Cleveland Metroparks Volunteer Sandy Emery
How did you get involved with Cleveland Metroparks?
In 1999 Sandy decided to consider the zoo for stress relief and to do something she felt she would enjoy. She attended the Volunteer Safari to learn about volunteering, interviewed and was accepted to participate in training. Later that year, Sandy was accepted into the 9-week docent training program and successfully started as a docent at the end of 1999. Sandy shares, “At first volunteering at the zoo was my getaway from everything going on, but over time it has truly grown into a passion!”
Sandy participates in both service and docent volunteer activities. She enjoys assisting with animal care in both capacities and also serves as a service volunteer mentor to new volunteers. Considering service activities, Sandy enjoys the information booth the most. She says, “I love to people watch and talk with the visitors. I ask them where they are from and share information about the Zoo.” As a docent, Sandy’s favorite activity is her opportunity to interact with and teach guests through “Get Close” programs. During these programs Sandy handles a live education animal and shares valuable information about the animal’s natural history. Most memorable volunteer moments
One of Sandy’s most memorable moments occurred during a Senior Safari event at the Zoo while Sandy was handling an armadillo as part of a Get Close program. Sandy recalls, “Coming toward me was an older blind woman who was being lead by her family. I told her that I was holding an armadillo. I found out that she did have her sight at some point, so she could understand some references. During the time we interacted we discovered the armadillo together as she touched and experienced as I explained different characteristics so she could “see” the animal in front of her.”
Why do you volunteer?
Sandy has a passion for volunteering at the Zoo! Sandy shares, “I enjoy the people we serve and I like knowing that I made the day a little easier for staff. Making a difference makes me happy and that is what I feel I do at the Zoo!” In addition to volunteering, Sandy enjoys arts and crafts, sewing and scrapbooking. She and her husband, Bob, have two children and five grandchildren. Comments from Program/Site Staff
Lynn Charles, Manager of Zoo Volunteer Services and Jenna Senol, Zoo Volunteer Services Assistant truly appreciate Sandy’s involvement and service. Lynn shares, “Whether posting on Zoo grounds, working late nights/weekends at special events, animal care, personal time to support the Zoo’s effort of “zero waste tolerance”, assisting with fundraising for The Carousel, baking, crafting animal design jewelry, coordinating a Zoo-wide bake sale, or sewing and patching up Zoo uniforms for all divisions, it is probably Sandy Emery!” Jenna comments, “Sandy Emery is a leader by example, she inspires volunteers by her actions and encourages them to be the best they can be. Sandy brings fun to the volunteer program with her positive attitude and very contagious laugh.”

Cleveland Metroparks Volunteer Services 2013 was quite the year for Cleveland Metroparks and Cleveland Metroparks Volunteer Services! The organization was recognized and accredited through The Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and also received amazing community support for Issue 80! In addition, Cleveland Metroparks Volunteer Services experienced changes as Park District and Zoo Volunteer Services merged in May 2013. Thanks to all volunteers for your patience and cooperation with these changes! During 2013, more than 350 new volunteers joined the volunteer corps to ensure that the nature centers, shops, programs, projects, golf courses, surveys, activities, events and Zoo were staffed and that visitors had positive experiences. In the coming months, look for the 2013 Volunteer Services Annual Report which will include a summary of all of last year’s volunteer activity and successes! In 2014, plans are in place to upgrade the volunteer database, increase the number of active youth volunteers and revise and expand the volunteer-only website resource page! Look for updates about these and other program upgrades in future emails and newsletters! Thanks to each of you for the precious gift of your time! All your efforts and services to the Park District and the Zoo are greatly appreciated. Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy 2014!

Golf Services Cleveland Metroparks eight golf courses offer a variety of volunteer opportunities ranging from merchandising the pro shops with new golf apparel and hard goods, to working with junior golfers participating in league play, or even helping with concession and catering events! Volunteer rangers monitor the pace of play and ensure golfers enjoy their round at Cleveland Metroparks. If you enjoy the game of golf consider volunteering at a Cleveland Metroparks golf course.
Outdoor Recreation Cleveland Metroparks Outdoor Recreation connects people to nature and promotes community health and well being for all ages and abilities. Year round activities include GPS, kayaking, snowshoeing, fishing, stand up paddleboarding and more. Trail Ambassadors Since 2005, Cleveland Metroparks and its visitors have benefitted from the service of Trail Monitor volunteers. These volunteers monitor Park District trails to interact with visitors, alert management crews to any hazardous situations and be first responders in emergencies on the trails. In 2013, a pilot program called the Urban Beach Ambassadors was developed, thanks to a start up grant from The Cleveland Foundation, to monitor the newly acquired Lakefront properties, with a focus on the beaches. In 2013, 185 Trail Monitor and Urban Beach Ambassador volunteers donated over 8,800 hours to monitoring designated trails in 16 Cleveland Metroparks reservations.
Due to similar purposes, the Trail Monitor and Urban Beach Ambassador programs will merge starting in 2014! The newly named “Trail Ambassador” program will ensure that all Cleveland Metroparks properties, including some of the Lakefront properties, will be monitored by volunteers. The purpose of the volunteers remains the same, their reach is just expanded! All new volunteers attend Trail Ambassador training and First Aid/ CPR certification in April. The summer season begins with a Kickoff Reception that brings together returning and new volunteers. In 2014, individuals, age 30 and older, are invited to participate in this fun and rewarding volunteer activity. Applications will be accepted through February 14th. A limited number of spaces are available for this activity.

Trails Division In April of 2012 the trails division was added to maintain and create the paths that make up the framework of the Park District. The focus of this past year has been on the creation of a new mountain bike and hiking trail in Bedford Reservation. A dedicated group of trail volunteers have already cut close to 10 miles of brand new trail that will give mountain bikers more options of where to go in Cleveland Metroparks after the success of Royalview’s mountain bike trail (in Mill Stream Run Reservation). The volunteer aspect of the trails division has grown since its creation and there are currently more than 50 registered volunteers, a number that continues to grow as the program expands. Although the trailbuilding season is closed for the winter, visitors can meander further through the changing seasons thanks to last year’s efforts of the trails crew and their volunteers.
Watershed Stewardship Center The Watershed Stewardship Center (WSC) in West Creek Reservation opened on June 21, 2013. This one-of-a-kind facility is the result of a unique partnership between Cleveland Metroparks, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, and the West Creek Conservancy. The mission of the WSC is to enhance and protect the health of our urban watersheds through scientific discovery, active

Whether dispensing maps, other handouts, general information or just a smile, Service volunteers enhance a guests’ Zoo experience. Docent Volunteer Docent volunteers receive additional training and act as informal educators. Docent volunteers complement the education division by teaching Connections to Africa programs, providing “Get Close” experiences on grounds, and educating visitors through interpretive posting at the Zoo’s major exhibits. Only volunteers who have completed the zoo-specific volunteer training may participate as a service volunteer which paves the
