Watershed Stewardship Center at West Creek Summer Solstice Opening Events Friday, June 21 • 10:30 a.m. Dedication Open House until 4 p.m. Saturday, June 22 • 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Community Discovery Day West Creek Reservation • Parma Celebrate the solstice as we joyfully cross the bridge into the new Cleveland Metroparks Watershed Stewardship Center at West Creek! The Watershed Stewardship Center is dedicated to promoting healthy urban watersheds through science, education, research and restoration. This Center was developed through a dedicated partnership between Cleveland Metroparks, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District and West Creek Conservancy to serve a diverse community through adult and youth science education programming and professional training and workshops. Come explore, discover and delight in Watershed Stewardship Center’s unique blend of science and technology, paired with green design and grassroots volunteer action. Learn about your local watershed by viewing our interactive topographic map and tour dozens of water management features. Would you like to meet a Water Hog? Wonder how a green roof makes “cents” by keeping its cool? Want to stroll through our stormwater pipe? There is a new experience for everyone wanting to take the plunge at Watershed Stewardship Center this summer! The Watershed Stewardship Center was designed using sustainable architectural standards and is on track for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. The building was sited near a reclaimed landfill and constructed with energy and water conservation measures at the forefront. It showcases an aquarium that models a healthy Ohio stream and houses a large multipurpose room, two educational classrooms, a wet laboratory, Wi-Fi accessible community resource room, and provides a sustainable work environment for scientists, educators, naturalists and agency staff. Open House festivities include a tour of the interactive exhibits, demonstrations of stormwater management practices and family-friendly activities both days. Dragons and Damsels Sounds like a fairy tale from Brothers Grimm? Most people have seen and admired adult dragonflies and damselflies because of their large size, strong flight, and the beautiful colors of their body and wings. They would really have been impressed had they seen the fossilized (33 million years ago) wing of a giant dragonfly that had a 28-inch wingspan. Do we ever see immature (nymphs) dragonflies or damsels? Probably not because these insects spend their first year in streams, ponds, lakes and slow rivers as very successful carnivores.
Dragonfly nymph
All animals need water, food and oxygen. Water is easy - if you live in it. Food requires specialized equipment. Both the damselflies and dragonflies have a labial extension or “lower lip” Newly emerged dragonfly that is folded under their head. The nymphs usually hide and wait for prey to appear. They then unfold the labial extension, which is about onethird the length of their body and is tipped with two claw-like lobes that capture the prey. Prey is smaller aquatic insects i.e. mosquito larvae and other arthropods. Some larger dragonflies can consume Female Ebony Jewelwing damselfly small toad tadpoles and fish. Adequate oxygen is often the greatest problem for aquatic life. Both dragons and damsels have gills. Damsels have three easily seen feather-like gills on the back end of their abdomen. Dragons have a number of gill plates inside their anal opening and continually
admit water and can expel it with force. This not only provides the gill plates with oxygen, but also provides jet propulsion for quick movements to escape or capture other organisms. Dragons and damsels have a very unusual life cycle in that their entire nymphal stage is about one year versus a few weeks for the adult stage. When the nymphs become mature they crawl out of the water, attach to emergent vegetation, split their exoskeleton and emerge as adults. After a few hours the adult flies off to get enough food for energy to find a mate. Fertilized females then deposit eggs in a suitable aquatic environment. Once this mission is accomplished the life span of the adult is short. For the taxonomist, dragonflies and damselflies are in the insect order Odonata, which means tooth and refers to the teeth on their mandibles. Don’t worry, they don’t bite us! My favorite damsels are Ebony Jewelwings. They are seen along the small stream on the Wildflower Loop Trail in Brecksville Reservation. They are easily identified by their black wings and irridescent green bodies. If the angle of light striking the bodies changes, it will convince you that the body is not green, but a beautiful iridescent blue. Color changes like this are due to physical structure, not a pigment. Females can be identified by white stigmas on the edge of the wings. Note how the wings are held up when damsels are resting as opposed to dragonflies that always keep them extended. To learn more about dragons and damsels join me for a Hidden Story Hike on June 12 at Brecksville Nature Center.

Notes from the Field
The Denial of Nature There are environmental heroes all around us, but like most environmentally-oriented folk, they tend to not brag. I heard of another one this week, a tree company who was asked to bid on a project in Rocky River. When they looked at the property, a home recently purchased by a young couple, they found a few older trees in disrepair and a magnificent Ginko tree. The gentleman who owned the tree company came back to the new owner, and said that he could not cut the magnificent Ginko, that is was too majestic a tree to cut. He lost the contract, of course, and another tree company cut the magnificent Ginko later that week and reduced most of it to a pile of wood chips. There’s not a single trace of it. To the next owner, it will be as if there never was a magnificent Ginko, or any other trees there, and the next owner will never know the beauty, the shade, the sounds of songbirds, or the magnificence of sharing his days with another living thing more than five times his age with his whole neighborhood and all the wildlife that it supported. It is as if it never existed. And so it goes. As if it had never existed. Large trees are nothing but trouble, my neighbor says, cutting down three in his backyard last spring. The leaves are too much trouble to rake. The birds leave droppings on the deck. There’s too much shade and the deck is growing algae. After the trees are gone, he says there’s too much sun on the deck, and he hasn’t used it more than a few times all summer. Too hot, he says, as he stays indoors. His electric bills have climbed too, as less shade needs more air conditioning. We talked across the hedge only a handful of times last summer. Too hot to be out, he says. And so it goes. I despair of the differences among the honorable tree company, the other cutter and honestly good people like my neighbor. Like children who receive a bright, shiny new toy and accidentally break it, their actions are never called into question, and soon forgotten. Yet unlike toys, the gifts of nature offered to them are lost forever, down, down in an ever-increasing spiral that ends with less nature, less wildlife, fewer trees, less native wildflowers, until what was, lives as 4

only a memory of the old ones, legends told to grandchildren on threadbare laps, dim history then filed and largely forgotten in the passage of time. And so it goes. And then there’s you, my friend. You are reading this Cleveland Metroparks magazine because
you believe in something that you feel is important, and feel a part of something larger than yourself. And I use the word “feel” purposely, for there is a difference between “think” or “believe” or “know” and “feel.” Those things which are of the greatest value to us, looking back over our years, are not the things that we can academically or intellectually measure, quantify, touch or judge with the laws of science or man. They are instead those wonderful times that we feel, remembered, unmeasured times and warm summer days and snowflakes and sunsets, surprises and bird songs and woodchucks in green meadows and owls at twilight and friends by our side. Those things of great value cannot be measured by whatever is found in a bank account or stock portfolio or pocketbook, they can only be found in what truly touches the human heart. It is our experiences, not our things by which life is measured and remembered. Barring an environmental uprising, the battle of neighborhood nature may be lost in our lifetimes. The big trees may fall and be forgotten. It will be the green islands of places like your Cleveland Metroparks which will become the arks, the last refuges of places that are wild and green, filled with surprises, quiet adventures and delights to be had by anyone with the will to find them. The time will come when you will be asked to support Cleveland Metroparks and that support will both keep the ark afloat and add to its capacity, so that the green islands continue to thrive and grow despite the pressures surrounding them. It is a simple thing, but it will be so critically important. Don’t forget.
Naturalist’s Almanac
June
June is a transition month from cool spring to warmer summer days. Spring ephemeral wildflowers are now gone and will be missed until next spring. The focus of flowers now shifts from woodlands to wetlands as this is the time wetlands come alive in flowers, amphibians and insects. The woodlands are now filled with songs of nesting birds and the meadow vegetation is growing rapidly. Birds
Fish
The rush of spring migration tapers off with north-bound warblers, vireos and thrushes moving on warm nighttime winds. Within the rich beech-maple forests flute-like calls of wood thrushes and veeries echo and hooded warblers, redeyed vireos, ovenbirds, scarlet tanagers are setting up territories and beginning nest building. Sycamore-laden riversides are alive with cerulean and yellowthroated warblers, Baltimore orioles, Blue-gray gnatcatchers and rose-breasted grosbeaks.
Common carp begin to thrash along shorelines of Lake Isaac and the lower reaches of the Rocky River as they spawn and lay eggs in warm shallow water.
Wildflowers Wetlands come into bloom this month as the water lilies floating on the surface provide a place for dragonflies to rest. Along the edges the purples of native pickerelweed are joined by yellow iris a beautiful but aggressive non-native flower. Cow parsnip as tall as a person appears with umbrella-shaped white blossoms along stream banks and marsh edges.
Reptiles Snapping turtles and painted turtles can be seen traveling from their wetland homes in search of a location to lay eggs in a warm open area. As their eggs incubate for the next few months the hatchling sex will be determined by the temperature of the nest. Amphibians The banjo-like “twang” of green frogs can now be heard in evenings near practically every permanent body of water throughout Cleveland Metroparks. Gray treefrogs call loudly from secluded locations in the lofty treetops or wetland edges. The first tiny toadlets and froglets begin their transformation from aquatic to terrestrial life.
