1 Becoming Multilingual: Latin never truly died, but rather evolved into French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian (the Romance languages) . About 90 percent of the vocabulary of these languages comes from Latin To learn Latin is therefore to begin a study of 6 languages at once

A Classical Approach to the Progymnasmata

What are the progymnasmata ( progym)? Derived from the same root for “gymnasium” and “gymnastics,” the word means “preliminary exercises .” It is a writing system so dynamic, so effective, that it outlasted the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance, and has even survived into early modern times The progym will prepare your students to enjoy transforming that blank sheet of paper into a spectacular view from atop the pinnacle of their own imagination .

I would like to start Well-Ordered Language with my older students. Where can I begin?

Each WOL level consists of 2 books and is a full year of grammar . Schools and educators may adjust the number of exercises and assessments according to their needs The 4 levels of WOL build on one another just like a Latin program or any other language curriculum:

Because the Greeks were surrounded on three sides by water, they became good sailors. There was constant back-andforth business among the islands in between. The Greeks also traded with the neighboring kingdoms and civilizations around them.

Look back at the map on page 38 and picture the Greek peninsula and the island of Crete as making a in the middle of the “pointing”) toward the Near East. Can you recall where the other important civilizations at this time in history were located? The seafaring Phoenicians, the kingdoms of Egypt and the Levant, and the great empires of Mesopotamia were all to the east of Greece! It was as though many of the Greek the rest of the kingdoms of the ancient world. The Greeks had numerous opportunities to explore and trade far beyond the horizons of the Aegean.

Greek Social and Political Life

The polis also was the center of the Greeks’ social life. On important festival days, all sorts of community activities took place, including athletic competitions, theatrical productions, and certainly lots of feasting! The ancient Greeks were very social. They liked being around other people and spent as much time together as possible.

Throughout history, many people have chosen to live in the countryside or on the outskirts of a city, and only go into town when they need to for errands, appointments, or events. The opposite was true of the ancient Greeks!

Most Greek farmers chose to live in the day to tend to the crops. In the evenings, they returned home to the city to enjoy visiting with friends and taking a stroll through the square.

As you can see, community life was important to the ancient extended family, even though not everyone in the polis was related by blood.11

Logic is like a two-sided coin: On one side it’s the art and on the other it’s the science of reasoning . We see logic used (and abused) on a regular basis whenever someone makes an argument . Most often, we see bad arguments—what we call “fallacies”—readily on display in the public sphere . But what we might not see is the poor architectural construction of those arguments .
