a final dream
Frank’s final dream was to visit the Battleship Missouri Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where he witnessed Japan’s surrender – and the end of World War II – on September 2, 1945.
A Message From The Founder
Gifts from the Heart
Perhaps it was a worried expression on my face that prompted our Communications Director, Erinn Lynch, to insist I take a ride on a rope swing at a recent event. My knee-jerk thought was “I can’t...I shouldn’t,” but I soon found myself soaring over the hillside, my worries dissipating with each undulation of the rope. Imagine my surprise when a few weeks later I saw she wrapped my corner of the newsletter with that image. What is she telling me?
“In earning Charity Navigator’s four star
After 16 years with Dream Foundation, I’ll admit that some degree of worry is inherent to the job. I worry over being able to aptly serve all of the precious hopes and wishes that come our way. I worry over adequately relaying the many touching dream stories we receive with the people, like you, who make dreams come true. Since opening our doors in 1994, I’ve never stopped worrying over how funds will appear to care for families in need.

most fiscally responsible way possible.”
As a foundation, we have the tremendous privilege of watching our dreamers lose their worries in wonderful moments of relief, comfort and happiness. It’s inspiring to see how these families – with real and legitimate concerns – still find it in their will to seek joy in our service. They haven’t lost hope. They haven’t let go of their dreams. This summer, we saw our 10,000th dream fulfilled. When I reflect on this amazing milestone, I see a montage of photos, expressions of rejoice, and letters that have brought many happy tears over the years. 10,000 dreams is a big number, yet in celebration of this achievement never do we lose sight of the significance of one dream. As you’ll see in this newsletter, each dream carries a powerful impact and joy to the family it serves and to those who give. Thank you for taking away the worries of our dreamers, and therefore, the worries of our foundation with your continued support and compassion. In the spirit of our dreamers, this holiday season let us all agree to embrace joy. Cherish the time spent with family and loved-ones; eat, laugh, and play without reservation; find value in the simple things...ride on a swing if it presents itself to you.

Soul Food: Eat, Dream, Love
In August, Dream Foundation received a request from Malisa to meet Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the inspiring book, “Eat, Pray, Love.” Dream Foundation Dream Coordinator, Lisbet Frey, put the dream in motion. Elizabeth was a gracious and willing participant, driving to Malisa’s apartment to spend time with the family.
In her own word’s, Malisa shares the impact of a dream: As I considered my Dream Foundation dream, I kept thinking back to the book I had read in 2007, “Eat Pray Love,” by Elizabeth Gilbert. I have been working on improving my spiritual well being for several years while trying to learn and grow from the experience of living with a progressive mitochondrial disease, which has left me completely bedridden for the past year and a half. My dream through Dream Foundation was for a visit with author, Elizabeth Gilbert. I didn’t simply want to meet her; I wanted to learn and grow from her visit, so that I could continue to find ways to create spiritual growth and self-discovery in the days and weeks ahead. My overwhelming desire is to discover ways to create deep lasting joy, love and inner peace within my own heart and soul. I also wanted to have a conversation with Ms. Gilbert that, in years to come, might carry significance with my 15 month old daughter as she grows older and potentially embarks on her own quest for meaning in her life. I have had a lot of difficulty adequately putting into words the profound effect my time with Ms. Gilbert created. Ms. Gilbert came bearing gifts for me and my daughter that represented several of the destinations on her journey of self-discovery in her book, “Eat Pray Love.”
In place of the fear and worry, since my visit with Ms. Gilbert, I have not stopped thinking about her wise, gentle words and guidance. As I said to her after her visit, “Thank you for teaching me, sharing with me and just being present with me. You have given me beautiful eternal gifts that I can carry within myself no matter where in the universe I am… and I can share them with my family in the moments we are given together. Saying a simple ‘thank you’ seems so inadequate when you have forever changed my soul.” My appreciation extends to the Dream Foundation for coordinating this life altering visit for me and for giving me the opportunity of having many more days of joy and love within my life. Thank you for all that you do for adults with life threatening illnesses; for giving us the opportunity to “dream” even when many dreams seem too far out of reach due to illness. I will always be grateful for all that you have done for me and for my family, including the gifts that you have given to my little girl. With great appreciation, Malisa and family
The gifts she brought to us will always be treasured, but it was the intangible gifts she gave that meant the most. Those gifts will be something that I will always carry with me. They have become a part of my soul. When Ms. Gilbert initially came into our home, she spent time with us as a family. Within minutes, my little girl was on her lap and Ms. Gilbert was playing with Elmo (her favorite doll) with her. Our two hour visit together led to a deep, meaningful conversation about my fears, worries, and very personal thoughts about illness, life in general, and my daughter’s future, possibly growing up without a mom.

Soul Food:
Twin Connection Keeps Hope Alive By Dream Foundation Dream Coordinator, Emily Mullranin [Minnesota native, Emily Mullranin moved out to California and joined Dream Foundation in December of 2010. Since her time here, she has coordinated the fulfillment of more than 200 dreams.]
“We came into this world together. We have shared everything together. I need to be there when she goes,” said Diana about her identical twin sister, Della, 58, who
was suffering from Congestive Heart Failure.
Della lived in Anchorage, Alaska, while Diana resides in Billings, Montana. When Della was given a life expectancy of less than six months, it was her dream to have Diana, her twin sister and her best friend, visit her at home one last time yet she did not have the money or resources to make it happen. The day that Dream Foundation contacted Della’s doctor to begin planning her dream, Della was in the hospital in serious condition. She had taken over-the-counter medication for a common cold that caused an acute allergic reaction - the treatment of which caused Della to fall into a coma. While the doctors considered turning off life support, her family was told to prepare their last goodbyes. Sadly, Della’s dream of sharing an extended visit with her sister had turned into an emergency dream of getting her twin to Della’s bedside to say farewell. Diana was heartbroken and in disbelief with how fast everything had changed, but she was determined to see her twin sister. Through tears, she told Dream Foundation, “I need to be there when she goes.” Dream Foundation used donated Alaska Airlines miles and booked a 6:00 AM flight for the following morning.
Della and her daughter
asked Dream Foundation if there was a way to change her departure flight so that the two could have more time together. Before Della’s passing, she and her sister were able to spend time together, reminiscing and connecting. Says Diana:
“My gratitude is so intense for what Dream Foundation allowed for us to share. I have pictures now, and I have memories. I wouldn’t have any of that without Dream Foundation. I would just have sorrow and pain.”
That night as Diana packed her bag, Della’s doctor called and said that Della was not going to pull out of her condition, and that it was time to let her go. Since the flight was already booked, the doctor’s agreed to keep Della alive on the life support machines until the following afternoon. Diana prepared herself to say goodbye to her twin sister, and began coordinating a memorial service two days later. But when Diana entered Della’s Anchorage hospital room, she could not have been prepared for a bigger surprise: “I couldn’t believe it. I walked in to say goodbye to my sister and she was sitting up in bed smiling at me.” It seems that Della somehow knew that her twin sister was coming to visit, and she wasn’t going to let her prognosis hold her back. Della continued to improve; she was soon walking around the hospital and eating on her own. Two days after Diana arrived, the hospital released her to go home. Since the nature of her visit had changed so dramatically, Diana tentatively 4
We have all heard the stories of twins having a special, indescribable connection that runs deeper than blood; feeling each others pain, presence, and emotions. The story of Della and Diana is a real life example of the strength of that bond. Dream Foundation is fortunate to be a part of such an extraordinary dream.

Dreams Come True... SOUNDS, SONGS, LAUGHTER, AND GOODBYES
At 76 years of age, Sherrel - who hailed from Ypsilanti, Michigan - faced a tough battle with Multiple Sclerosis and lung cancer. Her family was her pride and joy, but because of a broken hearing aid she could barely carry on a conversation with her loved ones. Sherrel’s dream was to have her hearing aid repaired so that she could enjoy the voices of her children and grandchildren. A family celebration was held the day Dream Foundation had Sherrel’s hearing aid repaired. Along with her entire family, Sherrel went to Temple and was filled with love and emotion as she could hear every word. “We sang and let the worries of the diagnosis fall aside for a few precious moments as we enjoyed the melodic familiarity of the songs,” said Sherrel’s daughter. They celebrated her special day with a big family meal afterwards, and Sherrel smiled ear-to-ear as she listened to the voices of all of her favorite people. Although Sherrel had been given six months, she passed away one week to the day after she received her hearing aid. According to her caregivers, Sherrel had experienced a sense of completion. Being able to say goodbye and hear the “I love yous” gave her the peace she needed to move on.

FAMILY BONDING IN THE BIG APPLE Bruce is a 48-year old loving husband and father of two from Eagan, Minnesota. Fifteen months ago, Bruce’s life took a turn when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Due to his illness and treatments, Bruce spent much of the past months at home watching television. His favorite channel: the Food Network. As a result, the whole family took a liking to celebrity chef, Bobby Flay. Bruce wrote to us with a dream to go with his family to New York and eat at Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill Restaurant. Dream Foundation’s own Nora McNeely-Hurley and her husband, Michael, hand-delivered Bruces dream itinerary, which included an action-packed, three- night stay in The Big Apple. With donated Delta miles, Dream Foundation Bruce and his family on the set of Iron Chef sent Bruce’s whole family to New York where they got to watch the taping of the show, Iron Chef featuring their culinary hero, Bobby Flay. They left the studio with amazing memories and a wonderful gift basket from the Food Network. The second night included an evening at Mesa Grill, where the family enjoyed each other’s company. They said they’d never laughed so hard in their lives. The rest of their trip was spent seeing Mamma Mia, Times Square, Ground Zero, Rockefeller Center, NBC Studios and the Statue of Liberty. In a note to Dream Foundation from Bruce’s wife, Jennifer, she says, “This trip was simply magical and we will treasure these memories always.” Special thanks to Dream Foundation supporters A.J. Rice and Judith Peterson for helping make Bruce’s dream come true.

A ROAD TRIP WITH HER FAMILY Citrus Heights, California resident, Rodora, is 37 and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. In the last year, she has undergone surgery, hospitalizations, and numerous rounds of chemotherapy. Rodora wrote to the Dream Foundation, “I have not given up and I am still praying for a miracle.” Her dream to take a road trip along the Northern California coast with her family was recently fulfilled. The family has never take a vacation due to financial difficulties, spent three wonderful days in Pacifica at the Lighthouse Best Western and enjoyed time at the aquarium and the beach. Rodora was able to relax with her husband and son without the anxiety of her illness. She always dreamt of ordering room service and was thrilled to be able to do so in her hotel room overlooking the ocean. Her favorite part of the weekend getaway was holding her son in her arms on beach. Her miracle came true and it was more than she could have asked for. Rodora with her son at the beach
A DOLPHIN ESCAPE Nicole is a beautiful 21-year-old girl from Willowick, Ohio who was diagnosed with a rare gastrointestinal stromal tumor when she was 15-years-old. Much of Nicole’s strength comes from her mother, younger brother, aunt, and fiancé. While so many of Nicole’s friends are experiencing care-free lifestyles and burgeoning careers, Nicole has been bravely partaking in chemo and experimental treatments for the last five years. Nicole always wished to swim with dolphins. She loves them, collects them, and has one featured in a tattoo. Often Nicole has difficultly sleeping at night and finds comfort in conjuring images of the gentle creatures swimming in the ocean. Seeing dolphins face-to-face is all she has ever wanted to do.
Nicole seeing a dolphin face-to face
With the help of Shannon Hoagland of Cypress Resort, this past August Dream Foundation sent Nicole and her family on a trip to Orlando. There she got to live her dream of swimming with the dolphins at Discovery Cove while building beautiful memories that she can draw from as she continues her cancer battle. In Nicole’s note to Dream Foundation she said, “It’s something I’ll remember forever.”
WITNESSING A FAMILY MILESTONE Skip is from Glendora, California. At the age of 59, he suffers from prostate cancer. In coming to terms with his limited prognosis, Skip wants to have his days filled with happy memories and loving moments spent with his family. Skip’s beloved daughter attends Robert E. Cook College at Indiana University and is graduating with a W.R. Fulbright scholarship. Skip wrote to us of his dream to fly out and see his daughter graduate in person. He said he wants to be able to take part in this new chapter of his daughter’s life while congratulating her on all of her successes and accomplishments. Dream Foundation saw to it that Skip was able to share in this milestone with his daughter, brother and sister-in-law. “I cannot begin to tell you with what pride I sat through the ceremony as she was awarded her diploma,” said Skip. Following the ceremony, Skip enjoyed a loving dinner with his family. “Without your help, it would have been impossible for me to attend this momentous occasion,” Skip concluded in his note to Dream Foundation. 8

Bringing voice to our dream families Rain or Shine, a marine gets his dream By Chad Purcell (story condensed)
Through all the pain and all the difficulties, Julian Galindo never suffered an identity crisis. Once a Marine, always a Marine. But my, how it lifted Galindo’s spirits sky-high to be recognized again as a part of the Corps, even for just a final, fleeting moment. Last month Galindo, 51, had a lifelong desire fulfilled by the Dream Foundation, an organization that aims to grant wishes for adults in the end stages of their life. Galindo, who served in the Marine Corps from 1977 through 1997, got to visit Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., the oldest active post in the Marine Corps. It was a grueling trip to make for Galindo, who suffers from progressive supranuclear palsy, a rare brain disorder that causes serious and permanent problems with control of movement and balance. And yes, technically, it did rain on Galindo’s parade. The Dream Foundation flew Galindo and his wife, Vicky, to Marine Barracks Washington, also known as “8th & I,” to experience the pageantry of the Corps’ weekly parade. But the ceremony was canceled that night of May 14 because of a severe thunderstorm and the threat of lightning. Galindo said he was a little disappointed, but he still felt thrilled just to be at 8th & I. When word spread among the Marines, however, about the special guest in attendance, the Corps ended up staging an impromptu private performance for the Galindos. Once the weather cleared up, the Marines got back into their event uniforms as the Galindos watched from the battalion commander’s coveted seats.
Marines aren’t supposed to cry, Galindo said, but he couldn’t help it on what turned into a magical evening. “For him, it was like going home,” said Vicky Galindo. “For those guys to show him that much love, it was amazing.” It’s all enough to make Galindo feel like a lucky man, in many ways. And he said he can’t thank the Dream Foundation enough for making his wish come true. “Those Marines could’ve just gone home, and they didn’t have to stay around to do that for me,” Galindo said. “I owe all of that to the Dream Foundation, because without them none of this would’ve been possible.”
Kindness helps Lake Elsinore man battling cancer fix up yard By Allison McKinnon (story condensed)
Last Christmas Lake Elsinore resident Aaron Roy struggled to put up decorative lawn inflatables before his 2-year-old son, Eli, came home from day care. After the daylong ordeal and Santa finally in place, Roy retreated inside to rest and didn’t notice when someone stole the decorations. The theft was the least of the family’s worries.
Roy, 37, had a rare form of cancer called clear-cell sarcoma, which made it difficult for him to get out of bed, let alone decorate for the holidays. Lately, though, Roy got a boost from others trying to help him upgrade his backyard. With his illness, loss of work and medical expenses, Roy couldn’t finish plans for his backyard, which included a swingset for his two older stepchildren and Eli. Stephanie Rowe, Donna Roy’s friend and co-worker, made some phone calls. Rowe applied for a wish from the Dream Foundation, a nonprofit
organization that helps adults with cancer. Her wish for a large swingset was approved and the set was ordered from Wal-Mart within 24 hours. “We’re focusing on getting Aaron home to see all of this,” Norma Roy said as concrete was laid Monday. “He had so many plans for the backyard and he wanted Eli to have a safe place to play.” Norma Roy said the family is praying for a miracle. “But you can’t go backwards and say ‘I should have done this differently,’ so you go forward knowing that Aaron is so happy just to see all of these things done.”
Note: Aaron passed away before the swing set was complete, but he had the peace of mind of knowing plans were in place so that Eli could have a beautiful place to play.

Frank with his daughter Barbara overlooking the “Mighty Mo”
“This is My Dream Come True!”
After being diagnosed with lung cancer and given a 4-month prognosis, Frank’s final dream was to visit the Battleship Missouri Memorial in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Now 95, Frank served on the ship during World War II and witnessed Japan’s surrender – and the end of the War – on September 2, 1945. On the 65th anniversary of the surrender, Dream Foundation made it possible for Frank to visit the ship – one last time. Frank’s daughter, Barbara, says of the dream, “This trip was a homecoming of sorts for my dad. He was able to be with the ship that has made such an impact on his life and service.” Accompanied by his daughter, Frank was able to tour the “Mighty Mo” – and pay his final respects to the lives lost during a critical piece of American history. Frank was escorted by a motorcade of more than 20 Patriot Guard Riders and was greeted at the memorial by fellow WWII veterans. When Frank first saw the ship he said to his daughter, “Look at her, Barb! Isn’t she wonderful! This is a dream come true!” Part of Frank’s wish was to pay his final respects to his brotherin-law who was buried with the USS Arizona. Frank said, “The real heroes are the men and women who didn’t get to see the many years I was able to enjoy after the war.” After his dream was realized, Frank went on to say: “I could die tomorrow or this afternoon and it wouldn’t bother me one bit.”

Barbara’s Beautiful Homemake Creations
Barbara Sutcliffe Shares Her Artistry With Dream Families By Dream Foundation Intern, Jennifer Murphy Caring, giving, compassionate: These are just a few of the words that describe Barbara Sutcliffe. For more than ten years, Barbara has been creating beautiful, intricate handmade cards - and for the past three years, has been donating her work to Dream Foundation. In 2007, Barbara came across an article in the newspaper about Dream Foundation’s Flower Empower program and felt inspired to contribute. “I read that people donated flowers and cookies, and thought that was just so wonderful. I had the idea that my cards could bring joy to others as well.” With a box full of colorful cards in hand, Barbara went to the Dream Foundation office with a loving heart and a mission to help. Dream recipients, dream families, and Dream Foundation supporters have all been the recipients of Barbara’s beautiful creations. Her touching sympathy cards are sent to the families of dreamers who have passed. “The small gesture of giving someone a handmade card goes far beyond the words written inside the folded paper. It shows them you truly care.” Growing up in an artistic family, Barbara has always had a passion for crafts. Classes through the Adult Education program in Santa Barbara helped perfect her artistic skills. In January, 25-year Barbara’s inspiration lies in nature. Observing the colors of leaves and flowers on herpersonally daily morning walks, Barbara is driven by natural old Latoya, beauty in the world. Shewrote says, “The compassion that Dream Foundation embodies is to Dream one of the most beautiful things I have Foundation withever her come across.” dream to participate Barbara is a card connoisseur, from birthday cards, to sympathy cards, and even to in New York Fashion dream cards. Although she enjoys all kinds of cards, she says there is something Week andmaking the reason special about making cards for Dream Foundation. “ I think of the families and the behind her final wish. people going through emotional challenges that will be holding my cards in their hands. I put extra heart into these cards.”

Big Hearts In Texas, where everything is big… big hearts show big compassion for Dream Foundation. The Dallas Community Care Network held its 2nd annual charity auction on June 23, 2010, at Sherlock’s Pub & Grill to raise funds for the heartfelt wishes of Dream Foundation’s dream families. Danielle Borton, committee chair, and committee members, Courtney Layton and Gretchen Gore, secured wonderful, one-of-a-kind auction items -offering 100% of the proceeds to benefit Dream Foundation!

Flower Empower Rose Story Luncheon On Friday May 21, 2010, Dream Foundation held its First Annual Flower Empower luncheon at the fairytale setting of Rose Story Farm in Carpinteria. Hostesses Nora McNeely Hurley and Danielle Hahn welcomed 80 women for an afternoon of wine, food, flowers and fun. Following a champagne reception on a rose-covered knoll, guests headed to the Rose Story garden where they enjoyed a delicious lunch and a live auction run by Marla Phillips. Flower Empower dream recipient Derry Goder read from a card she received as part of the program, and explained how much the simple gesture of receiving flowers has offered hope and support during her own battle with illness. Special thanks to Nora McNeely Hurley, Danielle Hahn, Derry Goder, and the Event Committee: Tammy Hughes, Marla Phillips, Roxanne Solakian, and Jano Stack.
The event was attended by approximately 100 guests, which included dedicated social workers, members of the medical community, and local supporters. In all, it was a wonderful and festive evening, made even better because of the wishes that can now come true thanks to the giving hearts of the Community Care Network.
Kinely Winnaman and Brad Garrett
Power of Paint and Canvas On May 15, paint maven, Kinley Winnaman, offered her incredible artistic talents in support of dreams. The teenager hosted the “Art Noir Sweet 16” art showcase at the Willardson Gallery in Glendale, California. Brad Garrett served as the hilarious celebrity auctioneer and helped raise funds via sales of six paintings featuring Martin Luther King, Michael Jackson, Princess Diana, amongst other icons. Guests enjoyed perusing Kinley’s beautiful art and dancing to the music by “Twin,” Jessi & Ryan Collins. We are in awe of Kinley’s abilities with paint, and her compassion – at such a young age – to share her successes with families in need.
Iconic designer, Diane von Furstenberg and Kathy Siderman of Panache Clothing store hosted a beautiful Diane Von Furstenberg trunk show last June, and donated a portion of the sales to our dream families.
Sun Valley Soiree
Compassion is in Fashion in Sun Valley Our friends in Sun Valley blessed us once again with events and efforts in support of our dream families.
Kicking off the fashion event, Jonathan & Rebecca Neeley and Elisabeth & Marc Avery each opened up their gorgeous homes to share the Dream Foundation story with friends and guests. Live auctions, fabulous prizes and a powerful performance by Dream Ambassador, Taylor Dayne, topped the evening. We thank our Sun Valley dream makers for demonstrating that compassion is indeed the chosen fashion.

Dream Foundation 9th Annual Celebration of Dreams; A Homecoming for Fashion Partner, Ferragamo On November 6, 2010 Dream Foundation will host its 9th Annual Celebration of Dreams at the Bacara Resort and Spa in Santa Barbara, featuring a runway show by famed fashion luxury label, Salvatore Ferragamo. This year’s event is especially significant as Dream Foundation marks a major milestone with the fulfillment of its 10,000th dream in 2010. It is also a homecoming of sorts for our fashion partner... Paying homage to Salvatore Ferragamo’s local fashion roots played a role in Ferragmo’s decision to come to Santa Barbara and be part of the event. As outlined in Ferragamo’s Autobiography, “Shoemaker of Dreams,” Ferragamo immigrated to Santa Barbara from Naples in 1914 where he continued the family business of shoe repair with his two brothers.
Salvatore worked for the American Film Company for several years in Santa Barbara, and during that time began to study the architecture of American feet and style. Eventually Ferragamo became known as the shoe designer to the stars. He designed shoes for Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and even crafted Judy Garland’s red heels in the Wizard of Oz. Today, the Salvatore Ferragamo company has an international network of over 570 Ferragamo stores. This year’s Celebration of Dreams will honor Rob and Sheryl Lowe and Dr. Stephen Hosea. Special thanks to Peter Christman. Platinum and Gold Event Sponsors include Salvatore Ferragamo, American Airlines, CKE, Deckers Outdoor Corporation, Diani, Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, and West Coast Asset Management. Maryanne & Chris Edgecomb, Suzanne & David Johnson,Tracy & Michael Bollag, Hollye & Jeff Jacobs, Arlene Montesano & Ursula Nesbitt, Holly & Bob Murphy, Betsey & John Moller, The Norris-Rocaberte Family Foundation, Bui & Herb Simon, Roxanna & Randall Solakian, and Colleen & Michael Taylor.
The Grunzweig’s delicious farm-fresh spread.
Collective Nurturing On September 11, 2010, Jonathan and Tina Grunzweig hosted a “Farm To Table” dinner at their beautiful Los Olivos Ranch in honor of Dream Foundation. Many of the guests had a hand in the splendor of the feast, from the freshly plucked vegetables, to the local wines, and the convergence of good food and conversation. We are grateful for the uniting powers of the Grunzweigs for introducing us to new friends and faces. Indeed, compassion was as bountiful as the home-grown food on the table. 14

Employees making a difference in the lives of our Dreamers
Genentech Staff Creates a Field of Dreams On July 23, 2010, Genentech staff held their second annual fundraiser on behalf of Dream Foundation’s dream families. Approximately 60 employees from the Regulatory and Labeling Department participated in this year’s “Field of Dreams” fundraiser, which offered a day of festivities and good-hearted competition with a water balloon toss, horseshoes, and kickball. Genentech employees individually raised funds prior to the event by hosting bake sales and soliciting friends and family. Their efforts alone will allow for the fulfillment of 15 dreams – and serve as a testament to collective power of a compassionate and dedicated staff.
Towbes Group Gives Back to their Community This year, Dream Foundation had the great honor of being a recipient of a grant appointed by the staff of The Towbes Group. With corporate values focused on giving back to the community, each year employees of The Towbes Group research local nonprofits and identify where grant resources are needed most. Mary Sue Pouliet and Debbie Eastman spent time touring the office, meeting the entire staff, and learning about our dream stories. We thank Mary and Debbie for being such wonderful advocates for our foundation, and we send our sincere gratitude to the employees of the Towbes Group for their support of our dream families and their heartfelt final wishes.

The Dream Backers Why I support and raise funds for Dream Foundation by Judy Sellers
My son, Nathaniel K. Sharp lived 2 1⁄2 years from the time his cancer was discovered until the time he passed on at the age of 26. I wanted to honor him and his life in some way. That is why I started the Nathaniel K. Sharp Memorial Foundation. The next step was to figure out what organization to support. I started searching the internet. There were plenty of organizations that support children, but Nate was not a child when he took his “journey.” Underneath one of the major organizations for children was a link for Dream Foundation. The more I started researching Dream Foundation, the more convinced I was that this was just what I was looking for. My son was very blessed and fortunate to have friends and family that could support almost any dream he had. He had been in the Navy, during diagnosis, so all of his treatment was covered. That left him free to concentrate on “living.” That he did. During his life he had been blessed to be an exchange student to Iceland and a batboy for the California Angels. During the 2 1⁄2 years of his cancer journey, he fast forwarded his life. He got married, had a baby, and was in a major motion picture (Pearl Harbor). All this while going through radiation, quarter resection surgery of his right arm and shoulder, and chemotherapy. Reading through the Adopt a Dream portion of the Dream Foundation website, I realized how many “dream” families were unable to provide the simple comforts we were able offer Nathan during his battle with illness. How could I not support an organization that can help so many people just wanting to leave this world a little brighter for those left behind. What better way to honor Nathan’s life? Nathan’s life was all about living, no matter the circumstances. One of his favorite sayings was “Quitters never win and Winners never quit.” I will not quit raising funds to help others. Life is worth living.
Dream Foundation and the New Generation Dream Foundation is pleased to announce the official launch of our Youth Advisory Committee. Our young volunteers and interns have been such a wonderful force behind our mission, and we are thrilled to be able to channel the tremendous talents of this generation into a nation-wide dream committee. The Youth Advisory Committee is comprised of active, communityminded high school and college students who are interested in supporting dream families and their final wishes. Students who serve on the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) will gain hands-on experience with Dream Foundation’s mission and program support. They will learn how a nonprofit organization operates, earn community service hours, build their resumes, and - most importantly - give back to those in need. If you are interested in finding out more about the Youth Advisory Committee – or to fill out an application online - go to www.dreamfoundation.org/yac. You can also contact YAC Administrator Darcy McElroy at darcy@dreamfoundation.org.

Dreams Discovered In the Happiest of Places
Letters from Disney Dreamers
Dear Dear Dream DreamFoundation Foundation,
Words are difficult to find to thank you and Dream Foundation enough for our trip to Florida. Our family was struggling under the weight of my terminal disease. As the end gets closer, the pressure on all of my family increases. I feel so bad for the pain they have to endure just watching me go through this process. I worry about them when I’ll be gone. But for one week, as you can see from the picture I’ve enclosed, we were one happy, close, and loving family just on vacation. No one thought about disease or bills, work or school. I had an awesome time watching my husband and children laughing and smiling and being light-hearted for a change. The trip was a dream come true for sure. When we arrived home, the girls were surprised to find a very pretty, decorated box with items to welcome them back. Thank you for your generosity and for helping a family need. For a short period of time we were able to build some wonderful memories that I hope will carry my family through the next few difficult months. God bless you all, Janet
Dear Dream Foundation Foundation,
I – and my family – would like to thank you so much for the Disneyland Dream. It was so nice to watch my daughter smile and laugh...as opposed to watching me, afraid to go to sleep at night for fear of waking up in the morning thinking her mom may be gone. Our time in California allowed us to just be “us,” a normal, loving family, untouched by cancer. No sorrow. No fears of tomorrow. We escaped reality in the magical world of Disneyland, the warmth of the California sun, and the happiness on our children’s faces. We experienced the sounds of laughter versus the sounds of crying. Bright sparkling eyes versus red watery eyes. Smiling faces versus tear-stained cheeks. Four days of smile, laughing, seeing my daughter be a child and not worrying about her mom being ill. That’s worth more than words could say. God bless you and what you’re doing for people and their families, like me and mine. Catherine

Planned Giving “Leaving a Legacy of Dreams”
As a friend of the Dream Foundation, you’ve already been touched and moved by our mission of providing dreams each year to special people in need. Many of you have made generous donations to make those dreams happen. But what about the future? By doing something very simple now, you can help us to ensure an ongoing “legacy of dreams” for future generations and your family name. If you remember Dream Foundation in your will or revocable trust, you will leave a legacy that will continue our important work far into the future. Bequests of every size build our future financial strength and sustainability. “Elizabeth and I wanted to help the Dream Foundation continue its passion for making dreams come true for generations to come. That is why we have included Dream Foundation in our estate plans. We are honored to give a long term commitment to Dream Foundation so they can continue their gifts to terminally ill adults.” - Kenneth Slaught, Board Member Shelley renews her vows with her beloved husband on her dream vacation.
There are many reasons to include a charitable gift for Dream Foundation in your will or trust: •
It’s simple to do. It can be as easy as adding language stating, “I give $20,000 to the Dream Foundation” or “I give 10% of the residue of my estate to the Dream Foundation.”
•
You may make your commitment in memory or in honor of a loved one, and even set up a named endowment fund.
•
Tax-wise, it could be beneficial. Gifts to qualified charitable organizations reduce the value of your estate for tax purposes.
•
It’s an easy way to support the Dream Foundation, since it requires no money out of pocket now, and we are very grateful for bequests of any size.
•
You will be recognized as a charter member of our honorary Legacy Dream Circle, or you may choose to be anonymous.
We are deeply grateful to the following charter members of the Legacy Dream Circle: Richard Cazen Estate
Charlotte Doyle Davis Trust
Chris & Maryann Edgecomb
Tracy Greene Estate
Marcia Gay Harden
Nora McNeely-Hurley
Thomas Rollerson & Michael Erickson
Marilyn Cole-Shatz
Kenny & Elizabeth Slaught
Laurie Vandeberghe
Diana Wilson
If a gift through your will or living trust is of interest, please contact Carol Brown at the Dream Foundation, at 805.564.2131 or e-mail carol@dreamfoundation.org. She can provide specific bequest language for you to share with your attorney. You can also visit our website at www.dreamfoundation.org to see How to Help/Leave a Legacy.
