washcloths should be washed in hot water after one use, and pillowcases should be washed or changed multiple times per week. While this may seem nearly impossible, frequently changing or washing pillowcases will help to keep dirt, oil and dead skin cells from building up and seeping into skin night after night. 4) Eat an optimal diet. Henry suggests eating a diet rich in antioxidants, which may help protect skin, pointing to foods such as carrots, apricots, spinach, tomatoes, berries, beans, peas, lentils, salmon and nuts. Conversely, diets high in processed or refined sugars or other carbohydrates and unhealthy fats may promote skin aging. 5) Get moving. Ever notice how your skin glows after a good workout? Physical activity promotes circulation, which carries oxygen and nutrients that nourish skin cells. Increased blood flow also helps whisk away waste products like free radicals from your cells. Further, exercise can reduce stress that may adversely affect your skin. Taking a few minutes each day to care for your skin is well worth your while, especially when it comes to combating the effects of pollutants encountered daily. Visit Cerave.com to find dermatologist-recommended skincare products suitable for your skin's needs. cheakwoolfolk.com

THE MAKING OF THE MOBILE MAN CAVE FOR FOOTBALL TAILGATE SEASON By: BPT

It's football time, and many Americans are making the annual pilgrimage to man caves forged in living rooms, basements or garages. There, fans hunker down for hours in the extreme comforts of recliners, snacks and drinks, and of course, mega-sized TV screens. Yet for others, the football experience is superior outside the stadium at tailgating gatherings with family and friends. After all, tailgating is an American tradition with roots dating back to the Civil War and the First Battle of Bull Run, according to the American Tailgaters Association.

The cook's playbook Great food makes for great tailgates. Beyond the staples of chips and burgers and beers, tailgaters can step outside the regular playbook and bring new recipes. Look for inventive recipes easy to make in crockpots - mozzarella-stuffed meatballs, anyone? - or bring along a deep fryer for a new take on deviled eggs. No place like dome

The tailgate party has evolved significantly since then, and now football fans can further power-up their tailgating experience to create a "mobile man cave" that rivals the comforts of home. An offensive line - of vehicles A big tailgate party does not require a big vehicle. While a hatchback or pickup truck is certainly a plus, most important is to have the wheels that can deliver the goods. One fresh take is for tailgaters to team up by lining up a caravan of cars for a multi-stationed tailgate. This game plan can help tailgaters distribute the load of goods and equipment that is needed to make the mobile man cave a fan cave that's comfortable for all. Put in the QB of TVs A TV is vital for the tailgating entertainment. There are many options for outdoor TVs that provide great pictures even in the sun's glare and in extreme temperatures. Tailgaters also have plenty of choices for receiving a great picture, from portable satellite dishes or services to digital streaming options or even old-fashioned rabbit ear antennas. Be sure to test out the picture in advance so it is ready to go come kickoff. cheakwoolfolk.com

When it comes to football season, the weather is always a factor - but tailgaters should not let a little inclement weather derail the event. Primarily, be prepared with the right gear to make the experience comfortable and enjoyable. A canopy is always recommended to provide a "domelike" feel, while cooling fans and portable heaters will be welcomed for climate control. Linebacker-like power The most critical factor of all in making a powered-up tailgate is the power source itself. That's where a generator like the Powerhorse Portable Inverter Generator from Northern Tool + Equipment comes in. This generator serves as a quiet, mobile, linebacker-strong and safe power source that can plug in all the tailgating needs to make sure the TV, food, heat and more are running to the 20, the 15, the 10, the 5 ... Touchdown! CKWMAG.ONLINE

Take a tour of Italy without leaving home Dreaming of an Italian vacation? You can experience the country's stunning, ancient and romantic regions without even leaving home. The wines of Italy embody the heart and soul of the country itself, being a part of the land, the air and the water of the regions in which they're grown. Letting the vineyards be your guide, you'll travel from the Tuscan coast to the Adriatic's long, sandy beaches, to the black and rich slopes of an active volcano. You'll marvel at Sicily's crystal blue waters and be awed by Campania's storied past. You can even learn about some dedicated winemakers along the way. Invite your friends for a backyard wine tasting on a balmy evening, open up these Italian whites, and enjoy their not-commonly-known varieties accompanied by light, Italian fare. Buon viaggio! Ca'Marcanda Vistamare: The playful name of this wine, which means "sea view," was inspired by the Tyrrhenian sea breeze, the sun and the cheerful, lighthearted outlook of the Tuscan coast. Coastal innkeepers would use "vistamare" to entice hotel guests, even if their rooms only offered a limited view of the Mediterranean. The vineyards used for Vistamare actually enjoy a panoramic view of the Tuscan horizon, and their grapes are gently touched by the salt air and brilliant colors of the Tuscan sea. Vistamare is fresh and light on the palate, with notes of bergamot, pear and nectarine. Then it shifts toward a more mineral and spicy character, with notes of flint, rosemary and saffron. The wine gets riper in the finish with hints of mango. Terlato Vineyards Colli Orientali del Friuli Friulano: Travel to Northern Italy's Friuli region, where mountains overlook the Adriatic Sea, its coastline dotted with lagoons and long sandy beaches. Friulano is the predominant wine here because of the ideal growing conditions for this indigenous varietal. This Friulano comes from very old vines located on Estate vineyards at 1,050 feet above sea level, with cool nights and warm days, ideal for producing wines with excellent acidity and elegance.

Attention to detail gives the wine floral aromas with distinct pear and almond notes, and a creamy, full-bodied texture. Anselmi San Vincenzo: Grown in the Monteforte area within the Veneto region of Northern Italy, San Vincenzo vines are planted on 110 acres of volcanic tuff and limestone. Veneto is encircled by Lake Garda, the Dolomite Mountains and the Adriatic Sea. Imagine floating down the Grand Canal in Venice, and seeing Juliet's balcony in Verona before finding a cafe where you can sip this delicious wine of the region. San Vincenzo is medium bodied and fruit forward, with a clean, dry finish and scents of minerals, lemon, lime and melon. Alta Mora Etna Bianco: Travel south to Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, where these grapes are grown and harvested on the slopes of the active volcano, Mount Etna. The soil is black, fertile and dynamic, and the name Alta Mora translates to "tall, black," representing the great heights of the vineyards on the mountain and the dark, black volcanic soil. This wine is a slight nod to Sauvignon Blanc in style. It's fresh and fruity, with great minerality, and a classic match for seafood dishes. It's easy to imagine sipping it while gazing out onto the Mediterranean's crystal blue waters. Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina: This vineyard is in Sorbo Serpico, a tiny village in Campania's Irpinia region, near Mount Vesuvius. The area, with its numerous castles and fortresses, has ancient roots, and has been a transit land between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas. Named after the method of vine cultivation in Sannio at the end of the Roman Era called Falangs ("poles"), this Falanghina is ideal as an aperitif. It can also accompany various types of appetizers, plates of simple fish and vegetables as well as fresh cheeses. Floral notes like white blossoms and delicate apple and pear float through the air as you sip this medium intensity wine, which is crisp with hints of spice, light almond and a slightly bitter orange peel character. Let these wines bring the beauty of Italy to your table tonight. Cincin!

3 trends Small businesses are far more influential than most people may realize. That influence is felt well beyond Main Street. Small businesses make up 99.7 percent of all businesses in the U.S., and these firms employ nearly half (48 percent) the workforce, according to the 2018 Small Business Profile compiled by the U.S. Small Business Administration. In addition, take a look at recent trends and developments in technology. It's clear that these changes can give entrepreneurs that extra leverage to scale up. Here are three to consider. Big companies have big opportunities for small firms Back in the 20th century, a large company would get things done in this very straightforward way. Wherever there was a need, they hired someone directly to perform that task, whether it was a driver or an accountant. Under today's leaner models, these big companies are finding it's much more efficient to partner with other firms to fulfill certain needs. According to Deloitte, 31 percent of IT services have been outsourced, as well as 32 percent of human resources. This increasing acceptance of outsourcing is a huge growth opportunity for small businesses owners.

For example, Amazon recently announced it is actively seeking and helping entrepreneurs who are willing to deliver packages as their contractors. The mega retailer will even go as far as helping with startup costs so long as these smaller firms deliver their packages. Landing a contract with a big corporation is a significant milestone for any company, but starting out with that lucrative contract is sure to let these startups hit the ground running. Better connections for greater flexibility When today's entrepreneur has a new role to fill, they're not confined to the talent pool in their immediate community. Because we now have the tools and connectivity to work from anywhere, a business owner can expand the search across multiple states! What's more, these flexible, work from anywhere options can give business owners the inspiration to do things differently. Having greater collaboration means having access to more options to fit specific needs. For example, what is the very nature of being a small business owner? It's dealing with a fluctuating volume of work. Tapping into the talent pool of freelancers to work on these specific, short-term tasks and projects is easier than ever, because for a segment of workers, freelancing is increasingly becoming a way of life. Freelancers currently make up 36 percent of the workforce, according to a study from Upwork. And, if trends maintain, most Americans will be freelancers by 2027. Thanks to remote options with easy access to talent, small businesses can easily set up temporary or ongoing as-needed work arrangements. When you partner with Dell for your computing needs, you'll get the expert help and support so you can set up the perfect flexible workspace system. More automation brings better efficiencies Without a doubt, new technology works in favor of small businesses and entrepreneurs because they have many tools at their disposal to automate labor intensive processes, be more productive and cut costs. For example, entrepreneurs can use software to process client payments and even set up automated payments, saving hours and costs associated with collecting, processing and reconciling under the traditional paper check payment system. That translates into a more efficient billing department that can spend more time focused on complex issues. Let Dell equip your small business with the right tech tools, tailor made for your venture and backed with support, so you can focus on running your business. cheakwoolfolk.com

52 weeks of growth: 4 ways Puerto Rico is key to world agricultureǘ

For a region the size of Connecticut, Puerto Rico packs a big punch when it comes to its contribution to world agriculture. Many people are unaware, for example, that the 5,335-square-mile commonwealth is the research and development headquarters for up to 85 percent of the commercial corn, soybean and other hybrid seeds grown in the U.S., part of a biotech industry thriving for 35 years. "Puerto Rico is, in many cases, the first and most important location for the development of new crops," notes Liliana SĂĄnchez CortĂŠs, a site manager for global agrochemical and seed producer Syngenta. The nation's importance to the food chain is partly why Syngenta was so quick to help after Hurricane Maria destroyed an estimated 80 percent of the nation's crop value last September. The storm ruined $780 million worth of agriculture yields, while knocking down structures and landscapes nationwide. The agribusiness firm operates three research farms in the commonwealth and employs 45 people - three of whom lost their homes in the storm. In response to the crisis, a cross-departmental Syngenta team from Wisconsin organized airlifts of emergency supplies, including generators, satellite phones and 220,000 pounds of food, water and household goods. The company also donated $200,000 to a local food bank and contributed new pollen sources for the region's bees.

Why is Puerto Rico so important to the future of worldwide agriculture? Consider the following: Much of the world's hybrid seed has been grown or processed in some way in Puerto Rico's nursery systems, which include three Syngenta farms. In fact, Syngenta analysts estimate its new soybean varieties would take two to three more years to develop without Puerto Rico's facilities. Thanks to its unique climate allowing for 52 weeks of planting and harvesting, the region's environment is ideal for seed R&D protocols. Because of the nation's efficient and expedited plant-breeding programs, researchers can use data from fall crops to develop new hybrid and variety combinations that can be planted the following spring. The ag biotech industry there brings in more than $65 million in net benefits for the local economy, and analysts say the inter-industry multiplier effect stretches that amount to nearly $135 million. This year, some 860,000 people there are employed in the ag trade. Though the hurricane hit at a critical time between growing seasons, Syngenta has since been able to repair flood and structural damage at its facilities, replant seedlings and hire temporary employees to fill in for those seeking sanctuary. In particular, funding for socially-conscious businesses has become more easily achievable through crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Even Kickstarter owners Yancey Strickler and Perry Chen insisted that their crowdfunding platform become a Benefit Corporation, ensuring they remain focused on their mission to bring creative projects to life rather than simply increasing the size of their own profits. These crowdsourcing platforms are an efficient way for companies to find investors, but also to network and get their message out to a broader public. Cuvee Coffee, founded by Mike McKim, partners with non-profits like Livestrong and ‘Austin Food & Wine Alliance.’ McKim is also actively involved in Bunker Labs, an organization to help military veterans and their spouses start and grow businesses.

A boost from tech At the center of many altruistic businesses is the robust use of technology, which has allowed many highly successful small businesses to support social and environmental causes. It's not only that having dependable and easy-to-use technology is critical for these businesses, but many tech giants have implemented programs to support conscious capitalism in small businesses. For instance, as one of the world's leading IT suppliers, Dell has been particularly passionate about helping businesses with an eye for social change and environmental consciousness. Through its 2020 Legacy of Good plan, which outlines its own sustainability goals, it has helped small businesses use technology in a way that drives progress and social change. Dependable and affordable technology is essential to promoting social change, and that's why so many entrepreneurs and investors are realizing that when paired with technology, ethical business practices can do a lot of good and turn a profit.

Three tax savings strategies for a secure retirement to try right now

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

Individuals who rushed to prepay property taxes after the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act may have saved some money in 2018 - but that's pennies compared to the long-term tax savings taxpayers should take advantage of before the TCJA's individual tax provisions are expected to expire in 2026, according to Robert Fishbein, vice president and corporate counsel at Prudential Financial. Also expected to expire in 2026? According to trustees for Social Security, that's when Medicare's main trust fund will run out of money. With the increasing likelihood that Social Security and Medicare benefits may be reduced in the future, it's more important than ever to use every technique available to maximize your retirement savings. Three outside-the-box strategies could make an enormous difference in your retirement readiness. The sooner you start, the more you may save. Fund an HSA for retirement health care Estimates suggest even a healthy 65-year-old couple will need at least $275,000 to cover retirement health care costs. A Health Savings Account, or HSA, provides a way to save that money without paying a dime in taxes. An HSA account is available to individuals enrolled in a high deductible health insurance plan. First, these individuals can fund their HSA through a tax-deductible contribution or pre-tax payroll deduction. Second, any interest and investment gains are tax-free. Finally, the funds can be withdrawn tax-free to pay for qualified medical expenses- a triple tax advantage over a traditional savings account. The best part? There is no requirement to use HSA funds in the year of contribution, which means funds can grow on a tax-favored basis for future health care expense needs. cheakwoolfolk.com

For 2018, family contribution limits are $6,900, or $7,900 if you are 55 or older, and those amounts are indexed for inflation in future years. If you start contributing the maximum even as late as age 55, and earn 3 percent per year, you could have more than $90,000 to pay for your retirement health care by age 65. If you start contributing the maximum as early as age 40, you could have saved almost $270,000. These funds will continue to grow tax-free in retirement until you need them. If you don't use HSA funds in full before you die, excess funds are subject to income tax, but will be otherwise available for your heirs. Consider a Roth IRA conversion The typical dogma says that converting an IRA or traditional 401(k) to a Roth IRA does not make sense if you expect your tax rate in retirement to be lower than at the time of conversion. However, lesser known benefits of a Roth IRA may make it worthwhile to have at least part of your retirement assets in Roth IRA form. Start with no required minimum distributions. With a Roth you aren't forced to draw down your funds once you attain age 70½ and can continue to benefit from the tax-free growth, thereby maximizing the after-tax funds eventually available for you or your heirs. Another significant benefit of a Roth IRA or Roth 401(k) is tax diversification. For example, you may choose to take taxable distributions up to a certain amount and then tax-free distributions to avoid a higher income tax bracket. If you are a high-income taxpayer, Roth IRA distributions are not considered income when determining thresholds for increased Medicare premium charges or the 3.8 percent income tax surcharge on investment gain. If your income is more modest, Roth IRA distributions are not considered income when determining whether you are subject to income tax on Social Security benefits. If anything, a conversion is more attractive now since you have an opportunity to convert and pay income tax with marginal rates that are generally lower than under prior law. Since individual tax law changes are temporary and tax rates will revert to the former higher amounts starting in 2026, you have an eight-year window to benefit from lower rates. Make "backdoor" Roth IRA contributions The tax law prescribes income limits so high-income individuals may not make a direct contribution to a Roth IRA. However, there are no income limits on converting traditional IRA funds to a Roth IRA. Any person under age 70.5 who has earned income by year-end can make an IRA contribution. While income limits may prevent you from making a pre-tax contribution, you can make this contribution even if you have fully funded a 401(k) or another employer plan. Once you have made your contribution to a traditional IRA, simply convert that amount to your Roth IRA. As long as this is your only traditional IRA and you have made an after-tax contribution, then an immediate conversion will have converted a tax-deferred asset into a potentially tax-free asset. If you have multiple IRAs, the IRAs are aggregated to determine how much is taxable upon conversion. While we spend much time on our investment strategies to help gain an extra percentage or two of investment yield, these tax planning strategies can be a more reliable way of maximizing your after-tax retirement income and wealth for your family - no matter how Social Security and Medicare turn out. Prudential Financial, its affiliates, and their financial professionals do not render tax or legal advice. Please consult with your tax and legal advisors regarding your personal circumstances. cheakwoolfolk.com

WHY PUBLIC TRANSIT IS A KEY ECONOMIC ISSUE FOR GROWING CITIES PRESENTED BY BPT

We'd love to take our daily commute for granted. Except, we can't. It is essential that we continue to make public transportation as efficient as possible for commuters. Over the decades, as a nation we have put investing in our transportation infrastructure, particularly our bus and rail systems, on the back burner. The result: Today's public transit backlog sits at $90 billion, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. This is a missed opportunity to make our public transportation systems more efficient and our cities more productive, and it has serious economic implications. For instance, a lack of investment in our public transportation infrastructure costs the U.S. economy $340 billion in revenue over a six-year period, according to the study, "The Economic Cost of Failing to Modernize Public Transportation." The study was conducted by the Economic Development Research Group Inc. for APTA.

cheakwoolfolk.com

"Our failure as a nation to address America's public transit modernization needs has wideranging negative effects," says APTA president and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas, "because lost time in travel makes a region's economy less productive." CKWMAG.ONLINE

Failing to meet growing public transit needs As the number of U.S. workers continues to rise, so do the pressures on all areas of our infrastructure. Since 1995, the U.S. has seen a 42 percent rise in public transit miles traveled. Despite that, needed improvements to our bus and rail assets have not kept pace with growth, the study concludes. Furthermore, the study shows how, as the U.S. fails to invest in the upkeep and maintenance in the nation's public transit assets, it leads to service interruptions and lost time, which leads to lost wages. Dorval R. Carter Jr., president of the Chicago Transit Authority, oversees a legacy rail system that's more than 100 years old, and faces the challenge of fixing or replacing aging infrastructure. "Parts of our rail system date back to the late 1800s," Carter says, "we are facing an unmet - and growing capital need of nearly $13 billion and meeting it has become even more challenging given funding constraints not only at the federal level, but especially at the state and local levels." The impact of public transit on local economies Service interruptions and delays because America has not kept up with transit investments have a direct and immediate effect on the economy. If workers can't get to work on time, it affects their productivity. When an aging road and rail system adds time and delays to commutes, that puts the brakes on economic output. "Based on recent surveys of our riders in Central Ohio, we know 70 percent of our customers rely on our service to reach work," says Joanna Pinkerton, president and CEO of the Central Ohio Transit Authority. "This is just one example of why it is vital to continue investment in public transportation infrastructure to support residents and the economy." Pinkerton adds that over the next 30 years, Central Ohio's public transit system will have to evolve to prepare for 1 million additional residents and 600,000 jobs. The quality of a city's public transportation system is an important factor for companies that are looking to expand or relocate. For example, in 2014, Atlanta's public transportation system played a role in State Farm Insurance's bid to locate 8,000 new jobs there. One year ago, when Amazon asked cities to create proposals for its second headquarters, the online retailer indicated that it wanted to hear from cities with access to public transit. The good news is, Congress has allocated a spending increase for the 2018 fiscal year budget for public transit. "While this is a positive step forward in helping to address the nation's aging public transit infrastructure," Skoutelas says, "this momentum must be maintained by providing similar funding levels for 2019."

A WORD FROM cBILL HUSTON BY BILL HUSTON cheakwoolfolk.com

CKWMAG.ONLINE

Introduction America's inner cities have vast undervalued assets that are largely unseen by conventional businesses. The resulting underinvestment reflects a serious information gap affecting neighborhood markets. In today's information age, where market intelligence is the single most valuable commodity in business, very little reliable, accessible data is available about emerging urban markets in American inner-cities where there are $100 of millions of dollars are spent in these high-density urban populations. Understanding how the hood developed and what tools we have to improve our neighborhoods. Understanding Redlining and its Lasting Impact In the 1930s, government surveyors graded neighborhoods in 239 cities, colorcoding them green for “best,” blue for “still desirable,” yellow for “definitely declining” and red for “hazardous.” The “redlined” areas were the ones local lenders discounted as credit risks, in large part because of the residents’ racial and ethnic demographics. They also took into account local amenities and home prices. These neighborhoods were predominantly made up of African Americans. Loans in these neighborhoods were unavailable or very expensive, making it more difficult for low-income minorities to buy homes and setting the stage for the country’s persistent racial wealth gap. A study by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, shows that the vast majority of neighborhoods marked in red ink on maps drawn by the federal Home Owners’ Loan Corp. are today much more likely than other areas to comprise lower-income, minority residents in 2018. It would seem that many of these places have been trapped in the past, locking many inner-city African-American neighborhoods into concentrated poverty. These discriminatory Policies that influence access to capital and credit have long-lasting effects on residential patterns, neighborhoods’ economic health and household accumulation of wealth. Today 3 out of 4 neighborhoods “redlined” on government maps 80 years ago continuing to struggle economically today. The government has provided tremendous amounts of political and financial aid to ensure that these banks function at a high-level in the management of our current economy. The Federal Treasury Department spent $700 million to bailout the banks when they went completely off the rails driven by greed, with little or no concern for the welfare of the American people that ended up paying for their unscrupulous behavior. Why is there any question as to why these banks should not help Black America that these banks so severely handicapped and continue to negatively impact through discriminatory lending practices.

A Revitalized CRA Community Development Loan Pools Minimized risk. Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) credit. Community development loan pools provide the opportunity to simultaneously achieve both. Many banks will lend, grant, or invest funds into low-moderate income neighborhoods based on the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). The community development loan fund provides a mechanism for banks to minimize risk and simultaneously meet the CRA requirements. Similar to revolving loan funds, community development loan pools are seen as a way to help financial institutions efficiently and effectively meet requirements of the CRA investment test. Since the CRA's inception in 1977, financial institutions have struggled with achieving a balance between safety-andsoundness requirements and meeting the needs of their entire community. CRAqualified community development loans and investments often carry a slightly higher risk, making them less attractive from a safety-and-soundness perspective. So what makes a community development loan pool different? The characteristics that distinguish loan pools from other forms of community development finance are multiple investors, a targeted focus and less-thanmarket-rate return to investors. The existence of multiple investors creates a shared-risk environment that allows for more flexible loan criteria than with one financial institution. Community development revolving loan funds with the same characteristics are considered loan pools. Community development loan pools have been used across the globe to help small businesses get their feet on the ground, to help families achieve home ownership, and to assist nonprofit and for-profit developers with affordablehousing predevelopment costs. Projects previously considered too risky for one financial institution have become funded successes through this shared-risk environment. The central purpose of community development loan pools is to fill financing needs in a community where credit demands are not or cannot be filled by individual conventional financial institutions. Community development loan pools can be structured in a variety of ways and have very specific purposes directed at an identified community need. Some pools require equal investments from their investors, while others allow investors to decide in what share of the total they want to invest. Many loan pools consist of public, private and individual investments. Regardless of the structure, financial institutions that make investments may receive CRA investment test credit for their total investment or CRA lending test credit for a percentage of the pool's loans equal to the percentage of their investment. cheakwoolfolk.com

Targeted tax incentives Capital access is very important. But there also have to be the right kind of incentives to obtain and use capital. That is why a third important piece of our strategy to revive the power of the market for low-income families and communities has been the use of targeted tax incentives. These tax incentives exist to help develop inner-cities: ʅ "Brownfields" tax incentives to help spur the private sector to clean up and put back into productive use environmentally contaminated properties in distressed communities;. ʅ Opportunity Zones are economically-distressed communities where new investments that are driven by capital gains tax reduction for investing in designated opportunity zones using opportunity funds. ʅ special wage credits for hiring those who have the hardest time in the labor force particularly families coming off welfare and returning citizens. ʅ The low income housing tax credit permanent, helping to create 80-90,000 units of affordable housing every year. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 has already had a giant effect on the affordable housing business. Developers are still getting used to a substantial drop in the prices investors are willing to pay for low-income housing tax credits (LIHTCs) because of the new law. However, tax reform also created the new Opportunity Zones tax benefit. The zones should bring a substantial amount of new capital to a variety of equity investments in new “Opportunity Funds,” including real estate projects in the zones that build or preserve affordable housing. Benefits for Affordable Housing For new LIHTC investments located in Opportunity Zones, the benefits of the program are likely to significantly increase the yields for many equity investors. Yields could rise by as much as 200 to 400 basis points. “If their current yield is 6%, the new yield would be 8% to 10% or more. Investors LIHTC investors are primarily major institutional banks, and they invest in the housing credit program for myriad reasons, including economic benefit and the need to meet their Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) obligations. Opportunity Zone investors are more likely to be high-net-worth individuals, managed investment funds, life insurance companies, and mutual funds that regularly realize significant capital gains. All of these initiatives -- an expanding and innovating CDFI Fund, a more focused CRA, and our carefully targeted tax incentives -- are the vital microeconomic counterpart to the sound macroeconomic policies we have pursued these past five years. Both are aimed at the same core goal: bringing more economic opportunities and higher living standards to every American. Our commitment to sound policies, both at the macro and a micro level has already paid important dividends in some of America's most disadvantaged communities. But we must do more. And we must work together to do it. Our efforts can help jump start growth in your communities, but only if we have partners like you. Your organization's make the critical difference in community after community across the country. I applaud your hard work, and your success. Thank you very much. Sou Sou are informal financing groups that pool resources for community members who need access to capital. Each member of the Sou Sou makes a standard payment to the fund. Disbursements are made to members of the Sou Sou at regular intervals, often monthly. The beneficiary rotates until everyone in the group has received a disbursement. Crowdfunding the Talented Tenth I was working on a creating a spreadsheet of black professional organizations that would be my target for a political crowdfunding campaign that is a collaboration between Lynn P and her crowdfunding portals and WeCycl, Inc my crowdfunding and digital marketing company. I was entering data when I was hit with an epiphany. Black professional organizations leading the charge to economic and political empowerment not only through education, but through crowdinvesting. "The talented tenth" a concept espoused by Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois to describe the likelihood of one in ten black people becoming leaders of our race in the world, through methods such as continuing their education, writing books, or becoming directly involved in social change. Crowdinvesting provides another avenue for AfricanAmerican leaders to empower the community through politics and economics. Crowdinvesting provides an element of both social engagement and capital aggregation for the community using social media and the platform. As I input the data of the immense number of Black professional organizations the thought came to me that for the price of a single cup of coffee per month these organizations have the ability, through crowdfunding, to raise $5 million monthly to finance the incredible work these organizations are doing. When put into proper context is, a single cup of coffee a month a large sacrifice, when we observe the many cheakwoolfolk.com

sacrifices our ancestors made for us to be able to access an education or the right to vote? Due to the strict levels of segregation and discrimination in the United States black professionals were forced to create their own associations. Today these associations of black professionals may just be the segmented crowds needed to bring crowdinvesting to African-American communities as a political and economic empowerment tool. The crowds are already formed now it is all about the messaging that will be able to engage and excite these crowds to constructive action. Conclusion If we raised $5 per month from 1 million black professionals to support their organizations on a rotating basis that would be $5 million monthly that would support the black professional organizations and help them prosper and carry out their missions. As these groups became more and more familiar with crowdfunding they would be able to move to Buy The Block and begin the process of crowdinvesting. If these same 1 million Black professionals invested $100 the minimum for an investment on Buy the Block monthly through a dollar cost averaging process that would be $100 million monthly invested in real estate development and entrepreneurship in inner-cities with a estimated 10 percent return on investment we would achieve economic empowerment, increased real estate development, accelerated entrepreneurship and job creation

Opportunity Zones, Opportunity Funds The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) created a new tax-advantaged Opportunity Zone program to encourage investments in economically-distressed communities. Congress had previously tried similar approaches with Empowerment Zones and Renewal Communities. The opportunity zones are vastly different based on the lack of governmental oversight role and for its generosity to investors. The lack of governmental oversight and its generosity to investors. How are the lowincome residents that live in these capital starved neighborhoods benefiting from this new investment that will flow into their communities. If there are to be any substantial changes to me made in many inner-city communities there has to be an investment in human and social capital as well financial capital.

Only one in four low-income areas in any state can be designated as an Opportunity Zone, so states must reject more neighborhoods than they select. What is the selection process and how did it proceed. In Louisville the outcome of the selected census tracts are hard to understand if the goal is to improve distressed communities. The central business districts, and three rapidly gentrifying tracts of Nulu, Butchertown and Portland were deemed opportunity zones despite having already seen major capital investment in recent years, yet seven of the 18 poorest tracts were not designated opportunity zones. .

Bill Huston is an Urban Development Consultant that is working to build inner-city economies that work for everyone and provide opportunities for every resident to participate, thrive, and build wealth. To do this, he: • Designs and implement community capital offerings • Help clients raise capital from their own communities in alignment with their values and goals. • Work in collaboration with wealthy investors, government entities, corporate and philanthropic foundations to create impact investment funds Bill founded Our Crowd Rocks Consulting to upend the traditional models for raising capital that has left out vast, untapped numbers of low-moderate income Black inner-city residents who want to invest in the businesses and organizations that provide real value to their communities. Our Crowd Rocks is leading a movement that is bringing new capital — by directly engaging the average person in the Black community as investors, real estate developers, and entrepreneurs — to the new crowd economy — an economy that is open, democratized, resilient, just, and sustainable. This movement of “crowd capitalists” is questioning the old paradigms and bringing new models to the table that expand the capital aggregation options for nonprofits and social enterprises that are more democratic and values-driven. These models allow all stakeholders to benefit as ventures thrive. Bill was named one of the Top 19 Global Crowdfunding Experts by Inc. Magazine in 2014, featured on the Marketing and PR panel at the 2017 Crowd Invest Summit.
