North Devon has its own unique character, with the rugged beauty of Exmoor National Park, a perfect location for hiking or mountain biking, to golden sand beaches and excellent surf. It is also home to many stately homes, with their glorious grounds, through to the steep cobbled street and deep blue harbour in the timeless village of Clovelly.

The county of Devon offers something for all ages, all year round. In fact, one of the hardest decisions you will have to make about your trip to this diverse county is where to go first! In addition to beautiful golden beaches and stunning scenery, we are blessed with rustic villages and towns, historic buildings and two National Parks. Devon is proud to boast no less than 5 areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO Geopark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and two National Parks. Possibly the most famous of which is Dartmoor with over 350 square miles to explore. The famous historic cities of Plymouth, where Sir Francis Drake set sail to circumnavigate the globe in 1577, and Exeter, where parts of the Roman Wall still remain, are both full of excitement and entertainment. Couple this with some superb shopping from main high street retailers to independent shops and boutiques, they are a must for the whole family.
With so much to offer, you’ll be spoilt for choice wherever you decide to go; however, no trip would be complete without a traditional Devon Cream Tea and a healthy debate about whether the jam or clotted cream goes on first!

Plymouth is home to many attractions including the National Marine Aquarium, the UK’s biggest aquarium, Theatre Royal Plymouth and Plymouth Pavilions, Ski Slope and Snowboard Centre and Dartmoor Zoo, which inspired the making of the Hollywood blockbuster - ‘We Bought a Zoo’. The Barbican and Sutton Harbour is one of Plymouth’s most popular places to visit, with quaint cobbled streets, a picturesque harbour and a wealth of independent shops, galleries, bars, cafes and restaurants along the water’s edge creating a metropolitan feel. It’s also home to the Elizabethan House as well as the Mayflower Steps where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail on their voyage to the New World in 1620. Plymouth Hoe is where Sir Francis Drake is renowned to have played his last game of bowls before his sailing voyage to engage with the Spanish Armada. Also home to the iconic Smeaton’s Tower, Tinside Lido, Royal Citadel and the city’s war memorials, the Hoe is a large open space with jaw- dropping views. Take a trip to the Royal William Yard, which was designed by Victorian architect Sir John Rennie and constructed between 1825 and 1831. The Yard is considered to be one of the most important groups of historic military buildings in Britain; it is also the largest collection of Grade 1 listed military buildings in Europe. Stroll around the Yard and take in the atmosphere and imposing buildings as well as stop off at one of the many eateries for a spot of lunch, afternoon tea or dinner.

Devon’s environment has something to offer throughout the year, indeed many sites are best visited out of season. Nothing can beat an exhilarating cliff top walk on a blustery winter’s day, the vivid autumn colours as you stroll through woodlands or the activity in the estuaries, teeming with migrating and wintering birds. Our heaths and moorlands take on their own unique beauty during the winter months and the stunning displays of spring flowers such as wild daffodils and bluebells are simply breath-taking. Devon provides endless opportunities for all ages and abilities to get out and active. Leave the car at home and use the integrated bus and train network to access multi-use routes, ideal for safe and easy walking or cycling. A number of accessible trails are suitable for families with young children and pushchairs or the elderly and those who use wheelchairs. So why not take a week’s holiday to walk a section of the South West Coast Path or cross the County from north to south coast along the Two Moors Way? Or take a day out with a leisurely cycle ride around the Exe Estuary or for the more active go mountain biking in the Tamar Valley. For those who enjoy wildlife Devon has an abundance and variety that few other parts of Britain can rival. From wintering avocets to
Dartford Warblers and cirl buntings, even the most enthusiastic bird watcher will find something to excite. Our landscape also tells a fascinating story, don’t miss the Jurassic Coast in East Devon, Slapton Ley in the South Hams, the towering cliffs of the Hartland coastline or the awesome granite tors strewn across Dartmoor, to see geology in action! 9
So why not explore more at www.exploredevon.info new routes are being added all the time! 1.East Devon by Jenny Bowden 2. Cliff Path near Kingswear 3. Kayaking, River Torridge 4. Seaton Tramway 5. DEVON / SOMERSET BORDER
The
ExmoorCoastline
Exmoor National Park, partly in North Devon and partly in Somerset, has an amazing variety of landscapes encompassing high cliffs that plunge down to the sea, gorse and heather covered moorland, ancient woodlands, valleys and rivers.
Theo Molenaar www.theomolenaar.nl
The coastline within the National Park stretches for 37 miles and ranks amongst the most scenic, unspoilt and best protected stretches of coastline in the country. At the highest point it rises to 1421 feet at Culbone Hill. At Great Hangman near Combe Martin the cliff plunges 800 feet to the sea below and is the highest sea cliff in England and Wales. England’s longest national trail The South West Coast Path starts at Minehead and passes first of all through the Exmoor section of the coastline on its 630 mile route to its finish at Poole Harbour. This initial part of the coast path encompasses some wonderful locations, rising up from Minehead over North Hill with its wild ponies and heather clad moorland landscape it drops down to the pretty village of Porlock, then over marshland to Porlock Weir harbour. From there it climbs again through ancient woodland, passing the small and totally remote church at Culbone, then along paths winding in and out of wooded valleys interspersed by breathtaking views when the path climbs to the high ground, only to descend again to the picturesque village of Lynmouth, scene of a disastrous flood in 1952. This is linked to the town of Lynton high above by a unique Victorian water powered cliff railway. The path continues from Lynton passing through the Valley of Rocks with its wild goats, then climbing and plunging down through deep combes to its final destination within Exmoor at the village of Combe Martin, with its history of silver mining and of smuggling in the Bristol Channel. A walk on the coastpath will give opportunities for nature lovers to see a wide variety of plants and wildlife, and the elusive red deer can often be seen.
The Yarn Market Hotel in Dunster is an ideal location for its close proximity to the coastline at Dunster beach and the start of the South West Coast Path at Minehead. Starting at Easter 2016 the hotel will be running coast path walking breaks in 3 sections, starting with Minehead to Combe Martin, followed by Combe Martin to Bideford, and the last and challenging stretch from Bideford to Bude. Each walking holiday is for 5 or 6 nights and includes all meals, guiding and transport to and from each walk each day, so please contact the hotel for more information.
The Yarn Market Hotel also runs a number of other walking breaks during the year and regularly welcomes walking groups as well. For those that simply want to spend a few days sampling the delights of Exmoor the hotel is happy to provide a guide for their coach or arrange minibus transport for those wishing to park up and forget their car.
