Whether you enjoy fishing or simply throwing a line in and relaxing on the river bank, there is something to be said about the Clarence Valley and its surrounds - not only is the fishing great, it is spectacular. No matter what fishing you're into, there is plenty on offer here in the Clarence. THE WRITERS
Mick Leavey
I have grown up with fishing in my blood. School Holidays were always to great fishing places like Noosa, 1770 and Fraser Island. I was able to live and fish in Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales when I entered the workforce. If I wasn’t fishing my local trout streams near Glen Innes or chasing Murray Cod, I would be travelling to Cape York fishing for Barra, Mangrove Jack and Queenfish. I was fortunate to have some of the best Bass dams right at my front door step when I was living in the Hunter Valley.
Fishing trips to the coast were also a common occurrence, whether it be to Yamba or the Northern Territory and Arnhemland. Always spending my spare time around tackle shops I thought it might be easier to buy one, so I purchased Yamba Bait & Tackle in 2008. I started crafting lures (a skill I picked up as a child) and my lures are now fairly well known in the fishing industry and have a reputation of excellence. Mick
Paul Kneller
I first started fishing the Clarence River in 1989. I fell in love with the area and moved my family here in January 1997. At the time, my wife Cheryl and I were operating a small business known as “Deception lures!” After the sale of Deception we ran Big River Bait and Tackle in Maclean for a number of years. I have pretty much done every style of fishing you can think of. We pioneered a lot of the techniques on the Clarence, catching Mullaway on soft plastics was pretty
much unheard of before Big River Bait and Tackle was around. We developed the first Vibration Blade (Shake & Bakes) designed for the Clarence area. Steve Starling was a regular visitor, we spent countless hours perfecting our techniques on the Rocky Mouth reef in Maclean, many of those hours were captured on film for several fishing DVD’s. I wrote a fishing location round up for the Fishing Monthly group. Paul
Mark Hooklyn
I was born in Tingha NSW, where I spent my childhood catching craybobs and carp. I spent most of my holidays Bass fishing in the Clarence Valley, catching Bass, catfish and eels. As I got older I couldn’t wait for holidays to come around so I moved to the Clarence Valley when I was 16 and have been fishing at every opportunity since. I have had some highly regarded fishermen as mentors and friends with my great Uncle Norm Tibbett, who fished the
coast from Coffs to Sandon, and Allan Rooks of Maclean, who knows the lower Clarence better than most. From the snaggy log lined Orara River to the rocky gorges of the Clarence and Mann Rivers we truly live in God’s country. Four years ago I re-opened the BP Marina Service Station in Sth Grafton and established a fishing tackle store. These days we carry a wide range of bait and tackle to cater to all your fishing needs. Mark
Ted McLean
My earliest fishing memories are of catching Salmon and Mullet on cord hand lines in the Barwon river in Victoria. Fast forward a few years and it was cold rainy nights on piers and rock ledges chasing Snapper. In my early twenties I discovered land based game fishing and 40 odd years later I am still at it. Lexie and I moved to the Clarence ten years ago so I don’t pretend to be a local expert. Being new to an area does tend to make you work a bit harder on your fishing.
The best advice I can give holiday makers and traveling fisho’s is to use the knowledge you already have. If you are a Snapper fisherman just upsize the tackle a bit for Jew ,the rest doesn’t change it's still fish the tides and use the freshest bait you can get. If Bream or Flathead are the target look for structure and bait supply. Rock walls and drains running into the main river are a good starting point. Good luck. Ted
Reel Time Fishing Team 4 Catch it in the Clarence - 2021
Reel Time Fishing Charters is the longest running fishing charter business in Yamba offering keen anglers a first class experience in deep sea fishing. We go to sea as often as the weather permits, chasing quality reef fish such as Snapper, Mulloway, Mackerel, plus many other pelagics. We fish north to Evans reef, south to Sandon and east to the shelf, covering all aspects of deep sea fishing.
Our skippers have extensive knowledge and years of fishing experience maximising your chance of a good catch of quality fish during the time you spend with us. Pick ups are available from both Yamba and Iluka and we also conduct whale watching tours in season and Eco tours. Our chandlery store, Marina Boat and Tackle offers anglers plenty of choice for bait, tackle, boat bits and local fishing knowledge.

YAMBA
a beach lover's paradise Where summer holiday memories are made, If you’re looking for a relaxed lifestyle with all the trimmings then look no further than Yamba. Located at the mouth of the Clarence River, Yamba is the Clarence Valley’s principal coastal resort. The traditional custodians of the coastal areas around Yamba and Maclean are the Yaegl people.
Image: Graham Dowsett
Yamba’s eleven pristine beaches are great for snorkelling, swimming and surfing. Whiting beach, a river beach, is located south of the breakwall and is an ideal spot for children. Main beach, which is patrolled during the summer months has an ocean pool built into the rocks which is great for swimming laps. The broad waters of the Clarence are ideal for boating, fishing and exploring.
Image: Fran Dowsett
With its relaxed lifestyle, award winning restaurants and cafés, boutique shops and art galleries there is so much to see and do in Yamba. Just 5km south of Yamba is the charming seaside village of Angourie. Located at the northern tip of Yuraygir National Park it has one of the most spectacular coastal walks in the state. In the 1960s, Angourie became famous as one of the best pointbreaks in Australia and is often visited by the world’s best surfers. Wooloweyah a small village located just north of Angourie is situated on the banks of Lake Wooloweyah, a shallow lake which is a great spot for fishing and canoeing. Image: Lynne Mowbray

Yamba Breakwall
Mick’s Tips Be prepared and get here early as there are few good fishing platforms. Make sure your keys and phone are securely zippered in a safe dry spot.
For the Kids Not the safest place for kids. Ten years and older with adult supervision would be fine as the rocks can be slippery when wet with deep crevises.
What is it?
What bait should I use?
1.2km rock-wall which protrudes 1km into the ocean. It is the mouth of the Clarence River. Great spot for walking as well as fishing.
Mullet strips, prawns.
What lures are best? Metal lures, soft plastics, hard bodies lures or poppers.
Where is it?
Best time to fish?
Can be accessed from Clarence Street, near the main street.
What’s there?
This is a good all year round spot. River can be snaggy when the tide is running fast.
Good parking areas, toilets, showers, picnic tables, BBQ areas and shelters.
What dream fish might I catch?
What fish should I target?
Large Bream, Jewfish or Flathead. Tuna and Mackerel can be caught off the beach side of the wall in summer.
This area produces the most variety of fish as you have both access to the river and the ocean. Tailor, Bream, Whiting, Flathead, Jewfish, Tuna, Mackerel, or even Snapper.

Oyster Channel Bridge
What is it?
What bait should I use?
Medium sized bridge over the river, creating good feeding around the pylons for small bait fish. Good access available from the banks.
Any strip baits, mullet or herring would be the best. Prawns and yabbies also work well.
Mick’s Tips Take plenty of insect repellent as the mozzies are terrible.
What lures are best?
Where is it?
Larger plastics for Jewfish. Deep diving smaller lures for Bream.
On the outskirts of town. It bridges Micalo Island and Yamba.
Please take your rubbish home.
Best time to fish?
What’s there?
At any time you can get a mixture of winter and summer fish.
Car parks at both ends. No toilets, but great shade on hot days or in inclement weather.
For the Kids
What dream fish might I catch?
Older kids can handle the rocky foreshore, although it can be very snaggy.
Flathead, Jewfish or Mangrove Jack.
What fish should I target? Bream, Flathead, Jewfish. Even though it is rocky Whiting can be a common catch. Trevally and Mangrove Jacks are an occasional fish.
Safety First: - Fishing from the Bridge is prohibited. It is a very busy, narrow bridge being the only way in and out of Yamba.

Gantry Wall
What is it?
What bait should I use?
A smaller rock wall that houses the trawler fleet and the end of the marina.
Really anything can work. Best time to be there is when the trawlers are in wash-down and all the scraps are washed into the water.
Where is it?
Mick’s Tips
What lures are best?
From Yamba Road, turn off into the marina and head along the wall.
Poppers for Trevally, plastics for Bream and large deep diving lures for Mangrove Jacks.
What’s there? No facilities, however there is some nice grassy areas and shady trees which are great for picnics.
For the Kids
Best time to fish?
What fish should I target?
Good all year round. Early morning and evening.
Blackfish, Bream, Trevally and some big Mangrove Jacks.
What dream fish might I catch?
Tide Predictions - Bureau of Meteorology
Great spot for kids, although a little rocky on the wall. The kids can feed the Bream with bread or watch the lizards on the bank.
Mangrove Jacks would be the most sought after fish. They fight well and are hard to land.

What is it?
What bait should I use?
Long 1.5km beach which has nice gutters for fishing. The beach changes with the weather. Some gutters have rocks underneath.
Pilchard, prawns, yabbies, pippies, worms.
Where is it?
What lures are best? Best lures are metal lures or soft plastics. Always a good idea to call in and talk to your local tackle shop owner before you start.
At the very end of the main street, turn left or right into carparks. Situated between Yamba Point and Flatrock.
Best time to fish?
What’s there?
The cooler months fish better as the gutters can be deeper.
Picnic areas, toilets. Popular swimming and surfing beach. Also dog friendly off-leash on the southern side of the vehicle access.
What dream fish might I catch? Large Jewfish.
What fish should I target? Flathead, Bream, Jewfish, Whiting, Australian Salmon, Flathead.
Mick’s Tips Great for family fishing, dog friendly and has good vehicle access onto the beach.
For the Kids Great beach for kids, they can swim, fish or dig in the sand.
Safety First: - spot a rip current: Rip currents will occur in deeper water, so it’s usually a darker colour compared to the white breaking waves over a sandbank. Because the water is deeper, there will be fewer breaking waves which can give the appearance of a safer spot to swim.

Collis' Wall
What is it?
What’s there?
What lures are best?
A wall of rocks on the northern side of the river.
Being a boat based fishing location there is nothing there apart from the wall. The closest boat ramp is Iluka.
Go for vibration blades and soft plastics. Drifting along the wall flicking hard bodied lures is a popular pastime with boaties.
Where is it? The wall is located at the south eastern end of Goodwood Island and can be fished from either the river side which has a depth of around 12m or the more sheltered area behind the wall.
What fish should I target?
Best time to fish?
Flathead, Whiting, Bream, Blackfish and Jewfish.
This is a great spot all year round and is best fished at the slack of the tide.
What bait should I use?
What dream fish might I catch?
The best bait to use is live mullet or tailor or squid strips.

Lake Wooloweyah
What is it?
What bait should I use?
Lake Wooloweyah is a huge shallow lake system. It does have several rocky points.
Best baits include worms, yabbies, white pilchards and prawns.
Mick’s Tips If using a boat be mindful that it can be very shallow at times. Great for kayaks and canoes.
What lures are best?
Where is it?
With the lake being very shallow it would be best to use smaller shallow running lures, plastics or blades.
By car, head towards Angourie and then turn off to Wooloweyah. If you are traveling by boat, head up Oyster Channel until you hit the lake.
Best time to fish?
For the Kids
Summer months from spring to autumn.
What’s there?
What dream fish might I catch?
There is a small boat ramp and grassy foreshore.
You may catch a 5kg Flathead or larger Jewfish. Some Whiting can also get quite large in the lake.
What fish should I target?
Easily accessible from the grassy foreshore for kids and it is also sheltered from most winds.
Safety First :- Keep a proper lookout at all times for things like floating debris, hazards like submerged crab traps, trees or rocks and other boats especially kayaks and canoes.
Whiting, Bream, Flathead, smaller Jewfish. In the summer months it is a great spot for Blue Swimmer Crabs. Tide Predictions - Bureau of Meteorology http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/tides/

Black Rock
GPS: 29.15.250 153.26.140
What is it?
What bait should I use?
An area of reef north of Woody Head and south of Evans Head that has a reputation of producing good reef fish.
Baits to use include Blue Pilchard and Mullet fillet fished on a Paternoster rig. Try floating baits for Snapper in the winter months.
Where is it?
What lures are best?
Approx. 6 nautical miles north, northeast of Woody Head.
Between the months of June and September, soft plastics in large grub type work well fished just off the bottom.
What’s there? There are some areas of hard rock pinnacles, broken rock and gravel. The depth varies from 25mtrs to 45mtrs. Fish show on this reef easily as the Trag and bait shoals elevate above the reef.
Best time to fish? All year round.
Reel Time Team Tips Seek up-to-date local knowledge of where you are going.
For the Kids All-round family spot, obviously boat needed.
What dream fish might I catch? You can catch Snapper to over 10kg here as well as Jewfish to over 20kg.
What fish should I target?
Safety First: - Be Prepared: Check the weather forecast before you go.
It's best to target Snaper, Trag, and Blue Spotted Flathead. Tide Predictions - Bureau of Meteorology http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/tides/

For the Kids
Fishing in 50mtrs of water might be a bit like hard work for younger kids especially if the big fish are on.
North East Corner
What is it?
What lures are best?
North of Angourie is the north east corner of the reef.
The water is around 50mtrs deep so lures are limited here, a large soft plastic on a heavy jig head if the current isn’t too hard will produce fish.
Where is it?
Almost due east of Angourie Point, approximately 4½ nautical miles off shore.
Best time to fish? All year round spot with fish taken most days. Being on the edge of the reef it seems to be a drop-in spot for traveling fish.
What’s there? It is a complex reef structure of hard rock, sponge and wire weed.
What fish should I target?
What dream fish might I catch?
There are numeroud quality reef fish found here including good Snapper, Trag, Jewfish and Nanagi.
This spot will change every time you fish here and you never know what you will catch. Winter can bring some very large Snapper (over 8kg).
What bait should I use? Strip bait of mullet or tuna on paternoster rigs, or in winter floating baits of blue pillies.

Catch it in the Clarence - 2021 31
Woody Head What is it? It's the start of Shark Bay. Rocky headland with shallow reef running to the north.
Where is it? From the mouth of the Clarence approximately 5 nautical miles north.
What’s there? There is beach access from the road at the headland as well as the road north of the turn off. On land there is a camping ground and boat ramp.
What fish should I target? Mackerel fishing is great from December to early May along the outer edge of the shallow reef and inside the bay there are a couple of higher reef areas the Mackerel congregate around. Some very nice Tailor can be taken from the headland itself in winter mostly but all year round it will produce Tailor, Jew and Bream. From July to early September soft plastic fishing the outer edge of the reef produces nice Snapper, just drift along in about the 10– 5mtr mark.
What bait should I use? Fish for Tailor off the rocks using Pillies on gang hooks. Floating blue pillies on light wires will get the Mackerel later in the morning. Stay Safe: - When offshore boating, plan your trip – check the weather and make sure all safety gear is on board and working.
What lures are best? Fishing for Jewfish a large bibbed lure like Bills Bugs Jew Lure will get down to the fish. Off the rocks a silver metal lure of about 50g worked fast for the Tailor or Trolling pink squid well back from the boat at between 8–9 knots seems to work the best for the Mackerel between day break and about 8am then switch to float baits. Soft plastics work well for snapper here.
Reel Time Team Tips
Best time to fish?
Make sure your boat and motor are in top condition. Don’t go out if you have any engine trouble at all. Always make sure you have enough fuel to get out and back.
June to September for the Tailor,July and August for the snapper. December to early May for the Mackerel.
For the Kids
What dream fish might I catch? Spanish Mackerel to over 20kg in the bay and Jewfish over 15gk from the rocks and Tailor over 4kg have been caught here.

Freeburn Rock (The Bombie)
GPS: 29.31.133 153.22.155
What is it? A rock structure protruding up from the bottom of the ocean usually with extremely steep sides is known as a bombie or pinnacle. Freeburn Rock lifts out of around 15mtrs of depth to just 3.5mtrs below the surface. A large swell will break regularly on this rock. Because of the close proximity to the surface there is a large amount of coral and kelp on and around the rock.
Where is it? Approximately six nautical miles south of the mouth of the Clarence and about 1-½ nautical miles off shore.
What’s there? The bombie itself is enough, some keen divers and spear fishers dive the rock. The structure attracts a vast array of different fish, pelagic and reef and large shoals of bait.
What fish should I target? If you love fishing for Snapper then this is one of the best grounds for targeting Snapper on plastics or lures. Also trolling around the rock can be very productive for Mackerel, Tuna, and Cobia etc. Blue Groper is also a common catch in the winter.
What lures are best? Large soft plastics in any pattern will take Snapper in the very early hours of the morning. Most days you can troll surface lures (pink squid) or divers (large bibbed lures) around the rock and be successful.
Best time to fish? The rock will surprise you everyday. Warm water during December to April is good for pelagics on troll. Late June to September for Snapper on plastics,
What dream fish might I catch?
What bait should I use? Floating pillies will produce some nice Snapper and Jewfish at times but the most productive fishing around the rock is lure fishing. Red crabs are like lollies to the Blue Groper. A live yakka or slimy mackerel trolled at walking pace will be the best for a big Spanish Mackerel.
Spanish Mackerel to over 30kg from this rock have been caught.
For the Kids Definitely not for the kids. The break is very unpredictable.

Reel Time Team Tips
Always boat at a safe speed and know the limits of yourself and your boat.
Caution Freeburn Rock is one of the most unpredictable breaks on the coast. Even on the calmest of days a freak wave can break over the top and swamp a boat. This spot deserves the greatest of respect and care.

Reel Time Team Tips Use your marine radio to log on and to log off with Marine Rescue. Let them know where you are going, estimated time of return, vessel details and how many people on board. Don’t forget to let them know when you return.
For the Kids The ease of fishing the shallower areas of this reef makes it great for kids to learn to deep-sea fish.
What is it?
What bait should I use?
Red Cliff is an area of reef south towards Brooms Head. The name Red Cliff comes from the fact that if you look to shore there is a large red cliff.
The fish here will eat everything from bait prawns to livies. It is hard to find bait that won’t work here so anchor up, burley and start enjoying life.
What lures are best?
Where is it?
If you put the time in you may catch fish on plastic’s and small jigs easily, although bait is definitely the way to go.
South of the mouth of the Clarence approximately 10 nautical miles. It is a large area from about 3 miles to 6 miles off shore.
Best time to fish?
What’s there?
Anytime is a good time.
Red Cliff is a mixture of hard rock, broken reef and gravel patches. The depth varies from 20 – 50mtrs.
What dream fish might I catch? Large Pearl Perch and Venus Tusk fish are always trophy fish and this is the place that can happen.
What fish should I target? All of the best reef fish can be caught from this reef complex. Snapper, Pearl Perch, Venus Tusk fish, Moses Perch, Trag, Pigfish, Jewfish etc. etc.

BROOMS HEAD timeless beauty Perfect for a family holiday 'The Broom', as it is affectionately referred to by locals, is a great beachside holiday destination. Originally known as Cakora Point, it is a leisurely 22km drive from Maclean. The Brooms Head road winds its way firstly through the outer residential areas of Townsend and Gulmarrad before making its way through cleared farmland and eventually along the borders of Yuraygir National Park.
Brooms Head Bowling & Recreation Club
Along the way, you can usually see large numbers of kangaroos and wallabies and if you are lucky enough, one of the last remaining flocks of ‘coastal emus’. To the right, just before reaching Brooms Head is the turnoff to Sandon River. Drivers will have to negotiate several kilometres of dirt road. Located within Yuraygir National Park, Sandon River is a beautiful spot to swim, fish or picnic. There is no store or food available for purchase, but there are toilets, camping and drinking water.
Friday Raffles Barefoot Bowls
Lake Cakora can be found on the northern edge of the settlement and the shallow lake is ideal for canoeing and is a great spot for swimming.
incl the Brian Commorford Deck
It has a well protected ocean lagoon, ideal for the kids to swim, as well as an unpatrolled surf beach.

Harwood
What is it?
What fish should I target?
Harwood is a small hamlet located on Harwood Island between the north and south arm of the Clarence River. Fishing options include the Harwood Bridge, river flats on the southern side downstream and upstream from the Harwood Hotel and good deep water near the sugar mill, slipway and the hole at Martins Point.
Flathead, Mullaway, Bream, Luderick, Whiting can all be caught, as well as some becoming more frequent summer visitors like Giant Herring, Tarpon and Trevally.
What bait should I use?
Where is it?
What’s there?
What dream fish might I catch? Again large Mullaway are the target, however some 4kg+ Flathead are often caught here. Harwood bridge can often turn up some obscure captures, like Cobia and large Mangrove Jack.
What lures are best?
Boat ramps on either side of the river. which have cleaning tables and toilets, and plenty of parking for cars and trailers.
Flathead are responsive to soft plastics nearly all year round, peak times are April/May and
Tide Predictions - Bureau of Meteorology http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/tides/
Best time to fish? The winter months are best for the big Mullaway and Bream, autumn and late winter early spring for the Flathead, summer months for the Whiting.
Live herring for Mullaway, small lano mullet also make excellent live bait, as do torpedo squid. For Bream small pieces of cut bait work well. For Flathead it is pretty hard to go past white bait or anchovies.
Harwood Island is where the Pacific Highway goes over the Clarence river (Harwood Bridge).
August/September. Mullaway find large soft plastics and Vibration Blades hard to resist. Lightly weighted soft plastics, small deep diving hard body lures and small blades work well for Bream.

Rocky Mouth
What is it?
What bait should I use?
Best time to fish?
Where the South Arm of the Clarence converges with the main river lays a large body of coffee rock reef known to the locals as Rocky Mouth.
All the usual baits will work fine at Rocky Mouth, rigged live herring for big Bream and Mullaway, live poddy mullet for large Flathead. Try prawns, chicken gut, mullet gut, squid and worms.
No matter what the season there is always something going on at Rocky Mouth, best for Bream in autumn and winter, big Flathead, Trevally and Mangrove Jack in the summer time. For the big Mullaway you can’t beat spring. The last of the run in tide through slack water, or the bottom of the tide through slack water are both optimum times.
Where is it?
What lures are best?
Rocky Mouth is within 500m of Maclean CBD.
Hard body diving lures for bream in the winter fished over the shallow reef can yield great results as can small lightly weighted soft plastics. Some very big Flathead and Mullaway call Rocky Mouth home for several months of the year. Big soft plastics and Vibration Blades are very effective on both. Plenty of Mangrove Jack and Trevally etc will fall victim to the same techniques over the summer period here.
What’s there? The boat ramp near the Court House in Maclean is only around 300m down stream from Rocky Mouth.
What fish should I target? The most common would be Flathead, Mullaway, Luderick, Whiting and Bream.
Tide Predictions - Bureau of Meteorology http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/tides/
What dream fish might I catch? Summer months, Mullaway over 10kg are occasionally caught here as well as giant Trevally over 5kgs have been taken. Some dry summers, massive schools of giant herring take up residence at Rocky Mouth to feast on prawns and small bait-fish.

MACLEAN the Scottish town Enjoy friendly, country hospitality On the banks of the mighty Clarence River is Maclean – the Scottish town in Australia. This historic town is renowned for its Scottish Festivals the Highland Gathering and International Tartan Day. Many of Maclean’s street signs are written in Gaelic as well as English. Take a stroll and explore the historic architecture on the heritage walking trail or track down your clan on the 200 decorated tartan power poles. A visit to the bicentennial museum shows the development of Maclean with the adjacent Stone Cottage depicting home life in the 1880’s. There is a scottish cairn located in Taloumbi Street. The decision to create a Scottish Cairn in Maclean grew from a Bicentennial gift of a Cairn from Scotland to Australia (1988). Despite intense lobbying from many towns with Scottish links, the Cairn was given permanent home in Mosman Park, Sydney. The Maclean “Scottish Town in Australia” Committee decided to construct its own Cairn under the supervision of Scottish stonemason George Kerridge of Canberra. The Cairn was positioned in Stanford Park. Stones were obtained from parts of Scotland, from Scottish families throughout Australia and locally. The Maclean Scottish Cairn is a fitting memorial to the contribution Scottish settlers made to the Clarence and to Australia. Maclean has a bustling retail sector with many boutique shops housed in some beautifully restored historic buildings. Source: Clarence Valley Council

The Broadwater
What is it?
What’s there?
What lures are best?
Known locally as the “Broad” it is a vast shallow lake connected to the Clarence river above Maclean, it (along with Lake Wooloweyah) is one of the most important aquatic nurseries on the Clarence.
There are no amenities in the Broadwater, Maclean is your nearest port of call.
Small lightly weighted soft plastics for the Bream in the shallows, larger ones for the Mullaway that patrol the drop offs where the Clarence and the Broad merge. This also a perfect place to fish Vibration Blades.
Where is it? The Broadwater is a couple of kms upstream from Maclean. You can launch your boat at Maclean or drive to the ramp on the Lawrence Rd that is just opposite the Broadwater (all wheel drive access), there are no real land based opportunities to fish in the Broadwater.
What fish should I target? The main species you will encounter in and around the Broadwater are Bream, Flathead, Mullaway and Luderick. Occasional summer visitors include Trevally, Giant Herring, Tarpon and the odd Mangrove Jack.
Best time to fish?
What bait should I use? By far the number one bait for people targeting flathead up at the Broadwater would have to be white bait, other baits such as local Clarence River prawns, squid, mullet gut and live herring all have their place here as well.
Tide Predictions - Bureau of Meteorology
Best time is autumn and winter. About 10 days after the full moon there will be a run out tide around day break, the prawns that have “gone to mud” will lift on these smaller tides and the fish will be waiting.
What dream fish might I catch? Large Mullaway are often taken in the area just outside the Broadwater.

The Barges
Hot Tip A good drift can be had along the bank. The depth drops to 8m close to where the Submarine Pipeline sign is located on the bank.
What is it?
What bait should I use?
Old cane barges have been skuttled on the most north easterly bank of Harwood Island creating a haven for bait fish.
The best bait to use is squid strips. Prawns are ok although bait fish will keep you occupied re-baiting hooks.
What lures are best?
Where Where is is it? it?
Drift along the bank with soft plastics or flick small hard bodied lures into the structure created by the barges.
Along the bank of Harwood Island between the eastern mouth of Serpentine Channel and the main part of the river.
For the Kids
What’s there?
Great fun for kids as the small bait fish will keep them occupied. You will need patience having to re-bait their hooks all the time.
As you will need to access the spot by boat, there are no facilities. The area ranges from 2m in depth to 8m.
Best time to fish? Winter is great for Bream and summer is better for Flathead although you will catch both all year round. Fish on the slack water as the tide can run quite fast through here.
What fish should I target?
What dream fish might I catch?
The main fish would be Bream and Flathead, although you may be lucky enough to pick up a School Jew.
Tide Predictions - Bureau of Meteorology http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/tides/
Good sized Bream are a definite possibility along with large Flathead.

ILUKA
seaside village charm Discover nature's paradise Situated on the northern side of the mouth of the Clarence River, Iluka is as far removed from “sister” town Yamba as you could possibly get. Less than one third the size of Yamba, Iluka is favoured by visitors and locals alike for its laid back, casual lifestyle, fewer people and less traffic. Access to Iluka is from the Pacific Highway 10km north of the Harwood Bridge. A couple of kilometres from the highway is Woombah and a drive around the streets of this pretty riverside village is worthwhile. Goodwood Island is also accessed from Woombah at the coffee plantation. There are some fabulous picnic spots along the banks of the Clarence River or you can throw a line in. Goodwood Wharf (Port of Yamba) is the home of ocean going freighters serving the needs of residents of Lord Howe Island and the South Pacific.

Goodwood Island Wharf
Safety First: If boating, make sure you keep a close eye out for crab traps. Particularly between September and April.
For the Kids The tidal flow here is very strong and the rocks can be slippery. The sandy beach tucked back in next to the wall would be much better for the kids.
What is it?
What bait should I use?
This is the Port of Yamba loading wharf. The wharf itself is off limits to the public but the two rock walls outside the chain wire fence can be fished.
Pippies, nippers and beach worms. Best baits to target Jewfish and Flathead are Beach Worms and live Herring which can be caught on a bait jig at the wharf. Black or green weed for Blackfish.
Driving from Iluka 11 km turn left at the Woombah coffee shop into Wharf St and follow the road to the wharf.
What lures are best?
Where is it?
For Jew fish and Flathead try mid size paddle tail soft plastics and for bream try smaller wriggler or prawn imitations.
What’s there? Small sandy beach and boat ramp.
Best time to fish?
What fish should I target?
Pretty much all year round at this spot. Target Blackfish from February to June and Flathead, Bream and Whiting in the Summer months.
There are some big fish lurking about under this wharf but fishing close to oyster encrusted pylons mean most of them get to stay there. The ones you can get out will include Bream, Flathead, Blackfish, Whiting and school Jew.

What fish should I target?
10 km stretch of beach running from Woody Head to Black Rock. The beach has plenty of fishable gutters and is protected from southerly winds. The beach entrance can get very soft after long periods without rain so it may pay to check before driving in.
In summer target Whiting, Bream, Tarwhine and Flathead. In early Autumn School and Black tip sharks move into the southern end of the bay. In Winter fish for Tailor, Bream and Jewfish.
What bait should I use? Pippies and Beach Worms can be gathered on the beach (check regulations and bag limits). Best baits for Jew are Beach Worms Mullet strips and live baits. Tailor fillets for Sharks.
Where is it?
It is 6km north of Iluka on Iluka Road.
What’s there?
What lures are best?
The car park before the 4wd access has toilets and a picnic area with gas bbq. There are no facilities at the 4wd access.
Best time to fish?
For Tailor 40/65 gram chrome raiders and for Flathead try 40/1000mm soft plastics. Almost anytime is a good time.
Safety First: - Rip currents will usually occur in deeper water, so it's usually a darker colour compared to the white breaking waves over a sandbank, giving a rip the appearance of a saver spot to swim. Tide Predictions - Bureau of Meteorology
What dream fish might I catch? Large Jewfish are always a possibility.

The river can be negotiated upstream by canoe for at least 20km and the lower estuary is idea for tinnies or larger boats. At Minnie Water there are excellent walking tracks and camping, secluded beaches and abundant wildlife.
