Choose to spend a full academic year, a semester or part of a summer living and learning in another country while taking a mix of unique courses and courses that count toward your major. You may also consider extending your semesterlong experience by arranging an internship abroad to begin after your study abroad ends.

Who Can Go: Majors: All majors.

GPA Requirement: 2.7 recommended.

the end of January for the following academic year for Round 1 (fall or spring travel), and by the end of March for Round 2 (spring only).

What It Costs: Because you are still a Clarkson student, tuition is paid to Clarkson. Fees for

housing are paid to the partner university or an area provider. Each student’s financial aid package remains the same during the study abroad exchange semester. “Studying abroad in Sweden allowed me to experience a culture without the filter of a

screen or book. I could dive in and taste the food, talk with the locals and learn through the participation of traditions and customs. Studying abroad also allowed me to travel all across Europe. Whether it was solo traveling in Italy or cruising through the Baltic Sea to Russia, I was thoroughly humbled and grateful to have had the experience. It will be something that I never forget.” — Jacob Merritt ’21

Research with Partner Institutions If you’re looking to dive into hands-on research in a new and exciting setting, many of our partner universities provide opportunities to perform research during the semester or the summer. Due to their highly personalized nature, these exchange experiences need to be arranged directly through the International Center. Our staff will work with you, your academic advisor and the international staff and faculty advisor at the partner institution to ensure that you are placed in a research project that aligns with your academic program.

Who Can Go: Majors: Any student interested in performing

research abroad is welcome to speak with our office about potential opportunities and options.

GPA Requirement: Determined by faculty at the partner institution.

What It Costs: Expenses are similar to — and in addition to — those of studying abroad. The cost of a research opportunity without study varies and can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

“Studying abroad has given me lifelong friends

from all over the world in addition to an appreciation of the earth and all its natural beauty and historical significance. [It] has broadened my mind and shown me that you can find like-minded people everywhere. This experience has helped me to better understand other people’s backgrounds and cultures. I can appreciate how unique each culture is and what it has to offer.” — Aady Balasubramanian ’18, (pictured below)

“Your greatest adventures and achievements occur in the face of fear. Take the plunge and move to a different country, learn a new language, surround yourself with new people who bring new ideas and opinions to the table and let it change your life. It may seem scary, but it will transform you in the best ways possible. True knowledge really does come from experience.” — Maria Cumbe ’17

Safety & Wellness Abroad At Clarkson, our biggest priority is ensuring your safety while abroad. Our International Center will work with you to: • Register travel with the Department of State’s STEP Program so you will receive updates about the country in which you are living or visiting. • Review information on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website regarding vaccines and travel advisories based on your area of travel. • Guide you through the challenges and risks of living abroad and traveling on your own. • Maintain a support system both in the new city of residence and at home for you to reach out to at any time. • Check in with you from time to time to see how you are doing and if there are ways to improve the experience. • Help you connect with others in the new city of residence and understand on-the-ground resources.

The International Center Our office is constantly receiving and reviewing the latest travel advisories. In the instance that there are issues in your geographic region that may impact your safety and well-being, we will assess situations on a case-by-case basis, increase our contact with you and make decisions about your ability to remain abroad.

How to Find and Apply for the Right Experience for You • Start early. Begin planning with your academic advisor during your first year so you can have the most options possible. If you miss this part, that’s okay! Talk to your academic advisor as soon as you can about your interests in global experiences. • Go to relevant events. The International Center hosts an annual Global Opportunities Fair, Study Abroad 101 sessions, Travel Tuesdays and more throughout the year. Try to attend at least one event during your first and second years at Clarkson. • Learn from your peers. Talk to other students who have already completed international travel that you’re

interested in to hear about their experiences and gain valuable firsthand insight. • Explore all your options. Use our CU Global website to understand all your options. Search by major, location, length of travel, type of program, semester and more. • Use outside resources. • Read up on where you plan to go: check out travel guides, cultural resources, and travel blogs. • Binge watch travel videos on YouTube, on everything from what to pack, to going through customs in a particular country. • Download some great travel apps.

• Visit us in the International Center. Our staff are here to assist you in finding the right experience to suit your goals, interests and needs. We are located in Suite 2300 in the Andrew S. Schuler Educational Resources Center at the heart of campus. • Watch out for application deadlines and requirements. Each type of global experience has different eligibility and travel requirements, as well as application instructions and deadlines. Stay on top of these to ensure you can travel!

Our Commitment to Sustainable Travel One of Clarkson’s goals for the whole University is to become carbon neutral by 2025. Airfare emissions related to international travel are unavoidable and account for around 3,000 tons of CO2 annually. Clarkson will achieve carbon neutrality from international air travel by offsetting carbon.

Offsetting Carbon Offsetting carbon is a market solution to climate change in which a different organization is paid to remove an amount of global warming gases from the atmosphere that is equivalent to what’s been emitted. This can be achieved through various activities, ranging from planting trees to destroying chemical refrigerants.
