I am very happy and pleased to introduce the 14 2014 Tourism Association Visitor Guide. 15 Visitors are hugely important in the prosperity of North Yorkshire and I know anyone who visits will be treated to some great hospitality and some truly magnificent scenery. Add to this in 2014 the Tour de France ‘Grand Départ’ and the region’s superb cycling opportunities including the unique Dalby Forest Trails on the edge of the North York Moors and the reasons to visit become more and more compelling. The local business people who produce this guide and its complimentary web site www.visityorkshire.com work hard within their businesses and within their Association to do all they can to provide a great customer experience in North Yorkshire. They welcome anyone who has a love of the countryside and who wants to get the most from their holiday experience and are very happy to help plan a great stay. Just ask one! Thanks for reading and have a wonderful time. Don’t forget to enter the competition and next time you come and stay it could be FREE! Anne McIntosh Member of Parliament of Thirsk, Malton and Filey

market towns North Yorkshire is home to a diversity of historic market towns each as unique as the charter granted, the earliest of which was in the 12th century. They share a common purpose and meet the same needs of their communities as they have done over the centuries. People in farming and rural communities did not travel like people today. Their lives revolved around the village or hamlet near where they worked. Early markets were held after church on Sundays the time when people got together. Soon the hamlets became villages others became towns and more formal markets were established. As vibrant modern service centre hubs, the market towns provide an important focus today for employment, goods and services, and leisure and community facilities. For the visitor the market towns of North Yorkshire provide an insight into life in rural England and a great place to shop and discover some great bargains!

home of cycling Yorkshire is now widely regarded as the spiritual centre of English cycling having been involved in the development of road racing and time trialling from the earliest days. It has played a part in the various events of the modern day Tour of Britain and has been involved in the British Men’s Road Championships more than a dozen times and prestigious regional races. The UCI Cross Country Mountain Bike World Cup at Dalby Forest and the National Road Race Championship at Ampleforth Abbey are two more popular events but surely the jewel in the crown in 2014 is the Grand Départ, effectively the start of the Tour de France. So with its endless country roads, challenging hills, sweeping descents and views to take your breath away it’s no surprise that Yorkshire is rapidly becoming the accepted home of English if not UK cycling. Come and try it for yourself, we can always hire you a bike!

Did you Know? It will be the first time the Tour de France has visited the north of England having previously only made visits to the south coast and London. July 5th, stage one - Leeds to Harrogate July 6th, stage two - York to Sheffield

history & heritage North Yorkshire has an undoubted richness of history and heritage. From early Christian waymark crosses on the North York Moors, to ruined abbeys, historic industrial workings, stately homes, churches, chapels and... well we could go on but you are probably starting to get the picture by now. It is nearly impossible to travel across North Yorkshire without becoming inspired by legacy that time has left. Castles with moats and ramparts, thatched cottages seemingly untouched in centuries, bridges and stately homes combine with stunning backdrops to reveal life as it was lived in days gone by. Industrial heritage is exemplified by the Lime Kilns in Rosedale. The fishing villages and towns along the historic coastline, even Fylingdales early warning station on the edge of the moors has its place in time comprising part of this regions unique history and heritage. But be careful! Travel too fast and you’ll miss it. Linger a while and soak up the heritage that belongs to us all. Better still take a walk, a cycle ride, a river cruise or a horse ride and experience the heritage today as it was built for yesterday.

north york moors national park

Covering nearly one eighth of England, Yorkshire is home to two National Parks and part of another, the only County in England to boast such an exceptional fact. North Yorkshire hosts the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks, two areas of spectacularly different scenery but sharing a common theme of preserving the region’s natural and built history and heritage. Conservation, preservation and recreation are the National Park’s watch words but don’t think for a minute though that the National Parks are just about the ‘old days’. Both National Parks are ever increasingly becoming home to niche crafts and industries like bee keeping, brewing, glass blowing, game keeping, cheese making and so much more. The villages and towns in the Parks are crafted from local stone with pantiled roofs mellowed with time and narrow country lanes draw you down to visit places that time forgot. Can you really miss all this?

yorkshire coast & countryside Vibrant resort towns, award winning sandy beaches, dramatic headlands and picture postcard fishing villages are just some of the reasons why the North Yorkshire coast is one of England’s most popular seaside destinations. Here you can also walk in the footsteps of dinosaurs as the striking rocks along this coast are rich with fossils from the Jurassic period. A lively year-round programme of festivals complements the comedies and plays on offer at the Stephen Joseph Theatre where Alan Ayckbourn’s new plays are always premiered. Tuck into delicious fish and chips while discovering Whitby’s connection to Bram Stoker’s Dracula and sea-faring adventurers - Captain Cook set sail from here! Whitby Abbey is a must see too, with breathtaking views along the coast, while for family fun, Filey is hard to beat with five miles of sandy beach, rock pools and sheltered waters. Diverse is probably the best word to describe the North Yorkshire countryside. Forests, rolling dales, huge expanses of purple moorland heather, chalk uplands, fields of yellow oil seed rape and linseed blue, all this can be found in North Yorkshire. Dramatic rock outcrops punctuate where farmland meets moorland and birds like lapwings, curlews and buzzards populate the skies. Driving, walking or even flying around North Yorkshire reveals farmland at its best and the reason why North Yorkshire farmers are a treasured commodity.

Scarborough North Bay and Whitby have won the highly sought-after Blue Flag Award for 2013. North Yorkshire offers brilliant beaches of the highest standard for the family. These outstanding beaches have been rewarded for their facilities, cleanliness, and, in the case of the Blue Flag awards, meeting the highest international standard of water quality.

Did you Know? Scarborough is the oldest seaside resort in Britain! Two Icelandic Viking brothers called Kormak and Thorgils were the first men to establish the fort Skardaborg. It is now generally accepted that the name Skardaborg, came down to us as Scarborough.

green adventure What does ‘going green’ mean to you? In truth I suspect that it means something slightly different to all of us. Here in North Yorkshire where we welcome visitors from all over the world we try and take practical look at how we can help visitors to ‘go green’. For one day why not consider going car free? By letting the bus or the train take the strain, you can focus all your energy on the day ahead rather than the road ahead! This area has an extensive network of buses which will take you from A to B and C, D, E and F in between as well! Go to www.transportdirect.info or www.traveline.org.uk for timetables or ask at one of our Tourist Information Centres for help with planning a route. All Aboard! Step back in time on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (www.nymr.co.uk) and let its heritage steam and diesel trains take you through the moors and out to the coast. Visit during one of the steam railway’s event weekends and not only can you travel in green way but also enjoy some of the interesting some would say bizarre rituals that the steam railway do so well. The Esk Valley Railway (www.eskvalleyrailway.co.uk) connects Whitby and Middlesbrough taking in secluded valleys, moorland and picturesque villages along the way.

Help us to protect our wildlife by leaving wild flowers for others to enjoy. Please avoid disturbing birds and other animals particularly during the breeding season from March until June. Keep to paths or tracks where possible and use stiles or gates, remembering to leave gates as you find them. Please don’t start campfires or drop cigarettes or matches on the moorland and make sure you take all litter back to where you are staying, the will welcome its return. Dogs are more than welcome in many areas but please keep them under tight control, preferably on a lead.

All transport web links and full details on travel can be found here. www.visityorkshire.com/transport

shop locally In Yorkshire we like sticky pounds! By that we mean that if you shop locally your money stays in the area and gets recycled so everyone can benefit. Around every corner you can sample locally grown and produced food at delicatessens, cafĂŠs, pubs and restaurants. By shopping locally you will not only be supporting local skills and businesses but you will also be helping to reduce food miles and traffic, which has benefits for all of us.
