EDITOR'S LETTER JUNE/JULY 2018

What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade. Gertrude Jekyll

It's that time again! Joyful June my loves! It is the time of summer heat and outdoor fun. A time to reflect on the previous months and put a plan in place for the goals we’ve not achieved yet. However, at the core summer is that time that allows us to view our surrounding in the most glorious sunlight and fresh perspective. This issue is dedicated and focused on The Kentucky Derby 2018 and how I personally, have witnessed diversity become a part the fastest 2 minutes on a horse track. bAs I’ve matured and traveled I am always led back to the city of my birth Louisville KY. For us Louisville lovers, The Kentucky Derby is much more than a horse race it’s a time of comradery, family fun and community prosperity. Within this issue is a visual journey of what The Kentucky Derby looks like through our “eyes”. Enjoy! Chea You can't win the Kentucky Derby unless you're on a thoroughbred. Joe Torre

FASHION ACCESSORIES

The most well-known fashion accessory is of course, jewelry. For teenagers and children, fashion jewelry pieces that are popular often include colorful, oversized pieces, as well as charm necklaces or charm bracelets. For men, a popular piece of jewelry often includes large pendant necklaces, many of which display a cross or another popular or meaningful symbol. As for women, popular pieces of fashion jewelry include watches, earnings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, pins, and so forth. Another major fashion accessory that you might want to look at is a new handbag. While purses can also be trendy, it is the handbag that has become a real status symbol and major fashion accessory. They come in a huge array of different styles, so it is common to own more than one if your budget allows. In fact, many women out there like to match their fashion accessories, including their purses and handbags, with the clothing that they wear. Updating your handbag every season can be an easy and relatively inexpensive way to update your whole look. If your wardrobe is filled with classic pieces that flatter your body shape and suit your coloring, then simply choosing a new trendy handbag can instantly bring your look up to the minute. Travel bags are also considered a fashion accessory but differ from handbags in that a lot of them are designed for both sexes. A travel bag is generally a small bag that can be used as carry-on luggage for a plane ride, a nappy/diaper bag or a laptop carrying case. It can also be the so called “man bag” that is increasing in popularity all the time. Many major fashion labels also have their own luggage line as well. Shoes are also a fashion accessory, although many do not necessarily consider them to be. Most often, women’s shoes are associated as fashion accessories, as opposed to men’s shoes. One of the reasons for this is the amazing array of women’s shoe style available, for example: athletic shoes, casual sandals, elegant sandals, flat dress shoes, stilettos, kitten heels, sling backs, mules, pumps and the list goes on. As with handbags and purses, most women own multiple pairs of shoes and aim to coordinate their shoes, especially for work, with the rest of their ensemble. Shoes can make or break an outfit, so think about the type of image you want to portray and make sure your shoes fit with that theme.

Belts are also a major fashion accessory. While for many men and boys, belts are not necessarily a fashion accessory as much as a fashion necessity to hold their pants up; the same isn’t true for women. Women’s belts come in several different sizes, shapes, and styles and virtually every season there is a new “must-have” style. There is everything from casual, crocheted belts to wear with jeans, to elegant, black leather belts as a pair of slimline black trousers for work. Belts, handbags, purses, travel bags, jewelry and shoes are just a few of the many fashion accessories that you can use to make a good outfit into a great one.

On May 4, 2018, West Louisville Visual News and Glam Therapy had the distinct pleasure of meeting Mrs. Marcia Riggs Hawkins. Marcia is the proud owner of Personal Designs by Marcia. She customizes hats for Oaks Day and the Kentucky Derby. Her passion for Derby hats started 10 years ago. In 2008, she wanted to attend Oaks Day at Churchill Downs to enjoy the horse races but she could not afford to buy a Derby hat. At the time Derby hats were not readily available at affordable prices. She decided to make her own hat. For the first two Oaks Day events, she received warm compliments for her hat designs. During the third Oaks Day she attended, a woman approached her and asked how much did Marcia want for the hat on her head. Marcia was baffled and wondered why a woman would want another woman’s hat of her head. The woman insisted she would pay any amount of money, if Marcia would let her buy the hat off her head. Once Marcia realized the woman was dead serious, she randomly said the hat was $150. The woman immediately turned to her husband and asked him to go to the ATM to get $150 from the ATM.

At this validating moment, this marked the beginning of Marcia’s Oak/Derby Hat making business. Marcia wanted to share her gift of helping other woman make a statement or Hat-ti-tude with their Oaks/Derby without breaking the bank. Marcia creates hats to complement a woman’s personality and enhance her natural beauty. These empowering hats help a woman to stand out and heighten her sense of class. Although Marcia recently relocated from Kentucky to North Carolina, she will still come to Kentucky each year during the 1st week of May to sell her Oaks/Derby hats and accessories. When you get an Oaks/Derby hat by Marcia you will receive a one-of-a-kind hat to adorn your crown. All Marcia’s hats are made with angelic care and lots of love. .The long summer months are full of potential. From hitting the beach to hitting the open road, there are plenty of activities for you to get outdoors and explore the warm weather. To make the most of the sunny days and star-studded nights, you need to be prepared so you have fun, stay safe and keep your health top of mind.

6 SUMMER ESSENTIALS TO STAY HEALTHY AND MAXIMIZE THE SEASON www.cheakwoolfolk.com

CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

www.ckwmag.info

33

To have a healthy summer full of incredible memories, experts recommend you don't leave home without these essentials: Sunscreen: Any time you'll be outside, it's important to wear sunscreen. This is especially important when spending time around sand and water as these reflect the sun's rays, which put you at higher risk for sunburn. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends everyone use sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB rays), is SPF 30 or higher, and is water resistant. Sunglasses: Did you know your eyes can get sunburned? Protect those peepers by keeping sunglasses on hand. If you wear prescription glasses, a stylish and affordable solution is Solar Shield, available in clip-ons and fits-over designs. Solar Shield sunglasses are polarized and come at an affordable price point, so you can have a pair with you for all your summer adventures. Put a pair in the car, your workout bag, purse and backpack, the cabin and anywhere else you'll need sun protection. Water: Staying hydrated is important for keeping your body well, especially as the temperatures rise. When outdoors during summer, your body needs H2O to stay energized and keep cool. If you're doing an activity in the heat, you'll need to increase your water intake. Keep a bottle nearby and drink often. If you tend to forget, set an alarm on your phone or use an app to remind you regularly. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

34

Insect repellent: Warm weather brings out people to enjoy nature, and whether you like it or not, that includes bugs. From mosquitoes and ticks to ants and chiggers, bugs thrive in the summer. The first step to keep yourself protected is to be aware of what insects you may encounter during the activities you have planned for the day. Next, be prepared by using appropriate insect repellent and clothing. Shoes: The unofficial shoe of summer has to be the flip-flop. This easy-on, easy-off shoe has been keeping feet cool for generations. The problem is flip-flops offer little support and put you at higher risk of injury. From stubbing your toes to being a tripping hazard, flip-flops are a flop when it comes to your health. Support feet and be ready for summer by shopping for supportive sandals with toe and ankle straps. For example, athletic-style sandals are trendy, durable and will last more than one season, making them a worthwhile investment. Cotton clothing: All-natural cotton can serve you well when on summer adventures. Cotton breathes, meaning it allows air to circulate against the body so you don't get too hot. It also can wick away sweat and dries quickly. Whether a classic cotton T-shirt or a trendy swimsuit coverup, it's the ideal material for covering up and staying cool. These six must-have summer essentials will help you feel your best so you can maximize every day to the fullest. Have fun and stay safe for the best summer yet. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

Women and Cancer: Safeguard Your Future Fertility

www.cheakwoolfolk.com

35

Fertility may be the farthest thing from your mind when you’ve just received a cancer diagnosis, but it’s the right time to think about your future family. Cancer treatments can affect your ability to get pregnant or carry a baby to term. Ask your doctor about preserving your fertility before your treatment begins.

CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

www.ckwmag.info

36

Understanding how treatment may affect your fertility is the first step in assessing your options for fertility preservation. Chemotherapy can damage eggs, the sacs holding the eggs and the production of sex hormones. Radiation therapy has similar effects, sometimes causing irregular periods or halting them altogether. Both treatments can cause infertility immediately or years down the road by inducing early menopause. Premature menopause occurs when a woman’s menstrual cycles end before she turns 40. Surgical treatments removing both ovaries will cause menopause right away. Cancer treatment can also affect a woman’s pregnancy. For example, high-dose radiation to the pelvic area can increase the danger of miscarriages and premature births. Regardless of the treatment they receive, women diagnosed with cancer have options to protect their fertility. Standard fertility preservation methods include embryo banking, shielding the pelvic region during radiation, and ovarian transposition – when surgeons secure the ovaries in a position away from the radiation field. The standard treatment for uterine or ovarian cancer is the removal of both ovaries and the uterus, but some women with early-stage cancer that has a low risk of spreading may be able to keep their ovaries. Women with early-stage cervical cancer may choose to have only their cervix removed and keep their uterus and ovaries. In the future, more options will be available. Researchers are exploring experimental fertility preservation methods such as egg banking and ovarian tissue banking. Women who undergo cancer treatment can often have a child in the future, but it’s important to know the risks ahead of time. Consult your doctor or oncologist about your chances of success. Or ask your doctor to recommend a reproductive endocrinologist, a fertility specialist. Learn more at savemyfertility.org.

New York City already mandates it and now Philadelphia is considering it. "It" is salt warnings on menu labels for any item considered too high in salt. The average American eats about 3,400 mg./day of sodium and recent studies indicate that's just about the right amount. Regardless, the federal government continues to recommend that people eat a maximum of between 1,500 and 2,400 mg./day of sodium. Yet, there is almost no population on earth that consumes this little salt. A 2014 study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, tested sodium consumption in more than 100,000 people in 18 countries. The study found that the healthy range for salt consumption was between 3,000 and 5,000 mg./day. The amount of salt Americans eat per day is on the low end of this range. Consuming insufficient amounts of salt can lead to the development of insulin resistance, diabetes, cardiovascular failure, dehydration, www.cheakwoolfolk.com CKW-The Chea K. I suppose my life began as normal as any. But along the way my childhood became troubled with physical and sexual abuse and a teen age pregnancy. True to the statistics I became somewhat promiscuous searching for what I could not find. I settled for a man with a good job and who was very attentive to my son. He was in fact, at first, a good provider. But as he traveled down the road of addiction he took his family with him. And I became the target of his angry rages. I gave him my power for 16 years. My life was what he said it could be. He timed my trip to and from work, to the store, and to church. I had no real friends outside the home who visited me, nor did I visit anyone. I believed him when he said, “if he couldn’t have me no one would”. I felt so downtrodden until I could not take it anymore. I contemplated having someone do something to him, but I knew I wouldn’t get away with it. And he was the father of my children. I felt like less than nothing. I believed my sons saw me as being weak. That was the way I saw myself. And I was about to break. I needed a lifeline.

40

I called the local Center for Women and Families, a shelter for women fleeing domestic violence. The shelter scheduled a day and time for me to come in. I arranged with family and friends to help me get my possessions and put some things in storage. My children and I reported to the shelter at the appointed time. It saved my life. It was then that I learned how powerful our minds are in shaping who we are. Abusers know that all too well. I had, to some degree, been brainwashed by my abuser. He told me I was nothing, I believed him. He told me no other man would want me. I had heard it all before. My own mother said I would never be anything except to be used by a man. I guessed he saw whatever it was she saw in me. But after 6 months at the Center I began to feel alive again. I worked hard on me for 6 months. I took a leave of absence from work for 30 days. He could not get to me to talk about us or anything else. I did not have to see him. It was not a shelter where he could come in and beg me to come home. I had tried those before and he had found me within hours. There was no protection to prevent him from doing exactly that. They were women who opened their homes when the Center for Women and Families was full, which was most of the time.

41

I will never forget the day that I could face myself in the mirror and say, ‘you are somebody”. I knew when I left the Center that I would always pay forward the inspiration and wisdom I received from women to women. I do this in my writing and speaking opportunities. It is my passion to provide encouragement and avenues of change to others as the Center did for me. I was able to make the changes I needed to make so that I could reclaim my life. Many people do not like change. But change happens whether you want it to or not. So, the goal should be to use change to your advantage. I know that there are women getting up going to work everyday and come home to an abusive partner. Or a housewife who feels trapped with no where to turn. I also know there are shelters out there with programs for victimized families. But I know there are those who don’t feel that they need shelters or programs. And some don’t, but we all need support. We all need that person who guides us and holds us accountable. That is what the coaching process is all about. The coach /client relationship should be built on trust, meeting ethical guidelines and professional standards. In the coach and client relationship there must be effective communication using active listening skills and the ability to ask powerful questions. The coach should create awareness, design actions that facilitate learning and gets results. The coach assists the client in task planning and goal setting. The coach also manages the client’s progress and holds him/her accountable for completion of the identified goals. I strongly believe that leaving is not enough. Even with all that I learned at the Center I had so much going on inside of me because of the years of abuse I experienced a break in reality and was diagnosed with PTSD. I fight anxiety and depression. But I am winning the fight, and this drives me to do more. If one never faces the reasons for accepting abusive behavior one is likely to repeat being in that situation with another partner.

42

Housing is the number one need for families fleeing domestic violence. And it is even more critical in an emergency. Shelters are usually full and family shelters are even more scarce. As a former Housing Program Manager, I have seen the need firsthand. As a grant administrator I have also seen how federal dollars are spent and know that there is never enough to fund every proposed program. It is necessary to explore other fund-raising options. But my dreams are huge, and I would like to fill the HOLE-Helping Others Live Empower. I plan to create a funding source that can assist families who need 1-7 days of temporary housing. Or they may need financial assistance for food or clothing and moving expenses, including first month rent and/or security deposit. Too many women stay because they have no other option and too many of them die. If I can address the number one need I may possibly be able to address other needs that will prevent the history of abuse from continuing. Please visit my website: www.valorielasley.com for information about The HOLE fund. The days are sometimes cold and dreary, and the sun doesn’t come out to shine. But things can be so much better, beginning in the mind.

Creative approaches to combat common menopausal symptoms

Today, women are learning that use of hormone therapy (HT) can minimize risks and maximize menopausal relief for common symptoms like hot flashes, dryness, mood swings, fractured sleep, brain fog, irritability and weight gain. When taken at the right time, estrogen therapy can lead to substantial improvements in health and quality of life and lower the risk of breast cancer, heart disease, and dementia. Women should be aware of one caveat: beginning estrogen after a woman's estrogen window closes at age 65 may increase their risk for breast cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's and osteoporosis. Heeding advice about how and when to stop taking HT is important and revealed in new studies featured in Dr. Seibel's The Estrogen Fix. The book reaffirms the safety of vaginal estrogen for the heart and brain, as well as its effectiveness in controlling weight; additionally, the book outlines newly available estrogens and progesterones, discusses misconceptions about compounded hormones and estrogen pellets and offers the latest hormone-free FDA solutions for women with vaginal dryness. The following are 5 creative approaches to combat menopausal symptoms: 1. Hot flashes: Women experiencing hot flashes and night sweats can find relief using an FDA-approved estrogen hormone therapy called Divigel, a cool, clear gel that is applied to the upper thigh daily. It contains the plant-based estrogen hormone estradiol, the same hormone made naturally by a woman's ovaries before menopause and delivers estrogen identical to that naturally produced in the body. 2. Irritability/sleeplessness: Quality sleep is often a challenge during menopause and can contribute to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and obesity. A natural supplement with melatonin like Vitafusion Beauty Sleep promotes a good night's sleep without prescription medication. Sex and/or self-pleasure are natural ways to decrease stress and can help with the onset and quality of sleep. The oxytocin released with hugging, stimulation and orgasm can increase feelings of calm and safety, causing cortisol levels to drop, thus optimizing sleep. Orgasm releases prolactin, helping you fall asleep faster and more efficiently.

3. Painful sex: Internal vaginal dryness can be relieved for three days with hormone-free Replens Vaginal Moisturizer. Alternatively, prescription remedies like vaginal estrogen or DHEA can be used. Don't forget to incorporate a personal silicone lubricant like Replens Silky Smooth just before sex to ease penetration, increase comfort and reduce abrasion. 4. Weight gain? Eat to defeat menopause: Food is the fuel for every cell in your body, so avoid packaged and processed foods and limit sugary drinks and desserts to ensure you're optimizing energy. Stick to unprocessed whole foods as there are no hidden ingredients or calories. Your body will also appreciate fresh and/or organic produce and hormone-free meat or grass-fed beef as often as possible. Eat to Defeat Menopause: The Essential Nutrition Guide for a Healthy Midlife offers practical advice and information on how to choose and prepare meals to optimize health during menopause. 5. Hair lacking luster, less-than-glowing skin and brittle nails: Loss of estrogen leaves many women dealing with thinning hair, increased dry skin and brittle or breaking nails. Introducing biotin into your diet with a raspberry-flavored gummy like Vitafusion Gorgeous Hair, Skin & Nails can ensure you're consuming sufficient biotin and other helpful nutrients including vitamins C and E. Every woman has safe, new options, from prescription HT to those available over-the-counter, to suit her unique needs. Schedule a chat with your health provider to discuss the right hormone therapy or alternative option for your personal menopausal challenge.

These findings were presented in April at the 2018 AAN Annual Meeting in Los Angeles. "The treatment landscape for people with MS has changed drastically over the last two decades," said lead author Dr. Alexander D. Rae-Grant of Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. "We now have many disease-modifying therapies to choose from that may help treat MS by changing how the disease affects people over time by slowing the disease process." For people with MS, the new guidelines represent a shift in care from older guidelines, and while the new guidelines offer a comprehensive review of this new strategy, here are some things people with MS need to know immediately. Discussing your options with your clinician is more important than ever While the new guidelines advise introducing medicines at an earlier period in the treatment regimen for many people with MS, the importance of discussing one's individual options with a clinician has not changed. Medicines still carry risks, and the best treatment solution can vary by person. For these reasons, people with MS owe it to themselves to discuss their diseasemodifying therapy (DMT) options with their neurologist to determine which solution is right for them and chart a course for future care. In many cases this care could involve a two-pronged approach, with some medicines being used to treat MS symptoms, including muscle tightness, spasticity, fatigue, pain, memory problems, and depression or anxiety. Meanwhile other medicines - used as part of the DMT will target the disease itself, to modify it and slow the process. Playing the long game Success in this medicinal regimen depends on the person's ongoing commitment to managing the condition. Once the initial treatment plan is set in motion, people with MS should monitor their condition carefully and report to their neurologist any side effects they are experiencing that could be associated with their treatment. It is also vital for these people to have their disease activity checked regularly through MRI scans. The results of these scans will allow people with MS and their neurologist to make decisions about their treatment and make strategy and/or medicinal adjustments, as needed, in response to the data. Finally, people with MS should be aware that insurance plans may differ in coverage options for DMTs and other treatment-related medicines. In discussing DMT and medicinal options with their neurologist, people should be sure to check that the proposed regimen will be covered under their insurance plan. It is their obligation to ensure their insurance company is supporting them in their MS treatment with as much commitment as their medical team. To learn more about the new MS guideline and what it means for the future of MS treatment and care, visit AAN.com/policy-and-guidelines/guidelines.

Nutrition is important for everyone. The proper vitamins and nutrients help the body stay healthy and function well. For people with chronic conditions, the right nutrition is essential in helping to ward off potential health hazards. Depending on your state of health, some nutrients may be critical and too much of others can be toxic. For example, too much sodium can cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing heart disease or having a stroke. For people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), too much potassium can be fatal. The kidneys play a major role in maintaining potassium levels. For people with CKD, it's more difficult for the body to maintain the right levels of potassium and they are at risk of developing hyperkalemia, a condition in which someone has elevated potassium levels in their blood. Hyperkalemia is a serious condition and can pose major health risks, including irregular heartbeat. Many people don't even know that they have hyperkalemia and symptoms can be difficult to detect. According to the National Kidney Foundation, many people with high potassium have few, if any, symptoms. If symptoms do appear, they are usually mild and may include muscle weakness, numbness, tingling, nausea or other feelings. High potassium usually develops slowly over many weeks or months; however, it can also occur suddenly. You may feel heart palpitations, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea or vomiting. Sudden or severe hyperkalemia is a life-threatening condition and requires immediate medical care.

If you have CKD or other chronic conditions or diseases, it's important to take your nutrition seriously. Here are three tips to help you take control of your diet: Talk with your doctor Talk to your doctor or a member of your health care team about proper nutrition and dietary changes that might help protect your kidneys. A simple call or checkup can provide a wealth of important information. Your physician may even have you work with a nutritionist or dietitian who can guide you toward food that will help you stay healthy. Consider medications To manage a serious condition like CKD, it's likely you are already taking a variety of medications. Some medications may affect how your body processes certain nutrients, so it's important to be aware of which medications you are taking and at what dosage. For example, some medicines like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and betablockers are frequently prescribed to people with CKD and heart failure, and these can cause hyperkalemia as a side effect. If you are being treated with these medications, talk to your doctor to understand any risk you might have for hyperkalemia. Watch what you eat If you have a disease or chronic condition, being aware of what you eat is one of the most important steps you can take to ensure you get the right level of nutrients. Some people keep a food diary to track and record how certain foods make them feel. This can be a valuable resource for your health care team when reviewing your nutritional concerns. For people with hyperkalemia, it's important to eat a low-potassium diet. You can still enjoy many foods, but you may need to make adjustments or eat certain foods in moderation. For example, fruits like bananas, melons and oranges are high in potassium. Instead, eat low-potassium options such as apples, grapes or berries. Your doctor can provide you with a reference list to keep on hand as you learn more about what to eat and what to avoid. Make your kidney health a priority. Talk to your doctor to learn more about the link between nutrition and kidney health, and to design a diet and treatment plan that works for you. Understanding your particular dietary needs can help keep you and your kidneys healthy and thriving.

Self-Care Tips with Angel!

The Heat is on and Summertime is here! That means late nights and earlier mornings. After a successful and epic Kentucky Derby some of us are still recovering from, I thought it was only fair that I share some of my favorites go to tips about recovering from the post turn up. In the city known for horse races, bourbon, mint juleps and good food these tips will help you remain glowing the morning after. The key to maintaining a radiant glow and healthy skin is to Hydrate, Hydrate... and Hydrate more! Remember that water is essential, and here are three of this season must have items for a (Post Party) skincare recovery. Sunscreen is a must have (full or broad spectrum) and in my opinion, the most important part of any summer skincare routine and honestly be used 365 days a year. Sun damage is the main outside factor that causes premature aging. All sunscreen should be applied 20 minutes before exposure to the sun and every 90 mins after swimming or outdoor activities

Wear along with a tint moisturizer. • Clinique-Sun Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Body Cream ($23)- Dermatologist tested Clinique cream provides high level protection against the aging and burning effects of UVA/ UVB rays. Triggers a repair that helps prevent signs of aging, shields skin from environmental factors and gentle enough for sensitive skin. • Philosophy-Take a Deep Breath Oil Free Oxygen Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($34)-This light weight, fresh feeling moisturizer acts like a breath of fresh air to revitalize skin and help diffuse energizing oxygen as needed to inspire a healthy-looking glow.

A little about tinted moisturizers. Warmer temperature is not ideal for a full face of makeup don’t get caught in these streets melting and honestly so unattractive. Instead, replace foundation with a tinted moisturizer. Light-weight coverage keep skin hydrated while still offering a soft glow. Spot treat with a little concealer Here are a couple of my favorites

• NARS-Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($42) Lush, natural botanicals to immediately help thirsty skin stay hydrated, oil free and assists with hyperpigmentation • Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Oil Free SPF 20 ($43) Light weight, hydrating, natural semi matte finish www.cheakwoolfolk.com

Ladies as tighten, tone and detox our bodies for the summer, and the spa service I would like to recommend is the v-steam also known as a yoni steam. This is a pain free, vaginal detox known as an ancient Korean treatment that aids in soothes menstrual cramps, boosts fertility, tightens vaginal tissues, and curbs bacterial infection (yeast). The vaginal detox process last about 20-45 minutes, disrobing from the waist down and draping under a big tent. The woman sits over a steaming pot of water infused with therapeutic herbs (basil, calendula, oregano, wormwood, marshmallow root and rosemary. The v steams help dilates the blood vessels, increasing blood circulation, providing oxygen and relaxing pelvic muscles.

THE TRAVEL WARRIOR'S NUTRITION GUIDE: 5 EASY STEPS TO BE HEALTHY ON THE GO

.U.S. residents logged 1.7 billion trips for leisure purposes in 2016, according to the U.S. Travel Association, and this number will likely grow in 2018. Whether you're traveling for leisure or business, you shouldn't lose sight of nutrition. It's common to think, "Hey, I'm on vacation, so I can throw my healthy diet out the window." Wrong. Traveling can throw the body for a loop with time zone changes, shifts in sleep schedules and the availability of fast, convenient and highly processed foods. Use these five easy steps to make sure you stay healthy on the go this year. 1. Pack healthy snacks. Dining while on the go usually translates to getting a quick hunger fix that involves processed, high-fat foods. Make a conscious effort to pack healthy snacks. Apples and nut butter, pretzels and hummus and dried, no-sugar-added fruit are a few healthy options. 2. Lighten your luggage. It's all too common for travelers to try to max out the weight of their checked luggage, which often weighs in at 50 pounds. Carting around heavy luggage and bags can take a toll on the body.

www.cheakwoolfolk.com

CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

www.ckwmag.info

60

One easy way to lighten your load is to condense cumbersome toiletries. For instance, look at the prescription medications and dietary supplements you're packing. A 2018 Wakefield Research study, conducted for Vitamin Packs, found that more than half - 51 percent - of respondents tote along five or more different types of pills when they're traveling. And with age comes ailments. Baby boomers are the pill pack mules, with 64 percent taking five or more types of pills along for the ride when they travel, compared to only 35 percent of millennials who bring the same amount. The good news - you can leave dietary supplement bottles and days-of-the-week pillboxes at home. Look for personalized vitamin subscription services, like Vitamin Packs (www.vitaminpacks.com), that combine customized dietary supplements into individual daily packs that can easily tuck into your carry-on luggage. 3. Don't forget essential nutrients. The introduction of personalized nutrition has made it much easier (and lighter) to bring your vitamins and supplements with you when you travel. It may not always be convenient to grab a bright orange pepper or a bowl of fresh spinach while on the go. Therefore, your body may be craving folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin A, lutein, and just about every other phytonutrient. "We shouldn't sacrifice our nutrition simply because we're away from our kitchen," commented Elizabeth Somer, registered dietitian, author of "Eat Your Way to Happiness" and Vitamin Packs medical advisory board member. "I always pack nutritionally rich go-to snacks when I'm away from home and pack a multivitamin that delivers the essential nutrients my body needs to perform at its best." 4. Keep your blood flowing. If you're planning a U.S. cross-country flight this year, direct flights can leave you sitting for five hours or more. These long periods of sedentary travel can lead to blood clots. Before you go, check with your doctor about adding an omega-3 supplement to your diet to maintain healthy blood flow. 5. Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate. Water should be your No. 1 travel companion. Pack a reusable water bottle, so you can quickly fill up at water fountains located in many airports, train stations and bus stops. As you take to the air, road or track this year, make nutrition a top priority. Your body will thank you and it will give you the energy you need to enjoy your time wherever your travels take you.

EXAMINING THE DISSOLUTION OF THE GENERATIONAL LINES OF DIVISION. By Chea K. Woolfolk

Kentucky Derby 2018 is in the bag!

Photography: DEE JOHNSON RODNEY PITTS The Derby hats have been placing in their hat boxes and packed away, Derby posters still hang in commemoration of the year’s events and the planning committees are already focused on Kentucky Derby 2019. Many citizens of Louisville breath a sigh of exhaustion from the whirlwind of activities, visitors, events and just the general air of continuous excitement. Derby 2018 has ended, and is officially in the bag. This Derby was one of the most memorable for my hometown of Louisville Kentucky, there were many great events. For many years the Kentucky Derby has been an event that was more designed for the affluent, those who knew of wealth or came from a certain background. It was no secret that there was a line of racial divide embedded in The Kentucky Derby.

LEGENDARY ENTERTAINER SHEILA E. & VALERIE SICKLES OF MAGIC 101.3/ ALPHA MEDIA LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY MAYOR GREG FISHER ATTENDING 100 BLACK MENS ANNUAL DERBY EVENT

100 BLACK MEN ANNUAL DERBY EVENT 2018

In the early years many of the jockeys were African Americans who were overlooked for their ability to dominate this race, unlike today’s jockeys. In the past the celebrations meant African Americans celebrated one way, while others chose to celebrate another. However, over the last few years I've witnessed that line of division slowly melt Away. Now, here we are in the year 2018 and I was able to witness first-hand the diversity that's been built into the Kentucky Derby of today. First, I would like to give kudos to the Kentucky Derby Festival, they championed events that cater to all groups, all economic statuses and lifestyles. One point of pride was witnessing how inclusive the scheduled events were. It's a pleasure to see people of every ethnic background of every economic status enjoying Derby together.

Many of the events that came into what is traditionally called “black Louisville” or “black Derby” were not only very upscale and refreshing, but offered patrons an opportunity to not only experience Derby, but to network, mingle, and party within a safe environment. I also witnessed a mending of many fences. As a child born in the 1970’s in Louisville, KY I have witnessed Derby being celebrated by Caucasian citizens in a way that was welcomed, while traditional events in the African American community were not given proper respect or support. I've lived and seen the way that the Derby committee has made the black Louisville feel as if it wasn't welcomed. One of the blessings of getting older is the ability to see change, to witness the betterment of society and participate in cultural evolution. What am I’m trying to say? Well I bare witness that in 2018 the Kentucky Derby was more inclusive than it's ever been. Yes, Kentucky Derby is a time for financial gain for the city of Louisville but also for entrepreneurs. A time for party goers and patrons alike to see Louisville’s social scene in a better light. When I focus on the racial divide that was such a staple of The Kentucky Derby that it was never even discussed, I reflect on how my people created their own traditions and Derby actions. How so many families who could never afford to visit “The Track” the locals so familiarly call Churchill Downs. Instead these families would gather together in homes or local watering holes. What ensued would be a day of enjoyment and support. From bar b que to open bars, corn hole, and spades to improvised dance floors. The fun was plenty albeit different from what those in other areas of Louisville and Kentucky would experience. As I grow in to adulthood I started to see the changes of The Kentucky Derby which seem at most times on point with how society was evolving. The events hat took place to celebrate the time of Derby became less segregated and more welcoming to all. The years brought about a more inclusive attitude and an expansion of the cultural traditions. At the same time the City of Louisville begin to put more time, effort, and money into making The Derby a tourist attraction and event not to be missed. In doing so, the cities has also had its critics. Who would rather see things stay the way they were in the past. There is no progress without growing pains. As the Kentucky Derby Festival along with the many sponsors over the years worked to create events that offered enjoyment to the masses the lines of racial division began being trampled. I am not saying this was an easy transition and there were not rough patches. Of course anytime you deal with racial issues there will be storms. However, for this article I want to focus on the positive aspects and celebrate growth.

ALL IS FAIR IN LOVE AND FASHION 3RD PRE-DERBY FASHION SHOW BRUNCH ATTENDEES PHOTOS BY DEE JOHNSON PHOTOGRPAHY

The Derby is a time to celebrate Kentucky, and the city is filled with guests from all over the world. It's also a time of friendship, a time of merriment, and a time when people put aside their differences to enjoy something that the most loyal Kentuckians wait for with abated breath like a child on Christmas morning. It’s a celebration of the fastest two minutes in sports. Yet again, Louisville you have risen to the occasion and showed the world what we are made of. Muhammad Ali would’ve been proud of us once again, as we showed the world what it’s like to come from here, and to call Louisville our hometown, “ The Greatest.”

Once again Louisville was excited for the return of Arts, Beats + Lyrics and the atmosphere this event brings to The Kentucky Derby event scene. This was the second installment of the annual event and the turnout was outstanding. It has quickly become the one event that no one wants to miss. The innovative and interactive exhibition featured visual masterpieces from renowned artists such as Frank Morrison, Aniekan Udofia, and curator, Dubelyoo. The event also featured live music, including a performance from Grammy nominated emcee, Rapsody.

The 2018 Kentucky Derby list of events was intense, yet May 4th, 2018 was the night that Louisville was collectively holding its breath for. The line around the KFC Yum Center was not for the faint of heart. Even with hundreds and hundreds of party goers in line the arrival process that the AB+L team had in place resulted in swift check in and happy attendees. The event began it 7 pm yet the line started to form at 6 Pm. The buzz about AB+L was contagious. The night was filled with amazing art and the crowd could not get enough of the exhibits and artist. The Host Dres thaBeatnik kept the crowd engaged and moving. The Bartenders provided great service and made sure that Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey flowed freely. There was virtual reality exhibits and hands on fun throughout the venue. For me Art, Beats + Lyrics has become my favorite event for the Derby party scene and to make it even more appealing there is no cost of admission. While many of the parties have a cover charge or ticket price AB+L has decided to create a free event that allows everyone to enjoy The Kentucky Derby without a financial strain. That shows the power of their team, sponsorship collaboration with Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey and their love of the people.

We were blessed with outstanding weather and a stellar concert by Sheila E. on Tuesday May 1st, 2018 on the waterfront park. She started her performance with her remix of the Star Spangled Banner sprinkled with Dr. Martin Luther Kings I have a Dream Speech and Obamas “Yes We Can” Slogan. Excitement in the air was thick. By her third song, she started beating on those drums. She is my idol and one of the people who inspired me to get into drumming as a 10 year old. For her fourth song, she went ballistic with a Latin Flair. I felt so at home.

Sheila E. Is 62 and still fabulous. She said if she can jump to the music, then everyone else can too. She was a bit disappointed that the Kentucky Derby Festival did not allow the audience to come to the stage, so she took her microphone and her bodyguards and waltz right out dead smack in the middle of the crowd and sung a song. Sheila E completely caught her band, KDF and the crowd by surprise. We circled her in a peaceful fashion while blessed us with her vocals. This serenade was special. The highly surprised crowd was highly appreciative of this moment. She let us know all the hatred and killings in this world could be changed by love. She encouraged every one of us to turn to someone we did not know and tell them “I love you and respect you”. These simple words brought so much warmth, happiness and positivity into the air. Sheila E. told us “love is power”. If we collectively plant the seed of love in everyone’s heart, we could reunite this country. Sheila E. encouraged us to duplicate this positive feeling beyond the concert.

Soon after this touching experience, Sheila E. started dropping lyrics in a rap/floetry style. She really went all out her way to make us feel special. She also offered a soft tribute to The Artist, formerly known as the Prince, with his song Cherry Blossom. She even had a guitarist who mimicked the Prince Swag. At the end of her performance, she surprised us again with a creative and highly spiritual drumming session. The Sheila E. At Waterfront Jam was sponsored by CareSource, B96.5, G105.1 and Magic 101.3. Kroger’s was the overall sponsor of the entire Fest-a-Ville on the Waterfront.

I have a PSA for people who might be having “outside conversation” that has you contemplating taking a leap from your marriage into something new. Wanna hear it? Here it goes: Take heed to the doctrine of law called the “attractive nuisance” doctrine. This doctrine teaches that if a person has something on their property that is inherently dangerous but that is attractive to those who may not appreciate the danger of that object, that property owner is per se liable for any injury or death that results from exposure to that dangerous object. Therefore, it is the property owner’s responsibility to take reasonable measures to prevent access to that dangerous object by would-be trespassers. Examples would be: swimming pools, constuction sites, abandoned cars, etc.

What does this have to do with “outside conversation”? I’m glad you asked. When you are communicating or having stolen moments with someone outside your marriage, your time with them is limited and your view of them is incomplete and tainted. Therefore, like a curious child, you are not taking the time to appreciate the nuisance behind that attraction. You see a man with broad shoulders and flashy clothes and jewelry, but you don’t see that he has 2 cases pending for domestic violence and that he lives in his mama’s basement. He’s not always in long pants or doing waist up pics because it’s cool outside, he’s doing that to cover the house arrest ankle monitor on his leg. You see a woman with a $500 weave job and a body that is out of this world, but you don’t see the eviction notice on her door. You don’t know that her kids are in foster care because she can’t get her life together enough for the State to give them back to her. She didn’t uber to the club because she anticipated drinking...she caught an Uber to the club because the repo man finally caught up with her and took her car. You see the attraction...but you don’t see the nuisance and like that child who drowns because he thought he could handle a swimming pool like he handles a bathtub, you don’t appreciate the danger of the nuisance attached to your attraction UNTIL IT IS DESTROYING YOU. My pastor, Marcus Cathey, used a fishing analogy to explain how we fall prey to tricks of the enemy. The hunger inside of the fish is the desire, the worm covering the hook is the deception...and when the desire meets the deception, sin occurs, and the wages of sin is DEATH! Death to your marriage, death to your paycheck, death to a two-income household, death to having full-time access to your kids...death to life as you now know it. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

So, here’s some food for thought: the reason that the grass you are looking at from your side of the fence looks so green is because it’s AstroTurf. Fake grass stays green with little or no effort. But I would submit to you that the relationship you have built with your spouse is REAL grass. If you would take the time to nurture it, water it, fertilize it and keep your truck tires off it, it will go back to being as beautiful as it was when you saw it the first time. That “outside conversation” feels good because it’s a distraction from your real life. That’s why people “fall in love” with their side piece. There’s no responsibility there. You’re not paying bills with them. You aren’t raising children with them. You’ve never seen them sick or upset. They’ve never seen you sick or upset. Of course, it’s pleasant...there’s no time for anything else and you both get to be whoever you want to be. There’s no reality there. So, the moral of the story is: don’t be deceived. Cherish those who love you and are committed to you and who you have built a REAL life with. Go sit down somewhere before you end up losing the 80% that you NEED chasing after the 20% that you WANT and end up flunking out of life. Anyway, this has been a public service announcement. #thatisall #gayspsa #AstroTurf #attractivenuisance #gaypolkpayton #gaypolkpaytonwhite

The Support Tour 2018 Special Report: The Kentucky Derby 2018 Derby Through Our Eyes, a Racial Epiphany

A visual piece by Chea K. Woolfolk with photography talents Dee Johnson & Rodney Pitts www.cheakwoolfolk.com

Let’s take a visual journey of some of the amazing events we covered. The Kentucky 2018 at times seemed like one giant social event with mint julips and big hats. However, much to our enjoyment each event was just another glimpse into the racial growth that’s occurred over the years. CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

This year we had the pleasure of attending the DBZ’s Pre-Derby Vibin’ @Virtue The event featured Louisville’s upscale, urban professionals preparing for another exciting week of Derby activities. This Derby event had a great crowd and scrumptious food prepared by the culinary masters of Frederick’s. While the hospitality is provided by the awesome staff of Virtue. With such a pairing the food and drinks were enough to keep the crowd smiling and grooving. However, DBZ did not stop there they had none other than the phenomenal DJ Samosa working the turntables and ensuring that everyone had a good time. If you would like to know more about DBZ and the plethora of upcoming events, please join the Facebook group “Da Basement Zone” to stay in the know. Their crowd tends to lean towards the grown and sexy with an easygoing atmosphere that you do not find at every venue. It has been such a success that the Vibin’ @Virtue series will now be a monthly event that will be held at Virtue until the fall season. The goal? To continue providing networking for Louisville’s upscale, urban professionals and entrepreneurs, as well as exposure for the many talented people in our city. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

Two of the event we covered that left a lasting impression was the 19th Annual Pre-Derby Bash, this night time bash catered to the 30 years and over crowd. When asked how many people were able to enjoy this event Anthony “Gip” Palm the bashes organizer and host stated that over 830 Tastemakers and trendsetters attended. Also hosted by Gip Palm Productions, Urban Connetq and DJ ZNYCE was the 2nd Annual Oaks Day Party sponsored by Jeff Wyler Nissan. With over 300 Derby party goers in attendance this day party was very impressive. An easy-going atmosphere that allow for some recovery from the many previous Derby events, yet the DJ’s had the mood right for enjoyment. We were not disappointed, and neither was the crowd.

FB -Gip Palm Productions IG- Palm_Gip

One constant trend I’ve noticed regarding Gip Palm Production’s has made it their practice to insure a safe and conducive atmosphere for all their events, This Derby bash was no exception and with over 830 people to attend to “Gip” and his team set the bar high. Hospitality is southern yet refreshing, the staff is always attentive, and the crowd is always priority.

There are just points and times in your life when you know that a change has got to come. If change is inevitable then why do, we fight it so? We are the only one who can answer that question. We have been told all our lives that we should never quit or give up. I am taking an opposition and saying that there are some things that we need and should quit doing immediately. These things can and will help us to live a more fulfilled and abundant life. Who do you know that doesn’t want to live their best life?

PLEASE QUIT For this articles sake I have narrowed down the top ten things I thinks we should cease to do. I have a total of twenty and you can check out my blog for the rest by going to the website listed at the bottom of this article. I truly hope that this will help someone and once you finally “QUIT” you will thank me later and will be so glad that you did. Be blessed and know that you can do it!

1. Quit existing- Look and live...going from paycheck to paycheck is not fun and just wishing on a star or dream doesn’t make it so. Life requires action and when you put life and action together you start living. You are the captain of your ship so the way you think, the way you treat people, and the way you live is all up to you. It all goes together. Go ahead and plan that trip or take that class that you always wanted to. I believe that once you start putting things in motion the universe has a way of answering you. When you are walking in your purpose things just start aligning.

BY KOREA HOWARD

2. Quit apologizing- For wanting better and more out of life. Don’t let others make you feel sorry for doing or being well. You have worked hard for everything that you have, and you deserve to splurge a little if you choose. You are worthy and deserve all that life has to offer. Live your life unapologetically! 3. Quit self-pity- Us: “Excuse me waiter but can I get a table for a party of one?” Waiter: “Sure no problem and what name shall I put it under?” Us: “The name is Pity!” How many times have we done this to ourselves. Life isn’t always fair, but I am a firm believer that things can turn itself around. There isn’t anything wrong with being emotional about a situation because we are human, but pity is when we stay at the table longer than we need to. If we aren’t careful pity will invite itself to your house and can sometimes be hard to get rid of. Be honest with yourself and go through the grieving process just don’t allow yourself to live there. 4. Quit toxicity- People, places, or things that are not productive in your life must go. This is should be without question or hesitation. Toxic things will never be any good to your well-being. No matter how much you hope and wish sometimes the writing is on the wall. True colors will always reveal themselves. Negativity is a nasty and ugly disease and if not treated properly it will eat you alive. 5. Quit talking- It is not imperative or always relative that everyone know your every move or your every thought. Social media is a great outlet, but it shouldn’t be the first or only outlet by which your voice can be heard. I love silence...it is my best friend and it has been in the silent and solemn moments that I have gotten some great ideas, written some of my best work, and been able to really enjoy the moment. When you move in silence amazing things can happen. 6. Quit living in the past- Would haves, should haves, and could haves can leave you in a desolate state. There is absolutely nothing you can do about your past. You can’t even control the thoughts or words you just had a few minutes ago. The past can be our greatest teacher if we choose to learn from it. Rinses and repeats often end up getting us the same results as before. We can’t change or control the past but we most certainly can control our present and future.

7. Quit making excuses- We often talk ourselves out of doing things that we know will and can help us. We usually make up a reason why we are not able to do something. I believe that we won’t do something not because we can’t but because we just simply don’t want to. It might be a cliché, but it is so true that we can do anything we set our minds to. Once it is in our minds it then seeps into our hearts and then eventually we act upon it. A heart’s desire will at some point become action. 8. Quit saying “YES”- Learn to say NO... NOPE...NAW...and if need be HELL TO THE NO NAW! You are not a door mat, so it is not okay to let people walk all over you. Generosity is free, but it doesn’t always have to be up for grabs. You can be kind to everyone but not everyone should have your kindness. Respect is earned and never given. Sometimes a no is needed for safety and sanity’s sake. 9. Quit seeking approval- I must admit that this was one of the hardest things for me to quit. It is always nice when someone compliments you or gives you a pat on the back for a job well done but when that need for approval becomes constant it easily turns into an obsession. You will find yourself constantly trying too hard and then over achieving unnecessarily and you will lose sight of yourself in the process. You will feel the need to oblige people all the time. That becomes very tiresome and exhausting. Be yourself and be careful to not seek the praise of man. 10. Quit being so serious- Life is a serious and real matter and we get it. Loosen up and live a little. Unwind and let life find you sometimes. Smile our laugh and just enjoy the moment. Go see a comedy show or movie. Tell a joke or two no matter how corny they may be. Life is always going to be here, and you only get one chance at it. Live...love...laugh!

Look Good, Feel Better! Positive self image.

There are many opinions regarding how to improve self image but ultimately confidence is the key to a positive self image. We must discover our worth and it is our individual responsibility as part of the human community to build, encourage, and uplift one another. I have found through my years of experience in the beauty industry, we do not truly transform people externally without impacting them internally.

When we share goodness and kindness while providing our services, people’s attitudes and at times, lives are transformed. Be a Blessing today by touching someone’s life with love and kindness. Sondra Wilkerson, Manicurist Big City Styles 312 W Chestnut Street Louisville, KY 40202 502-584-2489

So, you say you want to learn to throw a party worthy of the Kardashians? Well, admittedly, that’s asking a lot. After all, one of their more recent bashes featured synchronized swimmers – it was a poolside event – surprising guests with a routine straight out of a 1950s Esther Williams movie. But take heart. The Kardashian sisters – who seemingly never run out of mindblowing ideas – didn’t think that party highlight up themselves. Linnea Johansson, author of “Perfect Parties: Tips and Advice from a New York Planner,” did. And even if you don’t have money to throw around, she says to apply the “same principle” of doing “something unexpected” at your event. For more on how that translates into actionable advice, read on. • Fun in finger foods. Out: sit-down dinners. In: small plates and finger foods like the very trendy Russian-style tapas called zakuski. As far back as Tolstoy’s 19th century, the custom was to individually plate an array of what literally translates into “small bites” and eat them in a set order. The key to really pulling it off, though, says Johansson, a noted chef herself, is to pair the zakuski with an authentic premium Russian vodka, which to her means Russian Standard Vodka. “It’s the number-one premium vodka in Russia, and it’s perfect for drinking neat or in cocktails, and excellent paired with food.” • Creativity shines in centerpieces. Why spend a fortune on store-bought white roses for your dinner table? Pick some pine cones and holly leaves while out strolling, say, throw in a few cinnamon sticks and clove-laden oranges, and you’ve got yourself a masterpiece so delicious-smelling that it doubles as an air freshener.

• Toast to great times. Russians certainly know how to drink vodka, and toasting is the perfect invitation to celebrate and party. The traditional way of toasting in Russia is continuous and lasts throughout the night, which can only lead to a great time! • House cocktail to invite taste buds. Even if your guests’ tastes lean more toward chips-anddip than zakuski, Johansson says that vodka – used as the base for a custom cocktail like the one below – is “a definite crowd pleaser.”

MAPLE & FIG COCKTAIL 2 ounces Russian Standard Vodka 1/2-ounce maple syrup 2 ounces lemon juice 1-ounce ginger beer 1 fresh fig

Add a little bit of body text

Muddle the fruit and syrup in a shaker, add the lemon juice and Russian Standard Vodka. Add ice and shake well. Strain into a glass and top with ginger beer. Garnish with a slice of fig. For more information, visit facebook.com/RussianStandardVodkaUSA. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

In a world of constant upheaval, cognac makers have always taken pride in how their centuries-old techniques never change. So, it’s big news that these days the brandy – which originates in the Cognac region of France – is enjoying quite the renaissance among bar and restaurant patrons of all age groups, cultures and regions.

www.ckwmag.info

165

“Cognac is really gaining ground with the recent cocktail renaissance hitting bars across the country,” says Todd Appel, a master barman in Chicago, Ill. “It is such a timeless and elegant spirit – not to mention, it appeals to such a wide range of tastes, such as bourbon and scotch drinkers, whether ordered neat, on the rocks or in cocktails – that bartenders are turning to it more and more often.” Here are a few things to keep in mind when ordering cognac: • There are three grades of cognac: Very Special (V.S.), which is aged two years; Very Superior Old Pale (V.S.O.P.), which is aged four years; and Extra Old (X.O.), which is aged six years. • The younger varieties (V.S. & V.S.O.P.) work better in cocktails. Older, more mature cognacs are better consumed neat. Why the resurgence in this beverage’s appeal? Well, according to spirit aficionados and experts, it’s in large part thanks to the emergence of new ranges of the amber liquid that defy the drink’s image as a spirit best enjoyed in the winter months. In fact, not only are two of the latest stand-outs – the aromatic CAMUS Elegance V.S. and V.S.O.P. – perfect year-round given their distinctive smoothness, aroma and overall elegance, but they’re ideal for making cocktails taste like nothing you’ve ever experienced before.

dDAIRY-FREE NUTRITION TIPS FOR THE 65 PERCENT OF PEOPLE WHO ARE LACTOSE INTOLERANT BPT www.cheakwoolfolk.com

173

Do you love dairy, but usually regret eating it shortly after it's gone? That sour stomach after drinking milk, munching on cheese or eating ice cream is sometimes called a dairy hangover. The culprit: lactose. Lactose is a milk sugar. Infants have special enzymes that break down lactose. As people grow, the ability to digest milk typically decreases because they lose these enzymes. In fact, approximately 65 percent of the human population has a reduced ability to digest milk and foods made with milk after infancy, according to the National Institutes of Health. Symptoms of lactose intolerance If you've had the following symptoms after eating dairy products, you may be lactose intolerant: * Gas * Bloating * Abdominal cramping * Diarrhea * Nausea If you or your children have these symptoms, there are many things you can do. First, talk with your doctor or nutritionist about your health concerns. Second, consider keeping a food journal of what you eat and how it makes you feel. This can help uncover trends and important connections. Finally, research high-quality dairy-free alternatives for you and your family's diet. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

FTips for going dairy-free Adjusting to a low-dairy or dairy-free diet might seem overwhelming. There are many dairy-free milk options on the market, but it's important to be a conscientious shopper. Whereas most dairy-free beverages use non-food flavorings and additives like carrageenan, all plant-based Mooala products are made with real ingredients, and are USDAcertified organic, Kosher and GMO-free. Every Mooala product has 10 or fewer grams of sugar per serving and it can be found in approximately 1,500 retailers throughout the U.S. Try Original Almondmilk and Vanilla Bean Almondmilk for a creamy treat that tastes surprisingly similar to milk. Nut-free and soy-free Original Bananamilk is also available to the estimated 5 million Americans who are allergic to tree nuts. Another concern for people cutting dairy is vitamin D and calcium deficiencies. Fortunately, there are foods you can add to your diet so you get these important nutrients. Egg yolks, canned tuna and almonds are good sources of vitamin D. Spinach, kale, collards and white beans are good sources of calcium. What's more, many common grocery store items are fortified with calcium and vitamin D as well, such as breakfast cereals and orange juice. Just look at the label for more information. There are plentiful options to eat well and go dairy-free if you have lactose sensitivities. Have fun exploring new recipes that support your nutritional needs. One that features many of these powerful dairy-free foods is a tasty smoothie you can whip up in just minutes: Grapefruit Bananamilk Smoothie Ingredients: 1 deseeded grapefruit 1 sweet apple 2 handfuls of spinach 1 frozen banana 1 handful of ice 1/2 cup Mooala's Original Bananamilk Dash of fresh ginger Directions: Place ingredients in blender, then puree until you've reached your desired consistency.

GUT CHECK: EAT THE RIGHT KINDS OF WHOLE GRAINS WITH THE RIGHT KINDS OF FIBER TO CUT CANCER RISK www.ckwmag.info

177

Can cutting back on whole grains be bad for your gut and deadly to your health? Though some popular diets promote the elimination of grains, a recent report from the American Institute for Cancer Research suggests this may be ill-advised.

Researchers say 47 percent of colorectal cancers can be prevented with lifestyle changes, such as adding whole grains to your diet and exercising more. Eating three daily servings of whole grains reduces the risk of colorectal cancer by 17 percent, the report says. But the link between whole grains and cancer may be confusing. After all, the major benefit of whole grains is fiber, and fiber is fiber, right? Here's the paradox about fiber: Americans have increased their consumption of fiber, including whole grains. In spite of that, bowel cancer is still one the most common types of cancer. Not all fiber is alike. Understanding how whole grains and their fiber types go to work in the gut may hold the key to reducing the risk of colorectal cancer. A new kind of super-grain First, we turn to the humble barley grain. It may be on the verge of a big moment. Australian researchers spent 30 years breeding a variety of barley that contains more of the properties believed to reduce colon cancer. The result is a so-called super-grain called BARLEYmax.

www.cheakwoolfolk.com

ContributdCKW-The by Chea BPT K. Woolfolk Magazine

www.ckwmag.info What's special about BARLEYmax? This non-GMO grain has twice the fiber as most other whole 178 grains, including wheat. It's also chock-full of a unique type of fiber called resistant starch. Scientists believe resistant starch plays an important role in keeping the gut environment healthy. BARLEYmax has four times as much resistant starch as wheat and oats, and scientists believe it's this resistant starch that may be the key link to fighting colorectal cancer.

What do resistant starches do? Why did the Australian researchers want to develop a grain that was high in resistant starches? Dr. David Topping, who headed the research team, points to previous research showing the link between diet and colorectal cancer. Africans have a lower fiber intake compared to Americans and Australians, yet their bowel cancer rates are much lower, he reports. On the surface, this appears to diminish the role of fiber. Here's the kicker: The African diet is much higher in resistant starches and fermentable fibers than American and Australian diets. According to Topping, that highlights the key determinant of better bowel health and fighting cancer is that we eat enough of the right fiber types, from whole grain sources, rather than to focus only on the amount of fiber we eat. How do resistant starches work? We've all heard about how important it is to make sure the gut is inhabited by the right kinds of bacteria. But it's not as simple as taking a probiotic supplement or eating yogurt for breakfast. Gut bacteria need food to thrive, and that's where resistant starches come in. In the gut, resistant starches are a food source for healthy gut bacteria, and these bacteria keep the gut environment healthy. When diets are low in resistant starches, it creates a "hungry gut bacteria population." But increasing the availability of fermentable fiber-rich whole grains that feed the gut microbiota can potentially make us healthier. Good sources of good fiber It's exciting to hear that boosting your intake of resistant starches can have such a profound effect on your well-being and health. Getting the right foods that "feed" your gut has been tricky because, frankly, many are not appealing to American tastes. Green bananas are a prime example. Although resistant starches are abundant in foods like cooked and cooled potatoes, barley and oats, these have to be eaten cold to get the full benefits, because these starches break down when heated. Australian natural foods company Freedom Foods is the first breakfast manufacturer to bring the unique BARLEYmax grain to the U.S. under their Barley+ line of Toasted Mueslis and nutritional bars. The format, which is much closer to American-style granola but without all the sugar, will provide Americans with a much more accessible way to access resistant starch than some of the more obscure sources currently available. Barley+ Toasted Muesli and Barley+ Snack Bars are now available at grocers and other retailers. To learn more about the mueslis and snacks, visit freedomfoodsus.com. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

5 ESSENTIALS TO GET YOUR BACKYARD PARTY-READY The warm, summery weather is a golden opportunity to take your get-together outside. Whatever the occasion, take advantage of the sun and extra space, and let these tips help you plan and get your outdoor space ready for your guests. 1. Cluster the conversation spots When planning your backyard layout, think beyond the patio table, and provide more than enough seating for all. Arrange sofas and chairs into conversation clusters to keep people outside and enjoying each other's company. It's also a good idea to provide coffee tables, side tables and other spaces where people can set their drinks and snacks. Don't be afraid to borrow pieces from a friend or neighbor to make the party set complete. 2. Don't forget the right lighting Consider the time of day of your gathering and what that means for your lighting situation. Intense late-day sun glare is unpleasant for all, but a few strategically placed patio plants can make a huge difference (and make the space feel more intimate). For the post-sundown festivities, light up the party zone with holiday lights by stringing them along deck rails, or zig-zagging them overhead. Add a fire pit, and if it's chilly, keep an extra stash of throw blankets and jackets and you'll have a cozy, well-lit space for those late-night talks. 3. Keep flying invaders at bay No one likes it when uninvited guests like flying, biting insects show up. Bottles of insect repellent in a conspicuous place are a good bet on buggy nights, but keep these (and the spraying area) well away from the food. For a chemical-free alternative, setting out a fan or two on a low setting can stir up enough of a breeze to keep the pests away.

4. Get your game on For the ultimate crowd mixer and crowd pleaser, keep a few fun and easy yard games on hand. Dust off the old bocce ball set. Or, with a few simple materials from your local hardware store, you can create and customize DIY versions of your favorites, including bean-bag toss, ring toss or even target shooting with water guns. 5. Keep the snacks simple and stress free The secret to a good party is not stressing over every detail of the dĂŠcor and the same goes for the food. An array of delicious but simple snacks are more than enough to get the party started. Soft pretzels are always a party favorite, but did you know that most people - 69 percent of them, to be exact - prefer to eat their soft pretzels dipped? Another 28 percent prefer cheese toppings above all the others. For the perfect snack to spice up the festivities, include a batch of Superpretzel Parmesan Garlic Bites or Superpretzel Everything Pretzel Bites (see recipes below). Parmesan Garlic Bites Ingredients: 9-12 Superpretzel Soft Pretzel Bites 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons wet minced garlic 2 tablespoons dry parsley 2 tablespoons pretzel salt 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese Directions: In a bowl, combine the extra virgin olive oil, garlic, pretzel salt, parsley and cheese and set aside. Deep fry the pretzel bites in your favorite cooking oil at 360 degrees F for about 2 minutes. When done, dredge the pretzel bites into the oil and cheese mixture. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.

Everything Pretzel Bites Ingredients: 20 Superpretzel Soft Pretzel Bites Everything bagel seasoning Melted butter Optional: whipped cream cheese (for dipping)

Directions: Prepare soft pretzel bites according to instructions on the box. Lightly coat soft pretzel bites with melted butter. Season soft pretzel bites with everything bagel seasoning and soft pretzel salt. Bake in 350 degree F oven until golden brown. Serve with whipped cream cheese.

IF YOU’RE STUCK AT SEA, THERE’S AN APP FOR THATb !%b

(NewsUSA) – No one out enjoying time on a boat wants to think about breaking down and needing a tow, but a little preparation can make a big difference. According to the Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), the number-one reason for a slow or delayed towing company response is the considerable time it sometimes takes for the towboat captain to seek and find the disabled recreational boat on the water. Unlike drivers on a road or highway, many boaters are simply unsure of their exact location. However, the proliferation of cell phones and improvements in cell service over the last decade means that most anyone can use a phone to pinpoint their location and reach a dispatch center. A phone app, such as the one developed by BoatUS, allows boat owners to pre-program information about their boat. When they use the app to call for help with a dead battery or a tow home, the call goes to the dispatch center and immediately provides the boat’s details along with the latitude, longitude, and boater’s emergency contact information to the dispatcher, speeding a response.

The free app from BoatUS, available at BoatUS.com/app, also provides information about tides, weather, and wind. Boaters without the app can use their phones to call the BoatUS 24/7 Dispatch Center at 1-800-3914869.Boat owners can also be proactive and save money by signing up for an on-water towing plan at the start of the season. For example, an annual Unlimited Towing Membership plan from BoatUS starts at $72/year for freshwater and $149 for saltwater. In addition to having a towing service, boaters should be prepared to keep themselves and any passengers safe if their boat is disabled. Key tips to keep in mind include: - Be safe. In life-threatening emergencies, call 911 immediately or use VHF radio channel 16. Know the location of your boat’s safety gear and first aid kit. - Be leak-savvy. If you run aground, immediately look for water intrusion and provide a life jacket for each passenger not already wearing one. - Be seen. For safety and visibility in the dark, be sure all your boat’s navigation and anchor lights are working.

3 keys to lower your golf scores Contributed by BPT

This is the best time of the year. A full season of golf awaits, and you want to get out and play.

Making this your best season yet means starting the year off on the right foot. But to do that, you need more than just practice and coaching. You need the right gear. Research done by Golf Magazine showed that golfers who used custom-fit clubs gained 22 yards off the tee, 15 yards with their irons and lowered their scores by an average of 3 strokes per round. To lower your scores, here are three tips to find the perfect custom-fit clubs. 1. Find the ideal shaft The choices in shafts extend far beyond steel and graphite. It's a matter of flex and it can mean something different for every manufacturer. Flex is significantly impacted by torque, one of the most misunderstood shaft specifications. Higher torque shafts are better for smoother, slower swingers. Lower torque is better for players that swing aggressively. Club Champion, for example, starts all fittings by looking at the shaft to identify not just the proper shaft flex but also the proper weight. To do this, they use a unique coupling system that allows you to hit any of 35,000 head and shaft combinations. The result is a combination that addresses your unique problems and fixes them. 2. Match the correct clubhead There are many clubhead options. Each brand or model has its own distinctive characteristics that affect launch angle, spin rate and ball speed. To buy a driver that has the right launch, spin and forgiveness for your swing, be sure to use a launch monitor and look for the highest smash factor, ball speed and spin that generates the greatest distance. It's also important to ensure that the clubhead you select is the perfect match for your ideal shaft. Iron heads are more complex. Design features like offset, non-offset, blade or cavity back impact ease of playability and whether you hit a draw or fade or hit it high or low. Custom fitting will uncover your best options.

3. Buy the right swingweight Swingweight is the weight distribution of the club or how your driver feels when you're swinging. With widely variable shaft, grip and clubhead weighting, swingweight is more important than ever. It affects how you swing the club and ultimately how you deliver it at impact. A heavier swingweight, for example, will make a shaft play looser; a lighter swingweight will make it play stiffer. The most important thing to remember is you should be matching clubs within a set. If your clubs aren't matched properly, it will impact your game. Take steps to improve your game today Practice and lessons are important, but you need the right gear in your hands. Custom-fit clubs can help you hit the ball farther and straighter and ultimately lower your scores. Isn't that what golf is all about? Top instructor David Leadbetter concludes, "It never ceases to amaze me that golfers buy clubs off the shelf and assume they're right for them. Whether you're a great golfer or a casual one, getting a custom club fitting is one of the quickest ways to improve your game. Lessons are critical but if you're fighting your equipment, you can only progress so far." With thousands of options on the market, it's nearly impossible for a golfer to find equipment that performs best for them without professional help. Find a skilled fitter with a launch monitor to show you how to maximize your swing to its fullest potential. 5 essential planning tips to make your outdoor wedding perfect BPT There's so much to love about an outdoor wedding. Whether it's set on the beach, at a winery or even in the backyard of a family member, pledging your eternal commitment to your partner in beautiful natural surroundings makes the day extra memorable. If you're thinking of holding the big day in the great outdoors, you're in good company. Over the past decade, outdoor ceremonies are on the rise: 52 percent of couples tied the knot in an outdoor ceremony in 2017, compared to 29 percent in 2009, according to the TheKnot.com's 2017 Real Weddings Study. Couples are also shying away from churches, hotels and banquet halls as settings for the ceremony receptions and opting instead for less conventional sites, such as rooftop event spaces, historic homes, wineries and parks. Unlike the traditional venues, an outdoor ceremony and reception has its own set of considerations when it comes to planning. These practical tips will get you started in building the outdoor wedding of your dreams. * Sketch out the itinerary early: Before you sign the contract with your chosen venue, discuss in detail your vision with the coordinator, and before you leave, be perfectly clear on what's permissible and what's off-limits. If you're envisioning dancing the night away under the stars, you don't want to find out three weeks before the big day that the venue has restrictions on equipment and noise. Before you sign any contract, have your itinerary ready and discuss it from start to finish.

* Plan your equipment needs: One thing to know about holding a wedding in a less conventional spot is venues can vary wildly on what they can provide for you in terms of supplies and equipment. Take time to walk through the entire event so you're clear on what you may need to supply yourself. Even if a venue lacks essentials like power outlets and bathroom stalls, don't give up. There are affordable solutions out there to help you upgrade the space to a fully functional venue. Your local rental store, for example, is an essential stop for anyone planning a wedding. In addition to all the wedding gear you could need, from decorations to seating, they also have lots of other equipment and ideas to help you plan the perfect outdoor event. * Always have a Plan B: It's impossible to predict what the weather will bring for an outdoor wedding, which can add uncertainty. But you can reduce the stress by planning for the worst conditions. Is hot and humid weather a possibility? How about a thunderstorm? A deposit on a rented air-conditioned tent and a set of misting fans can be a smart move. You may not end up needing these, but your peace of mind will be worth every penny. * Set up a kids' station: Many outdoor reception spaces have a built-in advantage for hosting pint-sized guests: There's more space for them to stretch their legs and be kids without disrupting other guests. Create a kid-friendly corner featuring games, activities or even a rented inflatable bounce house that lets kids be active and let off some steam. They'll be thrilled (and so will their parents). * Encourage exploration: If the big event is held in a public place, help your guests fully appreciate the experience. Does the park have a hiking path that leads to a beautiful waterfall? Have maps printed and leave out a stack for those who decide to take a little break. Are you getting married in a beautiful garden at a historic mansion? Ask the venue if you can take extra brochures to offer the guests, or set aside time for special guided tours. This is a sure way to show consideration for your guests and make the day memorable. When the pieces fall into place, planning and hosting an outdoor wedding is a beautiful way to begin your lives together. 12 Signs You Might Be Dating a Psychopath

by Divine Akorli

If your partner is showing any of these signs, it's time to run. When people think of a psychopath they naturally think of people like Christian Bale's character in American Psycho or the guy Anthony Hopkins played in Silence of the Lambs; the kind of person who goes on psychotic murdering sprees; when in fact, the guy we share a bed with every night could possess some of the same psychotic traits... Have you ever felt like you were walking on eggshells? Do you feel like your significant other can be a little too charming? The signs may be there, you just need to know what they are. It’s vital to get out of a toxic relationship with a psychopath. I have compiled a list of the 12 signs to look for if you think you might be dating a psychopath.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde It seems like your partner is two completely different people; they can change in a split second for no reason. Acting one way with you but a different way when around your family and friends. When you first began dating, they were charming, sincere, everything seemed perfect, and they would say everything you'd want to hear. This is because they wanted you to believe in them when they were just setting their traps. Psychopaths are experts at blending into whatever crowd they're around, like a chameleon.

You Feel Like You're Going Crazy Psychopaths are the masters of manipulation. They have a way of turning everything around on you. You start to think you are going crazy; you might start to become paranoid about things like what kind of clothes you wear, what you say, have said or if people are talking about you. You start to have little battles with yourself in your head, overreact, or start to second-guess yourself. If you begin to question who you are and your values, you might be dating a psychopath. They like to confuse their partners and make it near impossible to have a logical argument.

You Feel Like You Have No Voice When you talk to your partner you feel like you are never heard, they just don't listen. It's like you are talking to a brick wall, and your words are often taken out of context or used against you. If you said you would like to watch a romantic movie, your partner would try to convince you that you are silly for liking that type of movie, or if you told him you wanted to go out for dinner, your partner would try to make sure you do something they'd want to do instead. You feel completely ignored.

They Lie A Lot They lie about almost everything they do! This can include where they have been, who they were with, why they were there, and the like. Psychopaths will even lie to get you into a relationship with them by telling you they like and want the same things as you. But, they don't like or want the same things as you at all. The only thing on their mind is the need to have control over you. A psychopath will lie to get what they want.

You Feel Isolated and Alone You feel like you are walking on eggshells; the smallest things will make your partner lose their temper. If your friends ask you to come over or if your family asks you out to dinner, you're scared to tell your partner for fear of their reaction. Your partner wants to know who you are friends with, making you feel guilty about spending time with them, and eventually you slowly start to spend less time with your friends until you feel like your partner is the only person left in your life.

They learn about your vulnerabilities and weaknesses, so they know where and how they can hurt you and cause you more pain. They make you feel alone, confused, scared, embarrassed, or worthless until you no longer have any confidence left in you. All of this is so they can make you feel isolated and lose all your support, giving them more power and control.

They Feel No Guilt or Remorse Your partner may hurt you, physically or verbally. Even by their actions like cheating, they promise that it was a onetime thing and will never happen again. But no matter what, it always seems to happen again and again. This is their way of manipulating you. The only thing they are sorry about is being caught. They have no remorse for their actions and they will manage to blame you for what they've done and make you feel bad for saying anything at all. They do not respect your feelings and what you need in a relationship.

They Make You Feel Sorry for Them They tell you all about their troubles; they were abused, from a broken home, wasn't loved as a child, has an illness, or has a psycho ex; always playing the victim. They don't feel good about themselves, they feel abandoned and people always leave them. They will even make up stories or embellish them. Their aim is to get you to sympathize and feel sorry for them. The reason they do this is to manipulate you in not leaving them despite their treatment and behavior towards you.

They Have a Sense of Entitlement When your partner does something nice for you, they feel entitled to praise or a reward, like a little child or puppy. If you do not reward or praise them they feel it's their entitlement to hurt, you. If they have been hurt or dismissed in any way they feel it's their right to retaliate. Do not feel that you need to follow them around praising them all the time. That is not normal for a relationship. It is a sign that they are trying to control how you feel about them always.

They're Always the Life of the Party They love to be the center of attention all the time. They're attractive, funny, have a relaxed attitude, they can be charming, charismatic, and tend to make people feel special about themselves. They think and act like they're the bees’ knees, the coolest, smartest person alive, and try to make everyone aware of it. This eventually turns into arrogance. They will tell you how amazing they are and tell you how "lucky you are to be with them." Don’t fall for this trap! Can you see through the act?

They Know What You are Doing at All Times Do you feel like you partner is spying on you? Do they get mad if you don't answer a call from them or if you come home later than planned? Do they get jealous if they see you talking to someone of the opposite sex? And then accuse you of cheating? Despite all this, your partner can do whatever they want, when they want to do it and if you feel like you aren't allowed to question them, they have control over you.

Things Don't Always Seem to Add Up

When your partner tells you a story, some of the things they talk about never seem to add up; you don't feel like they are being totally honest with you or telling you the whole story. If you say something they become angry with you. You begin to do everything they say but they still find fault with you. You start to believe their lies and when, in their eyes, you do something wrong they punish you. If they cheat on you, they make you believe it's your fault for being "inadequate". If you catch them in a lie, they'll just spit out another one to cover the last lie up.

Your Partner Hurts Animals A normal person treats people and animals with kindness and respect, regardless of their status. Has your partner hurt your cat or dog? Maybe they've kicked at your pet or threatened an animal? Do they show a dislike for animals in general? If so, it can be a red sign that they have some dark and disturbing thoughts. This is not normal behavior and is indicative of a mental issue. Protect your animals if you are afraid your significant other could do further damage.

Know if You Need to Leave If your significant other is showing these signs it is a huge red flag. You will want to find a way to remain safe and secure while you leave the relationship. You deserve someone who loves you and treats you with respect. Don’t settle for someone like this!

For many Americans, moving households represents a fresh start and a chance to improve quality of life. Last year, some 39.4 million Americans changed residences, thanks in part to better affordability in the housing market. That doesn't mean, however, that everyone's moving process was friction-free. The logistical coordination and the physical work involved with DIY packing and loading can be a major chore in the best of circumstances. And that's doubly true for baby boomers who are downsizing or moving to new communities, yet challenged by the physically grueling aspects of a DIY move. Fortunately, forming a plan that troubleshoots the most common challenges can help enormously. Consider how these tips could keep your next move smooth and free of unnecessary stress.

Article contributed by: BPT

1. Protect your treasures: Avoid the heartbreak of damaged belongings by stocking up on bubble wrap and other efficient packing materials. You also could optimize household items such as towels, blankets and coats. 2. Stagger your packing: Pack too early and you may need items you've stashed away; pack too late and you may be crunched for time. Start with non-essentials and out-of-season belongings a few weeks before moving day, sorting discards as you go. Save necessities for the last 48 hours. 3. Label, label, label: This may seem unnecessary while you're packing, but will save you time and frustration upon arrival when you're desperately looking for your essentials. It also allows you to immediately sort boxes by room and store items that are infrequently needed. 4. Secure transportation early: Instead of procrastinating and missing out on the truck you need, hop on your smartphone at least two weeks ahead to easily reserve a vehicle at PenskeTruckRental.com. 5. Right-size your truck: Rather than guessing what size moving vehicle you'll need, plan on about 150 cubic feet of truck space for each fully furnished room in your home. That means a move from an apartment might necessitate a 12-foot truck offering 450 cubic feet, while a move from a house might require a 26-foot truck offering 1,400 feet. 6. Recruit help: The packing and transporting may sound easy until you try to do it all yourself. This is the time to call in favors or perhaps pay some teens to help with the lifting and hauling. 7. Pack your truck strategically: Optimize your space by positioning your furniture and other large, heavy items in the back of your vehicle before proceeding with lighter items. That optimizes the vehicle's power and allows you to fit smaller items into smaller spaces. 8. Follow ergonomics: The last thing you need is to injure your back through haphazard movement during the loading process. Stretch beforehand, avoid twisting your torso as you load and remember to lift with your legs by crouching rather than bending from the waist. 9. Strategize your route: Map out the way ahead of time, review weather forecasts, avoid rush hour and leave yourself plenty of time for breaks, refueling and unloading. 10. Drive like a pro: Many people are unfamiliar with the difference between driving a car and a big truck. Read all instructions provided and understand how to drive differently to remain safe (and legal). Regardless of your age, a DIY moving process can be efficient and pain-free when you organize the details ahead of time. Talk to Penske Truck Rental for more suggestions on making that happen.

Consider a new way to see the world: The benefits of group travel BPT

Many people long to see another part of the world but are reluctant to travel on their own or take on the stress of planning a vacation. Researching destinations, transportation, accommodations and activities can be a lot of work. Expedia research has shown that leisure travelers visit an average of 38 websites to get information and compare prices before finalizing their plans. If this sounds especially daunting, you're not alone! We reached out to travel industry expert Jim Menge for his insights into overcoming the challenges of solo travel. Menge has visited more than 100 countries and firmly believes in the benefits of making lasting memories with the people you get to know on a trip. Menge is also the President of Rovia(TM), an industry-leading travel and lifestyle service provider headquartered in Plano, Texas. "Travel is the ultimate expression of freedom," says Menge. "The freedom to leave home, to roam the earth, to see the world through the eyes of those you meet along the way and to share your world with them."

.To attain that freedom, Menge recommends joining a travel club that offers pre-planned group vacation packages. Group travel provides an opportunity to meet people who enjoy similar activities, and the curated offerings of a travel club relieve the stress of planning every aspect of a trip on your own. Not only do you have an easier way to book your next trip, you also get to create long-lasting memories with a new group of friends. So, why don't more people take advantage of group travel? Here are a few myths debunked: Myth No. 1: I'll be lonely. While a few in your group may already know each other, plenty of others will arrive solo, looking to meet new people. Unfamiliar settings have a way of bringing strangers together. In fact, a story in The Atlantic magazine revealed that people who share experiences are happier than those who experience things alone. Between sightseeing and sampling foreign delicacies, friendships flourish naturally between group members.

Myth No. 2: I'll have to do everything en masse. While there's typically an itinerary outlined for the entire group to follow, you're free to explore with a smaller group or on your own. One of the best ways to form new friendships is to connect over shared interests. If you and a few others want to see the same play or museum exhibit, go together! Myth No. 3: It's too expensive. Traveling with a group can actually help you save money. As part of a group, you can share food and transportation, and purchase reduced admission to popular attractions and activities. According to timeshareadvocates.org, vacation clubs present a good option for group travel because they offer value-packed trips at discounted rates to their members. One example is DreamTrips, an award-winning travel and leisure club where members enjoy professionally curated travel opportunities and valuable deals at select restaurants, hotels, excursions and entertainment venues all over the world. Still unsure? "It is an amazing privilege to be able to travel the world freely, to be able to see different countries and experience new cultures," says Menge. "When we meet and speak to those around us, it will only serve to enhance our journey. Go ahead and talk to your fellow travelers ... Talk to strangers. I promise it will make you feel more connected and more present while you travel." What are you waiting for? Put yourself out there. Find the vacation club that best fits your lifestyle and book your next getaway today.

CUSTOM SETTINGS MAKE SMARTPHONES EASY, ACCESSIBLE TO OLDER USERS BPT

The digital generation gap is slowly narrowing, as older users come to more fully grasp smartphone technology and appreciate its many benefits. New technologies make it easier than ever to maintain social contacts, monitor health and preserve independence. specialized gadgets sometimes over-promise and underdeliver. In fact, ordinary Android devices and iPhones are more popular choices, as they're economical, easy to find and customizable.

On every smartphone, there's also the option to create customized lists of contacts for convenient calling or texting. It's easy to organize specific lists to quickly and easily find numbers for close relatives, medical providers or other important local services. So many good choices

Have it your way There are countless amazing tasks a smartphone can perform, but the biggest advantage is that they can be fully customized to meet the unique requirements of nearly any user. By spending just a few minutes adjusting settings, a device's functionality can be made as simple or robust as you need it to be. Today's smartphones include a variety of powerful accessibility features that make them incredibly userfriendly. On an iPhone, go to Settings > General > Accessibility to find many convenient options, such as closed captioning on apps that support it, and a built-in magnifier that uses the phone's camera. Android phones have a menu of similar functions, which can be found under Settings > Advanced > Accessibility. Samsung models even offer an "Easy Mode," which configures the Home screen with a simpler layout and bigger icons to provide an easier experience for firsttime smartphone users. More adventurous users may even want to explore digital assistants like Google Assist, or Apple's Siri, which respond to voice commands. The average size of a smartphone screen has grown over the years, with the current average at 5.5 inches. In addition to being easier to see due to their sheer size and magnificent resolution, custom settings let users adjust factors like contrast, brightness, and the size of fonts and icons to suit their preferences.

It seems hard to believe the first iPhone and Android smartphones were only introduced a little over 10 years ago. Since those not-so-distant days of 2007 and 2008, they've become a nearly indispensable part of most people's lives. Last year, there were more than 200 million smartphone users, and 90 million iPhone users, in the U.S. alone. If you're a newcomer to smartphones, there are so many great options that it can be hard to choose. To help find what's best for you, look to a carrier like Consumer Cellular, a recognized leader in providing innovative and affordable wireless solutions to users age 50+. They offer a wide variety of phones to choose from, as well as value-priced, no-contract monthly plans. The best smartphones are designed for easy use, whether you're having trouble seeing text on the display, finding the right buttons to press, or hearing the person on the other end of the phone. With a little research and preparation, you can have the perfect device in your hands in no time.

Tips and tricks to keep your car looking new this spring %< %37 The colder weather is fleeting, flowers are blossoming and the grass is just a little greener, which means spring is finally here. While most of your time will be spent preparing your home, clothes and family calendars for the warmer weather, it's important not to forget about your car. In fact, you can celebrate springtime by spending some time enjoying the fresh outdoor air and showing your car some love ahead of upcoming family vacations and summer road trips with friends. Start with these smart and simple tips to improve your ride: Freshen up the interior Interior and exterior cleaning makes a big difference in keeping a car looking and driving its best, but that doesn't solve odor issues. To finalize spring car prep and maintenance, make sure to use a product that will leave the car smelling as good as it looks. Innovative and discrete vent sticks and mini diffusers from Refresh Your Car! come in a wide variety of scents, like Lemon Lime Sunshine, and are an affordable, long-lasting way to keep a car smelling great!

Clean and protect your interior The interior, especially leather, is the most used and abused part of a car. Over time, constant use and sun damage can result in you leather interior drying out, causing it to fade, crack and rip. A quick and trusted way to address this issue is to use Lexol Leather Cleaner & Conditioner. The easy two-step process will help clean, restore and protect a car's interior, keeping it looking and feeling like new. Check your battery The colder the weather, the harder a battery and charging system need to work in a car. Start by making sure the battery is mounted correctly and the connections are free from corrosion. Also, consider replacing the battery if it's older than five years, which will ensure you don't get stranded out on the road. Check and replace basic car items Before heading out on any lengthy adventures, make sure the car is up-to-date on oil changes. During the oil change a technician should also check and replenish other fluids like the brake, transmission, windshield wiper and power steering fluids, as well as your coolant. This often forgotten about maintenance will help a car run smoothly for months to come.

Wash and wax No matter the season, a car that is driven daily is constantly battling the elements, which can cause damage to its exterior. Washing regularly and waxing at least twice a year is an easy way to keep a car looking its best, protecting it from damaging UV rays, road debris, tree sap and rusting. When washing and protecting, don't forget about tires and wheels. The Eagle One A2Z All Wheel & Tire Cleaner is an affordable, easy-touse spray that clings to the dirt on the surface of most wheels and tires, easily removing brake dust, grime and grease; giving your wheels and tires a spotless, professional look. Easing into exercise After sitting around all winter, it is not a good idea to jump right into a full exercise regimen full speed ahead. The best approach to get your pet ready for more activities outside is a gradual introduction into exercise. A game of fetch is a perfect way to get your pet up and moving. The Chuckit! Launcher and Locator Sound Ball provides an easy way for your pet to increase their stamina, with the added entertainment of retrieving a ball that emits an audible pulse sound every few seconds to help pet parents and dogs locate the ball in any terrain after launch.

Tips to keep your pet healthy in the heat #: #15

Spring is here, summer is approaching fast and it's time to get outside and start taking advantage of the warmer weather. Dr. Jeff Werber, Emmy award-winning celebrity veterinarian, has a few tips and tricks on how to keep your pet happy and healthy in the heat. Before you start your jogging treks, hiking excursions or bicycle touring with your furry partner by your side, it's important to understand these spring/summer safety measures to keep your pet happy and safe.

If your pet enjoys chasing ground pursuits (think rabbits and squirrels), the Chuckit! RingChaser is a great option to satisfy their instincts. Again, short bursts of chasing and retrieving are a fun way to get your pup back into shape. It's also critical to choose the best time of day to exercise - and noon is not it. The best time to enjoy your pet's company is early in the morning or early in the evening. Keep in mind that in the evening after the sun is down, the pavement can still be pretty warm, as it retains heat for quite a while. Where possible, try to exercise on a grassy or dirt surface to avoid burning or irritating their paws. Keeping cool and staying hydrated What we love so much about our dogs is how loyal they are and how much they want to please us. This can be a problem when it comes to potential overexertion, as they will keep going just to be with us, even though they may be overheating. Moreover, many dogs and cats can overheat from lying around the house or backyard as well. When leaving pets outside during the spring or summer, make sure that shade and fresh water are always available. There are many devices available that can provide water automatically or ondemand, like the Petmate Replendish Waterer, which provides a constant flow of fresh water throughout the day for pets even when the pet parent isn't home. If you're out and about with your pet, consider the Replendish To-Go Water bottle that conveniently includes a travel bowl for your pet. For longer excursions, or for hotter climates, wet a bandana and place it in the freezer the night before so it will remain nice and cool a little longer. Also, make regular stops in a shady area to allow both of you to catch your breath. Indoor dogs and cats also need to escape from the heat. Make sure the house isn't kept too warm. Keep at least one room cooler by leaving the shades or drapes closed. Enough has been written about pets and parked cars, so I'm sure you are all aware of that potential deadly hazard. Don't do it, not even in the shade or "only for a few minutes." Enough said. Limitless possibilities, while on a leash You and your pet are finally enjoying the great outdoors, and the fun activities with Fido are endless. Our pet nation has a huge population, and it's important to be a good citizen. Remember to respect other pets' "space" and boundaries, and don't assume every dog is dying to play with yours. Wherever you and your pet decide to roam, be mindful of the local leash laws. You don't want to turn a fun outing into an emergency room visit for you or anyone else. If you're heading off to a park or hiking area, make sure you have everything you need for your trek. Travel treats and water bottles are always a good idea to keep with you, to make sure you and your pet are well fueled and hydrated. Keep essentials, like your keys, lip balm, waste bag, etc., all in one place with the Petmate Zipp Leash that features an expandable pouch built right into the leash to hold all dog-walking basics while on the go. Regardless of whether you choose to run, romp, hike or trek, spring and summer are great times of year to bond with your pets. I encourage all of you to get outdoors, enjoy the warmth and sunshine, and to include your four-legged kids in your activities. Just remember to play it smart and keep them safe.

3 WAYS TO SET THE STAGE FOR THE PERFECT SUMMER SOIREE By: BPT The backyard barbecue is a staple of the American summer. Long days filled with sun, fun, family and friends are what make lifelong memories. Now is the perfect time to start planning for your next barbecue, so you, too, can create memories you won't soon forget.

"Many people tell us they love the beauty and durability of their composite deck, but not the heat," said Brent Gwatney, vice president of MoistureShield Decking. His company has developed a solution they call CoolDeck technology. The boards are engineered to absorb up to 35 percent less heat than other composites in similar colors, for a noticeably lower surface temperature on hot summer days.

However, before you fire up the grill, you will want to ensure your backyard is prepped and ready to host your friends and family.

2. Create shade Here are three tips to help you create the perfect setting for your patio party:

Once you have protected your feet from the heat, you'll want to shield the rest of your body from the summer sun with a pergola or gazebo. These stylish coverings provide a refreshing shady area for friends and family to relax and enjoy themselves. Turn this area into the ultimate relaxation zone by adding hammocks or hanging chairs, along with climbing vines for added beauty and extra protection from the sun.

1. Lay the groundwork The first step to setting any stage is to lay the groundwork. Unfortunately, many deck or patio surfaces become uncomfortably hot in the direct sun. The problem affects dark-colored deck boards, especially, which absorb heat throughout the day, as well as some composite boards that hold heat. As a result, what should be a comfortable stroll across your deck might end up feeling more like a crash course in the ancient art of fire walking. An overly hot deck is especially problematic for young children and pets, whose feet are more heat sensitive.

If you are a weekend do-it-yourself type, look for gazebo and pergola plans on popular social media sites like Pinterest and Houzz. For the less handy, many deck builders will complete the project for you without breaking the bank. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

3. Light up the night Once the sun sets and the temperature drops, you might find yourself missing the light and warmth of the day. While tiki torches offer a temporary aesthetic solution, a more permanent outdoor fireplace can provide heat, light and ambiance to keep your guests happy long into the night. There are many style options, from wood-burning designs to more modern styles that burn gas or propane. The pricing varies greatly depending on whether you decide on a custom build, or choose to purchase a prefab or portable unit from a home improvement store. With a custom-built fireplace you can even include an outdoor pizza oven and give your guests an alternative to the typical burgers and hot dogs menu. A custom-built fireplace will cost more, and will require a stonemason, but will allow for more personalized features. For more budget-friendly options, you can always pick up a simple woodburning fire pit from your local home improvement store, starting as low as $200. Whether you are designing a completely new backyard or just giving your existing one a face-lift, these three tips will help you to create a stylish space that will keep you and your guests comfortable and happy during all of your summer events. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

b4 ways to simplify your DIY projects and home improvements Whether you're working on a spring home improvement project or a summer task, this is the time of year when you focus on improving your home both inside and out. As you look for ways to make your home even better, nothing beats a good DIY project.

DIY home improvement projects are popular each year, and they can be as big or small, short or long and expensive or inexpensive as you desire. Whether you are an advanced builder or a novice home improver, the options are wide open, but remember the one thing every DIYer can agree on: Eliminating unnecessary difficulties and the chance of having to redo a task is always a plus. A recent Post-it Brand study conducted by Wakefield Research found nearly 40 percent of workers have to redo a project or task at least once a week specifically because of poor communication. Even professionals run into hurdles along the way, but avoid situations such as this with a few easy tips. To make your next DIY project go as smoothly as possible, here are four ways you can iron out potential difficulties before they become a problem. After all, a smooth project isn't just more fun and rewarding, it saves you time. * Capitalize on subject matter expertise. A little experience goes a long way, and you'll understandably have an easier time tackling a DIY project you've done before. In many cases, however, this isn't possible, so look to your friends and family to see if any of them have ever completed a similar project. Ask them your questions and learn from their experiences and you'll gain valuable insight about what to do - and what not to do - before your project even gets started. * Keep accurate, durable notes. Throughout the course of your project, you'll take notes regarding processes, punch lists, measurements and the materials you need. However, even a slight miscommunication or lost note can compromise the project, even for a professional. Post-it Extreme Notes are an innovative new product designed to facilitate communication and ensure important notes stick securely, whether on a job site in construction, manufacturing or foodservice or at home in a freezer, garage, boiler room or bathroom. They stick to textured, rough and curved surfaces, including those involved in home improvement projects such as raw wood, brick exteriors, tile bathrooms, cement garages and more. Made with ultra-strong Dura-Hold Paper and Adhesive, Postit Extreme Notes withstand harsh conditions indoors and outdoors, like moisture, wind and extreme temperatures. These durable, water-resistant notes help keep track of important information to get the job done no matter what the task is. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

201

* Explore your options to find the right tool for the job. How many times have you tried to tackle a DIY project with the wrong tools simply because you didn't want to spend the money on the right tool for a one-time use? If this has ever happened to you, consider renting the items you need instead of buying them. Tools like paint sprayers, jackhammers and brush cutters can all be rented for a fraction of the price you would pay to buy them, and doing so ensures you have the right tool for the job from the very beginning, allowing your project to go more smoothly. * Plan out as much as you can. The adage of measure twice, cut once still holds true for today's DIY projects, and your possibilities to "measure twice" are magnified thanks to modern technology. If you're planning to paint a room, for example, many paint companies offer a simulator where you can see how the paint will look in a digital environment. There are also other virtual tools to help you get accurate measurements, test layouts and reduce mistakes in your DIY projects. Once you've found the answers you need, record them on a durable note like Post-it Extreme Notes and write down measurements, jot down step-by-step directions and map out furniture and paint placement throughout the process. Start planning your project today Big or small, your project is as unique as you - but it won't be completed until you start. Apply the tips above and your project will be done before you know it.

Data statistics about communication are results from a Post-it Brand survey conducted by Wakefield Research (www.wakefieldresearch.com) among 1,000 U.S. workers, ages 18+, who work in nonoffice settings, with statistically significant data among the following industries: trades/construction, manufacturing and culinary, using an email invitation and an online survey. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

6 WAYS TO REVIVE YOUR HOME WITH ITH ESSENTIAL TIA IAL BPT OILS

www.ckwmag.info

Brighten your DIY cleaning products. Ditch the chemicals lurking in store-bought cleaning supplies and make your own, infused with intoxicating scents! Once you try it, you'll never go back to commercial cleaners. And it's easier than you might think. Here's just one recipe: For window cleaner, combine 1 1/2 cups distilled water, 2 tablespoons white vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon of Aura Cacia Main Squeeze Essential Oil Blend in a 16-ounce spray bottle. Shake well, and voila! You're ready to tackle your windows. You'll find more easy recipes for making your own, natural cleaning products at www.auracacia.com. Banish food odors. Is the smell of the bacon you fried for breakfast still lingering in the kitchen at dinner? Pop a pan of warm water on the stove and add essential oils like cinnamon or citrus and simmer. It's a quick, low-cost way to diffuse oils for instant aromatherapy while getting rid of lingering cooking odors.

Essential oils, highly concentrated essences of plants, have the power to improve our lives, revive our spaces and boost our mood, whether it's through diffusing them to add a fresh scent to the kitchen, creating a spa-like oasis in your bathroom or whipping up DIY cleaning products to use all over your home. "How we care for the everyday spaces we live in impacts our well being," said Charlynn Avery, an aromatherapist and educator for Aura Cacia, a company that sources and sells essential oils. "It's all about the power of positive change. Clean, synthetic-free living is good for everyone, and using essential oils in your home is one way to do that."

Make the most of your open house. Realtors will tell you that bad smells make a bad impression, and good smells make a positive impression. It's important to clean your home from top to bottom to neutralize pet odors, your teen's room full of gym clothes and other sources of bad smells. Essential oils don't just cover up odors, they can enhance your mood. Try citrus oils like lime in a room spray, grapefruit in a diffuser or sweet orange simmering on the stove to promote positive feelings in potential buyers. Becalm your bathrooms. Set a diffuser on the counter and add lemon, grapefruit or orange for a fresh scent, or try lavender, eucalyptus or tea tree to create a garden-like oasis.

Even better news? It's easy to use essential oils to refresh and revive your living space. Here are some ideas to get you started: Freshen up your fridge. Most everyone has a box of baking soda tucked on a shelf in their fridge to absorb odors from last week's leftovers or that questionable carton of milk. Why not make the box do double duty by adding essential oils? Grapefruit, lime, bergamot or lemongrass will give your fridge a fresh scent. Hint: Sprinkle a little of the baking soda mixed with essential oils into your garbage can to freshen it, too.

Revitalize your carpets. Pets, kids and general foot traffic can do a number on the way your carpets smell, and that odor can permeate the whole room. Add the essential oil of your choice, like bergamot, to a box of new baking soda. Sprinkle it on your carpet, let it sit for 15 minutes or so and vacuum it up. Hint: Pop a cotton ball doused with essential oil into your vacuum bag or filter to spread fresh scent every time you vacuum. For more information about essential oils, including recipes for DIY products and more ways to use them, visit Aura Cacia.

Trend No. 2: Fun and inventive veggies Vegetable gardening is a great way to explore foods you may not have heard of, like Dragon Roll Shishito Pepper, which has become a hit on menus across the country. Milder than a jalapeno with great umami flavor, 1 in 10 peppers is spicy-hot for an intriguing meal experience. They're easy to grow in planters on patios or in the ground, making them the perfect choice for foodies. Trend No. 3: Organic vegetable and herb gardening It's common for people to look for organic food when grocery shopping. Likewise, more gardeners want to be sure the food they are growing is organic. This means using organic fertilizer and plant food, as well as growing certified organic vegetables and herbs. The organic label means these plants are free from chemical additives, which is better for the environment and for you. From sweet bell peppers and ripe tomatoes to crisp cucumbers and juicy strawberries, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing the source of your food. Whether you're new to growing your own food or a seasoned gardener looking to expand your tastes, Burpee has unique and exclusive flavors to make your vegetable garden a success. Home improvement projects aren't constrained to a single season, but during these warmer months, your focus is no longer simply on your home's indoors. Now there's outdoor yard work to do as well, and if you're looking to recreate your outdoor space, your outside projects may include some landscaping. If you have landscaping as part of your to-do list this season, the right strategy can ensure that you get the most benefit from your landscaping goals with the least amount of headache. To that end, here are five tips to simplify your landscaping projects this year. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

www.ckwmag.info

208

* Plan for the entire year. Landscaping projects can be hard work, and because of that, you deserve to enjoy them for as long as possible. That's why it's important to plan your landscaping layout with the entire year in mind. Research your plant and flower options based on bloom periods and plant a variety so your yard is always being introduced to new pops of color. You should also add evergreen shrubs and other such plant life to your overall plan to give you a spot of color in the winter and preserve your landscaping look. * Be mindful of other tools outside your home. When developing your landscaping strategy, you need to be aware not only of your home but the other vital components outside as well. Many homeowners are not mindful of their home's HVAC units and may place landscaping solutions too close to the unit, which makes it difficult for techs to service the unit and exposes your system to the harmful effects of debris. Instead, plan to keep all landscaping at least two feet away from your HVAC system. This allows units like the Champion Momentum Variable Capacity Residential System to operate at peak efficiency and allows service techs to utilize its built-in advanced monitoring system to provide accurate readouts for faster annual service, maximized service life and improved comfort in your home. * Touch every corner of your yard. Your home is naturally the focal point of your yard, but it doesn't have to be the only one. Creating a berm - a moundtype space that you can fill with rocks, wood chips or a flower garden - can add a pop of color and visual appeal to an otherwise plain area. These visual attractions can be placed anywhere, but adding one to an otherwise deserted corner of your yard is a great way to tie the entire space together and make the most of an unused area. * Add plants that fit your lifestyle. When planning your landscaping project, it's important to remember this isn't just a one-time solution. Your landscaping will need continual work, and as such, your landscaping plan should be based partly on the time you have to dedicate to the project. For example, if you're a person who appreciates beautifully colorful flowers but doesn't want to replant them every year, you should start your project by planting perennials instead of annuals. Your time commitment in year one will be roughly the same, but you'll ease your time requirements in the years ahead.

www.cheakwoolfolk.com

CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

www.ckwmag.info

209

* Monitor your budget. Like many things, a lavish landscaping project can get away from you very quickly in the financial department. Veteran landscapers know that it becomes very easy to get swept up in the project and before you know it, you've added a slightly larger tree or another bush or two. Then you suddenly have unexpected costs heading your way. Instead of ending your exciting project on a bad note with a higher bill, plan out your budget ahead of time. Try to get as specific as possible with where you plan to spend every dollar. The more you can hold to each line item in your budget, the better you'll be able to avoid unnecessary expenses throughout the process. Making landscaping improvements to your yard can be a fun and rewarding project provided you follow a strategy that makes the best use of your time and money. Apply the tips above and you'll be rewarded with a beautifully landscaped yard that you can enjoy every day of the year. A mobile home refers to a home manufactured prior to the standards set by the HUD Code. Back then, the homes were built to voluntary industry standards enforced at the state level in 45 out of the 48 states in the continental U.S.

While the difference in quality between today's manufactured homes and preHUD Code mobile homes is evident, you may be wondering how the terms "mobile" and "manufactured" are so often confused. One similarity that may be the biggest contributor to the confusion is titling. Like the mobile homes built prior to HUD Code, modern manufactured homes also require a title. So what does that mean? Requirements for titling vary by state, but generally a manufactured home requires a title much like an automobile. This is because a manufactured home is considered personal property. As personal property, a manufactured home is typically taxed separately from the land on which it sits. Visit https://drivinglaws.aaa.com/ for more general information on state-specific laws regarding the titling of manufactured homes. State laws determine the process for surrendering the manufactured home title when the home is permanently affixed to the land, becomes part of the real estate, and is no longer considered personal property separate from the land. Like manufactured homes, modular homes are also constructed indoors, sheltered from the elements. But unlike manufactured homes, modular homes do not require a title. Since they are built to International Residential Code standards and not the HUD Code, ownership of modular homes is treated the same as sitebuilt homes. The most common causes of homeowners insurance claims

T

The value of homeowners insurance is often thrust into the national spotlight when natural disasters happen. The devastation and financial loss they can cause reinforces the importance of making sure you have adequate insurance coverage to rebuild if disaster strikes your home. In 2017 alone, the U.S. was struck by 16 separate billiondollar disaster events, resulting in a recordbreaking $300 billion in damage, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Thankfully, most Americans don't experience large-scale natural catastrophes, but millions of homeowners do experience some kind of property loss each year and need to make an insurance claim. The most commonly reported homeowners insurance claims are actually the result of events that can occur at any time, so it's important for homeowners to be prepared for these potential risks. Water damage claims are most common "Water claims are the ones we see most often," says Christopher O'Rourke, Vice President of Property Claims at Mercury Insurance. "While certain perils are seasonal, water damage can occur any time of year. It's important for homeowners to conduct routine maintenance of appliance hoses and water pipes to make sure there aren't cracks or leaks and, if any are detected, have them repaired or replaced immediately. "Another thing everyone can do to protect their homes from leaks is turn off their main water supply when they're away for an extended period of time. No one wants to return from a relaxing vacation to find water running through their home."

Smart home technology also delivers an extra layer of protection for homeowners by providing 24/7 monitoring to help detect water pipe leaks. Professionally installed water pressure sensors, for example, work with most smartphones and can, among other things, automatically shut off the home's main water supply if a leak or burst pipe is detected. And the best part is that insurance companies like Mercury Insurance will often provide a discount for homes that implement this technology. O'Rourke also notes that most homeowners insurance policies don't cover flood damage caused by rising water from storms or overflowing bodies of water, so he recommends homeowners consult with their local insurance agent to learn how to protect against these types of events. Fire damage is a concern for homeowners While water claims are the most common, fire damage is another possible concern for homeowners and can be caused in several ways. The National Fire Protection Association reports nearly half a million structure fires occurred in 2016, resulting in $7.5 billion in property damage, and wildfires ravaged California in 2017, leading to one of the year's billion-dollar disaster events. O'Rourke suggests controlling the things you can and mitigating against the perils you can't. "Most home fires happen when people are inattentive or negligent. These fires are preventable if people don't leave things like lit stoves, fireplaces, candles or portable heat sources unattended. You should also refrain from overloading electrical outlets and using appliances with frayed electrical cords," he says. "These things seem like common sense, but it's amazing how many claims we see that result from simply not paying attention. "Wildfires can be extremely scary and dangerous and there is often little warning when they sweep through areas, leaving homeowners little time to protect their homes. Most of this work needs to be done before a fire erupts. Homeowners can mitigate against this risk by keeping their yards free of dry brush, grass clippings and twigs, keep tree branches trimmed and bushes pruned. They should also make sure their roofs and gutters are cleared of leaves and debris." Theft can be costly Theft doesn't necessarily pose a threat to the physical structure of a home, but it too can be costly and it often leaves homeowners feeling scared and violated. The FBI's Universal Crime Report estimates 1.5 million burglaries occurred in 2016 - with residential properties accounting for 69.5 percent of these offenses. Homeowners can help safeguard against theft by taking simple, but often overlooked precautions like ensuring doors and windows are locked, and not leaving spare keys in easy-to-find locations. Several smart home devices can also aid in deterring potential thieves by allowing homeowners to adjust lights, monitor security cameras and activate security systems from their smartphones even when they're away from home. "Our claims team strives to get our customers back on their feet after a loss. Our hope is that people never experience such an event in the first place, but if they do we want them to know that it is our goal to help them get their lives back to normal as quickly as possible," adds O'Rourke. Mercury Insurance provides homeowners with additional tips to protect against common insurance claims. Visit https://blog.mercuryinsurance.com to learn more.

From millennial's who have been grinding away in the workplace for a few years to Gen Xers looking to move out of their cube, many have been intrigued by the possibility of freelancing..

It means the freedom to set your own hours, to work closely with clients, to be your own boss and have greater control over your career. According to Forbes, there are 53 million freelancers in America today, and by 2020, it's estimated that half of the workforce will be doing freelance work, whether full time, as a part-time gig or as their side hustle. Unlike a traditional job, where you generally don't need to bring more than a packed lunch to work, freelancing requires a few essential tricks and tools to succeed. Whether you're looking to start out or refresh your personal brand, homeworking experts cite five important tips to help you succeed at the freelance game. 1. Manage your time. One of the best parts, and the most challenging parts, of freelancing is that you get to make your own schedule. Many find that they need some sort of structure in their day, and for this reason it's important to have the right time management software. This will notify you of calls, deadlines, track how long you work on a project and more. 2. Get the right laptop. A laptop is your office, your meeting room, your library, your entertainment source and so much more, making it one of the most essential freelancing tools. It's the lifeline between your business and your clients, so it's critical to be sure you have the right one. A great option is the remarkably thin and light LG gram. This computing powerhouse comes in 13-, 14- and 15-inch screen options and packs a battery that lasts over 16 hours. Each model weighs about two pounds and for small businesses looking for extra connectivity, LG's commercialgrade model comes equipped with the Windows 10 Pro operating system. It's fast, mobile and able to keep up with the daily demands and surprises of the freelancing life. 3. Use professional email and social media accounts. For all work-related correspondence and interactions, be sure to use a dedicated email account. This will make you appear more professional to prospective clients. You should also set up work-related social media accounts where you can post examples of work and professional insights and network.

222

4. Keep track of finances. For a lot of freelancers who are on the creative side of things, keeping track of finances can be a real challenge. Not only do you have to manage invoices, expenses and make sure you're getting paid, you also have to keep taxes in mind. That can be a lot of numbers to juggle. The right accounting software can greatly simplify this process and save you innumerable headaches. 5. Find the right space. While freelancing is largely a digital game, and requires the right laptop loaded up with the tools you need to manage your business, you still need to find the right place to work. Some work in a coffee shop and others require a dedicated home office. You might work best in a shared office space. The point is, it's vital to figure out where you do your best work. The right software, running on the right computer, and a place you can work are the cornerstones of a successful freelance gig. From there, all that's needed is your talent and determination!

Understanding that the United States African-American population annually has a purchasing power of $1.3 trillion and after reading an article titled Median wealth of black Americans 'will fall to zero by 2053', a new report that warns of the huge and growing gulf between white US household’s wealth and everyone else could be disastrous for the future of America’s middle class. As we encroach the year 2044 when the United States becomes a majority minority country based on its racial/ethnic demographics and the majority of the country’s population has zero accumulated wealth and can’t raise capital for the creation of businesses, or commercial real estate development what will our country look like? According to the article “By 2020, median black and Latino households stand to lose nearly 18% and 12% of the wealth they held in 2013 respectively, while median white household wealth increases by 3%,” the report states. “At that point – just three years from now – white households are projected to own 86 times more wealth than black households, and 68 times more wealth than Latino households.” As you can see from these dismal reports the most pressing issue on the US economic horizon is the equiabilitle distribution of wealth in the African-American and Latino communities especially in urban communities where large concentration of these populations live. Why is Wealth Important The racial wealth gap is important because of the central role wealth plays in enabling families to both handle current financial challenges and make investments in their future. Families that have accumulated some wealth are better equipped to manage unanticipated expenses like an emergency medical bill, or disruptions in household income such as a layoff, without falling into debt or poverty. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

Wealth can expand the prospects of the next generation, by allowing parents or family members to help to pay for college, provide a down payment for a first home, or capitalize a new business. As long as a substantial racial wealth gap persists, white households will continue to enjoy greater advantages than their black and Latino neighbors in meeting the financial challenges of everyday life and will be able to make greater investments in their children, passing on economic advantages. It is very myopic for banks, angel investors, VCs and individual investors not to see the value of investing in diversity. Our children are at a “crossroads”. If they don’t get a handle on technology, they are going to be lost. Right now, the collective masses of young Blacks are underserved. It is very important that we don’t let them become the “left behind” entity of our population. We and other organizations must not let them slow their growth and intellectual development. The main ingredient is understanding the importance of entrepreneurship. The blue-collar world is being taken over by machinery or robotic application. Those who do not understand this demand of the modern world will be lost. Our children and communities must understand the importance of “Optimistic Vision”. The entrepreneurial ones will identify a need and come up with the solution. They will take that solution; patent into reality, sell it and prosper from the innovation, all the while creating jobs and economic vitality for their communities. These millennials will form new “Wall Streets” throughout our local communities through locavesting and crowdinvesting. This isn’t fashion or a trend – it is an imperative to survival for this nation and our communities. Diversity will prevail over all other models of society. Poverty in Action Poverty is so pervasive in Louisville’s black population that you see symptoms of poverty and mistake them for the real issues impacting the lives of the residents. Poverty is the underlying pathology that negatively impacts justice, education, health, and housing in black Louisville. In Metro Louisville 15 percent of whites live in poverty, but a 35 percent of black residents live in poverty. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

Research led by William Emmons and Bryan Noeth, found that between 1992 and 2013, college-educated Whites saw their wealth soar by 86 percent while college-educated Blacks sas their wealth plummet by 55 percent. One key factor is that Black student needed to take out much more in student loan debt than their white counterparts, which of course lead to a negative effect on wealth because of student loan debt. According to the Louisville Metropolitan Housing Coalition 71 percent of whites in Jefferson County are homeowners compared with 37.5 percent of black households. It is without question that homeownership is a major factor in the level of volatility of overall wealth in the Black and Latino communities. Policy as the Origin of the Racial Wealth Gap The origin of the racial wealth gap is deeply seated in the very convoluted and perplexing history of the United States. The United States had the opportunity at the time of the first Continental Congress to make good on its lofty ideals of freedom and equality of all men, but the Founding Fathers refused. From slavery to Jim Crow and convict leasing to the terrorism of lynching America has always made it policy to create white wealth from black labor. It is paramount that policy makers create a more equitable future by confronting the racial wealth gap and the public policies that continue to fuel and exacerbate it. Public policies like redlining, the GI Bill and VA loans that excluded people of color and were the primary drivers of building the white middle class through opportunities to access higher education and homeownership. It is impossible to ignore the massive economic these policies had on expanding the racial wealth gap. Locavesting as a Component of the Solution Locavesting is fundamentally about fixing our broken economic system. It’s about restoring a more just and participatory form of capitalism, one that allocates capital for productive use in our local community. It’s about forming alternative ideas and practices rather than a winner take all economy. It’s about rebuilding our savings, our communities and strengthening the core of our culture, and hopefully about influencing the culture of our country. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

Locavesting emphasizes investing in what you know, local companies that you can see, touch and understand their community value and contribution. It’s about spending your dollars for services where service is strengthened, and the dollar investment is recirculated in the local market, planting the seed for further growth equals a more self-reliant community. Locavesting is offering new considerations and explanations on how the work we do is one with ownership. Local business can at least take the bull by the horns in our communities and contribute to the local wellbeing day by day. It’s up to each of us to be a part of the solution. We must remember that our small steps can lead to a broader awareness. Small businesses—which by definition are locally owned—create two out of every three jobs in the U.S., employ half the private workforce and generate half of private GDP. They create local wealth by keeping money circulating locally—that’s called the local multiplier effect. They provide the foundation for a healthy and diversified local tax base and contribute to the health and well-being of their communities. Studies links the presence of small businesses to everything from better physical health to greater community engagement. It’s not just banks and VC firms that are holding back. As individual investors, almost all our investments, by default, are in the stocks and bonds of large corporations—often the very same ones sending jobs and profits overseas. At its core, locavesting is about tapping the capital that exists, right here, right now, in our communities to support the businesses that make them strong. It’s about exploring new funding models—like crowdfinance, direct public offerings and local investment groups—that empower entrepreneurs, investors and citizens in ways that benefit us all. Because if we care about our neighborhoods and the kind of world we live in, it’s upon us to do something about it. What is Crowdinvesting Crowdinvesting has created a new fund-raising mechanism for Black entrepreneurs, a group that has long been ostracized from the traditional capital formation. Crowdinvesting requires an entrepreneur to mine his or her social capital using digital marketing to collect small sums of invested capital form large pools of individual investors. There are no credit barriers to clear or wealthy contacts to tap. These long-standing requirements have presented challenges for Black entrepreneurs seeking bank loans and venture capital over and above the ordinary challenges faced by any startup or real estate developer. It’s extremely difficult for Black-owned firms to raise venture capital than non-minority-owned firms. Only 1 percent of venture-backed firms are founded by African-Americans, and only 13 percent of all venture-backed firms founded by any ethnic minority, according to CB Insights. Black-owned firms are less likely to receive loans, and they receive lower loan amounts and smaller equity investment, and pay higher interest rates than White-owned firms, according to the Department of Commerce.

Community Investment Benefits Crowdinvesting provides the best opportunity to transform our communities in the shortest amount of time. Crowdinvesting, like other regular equity investments, allow entrepreneurs to sell shares of their business to private shareholders, shares that can potentially be sold later at a much higher price per share. That’s how you attract real investment capital, and that’s why crowdinvesting will eclipse venture capital funding as the leading source of startup and local business capital by 2020. Today, Black entrepreneurs can directly tap into the $1.3 Trillion spending power of America’s Black Community. This figure would place Black America as the 13th largest global economy, to include the United States. Crowdinvesting allow the Black community to simultaneously tap the immense of source of capital as bot investor and customers. This will allow our capital to circulate in our communities more times and allow us to build both personal and community wealth. Imagine that by 2020, this new leading source of business and real estate capital amounted to 10 percent of our purchasing power. Our Black startups, community based small businesses, and urban real estate development being able to tap a $1.3 trillion investment pool to create jobs, revitalize commercial corridors, increase homeownership, and build community equity. As these business owners become more successful they will return to the community in the role of wealthy and sophisticated investors that will have the ability to rapidly accelerate the process of business, job, and wealth creation in the Black community through crowdinvesting. Community Transformation Crowdinvesting will not happen by osmosis or by wishing and hoping, but by a well-planned and intentional effort by people that are leading the charge to collaborate and to meet our community where they stand to begin the educational process. Today the Black community is a wealthy group of consumers and as a community if we want to be the change we want to see we must embrace the long road of transformation to a community of lenders and owners. Crowdinvesting can be one of the vehicles that can change our community for consumers to business and job creators, real estate developers and start on the long road to wealth creation. As a community, we must work in collaboration to expand the crowdinvesting discussion, celebrate innovative ideas, and provide access to networks, mentorship, and crowdinvesting platform for Black entrepreneurs to showcase their uniquely innovative ideas. There is also plenty of education to do around the dynamics and risks of crowdinvesting. Our communities are filled with nonprofits that are focused on creating programs that engage the disparities in our communities, and we must work with these entities to help them understand market principles that provide increased entrepreneurship, job creation, and wealth creation as more relevant solutions to our community specific social and economic issues.

Bill Huston is an Urban Development Consultant that is working to build inner-city economies that work for everyone and provide opportunities for every resident to participate, thrive, and build wealth. To do this, he: • Designs and implement community capital offerings • Help clients raise capital from their own communities in alignment with their values and goals. • Work in collaboration with wealthy investors, government entities, corporate and philanthropic foundations to create impact investment funds Bill founded Our Crowd Rocks Consulting to upend the traditional models for raising capital that has left out vast, untapped numbers of low-moderate income Black inner-city residents who want to invest in the businesses and organizations that provide real value to their communities. Our Crowd Rocks is leading a movement that is bringing new capital — by directly engaging the average person in the Black community as investors, real estate developers, and entrepreneurs — to the new crowd economy — an economy that is open, democratized, resilient, just, and sustainable. This movement of “crowd capitalists” is questioning the old paradigms and bringing new models to the table that expand the capital aggregation options for nonprofits and social enterprises that are more democratic and values-driven. These models allow all stakeholders to benefit as ventures thrive. Bill was named one of the Top 19 Global Crowdfunding Experts by Inc. HAVING TAX REGRETS? HERE ARE 5 WAYS TO PAY LESS AND SAVE MORE ON YOUR TAXES MOST OF US KNOW THE FEELING: TAX SEASON CAN BE A FRUSTRATING AND STRESSFUL TIME. YOU HAVE TO GATHER LOTS OF DOCUMENTS, REMEMBER ALL THE CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE OVER THE PAST YEAR THAT MIGHT AFFECT YOUR RETURN, AND FILE THE BPT REQUIRED PAPERWORK BEFORE TAX DAY ROLLS AROUND.

r.And while you do all of that, there's always that nagging feeling: Did you take advantage of all the deductions and credits the IRS has to offer? Is there more you can do to prevent taxes from eroding the value of your investment portfolio and eating away at your income? Are you prepared for the changes that are coming due to the new tax law? Like thousands of others, you might be experiencing a "tax hangover," that sense of regret that you overlooked some fine detail, that you could have paid less and ended up with more money in your pocket. The truth is: Your taxes shouldn't be top of mind just once a year. Tax planning is an important part of overall financial planning, and there are things you can do now to avoid having another exhausting experience next year.

The best place to start is to set up a meeting with a financial planner who can work with you to optimize your taxes and better integrate them into your financial plan. "Figuring out the best approach to your taxes can be challenging, and the new tax law won't make things any easier next year," said Geoffrey Brown, CEO of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA). "That's why now is the right time to find a professional advisor who can help you get the best possible outcome." To give you an idea of what you might be missing, NAPFA offers these five tips: 1. Get into a lower bracket. Your first tax strategy should be to try to get into a lower tax bracket. Individuals who make $38,700 ($77,400 if married) pay a base rate of 12 percent. If you make more than that, you jump to a rate of 22 percent. That's a huge leap! You should aim to be at the top of the lower bracket. To do this, focus on maximizing deductions that lower your pretax income, such as contributing to a 401(k) or a Health Savings Account (HSA). www.cheakwoolfolk.com

2. Be aware of withholdings. With the new tax law affecting your next return, you should double-check what's being withheld from your paycheck. Due to the big changes in the tax code, your withholdings could suddenly be too high or too low. If you withhold too little, you might owe more than expected during next year's tax season. You also want to make sure you're not withholding too much - in essence, you'd be loaning the government money when you could be investing it much more sensibly. Be sure to talk with a financial advisor to check whether you're withholding the right amount. 3. Put money into an HSA. If you're in relatively good health and your company offers an HSA as part of a benefits package, you should enroll and contribute to it. HSAs have the wonderful attribute of being almost completely tax-free. Your contribution isn't taxed when you put it in, and it isn't taxed when you take it out, either. In many ways, this is a tax-free savings account you can use toward your retirement. 4. Know how your kids fit in. One of the biggest changes in the tax code that will affect families' 2018 filing is the fact that the dependent deduction is no longer available. That means you can no longer deduct your children as dependents. However, the Child Tax Credit, which previously only applied to low-income taxpayers, is now available to taxpayers with much higher incomes. If you have dependent children on your tax return, you need to be aware of how this switch from dependency exemptions to tax credits will affect you. 5. Plan ahead. Taxes aren't something you do once a year. Set aside time with your financial advisor to do some tax planning exercises and make sure you are paying the lowest amount possible over the next few years. This includes forecasting your income and planning out when it would make more sense to itemize versus taking the standard deduction. This allows you to decide when to have elective medical procedures or increase your charitable giving, while still minimizing your tax burden. Everyone has different financial goals and is in a unique financial situation and taxes are a key part of the equation. By speaking with a personal financial advisor now, you can plan ahead and ensure the next tax season doesn't end in another tax hangover. PROBLEM GAMBLING: KNOW WHEN TO STOP BEFORE YOU START

By BPT

Leading experts in the field of gambling research maintain that it starts with being an informed consumer who understands the realities of gaming. "Being informed means understanding your thoughts about the next big win, beating the odds, and finding the hot machine or deck of cards," said Dr. James Whelan of the University of Memphis. "Misunderstanding these thoughts about chance can lead to harmful mistakes and excessive losses of money. Informed consumers know that setting limits on how much you spend and how long you play is the best way to not let these thoughts result in you losing more than you can afford."

The bright lights. The energy and laughter that fills the room. Casinos are fun and exciting to the vast majority of people but for some, they can be problematic.

Here's what everyone should keep in mind before their next casino visit.

Casinos are a form of entertainment, so how do you ensure what's meant to be a fun and leisurely activity continues to be a positive experience? Time spent at a casino should be a planned and budgeted entertainment option - like you would approach an evening out for dinner or a sporting event. There are preventative measures that can be taken to help ensure that an experience at a casino remains a fun one. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

Betting on a winning streak It's always exciting to hit a jackpot, but winning streaks are highly uncommon and beyond anyone's control. Each spin of the wheel or roll of the dice is an independent event, which means that the chances of a specific outcome aren't influenced by previous outcomes. So rolling snake eyes once makes you no more (or less) likely to roll snake eyes again. The chances of beating the odds Casino games are designed with a house advantage. Mathematically, the house advantage is a measure of how much the house expects to win, expressed as a percentage of the player's wager. For example, in a wager with a house advantage of 5 percent, the player will lose, on average over time, $5 for every $100 wagered. Because the odds always favor the house, the longer or faster a person plays a casino game, the more the person should expect to lose even in skill-based or hybrid games. In the same way, the more a person wagers, the more the person should expect to lose. Believing in superstitions It might be fun to imagine that rubbing a rabbit's foot improves a player's chances of hitting a jackpot, but the reality is that this "magical thinking" has no impact whatsoever. Cheating aside, there's nothing a player can do - no ritual or lucky charm - to influence the outcome of any casino game. Superstitions can't determine whether a player wins or loses because every casino game - whether it's blackjack, craps or a slot machine - is based on randomness, or on chance. Lisa Arroyo has worked at Harrah's Joliet Casino in Illinois for the past 25 years. Like everyone who works at a Caesars Entertainment property, Arroyo thinks about gambling as a fun activity you pay for, like going to the movies or to a theater performance. Arroyo has heard customers laughing and having fun playing blackjack - and she has also heard customers make troubling statements that have caused her concern. "We definitely don't want people to come in and spend more than what they have budgeted. We want our guests to simply have fun and gamble responsibly. If someone makes a statement or series of statements that concern us, we will have a discussion with the patron and inform them of responsible gaming options and alternatives if needed." Gambling responsibly? Is responsible gaming an oxymoron? Not at all. Arroyo wants gambling to be a choice made for the right reasons. She is one of the advocates of Caesars Entertainment's Responsible Gaming program, the first hospitality gambling program of its kind to formally train employees on the importance of Responsible Gaming.

The premise of the program involves Arroyo and her colleagues across Caesars' global network of properties, called Responsible Gaming (RG) Ambassadors, who are celebrating their 15th year of assisting casino guests who may not be gambling responsibly. If comments or statements are made that are concerning to any employee, that concern is brought to the attention of the RG Ambassador who will sit down with the guest to address the reported concern, offer problem gambling program assistance and help resources, and answer questions. "We just let them know that if they feel like they might have a problem, we're here to answer questions and help," said Arroyo.

USE THESE SLEEP TIPS TO STAY SAFE AND PRODUCTIVE AT WORK By BPT Don't burn the midnight oil Working late nights might impress your boss, but restricting your sleep can lead to trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling emotions and more, severely affecting your productivity at work. The National Safety Council reports that workers who sleep fewer than six hours per night cost employers six days a year in productivity.

It's time for America's workforce to wake up. If you are one of the tens of millions of adults sleeping fewer than seven hours each night - the amount recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) - you are likely jeopardizing performance, increasing accident risks and putting everyone in danger during commutes. Getting enough sleep every night is key to improving productivity, safety and quality of life. Here are some tips to make sleep work for you. www.cheakwoolfolk.com

Sleep for safety Workers who sleep less than six hours per night are also at higher risk for injury, according to the Sleep Research Society. Cognitive and motor performance impairments caused by sleep deprivation can be comparable to drinking alcohol. If you make it a daily priority to recognize the signs of fatigue before, during and after work, and refuse to drive drowsy, you can reduce the risk of serious injury for yourself and others. This may be especially true if you work a job that involves manual labor or heavy machinery. Strategies for non-traditional work hours Some of the more high-risk professions involve working irregular hours. Shift workers - who can be nurses, law enforcement officers, emergency responders, transportation operators and more - work overnight or early morning hours with irregular or rotating shifts, causing upheaval in the body's circadian rhythm and natural sleep/wake cycle. According to the AASM, shift workers may sleep up to four fewer hours per night than those working traditional hours, increasing the risk for injuries, accidents and drowsy driving. The CDC reports that serious long-term health problems are a concern, too. However, there are ways for shift workers to combat this problematic sleep schedule. Tips for 'wake time' * Avoid exposure to sunlight if you need to sleep during the day, and wear sunglasses if you must go outside. * Use moderate amounts of caffeine in the early part of your shift. * Use public transportation, rideshare or take a cab, or arrange rides from friends or family after a work shift. * Take a 20- to 30-minute nap during a work break or before a night shift. * Get help from a sleep specialist to reinforce your body clock with strategically timed bright light therapy. Tips for 'sleep time' * Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the hours before you go to bed. * Plan for any major changes in your shift schedule by altering your sleep time a few days in advance. * Try to keep the same schedule on workdays and days off and create an effective "wind down" routine before going to bed. * Keep your bedroom at a cool temperature, turn off all electronics and only do relaxing activities like reading or journaling. Use the National Healthy Sleep Awareness Project's bedtime calculator, which helps you find your ideal bedtime based on when you need to wake up for work - even if that's in the middle of the night. Getting at least seven hours of sleep isn't just a matter of feeling alert for productivity and safety on the job; it's a necessary component of good health and well-being. If you're having trouble sleeping, you should talk to your doctor, who may refer you to a board-certified sleep medicine physician at an accredited sleep center for help. policyholders in the U.S. are dealing with annual deductibles of at least $1,000.

.Whether you're uninsured or simply facing a high insurance deductible, you can take several steps to better manage your healthcare budget. Consider how the following tips may offer you a better sense of control of rising healthcare costs. * Read bills with a critical eye. Any bill can include administrative errors, and some estimates have indicated errors on as many as 80 percent of medical invoices issued, reports the Medical Billing Advocates of America. That statistic makes it well worth your while to examine and question your expenses before you settle up. * Lower the cost of your meds. A free program known as Inside Rx is a prescription savings card that provides discounts on prescription medications for eligible patients. And it's amazingly effective. According to the data, eligible patients have saved an average of 40 percent on the more than 100 featured brand medications included in the program, and even more on generic medications. Inside Rx is a great option to help the uninsured, those facing high deductibles or anyone trying to save money on their meds. Inside Rx even offers prescription savings for pets for qualifying medications. And the Inside Rx card is free and easy to download, with no registration process or sharing of personal information. * Compare costs whenever possible. Some medical services can be difficult to compare on an apples-to-apples basis, but it's worth doing your homework before making appointments for more standard services such as annual checkups, lab work and testing, dental care or dermatology services. Check vendor websites, make phone calls and conduct web searches to find online databases, such as HealthcareBluebook.com, that suggest fair prices for various services. If you're insured, your insurance provider can then clarify what portion of the bill will be covered. * Be bold about negotiations. It's OK to speak up. You have nothing to lose by politely asking your healthcare provider to work with you on the price of an upcoming service, especially when dealing with a private practice. Start the conversation by aiming for the Medicare rate or an amount close to that paid by commercial insurers. As an alternative, ask the office administrator to set up a manageable payment plan. * Consider paying cash up front. Some vendors offer discounts for simply paying cash for your services without funneling everything through insurance. Even if you're insured, you can still evaluate whether immediate cash payments will be lower than your post-insurance costs.

Keeping a close eye on where you might be wasting money on healthcare can pay off in a big way - and the remedies don't have to be complicated. Conduct your due diligence on such costs to protect your financial health as vigorously as your physical health.

If you would like to submit an article but cannot supply photos, that’s fine; however, please give us plenty of advance notice so that if we use your article we can get an illustrator. Please see our Photo Guidelines below. We also appreciate an author photo to accompany your short (several-line) author bio. Thanks for your contributions! Use of Photos - Unless you specify otherwise, your submission of photos constitutes permission for them to appear in our print magazine and also possibly on our website, in digital editions, and/or in future compilations. Thanks again for helping us create a beautiful magazine!
