Hortenzia

Dress

Spring/ Summer 2014

I created this illustration before the final dress was sewn, which does not include the back cut-out. I eliminated that element because it was too youthful for Plum’s target market.

Inspired by the Plum woman with a love for life and dressing up. - flouncy, flirty skirt with wrap detail - bold print, on trend - pockets To wear to weddings, daytime and evening events such as barbeques and wine tasting.

This dress was designed for Plum’s distinct target market of women ages 45-60, with the store’s younger clientele in mind. The silhouette suits every body shape, while the vibrant pattern suits every skin tone. The curved darting creates soft lines and distributed fit. A two-page storyboard was used to present the design, as a buyer, to Plum’s owner and designer.

Trapunto

This double-breasted, lined wool jacket was designed in 2014. It features a trapunto collar with cording outlining the edges, bound buttonholes with gunmental buttons, and six pockets: two patch, two doublejetted, and two small, interior doublejetted pockets. The jacket also has a chain loop between the top collar and back facing to hang over hooks. This design was featured in a Kwantlen window display.

Lululemon Lab is a niche store that combines the practicality of commercial Lululemon activewear with the typical Vancouver lifestyle. The brand designs clothing that can be used for work, travel, commuting and yoga, while maintaining style and wearability. This tank top designed in 2014 lives up to the Lab’s design standards while featuring a fitted and draped silhouette for women who like to express their femininity.

I opened my Etsy shop in 2010 in hopes of getting my headband designs out there, and to learn what it is like to build a small business. So far it has been a valuable learning experience that I have been able to apply to business and fashion projects at school. I make unique beauty accessories that are meant to be comforting and encouraging of self love and acceptance for girls and women. Studying the fashion industry, I often come across attitudes and visuals that provoke bad body image for girls and women. I also try to use mostly natural materials such as cotton and silk. I hope to be part of the change for a healthier fashion industry with more values.

I learned how to make sales on Etsy by reading Etsy newsletters and blog posts, and conversing with the community in Etsy Team threads. The photoshoots are styled by myself, an old friend of mine from high school who is a photographer takes the photos and my models include my sister and old childhood friends. I recently changed the name from Claudia Maria’s to by Claudia Maria, and updated the branding for a new, classic feel.

Oblahk is a Canadian clothing brand based in Vancouver, BC. We opened our first location in Vancouver in 2007, and since then branched out with eight more store across Canada. We are still expanding to be more accessible to mothers across Canada. Oblahk is dedicated to providing mothers of all figures and stages with the clothing they need. We believe in simplicity and quality over quantity. Our design philosophy is:

structure + ease = balance,

because it’s important to feel chic, comfortable, defined and effortless at the same time. Our mission is to make you feel good in your shape. The modern mom is dedicated to her family and doesn’t have much time for shopping. She has a budget that is mostly reserved for the home and well being of the family. Our store is a one-stop-shop of solutions for mommy and her little ones. We offer a variety of comfortable and functional clothing for different occasions and different stages of motherhood. Our ranges for children and baby include basics as well as some clothing that matches the womenswear ranges by colour, pattern, and style.

Accountability and

Sustainable Practices

Quality: Quality is the most important to us when it comes to making clothes. We use natural fibre blends for clothing that is healthy for the body as well as breathable, comfortable, has longevity, and is easy to care for. We use organic fibres as often as we can, and source recycled and rare organic materials for limited edition items, available first on Instagram.

Fair Trade: We are aware of our social responsibily in the apparel industry and source quality, fair trade manufacturing. Our knitwear is sourced in rural Peru, where high quality knitting has been a tradition for generations. We get our organic cotton from ethically-focused Tanzania and also have manufacuring there. India is another of our manufacturing sources. Each artisan creates clothing in a healthy and safe working environment, and is able to support their family and afford education, food, healthcare, and housing. When you purchase from Oblahk you can feel confident that you are supporting hard-working individuls and an ethical business.

Environment:

Oblahk is certified by Fair Trade Canada.

As a company we are eco-conscious and working with our Sustainability Team to gain more environment-preserving practicies. Currently, we use natural dyes when we can, use as little fabric as we can, and print digitally to reduce water, energy, and textile waste. We use solar power at each store location and reusable boxes for shipping goods throughout Canada. We also try to only use things that can be reused, recycled, or biodegradable. For example, all of our paperwork, clothing tags, and even pens are made from recycled paper. Our shopping bags are reusable and made from recycled PET plastic bottles. Watch this video to learn how to care for your clothing to prevent waste and to preserve the environment:

We were inspired by the charming, dated look of cathedrals, with worn stone, cracking columns and greenery growing along the walls. the shades have a holiday feel but are classic and wearable (cream, dark brown) and fashionable (maroon, green). the print was inspired by french rose windows and the marble of a typical gothic cathedral.
