CELEBRATING
THE PAST BUILDING THE
FUTURE ANNUAL
REPORT 2014-15
A changing of the guard brings about two very different things — reminiscing and looking ahead. When Dr. Judy Wellington passed the torch to new President & CEO Al Najjar earlier this year, the Clay Center found itself in that place of sweet remembrance and eager excitement. As we look back on the many successes of the past year — and the people and programs that have made the Clay Center so special — anticipation builds as new programs and ideas bring about new opportunities to make an impact on the region. Thank you for being part of it all. Kyle Mork Chairman of the Board
The torch was passed when Dr. Judy Wellington welcomed Al Najjar as new President and CEO in February 2015.
“When I first learned about the Clay Center, I couldn’t believe this place actually existed. All of my passions under one roof? This is too good to be true!” Al Najjar, Clay Center President & CEO
The Collectors Club has been an important source of funding for art education since they began purchasing works of art to add to the permanent collection at Sunrise Museum in 1986. This devoted group of donors stepped out and tried something new this year when, for the first time, they selected an artist to create an exhibit for the Clay Center.
ART EDUCATION Los Angeles-based artist Mark Licari was selected to develop an original exhibit and educational programming, and he delivered in a big way! In addition to bringing an amazing exhibit of prints, drawings and sculptures, he led students in art workshops, families in the creation of a mural in the cafĂŠ and a local college student in teaching middle schoolers how to create their own works of art. Plus, he added a beautiful mural to the stairway leading to the art gallery, making a lasting impact on the experience of every Clay Center visitor.
10,174 people of all ages explored art and science through hands-on workshops and fascinating lectures
Iconic rock band Heart packed the hall for one of the quickest sell-outs in Clay Center history.
As the Clay Center Presents performance series continues its longtime success with legendary hitmakers, high-profile comedy acts and stellar cultural events, a brand new concert experience was introduced this year to serve untapped audiences. The Sound Check Sessions performance series brought in up-and-coming local and

national artists, giving the community an opportunity to hear new music from rising stars. This unique series includes seating, drinks and dancing on the Clay Center stage, drawing a new generation of music lovers into an intimate atmosphere in the state’s premier performance venue.
The inaugural season of the Sound Check Sessions performance series brought 1,000 people onto the stage.
8,113 students and teachers enjoyed daytime theatre performances 37,827 attendees enjoyed music, comedy and theatre performances

EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH
The Clay Center’s longtime music outreach program, Clay Community Arts, expanded this year to provide free instruments and music lessons to more local schools and communities. Students in two additional counties – Boone and Cabell – along with Kanawha County’s Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary School launched Clay Community Arts programs this past school year.
But outreach didn’t stop anywhere close to home. Students from Mason County’s Wahama High School traveled all the way to Romania to study music, culture and history as part of the Clay Center’s Museums Connect program, made possible by a grant from the U.S. State Department. Plus, a group of Romanian students visited the Clay Center, Wahama High and other wonderful West Virginia locations as part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
MUSEUM RENEWAL Museum upgrades began this year when the Digital Dome was equipped with state-of-the-art planetarium technology that provides for customizable, student-driven programming never before offered at the Clay Center. This effort continues as plans are underway to revitalize the museum with contemporary exhibits, audience-focused programming and an enhanced visitor experience.
21,718 adventurers traveled the globe and galaxy in the Digital Dome 52,908 kids and kids at heart learned through play in the museum
