hat do you get when you mix urban, eclectic, casual décor and fresh made-from- scratch food with a 180º view of the Cuyahoga River? You get your go-to after-work hangout. You get your favorite date night restaurant and your unwind-and-relax-bythe-river weekend bistro. Merwin’s Wharf, Cleveland Metroparks inviting new restaurant with overstuffed couches and chairs, firepit and fireplace on the 3,000 sq. ft. landscaped patio and an eclectic décor inside is the perfect place for family and friends to drink, relax, gather and eat thoughtfully-made, creative comfort food. Continuing on in the tradition of one of the Flats earliest tavern owners, Noble Merwin, Merwin’s Wharf is located in Rivergate Park, a 2.8-acre green oasis in the center of Cleveland’s Flats District. In the early 1800s, Noble Merwin saw the natural beauty of this flat ox-bow area created by the looping river

and purchased a log tavern at the intersection of Superior and Vineyard, long before the area was turned over to commerce and trade. Acquired by Cleveland Metroparks in 2012, nature is now reclaiming this picturesque area and you may see rowers or a barge glide past or great blue herons flying over the river. A new, shining gem in the Emerald Necklace, Merwin’s Wharf will be open for dinner from 3 p.m. to close, Tuesdays through Sundays opening this July. Need a unique private meeting room? Merwin’s Wharf is the perfect place and available for private functions during the day. Call 216-635-3389. Go to clevelandmetroparks.com for opening day information.

Merwin’s Wharf is located at 1785 Merwin Ave. From I-90, exit at W. 25 St. and go north to Superior Viaduct. Turn right on Superior Viaduct and then right on Center St. to Columbus Rd. Turn right on Columbus Rd. to Merwin Ave./Rivergate Park.

Natural Discoveries: Buttonbush

“When your views on the world and your intellect are being challenged and you begin to feel uncomfortable because of a contradiction you’ve detected that is threatening your current model of the world or some aspect of it, pay attention. You are about to learn something.” William H. Drury Jr., College of the Atlantic

T

he blooms of our native buttonbush open in mid-summer heat with striking spherical creamy white flowers. Gather at the buttonbush early, before the sun warms insects, and bees are still sleeping on the tiny globes. It’s fun to discover how bees awaken. Humble bumblebees stretch each of their tiny black legs, one at a time. The buttonbush thrives in wet areas and hosts several species of moths and butterflies. One animal on the buttonbush attracts more attention than all the others. When you see this insect for the first time, you may think of a baby hummingbird. Indeed it does look just like what one would think a baby hummingbird would look like. But wait, think again; when a hummingbird fledges, it’s as large as its parent. Notice, too, when viewing this insect you don’t hear the familiar humming sound.

This star of the buttonbush is Hermaris thysbe, a hummingbird clearwing moth. When it first emerges, its wings are entirely black. The dark cells fall off quickly while in flight, revealing striking clear wings. Clearwings love the buttonbush and it’s possible to watch them closely. You can actually look through their wings like a window and view the buttonbush blossoms from which they are drawing nectar. The clearwing’s beauty speaks for itself and its flight pattern is sweetly poetic. Visitors literally race through our nature center’s door… breathless, “We just saw something and it looks like a baby hummingbird.” Naturalists know what they are seeing but we interrupt and say, “Where were you?” Visitors often answer, “Near a plant with large white ball

shaped flowers.” Immediately, connections between two natives of our area may be revealed. The excitement grows as our visitors discover a native animal plus a native plant that they’ve probably passed often. Now, they may be formally introduced. While visitors are full of fervor, doing their best to describe the animal, I too, am full of anticipation, but mostly gratitude, for that wonderful woody plant. I want to gather as many people as possible, so others may discover the clearwing’s flight. It’s time! Hurry! The buttonbush is blooming. Joni H. Norris Naturalist, Rocky River Nature Center

NOTES FROM THE FIELD

Sights and Sounds of Summer June arrives anxious, wet and green, and August heat makes us fondly remember December. September is neither summer nor fall, who could love such a bipolar month? But July ! July begins with the sounds of fledgling birds, passes by with the sparkles of fireflies, and slides out on the thirty first proud of new life and hope and panting with all the effort it took to make it so. I love July! We measure and remember our lives through the experiences we’ve had. Nothing is more treasured than great memories of time spent with friends or even spent alone in special places afield that have given depth, texture and meaning to our lives. People crave experiences, especially if in having those experiences they can feel safe, intrigued, provoked to think at deeper levels, and have fun in the outdoors. A good experience leads to another, and often another, as we search for the pleasure of realizing the joys of our own existence. Self-fulfillment is really an ultimate goal of our quest for meaning in our lives. It often comes disguised as fun, companionship, exercise, learning, or simple pleasure of being. So what of July?

slow-moving river as you paddle past in a Cleveland Metroparks canoe or kayak. July is a cool forest hike in the shade of trees that were old before your grandparents were born, and the sounds of pileated woodpeckers reaping a harvest of tasty summer insects overhead. Go to Lakefront Reservation with a picnic breakfast and watch the sun rise over the most productive of all the Great Lakes. Watch a quiet, still Lake Erie at dawn that late risers never get to see, and walk a sandy beach with your toes in water that’s traveled a thousand miles to be there with you.

Of all the months, July gives most attention to the meaning of the full richness of summer.

I said I loved July, I think, because it is the most sensory of all months. July is dark star-filled nights with magical fireflies twinkling against forest trees. July is the rich sweet smells of the riot of summer growth of aquatic plants and algae and the deep resonating “go-round, go-round” calls of bullfrogs hiding on water lilies on Hinckley Lake or a nearby

4 Emerald Necklace, July 2014

July is filled with sounds, but the calls of birds give way to the calls of insects as night falls on forests and fields. Click beetles make strange sounds in rotten logs, puzzling to our ears, and overhead at twilight nighthawks may buzz as they search for flying moths and little flies.

For thirty years, as the last Chief Naturalist of Cleveland Metroparks and then its first Chief of Outdoor Education, I worked with talented naturalists and interpretive staff, helping them build new programs and reach out to more and more people with messages of conservation, caring, and belonging to nature. A finer staff never trod the trails of any park district, anywhere, and this month’s program listing is perhaps the finest, most diverse and most inclusive I’ve ever seen. Join your park district staff in a new adventure this month. Hike, walk, bike, run, paddle or just sit and contemplate. Get wet, get dusty, get muddy, get tired, get smart, but just get out. There’s no better time. The richness of July is fully expressed this month through the daily slate of programs, and it’s all waiting for you. Come out and play!

NATURALIST’S ALMANAC

July Hot summer days have arrived and the forests that were once filled with bird songs now give way to insect serenades. During the day, cicadas sing as soon as the temperature reaches 70 degrees and the meadows are filled with crickets and grasshoppers raspy calls. After the sun sets, the chorus grows as katydids join other insects. The abundance of these insects provide a bounty for other animals as birds, fox, rodents and other insects utilize them as protein-filled meals. Birds While most resident breeding birds have already fledged young, the brilliant black-and-gold American goldfinches and ornately colored cedar waxwings only now begin to gather nesting material. Bird songs still dominate the sounds of early morning in the deep woodlands, but as the month’s end draws near, warblers, tanagers, thrushes and other resident species become quiet as the nesting season winds down. Young red-shouldered and broad-winged hawks are now patrolling the woodland edges. The very first of the year’s migrant shorebirds are heading south, and blackbirds again begin to build in flocks. Insects July is high time to find a virtual cornucopia of butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies. Flashy swallowtails, sulphurs, azures, and fritillaries adorn the heads of grassland wildflowers. The airspace above wetlands, ponds and lakes is a flurry of wings with skimmers, dashers, darners, forktails, and pondhawk dragonflies and damselflies mat-

ing and catching small insect prey. By the end of July, warm evenings bring on the trilling and buzzing serenades of katydids and grasshoppers. Wildflowers The stunning colors of large rosemallow and pickerelweed flowers adorn the edges of wetlands and ponds. Milkweed – the host plant of the monarch butterfly – begins to explode its crown of pink flowers. Large fields hold tall stands of purple ironweed and its look-alike Joe-pye weed, purple coneflower, Queen Anne’s lace, all important plants for nectaring insects. Jewelweed flourishes in vast clumps in sunlit patches of woodlands and woodland edges. By the end of July, early goldenrod, first of many goldenrods to bloom, becomes a harbinger of autumn as it adds touches of bright yellow to shady open places along parkways. Mammals Male white-tailed deer antlers finish their rapid growth this month, but remain covered in soft velvet, while the fawn’s spots begin to fade.

Starting at Squire’s Castle in North Chagrin Reservation, the run follows the scenic Cuyahoga Rver valley through Cleveland Metroparks, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Summit Metro Parks and concludes in downtown Cuyahoga Falls. With themed aid stations, team name contest, and a generous cut-off time, Burning River has something for all adventure seekers! And, runners can now raise funds for Cleveland Metroparks Trails Fund instead of paying a fee. Donation commitments range from $200 – $750. CLEVELAND METROPARKS GOLF

Pro Tip of the Month Selecting the Correct Type Wedge for Your Game What is bounce? Bounce is the amount of angle built into the bottom, or sole of a wedge. The amount of bounce varies by degree. A wedge with minimal bounce is around 4 degrees, and can increase up to 14 degrees. Bounce keeps the club from digging into turf or sand, and helps to eliminate the ‘fat’ shot.

Swing types. Typical swings break down into two types, a sweeper vs. a digger. A sweeper will take little to no divot. A digger takes a full divot.

For the sweeper, off of turf, use a medium bounce wedge for most conditions. On real firm turf, a wedge with less bounce is best. Off soft turf, more bounce is desirable. From the bunker, minimal to medium is most desired. For the digger, off of turf, choose a wedge with more bounce to meet most conditions. For firm conditions, a medium bounce will do for these shots, and from the bunker, choose more bounce. Tom Kochensparger, PGA Manakiki Golf Course

OUTDOOR RECREATION or@clevelandmetroparks.com clevelandmetroparks.com/or 216-341-1704

About five years ago, I attended a number of evening programs through the Institute of the Great Outdoors (now Outdoor Recreation) for general interest and to also update skills on activities that I was involved with years ago. After being asked a number of times if I was a volunteer, I finally decided to “cross over to the dark side,” went through the application process and have been a volunteer with the park since December 2010 and have enjoyed myself immensely. Over the years, I have assisted with snowshoe programs, Beginning Backpacking classes along with Beginning Backpacking Weekends in Hinckley Reservation, hikes on the Buckeye Trail and a number of community events. My favorite experience is probably Buzzard Weekend in Hinckley. Outdoor Recreation has a wide variety of events dealing with kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, mountain bike races, marathon runs and summer camp programs for children. If it’s dealing with the outdoors, Outdoor Recreation has something for everyone regardless of the time of year. It is always a good feeling to see people leaving after a program with that special gleam in their eyes that says, “I get it now!!!” If you enjoy the outdoors or are possibly interested in a customized outdoor program for your group, Outdoor Recreation is the place for you – check it out!!!
