reetings to you from Camp Hill, Pennsylvania.
Greetings to you from Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, where we are glad to be back at work in the Classical Academic Press (CAP) office.
We enter 2022 after another unprecedented year. In many ways, 2021 was an extension of 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic continued bringing with it all manner of challenge, controversy, and change. We are not the same people we were 24 months ago. Even though some return to normalcy has commenced, we still “Zoom” regularly, attend church services online, and attend classes or lectures virtually. COVID-19 has accelerated the digital and internet revolution for better and for worse. One unforeseen effect of the pandemic and the digital revolution is that many people across the nation have turned to private classical schools and public charter schools. Along the way, many have found classical education, thus accelerating the growth and renewal of classical education. That has translated to growth here at CAP as well. If you are new to classical education—welcome! If you have been doing this for a while, please put this catalog in the hand of a friend who you think should consider classical education. We all need to work together to help orient and equip those who are new to this movement. If you are new to classical education—welcome! If you have been doing this for a while, please put this catalog in the hand of a friend who you think should consider classical education. We all need to work together to help orient and equip those who are new to this movement. We are especially grateful that even in the midst of this tumultuous time, we have been able to continue producing resources that we hope will benefit you and your students. Here are just a few projects that we are excited about: •
•
We are thrilled to introduce Humanitas History of America Volume I: From Reformation to Revolution, the first release in our 6-volume history series for high school students. This large, collaborative project tells an unfolding narrative of Western Civilization directly through primary source documents. The first level of our lower grammar history series, The Curious Historian, was released in 2021. This year, we will be releasing Level 2, including the study of Greece and the Classical World.
Thank you again for partnering with us. We are grateful for the opportunity to walk with you during these remarkable times as we all seek to wisely raise up the next generation. Pax,

Study Latin First
10 Reasons to Choose Latin as Your Primary Foreign Language by Dr. Christopher Perrin There are countless benefits to studying Latin—indeed, it is no wonder that Latin has been a required subject in schools for centuries! You will likely find that the study of Latin brings life to your student’s learning and becomes a silver key that opens a dozen different doors to many fascinating paths. Here is a list of the top 10 reasons to choose Latin as your student’s primary foreign language. 1. B ecoming Multilingual: Latin never truly died, but rather evolved into French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian (the Romance languages). About 90 percent of the vocabulary of these languages comes from Latin. To learn Latin is therefore to begin a study of 6 languages at once. 2. E nglish Vocabulary and Grammar: Studying Latin aids students in mastering English. Since 50 percent of all English words are derived from Latin—along with 80–90 percent of all polysyllabic words—students will greatly expand their vocabulary. The regular grammar of Latin is also ideal for aiding the learning of English grammar or the grammar of many other languages. 3. P rofessions: Latin prepares students for many important professions that are steeped in Latin terms and phrases or in English words derived from Latin. These career fields include law, medicine, science, music, theology, philosophy, art, and literature. 4. W riting and Reading: The increased vocabulary and understanding of grammar gained by studying Latin enables students to write and read with greater ease and clarity. 5. E nglish Literature: Latin grants students a deeper understanding of English literature prior to 1950, much of which is replete with references and citations in Latin. 6. H istory: The study of Latin and its history and influence helps students to more fully understand and appreciate the Roman Empire, which has had profound and continuing effects on Western civilization. 7. G reat Literature and Art: Latin enables students to enjoy some of the most influential literature in the world—in the original language. Learning Latin well enough to read original Latin works is an attainable skill that imparts great satisfaction and enjoyment. Additionally, great works of art and monuments all over the world are frequently graced with Latin. 8. E ducational Virtues: The study of Latin is an ongoing practice in linguistic puzzle-solving that generally helps students to become close and thoughtful readers and writers. Many scholars believe it also hones the mental faculties, cultivating careful analysis and attention. 9. P leasure: Deciphering the “secret code” of Latin and learning how to puzzle-solve, see the meanings behind words, and read great authors in their own tongue are pleasures that will last students a lifetime. 10. S imultaneous Learning: As you can see, studying Latin is a way of performing advanced study in multiple subject areas simultaneously. It is a master art that enables students, in turn, to master other skills and other subjects.

Song School Latin
Children love to sing and love learning while singing! Just as they happily learn their ABCs to song, they will also learn Latin words, vocabulary, and phrases. We have employed this in Song School Latin Book 1 and Book 2. Both texts come with a bound-in CD filled with lively songs and chants that help children master their Latin vocabulary. Parents and educators frequently tell us how often children go around singing these fun (and funny) songs throughout the day on their own—even the toddlers tag along! Song School Latin Book 1 teaches primarily Latin vocabulary. Song School Latin Book 2 includes new vocabulary and a gentle, gradual introduction to Latin grammar.

“
Writing & Rhetoric is a true delight and so beautifully done: exposure to literature, history, and art [plus] av luable tools in the writing process and an introduction to academic concepts with just the right touch. A Classical Approach to the Progymnasmata What are the progymnasmata ( progym)? Derived from the same root for “gymnasium” and “gymnastics,” the word means “preliminary exercises.” It is a writing system so dynamic, so effective, that it outlasted the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance, and has even survived into early modern times. The progym will prepare your students to enjoy transforming that blank sheet of paper into a spectacular view from atop the pinnacle of their own imagination. The goal of the progym is to prepare students for the art of writing well and speaking persuasively. Through the Writing & Rhetoric series, students will not only learn these skills but also enjoy the journey to mastering modern composition—including narrative, expository, descriptive, and persuasive writing—while simultaneously developing unique rhetorical muscle. This series builds a solid foundation of mastery, imparting new skills incrementally while blending those taught in preceding books. The exercises are arranged from simple to more complex, and what’s more, they are cumulative, meaning that later exercises incorporate the skills acquired in preceding exercises.
See ClassicalAcademicPress.com/FAQs for placement recommendations. Writing & Rhetoric Teacher’s Editions include the complete student text, as well as answer keys, teacher’s notes, and explanations. For every writing assignment, this edition also supplies descriptions and examples of what excellent student writing should look like, providing the teacher with meaningful and concrete guidance. Writing & Rhetoric Audio Files allow students to engage their sense of hearing and their listening intelligence as the fables, parables, myths, tales, speeches, and historical narratives that correspond with each book are delivered aloud in a thoughtful manner by members of the CAP staff. By listening to the audio files, students will enjoy and internalize the stories before they enter them more deeply.

Writing & Rhetoric Book 11: Thesis Part 2 by Paul Kortepeter
In Writing & Rhetoric Book 11: Thesis Part 2, students will implement what they learned about writing well-crafted persuasive thesis essays in Writing & Rhetoric Book 10: Thesis Part 1 and continue to advance those skills by creating dynamic and powerful speeches. A vital part of rhetoric, oratory takes the connection between thinking and writing and extends it to public speaking. Students will learn from masters of oratory, past and present, by studying the great speeches of Cicero, Thurgood Marshall, Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy, and Malala Yousafzai, among others. When preparing and delivering their speeches, students will utilize the 5 canons of rhetoric and the common topics of invention to help them discover and refine their theses. Thesis Part 2 is designed to build students’ confidence in public speaking, teaching them the habits of good elocution and proper breathing. Incorporating the preceding skills learned throughout the series, students will research, write, and then deliver 3 practice speeches (or declamations) of their own creation in the manner of the branches of rhetoric: deliberative, judicial, and epideictic. As students gain skill, they will learn to delight in discourse as a way “to enlighten the understanding, please the imagination, move the passion, and influence the will” (George Campbell).

Writing & Rhetoric Book 12: Declamation
Ou r Future Plans!
Declamations, which are essentially reinterpretations of an important or famous speech, are the training exercises in eloquence that marked the capstone of Roman rhetorical instruction. Declamation reconstructs these ancient exercises and adapts them for use today, offering a systematic approach to rhetorical invention and enabling students to forge a clear pathway to eloquence. These declamation exercises will sharpen a variety of rhetorical skills and complete students’ prior training in eloquence. Along the way, they will gain oratorical dexterity through practice exercises and use the skills and strategies learned in the previous books to further build their persuasive imagination.

Mapping Your Writing, Logic, and Rhetoric Programs toward the Senior Thesis The senior thesis is a capstone project, the crowning achievement in a student’s academic journey. The path to the senior thesis begins with a strong foundation in writing, continues with a study of logic and how to build arguments, and culminates with the practice of rhetoric, the art of persuasion. Navigating this journey will provide numerous lasting benefits for students but can be complicated. To make mapping out your path more straightforward, we have supplied a year-by-year suggested track for 7th–12th graders. Following this recommended sequence will help students bring together what they’ve learned from their writing, logic, and rhetoric studies and apply those skills toward crafting a senior thesis: their most important high school work.

A Special Note for
Public & Charter Schools on Writing & Rhetoric
The Writing & Rhetoric series does not advocate a religious perspective in any way, but on occasion does include content from different religious, historical, and literary traditions as well as from secular sources. It does not pretend that there is no such thing as a religious viewpoint—but nor does it assume that its audience comes from a particular viewpoint. Writing & Rhetoric may use a parable or a narrative derived from a particular tradition, such as a Hebrew parable, a Christian proverb, a Chinese proverb, a Greek myth (once a religion), or a Muslim reference—all of which are strictly used as thoughtful literature (not as a religious lesson in any way). Writing & Rhetoric has been approved by many charter schools across the country, but we understand that each charter or traditional public school has different standards in terms of what they define as acceptable. Classical Academic Press is happy to provide a full list of these references for your school to review. Please contact us at Info@ ClassicalSubjects.com for more information.

What if the study of grammar could harness a child’s natural curiosity? What if it could be a source of delight to children? What if in later years students could apply their grammar knowledge and not just recite it? The Well-Ordered Language (WOL) series presents the study of language in a way that appeals to a child’s inborn curiosity and desire to collect, gather, and order. It presents grammar in a clear, systematic way, while simultaneously seeking to cultivate a child’s wonder of language by presenting instruction in the context of narrative and language, attractive illustrations, and samples taken from classic children’s literature and poetry. The WOL series is designed so that students actively engage with the grammatical concepts in each lesson, using language skills—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—along with songs and chants. Students will find the mastery of grammar achievable, meaningful, and delightful as they learn to gather and arrange words to express their thoughts clearly and accurately. In addition to the full text of the student edition, the Well-Ordered Language Teacher’s Editions include pedagogical guidance and tips embedded in the text, along with extensive explanations and guidance in WOL’s unique analytic approach to grammar. Suggested schedules, activities and games, and answers for all of the student exercises provide teachers with intentional material for use in guiding their students. The Well-Ordered Language Audio Files are lively tunes and chants that will help students learn grammar terms in a pleasurable and memorable way. These unique and delightful recordings feature a blend of musical genres and implement repetition, chanting, and singalong phrases to aid in achieving memorization. You will likely find your students singing these catchy songs outside of class!

HISTORY

History
With so many subjects to learn, and so little time to study them all, do we really want to spend time mired in the past, traveling along the dusty roads of former mighty empires such as Babylon, Greece, and Rome, when our students’ minds could be speeding along the superhighways of modern technology? We think the answer is an emphatic “Yes!” We agree with the words of well-known modern author Michael Crichton, who said, “If you don’t know history, then you don’t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.” We believe that history is about more than memorizing dates, reciting lists of kings and emperors, and remembering who won which battle in wars that changed the world forever. History is also the study of the people who lived during those events. From the beginning of recorded time, people have invented new ways to do things, created beauty in dreary places, and erected buildings and monuments that continue to inspire us. Some of these people became well-known figures and others were ordinary men and women like you and me. But all of us are part of the greater tree of humankind, and we each need to know what our part is as a leaf upon that tree. Without an understanding of the past, we will be less equipped to live in the present and plan for the future.
43 The Curious Historian Series
This new, 3-level grammar-school series presents the study of history and culture from the beginnings of civilization (Mesopotamia and Egypt) through the Middle Ages. Students will grow excited about history, see how people throughout the ages were both similar to and different from themselves, and learn to be scholars of the past who can make a difference in the future. The 3 levels, each consisting of 2 semester-long texts, will cover the following eras:
Level 1: Book 1A: Early & Middle Bronze Ages The Ancient World Book 1B: Late Bronze Age & Early Iron Age Level 2: Book 2A: Classical Greece The Classical World Book 2B: Classical Rome Level 3: Book 3A: Early Middle Ages (Migration Era and the Viking Age) The Medieval World Book 3B: Later Middle Ages (Crusades and the High Middle Ages) In 2022, we will be releasing Level 2, including the study of Greece and the Classical World. Check in with us at www.ClassicalAcademicPress.com for updates and status on upcoming levels!

Before Sargon, the land of Sumer was a group of city-states that were always fighting with each other. First one kingdom was stronger, and then another one took its place. No one city-state was the strongest for very long. But when Sargon came to conquer northern Mesopotamia, history was forever changed. At just the right time in history, Sargon, a native of the city of Kish in northern Sumer, marched south through Sumer and conquered all of the surrounding citystates with his large army. Though some Sumerian kings before him had also taken control of nearby city-states, none of them had been able to conquer all of them. But what these other Sumerian kings couldn’t do, Sargon accomplished. He built the Akkadian Empire, the first great empire in ancient Sumer (ca. 2400–2200 BC). How was it possible for Sargon to succeed when all of the Sumerian kings before him had failed? Well, there are many stories and legends about Sargon, not all of which are completely accurate. However, we do know some facts about him because descriptions of his achievements were carved on the walls of temples and statues built during his time. Though these temples and monuments no longer exist today, we know what was written on them thanks to the work of a faithful, unknown ancient scholar who carefully copied the words down before the structures were destroyed.2
Life and Legend: Sargon’s Story
(in Sargon’s own words)
M
y mother was a changeling, my father I never knew, and in secret my mother gave birth to me. She put me in a reed basket, sealed the lid with tar, and cast me adrift into the Euphrates River. The water carried me to Akki, the drawer of water. He lifted me out of the river, and I became his son. I was raised as a gardener until the goddess Ishtar gave me a place in the palace of Ur-Zababa, the king of Kish.3
We do know that Sargon was born an ordinary person, but we do not know who his parents were. He may have been an orphan. We also know that he was adopted and raised by a gardener (or garden manager), and that later on he took a job as a cupbearer in the palace of Ur-Zababa, the king of Kish. A cupbearer was a servant who tasted all of the king’s food and drink—particularly his wine—before they were given to the king. That way, if anything had been poisoned it would be the cupbearer, not the king, who died. But the role of cupbearer in ancient times was even more important than just tasting the food and drink. The man who held this position was How did Sargon get the title “the Great?” second in power only to the king, because only someone added to his name? Did Sargon call himself the king trusted deeply would be given such an importby this title, or was it given to him by later ant job. Sargon was a remarkable man, and he was not content to remain a cupbearer with limited power. As time went on, he continued to gain more and more political power 2. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this chapter is compiled from Samuel Noah Kramer, The Sumerians: Their History, Culture, and Character (Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1963), 59–63; and Susan Wise Bauer, The History of the Ancient World (New York: W.W. Norton, 2007), 95–103. 3. This story is summarized from Alfred J. Hoerth, Gerald L. Mattingly, and Edwin M. historians who wrote about him? We don’t know for sure where this title came from, but we do know that, based on his many accomplishments that you will read about in this chapter, history books today have given him this title. Here is just one of his major accomplishments: Sargon is the first person in recorded history who was able to muster a strong, powerful army, and he used this force to build a united empire from a scattered group of individual city-states. –A.D.

Humanitas
The Story of Humanity through Original Sources A brand-new upper-school humanities (humane arts and letters) curriculum, the Humanitas series is a 6-volume, unfolding narrative of Western Civilization taught directly through primary source documents. Rooted in the idea of ad fontes—a Latin term meaning “back to the fountains”— Humanitas reflects the understanding that all true learning depends on a return to those foundational sources that were responsible for shaping the cultures around them and influencing the course of subsequent history. C.S. Lewis considered ad fontes to be the bedrock principle in all curriculum selection, saying in his essay “On the Reading of Old Books”: “It has always therefore been one of my main endeavours as a teacher to persuade the young that firsthand knowledge is not only more worth acquiring than secondhand knowledge, but is usually much easier and more delightful to acquire.” The Humanitas curriculum is a collection of what have been deemed the most pertinent of these primary source documents, gathered as a way of offering students a curated exposition of how the ideas contained therein were the materials used to construct the stunning edifice we call Western Civilization. Presenting a comprehensive, 3-year course of study divided into semester-long volumes, the Humanitas series will cover ancient Greece and Rome (1 volume each), medieval Europe (2 volumes), and the great American experiment (2 volumes). Each volume reflects the contributions of a team of scholars and subject experts who rely on hundreds of the most critical source documents from the period in order to explain—through comprehensive introductions and a wealth of annotations—the contents of, connections between, and lasting influence of the primary documents. After completing this series, students will not only have been exposed to the greatest minds, art, ideas, people, and events of the last 2,000 years—they will also have received an education, in the truest sense of the word.
“This series is not an anthology, compendium, or interesting collection of important sources. Rather, each volume is a self-contained textbook in which the content of each source document has been distilled to its essence and made approachable to the audience while still staying as close to the original as possible.” —Chris Maiocca, Series Author/Editor a

Look for the complete 6-volume set in the upcoming years from Classical Academic Press!
History of America Volume I: From Reformation to Revolution This volume provides a curated tour of the peoples, ideas, and events that were most responsible for defining the historical epoch between the Protestant Reformation (ca. 1517) and the conclusion of the American Revolution (1783). Many of the documents in this volume have never been translated into modern English until now! After completing this volume, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the European monarchies, the great migration to America, the Enlightenment, early American culture, and the calling into existence of the most unique nation this world has ever seen. The 50 chapters include: • Critical writings, such as Hall’s Chronicle, which served as the basis for most of Shakespeare’s historical plays and gives us an exclusive, eyewitness account into King Henry’s tumultuous reign • Monumental treatises, such as Samuel Rutherford’s Lex Rex, the broadside that famously told Europe to abandon the monarchical system • Precious narratives, including George Washington’s letters describing a harrowing year at Valley Forge and William Bradford’s inspiring tale of the Pilgrim’s dream to become a “city on a hill”

LOGIC

Logic
Logic is like a two-sided coin: On one side it’s the art and on the other it’s the science of reasoning. We see logic used (and abused) on a regular basis whenever someone makes an argument. Most often, we see bad arguments—what we call “fallacies”—readily on display in the public sphere. But what we might not see is the poor architectural construction of those arguments. A comprehensive study of logic can and should be applied across the curriculum so that students are introduced to both the art and the science of arguing and reasoning well. Students should be developing and practicing critical thinking skills as early as the grammar stage and employing these skills long into adulthood. From exploring the informal fallacies (everyday arguments gone wrong) to using Aristotle’s rules for testing validity, the study of logic will teach students to craft accurate statements, build valid arguments, and pursue Truth.
“

The Art of Argument
Informal Logic by Aaron Larsen, DA & Joelle Hodge with Christopher Perrin, PhD
This year marks the 20th anniversary of our best-selling informal logic text, The Art of Argument ! To celebrate this milestone, we are releasing a new, revised edition that includes new examples, explanations, and a refreshed design. Look for this revised edition in 2022!* The new, revised version of The Art of Argument preserves all of the best features of the award-winning first edition while incorporating more comprehensive instruction about how to detect and avoid each of the 28 fallacies covered in the book and updated fallacy examples for today’s students. This edition also includes taxonomic fallacy trees to give students and teachers helpful visual guides as they seek to understand the commonalities and differences between the fallacies, plus several new dialogues with everyone’s favorite philosopher, Socrates! Additional explanations and examples have been provided in the teacher’s edition to better equip instructors to guide their students through the most challenging fallacy identifications. The result is a richer, fuller, more naturally flowing text that fosters wonder and delight as students learn to detect fallacious arguments in their own academic work, in the arguments of others, and in modern culture.

The Discovery of Deduction
Formal Logic by Aaron Larsen, DA & Joelle Hodge with Shelly Johnson, PhD The Discovery of Deduction: An Introduction to Formal Logic will welcome your students into the fascinating realm of formal, deductive logic. This text teaches students how an argument is put together—the form or structure of an argument. It pulls back the curtain to show students not only how arguments work, but also how to assess what’s going on in their own minds. The Discovery of Deduction is recommended for students who have studied informal fallacies, such as those taught in The Art of Argument ; however, the text does also stand on its own as an independent study of formal logic. e Discovery of Deduction (Student Edition) This book makes a subject usually reserved for study in Th college accessible and relevant to logic-stage students, who are at an age when they are beginning to engage with important ideas. This text emphasizes the practical and real-world application of soundly structured deductive logic. Using methods such as Socratic dialogue, ample discussion, and integration of other subjects, the text approaches formal logic in the ideal way for dialectic students. Starting with a short history of Aristotelian logic, students move from there to learning how to translate arguments from ordinary, conversational, or written narratives into categorical form. Students then build on those skills as they study how to construct syllogisms and test them for validity. As a part of this process, they study the square of opposition and relationships of equivalence, learning how to make valid propositional inferences and analyze syllogisms. e Discovery of Deduction Teacher’s Edition This edition features the entire student text, along with an Th answer key, teaching tips, sample essays, dialogues, and arguments. e Discovery of Deduction Video In these chapter-by-chapter lessons, instructor Joelle Hodge, coauthor of Th the text and Scholé Academy director, explains the concepts of formal logic, providing a variety of examples and applications along with plenty of visual aids to help students master the content. Students will also learn to avoid the pitfalls and mistakes often made when trying to tackle this challenging subject on their own.

Everyday Debate & Discussion Everyday Debate & Discussion: A Guide to Socratic Conversation, Informal Discussion, and Formal Debate not only shows students how to conduct informal and formal debates, but also how to develop good arguments by using solid logic and the resources available in their own thinking as well as in the world around them. Students will employ the techniques of logic and rhetoric, such as the common topics of definition, comparison, relationship, circumstance, and testimony. Additional study of ethos, pathos, and style is also included, as well as a study of debate arrangement. This book will give students debating confidence and open their eyes to the benefit of debate, disagreement, and discussion in their day-to-day life or in a formal debate setting. This book is the result of Dr. Johnson’s 10 years of experience leading Socratic discussion and debates in her classes. She has collaborated with other classical educators who have either used debate in their classrooms or coached debate teams. She writes, “Over the years, we have experimented, researched, practiced, and refined, and this book represents the ideas and practices we have discovered and perfected along the way. We are excited to share them with you.” This book is designed for 3 types of people: 1. those leading a debate team or class at a school; 2. logic or upper-school teachers who want to create a truly dialectical environment; 3. teachers who wish to enhance their teaching by including more robust discussion and debate. Everyday Debate & Discussion can be used over the course of 1 semester or for a full year. See our website for suggested schedules and free samples.

Finally, a rhetoric textbook especially well suited for today’s high school student! In order to defend the true, promote the good, and reveal the beautiful, we must do more than merely teach good content and clear thinking. We must also persuade. Rhetoric Alive! Book 1 explores the principles of winsome speech as developed in the foremost text on persuasion: Aristotle’s Rhetoric. The 15 chapters of Rhetoric Alive! step through the essential components of persuasion—the 3 appeals, the 3 types of speech, and the 5 canons. Each chapter includes an exemplary classic text for analysis and discussion, from Pericles’s “Funeral Oration” to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” Students also have plenty of practice developing their own rhetorical skill through the weekly workshops, imitation assignments, and oratory presentations. Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis by Alyssan Barnes, PhD
The senior thesis is a capstone project, the crowning achievement in a student’s academic journey. In completing the thesis, students bring all that they’ve learned—reading, writing, and arguing—to bear on one issue. They learn the background of the topic, analyze other people’s arguments, and synthesize their findings and discoveries, putting it all together to form a true, good, and beautiful whole. Through the use of workshops, assignments, and presentation practices, the Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis workbook walks students step-by-step through the process of writing and then delivering a thesis. Students will gradually draft the 6 parts of the thesis—introduction (exordium), statement of facts (narratio), thesis statement (partitio), argument (confirmatio), counterargument (refutatio), and conclusion (peroratio)—as they are taken through the thesis process from start to finish, from choosing a topic to crafting a snappy title, and everything in between. Versatile and straightforward, this text can be used by students who are only writing a thesis paper, only delivering a spoken address, or doing both. Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis is an all-in-one resource—journal/scratch pad/research notebook and rough-draft-to-final-copy writing guide—that will equip students to create a strong, compelling, and well-crafted senior thesis. Children have a natural desire to learn and to experience the world around them. Numerous studies have shown that children are uniquely suited to studying foreign languages because such study capitalizes on their inquisitive nature, providing them with an opportunity to explore methods of communication, decipher thought, and connect with others. Classical Academic Press was founded on the idea that study of the Latin language is an essential element of a classical education. We have since taken the pedagogy and structure of our flagship series, Song School Latin and Latin for Children, and applied them to our our Spanish and French programs.* We know that a key component of learning a foreign language is the distinction between learning common words and phrases and understanding the mechanics of the language well enough to communicate fluently and accurately. Designed both classically and creatively, CAP’s texts foster a love of foreign language in students as young as 1st grade through vocabulary and song. For older students, the texts build up to achievable challenges in grammatical instruction, immersion-style dialogues, and basic translation, creating a solid foundation to correctly speak and understand the language. *See p.12–23 for our Latin courses and pages 61–66 for a complete list of our other foreign-language offerings.

My rst language is Spanish, and I thought the material was well organized and challenging.

6868 From Wonder to Mastery:
A Transformative Model for Science Education
Science
by John D. Mays
Drawing on more than two decades in the classroom and a previous career in engineering, and Novare Science founder John D. Mays presents his unique approach to science education based on mastery learning that leads to long-term retention. Designed for teachers and administrators, From Wonder to Mastery contains all the vital content from Teaching Science So That Students Learn Science, John’s original guide to his pedagogical philosophy. This new text also offers a wealth of additional content, as well as an analysis of the research and literature on mastery learning. From Wonder to Mastery begins with a focus on the need to foster a sense of wonder in the classroom, and then goes on to explore how mastery learning is supported through the 4 essential areas of integration with science: epistemology, mathematics, history, and language. The final 5 chapters describe John’s mastery-learning model in detail. This book is an excellent resource for professional development, and an essential read for science teachers and administrators who want to build a premier science program at their school. From Wonder to Mastery: A Transformative Model for Science Education
A New Alternative for Science Education Most students tend to adopt a futile learning method called the Cram-Pass-Forget cycle, in which they cram for tests, pass them, and then soon forget most of what they learned. Success in such an environment revolves around jumping through hoops, not genuine learning. By contrast, Centripetal Press texts incorporate methods and curriculum materials designed to promote a LearnMaster-Retain cycle. This approach involves adopting a reducedscope curriculum with continuous review and ongoing accountability for retention. Instead of isolating science content from everything else, critical points of effective integration are developed, such as highlighting shared skills found in both science and math, history, and language. Students are encouraged to think and talk about the relationship between science/mathematics and the wonders of nature as students grow in their understanding of our endlessly fascinating and mysterious world.

Plato: The Great Philosopher-Educator
Also Available on:
by David Diener, PhD Plato is one of the principal founders of the Western intellectual tradition, and it is nearly impossible to examine the historical development of any academic topic without, knowingly or unknowingly, addressing Plato’s views. Regardless of our final assessment of Plato’s educational thought, it is unquestionable that his understanding of education has had a profound impact on the development of educational theory and practice around the world for nearly two and a half millennia. The study of his views is thus of great benefit, both as a means of examining fundamental questions about the nature of education addressed in his work, and also as a means of better understanding the historical roots of the Western educational tradition.
