Countdown to dreams of ordinary men

VALLEY GIG GUIDE

After two tours of Australia to celebrate the music institution that is Countdown, Dragon is taking the concept back out on the road again for a third series, this time celebrating ’80s UK chartbusters. Dragon played more than 50 Countdown-inspired shows over the two previous tours. This year, the group brings its show to the Yamba Bowling Club on Saturday December 29 and they’ll be putting their spin on songs from some of their favourite and most respected bands, like Queen, The Police, The Clash and Duran Duran. Of course, their two-hour set will also include some of Dragon’s hits such as April Sun in Cuba, Rain, Young Years, Still in Love, Dreams of Ordinary Men and Are You Old Enough. Geoff Helisma chatted with the group’s bassist, Todd Hunter.

GH: Since Dragon’s primary commercial success in Australia, from 1976 to 79, a lot of musicians have cycled through the group. As the only remaining member of that line-up, what’s your comment about the relevance of Dragon now? TH: That was mostly in the ’70s and ’80s. This line-up is the most long-lived. We’ve done just under a thousand shows so far. GH: Is there anything else you would like to say to punters regarding being an elder rock and roll statesman who didn’t die before he got old? TH: I think people these days are more musically literate. They don’t slavishly follow bands. They’re more loyal to songs; they don’t care where they come from. GH: How do you maintain the group’s energy; as the band’s driving force, how do you keep going and making new music? TH: For me, Dragon’s more of a life thing, rather than just a band. I’m not sure, but it’s just incredibly great fun to play. We’re happy if we play every weekend of the year, which is basically what we are doing. When bookings come in for these tours, we just say to the agents, ‘Say yes to everything.’ GH: Why do you have such a high

regard for Countdown? TH: Well, the reason I’m talking to you now is because of Countdown. It made us a viable band in the ’70s, and again in the ’80s when they took us back, letting us play songs that sometimes weren’t even singles until Rain came along and things went nuts again. GH: Your promotional material says that it YCU KORQTVCPV VJCV [QW nĆ‚PF VJG JGCTV QH VJG song and bring something to it of our own, so as not to be a cover’. Tell me about how that works. TH: The songs that we ended up with, they CNN nĆ‚Vo GCEJ QVJGT 9G FQ UQOG OCUJ WRU NKMG Heroes, Under Pressure and Let’s Dance – and that works really well. It’s not some slavish tribute to the songs; it’s what the hell we like and it’s us. GH: Terry Chambers, the drummer from English group XTC, was your drummer in 1983 and 84 when you reformed; how did that happen? TH: That was just a thing where I was talking to somebody about how great the drum part in Making Plans for Nigel is. He said, ‘the drummer’s living in Newcastle [NSW].’ I just rang him up, and he was practically in the band the next day. GH: What is it that propels performing artists like you to continue playing and being creative for more than 40 years? TH: Well, the question is: ‘Why do we do VJKU KP VJG Ć‚TUV RNCEG!o 9JGP + YCU UKZ QT UGXGP my uncle was playing with this rock band for one night in Auckland. I had to borrow a white shirt [to go] and what they were playing was incredible: great songs. The crowd was going nuts and I thought, ‘Okay I’ll do this’, and I did it. That’s how simple it was.

Tex Perkins has been a key player in Australian music for decades, although the ambit of genres he has traversed is wide and open. His career has taken in everything from the groundbreaking experimental punk-tonica of Sydney mid-80s noise-niks, Thug, to the lilting, dark country of his recent material with the Dark Horses. From the hard edged sounds of the Beasts Of Bourbon’s snarling pub rock to the evocative soundscapes of The Cruel Sea, whose 1991 single, This Is Not The Way Home positioned Perkins’ world-weary growl within a new musical context – and exposed him to a wider audience. Then there was Tex, Don & Charlie, which saw Perkins join forces with Don Walker, Cold Chisel’s pianist and master

songwriter, and Charlie Owen, previously Australia’s best kept musical secret. And there’s the TnT project, where he and You Am I’s front man, Tim Rogers, celebrated their long-term friendship with a record and a US and European tour. Notwithstanding all of the CDQXG 2GTMKPU JCU TGEQTFGF ƂXG solo albums with the Dark Horses and, more recently, has been travelling the country with the hit theatre production, The Man In Black, playing the leading role, Johnny Cash. Whatever Perkins brings to Bowlo Sports & Leisure’s auditorium on Friday January 11, it’s sure to be engaging, entertaining and, perhaps, a little bit dangerous. Fleckney’s critique contemplates Jimeoin’s style, perhaps hinting that it should be an anachronism by now. “...observational comedy isn’t exactly the Ć‚TUV VJKPI [QW CUUQEKCVG YKVJ VJG GFI[ 'FKPDWTIJ Fringe,â€? he writes, however, Fleckney cannot resist Jimeoin’s undeniable charm. “[Jimeoin] has nothing to prove by now, 52 years old and with a solid fanbase across the world, you’re not going to get any surprises. And with Result!, he delivers an hour of pretty masterful stuff.â€? Catch Jimeoin in the auditorium at Bowlo Sports & Leisure on Sunday January 13. Clarence Coast There is a multitude of surf breaks located along the Clarence Coast, from Woody Head in the north to Pebbly Beach in the south. Many are tucked away in bays and behind headlands within the Bundjalung and Yuraygir national parks, which form the majority of the 80 kilometre (as the ETQY ĆƒKGU EQCUV 5Q GZRNQTCVKQP combined with some speculation, planning and research can reveal some little known and surfed gems.

The Brooms Head back beach can throw up an occasional quality beach break, as can the area surrounding Sandon River camping area – but a good deal of speculation and effort is required to reach and complete a successful surf mission on the south side of the river – a short paddle and hike could be well rewarded. The stretch of coast from Sandon River to Minnie Water has scattered beach breaks, as do several bays in the Minnie

On the northern side of the Clarence River, explore the bays and beaches south of Woody Head, all the way to the river’s northern wall at Iluka – there is vehicular access to nearby national park picnic and tourist areas. The stretch of coast from the wall at Turners Beach, Yamba, to the iconic Angourie Point area features some consistent beach breaks and a dangerous ‘mysto’ slab at the tip of Yamba Point. #PIQWTKG 5WTĆ‚PI 4GUGTXG YJKEJ YCU FGENCTGF 059oU Ć‚TUV %TQYP UWTĆ‚PI TGUGTXG QP ,CPuary 12, 2007, takes in an area from Angourie Back Beach to Green Point. On this small stretch of coast, depending on conditions, there are 11 surf breaks; however, some need the right swell, wind and/ or sand to cooperate. Angourie Point is the northern end of Yuraygir National Park and, if you’re up for some hiking along the Yuraygir Coastal Walk to the Red Cliff camping area, located several kilometres north of Brooms Head, you could luck into some waves to remember – the experience is enhanced by the isolation (make sure you have a friend with you). Vehicular access to the Red Cliff camping area is from Brooms Head Road.

Summer magic with Vast |HEIDI BRETT

Autumn, winter, summer or spring, the beginning of a new season is always a welcome change. Without fail there is always something to look forward to, a moment or an atmosphere that belongs in one season alone. For me the beginning of Summer is a time I long for after hibernating through the cooler months. I love the long days, getting out and exploring and entertaining at home all of which make it my favorite time of year. Here are my easy tips to help you get the best out of summer this year, so you can get the most of your time with friends and family. Whether it’s creating that romantic picnic or freshening up your home ready for entertaining with friends and family we have you covered at Vast.

SUMMER PICNIC

Picture a romantic picnic set up in the dappled shade under a tree ……. To create your perfect picnic pick one of our stunning Wandering Folk picnic rugs and one of our new range of old school wicker picnic baskets bursting with food and wine and your ready to go and explore.

CLASSIC CHARM The sun is out and it’s a busy time of year but maybe your looking to create a space that evokes a stolen moment in which to sit and watch the world go by. Rather than a traditional single lounge, group a selection of chairs together to get lost in a book, for an intimate conversation or to simply enjoy your favourite view.

SUMMER DRINKS BAR Nothing says summer like a refreshing G&T topped with freshly sliced cucumber. (my new favourite summer drink) Create a bit of WOW factor the next time you invite friends over with one of our classic drinks trolley within your home. A well stocked drinks cart will ooze fun and luxury when entertaining this summer.

Equipped with the above tips it’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy your summer.

A ‘wee’ bit of Scotland Named in 1862, “Maclean had earlier been called “Rocky Mouth. The NSW Surveyor - General Alistair McLean instructed local surveyor W. A. B. Greaves of Grafton to design the town. Greaves named the town “Maclean and the name “Rocky Mouth fell from use. Scottish Settlers who came to the Maclean area were mainly Highlanders driven from their land during the Highland Clearances. Responding to offers of immigration to Australia, several shiploads arrived on free or assisted passages. The Free Selection Act of 1861 meant that many migrants became landholders without needing large capital backing. The average farm on the Lower Clarence at that time was 60 acres (approximately 25ha). A number of descendants of the early Scottish Settlers still live in the local area.

GEOFF HELISMA

It was Monday morning on October 25, 1993. My classmates and I were halfway through learning the intricacies of how to navigate and use various softwares on Windows PCs. Our tutor, Graeme Bowes, was not his usual self when he arrived a little late for our class. In fact he was devastated. His son, Adam, was born the previous Friday, October 22. “He was born without tibia bones, his legs had to be amputated above the knee,â€? he said, or words to that effect. Still, Graeme taught the class. His stoicism both mystified and commanded respect. Seventeen years later, on Friday December 3, 2010, Adam Bowes, then a Year 11 student at Maclean High School, was the guest speaker at an International Day of People with Disability function – its theme, Don’t DIS our ability – at the Raymond Laurie Sports Centre in Yamba. His speech was insightful and inspirational. And an indication of what lay ahead when it came to making career choices. “As I look around and see so many people, it reminds me that it is not only people with a disability but their families, friends and local community who are a part of this day. However, I also feel that every day of the year we should acknowledge the importance of people with a disability because we all, in our own way, make a contribution. “This can be, on the one hand, making peoRNG OQTG CYCTG QH VJG FKHĆ‚EWNVKGU HCEKPI RGQRNG with disabilities, such as physical access – on the other, developing a change of attitude so that there is acceptance and, indeed, celebration of people with a disability.â€? *G FGĆ‚PGF JKU CEJKGXGOGPVU YKVJKP VJTGG maxims that he said his family followed. “One, you can achieve whatever you put your mind to and are only limited by restrictions you place upon yourself; Two, you should give back to

They, by their love, support and encouragement, ensure we achieve our goals.â€? That same year, his outstanding citizenry was rewarded when he was named the 2010 Clarence Valley Council Young Citizen of the Year. Meanwhile, Adam had spent many hours training in the swimming pool and competing at the weekly Yamba Swimming Club meetings, where the sense of community and the friendships he made probably informed some of his 2010 speech. In 2009 he competed at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Melbourne, where he says he “did alright; I won one or two gold medals, which was awesome. I got seven Aussie records through my entire time swimming, age records and all that.â€? Even though “a lot of people expected [Adam] to go on to the 2012 Paralympicsâ€?, he had already decided that was not the life path he wanted to choose. Adam’s career as a singer and actor, while still at the budding stage, began while still at high school, with roles in the school’s musicals, the Clarence Valley Theatrical Society and his own video productions, which he published on YouTube. Since those humble beginnings, he has completed a diploma in screen acting and a bachelor of music (musical theatre). Adam has had minor roles in Winchester, which stars Helen Mirren and Jason Clark, and in the Mel Gibson-directed Hacksaw Ridge. He was a choir singer in Delta Goodrem’s music video

for her song, Enough, and there have been several television appearances, too, including a satirical piece on the now defunct ABC TV show, Tonightly with Tom Ballard, titled ‘NDIS Fails: Adam Bowes’. To cut a longish story short, Adam’s NDIS (National Disability Assistance Scheme) application was rejected on the grounds ‘that there’s just not enough evidence that you have a disability’. It was very hard growing up, but made easier by growing up in this little town [Yamba]; made easier with the incredible support network I had and Mum coming into kindergarten (they took me into the library to play a computer game or something) and explaining [my disability] to the rest of the class. Everyone was pretty much cool: ‘Yep, that’s Adam’, and I think I gained a sense of humour about it as I grew up and a way to not take it too seriously. I always have this vivid memory of being at Melaleuca Drive when I was in primary school and I can’t

remember why, but I was really frustrated with my legs and I think I kicked my swing set out of frustration. How did your parents deal with your disability? There was a big thing, though; if I had my legs on and not in the chair, kids would like to have a ride around in my wheelchair – teachers would be, like, [said in a lowered, near whispered voice] ‘You can’t do that, you can’t do that.’ In my head it was just me sharing, so, ‘It’s okay, yeah, you can have a go.’ It feels like a long time ago now. But you PGGFGF VYQ NGCTPKPI UWRRQTV QHƂEGTU VQ QRGTate it and the other students couldn’t go up the stairs while it was in use. Students used to help me get up to Level 3 of the science block. When was it that you thought that an acting and or singing career was what you wanted? It started with singing in early primary school, then on stage, then community musicals. I just loved the community musicals. Just before 2004, they did Wizard of Oz at Maclean High.

’

Matt Fisher [a teacher at the school who produces the musicals, among other activities] asked Mum if he could borrow my legs to put under the house to use as the witch’s legs. I was still at Yamba Public and we went there as a group. So I’m in the audience watching my prosthetic legs on stage. I always wanted to join them up there. I loved the way I felt as an audience member, seeing those actors and those characters as they came into the audience. I always loved making people happy; and I wanted to do that by being on stage. AIM was a bit tricky because there were more things I couldn’t do at AIM in dance and technique classes. I loved AIM while I was there but, I think in terms of movement and dance, I would have been better off in private coaching sessions, because if you are in a large group it’s not fair to focus on one person more than the rest.

Are there other things from high school that led you to where you are now, disability or not? I think there were a lot of opportunities at high school: with drama we were given the opportunity to go to Brisbane and see some Shakespearian and other plays, which were incredible to see with these professional actors. With music, we got to go down to Sydney and see the encore performances, which were the best HSC students from the past year. And we got to see musicals at the Capital and Lyric theatres; we saw Guys and Dolls and got to go back stage. Tell me about your time studying at Screenwise. Denise Roberts, the owner/principal, was upfront about my disability and said, ‘You’ll have to work that bit harder to be seen not just for disability, but for acting ability – which was great, and she was incredible. I was there for two years, 2012/13, and I was living in a very small apartment in Broadway, but it was big enough for me. I told a couple of people that and they said, ‘No way, you’re kidding!’ What was the reaction from the able-bodied students? [Sigh], it was never... well... before... when I’m in a group setting, I say, ‘By the way I’m a double amputee, I’ve got prosthetic legs.’ Just so it’s out of the way; I’ll usually have a bit of a joke or sense of humour about it, to make them feel comfortable so they don’t have to ask. I went in, had a chat and they took a couple of photos with my legs and all that and I got an email saying they wanted me to come in for one day. It was incredible being on the set.

They ended up getting me for three days. The second day I didn’t do anything. They got me in make-up and I was sitting up on the set for a few hours. There’s a lot of waiting around. Then they came up to me at midnight and said, ‘Adam would you mind coming back on Monday? He asked me, ‘Where are you from?’ ‘Yamba,’ and he said, ‘I know Yamba,’ and we had a good chat about Yamba. They will say, ‘Disabled people can’t be on a set that long because they get too tired,’ or something like that. Well, okay, some people might, but some people don’t. ARIES

March 21-April 20 LOVE & LUST Relationships will be ‘steady as she goes’ in 2019. Which could be an issue for adrenaline addicted Rams! If you are attached, do all you can to reboot a stale partnership or fix a frustrating problem. If you allow boredom and complacency to set in, then it won’t be long before you’re heading out the door. Singles - with Venus vamping through your sign (from April 21 until May 15) you’ll be at your bewitching best as you attract admirers like moths to a flame. So, it’s the perfect time to fall in love, join an online dating site or update your current profile. LOOT & LUCK Travel and luck are linked in 2019, when you could benefit from a foreign friendship or an international business connection. January and February are particularly good months to tap into your entrepreneurial side and turn an abstract, innovative idea into a productive and lucrative project. But avoid gambling, real estate speculation and joint financial ventures in July and November, when retrograde Mercury scrambles your logic and confuses your business brain. LIFESTYLE January and February are the months to take some calculated risks and set a fabulously unique course for the year. But your professional life is in for some serious and transformative changes as you take on more responsibilities in your current position, accept a leadership role, start a new job or change careers. With Jupiter jumping through your adventure zone, travel beckons – especially in January, February or March. FAMOUS ARIES Lady Gaga, Elton John, Reese Witherspoon. NEW YEAR MOTTO “Don’t let anyone in the world tell you that you can’t be exactly who you are. You have to shine in your own way.” (Lady Gaga)

Prepare for banking, real estate and stock market volatility in 2019, which could even result in another Global Financial Crisis. So find practical ways to protect your assets and gain more financial freedom and independence. Can you sell property or shares to pay off debt and boost cash flow? Or earn extra money turning something you love into an entrepreneurial venture? There will continue to be reality checks for corporations, businesses, banks and politicians. People who have taken short cuts (or been dishonest) in these areas will be caught out and face serious repercussions. We will see more respect

TAURUS

April 21 - May 21 LOVE & LUST Attached Bulls - love and lust are on the menu in 2019, when (courtesy of extravagant Jupiter) your sex drive regularly soars. January, February and December are terrific months to travel with your partner, preferably to an exotic foreign destination that’s near water. Singles – don’t sit around waiting for true love to knock on your door. February, May and June are fabulous months to flirt up a storm and circulate in style (both in person and online) when proactive Mars and charismatic Venus visit your sign. LOOT & LUCK Lucky Jupiter is moving through your ‘money-from-others’ zone (until December 2, 2019) so you could benefit from a favour, freebie, pay rise, inheritance, gift, bumper tax return, divorce settlement or superannuation payout. Make sure you manage any windfall wisely, with a view to longterm financial security. Then, from December 3 onwards, there’s money to be made via publishing, education, travel, business trips, international contacts, imports or exports. LIFESTYLE 2019 is the year when you can really stand out from the crowd and make a strong impression in the public sphere. With unique Uranus moving back into your sign (from March 6 until 2026) the more authentically you express your personality, talents and creativity, the more successful you’ll be. Saturn, Pluto and four eclipses are activating your education zones. So it’s important that you channel serious and focused energy into updating your skills or studying new subjects in the coming year. The more you challenge yourself mentally, the better. FAMOUS TAUREANS Cher, George Clooney, Cate Blanchett. NEW YEAR MOTTO “All of us invent ourselves. I’ve always taken risks and I’ve never worried about what the world might think of me.” (Cher)

for the wisdom of our elders, as well as the long overdue restructuring of nursing homes, aged care facilities and endof-life options. Expect substantial growth in areas involving education, sport and travel. Like advances in online learning and digital publishing, more supersonic planes and high-speed trains, plus a boom in horse-racing and adventure tourism. 2019 also bodes well for boosted funds for sporting organisations and space exploration, as well as more countries around the world legalising euthanasia. Read your personal forecast for your zodiac sign below…

GEMINI

May 22 - June 21 LOVE & LUST Courtesy of bountiful Jupiter, 2019 is a very positive year for relationships. Attached Twins - you have much to learn from your spouse and the more you explore new horizons together, the better the partnership will be. Singles – you could discover your perfect match when travelling; be attracted to someone from another country or culture; find true love with a teacher; or a long-term platonic friendship could take a surprisingly romantic detour! LOOT & LUCK When it comes to receiving funds from others, 2019 will be a frustrating year. If someone owes you money, don’t expect it back in a hurry. And – if you find yourself in financial difficulties – then don’t presume that family or friends will bail you out! In the current economic climate, the more cautious and thriftier you are, the better your fiscal future will be. January is the best month to commit yourself to a rebooted budget. If you are serious about making progress, you’ll start to see pleasing results by July. LIFESTYLE Love, friendship, luck, travel and business are all linked. So, 2019 is a fortunate year to start (and promote) a promising joint venture, especially with a business partner from another country or culture. But avoid making important career decisions in February, July and November, when Mercury (your ruling planet) reverses though your money and work zones. Instead, take the time to research, revise, rethink and recalibrate. FAMOUS GEMINIS Stevie Nicks, Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie. NEW YEAR MOTTO “The man of my dreams could walk round the corner tomorrow. I’m older and wiser and I think I’d make a great girlfriend. I live in the realm of romantic possibility.” (Stevie Nicks)

CANCER

June 22 - July 23 LOVE & LUST Expect some challenges in 2019 as Saturn, Pluto and three eclipses stir up your relationship zone. Singles – you may have to date a few duds before you find your dream lover. Don’t give up – each dating disappointment will lead you closer to your soul mate. Attached Crabs – February is the prime month to plan a romantic weekend escape with your sweetheart, when Venus boosts your sensuality and lust for life. But things could come to a head in July, when the Lunar Eclipse shines an unforgiving light on a frustrating problem. LOOT & LUCK The Lunar Eclipse fires up your money zone in January. So be careful you don’t get carried away on holiday (or at the New Year Sales) and end up with a financial fiasco on your hands. In 2019, good fortune manifests via your connection with a friend, colleague, employee or tenant. You’ll also find that prudent spending, solid work habits and a healthy lifestyle will lead to more lucky opportunities coming your way in the future. LIFESTYLE Existing one-to-one relationships (whether romantic, platonic or business) have a karmic quality to them over the coming year. You could meet someone for the first time (or go somewhere new) where you experience a distinct feeling of Deja-vu. The Saturn-Neptune connection stimulates your kind, caring and humanitarian side in January, June and November. You’ll feel like travelling in April and December but expect some turbulence along the way. FAMOUS CANCERIANS Princess Diana, Harrison Ford, Margot Robbie. NEW YEAR MOTTO “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” (Princess Diana) December 2018

LEO

July 24 - Aug 23 LOVE & LUST In 2019 you’ll experience a lucky love cycle, as Jupiter (planet of prosperity) powers through your romance and good fortune zone. So, it’s a wonderful year to join an online dating site, fall in love, move in together, propose, get married or renew your wedding vows. You could also go on a special holiday with your partner or start a hot romance with a sexy foreigner, as love and travel are connected. The best months to take a trip are January, February, April and May. LOOT & LUCK Many Leos will be extra lucky in 2019, as prosperity planet Jupiter moves through your good fortune zone! So, it’s an auspicious year to sell shares or real estate, enter a competition, buy a lottery ticket, visit the casino, win at the races or launch a lucrative project. But avoid making important financial decisions (like applying for a loan or signing a contract) when Mercury is retrograde in February, July and November. LIFESTYLE It’s a fabulous year to foster friendships, as you extend your peer group to include a generous and philanthropic new crowd. Your family life is also incredibly important in 2019. Some Lions will welcome a new baby or enjoy improved relations with a child, teenager or parent as you share mutual hobbies, sports and interests. You’ll also feel more benevolent towards a recalcitrant relative and may find it in your heart to forgive and forget their past transgressions. FAMOUS ARIES Meghan Markle, Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Hemsworth. NEW YEAR MOTTO “We need to be kinder to ourselves. If we treated ourselves the way we treated our best friend, imagine how much better off we would be?” (Meghan Markle)

LIBRA

Aug 24 - Sep 23 LOVE & LUST Neptune and Saturn stimulate your love zones in 2019, so you could celebrate your engagement, get married, move in with your lover or become a parent, as you strive for more permanence in your primary partnership. With hard work and commitment, your love life will slowly go from strength to strength. Singles – expect a temporary dating drought in February, when Mercury reverses through your relationship zone. The best months to meet your soul mate are in May, June, August and September, when your earthy charm attracts admirers from near and far. LOOT & LUCK With prosperity planet Jupiter visiting your domestic zone, family and luck are linked. So, the period between now and December 2 is the best time to redecorate, renovate, build an extension, sell property, buy a new home or other real estate, house-sit, relocate or start a home-based business. Good fortune could also come via a loved one, distant relative or family friend. Your luckiest days of the year are May 3 and August 21 so plan something special. LIFESTYLE With four eclipses stimulating your peer group zones, is 2019 the year to sever ties with a fair-weather friend? Make it a priority to fill your friendship group with positive people who encourage your talents and support your dreams. The following dates are when Mercury (your ruling planet) is retrograde … from February 5-28 be extra careful when communicating with loved ones; July 7-August 1 looks tricky for friendships and social networking; from October 31-November 20 expect computer, travel or car chaos. FAMOUS ARIES Beyonce, Prince Harry, Amy Poehler. NEW YEAR MOTTO “Your self-worth is determined by you. You don’t have to depend on someone telling you who you are.” (Beyonce)

Sep 24 - Oct 23 LOVE & LUST Attached Libra – January and June are terrific times to travel with your sweetheart. Whereas April and May are the best months to bring more romance, flirting, fantasy and fun into the relationship. If you’re single, make sure you’re actively on the lookout for love in January and February, when adventurous Uranus and proactive Mars power through your partnership zone. And don’t be shy about promoting your positive qualities. If you don’t love and respect yourself, then why should anyone else? LOOT & LUCK Prosperity planet Jupiter moves through your communication and social networking zone until December 2, 2019. So, you could hit the internet jackpot when something you post (or sell) online goes viral. There’ll also be opportunities to boost cash flow via writing, teaching, podcasting or public speaking. But your financial situation could stall (or temporarily go backwards) in November, when Mercury reverses through your money zone. With plenty of patience and persistence, things will soon be back on track again. LIFESTYLE Expect some hiccups during the coming year as Saturn, Pluto and three eclipses stimulate your home zone. Any dramas will be easier to manage if you are flexible, take your domestic responsibilities seriously and make your family Number One. With Jupiter activating your travel zone, an interstate sojourn or an overseas adventure are on the cards so start planning your itinerary (and saving) ASAP. Best places to visit? Cultural cities with fabulous food and fashion (like New York, Paris, Barcelona, Melbourne and Milan). FAMOUS ARIES Serena Williams, Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts. NEW YEAR MOTTO “Family’s first and that’s what matters most. Tennis is just a game; family is forever.” (Serena Williams)

SCORPIO

Oct 24 - Nov 22 LOVE & LUST Singles – are you stuck in a rut, brooding about the past or searching for love in all the same old places? With Uranus and Neptune activating your relationship zones, be more creative and adventurous as you look for a lover who shakes up your comfort zone (someone with an avant-garde approach to life). Attached Scorpios – 2019 is the year to get the balance right between the stability of your day-to-day routine and the excitement of your shared dreams and fantasies for the future. LOOT & LUCK Finances and luck are linked in 2019, as Jupiter (planet of prosperity and good fortune) transits through your money zone. So expect a boost to your bank balance via a pay rise, bonus, gift or extra business coming your way. It’s also an auspicious year to buy a lottery ticket, enter a competition, bet on the horses or hit the casino. Any windfall won’t last long if you don’t manage it wisely though. So, make sure you squirrel extra cash away to tide you over when times are tight. LIFESTYLE Jupiter is journeying through your self-esteem zone. So, it’s time to truly love yourself and expand your personal parameters so you can become the biggest and best version of yourself that you can possibly be! And don’t dismiss the assistance of others. Influential people are happy to help you. With an experienced teacher, coach or mentor on board, you can achieve great things. If you travel in 2019, it’s likely to be for work or study purposes, rather than just frivolous fun. FAMOUS ARIES Katy Perry, Ryan Gosling, Julia Roberts. May and June favour companionship, romance and pampering your partner, so plan something special. LOOT & LUCK With Pluto, penny-pinching Saturn and four eclipses stirring up your money zones in 2019, expect delayed payments, tax problems, diminished cash flow or budget blow-outs. July looks particularly problematic, when retrograde Mercury and two eclipses bring financial issues to a head. Separating your wants from your needs is a must, as smart Sagittarians get thrifty and concentrate on sensible saving, sustainable living and getting by on less. LIFESTYLE Lucky Jupiter (your power planet) is moving through your sign until December 2, which is good news for your general health, physical vitality and mental wellbeing. Jupiter also gives you the chutzpah to initiate personal changes and then take on the world. Make the most of this powerful energy surge, which only happens every 12 years. It’s time to be the best and boldest Sagittarian you can be, as you take on ambitious challenges and venture into exciting new areas that would usually daunt you. Confidence is definitely the rocket fuel that will take you places in 2019! FAMOUS ARIES Taylor Swift, Brad Pitt, Jane Fonda. NEW YEAR MOTTO “Happiness and confidence are the prettiest things you can wear.” (Taylor Swift)

CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan 20

LOVE & LUST Attached Caps - the Solar and Lunar Eclipses (in January and July) could stir up hidden tensions, particularly if one of you has been putting work before the relationship. It’s best to bring these problems up into the light of day, where they can be examined, discussed and resolved. Singles - Cupid’s arrow is most likely to strike in February, May or June, when you’re attracted to a tender Taurus or a caring Cancer. So, brush up on your flirting technique and sexy one-liners. LOOT & LUCK Intuition and luck are linked, as your inner voice guides you in the right direction. But be very careful about money matters in January and July when the Lunar Eclipse and retrograde Mercury scramble your financial antennae. The luckiest month of 2019 is December, when prosperity planet Jupiter activates your personal and good fortune zones. So, make sure you prepare well during the preceding 11 months so you’re ready, willing and able to capitalise on good luck when it comes along. LIFESTYLE Saturn (which is still transiting through Capricorn) presents some serious challenges in 2019. If you learn from them, then you’ll gradually develop and mature … like a fine red wine. Activities like meditation, contemplation, yoga and journaling are favoured, as Jupiter journeys through your spiritual zone and you tap into the wisdom within. The positive Saturn/Neptune connections (in January, June and November) are fabulous for taking a special dream and spinning it into a rock-solid reality. FAMOUS ARIES Dolly Parton, Bradley Cooper, Julia Louis-Dreyfus. NEW YEAR MOTTO “The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you’ve got to put up with the rain.” (Dolly Parton)

Jan 21 - Feb 19

Feb 20 - March 20

LOVE & LUST The Lunar Eclipse (on January 21) heralds a dramatic year for love. Attached Aquarians – February is a fabulous time to travel with your partner. But your romantic life looks rocky in July, when Mercury reverses through your relationship zone and communication goes haywire. So, it’s not an ideal time to make important decisions about matters of the heart. Singles – are you looking for your soul mate in all the wrong places? In April and May, true love could be as close as the boy or girl next door. LOOT & LUCK The internet and luck are linked in 2019 and your public profile could suddenly take off via the clever use of social media (and a helping hand from Jupiter). A tweet, blog post, video or podcast could reach a wider audience or even go viral. Astute Aquarians will find numerous ways to monetise lucky opportunities that come along. But avoid being impulsive and buying big ticket items (like a car, home or investment property) in February, when Mercury reverses through your money zone. LIFESTYLE With Saturn, Pluto and three eclipses highlighting your humanitarian zone, many Aquarians will become involved in volunteer work as you reach out to help the old, sick, homeless or disadvantaged within your local community. You’ll feel extra restless in 2019, as Jupiter and Uranus stir up your gypsy gene and you’re keen to explore local landmarks, travel internationally or move interstate. But you may discover that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side! FAMOUS ARIES Oprah Winfrey, Bob Marley, Ellen DeGeneres. NEW YEAR MOTTO “Do your best to make a difference. Not only in your own life but also in other people’s lives.” (Oprah Winfrey)

LOVE & LUST Love, travel and adventure are linked in January and February. From March onwards you’ll feel like refreshing your dating profile, road-testing a potential partner, taking a fledgling fling to a serious new level or rebooting a long-term relationship that’s got into a rut. But matters of the heart are likely to stall in July, when Mercury reverses through your romance zone. So it’s not a good month to celebrate an engagement, get married or launch a new liaison. Instead, be patient and wait. LOOT & LUCK With fortunate Jupiter activating your career zone, an exciting new professional venture is shining on the horizon. So, it’s a wonderful year to look for a job, hit your boss for a raise, apply for a business loan, expand your present vocation, buy out a struggling competitor or live the laptop lifestyle by starting an online business. If extra money comes your way, don’t be too impulsive and short-sighted! Make sure you secure any windfall wisely, with an eye to your long-term future needs. LIFESTYLE In January, June and November, the Saturn/Neptune connection helps you be more productive with your creativity and spiritually. So, it’s the perfect time to take up a daily discipline (like meditation or yoga) plus turn an abstract idea into a concrete reality (like a book, poem, painting or some other tangible creative project). But extra caution and discrimination are required in February and September. Don’t be gullible and let a dubious friend, colleague, client or customer lead you down the primrose path to Piscean trouble! FAMOUS ARIES Drew Barrymore, Steve Jobs, Eva Longoria. NEW YEAR MOTTO “Life is very interesting. In the end, some of your greatest pains become your greatest strengths.” (Drew Barrymore)

Step into the light

Gone are the days when spectacle wearers had to change glasses in order to see comfortably in different light conditions. Sensity photochromic lenses were developed to react consistently to light, UV and temperature. They darken quickly when the wearer steps outdoors and fade back just as quickly to full clarity indoors. During these rapid transitions, total UV protection is maintained. Photochromic lenses are designed to adapt to their surroundings, so the eyes don’t have to. Two new Sensity products include Sensity Dark and Sensity Shine. Sensity Dark lenses deliver great darkness outdoors and behind the car windows, offering the performance wearers require in their outdoor activities. They are perfect for wearers who spend a lot of time outdoors, drive during the day or have light sensitive eyes. Sensity Shine lenses provide wearers with an exclusive look thanks to a mirror coating that is more intense in the light yet subtle when indoors. Sensity Shine lenses also deliver extra darkness outside. They are perfect for wearers who spend a lot of time outdoors, are light sensitive and are interested in trends and fashion. All Sensity lenses provide 100% protection against UV rays. Call into your local Eyecare Plus store and talk to your optometrist about Sensity lenses.

Don’t let mosquitoes ruin your holidays NSW Health is reminding people to protect themselves against mosquitoes when spending time outdoors. Dr Cameron Webb, Medical Entomologist at NSW Health Pathology, said the warmer weather is a time for increasing mosquito activity and it is important to prepare against the diseases carried by them such as Ross River and Barmah Forest virus. “The incidence of Ross River and Barmah Forest virus infections increases over hotter months, especially with people spending more time outside, Dr Webb said. “People should still take precautions against mosquito and insect bites.

There is currently no vaccine for either disease so preventing them means avoiding the bites of mosquitoes that spread them. People are being urged to take the following steps to avoid mosquito bites. • Avoid being outside unprotected, particularly during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. • When outside cover up as much as possible with NKIJV EQNQWTGF NQQUG ƂVting clothing and covered footwear. • Apply mosquito repellent regularly to exposed areas (as directed on the con-

tainer). Repellents containing Diethyl Toluamide (DEET) or Picaridin are best. • Do not use repellents on the skin of children under the age of three months. Instead, use physical barriers such as netting on prams, cots and play areas for babies. • Screen all windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out. • When camping, use Ćƒ[UETGGPU QT UNGGR WPFGT mosquito nets. • Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by getting rid of items that hold water or by emptying the containers.

Implant Supported Dentures Full lower dentures traditionally have been held in place by gravity and patient determination. Some lower dentures have fantastic retention and the wearer is able to eat almost anything. These people should consider themselves very lucky. Most full lower denture wearers survive on a modified diet and mild embarrassment. There is a way, in most cases, to significantly increase the retention of the full lower denture. In a majority of cases, two implants placed in the anterior (front) part of the lower jaw can stabilise the denture incredibly. There are many systems available to achieve this anchoring. Most rely on a ball and socket type joint. The locator system is slightly different and provides more retention. Presently, locators are the gold standard in implant supported dentures. Supporting an existing denture on two implants can provide some of the highest levels of patient satisfaction modern dentistry can offer. Imagine being able to eat an apple for the first time in 30 years or not having to worry that your dentures will move around whilst eating out. Placing implants needs careful consideration of a range of factors including bony architecture, position of nerves and blood vessels, medical history and previous dental history. Here at Fitzroy St Dental most implants can be placed in the surgery. As well as convenience, this can provide considerable financial savings. We are more than happy to answer any of your implant or dental related queries. As the festive season approaches, the team at Fitzroy St Dental would like to wish the Clarence Valley a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. If you do happen to find yourself with a dental dilemma over the Christmas period, we are open for emergencies on all working days and offer an after hours emergency service. Please contact us on 66425211 or after hours on 0418400735.

Thanks to Invisalign’s revolutionary 3D modelling software and manufacturing technology it is now possible to have straight teeth without visible brackets and wires. From these 3D computerised images a series of custom-made clear plates (aligners) are manufactured. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks, gradually moving the teeth towards the final aligned position over a period of 9 to 18 months. The advantages of Invisalign treatment far outweigh the disadvantages. It is reliable, effective, practically invisible and comfortable to wear. It doesn’t require a change in lifestyle and because the aligners can be removed you can floss and brush normally and eat whatever you want, there is no forbidden food. However if you are tempted to wear the aligners less than 20 hours a day treatment may take longer or the optimal alignment may not be achieved. Initially Invisalign was seen as more appropriate for adults but recent modifications have led to the introduction of InvisalignTeenTM, which straightens teenagers teeth with the same custom made clear aligners modified for young adults whose permanent teeth are still growing and forming. Each set of aligners comes with a colour indicator, which fades when it is time to change the aligner and shows parents that their teenager is keeping up with treatment. There are also four free replacement aligners because teenagers have a habit of losing, misplacing or damaging them. This makes it easier for teenagers to complete treatment on time and without adding increased costs.

Tips to avoid driving tired If you feel tired when driving: • Pull over for a break in a safe place. Rest areas provide a safe place for riders and drivers to stop, revive and survive. • Pull over for a nap (20 minutes works best) • Swap drivers if you can • Stop for a coffee if you’re on a short drive, although the effects of caffeine won't help for long and won't work for everyone. Caffeine is not suitable for some people and can be harmful. Limits on the daily consumption of caffeine are recommended. • Even if you don’t feel tired, take regular breaks to avoid becoming tired. • Remember that sleep is the only way to overcome tiredness. © State of New South Wales (Transport for NSW)

Before you drive: • Get a good night’s sleep • Avoid driving at night when your body will naturally want to sleep • Arrange to share the driving • Avoid long drives after work • Plan to take regular breaks from driving (use rest areas) • Catch a cab or public transport instead • Ask someone for a lift • Find out if any medicine you are taking may affect your driving • Know what the early warning signs of fatigue are

“It is equally important for shoppers to have easy access to businesses, and that means having parking spaces available. “We are aware that in some places timed parking spaces are being taken all day. We might be a little lenient on that through the rest of the year, but coming into the busy Christmas and holiday period we will be more active. “It would be ideal if people were considerate of the needs of others, and in most cases they are, but we will act if we have to.”
