EDITOR'S LETTER DEC 2017/JAN 2028

Happy Holidays and thanks for all of the support that we’ve received this year as we strive to provide consistent quality content to you. As 2017 comes to a close there are many things that come to mind, some good, and some bad. One of the things that I’ve noticed in the past is that we have a tendency to drag the old and negative things into a new beginning. For 2018 this is simply unacceptable. As we were doing the photo shoot for the December cover I thought about a theme that would sum up the past year and future and the future possibilities. I thought “2017 was successfully naughty and 2018 is going to be a gift.” The logic behind this was my thinking that the things that were most hurtful and negative that occurred in 2017 were only a precursor to the wonderful things that will happen in 2018. Many people have different philosophies on the negative energy that is forever present in our lives, and our reactions are often judged regardless of how these things make us feel. However, these things are designed to help us grow and should be viewed as tools to help us adjust our behaviors so that we can improve ourselves. Often we feel that we must make New Year’s resolutions or promises to ourselves to change our behaviors and help us stay on track with the goals we set. However, I have a different perspective that I’d like to share with you. If you will begin to take small steps to clean the mental and physical clutter out of your life you will begin to grow, your confidence will boost and success is inevitable. It becomes a lifestyle change and you will begin to live for success, instead of feeling like it is something you need to chase. Take the success that you had in 2017 and make a plan to grow them even bigger in 2018. You can do this by doubling down on things that worked for you or your team. Strive to be uniquely yourself and walk into your purpose by doing what you believe. You should also take the failures that you had in 2017 and evaluate what you learned from them. Don’t think of them all as “bad luck” or “bad business” because we create our own luck through our efforts and our grind. These lessons are the most valuable because they shape us in ways that are unique to our personal journey. Self-evaluate, reflect and adjust, but do not stay down, because: “The canvas is no place for a champion.” - “Muhammad Ali” As we step into 2018 it is my hope that we can all become a better version of ourselves. If we are to become a better version then we can change the game. We can change the world. It all starts with that first step when we decide to change ourselves. Happy Holidays from

By BPT

Bluetooth technology is steadily expanding the role of modern hearing aids from tiny marvels that make use of artificial intelligence to process sound into true, state-ofthe-art multimedia hubs now capable of two-way communication. The primary goal of hearing aids has always been to improve speech understanding. While this hasn't changed, manufacturers are now building Bluetooth technology directly into the most advanced hearing aid microchips. This lets consumers directly connect to virtually any wireless electronic device, eliminating the need to wear a body-worn accessory. Let's take a brief look at how the latest Bluetooth hearing aids are transforming the way we live. They can now directly connect to any Bluetooth-enabled phone According to Dr. Elizabeth Thompson, director of business development and veterans affairs at Phonak, previous generations of hearing aids could only directly connect to an iPhone, which greatly limited people's options. "Pew Research Center found only 33 percent of American smartphone owners used an iPhone while a whopping 66 percent used the Android operating system," said Thompson. "Furthermore, another study showed 38 percent of all Americans over age 65 still use a classic flip phone. Until now, there has never been a Bluetooth hearing aid that was truly made for all devices and allowed universal connectivity - including the ability to directly connect to an iPhone, an Android device (e.g., Samsung, LG), or even a classic flip phone that is Bluetooth-ready."

Bluetooth hearing aids enable truly hands-free calls The latest Bluetooth hearing aids allow you to answer a phone call with a simple press of a button on the hearing aid. Built-in microphones on the hearing aids themselves feature automatic voice pickup, allowing people to have two-way conversations through their hearing aids. Thompson stated this is the first time this has ever been done with hearing aids. "This is indeed the first time a hearing aid wearer can have a true hands-free conversation without having to touch the phone at all," she said. "This is especially convenient in the car, where your phone may be in a pocket or purse, or if you need to have a conversation while leaving your phone on the table or countertop, for example if you're cooking." They stream wireless stereo sound directly from your TV According to research firm Statista, Americans spend an average of 4.5 hours per day watching TV. And if you are or live with someone who has hearing loss, you probably know that sometimes the volume of the TV can become an issue. "With a card-sized TV Connector, hearing aid wearers simply plug the device into the back of the TV," added Thompson. "The 'plug and play' TV Connector instantly pairs with Bluetooth hearing aids, allowing viewers to stream high-fidelity TV sound in-stereo at their preferred volume level, independent of other viewers. Wearers have reported a markedly better experience in understanding dialogue, especially when the person on TV is talking fast." Bluetooth hearing aids are available right now While all of these new advances may sound like the future, hearing aids with built-in Bluetooth technology are available today. For more information, visit tryphonak.com or find a licensed hearing care professional who has been specially trained in fitting the latest hearing aid technology.

SAVE YOUR BREATH FACEBOOK COMMUNITY OFFERS TIPS FOR LIVING WITH RESPIRATORY DISEASE By: BPT Breathing isn't something Orlando, FL, resident John Coffey takes for granted. Five years ago, the software company owner could barely make it through a conference call without a coughing episode or feeling winded. Days he used to spend with his daughter at the local theme parks became few and far between. Coffey continued to limit his activity and changed his lifestyle to try to reduce the symptoms that made it so difficult to breathe. He quickly realized a personal fitness goal only intensified his symptoms and strained his breathing even more. At that point, Coffey knew he needed to get to the bottom of what he was feeling every day. Coffey soon found himself in a pulmonologist's office where he underwent a breathing function test. It was then that his doctor diagnosed the non-smoker with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). COPD is a progressive disease of the lungs that makes it hard to breathe.1 "Progressive" means that it gets worse over time.1 Minimizing exposure to risk factors, such as smoking, air pollution and exposure to dust or chemical fumes in the environment or workplace, may help prevent COPD.1 As of 2010, there were more than 14 million people identified as having COPD in the US and another estimated 12 million people who remain undiagnosed.2 At first, COPD may only present with mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. As the disease gets worse, symptoms usually become more severe.1

Receiving a diagnosis such as COPD or living with any breathing condition can be confusing or isolating. But out of determination to not let his disease define him, Coffey did his homework to better understand what he was experiencing. He turned to informational websites and online forums to educate himself as much as possible and found strength in others' stories and knowing that he was not alone. As Coffey can attest, every person's journey with COPD is different. With this in mind, AstraZeneca created the Save Your Breath Facebook community in an effort to create a place where patients can share their breathing stories and find inspiration and empowerment. Save Your Breath is an online community for the millions of people who suffer from shortness of breath brought on by conditions like asthma or COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. As a designated judgment-free zone, Save Your Breath is a place where anyone can freely receive support and learn about their condition and find tips to help manage their symptoms. For people living with respiratory diseases, the sense of community combined with relevant information about their condition can help them believe in themselves and achieve small, tangible goals, one step at a time. Since its creation, more than 160,000 people have joined Save Your Breath and many use it as a place to connect with a supportive community.3

If you or someone you love suffers from a respiratory health condition, there is hope and support. Visit the Save Your Breath Facebook community page to join the conversation and learn CHEAKWOOLFOLK.COM DEC 2017/ JAN 2018 more.

For Coffey, his advice for others living with COPD is to follow your doctor's advice and not let this disease keep you down. He's established a great relationship with his pulmonologist who has helped him find a treatment approach that works for him and helps him do the little things he loves. Is there a better way to handle renovation dust? There is a better way to handle renovation dust: by collecting it right at the source like the pros do. Professional contractors are used to dealing with renovation dust, and given the volume of work they do, they create dust far more frequently and in much greater volumes than the average homeowner or DIYer. Rather than spend valuable time on prep work or post-project cleanup or suffer through the use of uncomfortable dust masks, they use dust collection tools that capture and contain dust immediately as it's created, before it can become a mess or airborne health hazard.

How Johnson tackled her dust-free renovation. Because of their tight timeline, Johnson and her husband decided to take on some of their renovation themselves using supplies purchased at their local hardware store, but they let the professionals handle the tricky floor/banister redo.

To repair their drywall, they patched the damaged areas using joint compound and a drywall sander, which together cost about $130. To make the sanding process dust-free, they added a Dust Deputy, which they connected directly to the drywall sander and to their wet/dry vacuum. They found that this combination captured virtually all the dust generated by the sanding. They noticed no dust in the air, and the Dust Deputy prevented the fine drywall dust from clogging their vacuum filter.

Even though they had the flooring contractor tackle the floor and banister, they saved a few dollars by removing the varnish from the banister and other hard-to-reach areas themselves. To do this, they applied a gel varnish remover using a brush (together about $20), then scraped the wet varnish residue using a Viper Scraper attached to their Dust Deputy and wet/dry vacuum. The scraper captured the residue, and the Dust Deputy contained it for disposal, without it ever reaching, or damaging, their vacuum.

Their big splurge was on the floor refinishing, which they left to the pros to tackle (about $2,500). To keep that process dust-free, they selected a dust-free contractor in their area who used a cyclonic Oneida Vortex dust collection system with HEPA filtration. In the end, they finished the project virtually dust-free and just in time for their family reunion, and they were very pleased with the results!

Survey Findings Highlight That Most Survivors Don't Realize Another Stroke Can be Prevented

CHEAKWOOLFOLK.COM

BPT

DEC 2017/ JAN 2018

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and also a leading cause of disability in the United States. Approximately 800,000 people in the U.S. have a stroke every year[i] with nearly 1 in 4 being recurrent strokes.[ii] World Stroke Day is observed on October 29th to raise awareness of stroke risks and treatment and to ensure survivors and caregivers are equipped with the knowledge to prevent another stroke. As a national sponsor of Together to End Stroke®, Bayer® Aspirin is joining the American Stroke Association to spread the word that stroke can be largely preventable and treatable.

Recent findings from a survey conducted by the American Stroke Association® (ASA) among survivors of ischemic (clot-related) strokes and transient ischemic attacks (TIA), their caregivers, and healthcare professionals underscore the critical need to empower these individuals with more education. While knowledge of stroke warning signs and risk factors are fairly high, only eight percent of survivors and caregivers surveyed believe that strokes can be prevented. In reality, up to 80% of recurrent clot-related (ischemic) strokes can be prevented with the right steps such as managing blood pressure and cholesterol, eating healthy, staying active, stopping smoking and a doctor-directed aspirin regimen.

Aspirin is not appropriate for everyone, so be sure to talk to your doctor before you begin an aspirin regimen.

Healthcare professionals (HCPs) are also helping raise awareness, as 84% of those surveyed are talking to their patients about the signs, risks and prevention of secondary stroke. HCPs believe that patients struggle to comply with secondary stroke prevention plans because they don't understand the importance, lack motivation, or don't observe changes quickly enough. They cite that survivors find it most difficult to quit smoking (37%), exercise regularly (29%) and manage their weight (26%).

While most survivors and caregivers believe lifestyle changes are an important part of stroke recovery, many find it difficult to exercise regularly and manage their weight. The most common change survivors make is taking recommended medication (83%) and taking aspirin daily (63%). 58% view high blood pressure as the most important risk factor for stroke and 65% say they consistently control blood pressure as part of their stroke recovery plan.

The survey also found that approximately half of the survivors and caregivers have heard of F.A.S.T., the acronym being used by the American Stroke Association to highlight the most common signs and symptoms of stroke, which are as follows:

F- Face Drooping. Ask the person to smile. Does the face look uneven?A -Arm Weakness. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift down or is it unable to move?S - Speech Difficulty. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Does their speech sound strange? Strange speech could be slurred, the wrong words may come out, or the person is unable to speak.T- Time. Time to call 9-1-1The survey revealed resources to motivate survivors and to make it easier to adopt lifestyle changes are crucial. In addition to support from their healthcare provider, caregivers also play a critical role in enabling survivors to adopt these practices. By arming stroke survivors, caregivers and family members with information on secondary stroke prevention, the American Stroke Association and Bayer® Aspirin can get closer to our goal of helping end stroke.

Visit StrokeAssociation.org for more information and resources about secondary stroke.

Survey Results Show Fewer Than Half of U.S. Women Taking Recommended Vitamins Prior to Pregnancy BPT

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

23

Prenatal vitamins are an important part of pregnancy, supporting the health of both moms and babies. While the "dos" and "don'ts" of health and nutrition during pregnancy are familiar, it is also important to focus on these before becoming pregnant. For example, taking the recommended multivitamins before pregnancy can help prevent certain birth defects.

Taking a multivitamin or prenatal vitamin containing 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day before pregnancy can prevent serious birth defects of the brain and spine. Some studies show that folic acid also may help prevent heart defects and defects to a baby's mouth, called cleft lip or palate.

Almost half of pregnancies in the U.S. are unplanned, so health experts recommend that women of childbearing age take a daily multivitamin containing folic acid, even if they are not trying to get pregnant.

A new survey conducted by the March of Dimes shows that only 34 percent of women ages 18-45 said they started taking a multivitamin or prenatal vitamin before they knew they were pregnant. This number is even lower for Hispanic and African American women - dropping to 27 percent and 10 percent, respectively.

The survey, conducted through a partnership of the March of Dimes and Mission Pharmacal, found that further education is needed so that all women are aware of and understand the key factors that contribute to a healthy pregnancy and birth outcomes.

"While it tends to shock some Americans, more than 120,000 babies, or three percent of all births, will be born with birth defects in the United States this year," said Stacey D. Stewart, President of the March of Dimes. "The results of this survey serve as a reminder of the importance of continually informing women of the benefits of taking a multivitamin with folic acid both before and during pregnancy to improve their own health and that of their future family."

The March of Dimes says that up to seven in 10 of the 3,000 serious birth defects of the brain and spine that occur each year in the U.S. each year could be prevented if all women capable of having a baby took daily multivitamins containing adequate folic acid.

After pregnancy begins, the folic acid recommendation increases to 600 mcg daily. Iron, calcium, vitamin D, DHA and iodine have also been found to play a key role in growth and development for babies during pregnancy.

Prenatal vitamins are multivitamins made just for pregnant women and have more of key nutrients needed during pregnancy. Taking prenatal vitamins every day, along with eating healthy foods, can help provide mom and baby with the nutrients they need before, during and after pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins are available over the counter or can be prescribed by a doctor, and some insurance companies may cover some or all of the cost of prescription versions of prenatal vitamins.

Tips for helping reduce the burden of Alzheimer's caregiving Article contributed by: BPT

Caring for someone with Alzheimer's or other dementias is exceptionally demanding, and especially challenging. The caregiving needs of people living with Alzheimer's are not only often more extensive, but are often needed over many years - even decades. A recent survey by the Alzheimer's Association indicates many caregivers are not getting the help and support they need - a whopping 84 percent of caregivers say they would like more support in caring for someone with Alzheimer's, especially from family members. "Too many people are shouldering the caregiving burden alone," says Ruth Drew, director of information and support services at the Alzheimer's Association. "Many people want or would welcome help, but they are reluctant or just too overwhelmed to ask." Tips for supporting a caregiver Providing help and support to caregivers can be easier than most people think. Even little acts can make a big difference, Drew says. The Alzheimer's Association offers these suggestions: Learn: Educate yourself about Alzheimer's disease - its symptoms, its progression and the common challenges facing caregivers. The more you know, the easier it will be to find ways to help. Build a team: Organize family and friends who want to help with caregiving. The Alzheimer's Association Care Team Calendar is a free, personalized online tool that allows helpers to sign up for specific tasks, such as preparing meals, providing rides or running errands. Give a break: Spend time with the person with dementia, allowing the caregiver a chance to run errands, go to their own doctor's appointment or engage in an activity that helps them recharge. Even one hour could make a big difference in providing the caregiver some relief.

CHEAKWOOLFOLK.COM

DEC 2017/ JAN 2018

Check in: Many caregivers report feeling isolated or alone; make a phone call to check in, send a note or stop by for a visit. Tackle the to-do list: Ask for a list of errands that need to be done. Pick up groceries or dry cleaning, or even offer to shuttle kids to and from activities. Be specific and be flexible: Open-ended offers of support ("Call me if you need anything," or "Let me know if I can help.") may be well-intended, but are often dismissed. Be specific in your offer ("I'm going to the store, what do you need?"). Continue to let the caregiver know that you are there and ready to help. Help for the holidays: Help caregivers around the holidays by offering to help with cooking, cleaning or gift shopping. If a caregiver has traditionally hosted family celebrations, offer your home instead.

Join the fight: Honor a person living with the disease and their caregiver by supporting the Alzheimer's cause. Volunteer at your local Alzheimer's Association office or participate in fundraising events. "It's a mistake to assume caregivers have everything under control," Drew says. "Most caregivers can use and would appreciate help. No one can do everything, but each of us can do something." WHAT TO EXPECT IF YOUR CHILD NEEDS EAR TUBE SURGERY By: BPT Ear tube surgery is one of the most common pediatric procedures in the United States, with more than half a million surgeries performed each year. In fact, by age 3, approximately 1 in 15 children will have had ear tubes. Dr. Robert Bridge, Chief of Otolaryngology at HonorHealth in Phoenix, Arizona, says, "In my practice, we see hundreds of children each year who will need ear tube surgery, and despite how common the surgery is, as parents, we tend to worry." So if you are one of the many parents whose child needs ear tube surgery, read on to learn more about what Dr. Bridge says you can expect leading up to and following the procedure. What is ear tube surgery? Ear tube surgery is a common procedure usually performed by an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) doctor in which ear tubes (tiny, hollow cylinders usually made of plastic or metal) are placed into the eardrum, allowing ventilation to the middle ear. This airway helps alleviate the accumulation of fluid behind the eardrum. Who is a candidate for ear tube surgery? Did you know one of the most common complications of the cold or flu is ear infections? Children who experience frequent ear infections in both ears are common candidates for ear tube surgery because this fluid build-up in the middle ear can lead to hearing loss or speech problems. Additionally, the average age of ear tube patients is between 1 and 3 years old. What can I expect after my child has ear tube surgery? Immediately following surgery, your child may be groggy, grumpy or tired. Each child recovers differently, but after surgery, it's a good idea to take a day off from your normal routine to allow your child time to relax and recover. Children are typically prescribed antibiotic eardrops that must be given multiple times a day, over several days. But these eardrops can come with challenges. Dr. Bridge states that many parents call or return at a post-op visit expressing difficulties administering the eardrops along with the uncertainty that they are administering the medication accurately and completely. However, ENT doctors now have an alternative treatment option available, where the prescription antibiotic is actually placed in the middle ear at the time of ear tube surgery. If your ENT is recommending ear tube surgery, see if this antibiotic treatment may be an option for your child. CHEAKWOOLFOLK.COM

DEC 2017/ JAN 2018

How will ear tube surgery affect my child? Once the middle ear is rid of excess fluid, your child may become more sensitive to noise. "But it's important to remember children are resilient," said Dr. Bridge. "While you may notice a change in your child's hearing, I typically find that by days two and three, parents report their child is back to enjoying their normal activities and are satisfied with the surgery." If your child's ENT recommends ear tube surgery this cold and flu season, here is a quick list of questions to ask your doctor before surgery: * How many hours before the procedure should my child stop eating or drinking? * How soon will I be able to join my child after surgery? * How soon can my child take a bath or go swimming? * Are there any particular activities my child should avoid after surgery? For how long? * How soon after surgery will we need to schedule a follow-up appointment? * Do you offer an antibiotic treatment option that you give during ear tube surgery so I don't have to give ear drops at home? For more information about a single-dose antibiotic given to your child during surgery, ask your child's doctor or visit www.thestruggleisreal.com.

If you are reading this article you have something to be grateful for. This time two years ago I almost died. I realized that GOD left me here for reason. I remember telling God I cannot die on my son's 32nd birthday. I promised GOD that if he allowed me to live I would do HIS WILL to the best of my ability. If you know me, YOU KNOW I love people. I have made it my mission to invest in others. I invest with my time and my resources. I know what it’s like to be without, so I try to the best of my ability to bless others. Laying in Norton's hospital in 2015 GOD CHANGED the game for me. I have been to the places people said I would never go. I have been able to break bread with people they said I would never know. When HE says YES it doesn't matter who says no. I am by far not perfect, but I spend my life implementing CHANGE daily. I love my life and everyone in it. I will never again do anything that does not sit well with my spirit. When God gets ready to take us places everyone cannot go. I am GRATEFUL for my life and for clarity. The knowledge to know sometimes elevation means separation. BE BLESSED.

There are 5 integral elements of effective communication: 1. Thoroughness - Don’t prevaricate. Tell the whole story...not just the parts that line up with your personal needs. So many times, when we are in a bad situation, we don’t want to be judged by the parts of the story that we deem unnecessary to fulfill our specified goal, so we leave our some of the less attractive details. However, for your communication efforts to have complete effectiveness, use a wholistic approach to conveying information. Otherwise, you will just create a patch job that will require multiple acts of revisionary work.

Gay

2. Transparency - Don’t cover up things that may put you in an unfavorable light. Nobody is perfect. Your shortcomings and failures are a necessary part of your testimony. Someone will be blessed by the things you did wrong when your story helps them to foresee and avoid some of the pitfalls they were about to face if they had continued their current path.

SA

Written by Gay L. Polk-Payton

3. Truthfulness - Don’t lie or exaggerate because the truth will find you and expose you sooner or later. You must always make sure that there is no fabrication when information is being conveyed. A lie will always come back to haunt you and then you will be forced into a position where another lie is needed to cover up the initial deception. Sooner or later, the facts will become completely unrecognizable. 4. Temperament - Don’t get mad when people don’t receive you or your words the way you want to be received. It’s impossible to please everyone so don’t spend time obsessing over who accepts who you are and the message you’re attempting to convey. Learn how to walk in your own personal truth with reverence to God and respect for yourself and your fellow man. Everything else will fall into place. 5. Tenacity - Don’t give up if you don’t hit a home run your first time at bat. Life is going to throw you curve ball after curve ball...so keep swinging at the ones you think you can hit, stand firm and ignore the ones that are outside your realm of control and walk off the ones that hit you in the gut. Life is everchanging so adjusting and adapting to the transitions in life is the only hope you have when the time comes to overcome adversity. #gayspsa #communication #gaypolkpayton #gaypolkpaytonwhite CHEAKWOOLFOLK.COM

Who is Breketa Goodwin I was once a woman who poured all her energy into becoming everything others wanted and needed me to be, all while the fear of not being enough haunted me. I was once a woman filled with doubt; and as a result, wasted valuable time dissecting the essence of who I was supposed to be. The woman who I was is not the woman I am today—but that woman did teach me many lessons. Lessons, sown through the plows of painful experience, nurtured by waters of loneliness, and rooted in self-loathing and abuse. The harvest of this crop was plentiful in brokenness and as I examined my barren field I realized that the lessons of the past did not have to kill the fruits of my future. So I began to work tirelessly, seeking tools to help me grow, embrace, and transform through the Truth and power of my story. I have discovered my purpose for people, and it is to live my life in such a way that it is contagious and inspires fruitful growth. My hearts mission is to join hands with you and help you learn to harness your purpose to bear the fruits of abundance in a life well lived. The Journey of Becoming It’s important to know that the Journey of Becoming is the very road beneath you. You must know that though your feet tread upon this ground that it is only you who can take the lead and surpass those who would hold you back from realizing yourself. There is no one but you who can walk this journey and prepare yourself for the abundance of your potential. There will be many people who walk alongside you, I want to be one of those people, but you must remember that ultimately it is you who will carry yourself to your goals, it’s you who must do the work! You may already be opening yourself to your Journey of Becoming or this may be your first steps. Wherever you are in your journey I want you to embrace and claim these three promises for yourself: • • •

BE honest-In order to truly transform you have to become honest with every part of your story the good, the bad, the ugly. As you cannot change what you pretend to ignore! BE Patient- know that this journey is a marathon and not a sprint. You must be patient with yourself as you grow. It didn’t take 21 days for you to form dysfunctional habits so give yourself time to unlearn those same habits. BE open- This journey is all about growth, so as you travel make sure you are open to the many blessing and lesson you will encounter along the way!

This is your Time to Transform

."

Did you know, that as a young man, Abraham Lincoln was a formidable wrestler and out of 300 matches, only lost one? Or that Congress voted for our independence from Britain on July 2, 1776, not on the Fourth of July? Like these facts, there are hundreds of other little-known stories of American history that rarely get told. For instance, while many know about Jackie Robinson and his struggle to break the color barrier, not everyone realizes that even after he successfully joined the Dodgers, the process of desegregation was far from over. "It's worth remembering that it's the end of that 1947 season that really marks Robinson's triumph," says filmmaker Gaspar González, who has produced documentaries for PBS, ESPN and others. "He had endured the hatred and racist threats directed at him to not only prove that he belonged in the Major Leagues but to lead the Brooklyn Dodgers to the World Series. Getting through that season - excelling the way he did - ensured that other players of color would follow." While Robinson opened the doors, what followed was a decades-long struggle to break down America's racial barriers and for the game of baseball to become truly integrated. It's this untold story that González tells in his new film, "A Long Way from Home: The Untold Story of Baseball's Desegregation," which chronicles the struggles and triumphs of the pioneering black and Afro-Latino players who played minor-league ball in small, remote towns where racial segregation remained a fact of life well into the 1960s. These are the men who, before they could live their dreams, first had to beat Jim Crow and follow Jackie Robinson into white professional baseball. The 45-minute documentary sheds light on the struggle toward racial equality in baseball, featuring original interviews with James "Mudcat" Grant, Grover "Deacon" Jones, Jimmy Wynn, J.R. Richard, Tony Pérez and Orlando Cepeda. These former MLB stars endured racism on and off the field to pursue their big-league dreams - ultimately playing a significant role in making America's pastime truly open to all. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of Robinson's trailblazing inaugural season, TV One will show "A Long Way from Home" with an exclusive early preview on video on demand (VOD) of the documentary, available now through Oct. 31. Following its VOD preview, the documentary will be added to TV One's February 2018 broadcast schedule. Funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, "A Long Way from Home" has enjoyed select screenings in Washington, D.C.; Houston; Miami; and the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. "NEH is proud to support this important project, which we hope will inspire broader conversations about the changing meanings of race, equality and freedom in American civic life and culture," said Margaret Plympton, former acting chair, National Endowment for the Humanities. Strong Finish

A new year is swiftly approaching. Take this time to reflect upon 2017 and use it to prepare for 2018. A lot of us can start off the new year with a plan but usually by the end of January we have either forgotten about our plans or we just say forget about it altogether. It is tough but not impossible. Your hard work will not go unnoticed.

I can honestly say that I did not do everything I possibly could have done to achieve my goals and work harder towards the success that I know belongs to me. In the same fashion I can also say that I did a lot of things that I would have never thought was possible. My optimistic attitude comes from my accomplishments and from the energy of those optimistic people I keep in my life. I am proud of myself for trusting the process.

Keep in mind that there is always more work to do. You should never stop. One thing might end for that time but then another thing begins. I would like to leave you with a couple of things that may help you finish the year strong.

1. Positivity

Having a positive attitude will take you further than you may think. Positivity will also help bring the things and people in your life that are most needed. It will also get rid of the things and people in your life that aren’t needed.

2. Action

What is a dream or goal without work. Yes you have to put effort into everything you do. Even though you may keep a positive outlook on things you can never stop. Move...act...work!

3. Consistency

It truly is the key. You have to be consistent in everything that you do. If you start you must continue until you see the results that you desire.

4. Write It

So what that you may not consider yourself to be a writer. Writing your goals down and having a plan will make a big difference in how you proceed. Write the vision and make it plain. It is just something about seeing your vision on paper. It should make you want to work for it all the more.

5. Faith

The biblical definition of faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things unseen. I truly believe that everything we do in life is based on faith. Faith and Hope are twin sisters and they have to reside together. Their twin cousins are Trust and Belief. They all operate as one unit - one family. Trust yourself enough to know that in faith all things will work together.

6. Network

You got to get out and meet likeminded people. These people will help keep you encouraged and inspired when you otherwise may not feel like it. It also may not hurt to get an

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

63

accountability partner. This person will hold you accountable to your goals. We all need a little push and encouragement.

7. Strengths/Weaknesses

Know your strengths verses your weaknesses. This will help you in so many ways and areas of your life. If you know what you are good at then you will be able to use that to help in the areas you are weak. We all struggle with something but the end goal should be that your strengths outweigh your weaknesses not the other way around.

8. Preparation

If you follow all the above then these will lead you to being prepared. You have put in the work and you have set yourself up for success and realistic expectations. When you prepare yourself for what you want you are inevitably telling yourself and putting it out in the atmosphere that you are ready to receive the fruits of your labor.

“Prepare yourself mentally, verbally, physically, and spiritually to become what you are meant to be!” - Korea L. Howard You really can have a strong finish to a new beginning. You got this. Now let’s do it!

On Saturday November 18th I had the honor of acting as the host for the 4th Annual BAYA “Beautiful as You Are” Tea. The event was developed and birthed by Tish Thomas-Frederick. The goal od BAYA is to promote positive selfesteem and self-love in young girls ages 6 to 18. CHEAKWOOLFOLK.COM

The BAYA "Beautiful as You Are" 4th Annual tea allowed each girl to be treated like the queens they truly are and feel special. This was designed to be the ultimate self-esteem building event and it accomplished that goal. The young ladies enjoyed a catered meal, a key note speaker, personal service and photographs all designed to show them they are worthy! The theme for this year’s event was "You're in the presence of Royalty”. The most impressive part of the day was that there was no cost for this event and B.A.Y.A event allowed the young. 5 NUTRITIONISTAPPROVED TIPS FOR BETTER HOLIDAY BAKING By: BPT

'TIS THE SEASON FOR SWEET AND SAVORY TREATS. THE HOLIDAYS BRING LOADS OF GOODIES, BUT THE PROBLEM IS THESE TEMPTATIONS CAN PUT A BIG STRAIN ON YOUR NUTRITION GOALS. IF YOU'RE WHIPPING UP SOME TASTY HOLIDAY DISHES THIS SEASON, YOU DON'T HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN YOUR HEALTH AND FAVORITE INDULGENCES. TRANSFORM ANY RECIPE INTO A HEALTHIER VERSION SIMPLY BY FOLLOWING THESE SMART TRICKS FROM REGISTERED DIETITIAN DAWN JACKSON BLATNER, RDN CSSD. FLOUR: SWAP 25 PERCENT OF THE WHITE FLOUR FOR SPECIALTY FLOURS SUCH AS ALMOND OR OAT FLOUR. SINCE SPECIALTY FLOURS DO NOT ACT THE SAME IN BAKING AS WHITE FLOUR, YOU CAN'T DO A FULL 100 PERCENT SWAP, BUT EVEN JUST A LITTLE WILL PROVIDE MORE NUTRITION. BUTTER: TRY SWAPPING 25 PERCENT OF THE BUTTER IN A RECIPE WITH SOMETHING ELSE CREAMY SUCH AS PUREED WHITE BEANS, MASHED BANANA, PUMPKIN PUREE, GREEK YOGURT, MASHED AVOCADO OR NUT BUTTER. IT SHOULDN'T AFFECT THE RECIPE RESULTS AND CUTS DOWN ON FAT AND CALORIES. EGGS: NOT ALL EGGS ARE CREATED EQUAL. EGGLAND'S BEST EGGS HAVE DOUBLE THE OMEGA-3S THAN ORDINARY EGGS, AN "ESSENTIAL" FATTY ACID THAT'S IMPORTANT FOR MAINTAINING GOOD HEALTH. SINCE THE BODY CANNOT MAKE THEM ON ITS OWN, YOU MUST EAT THEM. OMEGA-3S ALSO LEAD TO A BETTER BAKING RECIPE, AS THEY IMPROVE EMULSIFYING QUALITIES. BLATNER SAYS EGGLAND'S BEST EGGS ARE THE ONLY EGGS SHE RECOMMENDS TO HER CLIENTS AND FAMILY FOR THAT ADDED NUTRITION. SUGAR: DECREASE THE SUGAR IN RECIPES BY 25 PERCENT AND ADD NOTHING IN ITS PLACE. RECIPES WILL TURN OUT JUST FINE IF YOU PULL BACK SOME OF THE SUGAR, EVEN IF YOU AREN'T SWAPPING IN SOMETHING ELSE. HALF-BATCH: YOU WANT GRANDMA'S FAMOUS COOKIES, BUT YOU DON'T NEED FOUR DOZEN TEMPTING YOU FOR WEEKS ON END. INSTEAD, MAKE A HALF BATCH BY HALVING ALL INGREDIENTS IN THE RECIPE. THEN YOU CAN ENJOY THE FOOD MEMORIES WITHOUT HAVING TOO MUCH LINGERING AROUND. CHEAKWOOLFOLK.COM

On the one hand, the holidays are all about traditions. You and your family probably have some favorite recipes you like to cook up, or maybe it's a trip to the tree farm or pumpkin patch. But just as much as holidays are about tradition, many have an insatiable drive to outdo themselves and try something new, to outdo the festivities of years past and make this holiday season the most memorable yet.

How can you outshine yourself this holiday season? The answer is simple: Think big. Don't be confined to the party supplies you have around your house; stretch out and rent equipment similar to what professional party planners use. RentalHQ can connect you to nearby rental stores and help your party stand out from the usual traditional gatherings.

Here are some other great ideas to jump-start your holiday party planning. 1. Serve your food the right way. Preparing a holiday meal is a labor of love, but even for small gatherings, it can be a real challenge to make sure that delicious food stays warm and is served at its optimal temperature. Renting chafing dishes for main courses and hors d'oeuvres can ensure that the temperature and flavor of your food stays just right and that those masterpieces you cook up taste better than ever. 2. Add some smoke, snow or bubbles. Whether you want to bring some snow to a Christmas party or some cool smoke and fog effects to ring in the new year, renting a snow or smoke machine can create a party atmosphere like none other. 3. Drink in style. To throw a truly stellar holiday party, there are some items you must have. On the top of many people's list is a full-service bar. If you don't have a built-in bar in your home or party venue, you're in luck. Why? Because you'll have more options to choose from when you decide to rent one. Whether it's an illuminated bar, modernist style or a classic stone-top design, renting a portable bar to fit your party is key. 4. Fountains of deliciousness. To really go all out, you need to think bigger. You need to plan as though you were throwing an A-list celebrity party. Renting a champagne or chocolate fountain is a sure way to do this. A perfect blend of luxury and deliciousness, a fountain will leave guests talking about that tumbling tower of liquid chocolate or bubbling champagne for years to come. 5. Focus on the details. For many holiday get-togethers, it's all about having

8 tips for navigating holiday food

temptations Written by BPT The holidays throw in a lot of temptations from every direction if dieting or watching your weight. Holiday parties and gettogethers in particular can be a healthful-eating challenge. Caught up in conversation among friends and family, surrounded by tasty food and drinks, it's easy to lose track of what and how much is being eaten. Registered Dietitian Sarah Galicki offers tips for staying the course through the holidays.

"There are a lot of calories packed into this time of year. You're doing your holiday baking, people are dropping off candy and treats, there are parties with all-you-can-eat buffets and creamy drinks like eggnog, so it's important to be prepared. It is possible to navigate the holidays without gaining weight by doing these things."

Eat first. Never go to a party hungry. If you do, chances are you'll wind up eating too much, too fast. Eat a snack before you go, such as some Greek yogurt, which is loaded with protein and calcium. Add fruit for extra taste and nutrients, and top with pistachios for crunch and good fats.

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

99

Drink wisely. If you want to indulge a little bit, have some champagne or white wine. A 4-ounce glass has approximately 100 calories. By comparison, a cup of traditional eggnog has 344 calories and 19 grams of fat (11 grams saturated fat). Skip the creamy drinks. The best bet is to avoid alcohol altogether if possible. Drink a spritzer made with sparkling water, cranberry and a lime instead. It looks festive, tastes great and has hardly any calories.

Fill up on finger foods. Small, bite-size appetizers limit the calorie impact. A good option? Pistachios. They're great to snack on; 49 have exactly 150 calories, and they satisfy that crunchy craving. Plus, they're full of nutrients and fill you up. The healthy fats will help regulate your blood-sugar level throughout the night, which is really helpful if you're drinking. Wrap some up decoratively and take along for a hostess gift to be sure there's a healthy choice on hand. And everyone loves pistachios.

Survey your options. Mindful eating is always key in any situation. Once the buffet table opens, take a visual sweep past it before jumping in line and making your selections. This way you'll avoid piling one of everything onto your plate needlessly when you eventually pass through.

Don't be first in line. The food in a buffet line looks pretty in the beginning. Once people serve themselves, it's not as appealing and you'll eat less.

Get a small plate. This trick helps limit portion size.

Avoid the white stuff. Given other options, skip the white rice, white pasta and white bread. They're loaded with calories but no nutrients. Choose items with whole grains instead. They're full of nutrients and have fiber, which will fill you up so you won't eat as much.

Delight in dessert. Dessert is probably the toughest temptation of all. But there's no reason to skip. Most of us have a sweet tooth. Satisfy that sweet craving with some fresh fruit. To make sure it's available, bring some as a hostess gift; it's always welcome.

"Overall, pace yourself," advises Galicki. "Enjoy the food and festivities."

MORNING INSPIRATION: CHOOSING A BETTER BREAKFAST

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

103

The alarm beeps as you gaze out the window at the soft sunlight welcoming the day. You roll out of bed and your stomach grumbles. You stumble to the kitchen to see how you can tame the hunger pangs, ultimately reaching for a doughnut or prepackaged breakfast bar. While this may satisfy momentarily, it won't fuel you through the morning. As your blood sugar spikes, you'll feel a short burst of energy followed by a mid-morning crash that leaves you exhausted and hungry. You need to kick the quick fix and instead choose a better breakfast. When you eat a wholesome meal to start your day, you give your body and mind the fuel it needs all morning long. Whether at home or on-the-go, eating well during the most important meal of the day is easier than many people think. Here are a few tips to keep you satisfied: Plenty of protein: Protein helps you feel full longer so you're less likely to need a midmorning pick-me-up. Plus, protein is an important building block for the body, helping support bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood. Try adding protein-packed foods to your breakfast, such as meat, beans, nut butters and eggs. Necessary nutrients: According to Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner, eggs are a classic breakfast food, but there's one easy change that can supercharge any meal. "Swapping out ordinary eggs for Eggland's Best eggs, gets you six times more vitamin D, 10 times more vitamin E, double the omega-3s and more than double the vitamin B12," says Blatner. "Plus, Eggland's Best eggs also contain 25 percent less saturated fat than ordinary eggs - that's why they are the only eggs I serve my family and recommend to my clients." Fresh produce: Adding fresh fruits and vegetables to breakfast not only gives you extra vitamins and minerals, it also helps you keep meals fresh and interesting. Add lettuce and sliced peppers to your egg sandwich. Top your oatmeal with chopped peaches or favorite seasonal fruit. Become a mix-master by blending smoothies in endless combinations to satisfy taste buds. Whole grains: Like protein, whole grains help you to feel satisfied longer, so you don't feel the need to eat until lunchtime. In general, most people need to eat about 6-8 ounces of grains daily, according to the USDA. Half of that should be whole grains. To boost your breakfast, choose whole-grain cereals, stuff a whole-grain tortilla with scrambled eggs, or top whole-grain toast with nut butters. CHEAKWOOLFOLK.COM

SAFE Â FOOD PREPARATION STRATEGIES Â TO SAVE YOUR HOLIDAYS By BPT

Think of the holiday season and answer this question: The holidays are the only time of year I do ... what? Maybe it's the only time of year you set up a Christmas tree, hang mistletoe, travel to a certain destination or stay up all night to go Black Friday shopping. For many, the holidays are also the only time of year that you prepare the traditional holiday meal. And that can lead to trouble. Each year in the U.S., one in six people will experience food poisoning. There are 48 million illnesses, 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 patient deaths that can be traced back to foodborne pathogens, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Food poisoning can affect everyone but it can cause especially serious illness in young children, the elderly, pregnant women and others with weakened immune N Osystems. MADIC | 24

Improper food preparation is one of the most common causes of food poisoning, and the risk increases during the holidays when people try to make lavish meals they would otherwise not prepare. To help keep you and your family safe this season, The Partnership for Food Safety Education - supported by Cargill, Costco Wholesale and the Frozen Food Foundation - is launching The Story of Your Dinner campaign and sharing safe preparation tips for a holiday staple: the turkey dinner. Follow the guidelines below and your holiday meal will be safe, delicious and truly one-of-a-kind. Preparing the perfect holiday turkey this season * Plan for one pound of meat per person. If a frozen turkey works best for you, allow the bird to thaw for several days in the refrigerator. Generally, you will need to plan one day for every four pounds of turkey to ensure your bird completely thaws. While your turkey is thawing, keep it on the bottom shelf in a rimmed baking pan to prevent unwanted juices from spreading. * Do not rinse your raw turkey. Rinsing the turkey is not a safety step and can increase the risk of spreading bacteria to the sink and other surfaces. * For optimum safety, cook stuffing in a casserole. Because stuffing is an excellent medium for bacterial growth, it's important to handle it safely and cook it to a safe minimum internal temperature (at least 165 F) as measured with a food thermometer. * For safety, cook your turkey to at least 165 F and always use a food thermometer to ensure your turkey reaches this safe internal temperature. You can find a complete turkey roasting chart at StoryofYourDinner.org. * When checking to see if your turkey is done, insert the food thermometer into the innermost part of the thigh and wing and the thickest part of the breast. * Put extra turkey, stuffing and other leftovers in the fridge within 2 hours. Consume, freeze or discard leftovers within 3-4 days. The annual turkey dinner is a seasonal staple. A little extra preparation can make the meal as satisfying and enjoyable as the rest of the holidays. Look Good, Feel Better! Positive self image.

There are many opinions regarding how to improve self image but ultimately confidence is the key to a positive self image. We must discover our worth and it is our individual responsibility as part of the human community to build, encourage, and uplift one another. I have found through my years of experience in the beauty industry, we do not truly transform people externally without impacting them internally.

When we share goodness and kindness while providing our services, people’s attitudes and at times, lives are transformed. Be a Blessing today by touching someone’s life with love and kindness. Sondra Wilkerson, Manicurist Big City Styles 312 W Chestnut Street Louisville, KY 40202 502-584-2489

As the nights lengthen and temperatures drop, it's a time to embrace all the simple and cozy pleasures the season has to offer: Tailgating parties, fuzzy socks, hanging strings of lights to bring ambiance to those early evenings. Of course, the season can also bring on some serious cravings for warm and comforting fare, like warm drinks, stews and chilis and spiced baked apple desserts. In fact, now is the perfect time to increase your contentment and spread the joy by preparing and sharing some homemade food. With these tips, you'll have the perfect recipe for making you and others around you glow with that particular inner warmth that only the season's simple pleasures can bring. Fire up the oven: Staying in is always the perfect excuse to create a comforting meal from scratch, especially when it fills your house with warmth and good scents. It could be a batch of almond scones, a chicken pot pie with extra rosemary or a homemade pizza with a robust basil garlic sauce. For the most delicious results, always start with high-quality, wholesome ingredients that make you feel good about what you're making. For example, high-quality seasonings and extracts, such as those from the Simply Organic line, will infuse your dishes with pure and delicious flavors. Share the joy: Whatever you're cooking, be sure and make extras, because connecting with others is especially important this time of year. Prepare a meal and invite some friends over for an evening of feasting and conversation, Or use your cooking to uplift someone who could really use a friendly gesture. Perhaps there's an elderly neighbor who can't get out much in the winter, or a friend or colleague with a touch of the blues. A shared homemade meal can be a source of comfort and bring contentment to a dark winter evening. Then, post your experiences and photos of your meal on social media with the hashtag #CookForAChange. All aglow: However you share the meal, be sure and go with warm, intimate lighting. Place lit candles around the room, hang a string of lights or do both. Either way, the soft glow will make everyone want to linger a little longer over the dinner table, savoring the warmth that comes from the cozy atmosphere, delicious food and fellowship. Take time for reflection: In the end, your effort and the happiness it creates can make you feel a deeper appreciation for life's simple pleasures. TRY THESE STRESS-BUSTING STRATEGIES TO GET THE FEAST ON THE TABLE

BPT

The date is circled in red: the day of the big feast. This year, everyone's coming over to your house for the big event. But just the thought of getting ready raises your pulse and sends a surge of stress through your system. This time, bring a new mindset to your holiday gathering. You're putting so much effort into it because you care about your family. This is, after all, a time of year when making memories matters. Which means you deserve a chance to enjoy yourself. But if the night-before preparations of cooking and cleaning keep you up past midnight, you'll show up feeling stressed and tired at your own party! This time, show up feeling just as relaxed and ready to enjoy the food as your guests. You don't have a team of servants or magic elves to help, but the next best thing is smart planning. Implement these time-saving strategies to take the stress out of the frantic final hours before the feast. Get assistance from the freezer Experienced cooks know there's no need to save up all the cooking and baking for the day of the feast. A week before the big event, set aside a day or two for a marathon cooking session, because things like sides, sauces, gravies and desserts can all be put together ahead of time and placed in the freezer. Then you can save the baking and roasting for the day of the feast. Tip: For things that will go from freezer to oven, be sure you have high-quality bakeware that won't shatter. For example, OXO Good Grips Glass Bakeware is made from borosilicate glass, which is engineered to withstand extreme temperature changes. Be your own sous-chef Cooking for a crowd means there will be lots of cutting, slicing, chopping and measuring. Before you start, do all that prepping at one time and consolidate where you can. For example, if you have three dishes that require chopped onion, do all the onion chopping at once. When you're done, just store it in a glass lidded container. The OXO Smart Seal glass containers can keep your dishes and ingredients fresh and neatly stacked in your refrigerator.

Round up your helpers A family feast begins with a good plan ... and lots of delegation. At least a few weeks beforehand, draw up a master to-do list of things you need to do to get the house ready for guests, from cleaning to decorating to setting the table. Hand out tasks to different family members so everyone plays a role. One easy way to do this is to put each family member in charge of a room to clean and prepare. For example, one can take bathroom duty, making sure it's clean, stocked and company-ready, while another takes on the family room. Hang this list in a common area, so tasks are crossed off as they're completed. Order the food This year, skip the hours of shopping at the grocery store, and try ordering everything on your list online. Whether you opt for a delivery service, or try a grocer's curbside pickup option, you'll miss out on the stress of finding parking, nudging your cart through the crowded produce section and waiting in long lines. This will save you time and stress. The night before, set the table Nothing beats waking up the morning of the big feast and seeing that your table is ready for company. The place settings are arranged just so, the wine glasses are shining and the serving dishes and utensils are laid out. All you have left is baking, warming and roasting, leaving you with plenty of time to get ready. You may even have time in the morning to relax over that extra cup of coffee!

GOOD ABOUT ENJOYING THAT SLICE OF CHERRY PIE. HERE ARE SIX REASONS WHY: CHEAKWOOLFOLK.COM

DEC 2017/ JAN 2018

* Natural, healthy sweetness: Dark sweet or Rainier cherries both offer pie lovers the perfect dose of juicy sweetness without excess sugar. Cherries boast a lower glycemic index than almost any other fruit, which means they release glucose slowly and evenly, helping you maintain a steady blood sugar level, leaving you feeling full longer and maybe even helping you maintain a healthy weight.

* Anti-inflammatory superpowers: Does your arthritis flair up when the temperature drops? Research shows that cherries contain anthocyanins, which shut down the enzymes that cause tissue inflammation in the exact same way that ibuprofen does. So, enjoying cherries daily may help reduce your need for anti-inflammatories.

* Better sleep in every bite: Keeping your energy up throughout the busy holiday season can be a challenge, but cherries can help you sleep better and feel more rested. Studies show that cherries are a natural source of melatonin, which helps control your body's internal clock and regulate your sleep patterns. Try eating cherries about an hour before bedtime to help stabilize your sleep cycle.

* Reduced chance of gout attacks: More than 8.3 million Americans suffer from gout, a painful form of arthritis commonly associated with elevated levels of uric acid in the blood. A study by researchers at the University of California at Davis found that people who ate sweet cherries showed reduced levels of uric acid, while a study by researchers at Boston University School of Medicine showed that people who ate cherries, in conjunction with their prescribed medicine, had a 35 to 75 percent lower chance of experiencing a gout attack.

* Covert cancer-fighting agents: A study by the USDA's Western Human Nutrition Research Center suggests that cherries possess cancer-fighting properties as well. Cherries contain ellagic acid, which appears to be a potent inhibitor to the growth of cancer cells.

* Boosted fiber intake: It's no secret that Americans don't eat enough fiber - in fact, many of us are fiber deficient, falling short of the 25-35 grams per day recommended by the USDA Dietary Guidelines. Eating cherries can help you reach the current dietary recommendation of two cups of fruit daily and can contribute to healthy weight maintenance, diabetes prevention and improved cardiovascular health.

While fresh cherries are available only in the summer months, frozen or preserved cherries are an excellent alternative that allow you to enjoy the health benefits of cherries year-round. Northwest Cherry Growers recommend the following easy-to-make sweet cherry pie recipe to celebrate the season:

Northwest Sweet Cherry Pie

Ingredients

2 pie crusts, prepared

2 tablespoons cornstarch

2 tablespoons cherry juice, reserved from pitting (fresh) or from rinsing/rehydrating (preserved)

7 cups (pitted) sweet cherries

3/4 - 1 cup coconut sugar

1 tablespoon almond extract or bourbon-vanilla bean infusion

Directions

1. Using a fork, whisk together the cherry water and cornstarch in a small bowl, then set aside.

2. Stem and pit the cherries, if not already done.

3. Fill pie dish with cherries and blend the remaining volume (about 2 cups or 1/4 the total volume) into a puree. Pour the remaining whole cherries into a mixing bowl and return to the refrigerator (if using frozen cherries).

4. Using a heavy-bottomed pan, gently heat the puree and sugar over low heat until the volume has reduced by 1/3 to 1/2. Constantly stir across the bottom to prevent burning.

5. Once reduced, remove from the heat and stir in the cornstarch slurry until the mix regains translucency. Gently and briefly reheat if needed. Stir in the extract and let the mixture cool to room temperature.

6. Pour the cooled mixture over the whole cherries, gently stirring to incorporate. Pour the final cherry mixture into a 9- or 10-inch prepared pie crust, and top with a second crust. Pinch, crimp and vent the top crust. Brush with a beaten egg if so desired and sprinkle lightly with coconut sugar.

7. Bake at 375 degrees for 55-60 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is steadily bubbling. Aluminum foil may be used around the crust edges to prevent browning during the second half of the bake. Transfer the pie to a cooling rack, and most importantly, allow the pie to cool completely before serving (3-4 hours).

Accessibility

You're guaranteed to feel like a Scrooge if you're stuck on a long flight or gridlocked roads. When planning a holiday trip, look for a location that's an easy drive or quick flight for everyone. Big cities might be easy to get to, but they are hectic during the holidays. Alternative destinations like Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, are just as convenient to get to and may not have as much travel congestion.

Accommodations

It will be your home away from home for the holidays, so be smart when selecting your rental to set your trip up for success. Research accommodations that keep everyone close but comfortable, such as a condotel or beach home. Both these options offer plentiful space, including kitchens, so you can whip up favorite family foods before relaxing to watch a classic holiday movie together before bed.

Unique events

One of the best parts of the holidays is access to unique events that don't happen any other time of year. Once you determine a destination, research special events in the area. For example, grab a cup of cider and walk amid the soft glow of more than 5,500 hand-lit candles at the Nights of a Thousand Candles at Brookgreen Gardens in Myrtle Beach. The breathtaking beauty is enjoyed by couples and families alike.

Fun experiences

To create a memorable trip, it's important to add a little holiday magic. Bring your favorite holiday book with you to read before bed. Decorate holiday cookies at the local bakery or pick up a gingerbread house kit at a local supermarket. Sign up to meet Santa on the beach and get the perfect holiday photo to send back to family and friends. Ask around and you're sure to find more than a few festive adventures for your travel crew.

Traditional cheer

Just because you're away from home doesn't mean you can't enjoy traditional holiday fun. Research local celebrations that feature caroling, sleigh rides and tree-lighting ceremonies. If you're in Myrtle Beach, visit Ripley's Aquarium for the Festival of Trees, which includes trees decorated to perfectly represent each of the 50 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. Find your state's tree to see how well it captures the heart of your home!

With these five tips you're sure to have your best holiday yet. Years from now you'll look back and everyone will still be able to talk in detail about their favorite travel experience.

DEC 2017/ JAN 2018

With the academic year in full swing, many schools across the country are administering vision screenings to students. Parents mistakenly breathe a sigh of relief upon hearing that their children "passed" the screening. What parents don't know are the significant limitations of school-based screenings. School vision screenings fail to detect a range of potentially harmful vision issues, the American Optometric Association (AOA) reports.

Unfortunately, nine out of 10 parents think that school-based vision screenings are all their children need to confirm good eye health. But screenings miss up to 75 percent of dangerous eye conditions in children, according to AOA's new Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline: Comprehensive Pediatric Eye and Vision Examination. What's more, when a vision screening does indicate a possible problem, only 39 percent of children receive the care they need from an eye doctor.

One of the biggest hurdles to detecting poor vision is the child's awareness of the problem. Most children with vision problems don't know that other children see better than they do; they think their poor vision is "normal."

"Healthy eyes and good vision are essential for every child's development," says AOA President Christopher Quinn, O.D. "Parents need to know that school vision screenings can miss potentially severe eye or vision problems. They cannot replace a comprehensive exam by a doctor of optometry."

The AOA, which represents more than 44,000 optometrists, optometric professionals and optometry students in communities across the country, recently issued a new, evidencebased guideline for vision care in children that informs parents and caregivers about protecting their children's eye health. The guideline, which is based on a three-year review of the latest research, concludes that children should receive a comprehensive eye exam during their first year of life and again between the ages of 3 and 5, before entering first grade and annually thereafter.

"Regular, comprehensive eye exams not only contribute to helping children succeed, they prevent and diagnose serious eye problems that can be more expensive to treat and cause permanent vision impairment if left undetected," Quinn says.

Vision and academic performance

Multiple studies have linked vision problems with poor academic performance and behavioral issues. In fact, children with undetected and untreated vision problems can exhibit some of the same symptoms as kids with attention-deficit disorders, leading to false diagnoses.

"Good vision is more complex than just being able to see clearly," Quinn says. "In order to see well enough to perform to the best of their academic abilities, children's eyes need to focus, track, work together and judge distance and depth. Typical school vision tests only screen for nearsightedness."

Eye health problems

A comprehensive eye exam by a doctor of optometry can help detect serious eye health and vision problems that in-school screenings simply aren't designed to catch. These problems include amblyopia, a condition that impairs vision in one of a child's eyes because the eye and the brain are not working together properly.

According to AOA, parents should keep these four tips in mind when it comes to their children's eye health and safety:

1. Know that pediatric eye exams with a doctor of optometry are most likely covered by your health insurance plan. Most health insurance plans, including those sold in health insurance marketplaces, cover comprehensive pediatric eye exams.

2. Look for indicators of vision and eye-health issues in your children. Common signals that your child may have a vision problem include covering one eye, holding reading materials close to the face, a short attention span and complaining of headaches or other discomfort. Remember, most children don't know they have a problem, so they are unlikely to say anything, even if they are struggling.

3. Prevent eye strain by monitoring use of digital devices. Increased exposure to electronic devices in and out of the classroom can cause digital eye strain, including burning or itchy eyes, headaches, blurred vision and exhaustion. AOA recommends following the 20-20-20 rule (taking a 20-second break every 20 minutes and looking at something 20 feet away), blinking frequently and adjusting your child's computer screen to prevent glare.

4. Make sure your kids wear proper eye protection for sports and outdoor activities. Well-fitting, protective eye wear and quality sunglasses that offer UV protection are critical to maintaining key visual skills and preventing injuries.

Holiday entertaining tips guaranteed to help hosts impress guests

Written by BPT

The holiday season is packed with social events big and small. What makes some more memorable than others? The extra thought and special touches from the host or hostess.

Cookbook author and entertaining expert Gaby Dalkin recently teamed up with the Paper & Packaging - How Life Unfolds campaign to share how you can make a big statement this season with surprisingly little effort. These five entertaining tips are guaranteed to help you create a one-of-kind party, leaving guests impressed and full of holiday spirit.

DEC 2017/ JAN 2018

Conquer holiday stress with to-do lists

To reduce stress, stay organized and ensure you maintain a merry attitude, use printed templates to create handwritten holiday party to-do lists.

"I start my to-do lists weeks before the celebration and break them down by day," Dalkin says. "A few days before the big event, I stock up on beverages. Two days before I buy all the shelf-stable ingredients. The day before, all the produce goes into the fridge, and I make any sauces or appetizers that can rest in the fridge overnight without being affected. And then, the day of the party is broken down by the hour. If you're making a roast, start it in the morning. A salad can be prepped ahead of time and dressed before serving."

Elevate gifting with personalized presentation

Nearly half of Americans feel that gift presentation enhances the gift they give or receive, according to a Paper and Packaging Board survey. That means if you want to impress, don't skimp on gift presentation.

"I grab a few rolls of brown kraft paper and make it special," Dalkin says. "If I'm sending a present to someone who loves food, I'll grab some stamps with fun food on them and stamp the paper so it's customized for that individual. If it's my younger niece, I'll stamp it with some hearts. These small gestures make a big impact."

Use a creative approach to assigned seating

Assigned seating is particularly helpful when entertaining large groups. It takes the guesswork out of sitting down to dinner and keeps the evening flowing smoothly. It's also an easy way to add festive style to the tabletop.

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

135

"If I'm entertaining for more than 10, I'll make little fold-over name tags out of cute cardstock," says Dalkin. "I'll punch a hole in the paper name tag and weave in a bit of rosemary, paper ribbon or a fresh flower to give it an extra pop."

Add pizazz with a Champagne bar

The survey also found that for approximately half of Americans, a cocktail bar stands out as a key component for an unforgettable holiday party.

Add an easy yet elegant touch to any holiday gathering by setting up a Champagne bar. Simply chill a few bottles, place on a bar cart and add bowls of fresh berries and carafes of fresh squeezed juices. Include handwritten cardstock labels near each ingredient so your guests can mix and match to their hearts' content.

This no-fuss station encourages guests to make their own cocktails at their leisure, giving the host extra time to catch up. Plus, Dalkin adds, "I've found that Champagne bars are often one of the most photographed elements of the night."

Send guests home with a little something homemade

Frozen cookie dough is one of the trendiest homemade gifts of the year. Just whip up your favorite batch of dough, tightly wrap it in parchment paper and freeze. Then add some holiday ribbons, a personalized paper label and handwritten baking instructions.

"Recipients can slice and bake at their leisure and file the recipe card for years to come," says Dalkin. "You can make the same thing for everyone, or perhaps a few different batches to suit any sweet tooth. I think of it as a gift that keeps giving." CHEAKWOOLFOLK.COM DEC 2017/ JAN 2018

IT'S NO SURPRISE THAT TEEN DRIVERS GET INTO MORE TRAFFIC COLLISIONS THAN THEIR OLDER COUNTERPARTS, BUT WHY? SOME REASONS INCLUDE LESS DRIVING EXPERIENCE, A HIGHER WILLINGNESS TO TAKE RISKS AND PASSENGER DISTRACTION. THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA) REPORTS THAT MORE THAN 350 TEEN DRIVERS GOT INTO COLLISIONS DUE TO SOME TYPE OF DISTRACTION, ACCORDING TO DATA FROM 2015. FORTY-ONE OF THOSE FATALITIES WERE BECAUSE OF OTHER OCCUPANTS IN THE VEHICLE.

FORTY-SIX STATES AND WASHINGTON, D.C., LIMIT TEENS FROM DRIVING WITH PASSENGERS OTHER THAN IMMEDIATE FAMILY MEMBERS UNTIL THEY RECEIVE FULL LICENSE PRIVILEGES. MOST OFTEN, THEY'RE RESTRICTED TO ONLY DRIVING WITH ONE PASSENGER FOR THE FIRST SIX MONTHS. HOWEVER, NHTSA TEEN FATAL ACCIDENT DATA REVEALS THAT 16-YEAR-OLDS DRIVE WITH THE

"Passengers can be a huge distraction in the car, especially for young drivers who may not have the same reaction time as more experienced drivers," said Randy Petro, Mercury Insurance's chief claims officer. "Graduated driver's licenses exist for a reason and parents need to be diligent with their teens to ensure they're adhering to these rules and not driving around with their friends before the law says they can. Even then, it's important to keep their focus on the road."

Passenger distractions aren't the only causes of teen driving accidents. Here are a few more of which you should be aware.

* Time of day: 342 accidents and 394 fatalities happen at 6 p.m., respectively.

* Day of the week: Weekends are the worst time to drive, but more accidents happen on Saturdays (1,007 accidents and 1,191 fatalities).

* Speeding: 1,505 accidents were directly related to speeding.

Mercury Insurance created the Drive Safe Challenge to provide a platform for parents and teens to have serious discussions about driving. Its goal is to reduce the number of teen crashes and fatalities, and it includes tips to help parents communicate with their kids about appropriate driving behavior, as well as useful information and videos to assist teens with being safe behind the wheel. It has recently been updated to include common causes for teen driving accidents by state. Texas teens, for example, experience the most teen driving crashes with 709, while Washington, D.C., has the fewest at 2.

Be sure to talk to your kids and set ground rules before they get in the car, because being a good driver may even qualify them for an auto insurance discount.

Five tips for staying on budget and keeping the holidays jolly Candy cane cache: Maintain your holiday budget through these 5 tips By BPT

1 (BPT) - If you're one of those savvy consumers already strategizing how to best fund gifts and other expenses this holiday season, you're not alone. Sixtyfive percent of U.S. adults who give holiday presents establish a budget for these purchases, according to a recent Coinstar survey. Yet 85 percent admit they still tend to go over budget when it comes to gift buying, entertainment, travel, decorating and other holiday expenses. Fortunately, planning ahead can reduce the risk of overspending. Consider how implementing the following ideas can help you stay on task and on budget when it comes to this year's holiday expenses. 1. Estimate all of your anticipated holiday expenses, not just gift purchases. Consider costs for decorations, food/alcohol, travel and special events to gain a realistic idea of your projected cash output. If the total is out of reach, consciously decide where to cut back so you're less likely to spend impulsively. You may have to acknowledge that you're not able to host a lavish party or buy generous presents for everyone on your list. 2. Reduce your stress by starting your shopping early and taking advantage of sales throughout the year. These strategies will help spread your costs so they don't all hit at once and reduce your overall holiday spending budget. A full one-third of U.S. adults shop throughout the year, according to Coinstar's survey, and 27 percent buy the majority of their presents on sale. Only 14 percent are last-minute shoppers. Looking for bargains and unique gift items at stores, at special events and on websites can even be fun when you're not in a panic.

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

141

3. Think of ways to boost your spending power. One method is turning to the spare change you've stashed away in a coin jar, in vehicles and around your home. It's easy to take your change to one of about 20,000 Coinstar kiosks located at grocery stores throughout the country. For many, that's found money that can be converted into cash or transformed (at no fee) into e-gift cards from popular vendors such as Amazon, Best Buy, Sephora, Lowe's and Starbucks. 4. Draw names and set gift spending limits for family gift exchanges. As families grow through marriage or children added to the brood, it's easy to allow spending and gift giving to get out of control. White elephant exchanges can be great for the kids in the family. Have them gift one of their toys or possessions to another child in the family. That will not only be softer on the wallet, but will teach them the power of gifting and reusing. 5. Consider gifts big on thoughtfulness and small in cost. Perhaps a handcrafted work of art, homemade baked goods or a meaningful service such as childcare would mean more to some recipients than a storebought knickknack, electronic gadget or sweater. Finally, don't be too hard on yourself if you go over budget despite your best efforts. You can always make up for it by cutting expenses outside the holiday season when you may face less temptation and pressure to buy. For more information on how Coinstar works, visit www.coinstar.com. 4 DIY tips to save money and get your home ready for winter By BPT

Many people look forward to the cooler weather. The brisk autumn winds and colorful leaves signal that once again it's time to take out the sweaters and scarves. There are the hot soups and pumpkin-flavored drinks to keep one warm as the weather gets cooler, but for the conscientious homeowner and dedicated DIYer, it's time to start winterizing your home. Sealing out pesky drafts around your home helps save energy while also making your home more comfortable. It also prevents water damage from rain, ice or snow and blocks out pests that might be trying to find a warm place to spend the winter. As you're deciding where to get started, here are four projects that will go a long way to save you money and make your home ready for whatever Mother Nature throws at it this winter.

CKW-THE CHEA K. WOOLFOLK MAGAZINE

147

1. Create a thermal barrier. The best way to keep your family warm and toasty while the wind, snow and sleet rage outside is to ensure your home and its building envelope - the thermal barrier between the interior of a home and the exterior environment - is properly sealed. How well the "shell" of the building (walls, roof and foundation) is sealed against the exterior environment directly impacts the amount of energy required to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Maintaining a well-sealed building envelope means you'll use less energy to heat and cool your home, saving you money. Take the time to check for and seal the following common air leaks around your home, both inside and out: * Interior windows and doors: Slowly move a lit incense stick around the edges. If the smoke drifts to the side, it indicates an air leak that needs to be sealed. * Interior baseboards and trim: Check for cracks and gaps where walls meet floors and ceilings. * Exterior windows and doors: Check for gaps and cracks where the frame meets the wall. Replace cracked or missing sealant around frames with an exterior grade sealant. * Pipes and vents: If there is a gap between the pipe or vent and the surface it goes through, it needs to be sealed. 2. Seal air leaks. Most cracks and gaps less than a half inch in width and depth can be filled with a sealant like DAP Extreme Stretch. Designed to stretch over 600 percent, Extreme Stretch can withstand the elements as your home expands and contracts, plus it is easy to apply on virtually any interior and exterior surface such as windows, trim, pipes, vents and siding. It will not crack or lose adhesion, saving you money and preventing nasty drafts. And remember, before you apply, make sure to remove any old sealant that remains to ensure the new sealant can adhere properly. 3. Move beyond window wrap. We all know that a traditional way to seal in the heat and keep out the cold is to insulate your windows with plastic film. This is an unsightly solution and leaves your home looking shrink-wrapped. A more effective and less obtrusive method is to use DAP SEAL 'N PEEL, a temporary, removable weatherstrip caulk that's great for sealing up windows for the season. It applies easily like a caulk around windows, doors, attic hatches, pipes and vents to keep out drafts. Once spring comes, it easily peels off to let in the fresh air. 4. Seal off a room. If you live in a large house and have a room or two that you don't use, consider sealing it up for the winter. Simply turn off the heating vent or radiator in the room to avoid paying to heat a room you aren't using. Then use a door draft stopper or decorative long pillow along the door floor to prevent any drafts. Whether you like the cold weather or not, the coming winter is a great opportunity to check up on your home and prepare it for winter. For the novice or the die-hard DIYer, it's an important time to assess and address your home's defenses against winter weather.

5 DIY HOME UPGRADES ANYONE CAN DO IN A DAY

BPT

Do-it-yourself home projects are sweeping the nation, and it's easy to see why. DIY is typically budgetfriendly and fulfilling to complete; simply find the right project to match your skill set and needs.

To get started, here are five inexpensive projects that can by tackled by any DIYer, each of which will have an impact on the entire home.

* Make a hardware swap. Replacing your kitchen cabinets changes the entire look of your kitchen - but it's expensive and requires considerable skill. For a simpler, smaller project that can still have a big impact, replace the hardware on your cabinets instead. Select the hardware type first - knobs for doors and pulls for drawers, for example - then move on to style. Crisp, sleek hardware goes best with a modern kitchen, while more detailed offerings work well with classic, traditional kitchens.

* Refresh your space with a fresh coat of paint. Repainting a wall or room is the perfect way to showcase your style, without breaking the bank. The Unity palette from Sherwin-WilliamsÂŽ 2018 Colormix Forecast offers unique color choices that pair together perfectly, making it easy for homeowners to create a cohesive look in their space. Try going bold with pops of peacock on an accent wall, such as Sherwin-Williams 2018 Color of the Year, Oceanside SW 6496, or you use the palette's grounded browns to put a new spin on traditional hues. It's easy to recreate a space that reflects who you are, without making expensive renovations.

* Illuminate a simple change. It doesn't always take a huge change to reinvent a room; it can be as easy as changing the light fixture. You could choose to repaint your existing chandelier, or you could give your ceiling fan a new look by replacing the blades. If you're on the crafty side, try making your own shade for an existing lamp with some of your favorite fabric.

* Invite people to your gallery. Can't decide on the one perfect image for your wall? Then why not go for several? Gallery walls are a great way to show your favorite prints and photos artistically. Pick the wall and apply a fresh coat of paint before building your gallery - after all, this wall will now be part of the exhibit. Once the wall is ready, pick your photos or prints and set them in frames you love. Now the fun part lay your works of art on an open floor space and rearrange them until you find the perfect layout. Once you've found it, grab your hammer and nails and bring your gallery wall to life.

* Bring a new vibe to your existing furniture. If a chair or love seat is starting to show its age, reupholstering it is a great way to give the piece fresh life. Remove the current fabric and replace it with new fabric of your choosing. Apply staples or stitching to hold the new fabric in place, and that old piece of furniture will have a distinctive new look.

Start by removing all soil and cleaning the boxes as you did the deck. Then, if possible, store emptied planters in a garage, shed or under the porch. If you don't have the space to store them this way, then cover them with a water-repellent tarp to protect from moisture buildup, but don't seal the tarp. As with decks, it's very important that you allow for proper ventilation.

Trim trees

Look for weak trees or those with dead branches, particularly those near your home. As snow accumulates, the weight may bring down a tree or branches, potentially damaging your house.

Eliminate this risk by removing any dead trees or dangerous branches now before the first snow. Be safe by using the proper equipment for tree trimming and removal, or, consider hiring a pro to do so. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and handling this issue now could prevent costly damage to your home down the road.

Clean the roof

Your roof is a large portion of your home, and it also holds a lot of snow over the winter. To prevent ice dams and other roof problems when freezing temperatures arrive, it's important to clean gutters and check your roof for problems now.

Start by taking all debris out of gutters to ensure free flow for water. Next, walk around your roof and inspect it for any damage. Repair loose shingles and make sure the chimney and vents look intact and secure. Your roof takes on a lot of weight from ice and snow during the winter months and you want it to be as strong as possible.

A few simple steps now can mean a cozy, safe winter for you and your entire family. Add these five steps to your winterization to-do list for this weekend and give yourself valuable peace of mind. CHEAKWOOLFOLK.COM

INCREASE KITCHEN EFFICIENCY WITH EASE BPT

DEC 2017/ JAN 2018

As the holiday season approaches and the calendar begins to populate, it's important not to allow the stress of entertaining large groups to become a burden. Below are four tips to help organize a kitchen and host with ease, creating a functional space for family and friends to enjoy.

Plan in advance

Set aside time early in the week to plan the menu, from simple appetizers to the main entree. Grocery shopping apps, like AnyList, allow the whole family to share and build lists together - which can help avoid any last-minute trips to the grocery store. Also, try to identify dishes that can be prepared in advance so more time can be spent away from the kitchen when guests arrive.

Maximize storage and counter space

Optimize counter space by designing small stations for easy access to the necessities. A coffee bar "nook" complete with Keurig cups and mugs can help kick-start a busy day. Storage near the fridge should be stocked with foil and containers, ideal for packing up leftovers after a large party. Reserve the island counter for meal prep and the cabinets below for serving ware and glassware storage.

Keep all staples in arm's reach

Cooking can be made simple by organizing the essentials. Keep similar tools together, such as bakeware and cookie sheets in one drawer, and pantry staples in another. Spices and herbs should be alphabetized and stored near the stovetop to effortlessly add flavor. For those with design in mind, opt for open shelves to showcase dishes and small kitchen accessories, such as succulents and cookbooks, while keeping everything within reach.

Simplify kitchen cleanup

Cleaning is often the most time-intensive chore in the kitchen, but if designed right, can be a breeze for home entertainers and kids alike. The Delta Foundry Kitchen Faucet complete with ShieldSpray Technology, available at the Home Depot, offers laser-like precision to contain splatter, meaning less soaking, scrubbing and shirt swapping.

4 Â reasons why a real estate franchise might be the career move for you CONTRIBUTED BY : BPT

Small business has always been the backbone of the American economy, and today's entrepreneurs are as diverse as American culture itself. Entrepreneurship takes many forms, from freelancers and independent contractors to sole proprietors. In fact, just one form of entrepreneurship - franchises - employs 8 million people and accounts for 40 percent of all retail sales, according to the Small Business Administration. Franchise operations come in many forms, from chain restaurants and retail stores to home services providers and real estate brokerages. In fact, the real estate franchise industry is a $25 billion marketplace and more than 55,000 Americans are employed as franchise owners, according to market research firm IBISWorld. "Many real estate brokers have been making great livings as small business owners for a very long time," says Adam Contos, co-CEO of RE/MAX LLC. "As franchise entrepreneurship continues to grow, we expect opportunities in real estate franchises to grow, too." Contos points to four reasons why a real estate franchise has always been, and continues to be, a great career option: 1. You can be your own boss. The ability to work for oneself attracts many people to owning a small business. A real estate franchise allows you to nurture your entrepreneurial spirit. Franchisees get to set their own objectives and make business decisions about everything from where they'll work (at home or in an office) to how they'll market their business. 2. You can work for yourself but not by yourself. Franchisors typically provide training, assistance and marketing support to franchisees. For example, billions of dollars have been spent promoting the RE/MAX brand with tools like property signs and outdoor advertising, TV, print and social media, and they are helping franchisees with professionally designed marketing materials, PR support, hands-on coaching and recruiting resources. 3. You don't have to move for work - unless you want to. Real estate agents usually specialize in an area that's close to their own home. It's easy to find opportunities in your own backyard, especially if you sign on with a franchisor that has numerous offices across the country. Living in the communities where you find business also allows you to develop a level of expertise about an area that can better serve both home buyers and sellers. 4. Your local business can have a global presence. When your franchise is connected to a well-known brand like RE/MAX, your bread-and-butter business may be local but the brand's name recognition can have global reach. By franchising with that brand, you can lean on its reputation, and that can open up opportunities beyond your local business. Charitable help provides access to life-saving care Written By: BPT

Elaine could be described as a woman with great determination and patience. She experienced kidney failure seven years ago and faced the reality of life with a chronic illness. She began receiving dialysis, a four-hour treatment three times a week, and anxiously awaited news of a kidney match. This miracle call happened earlier this year and Elaine was successfully transplanted on March 22, 2017. Elaine's journey to receive a kidney transplant gradually unfolded thanks to her determination and the support of many people. She received care from her family and loved ones, who looked after her and shuttled her to and from many dialysis visits. She underwent gastric bypass surgery and worked closely with a dietitian to help her hit the target weight necessary to be eligible for transplant. She was a fortunate recipient of a donated kidney. Lastly, for seven years Elaine received financial support from a charity to afford her insurance premiums. This financial support, known as charitable assistance, is a vital safety net that Elaine and approximately 15 percent of all dialysis patients need to maintain coverage.[1] Due to the significant amount of time required of dialysis, many people with kidney failure are unable to continue working. Many patients rely on charitable assistance to help cover insurance premiums and other health-related expenses. For patients like Elaine, charitable assistance helps ensure continuous care and allows them to choose the insurance coverage they think is best for them at this most critical time. Without it, many patients may lose their private insurance coverage and with it, a number of other benefits, including access to the specialists they need to see. Recently, a number of insurance companies have waged an attack against charitable assistance. In fact, thousands of patients have been pushed out of their health insurance plans, facing the horrible reality of having their coverage taken away when they need it most.

Access to insurance, quality care and continuity of coverage for everyone, especially those with severe health issues, must be protected. If not, one group consistently loses: patients. Patients like Elaine. For more success stories like Elaine's, there is an equal and significant need for transplant donors - living or deceased. There are 97,000 people on the kidney transplant waiting list and the average wait time for a kidney donor match is three and a half years.[2] Nineteen thousand people received a kidney transplant in 2016; however, that still leaves many more people on the list, waiting to receive the phone call that they have been successfully matched with a donor.[3] As the health care conversation continues in this country, there should be honest discussions about how patients access high-quality care, are able to visit the doctors and specialists they need, and are allowed to choose the insurance option that best meets their needs. Most importantly, patients in financial need should be able to get assistance, with appropriate guardrails, to help afford the costs. To learn more, visit DaVita.com/Transplant.
