Cleveland Metroparks is a beautiful and diverse green space devoted to conservation, education and outdoor recreation. Called the “Emerald Necklace” because it majestically encircles the City of Cleveland, the Park District offers a wide array of facilities, wildlife areas, outdoor education programs, and opportunities for recreation from golfing, hiking and swimming, to kayaking, tobogganing and birding.
While the Park District is committed to taking care of existing resources within Cleveland Metroparks, we are also looking to the future. Bridges, buildings, picnic shelters and trails will be rehabilitated as necessary - as well as providing new opportunities for open space protection.
Cleveland Metroparks was established on July 23, 1917 to provide open space for the people of Greater Cleveland, as well as to preserve the wonders of the natural landscape. Today, the Park District consists of more than 22,000 acres in 16 reservations and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

Cleveland Metroparks tax district includes Cuyahoga County and Hinckley Township in Medina County. The Park District also owns land in Lake, Lorain and Summit counties. Reservations are open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Some facilities, including Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, nature centers, golf courses and the Chalet Recreation Area, offer seasonal and holiday hours and may have admission fees.

All Purpose Trails
Paved all purpose trails are available for walking, running, cycling, and in-line skating. Motorized vehicles are prohibited on all purpose trails. The trails are ideally suited for wheelchairs, walkers and strollers. LifeTrail LifeTrail is a series of outdoor wellness stations specifically designed for active older adults. The nine stations are designed to turn a normal walking routine into a more complex lowimpact body workout. Located at Red Oak Picnic Area in Garfield Park Reservation. Solar System Walk Walk along a path that illustrates scale representations of the distance between the sun and planets in our solar system. Located at South Mastick Picnic Area in Rocky River Reservation. Physical Fitness Trails Physical fitness trails feature 18 stations, providing a complete workout with illustrated instructions along 1- to 1.5-mile paths. Physical fitness trails are located in Bedford, Big Creek, Brecksville, Euclid Creek, Mill Stream Run, North Chagrin, Rocky River, and South Chagrin reservations.

5 Natural Surface Trails
Natural surface trails are unpaved trails. Hikers are welcome on all natural surface trails. Hiking Trails Hundreds of miles of hiking trails cross the over 22,000 acres of Cleveland Metroparks. Trails exist in every reservation with a variety of vistas and terrains. Mountain biking and motorized vehicles are prohibited on hiking trails. Bridle Trails There are nearly 82 miles of trails available for equestrian use. Horseback riders must stay on the bridle trails and attend their horses at all times. Mountain biking is not permitted on the bridle trails. Mountain Bike Trail Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation has a short loop of about 1/2 mile for beginners with minimal mountain biking skills and a longer loop with some steep terrain for the more experienced intermediate rider. Royalview Trail Located in Mill Stream Run Reservation, Royalview Trail is a mountain bike trail consisting of two loops totaling 9 miles of beginner to intermediate level single track trails. Walking Works Explore new trails with Cleveland Metroparks Walking Works Program. From June through October, hike at least eight of 13 designated trails on your own - any time. It’s fun and easy. After completing each walk, date your Walking Works form. Complete eight walks and return your form to Cleveland Metroparks to receive this year’s Walking Works shield. Rent a rowboat, electric motor boat, canoe, kayak, stand up paddleboard, pontoon boat or a paddleboat. Stock up on Cleveland Metroparks logo items, refreshments, fishing tackle and live bait.
May be used by nonmotorized boats (canoes, rowboats, etc.) Or, rent a paddleboat or kayak at Quarry Rock Cafe. Quarry Rock Cafe also offers refreshments to park visitors during the swim season (June through mid-August).
Cleveland Metroparks reminds boaters to have proper operating licenses and to use Coast Guard-approved life jackets and other mandatory safety equipment.
7 Fishing Enjoy year-round fishing in Cleveland Metroparks and hook species such as steelhead trout and panfish in the rivers, lakes, ponds and access to Lake Erie. Area waters are supplemented with seasonal fish stocking. An Ohio fishing license is required for anglers ages 16 and older. Fishing clinics, derbies, group programs (including the use of fishing equipment) also offered.

Picnic Areas
Cleveland Metroparks maintains more than 80 picnic areas and shelters, complete with tables and grills. Many picnic areas also feature play areas, restrooms and other amenities. Most areas are available on a non-exclusive, shared-use basis. Cleveland Metroparks also offers a limited number of group picnic areas that can be reserved for exclusive use. Reservation requests are accepted up to one year prior to date of use by calling 216-635-3200, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing
Cross country skiing and snowshoeing are permitted on hiking, bridle and all purpose trails (that have not been plowed), as well as the fairways and rough areas of Big Met, Little Met, Shawnee Hills, Seneca, Mastick Woods, Washington and Sleepy Hollow golf courses (with a four-inch snow base on golf course). 9 Chalet Recreation Area Discover Cleveland Metroparks recreation hotspot nestled
in the natural beauty of Mill Stream Run Reservation. The Chalet Recreation Area is the place to be for recreational and social opportunities. It’s an ideal location to gather with family and friends, or for business get-togethers year-round, for reserved group picnics, fall hayrides, and the popular tobogganing outings.

Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons in October For a nominal fee, experience breathtaking fall colors and crisp fall air while enjoying some old-fashioned fun at the Fall Hayrides on October weekends. Square dancing can also be enjoyed all weekend and Sunday afternoons include family entertainment. Haywagons can also be rented for private group outings at the facility. Horse-drawn rides are also scheduled on select days.
Twin refrigerated ice chutes operate with or without snow the day after Thanksgiving through mid-March, weather permitting, guaranteeing a day of fun for families and groups on Northeast Ohio’s ultimate winter thrill ride. Guests can take a break from tobogganing at Ohio’s only public ice chutes and enjoy the indoor facility featuring two fireplaces, a main gathering room with a large-screen television, a loft area with video games, a concession stand, and indoor restrooms. Tobogganing can be enjoyed Thursday (January and February only), Friday and Saturday evenings, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons (with special extended hours during the holidays). Log onto clevelandmetroparks.com for an up-to-date schedule. A daily admission fee, group discounts or season passes bring you unlimited rides down the chutes. One-time ride tickets are also available. Gloves or mittens are required. Children must be at least 42 inches tall to ride and be accompanied by an adult. Private rental of the Chalet, including exclusive use of the toboggan chutes is also available during non-public hours. The Chalet Recreation Area can be reserved for a nominal fee for picnics, company outings, family gatherings and other functions during the spring, summer and early fall. Golfers have enjoyed Cleveland Metroparks beautiful and challenging golf courses for over 80 years. The eight courses, located conveniently throughout Greater Cleveland, offer golfers of all ages 144 holes of recreational activity, from the sporting par 3 at Shawnee Hills for novice linksters to championship layouts at Manakiki and Sleepy Hollow for advanced golfers. The golf season begins mid-March and continues through December, weather permitting. The courses are open daily from dawn to dusk. Outings, tournaments, special events, clinics, lessons, leagues, and cart and club rentals are also available. Driving ranges are located at Sleepy Hollow, Shawnee Hills and Washington golf courses.

GOLF 11 Academy of Golf
Cleveland Metroparks Academy of Golf provides a variety of high-quality learning opportunities in a structured and comfortable environment where golfers of all skill levels can learn golf skills, traditions, rules and etiquette, and improve their knowledge and enjoyment of the game. Classes range from beginners, with Introduction to Golf, to Master the Game classes for advanced players. Courses are taught by Cleveland Metroparks own PGA/LPGA Professionals. Class sizes are generally small, to allow for more personal attention. Players can enhance their swings using videotape analysis or be outfitted with everything they need to get started, from clubs to golf bags. In addition to Academy of Golf classes, Cleveland Metroparks golf pros can also assist players’ golf games through private lessons, to learn independently of others, or to just enhance their skills. Junior Golf Programs
Junior Golf programs are available for young golfers, ages 6 to 17. These programs are available to cultivate future golfers of tomorrow, while encouraging integrity and sportsmanship. The Junior Programs include: Golf Day Camp - a week long total golf experience for ages 8-17. Junior Clinics - golf instructional classes for young golfers that focus on the basic fundamentals of the full swing, pitching, chipping, putting, rules and etiquette. Junior Golf Leagues - ranging from pee wee (ages 6 to 9) to advanced junior leagues (ages 10 to 17); even Little Birdie instructional classes for children, ages 3-5. Special golf days and tournaments throughout the golf season allow youth to play the game among their peers as well as with adults and mentors.
Clubs for Kids program offers used clubs to new junior golfers. The clubs are cleaned, cut to size and re-gripped to fit the individual. Clubs are sold at minimal prices, and are great starter clubs for future golf champs!
Golf Special Events
Cleveland Metroparks hosts a wide variety of special events at all eight golf courses. These include competitive events such as scrambles and better ball tournaments as a spring and fall series, father/son and father/daughter events, and the annual Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship, Seniors Amateur Championship and Women’s Amateur Championship. A Moonlight Golf series gives golfers the opportunity to golf at night with lighted tees and greens and glowing golf balls. Golf Tee Time Reservations – 24/7!
Golfers can play Cleveland Metroparks eight courses from dawn to dusk mid-March through December, and now they can make tee reservations 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week! Call 216-635-3673 (FORE) and reserve a tee time at any Cleveland Metroparks course. Tee reservations can be made 12 days in advance (starting at noon) and only by phone for the first hour of availability. The call is free. Youth Outdoors - A partnership between Cleveland Metroparks, Ohio State University Extension 4-H and the City of Cleveland, Youth Outdoors offers urban youth, ages 8 to 18, the opportunity to experience outdoor adventure. Activities include hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, camping, nature exploration and service projects. Youth gain valuable life skills and an appreciation of the natural environment. NatureTracks/Eco Explorers
NatureTracks features a mobile classroom designed to expand the visitor’s knowledge of nature through interactive learning. Applying current technology, NatureTracks staff delivers a series of innovative, environmental education programs to urban schools, youth groups, recreation and senior centers, and special events throughout the Greater Cleveland area. A new outreach program, Eco Explorers powered by PNC, is specifically designed for students ages 5 - 6.
Eco Explorers offers four unique programs to supplement preschool and kindergarten science curriculums based on Ohio’s Early Learning Standards. Utilizing the Eco Explorers powered by PNC vehicle and outdoor space, students engage in natural discoveries.
Reservations for both programs are taken up to three months in advance. To schedule a visit, call 216-341-1707 at least three weeks in advance.
Historical Interpretation
Historical programs make lasting connections to the days of old by vividly bringing the past alive through characters, storytelling, songs and interactive activities. Paddling the giant 34-foot Voyageur Canoe is a popular warm-weather program for individuals, families and groups. Other programs include Digger Gallagher the Canaler, Doctor Wildweed, Folk Strings, the Quarryman, Serge the Voyageur and Steely Dan the Iron Man. This fun-filled, half-day adventure for all ages takes you on a self-led audio tour of Cleveland Metroparks. African Elephant Crossing The Zoo’s newest exhibit is a $25 million commitment to the care and conservation of the world’s largest land animal. It is also a compelling visitor experience, designed to connect people emotionally to these majestic animals.

Opened to the public in 2011, the five-acre, state-ofthe-art exhibit builds on the Zoo’s long tradition of elephant care.
The elephants share the exhibit with several other African species including meerkats, naked mole rats, nine different species of birds and an African rock python.

The RainForest features more than 600 animals from the jungles of the world, including otters, bats, and a troop of orangutans. This unique two-level indoor exhibit is one of the largest of its kind in the country. Guests are immersed in the tropics the moment they enter and encounter the 25-foot high Jungle Cascade waterfall. Explore thousands of medicinal plants along the Medicine Trail and visit an authentic Researcher’s Hut.
Cleveland Metroparks ZOO 17 Australian Adventure is a fascinating eight-acre exhibit that teaches children of all ages about Australia’s wildlife and culture. Guests can wander through a mob of free-roaming kangaroos in Wallaby Walkabout and get close to sheep, goats and other farm animals in the Contact Yard. Feed colorful lorikeets in the Lorikeet Aviary and visit GumLeaf Hideout, home to koalas, tree kangaroos and echidnas. Northern Trek is home to cold climate animals, including six bear species, Amur tigers, reindeer, Bactrian camels, harbor seals and sea lions. View our pack of wolves from the cozy confines of Wolf Lodge, part of the award-winning Wolf Wilderness exhibit. The Primate, Cat & Aquatics Building features cheetahs, a rare fossa and a diverse collection of primate species. See more than 30 different displays of salt and freshwater life including sharks, piranhas, octopus and living coral.
Go on safari through the African Savanna. Visit the grassy plains where lions, giraffes, zebras, gazelles and ostriches roam. Discover a colony of colobus monkeys on Monkey Island and see a Persian leopard and black rhinos nearby. Most animals can be viewed year-round either in their outdoor exhibits or through viewing windows into their winter quarters. Be sure to stop by The Sarah Allison Steffee Center for Zoological Medicine, the Zoo’s state-of-the-art medical facility and research center, located in African Savanna. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is the first zoo in the world with an on-site CT Scanner. Guests can get a glimpse of the scanner, as well as surgical and treatment rooms, through viewing windows. A visit to the adjoining Reinberger Learning Lab education pavilion offers plenty of hands-on activities. The Zoo is an ideal location for your special event. Zoo Events The Zoo offers great events year round featuring amazing animals, education opportunities and, of course, family fun. On Mother’s Day, all moms receive half-price admission and can enjoy special activities planned just for them. Father’s Day offers half-price admission for dads. Two Senior Safaris take place each year, one in June and another in August. Everyone age 55 and older receives free admission, and can enjoy entertainment and numerous health and wellness exhibits. Watch out for the ghouls and goblins that arrive every October during Boo at the Zoo. Ranked in USA Today as one of the “Top Ten Places in the Nation for Family Halloween Fun,” Boo is designed for young visitors. Roam the Zoo at night and enjoy lots of entertainment, music, activities and, of course, the Zoo’s animals. On Thanksgiving Day, admission to the Zoo is free for all visitors. Special feeding times for animals and Meet-the-Keeper opportunities make it a great day at the Zoo.

Enjoy the Park District and all the great free events! Cleveland Metroparks hosts many free, family-friendly and entertaining special events throughout the Park District each year. Everyone can enjoy the great outdoors at a variety of fun special events in a wide range of locations. Visitors of all ages have opportunities to explore new park reservations or areas, discover and learn new nature-related wonders, and play, enjoy and sample the best of what Cleveland Metroparks has to offer.
Park events include the sweet taste of maple sugaring, children’s fishing derbies, experiencing all things trains, exploring the park after dark and even the wonderful world of bugs - why they’re needed and even what they taste like. Some of the other events feature the celebration of spring and earth’s reawakening, to an event just for “knee-highs” - kids, ages 2 to 6, - a beach party ending with a movie on the beach, to an event for man’s best friend and a folk festival with great music, pioneer days and a day of outdoor recreation and exploration for youth.
Cleveland Metroparks Kids Club Kids, ages 12 and under, can enjoy activities, exploration and fun experiences year-round in Cleveland Metroparks and the Zoo! Cleveland Metroparks Kids Club brings kids closer to nature by sharing with them the importance of conservation, education and recreation. Kids can apply what they learn to help preserve Cleveland Metroparks and the environment. Kids Club members receive a Passport and throughout the year, Cleveland Metroparks and the Zoo offer special events, programming and other activities for kids to earn stickers for their passports. Volunteers are making the difference in Cleveland Metroparks! The Park District offers diverse volunteer opportunities to individuals 16 years and older at various locations throughout the Park District. Opportunities are also available for student and community service projects. Explore the activities below to discover if there is an opportunity that interests you! Cleveland Metroparks Rangers
Cleveland Metroparks Ranger Department is the law enforcement branch of the Park District. Since the department was established in 1921, the department’s primary objective is to provide a safe and accessible environment for Park District visitors.
Cleveland Metroparks rangers are state- certified law enforcement officers who exercise full police powers in the commission of their duties. Rangers are available and on patrol 24 hours-a-day, year round. Rangers also provide other services to the community. They are seen at area festivals and events conducting youth fingerprinting, demonstrating bike safety, reviewing water safety, and explaining specialty functions such as the Detective Bureau, Dive Team, Mounted and K-9 Units. Safety Tips: • Carry a cell phone in case of any emergency. • If it’s necessary to call for help, be able to relay an exact location by knowing the nearest Park District area, intersection or landmark. • If jogging along the parkway at dusk or dawn hours wear bright clothing or a reflective vest. • Keep close visual contact with children at all times, especially if a roadway or body of water is nearby. • Lock any and all valuables in the trunk before entering the Park District.
