2 Emerald Necklace November 2016

Note from the Editor: Just because the weather is getting colder, that doesn’t mean you should stay inside! There is much to be thankful in autumn, including the countless opportunities for hiking, biking, birding, fishing and of course, the opening of the toboggan chutes at The Chalet! Inside this issue you will find out more about the wildlife that surrounds us, along with information on the many programs offered throughout the Park District in November.

Inside the

Emerald Necklace

The fall and winter seasons offer some of the Park District’s most stunning views and some of the best opportunities to view wildlife. With the reopening of the Fort Hill Stairs in Rocky River Reservation in late October, park visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the Rocky River after a walk (or run!) up the 155 stairs. There is so much that can be enjoyed from the vantage point of Fort Hill, making it a premiere destination for hikers, birders, runners and walkers alike. In addition to the reopening of the Fort Hill Stairs, park visitors can also enjoy the recently completed Forbes Woods Connector trail in Bedford Reservation. The Forbes Woods Connector includes natural surface trail while incorporating boardwalk and bridge. This immersive trail experience through the woods provides trail users with an improved connection to the all-purpose trail and equestrian trail network on Hawthorne Parkway between Richmond Road and Interstate 271. Increased trail connections can be seen throughout Cleveland Metroparks, including the Mill Creek Connector trail linking Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation to Garfield Park Reservation. This key connector trail creates opportunities to experience the Mill Creek Valley via all-purpose trail. Whether you’re a walker, runner or cyclist, this trail is exciting for every trail user as it crosses Mill Creek via bridge featuring incredible views of the Cuyahoga River valley. The colder months won’t be here forever, so enjoy the Park District throughout every unique season. Whether you would like to get outside for recreation, to view wildlife or just to take in nature, Cleveland Metroparks has a trail or program for you to enjoy. Make sure to visit clevelandmetroparks.com, and download Cleveland Metroparks Trails app to learn more.

NATURALIST’S ALMANAC

November November is the month when wildlife are in prime condition after feasting on summer and early autumn’s bounty. Bucks support polished racks of antlers and a muscular build in preparation of the rut. Waterfowl have new, clean and fresh plumage that may attract a suitable mate for the spring nesting season. Photographers also try their best to capture that perfect image of these birds in their prime before they move south for the winter. Fox, coyotes, beaver, mink and other local mammals have spectacular fur coats that help protect them from the cold, wind and snow of winter. Birds

Insects

Mammals

This month is prime time to seek bird species as cold north winds strip the landscape of the last brilliantly-colored fall leaves. For birders, this is high-time for rarities on the lakefront as strong cold fronts can create awe-inspiring, major movements of waterfowl, gulls, grebes and loons on the shores and lakefront of Lake Erie. Intrepid birders willing to visit Huntington Reservation or Lakefront Reservations can be dazzled by daily movements of thousands to nearly half-a-million red-breasted mergansers joined by throngs of lesser scaup, common loons, and horned grebes. Lake watching offers the chance to see rare jaegers, waterfowl, and passerines blown in by strong winds. Woodlands have now quieted and roving bands of chickadees, titmice, and brown creepers are joined by red-breasted nuthatches. Rare northern finches, such as white-winged crossbill or evening grosbeak, may visit your feeders or join building flocks of local finches at birch, hemlock, and spruce stands.

Depending on daily temperatures and weather conditions you may catch a glimpse of a very late appearance of butterflies, moths, dragonflies and damselflies. The previouslynamed “yellow-legged meadowhawk,” now known as the autumn meadowhawk is a small, ruby-red dragonfly of open fields and woodland edges. This dragonfly is capable of withstanding cold temperatures and feeds on tiny gnats, flies and other minute insects that fly during daylight hours that exceed 35 degrees. Locally there are records of autumn meadowhawks actively foraging on “warmer” days through the end of November - December and into January!

November belongs to the white-tailed deer. Bucks are in prime shape for the rut where they continuously search for females in which to pass on their genes for another generation. Often they may go days without eating as only females are on their mind, oblivious to their surroundings. It is a time to be aware of deer crossing roads and highways as deer-car collisions peak this month.

Dear Humans, Thanks for Your Help!

Coyotes photo by Julie Regula

Conservation efforts typically focus on species that are in peril because of human activity, but what about the other end of the spectrum, the species that are currently thriving because of humans? The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists several familiar species as “least concern” for extinction, including the coyote, white-tailed deer, round goby and zebra mussel. These animals are abundant in and around Cleveland Metroparks, but that was not always the case. The success of these animals in recent years can be attributed to human activity stretching from the first European settlers here all the way to the modern era of global trade, our story intertwining with theirs to produce unintended consequences. When early settlers extirpated the large predators of this area—the wolves, mountain lions and black bear—they fundamentally changed the ecosystem’s predator-prey balance, leaving a gap in the predator category that could be

filled by an opportunist from the western plains – the coyote. The crafty, wily image of coyotes is actually quite accurate: they are experts at quick adaptation and doing what it takes to survive. They have even adapted to urban and suburban habitats, thriving right in our backyards (often literally). Their success in these places can be attributed, in part, to the abundance of meadows and other open areas created by urban sprawl, as these spaces are perfect rodent-hunting grounds. Coyotes are not the only beneficiary of the lack of large predators and human-engineered habitats. As natural browsers of forest edges, white-tailed deer are flourishing in the carved-up patches of forest created by suburbs and developments. These are veritable deer havens, complete with plentiful food in yards, gardens, and forest edges, along with grassy areas and thickets where deer can bed. On the aquatic side, populations of invasive species have exploded in our

lakes and rivers in recent years. When you look down into Lake Erie and see every hard surface caked in a thick layer of zebra mussels, it is clear that this native of the Black and Caspian seas has been doing quite well since its accidental introduction to the Great Lakes in the 1990s. Another Eurasian species, the round goby, is also highly invasive in our waterways, and it feeds (in part) on the zebra mussels! This invasive food chain arrived when large cargo ships from the Black and Caspian seas released ballast water into the St. Lawrence River, the water evidently containing the aquatic invaders. The stories these animals tell us are our stories too, their success piggybacking off of ours. Many more of these fascinating tales await, so read up on the harlequin ladybird, cabbage white butterfly, earthworms, hammerhead worms—the list goes on! Joel Kavaras Naturalist 5

It’s hard to believe I moved to Cleveland almost 20 years ago! However, what is not surprising, is upon graduation from The University of Pittsburgh in 1999 the ease of my transition from Pennsylvania to Ohio. I attribute my successful transition in part to the Cleveland Metroparks Outdoor Recreation programs. My participation in these programs has become such an important part of my life. Since childhood I’ve always had a passion for the outdoors. I grew up in “the sticks” of Western Pennsylvania, and my playground was found in the beauty of the woods. I could always be found outside exploring when I wasn’t in school. My mom, also a lover of the great outdoors, taught me early on how to camp, fish and canoe. Our vacation destinations were always to National Parks across the country. Loaded with our camping gear, stuffed in our tiny car and with our canoe tied to the roof, we were off for yet another adventure. Also active in the Girl Scouts, I could build a fire three different ways and cook breakfast on the bottom of a coffee can before I could drive. It’s no wonder that as soon as I moved to Cleveland at age 22, I was immediately in search of outdoor activities that would offer the opportunity to continue fueling my passion for the outdoors. It did not take long to find exactly what I was looking for. I was elated to find Cleveland Metroparks had exactly what I wanted and continues to offer exceptional programming to stimulate the minds of people seeking to have fun and expand their horizons. I was fortunate to learn how to backpack and kayak early on, and because of my involvement with this great Park District I discovered my passion for teaching, both outdoors and in a traditional classroom setting. Whether active as a participant, instructor or volunteer, I’ve been fortunate to be involved with Cleveland Metroparks Outdoor Recreation. I’m thankful for the opportunity to interact with the great people I’ve met as a result along this peaceful, educational and rewarding journey. If you’re new to the area or a lifelong Clevelander, I encourage you to try a new skill with Cleveland Metroparks Outdoor Recreation this fall. Shannon Bothel, Volunteer

CLEVELAND METROPARKS GOLF

Golf Pro Tip “The importance of alignment for the golf swing.” Most golfers understand the need and importance of being properly aligned in their golf swing, but I still see alignment issues in the majority of golfers I work with. I believe the two main reasons for this include:

1. Golfers fail to constantly check their alignment and eventually set up off target.

2. Golfers have altered their stance and set-up to try and compensate for faults in their swing.

Setting up correctly takes constant checking. I subscribe to the “Railroad Track” type of alignment. When you practice, place an extra golf club or an alignment stick on the ground pointing at your target. You should then aim your clubface right down this target line. Now, place another golf club or alignment stick on the ground parallel to this line. Your body should then set up with shoulders, hips and feet along the line. By having all parts of your body in proper alignment, this will allow your body to work together. The second area is compensating for a swing flaw. For example, golfers that miss their shots to the right tend to try to fix by simply aiming left. While this may cause a short-term correction, it will never fix the problem. Once you aim off your target line you will have to make some adjustments to your swing to get the golf ball where you want it. If you are aiming 20 yards to the left with good swing, you will go 20 yards to the left. To play your best golf, always set up correctly and work to fix whatever swing problem causes your bad shots.
