G r eetings to you from Camp Hill, PA
We love creating and developing classical curricula, but doing so is akin to building a ship: it is neither fast nor simple work. Our philosophy of developing curricula is derived from the concept of festina lente—make haste slowly. This approach, though sometimes causing us to proceed more slowly than we would prefer, ensures that we are able to consistently produce refined, insightful, and beautiful content.
Complex projects such as building a ship or a curriculum are improved by a good team of sufficient size, so we have enlarged our editorial team to more effectively produce our two lines of history curricula: The Curious Historian (for upper grammar school and middle school) and Humanitas (for high school students). “Ships” from these lines include:
• The Curious Historian: Book 1A (Early & Middle Bronze Ages), Book 1B (Late Bronze Age & Early Iron Age), and Book 2A (Greece and the Classical World), which are currently available for purchase. Book 2B (Rome and the Classical World) will be released in 2023.
• Humanitas: American Origins Books 1 and 2 and The American Republic Books 1 and 2, which will be available in 2023, and Ancient Greece Books 1 and 2 and Ancient Rome Books 1 and 2, which will be available in 2024. Each set of two books is a semester’s worth of study across 50 curated and annotated primary source readings.
All of our history texts are meticulously written and researched by teams of authors, scholars, and editors and feature a lively, meaningful voice and tone and a beautiful, full-color design.
This year we are also excited to be releasing:
• New Edition of The Art of Argument: Twenty years after its first publication, Dr. Aaron Larsen and Jolie Hodge have teamed up once again to revise and completely update this bestselling book with contemporary examples, analogies, and illustrations, along with a fresh, full-color design.
• Novare Life Science: Our science team, led by John Mays, has completed our Life Science text, which is designed for 6th graders. Like all our Novare texts, it is pithy, clear, full of wonder, and beautifully illustrated.
A number of other new and revised books are also due to be released in the 2023–2024 school year, including a revised and updated Introduction to Classical Education; The Festive School, an invitation to making celebration and a sense of wonder central to our educational efforts; a new text on the educational philosophy of Charlotte Mason; and The Enchanted Cosmos, an exploration of what classical math education used to be and should be again.
In addition to publishing excellent texts, Classical Academic Press also provides more than 80 recorded courses by veteran classical teachers and professors through our online teacher training platform, ClassicalU. We also offer four online classical schools: Scholé Academy (ecumenical), St. Raphael School (Orthodox), The Canterbury House (Anglican), and The Aquinas House (Catholic). A network of over 100 homeschooling communities is available through Scholé Communities
The renewal of classical education continues to grow throughout the United States and has begun to flourish in China, Africa, Australia, and parts of Asia and Latin America. This is no surprise, since classical education is the inheritance not only of Europe and the United States but of humanity. Thank you for your partnership with us as we all strive to bring the best education we can to our families and communities, both in the United States and abroad.

Study Latin First
10 Reasons to Choose Latin as Your Primary Foreign Language
by Dr. Christopher PerrinThere are countless benefits to studying Latin—indeed, it is no wonder that Latin has been a required subject in schools for centuries! You will likely find that the study of Latin brings life to your student’s learning and becomes a silver key that opens a dozen different doors. Here is a list of the top 10 reasons to choose Latin as your student’s primary foreign language.
1. Becoming Multilingual: Latin evolved into French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian (the Romance languages), and therefore to learn Latin is to begin a study of 6 languages at once. In fact, about 90 percent of the vocabulary of the Romance languages comes from Latin.
2. English Vocabulary and Grammar: Studying Latin aids students in mastering English. Fifty percent of all English words are derived from Latin—along with 80–90 percent of all polysyllabic words. Learning Latin will greatly expand students’ vocabulary. The regular grammar of Latin is also ideal for learning English grammar or grammar of many other languages.
3. Professions: Latin prepares students for many important professions that are steeped in Latin terms and phrases. These career fields include law, medicine, science, music, theology, philosophy, art, and literature.
4. Writing and Reading: The increased vocabulary and understanding of grammar gained by studying Latin enables students to write and read with greater ease and clarity.
5. English Literature: Latin grants students a deeper understanding of English literature prior to 1950, much of which is replete with references and citations in Latin.
6. History: The study of Latin and its history helps students to more fully understand and appreciate the Roman Empire, which has had profound and continuing effects on Western Civilization.
7. Great Literature and Art: Latin enables students to enjoy some of the most influential literature and art in the world. Learning Latin well enough to read original Latin works is an attainable skill that imparts great satisfaction and enjoyment. Great works of arts and monuments all over the world are frequently graced with Latin as well..
8. Educational Virtues: The study of Latin develops attention and analysis skills that help students become attentive and thoughtful readers and writers.
9. Pleasure: Deciphering the “secret code” of Latin and learning how to puzzle-solve, see the meanings behind words, and read great authors in their own tongue are a pleasure that will last students a lifetime.
10. Simultaneous Learning: Studying Latin can be a concurrent experience for students, allowing them to master other skills and subjects as they study.
SONG SCHOOL LATIN Song School Latin
Children love to sing and love learning while singing! Just as they happily learn their ABCs to song, they will also learn Latin words, vocabulary, and phrases. We have employed this in Song School Latin Book 1 and Book 2. Both texts come with a bound-in CD filled with lively songs and chants that help children master their Latin vocabulary. Parents and educators frequently tell us how often children go around singing these fun (and funny) songs throughout the day on their own—even the toddlers tag along!
Song School Latin Book 1 teaches primarily Latin vocabulary. Song School Latin Book 2 includes new vocabulary and a gentle, gradual introduction to Latin grammar.
What’s Included in the Full Program?
Student Edition Both an introductory textbook and a workbook, each Song School Latin (SSL) student edition is filled with engaging material that will help students delight in learning basic Latin! Lessons are peppered with songs, enjoyable vocabulary, illustrations, handwriting practice, stories, games, and engaging activities, providing young students (1st–3rd grade) with a vocabulary-based introduction to this classical language.

The SSL teaching videos feature engaging Latin teachers who narrate the vocabulary and explain the simple grammar lessons. Students will also enjoy following the animated adventures of Simeon the Monkey, whose continuing storyline incorporates the weekly vocabulary words. Animated derivative “river” episodes highlight the way in which Latin words have come into various languages, including English, Spanish, and French.

WRITING
Writing & Rhetoric
“Writing & Rhetoric is a true delight and so beautifully done: exposure to literature, history, and art [plus] valuable tools in the writing process and an introduction to academic concepts with just the right touch. I’m genuinely excited to continue with the series and to revisit books with younger children.”
—Jeannine (Minnesota)
A Classical Approach to the Progymnasmata
What are the progymnasmata ( progym)? Derived from the same root for “gymnasium” and “gymnastics,” the word means “preliminary exercises.” It is a writing system so dynamic, so effective, that it outlasted the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance, and has even survived into early modern times. The progym will prepare your students to enjoy transforming that blank sheet of paper into a spectacular view from atop the pinnacle of their own imagination.
The goal of the progym is to prepare students for the art of writing well and speaking persuasively. Through the Writing & Rhetoric series, students will not only learn these skills but also enjoy the journey to mastering modern composition—including narrative, expository, descriptive, and persuasive writing—while simultaneously developing unique rhetorical muscle. This series builds a solid foundation of mastery, imparting new skills incrementally while blending those taught in preceding books. The exercises are arranged from simple to more complex, and what’s more, they are cumulative, meaning that later exercises incorporate the skills acquired in preceding exercises.
See ClassicalAcademicPress.com/FAQs for placement recommendations.
Writing & Rhetoric Teacher’s Editions include the complete student text, as well as answer keys, teacher’s notes, and explanations. For every writing assignment, this edition also supplies descriptions and examples of what excellent student writing should look like, providing the teacher with meaningful and concrete guidance.
Writing & Rhetoric Audio Files allow students to engage their sense of hearing and their listening intelligence as the fables, parables, myths, tales, speeches, and historical narratives that correspond with each book are delivered aloud in a thoughtful manner by members of the CAP staff. By listening to the audio files, students will enjoy and internalize the stories before they enter them more deeply.

In this book, the thinking and exercises occur within the framework of stories about historical figures such as King Arthur, Lady Godiva, King Canute, Omar Khayyam, and more.

Writing & Rhetoric Book 12: Declamation
Declamations, which are essentially reinterpretations of an important or famous speech, are the training exercises in eloquence that marked the capstone of Roman rhetorical instruction. Declamation reconstructs these ancient exercises and adapts them for use today, offering a systematic approach to rhetorical invention and enabling students to forge a clear pathway to eloquence. These declamation exercises will sharpen a variety of rhetorical skills and complete students’ prior training in eloquence. Along the way, they will gain oratorical dexterity through practice exercises and use the skills and strategies learned in the previous books to further build their persuasive imagination.
Our Future Plans!
Mapping Your Writing, Logic, and Rhetoric Programs toward the Senior Thesis
The senior thesis is a capstone project, the crowning achievement in a student’s academic journey. The path to the senior thesis begins with a strong foundation in writing, continues with a study of logic and how to build arguments, and culminates with the practice of rhetoric, the art of persuasion. Navigating this journey will provide numerous lasting benefits for students but can be complicated. To make mapping out your path more straightforward, we have supplied a year-by-year suggested track for 7th–12th graders. Following this recommended sequence will help students bring together what they’ve learned from their writing, logic, and rhetoric studies and apply those skills toward crafting a senior thesis: their most important high school work.

Well-Ordered Language
“
After a year of ‘trying something different,’ my daughter was begging to return to the Well-Ordered Language program. We love the simplicity, relevancy, and ease of use. The books are lovely, the writing engaging, and the examples and exercises are helpful and easy to use. Hands down, our favorite grammar program. And we have tried many!
What if the study of grammar could harness a child’s natural curiosity? What if it could be a source of delight to children? What if in later years students could apply their grammar knowledge and not just recite it?
The Well-Ordered Language (WOL) series presents the study of language in a way that appeals to a child’s inborn curiosity and desire to collect, gather, and order. It presents grammar in a clear, systematic way, while simultaneously seeking to cultivate a child’s wonder of language by presenting instruction in the context of narrative and language, attractive illustrations, and samples taken from classic children’s literature and poetry.
The WOL series is designed so that students actively engage with the grammatical concepts in each lesson, using language skills—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—along with songs and chants. Students will find the mastery of grammar achievable, meaningful, and delightful as they learn to gather and arrange words to express their thoughts clearly and accurately.
In addition to the full text of the student edition, the Well-Ordered Language Teacher’s Editions include pedagogical guidance and tips embedded in the text, along with extensive explanations and guidance in WOL’s unique analytic approach to grammar. Suggested schedules, activities and games, and answers for all of the student exercises provide teachers with intentional material for use in guiding their students.
The Well-Ordered Language Audio Files are lively tunes and chants that will help students learn grammar terms in a pleasurable and memorable way. These unique and delightful recordings feature a blend of musical genres and implement repetition, chanting, and sing-along phrases to aid in achieving memorization. You will likely find your students singing these catchy songs outside of class!

I would like to start Well-Ordered Language with my older student. Where can I begin?
Each WOL level consists of 2 books and is a full year of grammar. Schools and homeschool educators may adjust the number of exercises and assessments according to their needs. The 4 levels of WOL build on one another just like a Latin program or any other language curriculum:
• Beginning Grammar—Level 1A and 1B
• Intermediate Grammar—Level 2A and 2B
• Advanced Grammar—Level 3A and 3B
• Intensive Grammar—Level 4A and 4B
If your student is very comfortable with the 8 parts of speech and their functions, you should be able to move directly into Level 2A. We recommend reviewing the table of contents and having your student work through some of the exercises provided in the free online sample to determine if moving ahead will be the best fit!

The instructors and administrative team at Scholé Academy endeavor to balance rest with rigor. We strive to create a culture in which, to quote John Amos Comenius, the father of modern education, “teachers may teach less, but learners may learn more.” Our educators hope to strike just the right balance, blending active learning through studies with a contemplative approach that cultivates wonder and demonstrates the thrill of learning. We’ve built an exceptional team of educators who are passionate about classical Christian education and who are excited to work with your students.

THE GREAT HALL
Since its inception, Scholé Academy and its parent company, Classical Academic Press (CAP), have become a gathering place, a piazza of sorts, of classical Christian ideas. While we have known that the work of reclaiming classical education and the liberal arts tradition is both a worthy endeavor and a hope shared by many Christians, we could not have predicted how widely the movement would be embraced by Christians from many denominations and traditions. It has been thrilling to watch the classical Christian renewal grow over the last 25 years, crossing theological boundaries as it has grown!
Through our common educational goals, CAP and Scholé Academy have found opportunities to work with and meet the needs of Protestants, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians alike. Already, Scholé Academy welcomes educators, families, and students representing these three great Christian traditions.
As members of various Christian communities continue to be drawn to the work we are doing, we’ve found it necessary to begin thinking more strategically about how we can continue to meet the common needs of the whole, while being careful not to dilute, gloss over, or tear away the distinctive natures of each faith community in its respective teachings, cultures, and traditions.
To respond to this need, Scholé Academy has drawn inspiration from C.S. Lewis’s seminal work, Mere Christianity, in which he describes a “great hall” off of which are several other rooms, each representing the various Christian traditions. The great hall features “orthodox” Christian beliefs: those common to us all. Each separate room, however, is built around a specific tradition, honoring its real and important differences. “It is in the rooms, not in the hall, that there are fires and chairs and meals,” Lewis writes.
Live, Online Classical Education in the Orthodox Tradition
St. Raphael School (SRS) is part of Scholé Academy and operates as a “school within a school,” serving students and families in the Orthodox Christian tradition. SRS offers classes for K–12 students primarily based on the classic Good and Great Books from Western and Eastern European culture.

St. Raphael School has filled a gap in our homeschool experience. Having the shared language of the Orthodox Church, our traditions, and festal cycle in her classrooms has been a true blessing for my daughter. SRS has become more than weekly classes, but also an extension of our Orthodox and homeschool communities, which is a truly unique experience in an online school.

Live, Online Classical Education in the Anglican Tradition
The Canterbury House of Studies sits within Scholé’s classical academy as a small collection of courses offered in the Anglican/ Episcopalian tradition. It seeks to provide a place where Anglican students can learn with like-minded believers in the conviction of their faith. Canterbury offers classes under Scholé Academy for grades 6-12.
Church History
Canterbury’s Church History courses cover not only the content of the Bible, but also changes in theological thought over time. Students become familiar with key elements of discussing the Church to enter into the coversations of the Church Fathers, ecumenical councils, and more.
Anglican Foundations
Courses on Anglicanism itself cover catechetical studies of Anglican theology and doctrine stemming from the Book of Common Prayer and the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion. Courses discuss content beginning with 5th century England to the modern-day Anglican church.
Moral Theology
Discussing the development of moral theology since Aristotle and the development of Christian moral theology from thinkers such as Aquinas, students uncover the rudimentary questions surrounding how to read scripture, pray, and worship in the Book of Common Prayer.

I appreciate [the teacher’s] focus on orthodoxy and the bigger picture of Jesus throughout the text, in addition to her emphasis on the culture within the New Testament and the focus on accurate historical setting and history. I easily trust her with our girls in this class because I do feel like she deeply cares about cultivating virtue in their lives, forming their minds and hearts, while teaching biblical truths and liturgical traditions.
— Holly Mulford, CHoS Parent
Live, Online Classical Education in the Catholic Tradition
Aquinas House of Studies seeks to support the spiritual formation of students into the image of Christ through fostering a strong prayer life fixed firmly in the liturgical traditions of the Church aided by the study of Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the Catholic Liberal Arts tradition. Aquinas offers classes under Scholé Academy for grades 4 –12.
Science
Science courses in the Catholic tradition confront the narrative pitting the Church against science, examine natural philosophy, and study Catholic scientists’ contributions to the field.
Saints
Students pursue studies surrounding the lives of saints throughout history, including St. Thérèse of Lisieux, while engaging in theological discussions about spiritual life. Students also study sacred art and music to complement the reading and refine their ability to imitate their holy examples.
Church History
Contextualizing the Catholic Church’s role in history, students read biographies of the saints, study humanities such as literature and sacred art, and historical events that have shaped Catholicism, such as the Edict of Milan and the Council of Trent.

History
With so many subjects to learn, and so little time to study them all, do we really want to spend time mired in the past, traveling along the dusty roads of former mighty empires such as Babylon, Greece, and Rome, when our students’ minds could be speeding along the superhighways of modern technology? We think the answer is an emphatic “Yes!” We agree with the words of well-known modern author Michael Crichton, who said, “If you don’t know history, then you don’t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.”
We believe that history is about more than memorizing dates, reciting lists of kings and emperors, and remembering who won which battle in wars that changed the world forever. History is also the study of the people who lived during those events. From the beginning of recorded time, people have invented new ways to do things, created beauty in dreary places, and erected buildings and monuments that continue to inspire us. Some of these people became well-known figures and others were ordinary men and women like you and me. But all of us are part of the greater tree of humankind, and we each need to know what our part is as a leaf upon that tree. Without an understanding of the past, we will be less equipped to live in the present and plan for the future.
The Curious Historian Series
This 3-level grammar-school series presents the study of history and culture from the beginnings of civilization (Mesopotamia and Egypt) through the Middle Ages. Students will grow excited about history, see how people throughout the ages were both similar to and different from themselves, and learn to be scholars of the past who can make a difference in the future.
The 3 levels, each consisting of 2 semester-long texts, will cover the following eras:
Level 1:
The Ancient World Book 1A: Early & Middle Bronze Ages
Book 1B: Late Bronze & Iron Ages
The Classical World Book 2A: Greece and the Classical Age
Level 2:
Book 2B: Rome and the Classical Age
The Medieval World Book 3A: Early Middle Ages
Level 3:
Book 3B: Late Middle Ages
In 2023, we will complete our release of Level 2, including the study of Rome and the Classical World. Check in with us at www.ClassicalAcademicPress.com for updates and status on upcoming levels!
“The twists and turns of history affect everyone alive today. The events of history have helped make you who you are! So, it’s good to be curious and ask questions about the generations that came before you. And it’s good to know as much about the past as possible so that you can understand this wonderful, complicated world we live in.
—From the Level 1A introduction

38 and picture the Greek peninsula and the island of Crete as making a in the middle of the “pointing”) toward the Near East. Can you recall where the other important civilizations at this time in history were located? The seafaring Phoenicians, the kingdoms of Egypt and the Levant, and the great empires of Mesopotamia were all to the east of Greece! It was as though many of the Greek the rest of the kingdoms of the ancient world. The Greeks had numerous opportunities to explore and trade far beyond the horizons of the Aegean.
Greek Social and Political Life
The polis days, all sorts of community activities took place, including athletic competitions, theatrical productions, and certainly lots of feasting! The ancient Greeks were very social. They liked being around other people and spent as much time together as possible.
Throughout history, many people have chosen to live in the countryside or on the outskirts of a city, and only go into town when they need to for errands, appointments, or events. The opposite was true of the ancient Greeks!
Most Greek farmers chose to live in the day to tend to the crops. In the evenings, they returned home to the city to enjoy visiting with friends and taking a stroll through the square.

Humanitas collects, in Matthew Arnold’s phrase, “the best which has been thought and said” from our past in order to give students a firm foundation for the study of history.
Presented in a comprehensive, 4-year course of study, each set of books reflects the contributions of a team of scholars and subject experts who have composed introductions and afterwords to contextualize each primary source document and annotated the texts to enable students to meaningfully engage each reading. Along the way, students will encounter timelines and maps, accounts of contemporary figures and events, and stunning artwork about the subjects depicted. After completing this series, students will not only have been exposed to the study of Humanitas—the greatest minds, art, ideas, people, and events of the last 3,000 years—they will also be prepared to contribute to it.
e Humanitas series for high school students covers the following eras:
Humanitas: America
by Christopher Maiocca, MA, Author and Series EditorHumanitas: American Origins Books 1 & 2
This set of two books provides a curated tour of the peoples, ideas, and events that were most responsible for defining the historical epoch between the Protestant Reformation (ca. 1517) and the conclusion of the American Revolution (1783). Many of the documents in this volume have never been translated into modern English until now! After completing this volume, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the European monarchies, the great migration to America, the Enlightenment, early American culture, and the calling into existence of the most unique nation this world has ever seen.
The 50 chapters (24 in Book 1 and 26 in Book 2) include:
• Critical writings, such as Hall’s Chronicle, which served as the basis for most of Shakespeare’s historical plays and gives us an exclusive, eyewitness account into King Henry’s tumultuous reign
• Monumental treatises, such as Samuel Rutherford’s Lex Rex, the broadside that famously told Europe to abandon the monarchical system
• Precious narratives, including George Washington’s letters describing a harrowing year at Valley Forge and William Bradford’s inspiring tale of the Pilgrim’s dream to become a “city on a hill” and the attempts to patch the world’s newest nation back together again
Humanitas: The American Republic Books 1 & 2
This set of two books provides an unfolding, historical narrative of the peoples, ideas, culture, and events that were most responsible for shaping the epoch between the conclusion of the American Revolution (1783) and the Reconstruction (ca. 1877), as told directly through eyewitness accounts. The primary source documents present students with an unparalleled view into the trials and triumphs of a nation nearly destroyed by civil war.
The 50 chapters discuss historical themes including:
• The creation of a novel government in the wake of the Revolution
• The divergent paths that the North and South would eventually trod
• The fierce debates over slavery and the treatment of Natives
• The bitter conflicts that took nearly three-quarters of a million lives, and the attempts to patch the world’s newest nation back together again

Humanitas: Greece & Rome
by Rick Trumbo, MA, Volume Editor; Christopher Maiocca, MA, Series EditorHumanitas: Ancient Greece Books 1 & 2
Beginning with the mythic past and moving into the concrete particulars of history, these books cover the rise and fall of Ancient Greece. The documents chart the development of Greek culture, the conflict with Persia, the rise and eventual breakdown of the Greek polis in Athens and Sparta during the Peloponnesian War, and Alexander the Great’s conquest of the known world. After completing these books, students will be familiar with the influence of myth on Greek culture, the political history of ancient Greece, the advent of philosophy and science, and the various Greek visions of good life and just community. The 50 chapters include:
• Mythic tales about the creation of the cosmos, the struggle between the gods, and the fall of Troy. These myths shape the Greek consciousness and raise questions about the right relation of man to himself, the polis, the cosmos, and the divine
• Historical accounts of Herodotus and Thucydides, which celebrate the triumph of the Greeks against the Persians and the destructive conflict of the Peloponnesian War
• Political documents such as the Constitution of Athens and the Constitution of the Lacedaemonians
• Writings of the first philosophers and scientists, which directly affect the rest of Western history
Humanitas: Ancient Rome Books 1 & 2
From the founding of Rome to the sack of the eternal city by Alaric the Goth in AD 410, Ancient Rome Books 1 & 2 cover the rise of the Roman Republic and the slow decline and fall of the Roman empire. These books begin with the founding myths, chart the wars with Carthage and the influence of Hellenism, and cover the establishment and breaking of the Roman empire. Along the way, the documents in these books will illustrate the virtues that defined Roman citizenship, chart the birth and spread of Christianity, and provide insight into Roman education, philosophy, and material culture. The 50 chapters include:
• Selections from the golden age of Latin poetry by Virgil, Horace, Ovid, and Catullus, which serve to define artistic ideals in the classical world and later inspire poets such as Dante, Shakespeare, and Alexander Pope
• Documents that offer a window into life in Rome, whether Petronius on Roman luxury, Martial’s depiction of Roman games and the arena, or accounts of Roman women
• Pagan and Christian accounts of the rise of Christianity and the fall of Rome
• Texts, such as Caesar’s, that depict the various struggles for power that define the Roman empire

Logic
Logic is like a two-sided coin: On one side it’s the art and on the other it’s the science of reasoning. We see logic used (and abused) on a regular basis whenever someone makes an argument. Most often, we see bad arguments—what we call “fallacies”—readily on display in the public sphere. But what we might not see is the poor architectural construction of those arguments. A comprehensive study of logic can and should be applied across the curriculum so that students are introduced to both the art and the science of arguing and reasoning well. Students should be developing and practicing critical thinking skills as early as the grammar stage and employing these skills long into adulthood. From exploring the informal fallacies (everyday arguments gone wrong) to using Aristotle’s rules for testing validity, the study of logic will teach students to craft accurate statements, build valid arguments, and pursue Truth.
“CAP’s writing and logic programs offer the most comprehensive and engaging instruction that I have seen in the K–12 market. Students will be very well prepared to meet unique writing challenges in both university and workplace settings.”
—Abigail (Oklahoma)
Suggested Logic & Rhetoric Sequence Using Classical Academic Press Logic & Rhetoric Texts
We use logic every day, often employing it to distinguish logical arguments from those that are unreasonable. Beginning in the earliest stages of child development, the building blocks for this skill are shaped and formed, which is why we suggest starting logic study in 3rd or 4th grade! Take a look at our suggested logic course of study (by grade and level), which also prepares students well for an upper-school study of rhetoric.

Reasoning & Reading
by Joanne Carlisle—Grades 3–6The Reasoning & Reading workbooks develop basic language and thinking skills that build the foundation for reading comprehension. Exercises reinforce reading as a critical reasoning activity by having students practice determining word, sentence, and paragraph meaning and build reasoning skills. Students are encouraged to come up with their own answers in any instance in which there is no single correct answer, or to work collaboratively to see how many different answers satisfy a question. This supplemental resource is best used 1–2 days per week.

An
Introduction to Formal Logic
by Aaron Larsen, DA & Joelle Hodge with Shelly Johnson, PhDThe Discovery of Deduction: An Introduction to Formal Logic will welcome your students into the fascinating realm of formal, deductive logic. This text teaches students how an argument is put together. It pulls back the curtain to show students not only how arguments work, but also how to assess what’s going on in their own minds. The Discovery of Deduction is recommended for students who have studied informal fallacies, such as those taught in The Art of Argument ; however, the text does also stand on its own as an independent study of formal logic.
Full program includes:
The Discovery of Deduction (student edition) This book makes the subject of logic accessible and relevant to logic-stage students, who are at an age when they are beginning to engage with important ideas. This text emphasizes the practical and real-world application of soundly structured deductive logic. Using methods such as Socratic dialogue, ample discussion, and integration of other subjects, the text approaches formal logic in an ideal way for dialectic students. Starting with a short history of Aristotelian logic, students then learn how to translate arguments from ordinary, conversational, or written narratives into categorical form. Students build on those skills as they study how to construct syllogisms and test them for validity. As a part of this process, they study the square of opposition and relationships of equivalence, learning how to make valid propositional inferences and analyze syllogisms.
The Discovery of Deduction Teacher’s Edition This edition features the entire student text, along with an answer key, teaching tips, sample essays, dialogues, and arguments.
The Discovery of Deduction Video In these chapter-by-chapter lessons, instructor Joelle Hodge, coauthor of the text, explains the concepts of formal logic, providing a variety of examples and applications along with plenty of visual aids to help students master the content. Students will also learn to avoid the common mistakes and pitfalls often made when trying to tackle this challenging subject on their own.

The authors are clearly knowledgeable and actively demonstrate the styles of writing and speaking they are teaching. The material is approachable for all kinds of students and teachers without compromising on quality or sufficient rigor.
Rhetoric
“It is not enough to win the argument—we must win the person.”
Guided by engaging texts on rhetorical theory, practice, and thesis written at their level, students will not only become accustomed to examining evidence and defending a position, but they will also learn how to present topics with deeper understanding. These rhetorical skills will benefit students far beyond the classroom as they go on to become leaders in their fields and take a stand on what’s important.

Rhetoric Alive! Book 1: The Principles of Persuasion
by Alyssan Barnes, PhDFinally, a rhetoric textbook especially well suited for today’s high school student! In order to defend the true, promote the good, and reveal the beautiful, we must do more than merely teach good content and clear thinking. We must also persuade.
Rhetoric Alive! Book 1 explores the principles of winsome speech as developed in the foremost text on persuasion: Aristotle’s Rhetoric. The 15 chapters of Rhetoric Alive! step through the essential components of persuasion—the 3 appeals, the 3 types of speech, and the 5 canons. Each chapter includes an exemplary classic text for analysis and discussion, from Pericles’s “Funeral Oration” to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” Students also have plenty of practice developing their own rhetorical skill through the weekly workshops, imitation assignments, and oratory presentations.

Ethos (speaker’s credibility)
Pathos (audience’s emotion)
Logos (argument’s reasoning)
Three types of speech

Rhetoric Alive! Book 1: Principles of Persuasion is written by Alyssan Barnes, who holds a PhD in rhetoric. An experienced rhetoric teacher from Live Oak Classical School in Texas, Dr. Barnes takes the wisdom of the ancients and makes it accessible to students of the third “trivium art.” If you have only one text on your shelf for teaching the art of persuasion, Rhetoric Alive! Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis
by Alyssan Barnes, PhDThe senior thesis is a capstone project, the crowning achievement in a student’s academic journey. In completing the thesis, students bring all that they’ve learned—reading, writing, and arguing—to bear on one issue. They learn the background of the topic, analyze other people’s arguments, and synthesize their findings and discoveries, putting it all together to form a true, good, and beautiful whole. Through the use of workshops, assignments, and presentation practices, the Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis workbook walks students step by step through the process of writing and then delivering a thesis. Students will gradually draft the 6 parts of the thesis—introduction (exordium), statement of facts (narratio), thesis statement (partitio), argument (confirmatio), counterargument (refutatio), and conclusion (peroratio)—as they are taken through the thesis process from start to finish, from choosing a topic to crafting a snappy title, and everything in between.
Versatile and straightforward, this text can be used by students who are only writing a thesis paper, only delivering a spoken address, or doing both.
Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis is an all-in-one resource—journal/scratch pad/research notebook and rough-draft-to-final-copy writing guide—that will equip students to create a strong, compelling, and well-crafted senior thesis.

*Sayers was not technically a member of the Inklings literary group, but rather was a close associate of Lewis and Williams, and her work shares the same concerns. Thus, we have included her in this series, considering her an Inkling “in spirit.”
The Man Born to Be King
Classical Academic Press is pleased to bring Dorothy Sayers’s masterpiece The Man Born to Be King back into print. In this 12-play cycle, Sayers dramatizes her conviction that God is both the victim and the hero of this classic work of art, and what He does in it is perpetually surprising. C.S. Lewis read this book each year during Lent.

Christine Perrin, MFAMORE LANGUAGES
Children have a natural desire to learn and to experience the world around them. Numerous studies have shown that children are uniquely suited to studying foreign languages because such study capitalizes on their inquisitive nature, providing them with an opportunity to explore methods of communication, decipher thought, and connect with others.
Classical Academic Press was founded on the idea that study of the Latin language is an essential element of a classical education. We have since taken the pedagogy and structure of our flagship series, Song School Latin and Latin for Children, and applied them to our Spanish, French, and Greek programs.*
We know that a key component of learning a foreign language is the distinction between learning common words and phrases and understanding the mechanics of the language well enough to communicate fluently and accurately. Designed both classically and creatively, CAP’s texts foster a love of foreign language in students as young as 1st grade through vocabulary and song. For older students, the texts build up to achievable challenges in grammatical instruction, immersion-style dialogues, and basic translation, creating a solid foundation to correctly speak and understand the language.
*See pages 12–28 for our Latin courses and pages 80–88 for our other foreign-language offerings.
“
I have been a CAP customer for over 7 years. In our homeschooling journey, my daughter has used Song School Latin Books 1–2 and Latin for Children Primers A–C, and this year she will start using Latin Alive! Book 1. We have used Spanish for Children Primers A–B as well, and I was so impressed with the material that now I use it with my students at a private school in Arizona. My first language is Spanish, and I thought the material was well organized and challenging.”

Bible
Students who study the Bible with Song School Bible: Old Testament and the God’s Great Covenant series will learn and understand Scripture in a systematic and meaningful way. The Bible tells us God’s story. It has many parts, but from beginning to end, it is one story with a promise throughout: “I will be your God, and you will be My people.” Through this story, we learn who God is, who mankind is, how the world came to be, and how God worked through history to bring redemption to His people. The God’s Great Covenant series narrates this story for your student in an engaging and unique way.
“God’s Great Covenant is the best Bible curriculum I’ve found in my 14 years of homeschooling. It provides a thorough understanding of the Bible, gives a solid foundation of theology in an easily digestible way, is adaptable for multiple ages and flexible to use, isn’t moralistic, and best of all, it continually speaks to the heart and points students (and teachers!) to the gospel and their need for Jesus. The teacher’s guide is a treasure and is really worth buying.”

God’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 Program
by Claire A. Larsen, MAIn God’s Great Covenant New Testament 2: A Bible Course for Children, we follow the book of Acts as the gospel spreads from Jerusalem, into all of Judea, to the territory of Samaria, and finally into the whole world. It’s a story of adventure, misfortune, mighty miracles, and God’s marvelous grace.
Full program includes:
God’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 (student edition) Following the same chapter formats as GGCNT1, God’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 teaches children in 4th grade and up how God completed His covenant promise to Abraham that “all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:3). The textbook has 5 units: An introductory unit that gives the purpose of the book of Acts, short biographies of Acts’ leading men (Luke, Peter, and Paul), and a description of the New Testament world precedes 4 units that trace the gospel’s spread into the world. The book of Acts continues the story of Jesus’s ministry through the acts of His apostles. It is the bridge that connects the Gospels, which tell the story of Jesus’s ministry, to the Epistles, which explain and apply the gospel story. Though the Epistles are not studied in detail, this text has chapters on the nature of Paul’s letters, problems in the early churches, and a concise description of Paul’s theology. The book of Acts is the culmination of a beautiful redemption story that began many, many years ago in the Garden of Eden. It is not only a page-turning adventure story but also a testament to the faithfulness of our God, who makes promises to His people and keeps them.
God’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 Teacher’s Edition This edition contains a full copy of the student text, and also provides an answer key and extensive teacher’s notes with additional factual information to expand upon the historical, geographical, cultural, and theological concepts introduced in the text.

SCIENCE
Inscience instruction today, challenges abound, from determining correct teaching methods to deciding how best to ensure students’ retention of content beyond the course. These challenges are compelling thoughtful science educators to continually ask, “Where do we start?” In the search for a program taught from a godly perspective that will improve science education and increase student achievement, Novare Science stands as the solution!
Novare Science founder and author John D. Mays based his 7th–12th grade curriculum on the core principles of mastery, integration, and kingdom perspective, 3 areas of focus that are evident in each of Novare’s middle and high school textbooks. The content is carefully selected, presented, and assessed cumulatively so that students can truly master the entire body of material in a standard academic year. Integrative instruction avoids isolating science, and instead draws connections to other subjects such as math, writing, and history. The kingdom perspective that is present in each text helps students to see the fingerprints of God in creation and the world around us. (For more on each of the core principles, see page 106.)
The tone, style, and graphics in each Novare text are age-appropriate, coherent, and engaging, designed to draw students upward toward the adult world of scientific inquiry and study. Combining the 3 core principles with rich, appealing design results in the deeper learning of less material and, ultimately, in a superior science education that faithfully affirms God’s creative design of the universe and His intimate, ongoing involvement with His creation.

Life Science
by Tracy CreekLife Science, by Tracy Creek, is the text for a year-long course designed for 6th grade. The mathematics in Life Science is minimal, making the text a good fit for 6th grade, but it may also be used successfully in grades 7 or 8.
The study of biology has changed substantially in the twenty-first century. Fifty years ago, texts in the life sciences focused primarily on the structures and features of different types of organisms. Today, however, much of current technology and news is about cellular and molecular biology, and thus a life science text that is relevant for today’s students must contain a balance of content addressing important large-scale topics and key micro-scale topics, treated at an appropriate level.
Novare Life Science maintains exactly this balance. Large-scale topics include human organ systems, animal and plant reproduction, and inheritance of traits. Micro-scale topics include cellular respiration, photosynthesis, mitosis, meiosis, and sensory systems. Additionally, there are four crucial chapters treating the energy, populations, nutrient cycles, and biomes of ecosystems. The two final chapters provide an introduction to evolutionary theory and a fascinating description of how mutations in DNA lead to genetic variation.
The laboratory component of our Life Science program is supported by The Apprentice’s Companion for Life Science. This is a manual of 26 activities, accompanied by fun poems, literary references, historical features, and pages for sketching, graphing, and recording data.
The Digital Resources download includes quizzes, exams, review guides, answer keys, and a sample course schedule.

A New Alternative for Science Education
Most students tend to adopt a futile learning method called the Cram-Pass-Forget cycle, in which they cram for tests, pass them, and then soon forget most of what they learned. Success in such an environment revolves around jumping through hoops, not genuine learning. By contrast, Novare texts incorporate methods and curriculum materials designed to promote a Learn-Master-Retain cycle. This approach involves adopting a reduced-scope curriculum with continuous review and ongoing accountability for retention. Instead of isolating science content from everything else, critical points of effective integration are developed, such as highlighting shared skills found in both science and math, history, and language. Last, students are encouraged to think and talk about the relationship between science/mathematics and the loving Creator who not only made everything, but gave creation to us as an amazing gift. Novare helps students to see the fingerprints of God as they grow in their understanding of our endlessly fascinating and mysterious world.

—Jocelyn (Pennsylvania)The Black Intellectual Tradition
by Angel Adams Parham, PhD, and Anika Prather, PhDGreat books have always offered the capacity to free us, to restore to us our humanity, and to ground us in our particular places. In The Black Intellectual Tradition, Dr. Parham and Dr. Prather invite us into the stories of how for more than a century the classics were loved and applied by a host of Black teachers, students, authors, and activists. In a nation increasingly given to division and to the shallow distractions of consumerism that leave us uprooted and isolated, our schools and homes stand in great need of this forgotten American tradition with its wealth of teachers who suffered long and who have visions to share from within the wisdom of our common past.
Enjoy selections from The Black Intellectual Tradition, releasing this summer:
Some may concede, “Well, certainly Black writers have much to add to the conversation, but our curriculum is already rather full. We have a long list of classic and canonical writings to get through and adding a significant number of Black writers who have not traditionally been considered classic or canonical takes us away from our purpose.” I will admit that if the main goal is to get through a list of books, then this argument has merit. But if, on the other hand, the commitment is not to a list, but rather to providing an education rich in truth, goodness, and beauty, then we must take seriously the argument that Black writers are essential to an education that cultivates these qualities. The book list and the transcendentals are not necessarily in competition. Rather than allowing our teaching to be enslaved to a preexisting list, we can read traditional Western texts in conversation with great writings by diverse authors who help us to understand dimensions of truth, goodness, and beauty that we simply cannot access without drawing on their unique experiences and ways of being in and seeing the world. In this sense, the writings of Black intellectuals are an essential
Classical studies has historically cultivated something of an elitist environment, but looking at the life and example of Anna Julia Cooper, we see another way of presenting classical studies. Classical education is given as part of the nurturing and love shown to those she taught. In her class, each student, young or old, never felt that they were inferior. She made all students feel that classical education was for and about them and that they were welcome to the space. Her influence was so strong that most of her students grew up to come back and teach alongside her. Anna beckons for the classical educator to be humble and to have a heart of service, bringing the lifeline of classical education to underserved populations.
Classical education, as an act of service and affirmation and as a lifeline, takes a body of knowledge that at one time was thought to present an elitist realm in society, and presents it instead as something much more humane. This rethinking of classical studies was actually pioneered by the enslaved people in the way that they used the works of the canon to find hope, wisdom, and light during their enslavement.

The Age of Martha: A Call to Contemplative Learning in a Frenzied Culture
by Devin O’DonnellT.S. Eliot characterizes modern life as having “neither plentitude nor vacancy,” and goes on to say that our lives are “distracted from distraction by distraction.” We have grown so used to our distractions that we have nearly forgotten what leisure is, that divine and gratuitous part of human existence that ennobles life and causes us to pause and reflect, pray and praise. This is why the Scriptures give us the story of Mary and Martha. We can be like Mary, who chose to be still and present for the most important thing. Or we can be like Martha, who chose instead to worry about earthly things and was admonished for her unwillingness to rest. In this work, O’Donnell challenges us to return to seeing leisure as a guiding light in our education efforts.

A New Natural Philosophy: Recovering a Natural Science and Christian Pedagogy
by Ravi Scott Jain, Robbie Andreasen, and Chris HallAristotle said that philosophy (the love of wisdom) always begins in wonder— wonder that often is kindled as we gaze upon the astonishing world around us. Yet today our science classes too often neglect the wonder evoked by the natural world and instead occlude and stifle it. How, then, can our science classes reconnect wonder to nature, wonder that will lead to wisdom, work, and worship? This book seeks to answer that question by helping recover the “natural” in natural science, the wisdom in “philosophy,” and the worship that flows from wonder.

The Lost Seeds of Learning: Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric as Life-Giving Arts
by Phillip J. Donnelly, PhDThe verbal arts of grammar, logic, and rhetoric are often referred to as tools of learning. But this analogy between words and tools too often relies on the common assumption that the verbal arts are merely neutral tools, their purpose assigned arbitrarily by humans. Rather than tools, words are like seeds whose purpose is life-giving.The Lost Seeds of Learning invites readers to consider how our understanding of the learners, the teachers, the content, the forms, and the purposes of the verbal arts becomes transformed in light of Christian faith.

Echoes of Eternity: A Classical Guide to Music
by Stephen R. Turley, PhDRecovering the lost tools of learning is one thing, but getting students to love classical music is another. What precisely is a classical view of music? And in a popsaturated culture, how do we as educators not only effectively communicate such a view to our students, but also foster in them a love for what they hear? This book contains a rich tapestry of concepts, vocabulary, and listening examples that will equip you to teach and awaken students to the splendor of a classical vision of music. In this book, which is written for both musicians and nonmusicians alike, you will discover a profound theology of music and music practice, learn how to explain the objective value of music, and be introduced to ways in which music can be incorporated throughout a school day.

Common Arts Education: Renewing the Classical Tradition of Training the Hands, Head, and Heart
by Christopher Hall, MATThe liberal arts—the trivium and quadrivium—represent the core, the academic foundations, of a classical education. And yet, they alone cannot meet our basic needs, for we must eat, heal, defend ourselves, trade, build, find our way around, and more. It is these common arts that provide the experiences in real application that will allow students to become not only fully functional in their knowledge, but fully charitable in the world. In this book, author Chris Hall outlines a vision for the resonance between the liberal, fine, and common arts, supplies concrete steps that teachers can take to implement a common arts curriculum, and provides a series of experiences to try in any classroom, at any grade level.

The Black Intellectual Tradition
by Angel Adams Parham, PhD, and Anika Prather, PhDThe powerful legacy of classical education among Black intellectuals and teachers in America is a national treasure with the capacity to bless teachers and students the world over. Dr. Angel Parham and Dr. Anika Prather introduce us to readers, writers, teachers, artists, and people of action who loved, taught, and put into practice the wisdom and virtue of the great voices who came before. These Black educators and intellectuals, while living with the injustices and hardships that gave them unique insights, mined the tradition, weaving it together with their African and African American heritage to create a new narrative that would aid all people in understanding injustice and was thus integral to the fight for liberation and equality. This book restores stories and experiences to us that will inform and inspire ideas for action and application within all classical schools and homeschools. Dr. Parham and Dr. Prather bring to the book two different scholarly perspectives and voices as well as their own personal experiences as classical educators, parents, and organizational leaders.

Making School Beautiful: Restoring the Harmony of Place
by John Skillen, PhDThe rapid growth of the classical Christian education movement means that hundreds of recently established schools enjoy a basic solidarity of purpose. They can also seize the opportunity to think together about how the architecture and design of their schools can best suit their identity and location. In Making School Beautiful, Dr. Skillen draws out principles of campus design from the very liberal arts—rhetoric in particular—that shape our curriculum. From the campus layout to thoughtful design of rooms, buildings, and selected art, students and teachers can foster a love of learning, a care for their neighbors, and a desire for God. This book is accompanied by a supplemental webpage that provides full-color images of the works of art referenced in the text.

That’s a Fallacy!
A Parent’s Guide to Logical Argument
by Christopher Perrin, PhD and Joelle Hodge, MATEveryone makes arguments—arguments from the mundane to the profound, arguments for what dessert to order, what car to buy, or what president to vote for— but we don’t always argue well. In fact, often we quarrel rather than argue and we are also prone to being persuaded by faulty and deceptive arguments.
That’s a Fallacy! presents 28 logical fallacies—the most common ways that arguments go wrong and become deceptive. It features multiple examples of how each fallacy works, including dialogues that present logical fallacies in culture, politics, school, and home life. Various fake advertisements throughout the book exemplify many of the fallacies.
That’s a Fallacy! is an ideal book for those wishing to protect themselves from propaganda of all types and to argue well with cogency and clarity . . . and without fallacies.
The Festive School
by Fr. Nathan CarrIn The Festive School, Father Nathan Carr draws on his experience as a teacher, headmaster, and priest as he offers a series of wise, joyful reflections on the importance of festivity in Christian education. He makes an important distinction between the kind of quick, sugary fun, entertainment, and novelty that today’s popular culture so values, and the kind of deep and enriching festivity that will be substantial enough to satisfy our students. True joy cannot be found in a moment of novel entertainment, but rather in a way of life that is organized around prayer, worship, love, and relationship.

Charlotte Mason: A Liberal Education for All
by Jason BarneyA devoted Christian and avid proponent of liberal education, Charlotte Mason developed a philosophy that became an international movement of parents and schools to reform education.
In this book, Jason Barney situates Charlotte Mason’s educational thought and practices within the context of her life and influences. He then explores Mason’s philosophy of education under the main principles that she espoused in her writings: children are born persons; education is an atmosphere, a discipline, and a life; and education is the science of relations. Readers will see that, in dialogue with the past as well as the present, Charlotte Mason stands as one of the giants in the history of education.
The Enchanted Cosmos: Mathematics and the Logos Who Is Love
by Ravi Scott JainIn The Enchanted Cosmos, Ravi Scott Jain explores how the study of mathematics should be formative and participatory: Students should grow in wonder and judgment as much as in skill and should experience reality through mathematics, not simply work problems. Without discounting mathematical progress, Jain demonstrates how ancient and medieval perspectives can lead to an enriched pedagogy. Through a variety of puzzles, proofs, and other resources, The Enchanted Cosmos details practical approaches to multiple levels of mathematics, from higher arithmetic through calculus. The curriculum of wonder it outlines culminates in wisdom and worship as students discover the cosmos as enchanted—as woven together with a harmony, or a musical logos, that is amenable to numerical description.
