Bass tactics for walleyes and crappies By Bob Jensen, Fishing the Midwest My friend Mike Frisch and I went fishing on Clear Lake. I get to fish Clear Lake several times every year, and Mike visited Clear Lake a lot in the early ’90s. Clear Lake was a good body of water then, but it’s an outstanding fishery now. In fact, Clear Lake is one of the premier multi-specie fisheries in the midwest. On our most recent trip to Clear Lake, we fished with Kevan Paul, a successful angler and a good guide. He not only takes his clients fishing, he explains what they’re doing. When Mike, Kevan and I hit the water on Clear Lake, we did some interesting things to catch the fish — and boy did we catch fish. We had all the traditional walleye gear: jigs, rigs, spinners, crankbaits and slipbobbers. We started off with the slipbobbers and caught several nice walleyes in a short period of time. Then the action slowed and we changed techniques. The wind was from the south, so we headed

to the north shoreline. On most bodies of water, walleyes like the wind. The technique we employed, however, was one that Mike and I were very familiar with for largemouth bass, but not for walleyes. We tied one-sixteenth of an ounce round head Fire-Ball jigs and one-eighth of an ounce stand-up Fire-Balls onto our line and tipped them with either a minnow or leech. Both worked equally well. And then we started making short casts to the docks. If we had been pitching the jigs to rock piles or weed beds, that would have been normal walleye fishing, but we were throwing our jigs under docks and around boat lifts, much like we do when we’re bass fishing. And we were catching walleyes consistently. Doubles were frequent. This was fun, productive, and it’s a technique that Mike and I will remember when we encounter similar conditions on other bodies of water. Destination Clear Lake 2017

Sleds get ready to launch at the Yellow Bass Bonanza. Photo by Kevan Paul. Kevan then asked if we would like to catch some crappies, and we said “yes.” I noticed when we loaded the boat in the morning that Kevan had put some telescoping rods in the boat, but I hadn’t paid much attention. When Kevan said those were the rods we would be using for crappies, I paid attention. They were Cabela’s rods that telescoped out to 16 feet and they had about 24 inches of line tied to the tip. A small Fire-fly jig was tied to the end of the line. We moved into an expansive bed of rushes and started dropping the jig into small openings in the vegetation. Again, Mike and I have employed this technique with other styles of rods for largemouth bass many, many times in the past few years. On this day though, we caught crappies and big bluegills. We simply swung our jig into an opening in the weeds and let it quiver just below the surface. We let it hang there for three or four seconds, then swung it into a new spot. We saw almost every crappie that

hit. They weren’t all big, but they were all fun to catch on a short line in heavy cover. Our day on Clear Lake was a big success. We caught a lot of fish, found out that old techniques will work for new species of fish and had a good time, which is why we go fishing. Bob Jensen was introduced to the sport of fishing as a toddler and has been an active angler since. He is the host and executive producer of the award-winning Fishing the Midwest television series. His feature magazine articles have appeared in the In-Fisherman, Fishing Facts, and numerous other magazines. Bob was recently selected for 2017 induction to the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame.

Camp Clear Lake The yurt experience
yurt noun \’yürt\ Definition: a circular domed tent stretched over a collapsible lattice framework originated by pastoral peoples of inner Asia.

In each yurt, you’ll find a bunk bed and futon, plus a table and chairs. The yurts have a vinyl roof with a clear dome. There is an overhead fan and windows to let in a breeze. Outside, each yurt has a patio, a couple of picnic tables, a charcoal grill and a wood fire pit.
McIntosh Woods State Park is a 60-acre park, so it is easy to explore in an afternoon. Since my children love the lake, we went to the small, sandy, unsupervised beach. They played near the shore, dug in the sand and kicked a beach ball around. The sand there is more like gravel, but the kids still attempted to build sand castles.
Playground
Like cabin-tent hybrids, the two yurts at McIntosh Woods State Park have electricity and a solid floor but no indoor plumbing or air-conditioning. They’re the only yurts in the Iowa parks system, so they’re pretty unique.
My family stayed a summer night in one of the yurts. We loved the location, which was just steps away from the beautiful lake. Having spent a night yurting — I’m sure that’s a word — I realized that a yurt is a step above “roughing it” (sleeping on the ground), but still keeps families feeling close to nature. It was the best of both worlds, in my opinion.
Shelter/Lodge
Tell that friend what a yurt is, though, and they’ll be as intrigued by the idea as you are. A yurt is basically a round tent, but it’s more like a cabin than a flimsy pop-up. It’s exotic enough to appeal to most outdoorsy and adventurous types.
A modern bathroom is a short walk from the yurts, and if you’re prone to sweating or plan on taking a dip in the lake, you’ll be happy to know there is a shower there as well. You share the bathroom with whoever is staying in the other yurt.
Campsites
Few Midwesterners know what a yurt is. Tell the next friend you see that you’ll be staying in a yurt on your next vacation to Clear Lake, and you’ll likely get a strange look.

Tips for staying in a yurt Photo by Kim Reiner The beach is a short bike ride or a long walk on a paved road from the yurts, as is the McIntosh Woods playground. If traveling with young children, both will be a hit. The park is one of the major boating access points to the lake, so you’re in luck if you have a boat. Fishing is also popular there, and the short pier by the yurts could make for a nice fishing spot if you don’t have a boat. McIntosh Woods was a peaceful place to visit, and as it turns out, the yurt was a comfortable lodging choice. We lucked out with unseasonably cool temperatures at night. Knowing that it could easily be much hotter on our next visit, my family will be back for another summer adventure in a yurt. The lake is calling.
• Bring your own bedding – and don’t forget pillows. • Bring your usual camping supplies. If you’re making any meals during your stay, you’ll need to bring all of your cooking supplies in addition to the ingredients. Don’t forget to bring paper towels or wet naps, especially if you have kids. • Bring towels, both for showering and if you’re visiting the lake. • Pack a shower caddy to easily carry bathroom and shower supplies. • Wear water shoes or sturdy sandals if you plan on entering the water. • Clean up after yourself. There is a broom in the yurt, which was a good reminder to tidy up before leaving. • Our family of four slept comfortably in one yurt. Consider renting the second yurt if your group is larger.

Natural Beauty By Kerri Sorrell, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation The Nature Conservancy’s Clausen’s Cove — In January 2008, Max Clausen of Clear Lake donated his 249 acres of land — including undeveloped lake shoreline, oak savannas and farmland — to The Nature Conservancy to protect Clear Lake’s water quality and resources while preserving the scenic open space for the community. The Nature Conservancy permits passive use of the property including anchoring boats, swimming, hiking, bird watching, natural resource interpretation, environmental education, scientific research and scenic enjoyment. There will be a staged restoration of the agricultural farmland to native plant communities. Woodford-Ashland Lone Tree Point Nature Area and Sisters’ Prairie — This privately owned area includes a total of 291 acres of woodlands, wetlands, restored prairie and a mile of wild and scenic shoreline. The Nature Area provides habitat for bald eagles, owls, herons, wild turkeys, whitetail deer, red fox and a plethora of birds. Wildflowers carpet the woodlands in the spring. Owners are restoring an oak savanna on the west side of the property. The owners placed conservation easements on the properties to ensure they can never be developed. In 1992, the family donated the easement for the nature area to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. Owners continue to maintain and manage the area, and it remains on the tax rolls, but public access is allowed for non-consumptive uses such as bird watching, hiking, cross country skiing, wildlife observation and photography. Visitors are asked to take litter with them, stay on footpaths and observe prohibited uses of campfires, hunting/trapping and motorized vehicles so the natural integrity of the area will be maintained. In 2003, work began on the Sisters’ Prairie restoration project of over 190 acres. The wetlands and prairie habitat

have a significant impact on lake water quality by filtering nutrients and sedimentation from surrounding farmland. It also provides excellent wildlife habitat. The family worked with the Cerro Gordo County office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service to ensure permanent protection as a Wetland Restoration Project. The family donated an easement to the Cerro Gordo County Conservation Board for a 1.1-mile bike trail, which meanders through the prairie. The farm and the prairie continue to be privately owned, so bicyclists and hikers are asked to stay on the trail. Cerro Gordo Wind Farm — 10586 Balsam Ave. An educational kiosk explains how wind is harvested as a sustainable energy source in north Iowa. Hoffman Prairie — At the intersection of Balsam Avenue and Highway 18 (north of the McIntosh Wildlife Area). The 37-acre example of a wet, tallgrass prairie is dotted with beautiful wildflowers in the spring and home to 150 plant species and rare butterflies. The Nature Conservancy purchased it from Larry Hoffman in 1985 and it was dedicated as a biological and geological preserve in 1986. Clear Lake Area Outdoor Classroom — 901 S. Fourth St. People of all ages can enjoy this accessible 2.5-acre learning center adjacent to Clear Creek Elementary School. Pathways lead through prairie, woodlands and wetland areas. Here is the place to view the majestic trumpeter swans in the spring, summer and autumn. Birdhouses, bat and butterfly houses add to the attractions as well as a hibernaculum for reptiles. Ventura Cove — One of the last undeveloped lake shorelines and 26 acres of woodlands and wetlands was preserved in July 2006, thanks to a partnership between private and public donors, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. A massive cleanup was done by volunteers and the cities of Clear Lake and Ventura and CL Tel. The INHF provided an easement to the Cerro Gordo Recreational Trails Association which raised money to construct a scenic bike trail through the woodlands. After the $1.7 million was raised, the property was transferred to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Wild turkeys, bald eagles and deer can often be seen here.

Woodford Island — Scenic Woodford Island is a 3-acre island managed primarily for wildlife habitat and is an excellent spot for fishing. Bluebill Wildlife Area — A 62-acre parcel purchased from the Iowa Department of Transportation in 2002, this area features a 40-acre “borrow” lake stocked for fishing. Acquisition was financed by a private contribution (Rita and Al Goranson), a grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources “Fish Habitat Stamp program” (35 percent of total cost) and Cerro Gordo County Conservation “REAP” and land acquisition account funds. Located on the east side of Indigo Avenue, southeast of Clear Lake. Lon Whitney Wildlife Sanctuary — Junction of Lee and Bayside, Clear Lake. This unique woodlot was donated by the estate of Lon Whitney and is managed as an urban wildlife area. Winter Garden Park — 1220 N. 16th St. W. A thick layer of peat moss shows this 70-acre area was once a glacial lake-bed, deep beneath the waters of Clear Lake. It is a popular sledding area and provides hikers panoramic views of the Grant Wood-like Iowa landscape to the north. Zirbel Slough — 8447 200th St. This 330-acre example of the prairie marshes that once dotted the country provides habitat for a tremendous variety of waterfowl, wading birds and other wildlife. DNR Aquarium — Iowa Department of Natural Resources, 1203 N. Shore Drive. Get up close and personal with fish from Clear Lake. Open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from mid to late April (depending on the lake ice-out date) until Oct. 15. DNR staff catch the fish for the display each spring and release them before the lake freezes over. Call 357-3517 for more information.

Clear Lake Arts Center By Beth Ann Chiles, It’s Just Life
Located just off Main Avenue’s beaten path, the sculptures and interesting building design of the Clear Lake Arts Center, located on South Fourth Street, is a place that will catch your eye and encourage you to come inside. Visitors of all ages are greeted warmly and invited to wander through the Center and take time to view the amazing artwork and exhibits that change frequently. Step into the Center and the senses are visually stimulated with the unique and interesting displays that are creatively arranged throughout the gallery spaces. Perhaps the best part about the Center is that it is always evolving. The Hanson and Stanton Gallery have rotating exhibits which change every 4-8 weeks, so with each new visit there are fresh and exciting displays and artists to discover. On one occasion, the visit may include viewing collages made by local Opportunity Village clients or perhaps a walk amongst pottery crafted by local potters. Paintings of all varieties are on display year round with different themes, and at times there are displays of textile sculptures, quilts or even pressed flowers. The Anne T. Riley Gallery will host theme-based exhibitions throughout the year, and quilters will delight in discovering the Lake Quilters Guild who will be displaying a different quilt every month in the Winga Library. A favorite trend recently is repurposing ordinary items to be used in art pieces. Recycled art exhibits are always popular events at the Center. It is inspiring to see items that are normally destined to be trash be recycled into fun and whimsical art pieces like quilted headboards, furniture, outdoor décor and wall art. Creativity knows no limits when it comes to art made from vintage items, and the Center is the place that artists who specialize in this type of offering can showcase their talent.
Cornstalk panels hang from the ceiling. Photo by Audrey Kletscher Helbling, Minnesota Prairie Roots. The Clear Lake Arts Center has a full range of classes to offer to all ages from children to adults, and it is a popular spot to spend some time learning how to do a new craft or learn a new skill. Creative Kids Programs are offered year round with plenty of options for area children to join in to help spur on their creativity. Regular weekly programs include an open time for experiences with Painters and Jewelers as well as a Sit and Knit open session. As a hub of the creative community, the Center hosts open studios for several art forms including music, painting, knitting and a networking group for those in creative fields. They also host many special events including Arty Parties, Meet the Artists, plus themed exhibits and activities that align with signature Clear Lake Events throughout the year, in addition to a variety of classes for all age groups. The works of more than 100 area artists are housed in the Clear Lake Arts Center Gift Shop with 2-D and 3-D works — paintings, prints, pottery, mosaics, jewelry, fiber arts, as well as a unique collection of greeting cards, boxed cards, children’s art supplies, books and more. The Blue Horizon Players, a community theater troupe, has been making quite a splash around the Lake since its inception in late 2015. Melodrama, sketch comedy and music are delivered several times a year by a motley crew of more than 30 people. Don’t be surprised if you are pulled into the action. With a motto of “bad theater at its best,” anything can happen. There are two things making Blue Horizon Players unique. First, nearly all material performed is original, as there are several writers among the group. Second, you won’t find a Blue Horizon theater. This is a mobile traveling circus of sorts, basing in and around Clear Lake but also putting the show on the road to surrounding communities. The good news is that you can find a schedule of performances, and their location and the ability to purchase advance tickets at bluehorizonplayers. org. For fans of Halloween, the troupe is becoming known for a huge musical show annually (“The Ded Skullivan Show Presents...”). With four to six large shows per year and mini shows for special entertainment requests available, The Blue Horizon Players gather no moss. Blue Horizon Players Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization and is strictly volunteer. Sponsors are needed, as are people with untapped talent who wish to be paid with applause. For bookings, contact Blue Horizon Players 17746 Eagle Ave., Clear Lake, Iowa 50428. All other information is available at www.bluehorizonplayers.org.

Lake Eats
Local & fresh dominate the food scene in Clear Lake By Jeni Flaa, Jeni Eats
For a town of 8,000 people, Clear Lake’s dining scene might surprise you. The farmers market is vibrant, and a wide variety independent restaurants offer every breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus everything in between. Located minutes from I-35, Clear Lake is also the perfect stop for travelers moving between Iowa and Minnesota. Even though we have since moved from north Iowa, we look back fondly on our visits to Clear Lake and love recommending our favorite food experiences to the many people who still ask us for recommendations. The Landing: Drive (or boat) to Clear Lake’s popular lake-side restaurant for lunch, dinner or a full breakfast and brunch. The menu offers items like burgers, kabobs, and tacos, all served in shiny metal baskets lined with newspaper. The sweet potato fries are some of the best in town. We like to wash it all down with a cold Moscow Mule on weekends as live music plays and the sun sets on the dock.
Half Moon Inn: Inside this simple, low-key building is one of north Iowa’s best, old-school supper clubs. The booths are comfortable, and the inside is dimly lit. We loved how our meals began with a cracker basket, and fresh bread, as well. In true north Iowa-style, Half Moon serves juicy steaks as rare or as well-done as you’d like. We especially enjoyed how the steaks swam in a pool of flavorful marinade.
The Barrel Drive-In: It’s impossible to miss this historic drive-in along U.S. 18. The sight of Cooper the Giant Chicken and a spinning barrel will tell you where to turn. Since 1958, The Barrel’s been serving crispy broasted chicken, salads with Photo by Jeni Eats their famous French dressing, and icy mugs of root beer. When I visit, I like to order all three. Starboard Market: This lunch-only, nautically-themed sandwich shop is famous for good reason. The sandwiches are really, really good. You’ll find classic sandwiches like the Reuben and creative combinations. I like the Regata, which combines smoked turkey, Havarti and mango chutney. Boxed lunches let you add a fresh deli salads and cookie, too. One unique item I really enjoy is their cornbread salad. The restaurant is popular, and seating is limited. If the weather is nice or the seating is full, simply walk one block away and enjoy your meal by the lake. Gluten-free Photo by Starboard Market options are available. Louie’s Custom Meats: Pack a cooler and stop by Louie’s meats. I always appreciated how the butchers behind the counter answered all of my questions and went above and beyond to ensure customers left with the perfect cut. You may even have the honor of speaking with Louie himself. In addition to classic cuts of meats and steaks, you might also find ox tail, ham balls and fresh fish. If you don’t see it, ask. The prices and quality are remarkable. Another unique item worth trying is Louie’s unique, signature brats, with or without casings. We still haven’t found brats quite like Louie’s anywhere in the Midwest.
Jeni is a Midwest enthusiast who recently moved back to the Twin Cities with her husband after moving to three states in the last five years. She loves Iowa ham balls, road trips, and her dog. Find more of her food adventures on her blog at JeniEats.com.

Lady of the Lake Cruising is a labor of love on Clear Lake By Tim & Lisa Trudell, The Walking Tourists Clear Lake’s Lady of the Lake could be nicknamed “The Love Boat.” It seems that the boat has played a role in at least two love stories. As the cruise boat celebrates its 30th year on the lake in 2017, the love story between Lady of the Lake and Clear Lake will continue to grow. Gary and Karen Geist — the original owners of the paddle boat — were married in 1960, the same year the boat was built in Dubuque. The relationship seemed destined. Before becoming Lady of the Lake, the boat served as a ferry near Yankton, South Dakota. It ferried vehicles and people across the Missouri River between South Dakota and Nebraska from 1960 to 1987. The ferry received its second lease on life as a cruise boat when the Geists purchased it in 1985. The boat was the last known paddlewheel ferry in the United States. The Geists named it Sally Ann, but later changed it to one related to the river, said Scott Monson, one of the current owners. The Geists operated the ferry until a new bridge ended the need for ferries.

Lady of the Lake Downtown Seawall | (641) 357-2243 www.cruiseclearlake.com Late May - September. Visit website for cruise schedule and rates. Sit back and enjoy a cruise around Clear Lake and listen as the captain tells enchanting stories and directs you to points of interest. Grab a drink at the cash bar on the lower level and then head upstairs where you can be entranced by the churning paddle wheel down below or look out for miles across the spring-fed lake. Feel the fresh air on your face, sway to the beach tunes on the speaker and relax into the lake lifestyle!
The Geists owned and operated Lady of the Lake until 2004. The boat has seen four sets of owners during its life on Clear Lake. The boat was originally open air, but the Geists enclosed the lower deck in the mid-1990s. The current set of owners have their own love story related to Lady of the Lake. Scott and Niki Monson had their first date on the boat. Scott had been a longtime captain at that point. The Monsons, along with partner Jon Berhow, took over as the boat’s owners in 2015. The Lady of the Lake is a family operation. The couple’s son, Cole, helps as first mate. Scott fits the role of captain quite well and seems at home in the pilot’s seat.
Cruises around Clear Lake run almost daily between Memorial Day and Sept. 30. The 90-minute tour offers guests views of the glacial lake and shoreline attractions, such as a state park lodge built during the Great Depression. Scott tosses in a few anecdotes regarding the city’s history, including stories of how bars operated during Prohibition. The owners plan to celebrate the boat’s 30th anniversary with a series of events. One cruise will involve a throwback to the 1980s, Scott said, because that’s when The Lady of the Lake moved to Clear Lake.
The previous owners — Roger and Dotty Nordman and Mike and Marlene Royer — did a lot to improve the Lady of the Lake, Scott said.
The July 4th fireworks cruise may help make the 30th anniversary even more special. The annual fireworks show on the lake attracts thousands of people. Clear Lake swells from about 7,000 to about 100,000 people over the holiday, so plan accordingly.
“Roger was the best thing to happen to the boat,” Scott said. “He took it to new levels.”
More information on themed and public cruises can be found on the boat’s website at www.cruiseclearlake.com.
Dockside Nights Sit back and enjoy a relaxing evening on the Lady of the Lake dockside! Feel the fresh air on your face, sway to the live music, and relax into the lake lifestyle. Cash bar is open. Wednesday nights aboard the Lady of the Lake. (641) 357-2243 www.clearlakeiowa.com
The Walking Tourists, Lisa and Tim Trudell love traveling — locally, regionally, nationally and internationally (not as often as they would like). Whether it’s across the world or in their own backyard in Omaha, Nebraska, they are lovers of all things food, travel and adventure! As their name indicates, they like to walk and take the time to discover the little things along the way. Destination Clear Lake 2017

The Surf Ballroom Making waves into the future
Photo provided by Surf Ballroom The historic Surf Ballroom got its name and motif from the desire of the original owners to create a ballroom that resembled an ocean beach club. The murals on the back walls were hand painted to depict pounding surf, swaying palm trees, sailboats and lighthouses. The bamboo and rattan furnishings added to the ambiance of a south sea island. The stage is flanked by palm trees, and the clouds overhead make it seem like you’re dancing under the stars. The ballroom’s iconic pineapple walls were artistically recreated in July 2016. The international symbol of welcome, friendship and hospitality, the pineapples have been a fixture of the lobby area since it was built in 1948. The pineapple stencils are beautifully complimented by the walls’ bamboo finish, welcoming visitors as they enter the ballroom. (Photo of Pineapple Tshirt) In 2009, the Surf Ballroom was identified by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, as a historic rock and roll landmark for its significance to the origins and development of the genre. The plaque inside the lobby reads, “There are few buildings in existence today that represent a complete shift in our musical history. As the last concert venue for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. ‘The Big Bopper’

Richardson, the Surf is the bedrock of where the sound and attitude of rock and roll changed forever.” The ballroom received an additional honor two years later when it was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior. (photo of the Surf exterior) The Surf embraces its place in music history, and through the direction of a non-profit organization (the North Iowa Cultural Center & Museum) overseeing its operations, is also making waves toward the future. The Surf Ballroom & Museum employs an education coordinator who has developed a curriculum of musically influenced activities for all ages. Group tours, school tours and presentations are offered year-round by appointment, as well as specially scheduled historical presentations, tours, classes and events for kids throughout the summer. A new partnership is underway for 2017 as the Surf Ballroom entered into a licensing agreement with a nearby restaurant. The Surf District Rock & Roll Grill gives the Surf additional ways to showcase its immense amount of memorabilia and to further tell the story of the ballroom and its history. Located on the northeast corner of the Surf’s parking lot, the restaurant is the former location of Lu’s Lounge and the historic A&W Lighthouse. www.clearlakeiowa.com
Don’t miss: Three Stars Plaza. Dedicated in 2011, Three Stars Plaza features a central art sculpture consisting of a spindle with stacked records honoring Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. Located a half block west of the Surf Ballroom, the feature recently added an audio component for visitors to enjoy the music of the three rock and roll pioneers.

A guitar and set of three records naming their popular hits: “Peggy Sue,” “Chantilly Lace” and “Donna,” mark the exact spot where the ill-fated plane carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP ‘’The Big Bopper’’ Richardson came to rest following their final concert at the Surf Ballroom on Feb. 2, 1959. In 2009, a second monument was erected on the 50th anniversary of the tragedy honoring their pilot, Roger Peterson.

History
Clear Lake, Iowa has a rich past that will delight the interests of a history buff or an avid student of history. The Clear Lake Historical Society is a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of preserving and interpreting our community’s rich heritage. Letters and diaries relating to the life of the pioneers, early settlers, and distinguished citizens are made available. Historical valuable photographs are preserved and accessible for the public to see. Newspaper, cemetery and school archives are kept for future reference. Help is given to citizens, churches and other groups, which are interested in preserving their archives. All of this is done with the aim to promote and preserve a vital interest in Clear Lake’s local history.
Local members of the community and those who have an avid interest in the history of Clear Lake make up the core of people who keep the society active; studying everything from cemetery records to Buddy Holly to Civil War links to the Chautauqua and many topics in between. Clear Lake was called the “Saratoga of the West” during the late 19th century and for good reason; there is much to discover about Clear Lake from its beginning in 1851. Its resort atmosphere and yet small town feel make it truly a treasure in north Iowa. There are two locations available for those interested in exploring Clear Lake’s fascinating past. The primary depository of archives, known
as the History Room, can be found at the Clear Lake Public Library at 200 N. Fourth St. Hours of operation for the History Room are 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Clear Lake Historical Society maintains an exhibit at Dana’s Decorating Studio located at 309 Main Ave. This exhibit highlights key eras and events from Clear Lake’s past and is open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The Clear Lake Historical Society also provides free walking and driving tours of the community and around the lake, highlighting key events, people and sites. The society sponsors community talks quarterly and has several publications by local authors and about Clear Lake for sale at both the History Room and the Historical Society exhibit. If you are interested in programming, the Clear Lake Historical Society has speakers on a variety of topics relating to the history of the community, north Iowa area and general American history. These individuals can be booked for an event by calling (641) 3576133 or writing the Clear Lake Historical Society at P.O. Box 252, Clear Lake, Iowa 50428. Contact can also be made through email at cliowahistory@gmail.com. Information about ongoing events sponsored by the Clear Lake Historical Society can be found on its website at www.clearlakehistoricalsociety. com and the society can also be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ clearlakehistoricalsociety. Clear Lake’s community historian, H. Milton Duesenberg and Clear Lake Historical Society president, Beth Ann Schumacher, are ready to assist and encourage you to take a step into the past and feel the excitement of history.

John Kopecky: Clear Lake’s Music Man There are two new memorial waysides in City Park on the west side of the 1919 bandstand at the top of the hill celebrating John Kopecky’s legacy. Among many musical achievements, one that still exists today is the North Iowa Band Festival he created in 1932. Thirteen bands from across north Iowa participated with more than 20,000 spectators. After five years in Clear Lake, the event outgrew the facility and was moved 10 miles east to Meredith Willson’s hometown of Mason City where it continues today.

Experience the great outdoors No matter what draws you outdoors, the Clear Lake area is full of natural experiences waiting for you to discover.
BIRDING With some of the best natural habitat in the state, Clear Lake is a haven for a variety of bird species (the area is home to six designated globally Important Bird Areas). Hike the public, paved trail at Ventura Cove, one of the last undeveloped stretches of shoreline on Clear Lake. The woods around it are privately protected, and are home to many migrating bird species, including a former heron rookery. If it’s waterfowl you’re looking to spot, Zirbel Slough can’t be beat — water-loving birds flock to the 330 acres of natural marshes, wetlands and prairie pothole landscape.
Frank Lloyd Wright. Once in Mason City, take the 2-mile Winnebago Trail to the north to visit the Lime Creek Nature Center. Mountain bikers will find luck on the trails extending from Lime Creek Nature Center, and an ever-growing fat biking crowd descends upon the shores of Clear Lake each winter.
HIKING For a true adventure, venture out to Woodford Island near the south end of Clear Lake, right off Grand View Point. Primitive hiking paths flow through the island, donated to the state by Earl and Esther Woodford Ashland in 1971. Trek just 20 miles from the town center and you’ll find a natural haven at the Shellrock River Greenbelt and Preserve, a 590-acre area managed by Cerro Gordo County Conservation. A 7.5-mile hiking and multiuse trail leads you past the limestone bluffs towering the Shellrock River and through the woods and meadows within the preserve.

For an easy and educational hike, take the kids to McIntosh Photo by Julie Pals Woods State Park, where a 1-mile interpretive trail walks you through the many landscapes found within the park, including woodlands, prairie areas and Mallard Marsh. Signs along the way teach how each landscape contributes to the natural uniqueness of Clear Lake. For a longer trip, visit the Lime Creek Conservation Area and Nature Center north of Mason City. The nature center is an exploration into Clear Lake-area’s natural features, and hiking trails lead you throughout the 440-acre preserve, which lies adjacent to the Winnebago River. Want to take education outdoors? Check out one of the nature center’s Explore Outdoors Packs — a backpack full of books, maps, field guides and children-specific activities to help your kids learn more about their natural surroundings. There are three different packs for different interests: tree, insect and bird packs.
Kerri was raised in Iowa City but did most of her growing up on the trails of Lake MacBride State Park, a secluded natural oasis from big city life. There she saw her first owl, built many a campfire and learned to appreciate the value and benefits of protected outdoor spaces. Those experiences stayed with her through a journalism degree at Drake University and led her to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation in hopes of instilling the same love for nature in other Iowans. Kerri manages the foundation’s digital communications and can often be found biking toward the best Iowa brews. Destination Clear Lake 2017

Sixth St. | (641) 357-4823 www.clearlakefire.com Memorial Day - Labor Day Sat.-Sun. 1-4 p.m. or by appointment. Free. Donations welcomed. Resembling a 1920s fire station, this museum takes you through the early days of firefighting. Clear Lake’s own 1924 Ahrens-Fox Pumper Engine is on display and after 50 years of service it is still functional but is now used for parades and special occasions. Local volunteer fire fighters built the museum, filling it with photographs, mementos and antique equipment, telling their story as only they can. Located adjacent to the newly constructed fire station, visitors get a visual comparing old to new. The 9/11 Steel Monument on the site corner is a place of reflection and honor.
