Prospectus


Phoenix Academy is committed to safe guarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. Phoenix Academy has been set up to be a centre of excellent practice to provide a unique and specialist educational resource for students with Special Educational Needs of various types but particularly those with emotional, social and behavioural difficulties. The main emphasis is on nurturing the individual child in order for them to achieve to their full potential. We aim to provide a quality care and education facility and endeavour to give young people who have had many setbacks, a fresh start in life. This is approached by drawing on a wide range of techniques and strategies, to meet the needs of the individual, whilst ensuring the right to access the Curriculum is protected and utilised to help promote self esteem and personal development.

CURRICULUM Phoenix Academy offers students a holistic, broad and balanced curriculum which allows pupils to grow academically, vocationally, socially, physically and emotionally. We encourage a ‘Can do’ culture at the school and by recognising students’ individual needs we are able to work with their particular strengths and help them achieve to their full potential.

ACHIEVEMENT At Phoenix Academy, we have high expectations of all our students and celebrate their ongoing successes through positive reward. We aim to build confidence and self- esteem through the use of praise and encouragement. We use a Positive School Rewards System to encourage and motivate students to succeed academically and to manage their behaviour appropriately. Students are rewarded with vouchers for achieving a set amount of points each week. They can also earn vouchers for achieving Student of the Week. At Phoenix Academy we can offer a range of qualifications and awards across the curriculum, including GCSE’s, Entry Level Certificates, ASDAN awards and short courses, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Functional Skills Certificates and AQA unit awards.


LIFE SKILLS

ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS We offer a sports activity at least once a week. This can be on site, or using local amenities. We can offer tennis, football, basketball, badminton, climbing, sailing, kayaking, orienteering, assault courses, horse riding, running, walking and surfing. Trips are offered once a week as a reward and motivation for good behaviour and learning. This can be a trip to the beach, woodland walks and BBQ, Skate Park or shopping to spend vouchers.

Life skills are an important part of life at Phoenix Academy. We teach practical skills which the young people will need when they leave education. We have weekly cookery lessons which teach students to cook sweet and savoury recipes from around the world and students are encouraged to think about healthy food choices and how to budget for food and ingredients. The PSHE curriculum enables learners to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills needed to manage their lives now and in the future. The PSHE program facilitates young people to take responsibility for themselves by preparing them for their future roles as responsible adults. We offer a short course in personal finance which aims to help young people to understand where money comes from, how to budget and live independently and understand the financial implications of personal life choices.


Experiences of life outside school and care are a very important part of the education we offer and we maintain links with outside agencies such as Careers advisors, colleges, police, fire service and youth services in order to widen the curriculum and provide motivation.

Life skills are an important part of life at Phoenix Academy. We teach practical skills which the young person will need when they leave education.

Work experience can be arranged if appropriate and could include: carpentry, motor vehicle maintenance, horticulture, hairdressing, catering and agriculture. Students have accessed the Alternative Education Company for work experience which is based on the Blackdown hills. The primary focus of this provision is to make a sustained difference to the life chances and social, emotional and physical well being of disaffected young people. They offer employability skills and vocational qualifications.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION Phoenix Academy is located near to the gardens of Fyne Court and Hestercombe and the Quantock Hills. These present opportunities for studying the landscape and outdoor activities. The students may be involved in gardening, especially on their own plots, which gives them a means of creative expression. These activities and lessons encourage learning, confidence and self -esteem through practical activities and planned activities which foster enjoyment, participation, practical and social skills. Independence is encouraged by gaining an understanding of health and safety needs, group and individual tasks.

Students can also participate in our Duke of Edinburgh award scheme which involves completing a personal programme of activities in four sections Volunteering, Physical, Skills and an Expedition.
