Highlighting the accomplishments of contributions to Cleveland Metroparks

As we celebrate Cleveland Metroparks 95th anniversary, we are pleased to share some of the Park District’s accomplishments during the past year directly connected to your support, and hope you will take a moment to reflect on the important role you played in Cleveland Metroparks success. Angling for All “When I was younger, I always enjoyed the fishing derby and learned a lot. The volunteer efforts were always a great help when I was stuck. Now I am a bit older and I am returning the favor and helping young children, and sometimes parents, to learn how to fish. I look forward to this derby every year. Thank you for your support.” Ian, age 16 “For years I have gone to the fishing derbies and always had the best time. This past year while I was working the casting challenge a little boy had me teach him how to cast; wouldn’t you know it, he won 1st place! Seeing the smile and happiness on his face just made it all worthwhile. I think this is just the thing every kid needs to experience. I love it and so do all the kids. All the smiles and giggles make the long day worth it no matter what the weather is or time of day.” Brandy, age 14 Fishing has been one of the most popular recreation activities in Cleveland Metroparks, providing sustenance and sport since the Park District’s founding. Donations to the Fishing Fund help to ensure that Cleveland Metroparks provides quality fishing opportunities for the people of northeast Ohio. 2011 fishing fund donations supported fish stocking, habitat enhancements and the popular children’s fishing derbies offered each spring for young anglers.
Volunteers . . . of Service and More In 1917 Cleveland Metroparks was established by its first volunteer – William Stinchcomb. As it begins its 95th year, Cleveland Metroparks now benefits from more than 2,200 volunteers who contributed 57,000 hours to 29 programs in 2011 including outdoor education, trail monitors, golf and natural resources management. Forests of the Future To many people, trees are synonymous with Cleveland Metroparks. Whether it is the white pines of North Chagrin Reservation or the oak and hickory forests in Brecksville Reservation, trees welcome wildlife and visitors alike. Approximately 150 tree species can be found throughout Cleveland Metroparks more than 22,000 acres and significantly vary based on the unique natural attributes of each reservation. More than 140 new trees and 250 native plants and shrubs were planted throughout the Park District in 2011 with the support of Legacy fund donations. These trees and plants are truly the future forests of Cleveland Metroparks. The average life expectancy of street trees in urban areas is 10 to 15 years, but trees in Cleveland Metroparks live from 30 to over 100 years depending on their placement. Specific tree species planted in 2011 included American elm, American hornbeam, autumn brilliance viburnum, black gum, blue spruce, eastern redbud, honey locust, London plane, Norway Spruce, pin oak, Princeton elm, Red Jewel crabapple, red oak, river birch, Rocky Mountain maple, scarlet oak, silver maple, Sugar Tyme crabapple, sugar maple and tuliptree. 2011 Legacy funds also augmented an award from the US Forest Service of 400 American elm seedlings to assist with reforestation in Big Creek Reservation due to ash tree removal caused by emerald ash borer. The elm seedlings planted are a strain that is resistant to Dutch elm disease and expected to reach maturity in approximately 30 years. Legacy funds provided protective wildlife screening to allow the trees to fully mature.

A Special Legacy The Foote family were some of the original settlers of northeast Ohio. After arriving in the Cuyahoga Valley in the early 1800’s, generations of family members lived and farmed the land that is now part of the Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation and Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Clayton B. Foote spent his entire life in the Cuyahoga Valley and treasured the opportunities and experiences he was afforded by growing up, living and working in this unique environment. When Cleveland Metroparks “reclaimed” much of the land along the Cuyahoga River and Ohio & Erie Canal to create the Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation in 1999, Clayton and his family became regular visitors and introduced this special natural oasis to numerous friends and extended family members. In recent years Clayton and his wife Joy shared some of their family history with Cleveland Metroparks historic interpreter Foster Brown who has included this information in programs and songs about the Cuyahoga Valley. After Clayton’s death in 2011, Joy and their children decided that Cleveland Metroparks Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation would be an ideal place to not only celebrate his life, but share his love of the Cuyahoga Valley. Through memorial donations from family and friends, Cleveland Metroparks has reestablished the wildlife garden surrounding the patio of CanalWay Visitor Center and the new wildlife viewing area. This garden includes a water feature and a wide range of native plants to not only attract birds, but share the importance of utilizing native species to park visitors.

Trails for the Future
Cleveland Metroparks Emerald Necklace Endowment Fund was established within The Cleveland Foundation to preserve and protect Cleveland Metroparks. In 2011 funding from the Emerald Necklace Endowment Fund supported the following:
Cleveland Metroparks trail system was part of the Park District’s original plan, and remains one of the region’s greatest assets. Over 270 miles of trails exist throughout the Park District’s more than 22,000 acres. Approximately 70% of park visitors have indicated that trails are the primary reason they visit one of Cleveland Metroparks reservations.
Sycamore Picnic Area – construction of a new reservable picnic shelter in Rocky River Reservation Royalview Trail System – rehabilitation and enhancement of natural trails surrounding the Royalview Picnic Area in Mill Stream Run Reservation Big Met Clubhouse – improvements to terrace to allow year-round use for winter recreation programs including cross country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding as well as better use for golfers in early spring and late fall Personalized proposals for endowment gifts to support programs or locations within Cleveland Metroparks are available by contacting Karen Kannenberg at 216-635-3217 or kjk@clevelandmetroparks. During the past year, Cleveland Metroparks began analyzing its trail system to determine the best way to minimize natural resource impact and maintenance while maximizing user enjoyment. As a result, Cleveland Metroparks has begun rehabilitating the trails surrounding the Royalview Picnic Area in Mill Stream Run Reservation through funding from its Emerald Necklace Endowment Fund and will subsequently expand its trail renovation efforts throughout the Park District in the coming years, including trails suitable for mountain bikes. To further its upcoming trail rehabilitation, Cleveland Metroparks established a Trails Fund in 2011 through leadership gifts from the Cleveland West Road Runners Club, Cleveland Area Mountain Bike Association, Ray’s Indoor Mountain Bike Park, and Spin Bike Shop. Contributions to the Trails Fund will support all aspects of trail rehabilitation.
