JULY Program Guide 2018

Enjoy Summer on the Lakefront Explore Your Park for good health

Asian Highlands What to expect from the new habitat

A LETTER FROM BRIAN ZIMMERMAN Time to Explore Cleveland Metroparks As June turns to July, we’re nearly halfway through the year! There’s never a better time to visit Cleveland Metroparks and see all there is to offer. This year has been a pivotal one following our centennial celebration and so far we haven’t rested in our old age. In April, we joined Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland Clinic Children’s to kick off a new wellness campaign. The ‘Explore Your Park’ collaboration is making it easier than ever to access free events and programs in your local park. This spring we also launched our new brand campaign, Time to Explore, designed to spark curiosity, exploration and discovery across the Park District. By now you may have seen our “Top Ten” lists that are helping to guide exploration. This month we’re encouraging you to check out 10 unique habitats at the Zoo. The list includes our new state-of-the-art Asian Highlands exhibit that features Amur and snow leopards, red pandas and takin.

Lately, I’ve been able to take advantage of a few of my favorite hikes including the Sylvan Loop Trail at the A.B. Williams Trailhead in North Chagrin Reservation and the Fort Hill Stairs in Rocky River Reservation. I’ve also had a chance to catch up with our crews who are working on a new trail network in West Creek – stay tuned for more details on that! As we hit our summer stride, we have plenty of big events planned including the inaugural Taste on the Lake presented by Sprint at Edgewater Park that will include local cuisine, art and music. August is also bringing the U.S.A. Triathlon right in your Cleveland Metroparks. I hope you’re also able to create your own lasting experience in Cleveland Metroparks this summer. It’s time to explore!

Exercise and “Explore Your Park” for Good Health

E

xercise is one of the keys to preventing heart disease, the number one killer of both men and women in the United States. Exercise is also a legitimate treatment option for depression, as endorsed by the American Psychiatric Association. “Exercise will lower your blood pressure, improve your cholesterol profile, help control blood sugar, and reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes and common cancers,” says James Hekman, M.D., Medical Director, Cleveland Clinic Lakewood Family Health Center, which opens to the community on July 11. Designed for the healthcare needs of Lakewood residents, this new family health center continues to offer convenient access to the full range of Cleveland Clinic primary and specialty care as well as a 24/7 emergency department. “Lakewood Family Health Center represents a new generation in healthcare focused on world-class quality, outstanding service, and strong educational programs,” says Dr. Hekman. “We are partnering with community organizations to break down barriers to healthcare and enhance wellness in our neighborhoods.” “Explore Your Park” is a partnership between Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Clinic Children’s and Cleveland Metroparks designed to connect residents with the vast array of free educational programs and activities at the Metroparks.

On the west side, you can explore the Rocky River Reservation, located in Rocky River, Berea, Brook Park, Cleveland, Fairview Park, Lakewood, North Olmsted and Olmsted Township. The reservation contains more than 2,500 acres of nature and activities, including golf, hiking, biking and bridle trails, boating, fishing and the Rocky River Nature Center, where guests can climb the Fort Hill Stairs. Whatever the activity, psychologists say that spending time among the trees can be therapeutic for both body and mind. Ongoing research indicates that forest therapy can be an exercise in mindfulness. The sights, sounds and smells of the forest put people in touch with the present-moment experience, so our brains stop anticipating, recalling, ruminating and worrying. Take the time to exercise at least 30 minutes daily. Exploring Cleveland Metroparks is a good way to get active, and it’s free and universally available. Cleveland Clinic Lakewood Family Health Center, located at 14601 Detroit Ave., opens Wednesday, July 11. For more information, visit clevelandclinic.org/lakewoodFHC.

NATURALIST’S ALMANAC

Summer July arrives with long summer days and insect serenades. During the day, annual cicadas burst into song as temperatures spike and meadows are filled with crickets’ and grasshoppers’ raspy calls. After the sun sets, the chorus grows richer as katydids join, singing from high in the tree canopy. Bird songs still dominate the sounds of early morning in the deep woodlands, but as the month’s end draws near, warblers, tanagers, thrushes and other resident species go quiet as the nesting season winds down. The very first of the year’s migrant shorebirds are heading southward, and blackbirds again begin to build in flocks. The stunning colors of large rosemallow and pickerelweed flowers adorn the edges of wetlands and ponds. Milkweed – the host plant of the monarch butterfly – begins to explode its crown of pink flowers. By the end of July, early goldenrod, first of many goldenrods to bloom, becomes a harbinger of autumn as it adds touches of bright yellow to shady open places along parkways.

August begins the turning point of

summer, and the first days of fall migration are underway. Flocks of blackbirds start to congregate in large numbers, bats begin to disperse from maternity colonies and the first southerly migration of shorebirds begin. Late summer marks the end of breeding season for most birds and the dawn chorus of songbirds such as warblers, flycatchers, tanagers and grosbeaks has quieted. August nights provide night adventurers, opportunities to gaze at the shooting stars when the Perseid meteor shower peaks early in the month. August is the peak for dragonfly, damselfly and butterfly diversity. Skimmers, darners, bluets, spreadwings, baskettails, saddlebags and other unique odonates lay eggs in ponds and lakes. The rich soil nutrients found in floodplain forests allow some of the tallest wildflowers in Cleveland Metroparks to thrive. As August comes to a close, salamander larvae begin their transition from the water to land, completing their mating cycle for the year.

September ushers in the end

of summer, bringing cooler night temperatures and the first fall colors. This is one of the most exciting months for birding in Cleveland Metroparks as fall migration swings into full gear. A visit to Huntington or Lakefront Reservation during strong northern gales offers a chance to observe the initial large movements of waterfowl, terns, gulls, and, on a red-letter day, a jaeger. September’s migration mayhem can offer birders the chance to see over a hundred species in one day. The insect world is still abuzz in September, as monarch migration begins. Large, bright orange and black butterflies make an astounding migration south to Mexico. On a warm day with north winds, visit Wendy and Wildwood Parks, or Edgewater, Huntington and Euclid Creek Reservations to witness the arrival of hundreds to thousands of monarchs on U.S. ground.

Did you know? Q: What do monarchs eat? A: Monarch butterflies specialize in laying their eggs on milkweed plants. This family of plants is a host for their black, white and yellow-striped caterpillars. Toxins within milkweed plants protect caterpillars from predators. Q: What’s so special about a butterfly? A: Monarch butterflies, one of the most iconic insects in the world, make one of the most spectacular migrations of all animals. Flying over 2,000 miles from Canada to spend the winter in Mexico, these striking black and orange gems use biological clocks to navigate on their remarkable flights south. Q: How do they know how to fly to Mexico? A: Embedded in their antennae, tiny biological clocks work alongside receptive fields in their eyes to detect the sun’s position. Using these tools, a monarch butterfly is able to decide directions: which directional angle to change and whether it should turn left or right.

Rocky River Reservation: before

Rocky River Reservation: after

Help protect, expand, and restore the trails you love with a gift to the Trails Fund today Your gift to the Trails Fund will allow us to complete numerous improvements to our trails system, including the installation of improved signage throughout the Park District and priority projects, such as:

Rocky River Reservation West Channel Pond Trail

West Creek Reservation Central Trail Network

Frequently closed and damaged due to flooding, the existing West Channel Pond Trail will be decommissioned and slightly rerouted to more stable ground. The new, restored trail will increase the footprint of the wetland area and feature elevated boardwalks that will allow guests to safely explore without damaging the landscape. The restoration of unsanctioned trails will improve habitat for plant species and wildlife and help improve navigation of this trail system.

The trails division is currently working on the design and construction of a new shared-use natural surface trail network in West Creek Reservation. Parts of the existing natural surface trail network will be reconstructed as part of the new trail system, while other sections will be decommissioned and fully restored. These decommissioned trails will be replaced with sustainable trails that are being built almost entirely by hand with the help of seasonal crews and dedicated volunteers.

ZOO NEWS

Come Explore Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s New Asian Highlands Habitat

C

leveland Metroparks Zoo’s new state-of-the-art Asian Highlands habitat is officially open! The new global destination area of the zoo, just west of Wilderness Trek, is now home to several species including Amur and snow leopards, red pandas, and a new species for the Zoo, the takin, a goat-antelope species. “Asian Highlands will provide opportunities for guests to connect with our animals like never before and show how they can help secure a future for some of the world’s most endangered animals,” said Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Executive Director, Chris Kuhar.

Larger and more complex spaces The new exhibit provides significantly larger and more complex habitats for each of the four species. The Amur and snow leopards will be provided over four times the amount of space and will have the opportunity to rotate between four different interconnected habitat areas that offer new enrichment features, including elevated

platforms and tunnels, climbing poles and more. The red pandas will also enjoy a significantly larger, more complex space and there will be a newly renovated yard for the takin.

is designed to improve awareness of wildlife conservation efforts, empower guests to join the cause and secure a future for wildlife.

The habitat totals nearly one acre and incorporates elements of Asian culture throughout, including central Chinese influenced architecture and stonework. A diverse array of natural elements found in the regions of Asia where these species reside in the wild is replicated throughout the habitats.

While guest awareness and participation in conservation is increasing, the Asian Highlands habitat builds on those efforts by directly incorporating signage and other engaging elements that focus on conservation. The habitat will be home to several endangered species, including one of the most endangered big cats on earth, the Amur leopard, with fewer than 100 known to remain in the wild.

The habitat provides an immersive experience for guests including unobstructed glass viewing, allowing guests to get a great, close-up view to help connect to the animals.

“The habitat will offer guests some unique ways to learn about and join our conservation community that supports scientists studying and protecting these species in their natural habitats,” said Kuhar.

A focus on conservation

Asian Highlands was funded jointly by Cleveland Metroparks and the Cleveland Zoological Society, the nonprofit partner of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. The habitat is part of the Zoo’s Master Plan to create more dynamic spaces for the animals and an immersive experience for guests.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has been focused on conservation for more than 20 years but recently brought those efforts to the forefront with the Future for Wildlife campaign. The campaign, which officially became the focus of the rebrand in 2017,

CONSERVATION & SCIENCE

Experience all the Natural Habitats of the Emerald Necklace The natural habitats of Ohio represent a crossroads where landscape influences from surrounding regions converge. The relationship of climate, geology, glacial history and post-glacial landscape development has led to what we know today as our forests, meadows and wetlands. And of course, the human element has played its own significant part in influencing the natural scenery of Ohio including the Greater Cleveland region. By protecting more than 23,000 acres of natural area, Cleveland Metroparks provides excellent opportunities to observe these different influences across each area of the Emerald Necklace.

East Reservations

West Reservations

(Acacia, Euclid Creek, Garfield Park, North Chagrin, South Chagrin)

(Big Creek, Bradley Woods, Huntington, Lakefront, Rocky River)

The eastern reservations of the Emerald Necklace are located on or at the edge of the physiographic region known as the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau. Relatively steep valleys are common and, particularly in North Chagrin Reservation, good examples of mature beech-maple forest and hemlock-mixed hardwood forest can be found. Some of the Park District’s largest and oldest trees can be seen while hiking in A.B. Williams Memorial Woods. Areas where eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is the dominant tree feel like forests more commonly found to the north and east areas of Ohio. On dry ridges and particularly along the rim of the Allegheny Plateau in Euclid Creek Reservation, forests are dominated by long-lived oak species that prefer acidic soils. At Acacia Reservation park visitors can observe recently restored streams, wetlands and meadows within the headwaters of Euclid Creek, a direct tributary to Lake Erie.

Reservations along the west portion of the Emerald Necklace fall mostly within the Lake Erie Plain, a region characterized by relatively flat terrain on an old lake bed from the precursor to what we know today as Lake Erie. The East Branch of the Rocky River has cut an impressive valley through the region’s oldest exposed bedrock resulting in large shale bluffs that support sensitive habitats and have produced several noteworthy prehistoric fish fossils. In flat, poorly drained areas like Bradley Woods Reservation, extensive swamps provide important habitat for sensitive plants and animals, some of which are at the extreme edge of their natural range in northern Ohio. Mature riparian forests, rich with spring wildflowers, can be found throughout the Rocky River valley. And along Lake Erie at Huntington Reservation and the recently acquired Lakefront Reservation, small pockets of relict sand dune plant communities are visible to keen observers.

8 Emerald Necklace July 2018

Central and South Reservations (Bedford, Brecksville, Brookside, Hinckley, Mill Stream Run, Ohio & Erie Canal, Washington, West Creek) The southern part of the Emerald Necklace offers opportunities to enjoy the largest contiguous tracts of forest that Cleveland Metroparks has to offer. Floodplain forests can be found along the Rocky and Cuyahoga river valleys and large, ecologically-significant sandstone outcroppings and boulders characterize the Whipp’s Ledges area of Hinckley Reservation. The overlook at Tinker’s Creek Gorge, a dedicated National Natural Landmark, is a must see feature of Bedford Reservation that highlights the connection between our region’s geology and biology. Whether you are interested in hiking through a mature forest or enjoying a park amenity, visual representations of our rich natural history abound. Each geographic region of the Emerald Necklace offers distinct natural features worth taking time to learn about and appreciate.
