Voyageur Canoe Paddle Program For over 20 years, Cleveland Metroparks has offered this dynamic outdoor experience that includes educational fun, a recreational outlet and fantastic social involvement – all in a 34-foot canoe. The Voyageur Canoe Paddle Program quickly immerses everyone back to the 1790s when the Fur Trade was king. Jean Petite and his wily crew load you into a replica fur trade canoe and begin to share their stories of how the life of a Voyageur was lived paddling for the Northwest Fur Company. All participants have the opportunity to paddle, sing and taste the food familiar to these men and women of the North Country. Each adventure is an hour on the water with time at the encampment to broaden your knowledge and experience of the Great Lakes Fur Trade Era. The canoe holds 18 participants. We welcome individuals, families and small groups to join us for this historic, fun-filled hour. $5 per person includes use of paddle, life jacket and an exciting adventure on Hinckley Lake or Wallace Lake.

Hooked on Fishing Fishing has always been a part of my life. I remember fishing with my dad throughout my childhood and into adulthood. We would hike through the woods to find the perfect secret fishing spot or walk down to the lake to fish off the dock. I learned a lot of life lessons through my fishing experiences. For example, fishing fills you with joy and excitement. But it can also make you feel overwhelmed with sadness and frustration if the fish gets away or never even nibbles your bait. Fishing is responsible for the odd amount of patience I possess. Most of all, growing up fishing every summer is the reason why I feel compelled to be outside relaxing in nature along the water’s edge once the weather gets warm. When I started teaching outdoor education, one of the first programs I wanted to teach was fishing. It was something that I wanted to share with others. Plus it is a great way to spend your day outside by the water. I love the anticipation of who is going to catch the first fish! Usually it is a little girl, who has much more patience than the boys her age. Whoever it is, everyone else along the water shares in the excitement of the first catch of the day. As more fish are caught, we discuss what species they are and how to handle each safely. For some kids the best part of fishing is getting to hold and touch a fish. The expressions on their faces are priceless. At the end of the program we release the fish back to their homes, and then we all head to our homes to share the fishing stories from the day. Throughout the warmer months there are multiple opportunities to join a fishing program. May 3 and 4 the Ohio Department of Natural Resources offers free fishing days where no fishing license is required. Several reservations offer fishing programs and even fishing classes. Some of our summer camps include a day of fishing as well. Fishing is an excellent activity for any age, and it is a great way to get out and enjoy your parks. There are multiple Cleveland Metroparks Reservations that are home to a variety of waterways for the public to fish: Lake Erie, Rocky River, Chagrin River, Ohio & Erie Canal, Hinckley Lake, Wallace Lake, and Shadow Lake. Several of these areas are stocked with fish annually by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division. Fishing in Cleveland Metroparks is free, but remember that you will need a valid Ohio fishing license if you are 16 years old or older. Happy fishing! NOTES FROM THE FIELD________________________________________________________________________________
Something Familiar You can’t go home again, Thomas Wolfe once wrote, and he meant it. Yet we carry the images of what has come to be home within us for all our lives. Nature is life, a rich flowing river of things new and things old and passing, a river of daily renewal and daily endings. From time to time I watch television, mostly science and history and news and geography. Like you, sometimes something else catches my eye and I turn the volume down or off to read. A day last week found that happening. A new magazine arrived and I dropped the television volume to read an article promising the latest tips in gull identification. Engrossed, my mind drifted off the video, forgetting even its subject until I turned a page and casually glanced up at the now-silent screen, it showing a man hiking through an open, weedy field and on into a forest. Suddenly, all the memories of a childhood spent outdoors in rural Michigan came flooding back. I could hear the crunching of leaves in my mind as the person strode across the field, and hear autumn crickets sing and feel the brush of dried goldenrod stems across a jacket long gone. I could sense the smells of a warm October afternoon as once more I pushed through tall grasses, feeling burrs and stick-tights grabbing knit sleeves and woolen stockings, and taste sweat from the exertion of walking fast and hard in the old canvas coat I wore on those afternoons afield. Not a sound came from the television, but the scene I saw was as surely southern Michigan as if it were printed across the screen. For a brief moment or two, I was

transported back through space and time, and I was home again. I have been studying how naturalists seem to see so many things that other people miss, or miss until they too spend many, many hours afield. Some scientists refer to the apparent gift as nothing more than pattern recognition, or the sometimes sub-conscious realization that “one of these things is not like the others”. It is a way of seeing, a way of observing things in such a way that when a certain shape does not match its background, or a certain movement is unlike other more common movements around it, well, there’s something there that bears a closer look. This we call a “tactical observation,” one made on the spot for a specific purpose. An observation based on experience, however, is considered a “strategic observation,” and can be more difficult to define or even explain. I remember a conversation I had not long after arriving at Cleveland Metroparks with a great woodsman and humanist, Bill Miller. We were looking at trees at Maple Grove Picnic Area, then just selected as the site for the park district’s first maple sugaring operation. We had just gotten out of the truck when Bill looked over at a huge tall tree with sprawling branches each larger than a large man’s waist. “Look at that big sugar maple,” Bill exclaimed. In a forest filled with trees of all kinds, he had instantly spotted the Grandfather Tree. “How do you know it’s a sugar maple at this distance, Bill?” I asked. “Because it looks like one,” he replied confidently. And, of course he was right.

May Bill had spent a life afield, as a hunter and fisherman and hiker and observer. He didn’t have to learn the scientific terms for anything maple, he had come to recognize all the ages, forms and shapes of sugar maple trees as he hiked and explored, and in his keen mind had noted and filed and merged them into a quickaccess memory bank that could identify any variety or shape of any sugar maple instantly. “One of these is not like the others….” Just as Bill had recognized one of his favorite trees, I had recognized the landform, vegetation and spatial arrangement of the old successional fields of my youth. These are not things you can learn readily from a book, they call for time spent, for boots on the ground as it is said today. While the locations may change, the juxtaposition of topography and vegetation become instantly recognizable. Anyone can learn to do it, all it takes is being there, through different kinds of light and seasons until it becomes something you feel, not something you know. You can go home again, Mr. Wolfe. Perhaps not to the same physical place you remember, for as all things in life they will have changed, but to the mix of sights and sounds and textures and odors of places well remembered. This kind of going home is filed away in the deep recesses of the interconnected. Interrelated neurons of our brain, waiting for the trigger that takes us there again. Come to Cleveland Metroparks, my friend, and build those memories for yourself.
May is best enjoyed on the trails as the flora and fauna can change daily. Before long, spring will quickly give way to summer. Leaves are rapidly growing and bringing a fresh green color to the woodlands. Migrant bird songs are heard from treetops as they acrobatically search for small insects to fuel their incredible journey. On the forest floor spring wildflowers are in full bloom and are being visited by beetles, flies, bees and even ants as sweet nectar is the reward for their pollination service. The first babies of spring arrive and Mother’s Day is a good time to see goslings, ducklings and even fawns. Birds
Trees
Songbird migration peaks the first two weeks of May as wave after wave of birds arrive in Cleveland Metroparks. Some like the blackburnian warbler began their journey in South America only stopping briefly to refuel then continuing to boreal forests farther north. Others, like the wood thrush arrive from forest of Panama to stake out a territory in local forests filling the morning and evening with their flutelike song. Migrating at night nocturnal flights of these and other bird migrants can be so impressive that they can be seen on weather radar. While birds continue to arrive this month others like bluebirds have already fledged their first brood.
A typical spring brings total leaf out by mid-May. Oaks, which are one of the last trees to sprout new leaves, are now are in full bloom. Their drooping catkins are not showy but produce a great deal of pollen that is dispersed on the wind. Numerous insects are attracted to graze on this pollen and can be a great location to look for songbirds feasting on pollen covered insects.
Wildflowers A walk along a river in a floodplain forest one can be rewarded with blankets of Virginia bluebells and wild hyacinth intermixed with yellows of golden-alexanders and golden ragwort. These botanical gems come and go quickly and can easily be missed. These perennials grow and quickly die back storing energy underground in roots and tubers waiting for the following spring to begin the cycle again. Seeds of these spring wildflowers are dispersed in many ways, but the association of many with ants carrying them underground is truly awesome!
Insects On warm sunny afternoons common green darners begin to appear in wetlands throughout Cleveland Metroparks. Early in the month they are likely migrants from the south spreading northward on southerly breezes. This well documented behavior is often overlooked. Later in the month the first local dragonfly nymphs begin crawling out of the water to begin their “second” life as aerial hunters of unsuspected insect prey.

LEDGE POOL & RECREATION AREA Splash into summer at Ledge Pool & Recreation Area. Swimming season at Ledge Pool starts May 24 and runs through August 17. Daily pool use fees are $5.50 – adults, $4.50 – children 6 to 11, and free for seniors, 65 & over and children, 5 & under. Paddleboat rentals will be available at Ledge Lake for an additional fee during pool hours.
Learn-to-Swim Programs Water Safety Instructors offer an American Red Cross Learn-toSwim program for preschoolers and beginners to intermediate level swimmers. Classes meet 10 times per session. The fees per session are $40 for season pass holders and $60 for all others. Advanced Sale Program for Organized Groups If your organization would like to spend a day at the pool, Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays are available for groups. Children’s Spring Fishing Derbies FREE! Fishing sessions: Ages 4 to 8 years • 9 a.m. – noon Ages 9 to 15 years • 1 – 4 p.m. Hungry rainbow trout, catfish and a variety of other fish are ready for young anglers to try their luck while competing for prizes. Children can also learn how to cast or test their skills at the casting challenge. Guidance will be available from experienced anglers. Bring a rod, tackle and a cooler with ice to store the “catch of the day.” Bait will be provided and while supplies last, loaner rods will be available for children who do not have their own. Each location will be stocked with rainbow trout and channel catfish prior to the derbies. The event is rain or shine and there is no advanced registration.

Preserving and Protecting Cleveland Metroparks! Cleveland Metroparks Emerald Necklace Endowment Fund was established within The Cleveland Foundation to preserve and protect Cleveland Metroparks. During the past 12 years, more than $2.5 million has been contributed to the Fund and subsequently provided Cleveland Metroparks with approximately $450,000 to reinvest in the Park District.
81st Annual Series of Spring Bird Walks Watch the spring migrants return or travel through to their summer breeding grounds during the 81st Annual Series of Spring Bird Walks. Pro Tip - Make a Plan for a Successful Season! This is the time of the season to make a plan on how you are going to play better golf this year. Start with a list that breaks down your game into areas like: driving, irons, chipping, putting, sand, game management and so on. Rate each area on a scale from 1 – 10 and identify the weakest part of your game. Then break that area down further. Do you have driving as the lowest rated area of your game? Why is your driving bad? – lack of distance, miss too many fairways, slice right, hook left, inconsistent contact. Now make a plan on how you’re going to address those issues. New equipment, more instruction, more practice or playing may be the answer. Figure out a way to measure and track your progress. Stay committed to your plan and reap the benefits as the season goes on.

SKILLS & ADVENTURE Wilderness First Aid Join us for a two-day workshop to learn wilderness first aid skills from experts in the field. Designed specifically for groups and their leaders, the workshop stresses preparedness for first aid emergencies when help is an hour or more away. Classroom lectures and discussions will be combined with hands-on experiences in the field. The curriculum includes assessment and treatment of specific injuries, long term patient care and more. Mock rescues will be practiced in the field allowing participants to practice skills learned in class. Buckeye Trail Section Hike Have you ever been hiking in Cleveland Metroparks and seen a 2” x 6” light blue blaze on the trees? If so you were on the Buckeye Trail, a 1,444 mile trail circumnavigating Ohio. Explore sections of the Buckeye Trail every first Tuesday of the month April – September with a fast paced hike covering 3 – 5 miles. Each hike will end with a demonstration of a backpacking skill. The series will officially conclude with a backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail in October. Join us for one or the entire series. Bring water and dress in layers. Mountain Bike Time Trials Challenge yourself with this off-road time trial. Complete one lap on marked single track at Royalview Trail. Categories will be broken into men, women, beginners, and advanced. Beginner course is about 4.5 miles and advanced course is about 6 miles. Choose to register for one or all three to see if you can improve your time. Awards will be based on the top 2 times overall. (You must compete in at least 2 time trials to qualify for awards). Royalview Rumble Grab a teammate for some off-road fun as Cleveland Metroparks partners with Spin and Second Sole for the Royalview Rumble. Teams of two will compete in a series of trail runs and mountain bike time trials. Night 1: team mountain bike time trial. Night 2: Team running. Night 3: Team bike and run. Team members will compete simultaneously on different trail loops; one short loop, one long loop. Their combined times will determine the night’s and series’ winners. Circle of Wildlife Carousel Opens This Month at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo The wait to experience the new Circle of Wildlife Carousel and Nature Discovery Ridge at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is almost over! A graceful cheetah, a playful baby gorilla and an elegant trumpeter swan will be just a few of the beautiful, hand-carved animals visitors can choose to ride when the carousel is scheduled to open May 30. Sixty-four animals in all have been carved by Mansfield, Ohio-based Carousel Works and installed in a new pavilion in the former Savanna Ridge area at the Zoo. The figures will be grouped together on the carousel according to their natural environment, including African grassland, tropical forest and tundra. The carousel company also created eight custom animals that don’t appear on any other carousel it has built, including an Anatolian shepherd, lynx, tetra, ocelot, lemur, loris, emperor penguin and fossa. The pavilion housing the carousel will feature 12 of the bird tiles that acclaimed artist and designer Viktor Schreckengost originally created for the Zoo’s Birds of the World Building, which stood in the general area of the Zoo where the carousel is now from 1950 until 2004. The Nature Discovery Ridge will engage children’s imaginations and inspire active, creative play through the use of wild habitats and natural elements like rocks, water and trees. Kids will be able to explore, climb, and best of all, have fun reconnecting with nature and letting their imaginations run wild. An observation deck for parents and caregivers will overlook the play area. New restroom facilities, a food concessions area and two new picnic shelters were constructed along with the carousel and play zone to enhance visitors’ experiences. Future plans for this area of the Zoo include building a rentable events center adjacent to the carousel for birthday parties, corporate team-building events, meetings or weddings. Wild Ride at the Zoo Friday, May 9 and Friday, July 25 • 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. Wild Ride at the Zoo, the bicycle safari, is back in 2014 with two more opportunities for cyclists of all ages to experience cruising through the Zoo on their bike. Wild Ride happens after the park closes to regular visitors so cyclists have the paths to themselves. Ride maps point out bike routes around the Zoo for beginning, intermediate and experienced riders. Guests will see the Zoo under their own pedal power as they roll past many of the outdoor animals on exhibit and have chances to meet the animal keepers. Tickets are $12 per person, with a $2 discount for Cleveland Zoological Society members. A signed release form is required for each rider, and a helmet is strongly recommended. Advance sale tickets are available online at clevelandmetroparks.com/zoo along with printable release forms. Riders under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign and deliver the waiver to be admitted. Wild Ride at the Zoo is a rain or shine event. Summer Day Camp is offered for children ages 5 – 14, with a special new half-day Nature Play Camp for kids ages 3 – 4. Multiple summer sessions are offered from June 9 through August 15.
Overnights at the Zoo – All programs run 7 p.m. – 10 a.m. the following morning Would you like to sleep over at the Zoo, hike the park at night, get close to the animals and take a behind-the-scenes tour? Then round up your pack, troop, horde, pride, colony or herd and plan an event they’ll never forget! Sleep out in the Wolf Wilderness cabin during Night Tracks and experience what it would be like to be a scientist for a night, or discover life Down Under in the Zoo’s Australian Adventure during Outback after Dark. African Savanna adventures at Rising Waters Camp run Thursdays through Sundays beginning May 30.
Career Day – 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. High school students are invited to explore the professional fields of animal care, veterinary medicine, education and more during Career Day on May 1 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Students will meet with Zoo staff, see behind-the-scenes, get up-close to small animals and get a glimpse of the real work involved with an exciting zoo career.
Family Discoveries – All programs run 9 – 10:30 a.m. Bring the entire family for a special Zoo experience featuring hands-on activities and guided tours (topics vary by date). This month, discover the Wonderful World of Wolves on May 4 and learn about Exotic Veterinary Care on May 18.
Homeschool programs – Program times vary These fun and interactive programs complement science curriculums for homeschooled students. Kindergarten through third grade students meet from 10 – 11:30 a.m., and students in fourth through eighth grade meet from noon – 1:30 p.m. This month, the program examines Animal Adaptations on May 13.
Preschool Safari – All programs run 10 – 11:30 a.m. Designed for families with children younger than 5, these fun-filled programs engage preschoolers with special hands-on activities and a Get Close animal encounter geared just for them. (Topics vary by date.) Topics in May include African Animals on May 6 and 7, Australian Adventure on May 13 and 14, What’s for Dinner on May 20 and 21 and Animal Care on May 28 and 29.

Bring the family out for a day of fun! This wildly popular annual event is back and better than ever in 2014. We’ll have live animal encounters, crafts, snacks, refreshments and more for every age group. And don’t miss The Great Duck Race! Sponsor a rubber duck to race down Porter Creek and you may win an amazing prize package from the Center. For families with children of all ages.
This program offers activities for girls in grades K – 12 and is a fantastic way for multi-level troops to explore and discover the flora and fauna around the lake. Participants will enjoy hands-on activities that demonstrate how animals and people interact with the lake. Learn about the growing movement of water stewardship and sustainability. Participate in water quality testing to gauge if a body of water is viable for people or fish. Help in a mini-service project with Adopt-a-Beach. And more! Hikes run every hour from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. (please select hike time when registering). Troops may complete all other activities before or after their hikes during the Center’s regular hours (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.). Please allow approximately 2 hours for completion of all activities. Events take place rain or shine. Program patch included. For Girl Scouts of all ages and levels.

Sunday, May 11 • 9 a.m. – noon Here’s your chance to introduce the family to fishing! Learn about the basics at the Center: equipment, how to cast, where to fish and what kind of fish you’ll catch. Then head to Lake Erie to throw your line in the water. All equipment will be provided. This class will be taught by an Ohio Sea Grant Extension Educator. Adults and teens (ages 16+) who wish to fish must possess a valid fishing license. One adult must accompany every 2 children registered for this program. For children ages 5+. Fee: $7/person or $35/family of 5+
Walter R. Schuele Planetarium Family Programs Transformation is in the stars! We are hard at work upgrading the technology, renovating the room and improving the learning experience in our Planetarium! During the month of May, our astronomy-related experiences and programs will take place in our StarLab and/or throughout the Center. Please save the date of Saturday, June 14th to join us for our Grand Reopening and Cosmic Celebration! SkyQuest: Scale of the Universe
Grab your passport, blast off and travel through space to explore a new destination in our solar system. Learn about a different picture in the stars each week and take home a coloring page. Complete your passport and receive a special treat! This program will be available in our StarLab or Exhibit Hall until renovation is complete. For ages 3 – 7. Children should be able to sit for 20-30 minutes.
How big is big? Join us as we take a look at the scale of the Universe. We’ll start with the smallest things we know about and move to the most distant objects in the Universe. How do astronomers measure these vast distances? You’ll find out.

This longer program is for those who want to delve more deeply into astronomy and space topics with our expert staff. This 45-minute program is followed by a look at what’s up in the current night sky. This program will be available in our Grand River Room until renovation is complete. Recommended for pre-teens through adults.
