EDITOR'S LETTER AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2018 This month’s issue was inspired by the many women I’ve met during my travels who have shared their stories of not fitting into standardize beauty boundaries. I was thinking of how as a young girl I adored fashion dolls and how the role playing I did in my youth impacted the woman I am today. For me ‘Barbie” was not just a toy but a way to visual success and the future. I wanted to see if just for a day to step into the shoes of Barbie and present her my way. I allowed my flaws, personal imperfections and my own presentation of beauty to be showcased. What I want to do is help remove the thinking that a woman must be a size 6, a certain shade or have a specific career to be of importance. I want every woman no matter their skin and mindset to know they are beautiful. Be your own Barbie, hell be “success Barbie” or “International Travel Barbie’, be whatever Barbie your heart desires with no fear of what others say. One of our truths as people is that when we are young we often are afraid to “be seen” and this means to have confidence in our true selves. I am allowing the world to see me for the first time in my full confidence and I can now say that I was once where many young women are and I am embracing the beauty of the ride. Because there are a lot of young women out there who haven’t found their voice yet, as always I want to encourage everyone of you to believe in yourself and find the beauty in yourself without once thinking about how others may view you. You are all beautiful and unique in your own special way! You are your own designers of beauty, feel free to continually create your own individual standard of personal beauty and enjoy being BEAUTIFUL!

Don't let the summer sun blind you to this lesserknown skin cancer

Aug/Sept18 10

Most of us look forward to the balmy breezes and cheerful sunshine brought about by spring and summer, especially those of us living in climates where winter is long, gloomy and bitterly cold. Yet as we get our shorts, polo shirts and swimsuits out of storage, it's important to remind ourselves to stay sun smart and vigilant against skin cancer. Melanoma is a skin cancer many of us are familiar with. But have you heard of a skin cancer called cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC)? If not, you might be surprised to learn that CSCC is actually one of the most common skin cancers in the world - even more common than melanoma with an estimated 700,000 new cases diagnosed in the U.S. annually. CSCC can also be a deadly skin cancer. Every year, an estimated 7,000 people in the U.S. die of CSCC. And in the southern part of the U.S., the number of deaths from CSCC may actually be higher than deaths from melanoma. "The good news is that CSCC is usually highly treatable when detected early," notes Dr. Sunandana Chandra, a medical oncologist at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center Northwestern University. "That's why it is important to know about CSCC, so you can take the necessary precautions to protect yourself, know how to identify early signs of the cancer, and to understand your treatment options if it progresses. Being vigilant about your skin and reaching out to your doctor early with any concerns will allow you to consider more treatment options and possibly have better outcomes." So what do you need to know about CSCC? Here are three important tips: Take a Closer Look at Your Skin. Since early detection is key, it's important to know your skin and what to look for. As a precaution, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that adults check their skin monthly and schedule an annual dermatologist visit for a full-body skin exam. CSCC typically appears on sun-exposed parts of the body, such as the face, head and neck, and can take several forms, including rough or scaly red patches, raised lumps, open sores or wart-like growths. If you notice an unusual spot on your skin, be sure to schedule an appointment with your doctor immediately. Know the Stats, Know Your Risk. Exposure to harmful UV rays is the main cause of CSCC, but there are also certain groups of people who are at higher risk. Men are three times more likely than women to be diagnosed with CSCC, and the cancer tends to occur more frequently in elderly patients ages 65 and older. Also, those living in the southern parts of the U.S. should be particularly thoughtful about how much sun exposure they are getting. Involve Your Doctors and Ask the Right Questions. If you think you have CSCC, don't wait. Talk to your doctor right away. Often CSCC can be easily cured in its early stages with the help of a dermatologist or Mohs surgeon. However, if the CSCC progresses and grows bigger or spreads, a multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers may be needed to help assess the situation and work with you to figure out your options. This team may include your original dermatologist or Mohs surgeon plus additional physicians and surgeons from other specialties. Good questions to ask your healthcare team when it comes to CSCC include: What treatment options can I consider, and how do they work? What are the side effects of these treatments? What results can I expect from these treatment options? Are there any advances in CSCC treatment to be aware of? What other options may I consider (e.g., clinical trials)? If you think you or someone you know may have CSCC, contact a doctor and visit SkinCancer.org.

For most parents, their child's first steps or first words are incredible moments in their lives and a reason to celebrate. Well before their child is born they look forward to these milestones. Parents Mike and Lori Cecere looked forward to watching their son Weston crawl. Most babies learn between 6 and 10 months old; however, as the weeks passed and Weston still had not hit this milestone, the Ceceres grew increasingly worried. Eventually, they went to a specialist. Weston was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome when he was 15 months old. A rare genetic brain disorder, Angelman syndrome affects between 1 in 12,000 to 20,000 people, and is characterized by delayed development, cognitive disability, severe speech and sleep impairments, and problems with movement and balance. At the time of Weston's diagnosis, those common milestones seemed distant, maybe even impossible. His parents were told he would never be able to walk, and things that may seem insignificant to most - something as simple as using a straw might be impossible for him. Yet despite the odds and the diagnosis, Weston learned how to walk. And though it took his siblings just nine months to learn how to use a straw, after five and a half years, Weston, too, was able to accomplish this task. For families impacted by Angelman syndrome, these are more than milestones; they are victories amidst lifelong challenges and emotional struggles.

Families find hope for rare genetic brain disorder Contributed by BPT

What is Angelman syndrome? A genetic disorder affecting the 15th chromosome, Angelman syndrome requires lifelong care for those who are diagnosed, beginning when very young. In most cases, the first signs of Angelman syndrome that parents notice are significant developmental delays such as a lack of crawling, lack of speech or - in some cases - seizures. Because these symptoms can be easily mistaken for other conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy and Prader-Willi syndrome, Angelman syndrome is frequently misdiagnosed. Those with Angelman syndrome are easily excitable, have short attention spans and exhibit a generally happy personality. They also don't sleep as long as people without the syndrome, rarely more than five hours at a time, which means family and caregivers struggle with sleep deprivation on a regular basis. One of the biggest challenges families face is in trying to control seizures. It's hard to know just what will trigger a seizure, which can become a source of constant anxiety. What treatments are available? One of the first geneticists the Cecere family saw said that the best thing for Weston to do would be to play with other kids. With a neighborhood full of friends, that's just what they did. It was not a cure, but combined with love and expert treatment, it helped tremendously. While there is currently no cure for Angelman syndrome, researchers are working on medicines to target specific aspects of the disorder. For example, therapies that could help with balance and coordination could help someone walk further on his or her own. For the Cecere family, a therapy that helps Weston achieve even more small victories - like taking an extra few steps or being able to point - could have a major impact on how he interacts with his world. It's these small changes that can have a big impact and open doors for children like Weston to do the things many thought they would never do. Sponsored by Ovid Therapeutics.

Aug/Sept18 16

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder then if I behold what I see then isn’t it up to me to say what is beautiful? When you look in the mirror that image you see staring back at you is what counts the most. It is up to you to decide what and how you define your beauty. What you love about yourself is okay if no one else does. Beauty should exuded from the inside out. If you are beautiful inside it cant help but to show on the outside. Beauty goes way beyond looks. I love to wear makeup and dress up but I am very grateful that I don’t need those things to feel beautiful. Putting on makeup actually compliments my personality. I dare you to get naked and stand in front of your mirror. Take a really hard and long look at yourself. I dare you to find something you love about yourself. If there is something that you don’t like then find a way to change or fix it. If you are not able to do that then ask yourself if what you are wanting to change is a result of what someone has suggested that you change or what you want to change is something that you desire to change for you. So many times we often look at ourselves and find things to criticize instead of finding things to praise. Self affirmations are real and they can make all the difference in your life. Once you know who you are and what you are supposed to be you will have less time to focus on what you are not or what you don’t have. Always keep things in it’s proper perspective. Most of the people that the media portrays as having the “PERFECT” body isn’t always obtainable for the ordinary average everyday person. We are so busy focusing on wanting that beach body or having those six pack abs that we fail to realize that people in the media have a certain image to uphold and obtain. I wouldn’t wish that kind of pressure on anyone. Can you imagine having to look a certain way all of the time to prevent body shaming or loose some of your followers? I don’t know about you but I like to see people being real.

cheakwoolfolk.com

I will not lie and say that I never wanted plastic surgery. Of course I want a bigger butt, bigger breast, and a flatter stomach. The older I get the less I care. The human anatomy shows that our bodies are going to change and things are going droop or drop. Your vision is going to change and your hearing will not be as clear. Embrace the change and the change will embrace you. Know that it is okay that you don’t look like someone else as a matter of fact take that as a blessing. You are a designer original and there is no one else in the world like you. Let no one shame you for not looking like a super model or having a biggerchest or having that muscular body. You only get one body and one life so make the best of it. Regardless, always do what makes you happy. Self love starts with you. In order to show or be love you have to loveyourself first. Remember to CREATE YOUR OWN BEAUTY...what is beautiful to you is beautiful on you. Wear your beauty with your head held high. Adjust your crowns kings and queens in such a way that your exuberant beauty will be what sets you apart from everyone else. Your beauty is strength, courage, heart, confidence, and is meant to set the world on fire. Be unique...Be you...Be Beautiful! Korea L. The warmer-weather months are the ideal time to get outdoors, stay active and focus on your health goals. Staying fit and eating healthy can come easy when you keep a few simple tips in mind.

Savvy summer fitness and nutrition tips cheakwoolfolk.com

Explore Mother Nature If the gym is getting boring or just isn't your style, it's time to find inspiration outdoors. Warmer months are when Mother Nature truly shines and it's the perfect opportunity to get outside and get active. Hike local parks, visit a beach and take a paddleboard class, rent a kayak with a friend and explore a regional river - the opportunities are endless. "You might find inspiration in your own backyard by enjoying playful stuff you used to do as a kid like jump rope, hopscotch, hula hoop or play on the swing set," says registered dietitian and nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner. "Kid stuff can burn lots of calories, plus it adds fun and fuels your spirit." Avoid mid-day heat During hot weather, be aware of peak heat periods. Typically, this is in the afternoon, generally between noon and 5 p.m. It's wise to spend time outdoors earlier in the morning or later after dinner so that you don't have to worry about heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion. Eat a wholesome breakfast Before heading out for a morning adventure, don't forgo the most important meal of the day: breakfast. Give your body the fuel it needs so you can enjoy your activities to the fullest.

ckwmag.info CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

Aug/Sept18 22

"Enjoy fresh fruit, whole grain toast and eggs," suggests Blatner. "Though not all eggs are created equal, look for Eggland's Best eggs since they are the only eggs with superior nutritional benefits like six times more vitamin D, 25 percent less saturated fat and ten times more vitamin E than ordinary eggs." Prepare for the sun Longer days bring more sunshine, and while those rays can be amazing for getting outdoors, it's important to adopt sun-safe practices. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, everyone should use sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB rays), is SPF 30 or higher and is water resistant. Additionally, consider wearing sunglasses and a hat to protect the face and eyes. Drink up and snack smart Your body sweats as a way to keep cool. During warm weather this can happen quickly, especially if you are working out or being active outdoors. Always keep a bottle of water close by and drink up regularly. Some people even set a reminder on their phone. "And don't think that plain water is the only way to stay hydrated in the summer," says Blatner. "You can also get hydrated with unsweetened sun tea, water infused with fruit, or by actually eating water-rich fruits such as watermelon and pineapple." Visit the local farmers market Want a healthy eating tip from a professional chef? "Seek out fresh fare from your local farmers market and enjoy all the flavors of the season," says Chef Jonathan Poyourow, a registered and licensed dietitian, and assistant professor at Johnson & Wales University's College of Culinary Arts. "Choose produce in a multitude of colors so you can enjoy a bounty of flavors and get a variety of vitamins and nutrients. For instance, green broccoli is a good source of fiber and carotenoids while yellow peppers are high in vitamin C."

cheakwoolfolk.com

Next, try some chef-approved recipes to tempt your taste buds. For example, this tasty sheet pan recipe can be customized by using the local fare you just picked up at the market. Rainbow Sheet Pan Veggies with Eggs Yield: 6 servings Ingredients: 6 Eggland's Best Eggs (Large) 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon sea salt 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 orange bell pepper 1 red bell pepper 1 cup grape tomatoes 1 cup radishes, halved 2 carrots, peeled 1 yellow pepper 1 yellow squash 1 cup broccoli florets 1 zucchini 1 cup radicchio, chopped Directions: Preheat oven to 400 F. While the oven is preheating, chop all of the vegetables into bite-size pieces to ensure they will roast quickly and evenly in the oven. Arrange the chopped vegetables in a single layer onto the sheet pan in rainbow order: red bell pepper, grape tomatoes, radishes, carrots, orange bell pepper, yellow squash, yellow bell pepper, broccoli, zucchini, radicchio. Drizzle the olive oil over the vegetables and sprinkle the salt, pepper and oregano evenly on top. Using your hands, lightly toss the vegetables on the sheet pan while keeping the rainbow order intact until they are all evenly coated. Place the sheet pan in the oven and roast for 15 minutes or until all vegetables are slightly tender. Remove baking sheet from oven but leave oven on. Create room throughout the sheet pan for six eggs and then crack the eggs over the vegetables. Return sheet pan to oven and bake until whites are set and yolks are still runny, about 10 minutes. Remove from oven and scoop vegetables and one egg into bowl or on top of your choice of rice, quinoa or greens.

Self-Care Tips with Angel! Sometimes You Have to Save Yourself In a society that praises the Independent Woman, who juggles the bills, household, keeps her head on straight while balancing a baby on her hip. We have yet to reveal those long nights through tears and those war wounds she shoves under the rug. Nor how she desires someone to come and share this load on the journey called life, as she throws on her cape to save the world deep down she wants to be saved. I say that because, that was me. A single mother of three working two jobs, in school, chasing my dream but tired. On the outside, I looked together while mentally and emotionally I was falling apart. I didn’t need any clinical diagnosis to realize depression was creeping in. Depression is a real issue that seems to be taboo to discuss. So many of us are barely holding on. Moving through day to day life suffering in silence. This is to share. According to an article publish by the World Health Organization in 2015, Women are more likely to be depressed than men as a matter of fact, it’s the second leading cause of death for people between the ages 15-29. I finally accepted and recognized that Prince Charming wasn’t going to whisk in and save me. I had to dig deep and fight to save myself. Here are a few things that helped me save myself.

1. Devote an hour within the day to focus on self (a shower, going to get my nails done, a solo lunch date or even a massage). 2. Create a curfew to unplug from emails, phone and TV. 3. Create daily positive affirmations (Speaking my desires & hopes into existence). 4. Journaling at least five things I am grateful for. (Adapting an attitude of gratitude) 5. Break free from the daily routine and do something different.

The ugly truth is even the strong battle through tough times and face depression. It’s not weak to seek help if necessary, asking for help is a form of self-love. Because we all struggle with unspoken storms. The key is P.U.S.H (Pray. Until. Something. Happens) through. All storms pass.

Beauty Enhancements It’s 2018, and many beauty bosses are transitioning from the lash strips and upgrading to lash extensions as the go to beauty enhancement. I am so tired of seeing my queens aiding in the destruction of their natural lash by using hair glue on strips and clusters. Put down the glue Sis, I’m here to shed some light on the pros and cons to lash extension. (I know from personal experience; my lashes have completely fallen out from a failed attempt with hair glue). I am here to save your lashes. You can thank me later! cheakwoolfolk.com

Lash extensions are applied to each individual lash, they enhance the appearance to your natural lashes and make them appear at least, 30-50 % thicker and lengthen them by 20-50 %. If you are allergic to fur, acrylic, latex or certain glues ask your lash tech what type of lashes are being applied to avoid allergic reaction later. The time it takes to apply a full set of lash extension can range from 2 - 2.5 hours so be sure you have some time to spare. Also, lash extension require maintenance just as your hair, skin and nails do. In between sets you will need to visit your tech for fill- ins every 2-4 weeks. However, with proper care your lashes will last and enhance your look continuously. The average price for extensions range from $100 to $150 for a full set however, despite the price and maintenance they are worth the investment. I personally am a fan of full lash extension application.

UNDERSTANDING OVULATION AND THE BEST DAYS TO CONCEIVE PRESENTED BY BPT

Many women trying to conceive are confused about their period, the 28-day cycle and when they're most likely to get pregnant. When a couple is planning to have a baby, understanding the 28-day cycle can mean the difference between success and disappointment, says Gloria Richard-Davis, MD, Ob/Gyn, fertility specialist and author of Planning Parenthood. Timing is a critical factor when you're trying to get pregnant. As more and more women are waiting to conceive until later in life, we have seen an uptick in fertility tracking technologies - from apps to wearables that help women pinpoint their most fertile days. However, it's important to supplement an app or fertility monitor with simple ovulation tests to accurately identify your fertile days.

ckwmag.info CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

Aug/Sept18 32

Each month, the body prepares for ovulation, or the release of an egg from the ovaries. The cycle begins on the first day of menstruation and serves as a detox to dispose of old uterine lining and make way for the next cycle. Day one, the first day of menstrual bleeding or spotting, represents a new opportunity to conceive. Days eleven-sixteen are the optimal time to kick-start baby-making efforts, as ovulation is nearing. A simple at-home ovulation predictor kit like First Response Ovulation Test Kit will identify your two most fertile days by pinpointing a surge in the luteinizing hormone (LH) that triggers ovulation. Women can maximize their chances by having sex within 24-36 hours after detecting this luteinizing hormone (LH) surge. If a sperm successfully fertilizes the egg, conception occurs. The lining of the uterus thickens between day seventeen and twenty-four, and if the egg and sperm have successfully met, the fertilized egg will soon implant or attach to the uterine lining (endometrium). The end of the cycle is near, and PMS symptoms may present themselves if pregnancy has not occurred, as progesterone peaks around day twenty-one or twenty-two. If you think you might be pregnant, but haven't missed your period yet, try the First Response Triple Check Pregnancy Test Kit. It includes one Early Result Pregnancy Test that can let you know six days before your missed period, a Digital Pregnancy Test for women who like to see a yes/no answer, and a Rapid Result Pregnancy Test to take on the day of your missed period or anytime after. Other important considerations to keep in mind when trying to conceive include: * Keeping a healthy, well-balanced diet and practicing stress relief. * Prenatal vitamins with sufficient folic acid like prescription OB Complete are critical even before trying to conceive to ensure a healthy pregnancy journey for both mom and baby. * Vaginal dryness is twice as common in women who are trying to conceive due to the stress of 'sex on demand.' Traditional lubricants can harm sperm motility, which is why using a fertility-friendly lubricant like Pre-Seed is crucial, as it encourages sperm to swim freely and meet an egg. Don't guess at your fertile window when it's so easy to identify the best time to conceive. Every woman is born with millions of immature eggs, but the quantity and quality of remaining eggs, known as the ovarian reserve, decreases. If you're not able to get pregnant, your ovarian reserve may be low. Tracking ovulation can be challenging as well, especially if your menstrual cycle is irregular. Remember to note your cycle and its symptoms so you can discuss concerns with your medical provider and schedule a preconception checkup.

CLASSIC CARDIGAN? 5 TIPS FOR CARING FOR YOUR VINTAGE WARDROBE Vintage nation: 5 care tips for clothing from the pastÂ

As environmentally aware Americans join the movement to reduce, reuse and recycle, many are turning to the past to find unique, well-made vintage pieces to complement their wardrobes. The hunt for great vintage wear has become so popular that we're spending some $4 billion annually on such fun finds, reports the Huffington Post. "For many it offers individuality, affordability, and that feel-good moment of rescuing an item from the landfill and reducing the environmental footprint," writes Kate Black in that article. "This also makes it the retail unicorn, that rare occasion when a single store can appeal to stylish fashionistas, value-conscious consumers and passionate environmentalists." Building a distinctive, one-of-a-kind vintage wardrobe can be fun and easy once you learn a few guidelines for finding and caring for your collection. LG Electronics and luxury vintage clothing purveyor What Goes Around Comes Around recently partnered to bring the LG LaundROO Lounge and Vintage Clothing Swap to Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee. Festival-goers were invited to peruse 3,000 pieces of vintage gear and exchanged their own clothes for a new look. The swapped pieces were then washed in LG washers and dryers onsite and put back into the closet for another attendee to choose. If LG and What Goes Around Comes Around can handle the danced-in duds of 60,000 festival-goers, they can definitely help you take care of your vintage finds! Co-founder and chief creative officer at What Goes Around Comes Around, Gerard Maione, shares these tips to best maintain your vintage and hard-to-care-for pieces so you can keep festival style season going all year round: 1. Aim for versatility with fabrics such as cashmere and silk that can be easily layered to work well through every season. Look for well-cut pieces that can transition from day to night with simple shifts in accessories.

cheakwoolfolk.com

2. Choose quality over quantity. Whether you're opting for vintage or new clothing, pieces featuring highquality fabrics and construction will stand the test of time - as long as they're well treated. 3. Read and carefully follow cleaning recommendations, ensuring that you're using appropriately gentle wash cycle or steam options. Making that process easier than ever is the LG TWINWash washing machine with SideKick pedestal washer, dryer and LG Styler offered by LG Electronics, a package Maione calls "the ultimate laundry room." Its ultra-convenient design features a front loader stacked onto a pull-out wash compartment, allowing you to simultaneously run one cycle for your heavier items and one for your specialty items such as delicate vintage pieces. 4. Narrow wire hangers can create wrinkles, bumps and bulges in aged, delicate fabrics. Instead, choose wider and/or padded hanger styles that better distribute the weight of each garment. Vintage fashionistas often prefer heavy-duty wooden hangers, while others swear by the velvet-covered varieties that keep silky fabrics from slipping off. For pants and skirts, seek out specially designed hangers that ward off unnecessary creases. 5. Care for your treasured vintage items between wearings by folding sweaters onto shelves or in drawers, storing handbags and shoes in dust bags, then freshening items up between cleanings. The LG Styler steam clothing care system makes it effortless, using chemical-free steam-based cycles that can handle anything from sanitizing and removing allergens to eliminating odors and reducing wrinkles. Vintage clothing can be a unique, environmentally friendly and cost-efficient means to add flair to your wardrobe. Know how to care for your vintage pieces so you will continue to enjoy the past far into the future.

YOUR NEXT EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURE:

Aug/Sept18 56

WESTERN AUSTRALIA'S NINGALOO REEF BPT Have you ever heard of Australia's other reef? A place where the red and orange hues of Australia's iconic outback meet white sand beaches and turquoise blue water, where you can walk off the shore and instantly experience pristine coral reef during a special drift snorkel, and where the best marine encounters in the world are part of everyday life. Western Australia's Ningaloo Reef, located along the stunning Coral Coast, is truly one of the region's best-kept secrets and one of those stunning spots you must experience for yourself. Jump on a two-hour flight from Perth or an extraordinary 750-mile road trip, pull on your snorkel gear and step into the bluest waters of the Indian Ocean. From here, you only need to swim a couple of meters before you're floating over the UNESCO World Heritage-listed coral gardens of one of the largest wildlife-rich reefs on the planet. What sets the Ningaloo Reef apart is the fact that there's nowhere else on Earth where you can access a large and beautiful coral reef as easily as this. The abundance and variety of marine life indicates the health of the reef and at Oyster Stacks or Turquoise Bay - a few of the locals' favorite spots - you can catch a ride on the gentle current to view some of the 200+ varieties of coral and more than 500 species of fish that call Ningaloo Reef home. On any given day you may come across schools of tropical fish, green turtles, dolphins and sting rays. Scuba divers can also visit the Exmouth Navy Pier, best described as an "aquarium without glass" and considered one of the best shore dives in the world. It's an underwater photographer's dream renowned for its quantity and array of quality marine life.

cheakwoolfolk.com

Swim with the biggest fish in the sea Beyond the coral reefs, Ningaloo is one of the only places in the world where whale sharks appear annually, and from March through August charter companies take visitors to the back of the reef where they literally swim side-by-side with these majestic gentle giants. The region has the most consistent congregation of whale sharks, which makes for incredible swims. With no more than ten people in the open water at one time, these intimate and awe-inspiring tours are conducted in an eco-minded, sustainable manner to minimize disturbance as much as possible. During the day at sea, you may also spot manta rays, turtles, and dugongs feasting on the world's largest seagrass meadows. Not only can visitors dive with whale sharks, but between August and October they can swim with humpback whales, too. Previously endangered, humpback whale numbers have steadily recovered and now an estimated 30,000 migrate along the coast each year making Western Australia's the largest population in the world. Adventures above water Along the shores and on land there's plenty to do, taste and experience to make your escape exciting and unforgettable. A gentle one-hour cruise on the still waters of Yardie Creek in Cape Range National Park is the best way to see the striking colors and the many wild inhabitants of this ancient red limestone gorge, including rare black-footed wallabies, euros, red kangaroos and birds. Active travelers can also hike through the Cape Range National Park, taking in the rocky gorges carved by ancient flowing rivers. For a truly secluded experience, spend a night or two glamping under the stars in luxury safari tents at Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef where the outback meets the sea. Here, days are filled with guided gorge walks, fishing, kayaking, relaxing and snorkeling. The chef serves inspired gourmet meals, from seafood caught that day off the reef to local fare, allinclusive with Margaret River wines and locally distilled spirits. It's the only place to stay in the region where you can dive right into the reef simply from the shore. Alternatively, travelers can enjoy air-conditioned resort-style accommodations at Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort, offering comfortable suites with local artistry, a fantastic restaurant and refreshing swimming pool overlooking the stunning turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Plan your ultimate adventure To make the most of your trip, don't forget to stop at the other UNESCO World Heritagelisted area - Shark Bay - less than a day's drive from Ningaloo. Shark Bay is another marine hotspot, best known for the wild dolphins of Monkey Mia, where they swim right up to the shore and play by your feet. Visitors can also take a walk and wonder at Shell Beach, one of only two beaches on Earth made of billions of tiny shells from just one species. Western Australia's Coral Coast is one of the rare places on the planet where you can easily access such an incredible diversity of marine life in its natural environment, so close to the shore. What are the three basic needs of human life? Some might answer food, water, or shelter. Maybe I should say the three spiritual basic needs of human beings? For the answer I looked in the spiritual authority book, the Bible. In Mark 12:30-31 Jesus answers the question of which commandment was the greatest. Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no commandment greater than these. Now what do I pull from these verses as it relates to us. 1. Our first command is to love God with all that we are, heart, body, mind, soul, and spirit. In order for us to be content, satisfied, in other words happy, we need an intimate relationship with God. 2. Our second command is to love others as we do ourselves. We need to have intimate relationships with others. 3. Our third command is to love self.

Aug/Sept18 62

You would think that loving self is an easy command. But it is not. You may be surprised to know that many people find themselves unable to love. They do not love themselves therefore they are unable to love others. There is some emotional pain within them that blocks their ability to love. There are many reasons for this emotional pain, some to complex to write about in this article. There are fears, anxieties, and anger within many of them. These same people may be smiling on the outside all the while feeling angst on the inside. Angst is a kind of undefinable anxiety one feels on the inside. One of our past presidents, Abraham Lincoln, said, “most people are about as happy as they choose to be.” Many professionals who deal with the psychology, physiology, anatomy, mentality, and spirituality of the human mind agree that this is true. They also agree that the ability to maintain a sense of inner peace and joy eludes them. But they also agree that all human beings can have inner peace and joy if they choose it and follow the right path to achieve it. It boggles the mind of many that anyone would choose depression and unhappiness over joy and happiness. Some do so because they are convinced there is no other way. Some want happiness and joy but seek it in the wrong places.

cheakwoolfolk.com

Many people seek happiness in material things, physical relationships, jobs and promotions only to find themselves deep in unfulfillment. Some have everything the world has to offer, riches and celebrity only to end their lives by suicide. And all of us on the outside looking in wonder how could this happen? The answer to this question is not simple. Our minds and emotions are a very complex and forceful system. A great many professional people, accomplished in their own fields still struggle with a fear of failure, and are overly self-critical. Doctors who entered medicine because of their compassion for the suffering of others might find that because of the rigorous demands on their time and families leads to “burn-out or a loss of human compassion. The motives behind depression vary from person to person. Many times, depression is motivated by repressed anger, anger towards self, parents, friends, and even God. I worked with a woman who was employed in an office setting as an administrative assistant to one of the managers. The position required diplomacy and excellent communication skills. Many people complained about her because her behavior was so erratic. She could be heard yelling in the corridor when something happened that she didn’t like. After several sessions it became apparent that she was very angry. A few years prior to our visits her mother had died after she arrived at work one morning. She was angry at herself because she believed she should have realized her mother was not well that morning. And she was angry because her mother had died alone. She was angry at God because He had not healed her mother. She had already lost her sister and she was now alone. She was pretty much angry at everybody. My first challenge was to get her to see how self-destructive her behavior was. This had been her go to emotion for several years. It is hard to unlearn a habit, but it is possible. I suspected that she had observed temper tantrums from adults when she was young. It is always easier to continue in a habit than it is to change it.

ckwmag.info CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

Aug/Sept18 64

She had a desire to get an increase in her salary. The human resource officer came to audit her position to determine if reclassification and increase in salary was appropriate for her. She came to see me after she completed the audit. She was sure things went well but they did not. She spent the entire time complaining about other workers and none discussing what value she brought to her position. Her request for a reclassification and increased salary was denied. She was able to see how self-destructive her behavior had been. Taking small steps to change she was able to conquer her behavior. No therapist, psychiatrist, life coach, counselor or any other professional can force another person to change. However, when God created man he gave us all free will. And we can choose to change. And I believe that there is a right path to happiness and there is no magic pill. Depression has been with us since the beginning of life. In Genesis 4:6-7 the Lord questions Cain about why he is downcast. He continues by telling Cain if he did what was right he would be accepted. If he did not do what was right sin was crouching at the door. He tells Cain that sin wanted to overtake him, but he must resist. Cain was depressed because of jealousy. His jealousy (sin) overtook him and he killed his brother. Depression is very common in this day and time. It is also an avoidable condition because we can all choose to be happy. Let me say here that I am not speaking about any mental condition that may require medication. I am speaking about a long term feeling of sadness and an inability to move forward. Sometimes these feelings are brought on by guilt and bitterness. People sometimes feel a need to punish themselves because of a failure. Such was the case with Cain. He was jealous, then bitter, followed by guilt. It is not our job to condemn ourselves. Only God is supposed to judge us. God wants us to rest in Him and the power of His might. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 Paul tells us that when we become Christians we are a new creation and the old being is gone. It does not mean that we become perfect and sinless. But it does mean that our sins are forgiven past, present, and future. In professing Christ as our Savior, we cover a monument of conditions.

cheakwoolfolk.com

Continual study of God’s word ensures a continual growth of spirituality and emotional maturity. God created in us both natural and emotional needs i.e. food, water, sex, love, comfort, aggression, security, power, and selfworth. And Satan uses these same needs to tempt us to sin. But God clearly states in Philippians 4:19 that He and He alone will supply all our needs. When we allow others to convince us that a Christian life is only laws and rules that will rob us of our ability to enjoy life is when our trouble starts. God is gracious and merciful, and it is not His desire to punish us for making mistakes. He already knows we will make mistakes. God does not expect us to be perfect. He knows we will fail. But some people put so much pressure on themselves to achieve perfectly every time that they find themselves knee deep in depression. People like this need to learn how to set appropriate goals and rewards for themselves. There are two verses in the Bible that speak to how beneficial a relationship with God can be. Matthew 4:4 says that man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. We do not survive by food alone. Food is a physical need, but life includes a spiritual need. In John 6:63 Christ tells that it is the Spirit that gives life and the flesh counts for nothing. He says the words that He has spoken to us are full of both Spirit and life. In 2 Kings 18:6 Hezekiah held fast to the Lord and did not stop following Him. He kept the commands the Lord had given Moses. And in verse 7 we are told that God was with him and he was successful in whatever he undertook. These verses indicate a close relationship with God is necessary for a successful and purposeful life. It implies that one most seek out God and long for a friendship with Him. There is an element of enjoyment and a desire to spend time with Him. It should be as any other relationship with any other friend.

If you choose to be happy, here are few steps you can take on your journey: 1. Acknowledge any anger you have towards yourself and others. 2. Forgive anyone who has harmed you. 3. Study God’s word daily for spiritual strength. 4. Develop a strong prayer life. 5. Stop allowing others to determine your self-worth. 6. Develop friendships with others who are like-minded 7. Fellowship with those who can inspire and encourage you. 8. Allow yourself to fail. 9. Celebrate your accomplishments. 10. Love God, love yourself, and love others.

Mentoring: Succeeding By Asking for Help Mentoring starts at birth when we begin learning from our parents and seeking help with things we don’t understand. They use what they know to mentor us into adulthood in hopes that we will become productive members of society with the capacity to walk on our own. As we progress in life, we go from mentee to mentor to younger siblings and later, to children of our own.

Gay 's P SA Written by Gay L. Polk-Payton

In relationships, women who are married sometimes appreciate the concept whereby a man can lead. But a real man does not try to control everything. He understands the importance of lovingly harnessing his wife’s strengths to undergird him as he leads. For example, I am a lawyer and a judge. It would be counterproductive for my husband to read and attempt to interpret legal documents just because he is the “head of the household” when he has a lawyer in bed with him. In business relationships, clear understanding of mentorship is an integral part of being a servant leader and effective team building. Whether you are the mentor or mentee, the ability or inability that balance this sometimes-delicate dynamic can potentially make or break the outcome of projects and the success of your enterprise.

Effective mentorship means taking what you have and disseminating information in a way that can be clearly understood while appreciating the strengths of your mentees, so their expertise and abilities will strengthen the company overall. The role of the mentee is to understand their assignment while allowing themselves to be used in increasing productivity while being open to role shifting and expansion. I love football and missed assignments on the football field has cost many teams to lose a game they seemed destined to win. The words “That ain’t my job” sometimes tend to prevent people who have the potential to learn and grow lose opportunities to advance. In summary, mentorship is a conglomerate of advice, motivation, training, goal setting, support coaching and direction that when properly applied, leads to success!

Anyway, this has been a public service announcement. #thatisall #gayspsa #AstroTurf #attractivenuisance #gaypolkpayton #gaypolkpaytonwhite

Landmark Alzheimer's Study Urgently Seeks African American Volunteers

Aug/Sept18 72

Study focuses on early detection of Alzheimer's disease and tracking it over time African Americans are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's disease (Family Features) More than 5 million Americans suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and scientists expect this number to triple by 2050. Experts say that African Americans are two to three times more likely than white Americans to develop the disease. A momentous scientific study focused on early detection of Alzheimer's disease, and tracking it over time, seeks healthy volunteers without memory problems, as well as people who have mild memory problems, and those who have been diagnosed with mild dementia due to Alzheimer's disease. The prestigious Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative - or ADNI - funded by the National Institutes of Health, is one of the largest and longest running Alzheimer's disease trials in history. Now in the third phase of trials, researchers are studying how quickly things like reasoning and the ability to perform certain functions change in the aging brain. Researchers need to better understand the disease progression in order to speed the pace of discovery in the race to prevent, treat and cure Alzheimer's disease. "It is extremely important that more African Americans get involved in the fight against Alzheimer's disease, which affects nearly all of us in some way," said Michael Weiner, MD, principal investigator of the study. "We need to know why and how Alzheimer's disease progresses in African Americans in order to discover new treatments that could significantly improve the way we treat it in the future." The study uses state-of-the-art imaging to monitor brain levels of two proteins called tau and amyloid, both of which are significant indicators of Alzheimer's disease. Researchers track cognitive function through computer tests at home and in a doctor's office, which includes measuring changes in one's ability to handle money, a common warning sign of the disease. cheakwoolfolk.com

"One of the biggest challenges researchers face is finding people to volunteer to take part in studies," said Weiner. "We can beat Alzheimer's, but we can't do it without volunteers." The ADNI Study needs 800 people to enroll in sites across the United States and in Canada. Researchers are looking for people between the ages of 55 and 90 who have normal thinking and memory function, as well as those who have mild memory problems and those who have been diagnosed with mild dementia due to Alzheimer's disease. No medication is involved. Potential study volunteers can learn more by visiting www.ADNI3.org or by calling 1888-2-ADNI-95 (1-888-223-6495).

How universities are revitalizing urban areas

Contributed by BPT

In the middle of the country, between two coasts and the two metropolises of New York and Los Angeles, is the friendlier, more mild-mannered version of the two: Chicago. One hundred years ago, the poet Carl Sandburg famously called Chicago the "hog butcher of the world," and the "nation's freight handler." The character of the city has changed with each decade, and throughout the years. Chicago has established itself as an educational hub, with world-class research universities, robust community colleges and ample opportunity for people to earn degrees and get ahead in life. A force of change During uncertain times, Chicago's colleges and universities have stood as a guiding light for the city, signaling hope, change and opportunity. In a city that has long had neighborhoods underserved and marked by economic hardship - one university has had a particularly strong impact on the community and the city as a whole: Saint Xavier University. For more than 170 years, a mission to serve the community and inspire future generations to succeed and make a difference has guided the university.

ckwmag.info CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

Aug/Sept18 76

As the city has changed, this core mission has adapted to serve students in the 21st century. Through the dedication of students, faculty and staff, the university has been acknowledged as a source of growth in the community in the following ways: * Ranked No. 4 in Illinois for helping underserved students overcome barriers to complete their bachelor's degrees, according to the Illinois Education Research Council's 2017 report. * Saint Xavier University has a stable and optimal student-to-faculty ratio of 14-to-1. * Two-thirds of Saint Xavier's student body are the first in their family to attend college. * As part of the university's mission, Saint Xavier directs academic programs and units to partner with local, national or international nonprofit, public, private or faith-based organizations to provide opportunities for engagement, scholarship or service/service learning for students, faculty and staff. Degrees that open doors While Chicago's universities and colleges are the pride of the city, the question on almost every parent's and incoming student's mind is: What will I get out of the financial investment? The School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Saint Xavier University offers top-ranked programs in the high-demand fields of nursing, speech pathology, exercise science and more. The job market for certified nurses is expected to grow by 16 percent during this decade. This combination of high-ranking programs in growing career fields has led U.S. News and World Report to call Saint Xavier one of the best-value schools for students. Saint Xavier University is a strong example of how universities are reviving the city of Chicago and opening doors for those who may have thought those doors were closed.

So often one can easily allow the thoughts of others to dictate, persuade, transform or plan a life that's not even theirs. It takes a strong appreciation for who you are, who you can and would like to become in order to prevent the persuasion of others to shape YOU as they feel. My goal is to NEVER forget who I am, where I came from and where I am capable of going. Reaching for the stars and beyond is in everyone's grasp, however, many will not soar to such heights due to listening to others and accepting their views. I encourage all to reach high, higher than the mere imagination can take you! Be the YOU that you are set apart to be. Always Remember "MY BEAUTY ISN'T YOURS TO CONFIRM!"

At CKW-Magazine we have been blessed to attend events that impact lives and The 2018 Support Tour was no exception. This event is an annual vegan cook off by prominent chefs aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles as well as changing the narrative that food can be healthy and still be tongue salivating delicious. This is a great way to expand awareness and to gain exposure for current vegans and for any and all wanting to explore the lifestyle. Cooking is life, because we all have to prepare ourselves a meal at some point in our journey. The event was held at Frederick’s Restaurant on Saturday June 24th and was hosted by media mogul Dawn Gee , who has constantly encouraged an entire community to seek healthier options and lifestyle choices.

The competitors: Chef Jerriel Bell of Frederick - Owner and operator of Frederick’s a wonderful sit-down restaurant that “Offers flavorful dishes that can’t be found anywhere else in West Louisville”, according to Langston Gaither, the centers Executive Director. Lake Landon - Owner and operator of Marinations Catering and the winner of the 2017 Diabetes Cook-Off Competition. Home of the $5 Dollar Deal Meal.

Rodney White - Co-Owner of the well known Super Chef Restaurants Although they have many specialties they have focused on the most important meal of the day. Focusing on intense flavors, vibrant palettes, great customer service, and creative presentations, SuperChef’s Breakfast & More will bring back excitement to the most important meal of the day. cheakwoolfolk.com

All of the chefs showed their pedigrees and did not disappoint. The competition was touch and go and it seemed to go back and forth as each culinary dish was tasted and shared among the judges. And the Winner is... Each chef set the bar high with their vegan dish but this year’s winner Jerriel Bell won over the mouths, taste buds and hearts of the room with an incredible vegan Ratatouille. The flavor was phenomenal and to be honest a mind changing dish. If you have had any negatives about going vegan a dish of this magnitude would alter your perception. The flavor was not one that the average minds equates with vegan or healthy. To make a long story short, the flavor was SINFULLY rich and delicious. Even though the venue was adjacent to a church the winners dish almost caused the tasters to require pray and forgiveness for such an indulgent dish. No one in the room was disappointed and Chef Bell changed many minds regarding the vegan options and lifestyle.

CHOLINE IS VITAL DURING PREGNANCY: BPT

HERE'S WERE TO GET IT

ckwmag.info CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

Aug/Sept18 96

Nutrition is critical to consider when you are pregnant. You want to support your changing body and satisfy your cravings, but you also want to help your growing baby thrive."Nutrients serve double duty during pregnancy because they support both mom and baby," said Dawn Jackson Blatner, registered dietitian nutritionist. "It's no secret pregnant women need additional nutrition, but we continue to learn more and more about nutrients that are important during this time. We already know things like Omega-3s and folic acid are significant for fetal development, but one nutrient we're now realizing is vital is choline. Choline is essential for a child's early brain development during pregnancy and even supports early brain health during infancy." A recent Cornell University study found that choline intake was particularly beneficial in the third trimester. Researchers found infants exposed to higher levels of maternal choline during this period had improved brain information processing speed. However, most people don't get enough choline in their diets and prenatal supplements often have little or no choline. "The problem is choline is not found in high quantities in most American foods," Blatner said. "Fortunately, there is one readily available option packed with choline: eggs. This is good news for moms-to-be seeking optimum nutrition during pregnancy and moms of infants transitioning to table foods as eggs can be a wonderful soft food for babies. Bonus: eggs also include significant levels of lutein, another powerful brain-building nutrient." Blatner cautions that when buying eggs, not all options are created equal. "Eggland's Best eggs have 25 percent less saturated fat, more than double the Omega-3s, 10 times more vitamin E, and more than double the amount of vitamin B12," Blatner said.

If you're pregnant or a mom of a young child, eating eggs regularly can help provide your family the essential nutrition to build brain health. More than just hard boiled, there are so many ways to prepare this versatile food. Get inspired by this Choline Breakfast Skillet, a delicious and healthy recipe to please the entire family.

Move cooked ground beef to a plate. Add remaining tablespoon butter to skillet if needed. Add onion, pepper, cauliflower and spices. Cook for 5 minutes, or until veggies are cooked through. Pour egg mixture over veggies and cook on medium-low heat for 3-5 minutes, until eggs are cooked through and scrambled. Add ground beef back into skillet and top with cheese. 4 SIMPLE TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE SUMMER PARTY

By: BPT

From outdoor cookouts to dinner parties on the patio, summer is the ideal season for entertaining guests. According to a recent survey commissioned by Delta Faucet, an overwhelming majority of homeowners (89 percent) plan to host at least one summer gathering this season. To ensure hosts are well prepared, below are tips on how to throw a simple summer soirée. Embellish with blossoms Subtle touches such as a fresh floral centerpiece help create a warm and welcoming ambiance. Design a floral arrangement with varying heights for the illusion of a fuller, larger table centerpiece without spending the time or money. As a bonus, create a foundation for your bouquet with foliage - like magnolia leaves - as the framework to provide a leafy contrast to your favorite flowers. Embrace seasonal ingredients Incorporate a blend of seasonal ingredients such as garden strawberries and fresh basil into gourmet treats for guests. Highlight fresh raspberries and lemon with a fruitinfused water or make a variety of berry and goat cheese toasts for sweet and savory flavors in every bite. For less time in the kitchen, goat cheese appetizers can be made in advance, so all you need to do the day-of is set and serve.

Stay spotless as you go To host your dream gathering without the stress, take advantage of the latest and greatest innovations. The Delta Charmaine Faucet with ShieldSpray Technology, available at The Home Depot, ensures quick and easy cleanup throughout the event. Designed with a concentrated jet stream within a protective sphere of water, ShieldSpray Technology powers off grit and grime while containing mess and splatter. This way you can clean as you go to avoid dish pile-up; spend less time soaking, scrubbing and shirt swapping; and have more time with your guests. Illuminate your space The perfect lighting can take your party décor to the next level, night or day. If you're planning an evening event, use string lights or scented candles around the space to create a cozy environment. For daytime gatherings, hang details tailored to your party décor like foliage garland, paper lanterns or colorful ribbon. For more design inspiration, visit DeltaFaucet.com/InspiredLiving.

4 Tips to Pull Together a Garden-to-Table Meal This Summer - The summer season is the best time for enjoying the garden you've worked so hard on throughout the spring months. As the flowers bloom, the herbs mature, and the vegetables ripen, it's time to celebrate all your hard work with a gardento-table meal.

Chris Lambton, garden and yard care expert, suggests letting the bounty of your yard inspire a summer party. "Invite some good friends and just let the blooms, herbs, produce, and outdoor setting guide you," Lambton says. "When you let your yard and garden take center stage, the possibilities really start to emerge." To help inspire you, Lambton shares his ideas on how to bring fullness and life to your garden-totable gathering. Play around with the party theme - like a pizza garden party What makes homemade pizza taste even better? When it's topped with fresh ingredients grown in your garden! Make it memorable by setting out personal-sized pizza dough so your friends can customize their own. Include plenty of garden goodies, like freshly-sliced tomatoes and eggplant, basil, and chopped peppers and onions, along with some artisanal meats and cheeses. Summit Knives are great for preparing this part of the meal, as their pinch grip design guides your hand into the ultimate cutting position each time. After adding the toppings, it's time to pop it in the oven. Use a tool like the Fiskars Non-scratch Kitchen Shears to cut the final result; its handle keeps your hand away from the hot dish and won't scratch the cutting surface. Refresh your summer cocktail recipe with garden herbs Herb-infused cocktails like juleps and mojitos are not only delicious, but the herb leaves also give off a refreshing fragrance when they're freshly snipped from your garden. Make sure to harvest their delicate leaves properly, so you can enjoy their bounty all summer long. The Non-stick Softgrip Micro-Tip Pruning Snips allow you to make precise trims on these smaller plants and they won't jam from sticky resin. If you have leftover leaves, don't toss them. Instead, use them to make herbinfused ice cubes; these can make cold summer drinks extra flavorful and refreshing. cheakwoolfolk.com

Adorn the table with beautiful blooms A centerpiece of colorful flowers is the perfect dĂŠcor accent to a garden-to-table meal. After choosing your favorite blooms, look around your yard for additional texture to add to your table that will command attention. Opt for slender branches with leaves, smaller blooms, berry stalks and grasses. Before placing the stems and branches in water, remove excess leaves and snip the bottoms at a 45degree angle to keep the bouquet looking fresh and healthy. Use a tool that is powerful enough to make a clean slice through tough woody stems, like a Fiskars pruner. Let nature inspire your table design A great party always features thoughtful design that sets the mood. Whatever you create, Lambton recommends using quality scissors like the iconic Fiskars scissors. They're comfortable to use and have blades that cut all the way to the tip, making crisp corner cuts and curves a cinch. To complete the look, add a homemade felt runner with a personalized design and colors that complement the outdoors and tie the table together. Try crafting customized place settings and trendy succulent napkin rings for a stylistic touch! Given the countless hours spent planning and planting your garden, it's equally important to enjoy the creations from your harvest. A freshly cooked garden-to-table meal and a summer-inspired tablescape are the perfect way to celebrate.

5 WAYS TO UP YOUR SUMMER GET-TOGETHER GAME Neighborhood cookouts are quintessentially summer, and totally fun. Because of that, it's no surprise that you may want to host them as often as possible, even every weekend if you could. But that introduces a new challenge - how do you keep your events fresh and interesting for your guests? Multiple events allow you the opportunity to switch things up and make your individual gettogethers more special. So with that in mind, here's a list of five ways you can up your game and take your cookouts to the next level this year. * Smoke your meat ... without the smoker. Not only is this possible, it's quite easy to do. Clean out a used metal can - the larger the better - and remove its label. Once the can is ready, fill it half full of wood chips - try apple wood for a more mild smokiness, or hickory for something a bit stronger. Cover the lid with foil and poke three to four holes, each about half an inch in size. Finally, place the can on your grill; you should start to see smoke rising from the holes in 10 minutes or less. Cook your meat around this can and keep the grill closed whenever possible to lock in that smoky flavor. * Refresh old classics. The cheeseburger is a summer event mainstay and one you don't need to sacrifice simply because you're trying to switch things up. Instead of abandoning the cheeseburger altogether, why not give it a distinctly new taste instead? Castello Burger Blue Cheese is conveniently sliced and made to melt on any burger. Its creamy and characteristically tangy notes of blue feature balanced sweet and salty undertones, making it a good match for everything from traditional beef burgers all the way to Portobello veggie burgers. And if crumbles are more your thing, the Castello Burger Blue Cheese Shaker will turn your traditional cheeseburger into a delicious crumble creation in no time. All you have to do is shake and enjoy.

** Theme your get-together. This one could mean different things to different groups, but determining the best theme for your guest list is half the fun. If your guests are well traveled, host an "around the world" party and ask each guest to bring a dish from a different country. Or try a nostalgic approach with a summer camp theme featuring rustic picnic spreads, a campfire and games. Find a theme that matches the interests of your group and everyone will be excited to jump on board. * Change up the menu. A cookout can have a very unique feel - and taste - simply by altering the side dishes you offer. This is a wonderful opportunity to show off your creative side and replace those same-old sides with new flavors like macaroni with blue cheese with bacon or baked sweet potatoes loaded with pulled barbecue chicken and Castello Extra Mature Cheddar cheese. You can find these and many more recipes on Castello's website, so take the time to explore and discover the perfect solution to tantalize your guests' taste buds. * Shift the timeline. Cookouts are generally seen as an afternoon event, but you can always switch things up by adjusting the timeline. Invite friends and family over for a brunch cookout to enjoy before spending the day at the beach or ball game. Think pancakes, bacon and eggs on the grill using a cast-iron skillet, fresh squeezed orange juice and frozen melon balls for cooling down. Mix it up and your group is sure to appreciate the change. The sooner you plan, the sooner you can celebrate No matter the theme, time or menu for your event, a little planning goes a long way, so don't delay. Your next-level summer get-together is just waiting for you to bring it to life, and once you finish your first cookout, there will be no stopping you from planning your second ... and third ... and ... more! cheakwoolfolk.com

Chocolate pairings: Innovative entertaining with a sweet twist

Aug/Sept18 116

Whether a fancy five-course social event, a laid-back barbecue or a progressive dinner party, what separates average from impressive entertaining is innovative and original ideas. One way to surely catch the attention of your guests while tempting their taste buds is to feature chocolate pairings in your entertaining itinerary. Fine chocolates add decadence to any event, but they are relatable and broadly enjoyed. Chocolate platters have replaced cheese platters at soirees, but what's really on trend for 2018 is chocolate pairings. This interactive offering is a conversation starter that will delight guests the perfect way to conclude a meal with friends or family. While the idea of chocolate pairings might seem complex, it's actually quite simple. These tips from the expert chefs who create Kohler Original Recipe Chocolates will make it virtually effortless to pair fine chocolates with beer, wine and spirits so you can impress guests at your next event. Offer an array of flavors To ensure you have something for all guests no matter their preferences, opt for a variety of chocolates. Selections from the white, milk and dark chocolate categories offer an array of flavors. Some guests may gravitate to one over others, while other guests may choose to sample all three varieties. Suggest sampling from light to dark to balance the palate. Pairing 1 suggestion: White chocolate White chocolate is sweet and buttery, integrated into numerous types of confections, many of which feature fruit. The Kohler Cranberry Terrapin showcases cranberries and white chocolate with its signature smoky caramel. Cranberry and white chocolate are delicate flavors and this piece is crafted so that those flavors balance well and are not overpowered by the smokiness of the caramel. With that in mind, consider serving with a a stout beer that will bring out that buttery goodness. If selecting a wine pairing, opt for a zinfandel or another variety that won't overpower those delicate flavors. Spirits can be a nice pairing addition, too. A classic bourbon complements the smoky caramel perfectly. cheakwoolfolk.com

ckwmag.info CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

Aug/Sept18 118

Pairing 2 suggestion: Milk chocolate Americans adore milk chocolate and expert chocolatiers can transform this delight into virtually endless tempting flavors. The Kohler Butterscotch Hop is one such example. The smooth, creamy butterscotch filling is enhanced by a custom blend of premium chocolate to elevate this flavor combination. It's velvety on the tongue with a light finish, plus the beautiful mold impresses the eye. Milk chocolate is smooth and sweet, and drink pairings should complement that element without overwhelming. A light crisp beer or a refreshing chardonnay brings out the buttery undertones of silkysmooth milk chocolate. If you decide to serve butterscotch, it's sure to be unique as it's a pretty rare find in the chocolate world. A honey whiskey is the perfect pair for butterscotch chocolates. Pairing 3 suggestion: Dark chocolate Rich and undeniably decadent, dark chocolate is the ideal final pairing to offer guests. The flavors of coffee and dark chocolate are often fused together as they mingle together well. For example, the Kohler CaffĂŠ and Cream has dark chocolate coffee ganache with a layer of creamy mascarpone in a dark chocolate shell. This multi-layer chocolate is meticulously crafted and offers a burst of satisfying richness. A bold, rich beer or heavy ale matches dark chocolate well. A tawny port that isn't too fruity can be a nice complement to coffee flavors while bringing out the dark chocolate elements. Finally, a sweeter bourbon with a smoky finish pairs nicely with the dark chocolate, which in turn brings out the barrel notes of the spirit.

cheakwoolfolk.com

Serving You can serve chocolate pairings in a variety of ways. If you prefer to set up a beautiful buffet, you can display chocolates on a platter and place drink pairings nearby, each labeled appropriately. Guests can help themselves at their leisure. You may also opt to serve guests by bringing out each pairing one by one and offering guests their choice of beverage to pair with the featured chocolate. No matter how you choose to serve, it's bound to be a memorable moment at a fantastic event.

Grilling makes summer meals a snap

BYÂ BPT

It's summertime, and temperatures are on the rise. Whether relaxing at the pool, cheering for a favorite team or just hanging out with family and friends, keeping cool is at the top of the list. 4 DIY ideas for

BPT

upcycling common household items Crafting is a wonderful way to relieve stress and express your creative side - and fortunately, you don't have to be a master craftsman - or spend a fortune on materials - to have fun and enjoy the benefits. "A great way to get into crafting is by 'upcycling' - bringing new life into items you already have," said Dinah Wulf, author and blogger of the website DIY Inspired. "Some of my favorite projects can be done with ordinary household items and just a dab of glue." Here are four easy upcycled projects to get your creative juices flowing. A cork cell phone stand? Wine-not? Wine corks make excellent crafting material, so instead of throwing the cork away once the bottle is empty, put it to use by creating a stand for your smartphone. All that you need for this cute project are 24 corks and a sturdy, quick-drying glue like DAP RapidFuse All Purpose Adhesive.

cheakwoolfolk.com

Start by stacking the corks in a pyramid shape, applying just a thin layer of glue to where the corks meet. Press each bond together for 30 seconds to ensure a strong hold. Next, just add one extra row of corks at the bottom for the phone to rest on, and repeat with the adhesive. Allow to cure for 30 minutes. In less than five minutes, you've created a unique resting place for your phone that keeps it handy while you work at your desk or look up recipes in the kitchen. A dazzling jewelry box for hidden treasures For an easy, budget-friendly crafting project, Wulf recommends scouring flea markets and garage sales for old ceramic boxes. With a little dressing up, they make the perfect jewelry box for you or a young one. Start by spray-painting the box in your desired color. Once dry, embellish with rhinestones or old figurines - even old decorative salt or pepper shakers. Simply dab a bit of adhesive on the item, then press into the box for 30 seconds to seal. It's the perfect gift for the little princess in your life. A bird feeder to tweet about One of Wulf's favorite projects is creating an eye-catching bird feeder made from an old saucer and teacup. It's a way to repurpose old dishes that you no longer use, while also bringing some whimsy to the backyard. Simply lay the cup on its side on top of the saucer, and check to see where the cup and saucer touch. Next, apply the adhesive to these two areas to set and press together for 30 seconds. To keep the cup from rolling as it sets, place two small items on either side. After it cures for 30 minutes, it will be ready to fill with bird seed and hang. A marvelous mug makeover We all have that favorite mug for our morning coffee, but with heavy use, it's easy for the handle to chip or break in two. Instead of throwing it away, apply a bit of adhesive to the exposed ends and press together for 30 seconds. Your favorite mug is as good as new! Don't have a favorite mug? Apply word tiles or other fun accessories to a basic ceramic mug to create a one-of-a-kind treasure that you'll look forward to using each morning. Just be sure to apply adhesive only to the exterior of the mug, as many glues are not food safe, and hand wash your newly created masterpiece. Beyond crafting for fun, use your newfound crafting skills to repair other household items such as flower pots and picture frames. Your first instinct may be to trash the pieces and shop for replacements, but by repairing your items instead of replacing, you can save significant amounts of money, as well as hang on to irreplaceable heirlooms and items with sentimental value. RapidFuse All Purpose Adhesive is a cost-efficient solution, as it bonds to virtually everything, sets in 30 seconds and fully cures in 30 minutes. In less time than it takes to find a replacement, you can be enjoying your old items once again.

Don't suffer high energy bills any longer

Article contributed by: BPT

3 areas to insulate that will save you money on energy bills (BPT) - Do you cringe each month when your utility bills arrive? The annual energy cost for a typical single family home in the U.S. is more than $2,000, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. If you can think of a thousand things you'd rather spend your hard-earned money on than electricity and natural gas, the solution to saving on energy costs is easier than you think. While you might assume the numerous electronic gadgets you own drive your high utility bills, the real cost culprits are your furnace and air conditioner. Space heating and cooling account for 42 percent of home energy costs double what the typical home spends running its electronics and small appliances. What's truly unfortunate is much of the money spent on heating and cooling homes is wasted, as heat leaks out of your home in winter and comes in during the summer. The reason? About 90 percent of U.S. homes are under-insulated, according to the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association. cheakwoolfolk.com

Aug/Sept18 142

Ending your suffering from high energy bills can be as easy as tackling a few, simple, do-it-yourself insulation projects. Key areas to insulate are your home's attic, basement, crawl space and garage. Read on for tips on insulating these spaces to improve your home's energy efficiency and comfort, while putting money back in your pocket. 1. Attic As heat rises and many attics are un-insulated or poorly insulated, the attic is a good place to start for making your home more cozy and cost-effective. Insulating your attic is "a DIY project you can tackle in a weekend, and the savings you'll get add up every year," said Tom Silva, general contractor for the popular "This Old House" TV show. Many contractors and homeowners use loose-fill insulation or fiberglass batts in attics. Although these materials are easy to work with, it is difficult to ensure they do not leave gaps through which heat can escape. And, since they are designed to fit between the joists in the attic floor, they leave the joists uninsulated, which provides many places for heat to transfer from the home into the attic. An alternative that is also easy to work with, and that provides continuous insulation, is rigid foam panels. Among the rigid foams, expanded polystyrene (EPS) provides the highest insulating power per dollar. EPS panels are simple to cut to size, without creating mess, are recyclable and can be installed throughout your home. One of the EPS brands available at home improvement stores is Insulfoam RTech insulation. 2. Basement and crawl space In addition to insulating your attic, it's important to make sure the bottom part of your home is energyefficient. For most of the U.S. other than the hot Gulf Coast region, "it's cost-effective and wise to install basement wall insulation," wrote Martin Holladay on his "Musings of an Energy Nerd" blog. As in the attic, rigid foam insulation boards can readily be cut to size and installed on basement walls. While insulation can be applied to the inside or outside of a basement wall, for existing homes it is typically much easier to install it on the inside wall. This avoids having to move dirt away from the foundation and back-fill once the insulation is in place. While you're insulating your basement, be sure to also insulate any crawlspaces, including both the walls and ceiling of these areas. 3. Garage door "Garage doors notoriously are un-insulated," said David Stassi, field technical support manager at Insulfoam. "Fortunately, readily available DIY insulation kits allow homeowners to insulate their garage door in less than an hour, for less than $100." Even a beginning DIYer can do the job, as you simply cut the insulation panels to size with a knife and straightedge, and flex the panels into place between the garage door's horizontal rails. The panels remain firmly in place without messy glues or awkward tape. For step-by-step instructions on installing garage door insulation or EPS insulation in basements, crawl spaces and attics, visit the Insulfoam YouTube channel. With a few simple DIY insulation projects, you can save hundreds of dollars every year. Instead of spending too much on heating and cooling, you'll have extra money for fun things like eating dinner out or taking a well-deserved vacation.

Easy and breezy: 6 tips for controll 19

T

"As Americans gear up for sun, surf, barbecues and all the other fun activities that represent summer, they're also concerned with how to keep themselves and their homes comfortably cool this season. Of course, they're also concerned with controlling costs. The average homeowner spends nearly half of their yearly utility bills - an average of $900 on heating and cooling, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

BPT

Fortunately, we can all take steps to save energy and protect our environment, while still maintaining comfortable temperatures this summer. Think about which of the following tips might help in your home. Brilliant breezes:. Ceiling fans create a breeze effect that makes air seem cooler than it really is, allowing you to set your thermostat slightly higher without discomfort. On hotter days, raising the thermostat by only two degrees and using a ceiling fan can reduce air conditioning costs by up to 14 percent. Remember - ceiling fans cool you, not the room, so be sure to turn it off when you leave the room! Get with the program: Tune up your heating and cooling system annually and change filters every three months. A dirty filter can increase energy costs and damage your equipment. If your home has uneven temperatures between rooms, consider adding insulation to your attic. That can help you maintain a more comfortable, even temperature in your home and reduce energy bills.

It's curtains for you: When you're away from home or simply don't need full sunlight, use double- or triple-layered heavy curtains backed with insulated material to keep the sun from unnecessarily heating your rooms, especially those with windows facing west. You can always switch them out for lighter-weight versions to take better advantage of sunlight when winter comes. Thoughts on your thermostat: Optimize your heating and air conditioning use by installing a Wi-Fi enabled ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat. They're independently certified to deliver reliable performance and energy savings, and let you use your computer or smartphone to remotely adjust your home's temperature on demand, schedule automatic temperature changes based on your lifestyle and receive important feedback on energy use. Become a microwave master: You can use up to 80 percent less energy when you cook via microwave oven instead of traditional oven or stove, and because a microwave generates less heat, your home stays cooler so you can also save on air conditioning. Ultimately, switching to microwave cooking for just one meal daily could prevent up to 922 pounds of greenhouse gases per year. Air-dry clothes: Clothes dryers are the largest energy user in the laundry room. That makes indoor or outdoor air drying an excellent alternative. Switching to a clothesline or series of drying racks for just three months of the year could conserve up to 408 pounds of greenhouse gases annually. Summertime doesn't have to mean astronomical air conditioning bills, and when you avoid cranking down your thermostat in hot weather, you also do your part to protect the environment. Lower temps at a lower price: How Aug/Sept18 146

to improve the energy-efficiency of your home today Contributed by BPT

When the seasons change, the energy needs in your home change right along with them. And yet, whether you need to heat or cool your home, there's one thing that never shifts: You want to do so as efficiently as possible.

An energy-efficient home is more than just good for the environment. It's good for your pocketbook as well. By eliminating any unnecessary energy expenses you ensure you have more money to spend enjoying all the season has to offer. You can start making your home more energy-efficient today and it begins with these four tips. * Get proactive about your insulation. Your home's insulation is often treated with an out-of-sight, out-of-mind mentality, yet improvements here could dramatically support your home's energy-efficiency. While insulation is commonly seen as a benefit to keep your home warm in the winter, it also works to keep cool, air-conditioned air inside as well. Your insulation needs depend, in part, on where you live, but it's worth your time to research this opportunity. Check to see that you have sufficient insulation and make additions or replacements as necessary. * Have your HVAC system serviced. A well-functioning HVAC system can have a dramatic impact on your home's energy-efficiency and now is the perfect time of year to have your unit serviced. During their visit your HVAC contractor will monitor refrigerant levels, clean the evaporator, the condenser and the coils as well as adjust the blower components. This should improve your unit's output, however, if your cleaned unit still cannot keep the house comfortable at a reasonable rate, you can replace it with a more energy-friendly model. LG HVAC units, for example, are highly efficient and several have been recognized as "Energy Star 2018 Most Efficient" winners, meaning they represent the highest energy-efficiency in the category. From indoor units like the ultra-quiet, sleek wall-mounted Art Cool Gallery to outdoor units like the Multi F ductless option, there's an HVAC unit to match your needs.

cheakwoolfolk.com

* Bring your windows into focus. The role your windows have in dictating the temperature in your home can be considerable. Older windows allow cool air to escape outside and that makes your air conditioner work harder to control the interior temperature. Replacing them eliminates this problem and sets you up to more easily retain heat during the winter. And if new windows simply aren't possible right now, you can also make a smaller, more immediate impact on your energy-efficiency by closing the curtains during peak sunlight hours. This helps keep the temperature of your home cooler and reduces stress on your HVAC unit. * Consider alternative energy sources. Instead of simply focusing on what you can do with your current energy situation, expand your options to alternative energy sources as well. Installing home solar panels can drastically cut or even eliminate your electricity bills and even increase your home's resale value. Newer systems like the LG NeOn R maximize sunlight absorption and generate the maximum possible output - as much as 26 percent more than other comparably sized solar panels. This higher efficiency means that your solar panels can work in any climate or season to deliver for you. Start improving your energy-efficiency today Improving your home's energy-efficiency benefits you not only during the summer but all year long, so what are you waiting for? Start applying the tips above today and you'll see the benefits on each and every single energy bill going forward.

4 TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR PET SAFE THIS SUMMER There are thousands of reasons to love the summer, and if you're a pet owner, you love summer more than most.

Summer is the perfect opportunity to get outside and get active with our pets. Between cool swims in the pool and brisk walks in the sunshine, summer is a great bonding time for you and Fluffy or Fido. However, it's also important for pet owners to have a proper understanding of factors that can affect their pet's health and safety during the warmer months. This includes varying weather conditions, maintaining proper nutrition and preparing for other summertime events.

Aug/Sept18 150

With June being National Pet Preparedness Month, Dr. Kurt Venator, Purina's Chief Veterinary Officer, suggests four things for pet owners to keep in mind this summer so that we can live safe, healthy and happy lives together with our pets whether at home or on the road. Beating the heat Just like the heat can make people feel unwell, the particularly hot days of summer can leave pets dehydrated or ill if not properly attended to. Pet owners should be mindful of a pet's exercise, outdoor time and hydration to keep them feeling their best. More specifically, if heading out for a walk, be sure to go outside during cooler parts of the day like early morning or early evening. Also, before you start your walk, use your hand to feel the pavement. If it feels too hot to touch, then it's way too hot for your pet's paws. Stay in the grass or possibly try booties so his or her paws don't burn. Above all, never leave your pet unattended in the car. Your car acts like a greenhouse on hot days, and overheating can set in quickly, causing permanent damage to your pet, and even death. On hot days, it's best to just leave your pet at home. Summer snacks and proper ingredients With blueberries, strawberries and other yummy treats in season during the summer, you can share these healthy indulgences with pets too. Fruits like peaches, strawberries and mangoes are great treats for pets as long as pits, stems and leaves are removed and fruit is thoroughly washed. What's great about these fruits is that they contain vitamins, fiber and antioxidants and tend to be low in sugar, so when fed in moderation, they're actually quite healthy for dogs in the same ways they're healthy for humans. That's why Purina includes fruits, like blueberries, in their Beneful Playful Life and Beneful Grain Free formulas. Made from real protein sources and blended with an optimal amount of fruit and veggies, these foods can give your pet the nutrition they need to play all day. cheakwoolfolk.com

Did someone say vacay? Taking to the skies? When flying with a pet, it's important to understand your pet's needs. Therefore, you should conduct the appropriate research, plan ahead and understand airline/aircraft policies on the day of departure to ensure the trip is just as safe for your pet as it is for you. For instance, did you know that in order for your pet to fly you should obtain a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection? Most airlines require this document within ten days of travel. This document must be signed by an accredited veterinarian, and should indicate that your pet has been examined and able to fly. Hitting the road? Buy a travel harness that comes across your pet's chest and clips onto a safety belt. This keeps your pet secure and prevents him or her from interfering with your driving. To keep your pet feeling comfortable and entertained on the journey, also consider bringing a cozy blanket, spill-proof bowl and timeconsuming treats, like the Purina Busy(R) Bone, to pass the hours till you reach your destination. Be prepared for natural disasters Although it's difficult to predict when natural disasters will occur, preparing for the worst for your family and your pet can make the difference when every second counts - especially during hurricanes, tornadoes and wildfires. Understand what weather impacts your area, have resources on hand and have a plan to keep everyone safe. Just like you, your pet should also have a disaster kit that includes basic pet essentials such as bottled water, cans of wet food, blankets, collapsible bowls, cat litter and pan, and a leash and collar. A one- to two-week supply of food that your pet usually eats is an ideal amount to include in your disaster kit as well; however, be sure to check the expiration dates. Pack the foods your pet eats routinely to ensure complete and balanced nutrition in stressful moments like this. For more information and tips about keeping your pets safe, healthy and always prepared, please visit www.Purina.com/Summer.

5 tips when buying a car for a teen

Aug/Sept18 152

BYÂ BPT

I. With graduation season and summer break upon us, many parents may be on the hunt for a new car for their graduate. Memorial Day deals offer some of the best incentives of the year, so it's crucial to know how to navigate what can be an overwhelming and exhausting process. "USAA helps members find, finance and insure vehicles that are right for their personal needs and financial goals," says Heather Pollard, vice president of Auto Experience at USAA. "We want to avoid you ever having to regret your purchase decision, or worse, lead to financial hardships where you can no longer afford to keep your vehicle." If you are one of the millions of Americans looking to buy a car, here are the five things you need to know before you step foot on a dealer's lot. Know what you can afford. The first and most important question to answer before launching into the car-buying process is "how much can I afford?" Figuring this out will help you determine whether you are in the market for a new or used vehicle. A good starting point is to use 15-18 percent of your take-home pay as a gauge for your total vehicle budget including the loan, insurance, gas and maintenance.

cheakwoolfolk.com

. Next decision, how will you pay for it? There are numerous ways to manage the financial burden for purchasing a new car, including taking out a loan. If you have decided to go the loan route, determine how much you can afford in monthly payments. Banks or another financial institution might offer lower interest rates than a car dealer. Aim to pay off the loan within three to five years. "Get pre-approved for an auto loan amount and interest rate so you know where you stand before you begin shopping," says RenĂŠe Horne, vice president of Consumer Lending at USAA Bank. "Look for low loan rates and flexible terms to fit your budget needs versus being steered by dealers into a decision solely based on monthly payment, which often results in paying more in interest for the overall loan term." Another idea is to sell or trade in your new graduate's current vehicle. If you plan to do this, factor in the cash value of that car and then add your planned down payment, typically 15-20 percent. You can use online tools such as USAA's Auto Loan Calculator to get an estimate of what the end price tag will be. Determine the total cost of ownership. It is important to understand the total cost of ownership before surprising your graduate with the car of their dreams. Everything from gas to auto insurance will be an extra expense added on to the monthly cost for a new or used car and something everyone in the family needs to consider.

When receiving an auto insurance quote, note that collision and comprehensive coverage generally cost less for used cars. If purchasing an older car, consider getting pricing for Extended Vehicle Protection coverage before you go to the dealer. Keep an open mind.

"Good tires are super essential on- or off-road," Brightly says, "because they play a vital role in braking, steering, comfort and handling."

A vacation for the ages: 7 off-roading tips BPT

cheakwoolfolk.com

Summer's here and millions of folks are gearing up for the Great American Road Trip. Instead of hitting the highway, how about taking a sharp turn off-road instead? That's the suggestion of 79-years-young Jim Brightly, a still-active offroad and outdoor journalist who has a vast array of publications on his resume, including Four Wheeler, Truckin', Trailer Life and Field & Stream. Brightly, an off-roader for more than 50 years, says "Off-roading is always challenging and fun. You never know what's going to happen on the trail or what you can see over the next hill." The best part of off-roading, says Brightly, is that it's ageless. "It's a great vacation for all ages, old and young. Our three kids grew up in a Jeep's backseat, and now our grandkids are continuing the sport. You can get away from the crowds or take your personal crowd with you in their own rigs. You can smell the campfire, see the stars, enjoy the adrenalin from playing in the dunes or finding that perfect campsite." For beginning off-roaders, Brightly has a few tips for a memorable experience: 1. Slow down: Enjoy the scenery and watch for the challenges so you can approach them correctly and safely. 2. Safety first: Always carry plenty of water and never go off-road alone. Just like swimming, you always want to have a buddy along. 3. Fluid situation: Check all your vehicle's fluids (oil, brake, coolant, wiper) to make sure they are at the right levels. 4. Don't trash it: Respect the outdoors and trail you're on by not leaving any trash behind. 5. Nice spare: Along with a matching spare tire, keep a spare fan belt as well (and the tools needed to change it). Your rig will never break down in the driveway, but a fan belt could snap or slip at any time. 6. Be careful: Know your off-road driving skill level and limitations: don't do more than you can safely handle. 7. Know your tires. Choose a tire that's appropriate for the terrain you'll be on most of the time. For off-roading, you'll need something extremely durable, with great traction.

"Good tires are super essential on- or off-road," Brightly says, "because they play a vital role in braking, steering, comfort and handling." For off-roading, Brightly says choices include a versatile all-terrain tire (A/T), or a durable mudterrain (M/T) tire like Yokohama Tire's rugged GEOLANDAR M/T G003 or GEOLANDAR X-MT. "These tires are also designed for highway use and daily driving, too - they are on my rig for my upcoming 2,700-mile Continental Divide expedition." Maintaining your off-road tires for daily use is essential, too. This includes taking five minutes a month to check your tire pressure. Keeping them properly inflated will give you a better ride and save fuel. Other tire tips include: * Check your tread depth by placing a penny upside down into a tread groove. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, your tire's tread has worn down to the legal limit and you need to buy new tires. * Tires must be replaced when the tread is worn down to 2/32 of an inch (the lowest legal limit). It's best to replace them before they reach 2/32, depending on your climate and driving conditions. * Rotating your tires regularly promotes even wear of the tread. Tires should be rotated every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. For more tire care and safety tips, visit www.yokohamatire.com/tires-101 or www.USTires.org.

ACHIEVING BALANCE: 5 TIPS TO MANAGE WORK, SCHOOL AND FAMILY BPT

ckwmag.info CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

Aug/Sept18 160

It may not be easy, but many are doing it, balancing school, work and family. It's a difficult task and those who do it will tell you they sometimes feel as though they are being pulled in three directions at the same time. If you are already struggling to achieve balance, or are considering adding school to your already busy life, there are things you can do to not only survive but thrive in managing these demands. Below is a collection of gathered advice from students who are "doing it all" and these tips can help you manage your busy life and find balance: * Have your goal from the beginning. Navigating through the tough times - and they will come is really a matter of motivation. For starters, decide what are you going to school for. If your answer is simply because you feel you should, it will be tough to stick with it. Instead focus on your goals. Maybe you want to buy a permanent home for your family, to grow your career or find a job that will help you pay for your child's college. Eboni Weekes, a Strayer University student, vowed to provide a better life for her daughter, so she knew she needed a Bachelor's in Business Administration to further her career. Whatever your motivation, keep it front and center so you can call on it when the tough times come. * Explore your options. All of your options. Education models simply aren't one-size-fits-all. There may be certain programs designed specifically for your lifestyle - you just may not be aware of them. For some, flexibility may be a key factor, while for others - and, in fact, for most - cost is the biggest factor in selecting a program. Strayer University, for example, caters to working adults, keeping in mind the financial difficulties of managing work, family and school. The Strayer Graduation Fund allows bachelor's degree students to earn a course at no cost for every three classes they complete. This effectively reduces your college tuition expenses by as much as 25 percent if you stay actively enrolled. "The Strayer Graduation Fund has shown me that there are other alternative funds available for me to acquire my degree," said Eboni. "I don't have to depend on loans."

* Develop your support system. When balancing school, work and family, it's important to realize you don't have to go it alone. Students who juggle multiple demands recommend asking for help from grandparents, friends and neighbors. An evening babysitter can free you up to study and get your school work done quickly. Childcare can get expensive, so consider a no-cost childcare swap with a friend or neighbor. Ask if they can take care of your child on nights when you have class and in return, you can take care of their kids on other nights. * Get organized. When you have little to no spare time, you can't afford to waste it. Planning your daily and weekly activities through a resource like Google Calendar can help you stay on top of all your obligations and identify pockets of free time that you can spend studying or simply running errands. * Don't forget about you. Many busy students say that with all of the competing demands on their time, it's easy to forget about themselves. In your role as an employee, parent and student, it's easy to forget that you need some "me time" to prevent burnout. Protect your sleep at all costs and don't be afraid to schedule end-of-semester rewards for yourself. A massage, a nice meal out with family, a trip to the movies or even a round of golf can be just the thing you need to energize your spirit, so you can devote even more attention and passion to your schoolwork, your job and, of course, your family. Finding balance between your home, work and school lives can be one of the most difficult tasks for adult students. But, as many can attest, it is possible. Apply the tips above and stick with it. The rewards will certainly be worth your efforts. Students who juggle multiple demands recommend asking

GOT STRESS? BRINGING YOUR PET TO WORK CAN HELP By: BPT

If you've ever felt tense, anxious or simply unable to relax while performing your job, you're far from alone.

As more and more companies adopt a pets-atwork policy, consider these facts based on a recent Purina report about the many advantages of such programs:

A recent survey by the American Institute of Stress found 80 percent of U.S. workers across industries have felt stress in the workplace; nearly half say they could use help dealing with it and 42 percent said their co-workers could use some relief.

* They can benefit health: Pet-employee interaction has been shown to reduce the employees' blood pressure and cholesterol levels in addition to alleviating anxiety.

To the delight of animal lovers everywhere, awareness of the physical, mental and emotional toll taken by stress is leading progressive employers to create take-yourpet-to-work programs. For example, for the past 20 years Purina has encouraged its associates to bring their pets to work, and in a typical week hundreds of dogs and cats enjoy spending time with their owners at the pet food maker's St. Louis campus. "Pets bring a wealth of benefits - both physical and emotional - to pet owners and their families, so it's no surprise those same benefits also apply to the workplace and employees," notes Dr. Kurt Venator, Purina's chief veterinary officer. "Whether a pet helps provide a calming sense during a challenging situation or encourages employees to take a walk during their lunch break, here at Purina we experience the benefits of pets at work every day, and want others to as well."

* They can improve employee retention: Sixtythree percent of employees in pet-friendly workplaces say they're very satisfied with their work environments - nearly twice as many as those in other workplaces. In fact, respondents rank the option of bringing pets at work as the second most-valuable employee perk - more valuable than free coffee and parking. Overall, three in five survey participants wish their workplace would institute a pet-friendly policy. * They can alleviate loneliness: Eight in 10 employees who can bring pets to work say that activity makes them feel more happy, relaxed and sociable. That's partly because talking about pets can be an ice breaker, making it easier for people to approach co-workers and get to know them better. * They can promote physical activity: Many employees spend breaks and lunchtime playing with their pets or taking them for walks, boosting their own aerobic activity at the same time. * They can increase pets' happiness: Rather than staying home waiting for their owners to arrive, pets get to socialize with new people, play with other pets and enjoy more activity. Nearly nine of 10 people in the survey agree that bringing their pets to work strengthens owner-pet bonding.

cheakwoolfolk.com

In light of the proven benefits, Purina encourages other employers to consider allowing pets in the workplace. A toolkit with tips and information is provided at Purina.com. "Our goal with our report is to continue to raise awareness of the benefits of taking pets to work and to arm employees and employers with insights that can help facilitate pet-friendly environments within their companies," notes Dr. Venator.

GET INVOLVED IN THE GAME OF CHESS

ckwmag.info CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

Aug/Sept18 168

. (Family Features) Chess, once a game considered to be reserved for the affluent and older men, is creating a cooler image with a younger demographic. The ancient game has seen a rising level of involvement among young people in the United States, and there's even a growing interest in watching tournaments, where big money is at stake. Youth who are interested in taking up the game can find plenty of inspirational role models; three of the top 10 players in the world are from the United States, which is now host to some of the most prestigious chess events in the world including the U.S. and U.S. Women's Chess Championships, the U.S. Junior Championship and U.S. Girls' Junior Championship and the Sinquefield Cup. If you're interested in taking up the game on your own or sharing the experience with a young player, here are some tips to get started. Practice at Home As the saying goes, the best place to begin is the beginning, and with chess, that means taking time to understand the game. Grow familiar with the chess board and pieces, as well as the rules and basic strategy. Practicing at home with friends and family can build a foundation for learning more complex game play down the road. Learn About its History The origins of chess date back as far as 1,500 years, and for young players, the ability to take an active part in a piece of history can hold an element of fascination on its own. One way to explore the game's history is to visit the World Chess Hall of Fame in the U.S. Chess capital, St. Louis, which currently features a series of exhibitions that highlight the connections between chess, art, culture and history. Plan your visit at worldchesshof.org. Encourage Friends to Take Interest Chess provides a unique dynamic for a pair of players to converse and bond over the love of the game while developing a mutual respect for one another. Encourage your young player to invite friends to play, and to develop peer relationships through a shared interest in chess. Follow Tips from the Pros For those unfamiliar with the game, keeping tabs on elite players who have perfected it not only gives kids insight on high-level strategy, it offers inspirational role models. cheakwoolfolk.com

"One of the most important things for a young player to remember is that chess isn't just about planning your own openings and moves," said grandmaster Fabiano Caruana, who is currently the No. 1 U.S. player and the first American to challenge for an undisputed World Chess Championship since 1972. "You also have to be conscious of your opponents and their vantage point on the game. That awareness of others is actually a lesson that applies to life in general." Join a Chess Club Interaction with players of all levels is not only a fun way to build relationships with those who share a love of chess, it's a great opportunity to meet fellow players who are eager to trade tips or simply pull up a chair and enjoy a game. Many clubs offer other resources, as well. For example, the Saint Louis Chess Club hosts dozens of international, national and open tournaments, in addition to weekly classes and lectures. Learn more at saintlouischessclub.org. "Introducing a child to chess is a true gift," Caruana said. "There are so many advantages, from cognitive to social to even financial rewards for students who embrace the game and excel." #14200 Source: Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis #14200 Source: Saint Louis Chess Club and World Chess Hall of Fame

SECRET WEAPONS MOMS USE TO COPE WITH BACK-TOSCHOOL CHAOS

ckwmag.info CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

Aug/Sept18 172

(BPT) - For moms, back to school means transitioning back into routines filled with more activities to shuttle kids and their friends to and from, more homework to keep track of and more chaos to deal with at home. But with a little preparation and an arsenal of secret weapons, moms can get through it, even if it's simply sharing strategies so they know they're not alone. According to a new survey of 1,000 U.S. moms of children ages 3-17 by Wakefield Research, 85 percent of moms agree that pizza is their go-to meal when their kids' friends come over, not only because the kids love it, but because it's an essential to keep on hand for lastminute plans. Here are some of the other ways moms say they cope with everything from household chaos to mealtime madness. Who needs sleep? Unfortunately, most moms handle chaos during the day and revisit other responsibilities late at night after kids are in bed. In fact, 61 percent have stayed up until midnight or later to finish chores or responsibilities they couldn't complete during the day. More than 1 in 4 moms have stayed up until 2 a.m. or later. Nodding off at work. Late nights can take a toll on moms who need to be up and "on" in front of coworkers during the day. Half of working moms concede they've been so exhausted from lack of sleep that they've taken a nap at the office, and one-third of them confess to taking on-the-job snoozes more than once. Sanity-keeping strategies. Moms turn to many strategies to minimize the daily crisis at home. Their most common ways are prioritizing what's important (81 percent) and posting lists such as chores and to-dos (73 percent). More than a third (34 percent) look to mom blogs for tips. Send help now! Some moms end up turning a blind eye to what's under the surface - literally. Nearly a quarter (24 percent) admit they can see just half or less of their floors clearly, meaning parts of the floor that aren't covered with toys, paper or furniture. Moms crave help so often, nearly half (48 percent) agree they would choose a full day of housekeeping and caretaking versus a full day of spa treatments. Defusing dinnertime drama. Pizza is more than a convenience; it's a peacemaker. Eighty percent of moms believe pizza would quiet their kids quicker than an air horn; 65 percent agree having pizza to give their kids at the end of the day is just as relaxing to moms as wine; and more than half concur it is one of the only things that settles mealtime mayhem at home. For example, Red Baron pizza is a meal everyone in the family can agree on, providing one less battle to get everyone through the school year. One delicious slice at a time. 4 TRAITS TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

BPT

Planning a wedding is no small task. In order to enjoy the process (and stay sane), it's important to recognize early on which details can be decided quickly, and which ones deserve more time and care. When it comes to wedding photos, you can't go wrong with a little extra time and thought, because there's no such thing as a do-over. Choosing the right person for the job makes all the difference in getting that collection of photos you'll treasure forever. When your special day rolls around, a professional photographer will have the skill and artistry in capturing those beautiful candid moments as well as the more formal portraits. Here are some traits to look for during your search that signal you're in good hands.

ckwmag.info CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

Aug/Sept18 176

. 1. A portfolio you love. Your venue may have a list of "preferred professionals" to choose from, but don't feel obligated to stick with their list. Feel free to explore your options, and browse local guides and websites for the ones that have strong portfolios that speak to you. As you look, pay attention to mood, style and facial expressions. Skilled and experienced photographers should have a strong and varied wedding day collection. 2. They help you think through the day. A good listener who takes a genuine interest in your plans - and makes sure you feel elated with their work - is always a good sign. Things like venue, lighting, time of day, the number of people you want to capture, number of settings and the itinerary are just a few factors they need to consider to plan and organize the shoot. If you're not sure about something, ask their opinion. A professional will give you an honest assessment along with lots of suggestions so you enjoy your special day and capture those priceless images. 3. Something just clicks. And it's not just the shutter. Bad puns aside, keep in mind you're going to be spending the day with your photographer. In fact, you could very well be spending more time with the photographer than anyone else - even with your beloved. Don't skip the in-person, faceto-face meeting when planning your special day. You want to be sure this is someone who makes you both feel open and relaxed, so trust your gut feeling.

4. They're the complete package. A professional will complete the time-consuming (and sometimes overwhelming) task of sorting through hundreds of shots for you and put their skills to work in editing the images. What you should get is a collection of hand-picked images, all perfectly edited, cropped and toned, so they capture the best moments and emotions of the day. The one bearing the camera has a great responsibility: They are recording the first pages of history for your new family. To make sure you find the one that has the experience and the flair the day calls for, a professional photographer is always the right call. Start your search with the Professional Photographers of America by visiting FindAPhotographer.com/WeddingPhotos.

Simple ways to earn extra money without owning a car BPT

Aug/Sept18 180

Whether you're new to a city and are getting on your feet, or you don't want the commitment of a longtime lease or loan, there are countless ways to put some dough in your pocket without the need to purchase a car. Working with a flexible schedule doesn't necessarily mean that you need to be tied to traditional car ownership. Here are five simple ways to make money on your own time. Pet sitter If you love animals, consider offering your services to people in your area. Depending on your schedule, you could become a dog walker or pet sitter, where you visit the animal during the day while the owner is at work. Another option is pet boarding out of your home. This can be particularly great for dogs. Kennels are expensive, and many dog owners will consider qualified and trustworthy home boarding options as an alternative to kennels when they are out of town. Advertise and build up your own clientele or use a site like Rover.com to network. Driver Want to try out ridesharing but don't own a car? Or maybe you don't want the commitment of a longtime lease or loan? Car ownership and contracts can be expensive, but you can curb or even eliminate the cost and earn money by participating in the Lyft Express Drive. The program provides affordable access to rental cars through partners like Hertz and Flexdrive. Drivers have access to a Lyft-exclusive starting weekly rental rate of $209 per week (plus taxes and fees). However, this cost can drop with Express Drive Rental Rewards, a program designed to make each rental more affordable. If a renter gives a certain number of Lyft rides each week, some or all of the rental costs can be covered by Lyft's Rental Rewards bonus. Learn more at www.lyft.com/expressdrive.

. Tutor/coach What skills do you have that others could benefit from? Do you speak another language? Have a degree in mathematics? Play an instrument? Did you go to college on a gymnastics scholarship? Whatever your specialty, your skills could be in high demand. Many parents pay top dollar for their kids to get private tutoring or coaching lessons. Create a resume that stresses your specialty and begin advertising on neighborhood websites and other local places. Once you start successfully tutoring one or two students, create a referral program to encourage word-of-mouth recommendations and grow your business. Freelance The gig economy refers to the labor market of short-term or freelance workers, and it's growing quickly in the United States. Some people find so much success with freelancing that they quit their full-time work and do contracts as their schedule allows. You may not be ready to do that, but you can make extra money using your professional skills for short-term telecommuting gigs. Upwork and Indeed.com are just two websites where you can find short-term employment that fits into your spare time. You could also consider advertising your skills on your own by creating a professional portfolio online and reaching out to potential clients. House cleaner/handyman Everyone loves a clean house, but not everyone loves to clean. If you enjoy getting down and dirty in order to make rooms shine, consider housecleaning as your side gig. Whether you're sprucing up a kitchen or tackling a pile of laundry, this can be incredibly lucrative and easy to flex around your schedule. If your skills are more with a hammer or screwdriver, you might consider becoming a part-time handyman. As America's baby boomer generation ages, the need for help around the house like this will grow. Start building your clientele list now.

How to prep your home for a new addition to the family Whether it's a baby or pet, a new addition to the family calls for new, unexpected responsibilities, and is bound to come with adjustments for every member of the family. While it would be silly to guarantee zero stress for the new family environment, below are tips for a transition with more playtime and fewer headaches to help you get started. Here's what you need to know: Get ready in style Prep the space with all the necessities needed to make your new addition's life as happy as possible. Based on the needs of your new child or pet, this could mean turning your home office or game room into a nursery, or finding the perfect doggy door to install in the back entrance. After checking big-ticket items off your list, consider how moments such as bath time will change in the new dynamic. Choose a product that is stylish and functional, like the Peerless SideKick Shower System, which has interchangeable attachments for parents, pet and baby. Versatile shower additions create a one-stop shop for everyone in the family, limiting mess and making bath time more efficient (and cost-effective!).

Proof! Proof! When you walk through your front door, you are greeted with the comfort and security of being in a space made just for you. With a new baby or pet, that could all change! It is important to take a careful look at your home and proof for all possible dangers and accidents. Move chemicals and cleaning products onto high shelves, tape electrical cords to baseboards, find ways to secure cabinets and doors that you would prefer not to have curious hands, mouths and noses digging around in, and make sure anything that can induce choking is stored in a safe place, far away from the curious new family member. Budget for two A new addition to the family means one more mouth to feed and nurture. It is important to prepare for unexpected expenses. Babies and pets are more prone to illness, injury and accidents because they are constantly exploring their environment. Remember to plan ahead by setting up a monthly savings plan to make room for miscellaneous expenses in your monthly budget. Go the extra mile and save more money by buying clothes and accessories from thrift or consignment stores, using family or friends for backup daycare, and asking relatives to babysit or puppy sit. Remember that planning is key. You've got this! Playtime Ensure a stress- and mess-free playtime by designating an area for play in your home. If possible, create a gated space to give yourself a sense of control over playtime activities. This will offer peace of mind and allow your new addition to have fun and express themselves without any inhibitions. Bonus: There is less cleanup time as well. BEE RESPONSIBLE! HOW TO ATTRACT POLLINATORS TO YOUR GARDEN AND HELP THEM THRIVE A SPECIAL BONUS ARTICLE BY BPT

It's been in the news for years now: the decline of pollinators such as honeybees and butterflies, and how it's upsetting our world's healthy ecosystem. We need pollinators for the growth of many of the foods we eat each day - according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, some scientists estimate that one in three bites of food we take

In 2016, after evaluating the risk to honeybees and other pollinators, Ortho also announced plans to phase out neonicotinoid-based pesticides from all its outdoor gardening products and is investing in alternative pest control solutions. Ortho's parent company, Scotts Miracle-Gro, has funded 125 pollinatorfriendly gardens throughout the country.

result from the work of pollinators. Berries, apples, oranges, almonds and scores of other foods, not to mention flowers, rely on pollinators. If they disappear, those foods will fade along with them. So, why are pollinators declining? They can't find enough food because their habitats are disappearing. Fortunately, we can all help protect pollinators. Ortho, a leading brand in lawn and garden, recently teamed up with the Pollinator Stewardship Council for a consumer education campaign, "Bee Responsible," aimed at helping home gardeners protect the pollinators in their yards, attract more of them and help them thrive.

Want to attract pollinators to your yard and help them thrive? Here are some tips. Make your garden pollinator friendly. Nectar and pollen-packed plants attract honeybees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators. Choose colorful flowers, such as alyssum, aster, delphinium, flax, lavender, liatris, lupine, phlox or zinnia. Check with your local garden store for native plants and flowers that thrive in your climate and choose a range of plants that bloom in different seasons. Encourage neighbors to do the same. If one pollinator-friendly garden is good, a network of them dotting your neighborhood is better. This could provide enough habitat and resources to help restore and bolster the pollinator population in your community.

cheakwoolfolk.com

Control pests in your garden. Insects and mites can bring disease and destruction to your garden, undoing all of the good you're trying to do for pollinators. Ortho's neonicalternative 3-in-1 Insect, Mite & Disease control will help banish the bad bugs in your garden. To use responsibly, avoid spraying when it's windy, apply the product at dusk and dawn when pollinators are less active and avoid using the product on blooms. Another tip: Use native plants whenever possible. They usually require less pesticide than plants from other zones. Provide shelter. Bees and butterflies need shelter, so make sure your yard has some cozy nesting sites, like leaves, moss, piles of grass or a patch of yard you just let go wild. Also, check out bee houses in your neighborhood garden store. They're artistic and fun, and they provide bees with shelter for their offspring to thrive. Don't forget the water. Your garden will provide the nectar and pollen. But bees, birds and butterflies need water, too. A decorative bird bath, water feature or even a shallow rain catcher will give your buzzing friends the water they need. Install a hummingbird feeder. Imagine sitting outside with your first cup of coffee in the morning and watching those magical hummingbirds dart around the feeder. You'll be nourishing your garden and your spirit at the same time. By providing pollinators with friendly habitats, backyard gardeners can help these vital components in our ecosystem regain a foothold.

"Being an innovative company where millennials want to work means employers need to digitize not only for their customers, but for their employees," says Wendy Carberg, customer experience and digital lead at Guardian. "Companies seeking to engage and enhance the employee experience are using pulse surveys and feedback tools, check-ins, employee-curated learning platforms and many other tools that help us get a total understanding of what makes employees happy and productive."

5 important tips to recruit and retain millennial BY BPT

.As millennials continue to expand their share of the workforce in this country, they're using their influence to change the workplace to their advantage. The generation of workers ages 22 to 37 is an important segment for employers as baby boomers retire in huge numbers to create what's slated to become a 15-year labor shortage. To stay competitive, employers are increasingly stepping up to appeal to young, tech-savvy workers by digitizing their most important employee communications and interactions - including their benefits administration. cheakwoolfolk.com

If you're an employer wishing to recruit and retain younger workers moving forward, you may wish to move forward with the following millennial-friendly digital tactics. 1. Teleworking opportunities. As employers and employees increasingly recognize the advantages of at-home work, about half of all U.S. workers now hold jobs that offer at least parttime telework. Proponents say such opportunities decrease employee stress levels while boosting productivity and reducing employer overhead. 2. Integrate digital benefits. A recent study by Guardian Life Insurance Company of America found millennials prefer a more intuitive, personalized and engaging benefits experience from their companies. The study finds employers are beginning to improve the end-to-end user experience, with 75 percent now focused on improving effectiveness of self-service platforms compared to 61 percent in 2014. Eighty-one percent of employers surveyed are satisfied with the highly digital benefits administration platforms they've used; 67 percent say such platforms work well for enrolling workers and 58 percent particularly praise their record-keeping ability. 3. Social media for recruiting and screening. If you're not using tools such as Facebook and Twitter as supplementary tools for finding and vetting candidates, you're missing out on the ability to spread and/or gather information that transcends the limitations of resumes and cover letters. Ninety percent of Americans 19 to 30 are now on social media, and many expect their employers to be equally on board. 4. Professional development. Millennials place great importance on being given opportunities to learn and grow on the job, and employers can make that happen through company-funded webinars, podcasts, online college classes and other curricula. Many such courses are taxdeductible, and such investments also pay off for employers as their workers gain news skills and abilities. 5. Multiple communication and storage tools. Savvy employers set up their communications systems to allow for interactions and collaboration anywhere, any time via a choice of channels. That kind of flexibility often calls for cloud-based storage platforms and content management systems. Keeping up with the latest digital tools is important for any company wishing to find quality millennial workers in today's competitive environment. To learn more about how integrating digital employee benefits can help create a more satisfied workforce, contact Guardian.

RECREATING BLACK WALL STREET THROUGH CROWDINVESTING AND LOCAVESTING BY BILL HUSTON

ckwmag.info CKW-The Chea K. Woolfolk Magazine

Black Wall Street

Aug/Sept18 200

Black Wall Street is a story that is often told in the politically and economically progressive circles of African-American communities. In the early 1900’s the oil boom provided African-Americans like other Americans the hope and promise of economic prosperity. But segregation, an American reality, that had very little to do with region and was quite simply an entrenched American policy and fact caused many of the black migrants to settle in the northern end of town under the strict lash of residential segregation. The African-American community again demonstrating a strength and resilience not their own, began to build in the face of stark and sometime brutal government and nongovernmental social, political, and economic oppression. The black entrepreneurial spirit again raised its head and these leaders began to take advantage of the entrepreneurial opportunities that strict segregation provide them. They created an impressive business ecosystem “that included banks, hotels, cafes, clothiers, movie theaters, and contemporary homes. Greenwood residents enjoyed many luxuries that their white neighbors did not, including indoor plumbing and a remarkable school system that superiorly educated Black children.” This community was destroyed by pure evil intent in the form of racial terrorism. The vast majority of black economically prosperous business centers located in every major city with substantial black population, were not destroyed by mob violence, but by government policies that drove private business decision making using urban renewal and redlining policies to systematically build wealth for working and middle class whites and to deny and starve black working and middle class residents of capital. Let’s be clear the government built the “Hood.” cheakwoolfolk.com

Understanding Redlining In 1933, faced with a housing shortage, the federal government began a program explicitly designed to increase — and segregate — America's housing stock. Author Richard Rothstein says, “the housing programs begun under the New Deal were tantamount to a "state-sponsored system of segregation." The government's efforts were "primarily designed to provide housing to white, middle-class, lower-middle-class families," he says. African-Americans and other people of color were left out of the new suburban communities — and pushed instead into urban housing projects. The term "redlining" comes from the development by the New Deal, by the federal government of maps of every metropolitan area in the country. And those maps were color-coded by first the Home Owners Loan Corp. and then the Federal Housing Administration and then adopted by the Veterans Administration, and these color codes were designed to indicate where it was safe to insure mortgages. And anywhere where African-Americans lived, anywhere where African-Americans lived nearby were colored red to indicate to appraisers that these neighborhoods were too risky to insure mortgages. The Current Impact of Redlining Today African-American income on average are about 60 percent of average white income. But African-American wealth is about 5 percent of white wealth. Most middle-class families in this country gain their wealth from the equity they have in their homes. So this enormous difference between a 60 percent income ratio and a 5 percent wealth ratio is almost entirely attributable to federal housing policy redlining implemented through the 20th century.

Aug/Sept18 202

In 1968 the Fair Housing Act was passed that allowed AfricanAmericans to effectively purchase homes anywhere in the United States, but this law was an empty promise the damage had been done. Those homes are no longer affordable to the families that could've afforded them when whites were buying into those suburbs and gaining the equity and the wealth that followed from the government sponsored policy of “Redlining. Alternative Finance for Underserved Communities of Color Are acutely aware that most small businesses and startups struggle to get access to capital and underserved communities of color receive extremely small amounts of funding from traditional funding sources. So, instead of protesting and complaining maybe small businesses and small real estate developers should begin to implement different methods of finding and deploying capital. We are going talk about 6 different types of investing alternatives that are on the cutting edge of new capital formation for underserved communities of color. Local Investment Clubs A traditional investment club is a small group of individual investors who come together to learn, share investing experiences, and help each other become more successful investors. Clubs provide education, camaraderie and buying power, plus the confidence of knowing you don’t have to go it alone. Clubs can also choose not to pool investment dollars and instead simply come together to discuss investment ideas and analysis. Local investment clubs will have a focus on investing in local businesses and local real estate development in underserved communities using crowdinvesting to allow the club members the ultimate reward derived from local crowdinvesting to be owner, customer and brand advocate all at the same time. Again this is a way to build wealth in underserved communities.

Impact Investing from Corporate and Philanthropic Foundations “Philanthropy is commendable,” said Martin Luther King, “but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice, which make philanthropy necessary.” Philanthropists and philanthropic advisors who champion equality must work to shift from a framework that grounds giving in “charity” to one that grounds giving in “justice.” Dr. Dorian Burton

As mentioned in the above section making local place based investments makes a lot of sense for investors because the benefits that locavesting bring to both the investor and the community where they live. So, let’s take the next logical step and examine why more philanthropic and corporate foundations don’t look to the local market to make impact investments along with the tiny percentage of their endowment that they use to make grants. So many of the problems and issues that plague inner-city communities are poverty based and many of them stem from government policies such as redlining and urban renewal. If foundations change their relationships in these communities from charity and began the process of providing location based impact investment into these communities to fund local businesses, real estate development, and wealth building initiatives based on market principles many of the poverty based issues would be eliminated. Rewards Crowdfunding Crowdfunding is a new and evolving fundraising alternative that connects social media with an accounting and finance mechanism to aggregate capital on a single platform. Crowdfunding provides a platform for entrepreneurs reach out to the “crowd”—which could include their friends, customers, neighbors, supporters and social network—for funding. The idea is that lots of smaller sums of money can take the place of one or two large investors or patrons, and that technology can help streamline the process. Crowdinvesting Crowdinvesting is the truly revolutionary centerpiece of the JOBS Act of 2012. It became legal on May 16th 2016. Crowdinvesting provides a platform for small real estate developers and small companies to raise money from the general public—wealthy, not wealthy, friend or stranger—as long as the investment takes place on a web site operated by a traditional broker-dealer or an S.E.C.-sanctioned crowdfunding portal, and certain other requirements are met.

Specifically, the law allows companies to raise up to $1 million in a 12-month period from the public. Investors are capped at the greater of $2,000 or 5% of their income, if their annual income or net worth is less than $100,000. The final rules also impose a limit on how much those with an income or net worth greater than $100,000 can make: they are limited to $10,000 per year or 10% of their income or net worth. Alternative Finance There are many new and emerging forms of alternative finance that provides the democratization of capital in underserved communities of color. Many of the communities find themselves to be isolated in urban centers and are areas of concentrated poverty. These area of concentrated poverty tend to be places that lack hope and many residents become trapped in the despair and hopelessness of the environment. But just like policy created these community’s policy and the commitment of investors that want to see their communities changed are able to use their dollars to vote! Understanding Crowd Investing Securing capital for businesses and real estate development for communities of color has always be a very daunting task and in some cases it has been flatly denied by government policy such as “Redlining”. Since the “Great Recession” it has been increasingly difficult for businesses and real estate developers to secure finance through traditional channels. As a result, more and more businesses are turning to crowdinvesting to raise the necessary funds. Online investors have been quick to respond to the growing number of investment opportunities and offers and, as a result, crowd investing is growing by leaps and bounds. The process has been slower in communities of color for a number of reasons, but Buy the Block and WeCycl have a mission to provide the needed education and platforms that will position our communities to take full advantage of this President Obama era law. What is Crowdinvesting Crowd investing is the term given when a large group of people, the crowd, co-invest in people, real estate. or business online. Crowd investing encompasses both equity and debt forms of investing as well as hybrid forms of the two. Those investing together don’t necessarily know each other before they decide to invest. The JOBS Act was signed into law by President Obama in 2012, allowing companies and real estate developers to acquire funding through online portals from non-accredited investors, which roughly accounts for 97 percent of the population in the United States. On May 16, 2016, Title III of the JOBS Act, also known as regulation crowdfunding, or crowdinvesting was the last section to be implemented by the SEC. With such a large pool of potential investors looking to enter the market, it would seem that the crowdfunding and investment communities would be extremely welcoming of Title III — but it seems like the exact opposite is happening. This could be because not enough is understood about this type of crowdinvesting. As a consultant who has participated in all types of crowdfunding, I’ve seen significant benefits to all platforms, including crowdinvesting.

cheakwoolfolk.com

Equity Crowdinvesting Equity crowdfunding is the process where investors (i.e. the ‘crowd’) invest in an early-stage unlisted company (a company that is not listed on a stock market) or in a real estate development in exchange for shares in that company or the project. The shareholder will then have partial ownership of a company or the real estate project and will be in position to profit should the company or the project do well. But the opposite is also true, so if the company fails investors can lose some, or all, of their investment money. Previously only wealthy individuals, venture capitalists and angel investors, could invest in startups and these real estate deals. Crowdinvesting platforms have helped democratize the investment process by opening the door to a larger pool of potential investors -- “the crowd”. Debt Crowdinvesting Debt based crowdinvesting encompasses several different types of crowd based lending. These include mini-bonds, peer-to-peer lending (sometimes known as ‘peer-2-peer’ or ‘P2P’ lending) and invoice financing. Essentially, a large amount of retail investors (the crowd) lend money through a platform to a business, real estate development project. In removing many of the middlemen that would be involved if the transaction happened through a bank, debt based crowdfunding can keep the costs down for borrowers while giving the lenders (the crowd) improved rates of return. The Promise of Crowdinvesting Crowdinvesting provides the best opportunity to transform our communities in the shortest amount of time. Crowdinvesting, just like regular equity investment, allows entrepreneurs to sell shares of their business to private shareholders, shares that can potentially be sold later at a much higher price per share. That's how you attract real investment capital, and that is why crowdinvesting will eclipse venture capital funding as the leading source of startup capital by 2020. Today, black entrepreneurs and real estate developers can tap the $1.3 trillion in spending power in the community and transform the average African-American into an investor and consumer that allows money to circulate in our communities building individual wealth and accumulated community wealth. The process of locavesting and crowdinvesting will create jobs and wealth in the black community.

Aug/Sept18 206

Locavesting, Crowdinvesting, and Recycling Community Dollars Locavesting is a term that I came across in my work as a crowd investing consultant. I will state for the record that my interest in crowdinvesting lean much more toward local real estate development and local business development than towards the tech startups. I believe that underserved communities must consolidate and recycle their wealth through real estate development and local business development that provides job creation and wealth generation in their community first. According to a Locavestor blog post written by Amy Cortese “Small businesses—which by definition are locally owned—create two out of every three jobs in the U.S., employ half the private workforce and generate half of private GDP.” “They create local wealth by keeping money circulating locally—that’s called the local multiplier effect. They provide the foundation for a healthy and diversified local tax base, and contribute to the health and well-being of their communities.” Access to Capital Access to capital is the number one issue facing many local businesses no matter the size or type of business, but in communities of color accessing capital through traditional methods is almost impossible. Even when the owners have the education and experience accessing business capital is highly unlikely. Big banks, which dominate the market, approve just 2 out of 10 small business loan requests. The odds are worse for women and minority-owned firms: Just $1 out of every $23 in small business bank loans goes to women-owned businesses, for example, even though they represent 30% of all small firms. In the equity space, less than 1% of all businesses receive venture capital funding—and most of that is invested in just three states. The Convergence of Locavesting and Crowdinvesting When we look into the investment portfolios of most individual investors we will find stocks and bonds of large multinational companies that very often send jobs and profits overseas. The new retail investor class that crowdinvesting creates is very cash rich and rarely finds itself being invested in local businesses that as stated above are the economic drivers of our local communities. How do we change that dynamic? How do we channel more capital to productive use—to the small businesses that create jobs, spur innovation and build strong local economies? Well, crowdinvesting is the vehicle that will be able to transfer this capital to small local businesses and real estate development.

From Consumer to Investor There is latent potential capital that is being used only as consumer dollars that are leaving the black community within six hours of being earned. The vast majority of that money is not being saved or invested only spent as quickly as it is being earned. One solution is the junction between crowdinvesting and locavesting where community members are willing to invest as little as $100 in local businesses and real estate development. Then become customers and brand advocates for the businesses that they have invested in and have a financial interest in being successful. Crowdinvesting and locavesting provide a platform to increase the viability of community based business enterprises. The successful business owners can organize themselves into the next generation of investors and developers as a local investment group. Crowdinvesting Benefits Raise capital from your customers, so now your customers are owners! Crowdinvesting is a way to connect with the people. It provides a platform predicated on neighborhood and community among residents, business owners and real estate developers. By allowing customers and community residents to invest in companies and real estate developments focused on bettering their lived experiences, entrepreneurs and real estate developers are providing opportunity for residents to literally take ownership of their futures. This is a win-win situation and an immense benefit of crowdinvesting. Crowdinvesting provides a new opportunity! Professors, politicians, and community activist have touted the value of black people taking all the money we spend on clothes, shoes, and hair, and put it into investing or starting a business. Well, it would be impossible to take all of our money and invest it businesses or real estate, but we can set aside a portion of our dollars to invest in the people that desire to start a business or develop real estate and that have the required temperament and skills to be an entrepreneur or real estate developer and invest in them. Crowdinvesting provides investment opportunities that have never in our history in America existed!

Crowdinvesting is the answer to raising capital and marketing your business! The U.S. rate of entrepreneurship has declined over the past 30 years, but entrepreneurial activity in the African American community has increased. The problem is access to capital. Black entrepreneurs start businesses, but—often—do not have access to the capital necessary to market and grow those businesses over time. Data from the 2015 Survey of Business Owners shows that the number of businesses majority-owned by Black women grew 67 percent between 2007 and 2012, compared to 27 percent for all women and 13 percent for White women. Nielsen quantifies that growth at 1.5 million Black woman majority-owned businesses as of 2015. Crowdinvesting provides a platform for these black women to share the risk and reward of entrepreneurship with their community as investors and consumers.

Crowdinvesting Empowers the Black Community Crowdinvesting has the potential of unleashing $1.3 trillion in black buying power to fund black businesses and real-estate projects and as one of the greatest wealth building opportunities ever made available to the African American community. But none of this will come to fruition without us taking action on the opportunities that crowdinvesting have brought to the table in our community. African Americans have historically been frozen out of wealth building opportunities necessary to build generational wealth. Usually, when wealth building opportunities have been made available, it was only after other communities had access. This makes crowdinvesting singularly unique in African American history. Crowdinvesting allows black investors and entrepreneurs to have access from the beginning and can share in the economic gains made by startups growing and hiring. Black consumers—trendsetters—can use their dollars and influential platform to select which products, services, and solutions get funded from the beginning. Conclusion Crowdinvesting is a great opportunity to both support local business and build livable communities. It provides an opportunity for small businesses, the ones that have the hardest time finding funding, to get investments from those likely to patronize them: local residents. It puts business owners in a place to create a different narrative about their business and who they serve, while allowing them to focus their marketing and fundraising effort in a concentrated area, saving time and money. Goldman Sachs estimates that crowdinvesting has the potential to be a $1.3 trillion industry. For diverse founders, crowdinvesting can be a game changer for companies and real estate developers seeking investment. It's a wealth-building opportunity for investors previously restricted from investing in startups.

FUTURE OF AGRICULTURE GROWS AT FAIRS

The importance of agriculture is abundant - from the food we eat, the major industries it supports and the benefits it provides to our environment. But looking ahead, in order for agriculture to continue to advance, it's essential to educate and inspire young minds, invest in the next generation and turn today's youth into tomorrow's leaders. That's where youth agriculture organizations come in. According to Christi Korzekwa, senior vice president of marketing at Tractor Supply Company, the nation's largest rural lifestyle retailer, the future of farming is in the hands of these young leaders. "Organizations like the 4-H and FFA play an integral role in educating youth and fostering the importance that agriculture plays within our society," said Korzekwa. "It's important to inspire these young members while providing opportunities to showcase their achievements and form strong relationships within their communities." Across the country, state and county fairs have a long tradition of doing just that - bringing people together, promoting community and connecting all ages. Members of youth agricultural organizations are familiar faces at these events. For them, state and county fairs are more than just an experience - they serve as a platform. Through fair experiences and involvement in youth agricultural programs, 4-H and FFA students are growing into the agriculture leaders of tomorrow through: Community connection Fairs are community events at their core. They serve as a great platform for young people to connect with other members of the community. These relationships open the door for future contributions, increased civic activity and even boosted confidence.

Leadership experience Through creating, executing and presenting agricultural projects, fairs empower youth and give them an opportunity to develop their passions. Recognition Young people flourish when their hard work is recognized. It builds confidence and passion for what they do, as well as supports the larger rural community. Competition The importance of good sportsmanship can never be overstated. Similarly, neither can the importance of healthy competition. Competing in fairs helps drive individuals to work toward a tangible goal, grow confidence and get inspired by what they are doing and what their peers are doing. To honor these young students' achievements and foster community connection, Tractor Supply has begun its fourth annual "Follow Us to the Fair" Tour, an interactive experience that travels to state and county fairs across the country. Happening now through Nov. 10, the tour will hit 24 fairs across the country to connect with local communities and celebrate the role 4-H and FFA youth play in making their communities better places. Last year, Tractor Supply recognized 95 hardworking 4-H and FFA members during special ceremonies along the tour for their exceptional community contributions through its "Great Neighbor" Essay Contest. The essay contest is back for its second year to continue giving well-deserved recognition to 4-H and FFA youth. Tractor Supply will celebrate more than 100 award recipients from this year's contest along the tour. Winners were selected from hundreds of applicants who were encouraged to submit a short essay detailing a specific 4-H or FFA experience and how it has influenced their development as a great neighbor in their community. At each location along the "Follow Us to the Fair" Tour, members of the community are sure to be inspired by the incredible work showcased by America's young people participating in 4-H and FFA and how they are making an impact on the future of the agriculture industry. In addition to honoring these youth, the "Follow Us to the Fair" Tour features free, family-friendly activities and prizes for community members to enjoy during their fair experience. To stay up-to-date on the tour and learn more about the interactive experience, follow Tractor Supply Company on Facebook or visit www.TractorSupply.com/FairTour.

Protecting your peace of mind, and your bottom line

Aug/Sept18 216

How big is your retirement nest egg? Is there a chance you could outlive it? Even if you're socking money into your 401(k) every paycheck like clockwork, that's a question worth pondering. Americans are living longer, more active, younger lives. They say that 60 is the new 40, and if you look around at who we used to call "senior citizens," you'll see people in their prime. That's the good news. It also presents a problem. We're all facing a silent, growing crisis. Study after study, including financial research organization LIMRA's 2016 Secure Retirement Study, shows that many Americans underestimate their retirement expenses. Today, retirement isn't the end of your life, it's a transition point. It's about enjoying the fruits of your labors without the stress of your 9-to-5. Will you have enough money to do that for the rest of your life? Kent Sluyter, president of Prudential Annuities, says the first step toward achieving that goal is to change your mindset. We're all programmed to think about retirement savings, contributing to that 401(k) and accumulating wealth month after month and year after year. That's important, no doubt, but it's only one part of the retirement puzzle. It's also about generating regular income during retirement, so you're not simply depleting your accumulated retirement savings with nothing coming in to replenish the pot. One way to get a regular "paycheck" during retirement, Sluyter says, is with annuities. But they're not top of mind for many people, and misinformation and confusion is floating around out there, even in financial advisors' offices. "The annuities market is at an inflection point," says Sluyter. "Annuities are passed over by many consumers and investors because they are often perceived as expensive and unnecessary." Annuity sales fell 8 percent in 2017, according to LIMRA data. Observers attribute much of the drop to the Department of Labor's Fiduciary Rule that governs the way financial professionals sell and market annuities. The rule made it less attractive for many to sell annuities and created a great deal of media coverage that amplified existing negative perceptions of them. Annuities have a reputation of being complex, which only increases the risk of their being misunderstood. However, annuities can serve a critical purpose within a retirement portfolio among a combination of strategies, investments and products. cheakwoolfolk.com

That's why several companies, including Prudential, recently established the Alliance for Lifetime Income with the goal of promoting greater understanding of how annuities can protect retirement income and help grow retirement savings. "Through the Alliance, we're fostering clarity and simplicity, so consumers have confidence in lifetime income solutions such as annuities," says Sluyter. Annuity 101 What are annuities, exactly, and how do they differ from other retirement savings? Here's a short course in Annuity 101. An annuity is an insurance product that guarantees income. Just like an insurance policy, you pay into it, often in a lump sum, and it guarantees you monthly, quarterly or yearly payouts for the rest of your life. There are three different types: Fixed annuity. These allow you to lock in a rate of earning that, even over lengthy periods of time, remain unaffected by market ups and downs. Indexed annuity. This is tied to a stock index, giving the annuity the potential to grow if the index goes up. If it goes down, you still get any minimum rate of return you agreed to when you bought it. Variable annuity. If you've got high risk tolerance, this may be the best choice for you. Your lump sum is invested, there's no minimum interest rate guarantee and you may lose money. Why are more consumers investing in annuities? Sluyter explains: Recent equity market volatility is making consumers nervous. Combine that with better clarity from the U.S. Department of Labor about the Fiduciary Rule, and annuities are once again becoming more attractive. Current industry expectations are for a slight uptick in sales this year. The 2017 Language of Retirement study found most Americans favor financial strategies that offer guaranteed lifetime income. Ninety percent of all consumers who responded to the survey are very or somewhat interested in receiving lifetime income, which is what an annuity can provide. The industry has evolved beyond traditional variable annuities, offering new, more flexible options such as fixed indexed annuities, which can provide protection and are tied to one or more indexes, rather than direct equity performance. The bottom line is that protected retirement income can help provide much-needed peace of mind for many Americans. Annuities are issued by The Prudential Insurance Company of America, Pruco Life Insurance Company (in New York, by Pruco Life Insurance Company of New Jersey), located in Newark, NJ (main office), or by Prudential Annuities Life Assurance Corporation located in Shelton, CT. (main office). Variable annuities are distributed by Prudential Annuities Distributors, Inc., Shelton, CT. All are Prudential Financial companies and each is solely responsible for its own financial condition and contractual obligations.

SMALL

What drives someone to take the risk and start their own business?

BUSINESSES

In many cases, it's the knowledge that they can offer a great product or introduce new solutions to old problems. Passion and determination put entrepreneurs at the forefront of innovation.

AND THE BENEFITS OF CONSCIOUS CAPITALISM BY: BPT

What's remarkable about so many small and medium-sized businesses today is that it's not just the bottom line they're after. Businesses are more focused than ever on socially and environmentally conscious causes. Take, for example, small business Bayou with Love, who partnered with Dell to create a jewelry line using recycled gold from old computer motherboards. The jewelry line is just one example of a small business prioritizing doing good for the planet.

Cuvee Coffee practices direct trade, a model that considers environmental, financial and social sustainability as well as personal relationships. It builds partnerships with farmers who are good stewards of the land, pay fair wages to their workers and are often leaders in their communities. Cuvee then pays well above market prices for their coffee and in return, the company gets the very best coffee and the farmers make substantial profits.

By using ethical and altruistic principles to guide business practices, these entrepreneurs practice what many call "conscious capitalism," and investors are taking notice.

Investments from angel investors and venture capitalists have helped these businesses play their part in a national and global trend toward social betterment in business.

Here are a few ways small businesses can benefit from conscious capitalism.

It opens the door to more capital from investors

When a company launches a humanitarian initiative or implements an ethical program, people pay attention.

According to Fundivo, angel investments in altruistic businesses have been steadily growing since 2002 and roughly four jobs are created per investment. Moreover, a recent study from The Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investing reported that under sustainable and responsible investing guidelines, a total of $8.72 trillion was made in 2016, showing a 33 percent increase since 2014.

Increased networking opportunities through crowdsourcing

By helping businesses reach like-minded changemakers, the tech industry has made it easier for small businesses to maintain a conscious mission statement along with a profitable bottom line.

cheakwoolfolk.com

In particular, funding for socially-conscious businesses has become more easily achievable through crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Even Kickstarter owners Yancey Strickler and Perry Chen insisted that their crowdfunding platform become a Benefit Corporation, ensuring they remain focused on their mission to bring creative projects to life rather than simply increasing the size of their own profits. These crowdsourcing platforms are an efficient way for companies to find investors, but also to network and get their message out to a broader public. Cuvee Coffee, founded by Mike McKim, partners with non-profits like Livestrong and ‘Austin Food & Wine Alliance.’ McKim is also actively involved in Bunker Labs, an organization to help military veterans and their spouses start and grow businesses.

A boost from tech At the center of many altruistic businesses is the robust use of technology, which has allowed many highly successful small businesses to support social and environmental causes. It's not only that having dependable and easy-to-use technology is critical for these businesses, but many tech giants have implemented programs to support conscious capitalism in small businesses. For instance, as one of the world's leading IT suppliers, Dell has been particularly passionate about helping businesses with an eye for social change and environmental consciousness. Through its 2020 Legacy of Good plan, which outlines its own sustainability goals, it has helped small businesses use technology in a way that drives progress and social change. Dependable and affordable technology is essential to promoting social change, and that's why so many entrepreneurs and investors are realizing that when paired with technology, ethical business practices can do a lot of good and turn a profit.

Back to campus? 7 tips for a manageable college move

Aug/Sept18 222

BYÂ BPT

In many areas of the country leaves are turning, apple orchards are attracting crowds, football teams are starting practice and nighttime is bringing a chill to the air. For better or worse, that means college students' thoughts are turning to studying and everything else that goes with campus life. This year, some 15.2 million students are slated for enrollment in America's public and private post-secondary institutions, up from 15 million last year. If you're a student or parent, that means it may be time to transport key belongings to a new living space. That process can be emotionally bittersweet, even without the logistical challenges of packing, carrying, unpacking and installing multiple loads of gear. Fortunately, forewarned is forearmed, and there's much you can do to make the process easier for everyone involved. Consider the following suggestions for making a move to college efficient and frictionfree. cheakwoolfolk.com

1. Be selective. When packing, use your college-provided checklist as a guide, setting aside the essential items needed to make your first term at school convenient and comfortable. Remember that college dorm rooms and apartments tend to be small, so avoid bringing unnecessary clothing, knickknacks or valuables and plan to revisit home to retrieve seasonal items later on. 2. Assemble your tools. You're likelier to do a better job packing if the right tools are at your fingertips. Secure cardboard boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, moving blankets and/or markers well before your move, and make sure you call at least two weeks ahead to reserve your moving vehicle at PenskeTruckRental.com. A 12- to 16-foot truck is often perfectly sized to transport the contents of a dorm room or apartment, but such rentals tend to get booked up quickly during the ultra-busy summer and fall moving seasons. 3. Identify everything. Start packing several days ahead so the process seems less burdensome, saving daily-use items for the last 48 hours. Mark the outside of packed boxes with descriptions so contents are unmistakable and will be easy to find even if mixed with other students' belongings.

Aug/Sept18 224

4. Keep crucial items separate. Instead of inadvertently packing away important papers, identification, credit cards, medications, glasses or contacts and other important items, set aside a "carryon" bag you'll keep in your car during your travels. 5. Pack your truck strategically. Use your space well by positioning heavier items in the back of your vehicle before proceeding with lighter items. That optimizes the vehicle's power and allows you to fit smaller items into smaller spaces. 6. Drive safely. Getting behind the wheel of a moving truck need not be intimidating as long as you keep a few precautions in mind. Handling the extra size and weight requires that you avoid sharp turns, brake earlier before stopping and navigate around low branches or building overhangs. Depending on the length of your drive you may also wish to pre-map your route, review weather forecasts, avoid rush hour and leave yourself extra time for breaks, refueling and unloading. 7. Stay secure. Unfortunately, students are often targeted for theft during the hectic moving process. Protect your belongings by parking only in well-lit and well-attended areas when you stop, and padlocking the back doors of your vehicle when it's not in use. Back-to-college time can be ultra-busy while filled with anticipation and hope for what lies ahead. For more tips on making your move to campus smooth and easy, visit PenskeTruckRental.com.

The “Work Less, More Success” Guide to Time Management! By Laura Stack, MBA, CSP

The “Work Less, More Success” Guide to Time Management! Since 1992, I've dedicated my career to teaching people how to do less while achieving more. American workers need this relief now more than ever. In the past decade, we've worked harder and done more with less than at any time since the Great Depression. Unfortunately, the pay hasn't kept pace with our efforts, and we often excel at the expense of our health, relationships, and free time. People are tired of “do more with less” and want to “do less and achieve more”! Overwork may be slowly killing you, emotionally, physically, and/or spiritually. But it doesn't have to. Often, overwork stems from taking the wrong approach to structuring one's schedule. I have a solution to offer—one that will significantly reduce your task load and help you rebalance your work/life ratio in your favor. In my new book, What to Do When There's Too Much To Do: Reduce Tasks, Increase Results, and Save 90 Minutes a Day, which hits bookstores on June 26, 2012, I introduce my breakthrough Productivity Workflow Formula™ (PWF). The PWF's core message is simple: reduce, reduce, reduce! It's always better to do less, not more, so you can do better, more focused work. In this article, I'll give you a sneak preview of the six steps of the PWF. Step 1: Determine What To Do: REDUCE YOUR TO-DO LIST Too often, we overwork ourselves by doing what doesn’t matter much or what someone else could do. You can remedy this by studying your work requirements closely and then zeroing in on what truly matters. Use the medical concept of triage to reduce your to-do list to manageable proportions. The emergency room doesn’t treat patients in the order they walk in the door; you shouldn’t work in the order tasks arrive in your inbox or by who screams the loudest. Remain flexible at all times, realizing priorities can shift on the fly, with new high-priority tasks muscling their way into the workflow and pushing aside less-important items. Quit thinking of your To Do list as a Must Do list, and in general, stop doing things that lack long-term consequences for your job. Delegate out low-profit or low-priority items. Take what remains and sort them into a Master "someday" list, where you track important but non-urgent tasks, and a High Impact Task (HIT) list of items you need to work on right away.

The “Work Less, More Success” Guide to Time Management! By Laura Stack, MBA, CSP

Master List tasks might include things like long-term strategies, hiring a new assistant, and reviewing basic French terms before you visit the Paris office. Your HIT List should consist of the items that keep workflow humming along: new and ongoing projects, milestones and deadlines, and critical items you need to accomplish every day. Your Master List flows to your HIT list on a dynamic, daily basis. Just as important as your To Do list is your Not To Do list. Spell out the things you refuse to waste your time on, such as multitasking, most meetings, handling brushfires, and procrastination. Finally, get rid of general timewasters like arriving late, excessive Facebook time, and superfluous socializing. Step 2: Schedule Time to Do It: REDUCE YOUR OBLIGATIONS Once you've identified your key tasks, make the time to do them. Remember, time management really boils down to self-management: the willingness to stop misusing time and practice self-discipline. While you’re not going to waste time during the workday, you’re not trying to do it all. Block out time for your critical HIT lists tasks right on your calendar. Work to reduce your obligations by adopting the computer science concept of "caching." This involves developing the ability to add, drop, and refuse new data on the fly, in order to streamline your workload. I call this "availability caching." When you find yourself at or near maximum capacity, it helps make your decisions about who and what to give your time to more automatic, objective, and logical. Speaking of refusing data: learn to say "no" in a polite yet firm way. Don't let your coworkers talk you into accepting tasks that either belong to them or you lack time to handle. Ask your boss to prioritize projects when he or she tries to overload you. Meanwhile, keep a firm hand on your own tendency to wander. Don't derail yourself between tasks; exercise clarity, discernment, and vision to make the right choices "in the moment," because even tiny time intervals count. Step 3: Focus Your Attention: REDUCE YOUR DISTRACTIONS In this step, you reduce distractions so you can hone your focus to razor sharpness. Once you know exactly what you should be doing and have captured time to do it, you must focus on completing that important task. Distractions represent some of the worst productivity hurdles; even if they drag your attention away for just a few seconds at a time, they can cause you to lose your train of thought and fall out of the productive focus in which you accomplish your best work.

The “Work Less, More Success” Guide to Time Management! By Laura Stack, MBA, CSP

Take steps to ease external distractions like people chatting in the hallway, interruptions from co-workers, or traffic past your office or cubicle. If nothing else, you can close your door (assuming you have one), or take your laptop into an empty conference room, or establish signals to let your co-workers know when you'd prefer they not disturb you. To keep your electronics from repeatedly shattering your focus, turn off email alarms and instant messaging and let your calls roll over to voicemail. Internal distractions often prove more dangerous than external ones, because they represent hurdles we put up ourselves. We don't intend to waste time but inevitably do it with gossiping, socializing, procrastinating, and constantly checking email. Ironically, some of the worst internal distractions come from efforts to increase personal productivity. Perfectionism, for example, often backfires, because trying to predict everything that could possibly go wrong means you never get started—and when you do get to work, you have a hard time letting go. But few internal distractions hurt productivity as much as multitasking. Trying to do too much at once divides your attention, and one task actually gets in the way of the next. You lose track because you switch between tasks too often. Single-tasking works better: instead of juggling several tasks, focus on one until you've reached a natural stopping point (or you've completed it), and then move on to the next. Step 4: Process New Information: REDUCE PROCESSING TIME Streamline your information flow, and you'll inevitably cut back on your time expenditures. Make setting up an efficient filing system one of your first tasks. Develop a simple, noun-based labeling scheme, and apply it rigorously to your electronic and paper files. No document should ever take you more than a minute or so to find. You'll also need a reliable personal time management system—some variety of organizer, whether paper, electronic, or hybrid, where you can keep track of all your schedules and contacts. Just make sure it meets the HUG criteria: it must be Handy, Usable, and Garbage-free. Involuntary data inflow, especially email and phone calls, will likely represent a bigger problem. You can cut back on their influence by limiting your exposure to just a few times per day and processing your inboxes down to zero each time you do check, triaging on the fly. Because most work arrives via email, you should follow some foundational principles to reduce processing time:  

   

The Start-to-Finish Rule The Three-Minute Rule The Empty Inbox Rule The Discipline Rule

When you use these rules in conjunction with my original 6-D Information Processing System™, you can reduce the time you spend handling your inflowing information to a much more manageable level. Step 5: Close the Loop: REDUCE INEFFIENCIES Next, reduce your inefficiencies by determining what does and doesn't work for you. Constantly refine your workflow processes, reworking or replacing components if they break down or just don't seem as efficient as they might be. Other people may present your most difficult barriers to closing the loop. Since you can't control the actions of your co-workers, try to make your interactions with them easier. Start with precision communication that cuts down on unproductive "noise" like hedging and passive language. Get right to the point and ask for acknowledgement on everything. If you don't completely understand what someone asks of you, keep asking questions until you do. Don't give up if they get impatient—it’s better than doing the wrong thing or over-delivering—both a waste of time and energy. Micromanagers represent a special case. No amount of productivity training and time management finesse can save you from a micromanager's ego trip if you don't take the bully by the horns ASAP. If they hinder your workflow, confront them about it; they may back off. Otherwise, find ways to work around them—or find a job elsewhere. Whether a blockage is human, process-oriented, or mechanical, never hesitate to step in and try to fix it. If you can't find a way to do so, then go around it and move on to things you can fix. Teamwork is crucial here. Do your best to ease the way for everyone involved. In addition to helping the team develop work plans, set and achieve milestones, and reach deadlines, ensure stability by establishing contingency plans to handle crises and other emergencies, such as unexpected absences. Step 6: Manage Your Capacity: REDUCE ENERGY EXPENDITURES The best-laid workflow plan will fall apart if you don't have the energy to sustain it. Therefore, Step 6 focuses on keeping yourself physically and mentally fit, through a combination of good sleep, diet, exercise, and preservation of personal happiness. Taken together, these form the hub that links and strengthens the other PWF steps.

The “Work Less, More Success” Guide to Time Management! By Laura Stack, MBA, CSP

Begin by recognizing the limits of your personal "battery." You can only go so far before you run out of energy, so know when to slow down and recharge. Don't skip your scheduled breaks—stretch breaks, meals, personal time, weekends, and vacations—or fatigue may eventually overwhelm you. You can't stay productive if you don't get good, restorative sleep every night. Like it or not, your muscles require rest, your body chemistry needs time to reset, and your subconscious mind has to process new information. Do your best to encourage sleep on a regular schedule by establishing a peaceful environment, and avoid using your bedroom as an office. Excess weight will also drag you down, so keep an eye on your diet, focusing on portion control and energy-boosting foods. Pair that with regular exercise. This can include anything from "subversive" activities you can engage in while going about your normal workday (like taking the stairs rather than the elevator), to working out at the gym twice a week. Don't forget your mental health. If you can't maintain a high level of enthusiasm for your work, you can't stay at your productive best. Seek out happiness by making empowered choices, surrounding yourself with fun things, spending time with your family, doing nice things for people, cherishing yourself, and finding ways to laugh at adversity. All this will help you maintain a fresh, can-do attitude. Staying on Top of Your Life There's no doubt your career is important: you spend more than half of your waking life either working or preparing to. But you can't let it override everything else. For the sake of your mental and physical health—not to mention your friends and family—you've got to curb your workaholic tendencies. Yes, working 70-hour weeks can make you fantastically productive...in the short term. But over time, you'll wear down to a ghost of your former self. Eventually something will break, and suddenly, your productivity will drop to nil. Like an overpowered light bulb, you'll produce a lot of heat and light for a while, but suddenly you'll burn out, much sooner than you should. Even if that doesn't happen, don't fool yourself: no matter how hard you work today, you can't guarantee corporate leadership will remember your sacrifice tomorrow. You might end up with a pink slip anyway. Rather than grow old and break down before your time, implement my Productivity Workflow Formula in your career. These six steps are logical, straightforward, and can

Five-minute life hack: Tips to boost your career BY

BPT

The rapid pace of change in jobs means the era of one-and-done learning is over. It no longer matters what you learned in the past - to stay relevant you need to upskill. So if you want to improve your marketability and get ahead in your career, it's time to think about the valuable skills that could open the door to new opportunities. The good news is with tools and online courses on platforms like LinkedIn Learning, you can explore and develop critical skills and interests - right at your fingertips anytime, anywhere. "Experience never gets old, but your skills can," says Marci Alboher, author of The Encore Career Handbook and upcoming LinkedIn Learning instructor. "Re-skilling throughout your career will position you to ensure you're finding meaning in your work, growing in your profession and making an impact along the way."

Here are three tips for kick-starting your learning efforts. 1. Find the time! The #1 career goal for professionals in 2018 is to learn a new skill - but not everyone knows where to fit learning into their daily lives. Here's a tip: In today's ever-connected digital world, we're living in the era of bite-sized learning, where new skills can be honed in minutes on the subway, or while you're eating breakfast. Start by picking 5- to 10-minute windows in your daily routine you don't need to find hours, minutes are fine. For example, try skimming through courses on a Sunday night, and make a wish list of courses to view throughout the week, whenever it's convenient for your busy life. 2. Make it a habit They say a habit is formed in 21 days. Whenever you slot learning into your daily schedule, try to pick a time when you can make it routine - whether it's on the bus during your morning commute, or in the 10 minutes after you brush your teeth at night. You'll be growing in your skills before you know it. Fun fact: LinkedIn Learning also sets a reminder for you, so it's one less thing you have to remember in your day. 3. Pick your skills Today's skills landscape is changing faster than ever - with new technologies and digital techniques emerging at every turn. Whether you want to advance your existing career or begin a new one, start by identifying a few key skills you'd like to hone. For example, people in every job can benefit from learning soft skills that teach you how to get things done or achieve your goals. Soft skills, such as communication and critical thinking, will give you a competitive advantage in the workplace, and you never know when you'll uncover a new passion or side project along the way.
