THE BUSTLING

MARKET TOWNS

The picturesque market towns of North Yorkshire are steeped in a rich history dating back to the 12th century. Unique in their offering, they continue to serve their communities in much the same way they have done for centuries.

1

Charming market towns your thing? Discover more about them here. www.visityorkshire.com/market-towns

Originally markets were held on Sundays; community life revolved around the village or hamlet nearest to home, and going to market was habitual after gathering for church. As hamlets grew into villages and villages to towns, the more formal markets that we recognise today were established.

Nowadays these market towns are vibrant centres of industry, providing employment and important facilities and services to local communities. And on market days you can expect to find an eclectic mix of stalls with a wide variety of goods on offer, to be enjoyed in a friendly and vibrant atmosphere.

Yorkshire is now widely regarded as the spiritual centre of English cycling having been involved in the development of road racing and time trialling from the earliest days.

In 2014 the most northerly stage in the history of the Tour de France was a triumphant success with over two million people turning out to cheer on the world’s best cyclists. In 2015 the new three-stage ‘Tour de Yorkshire’ race will take place between 1-3 May 2015. The Moor to Sea Cycle network links over 100 miles of quiet lanes and rights of way across the North York Moors National Park. It can be cycled in its entirety in a week but there’s also plenty of sections suitable for day rides or less.

THE WILD BEAUTY OF

NORTH YORKSHIRE’S NATIONAL PARKS With its open fells and dramatic valleys, the Yorkshire Dales National Park is a wildlife haven rich in cultural heritage offering visitors a wonderful sense of tranquillity. The North York Moors meanwhile is one of the largest expanses of heather moorland in the UK, bordered by the North Sea to the east and with woodland and forest making up a fifth of its vast expanse.

1

As well as stunning countryside and an inexhaustible selection of walks to enjoy, both National Parks have seen a revival in traditional crafts and industries such as bee keeping, brewing, glass blowing, game keeping and cheese making. With so much to see and do, you’ll need to set aside plenty of time to explore these two beautiful jewels in North Yorkshire’s crown.

DISCOVER THE DIVERSITY OF

COAST & COUNTRYSIDE There is also plenty of history and culture to be enjoyed; Whitby is well known for its connections to Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Captain Cook set sail from here. The staggering views of the coastline from Whitby Abbey are a must see, while the expanse of sand, rock pools and sheltered waters of Filey make it ideal for families. Add to this the packed programme of annual festivals and plays and it’s no wonder the North Yorkshire coast is so popular!

1

By contrast the countryside is a beautiful mix of rolling dales, moorland heather, forests and chalk uplands, with fields of oil seed rape and linseed providing striking yellows and blues. Here you will find an abundance of wildlife and spectacular outcrops of rock that signal where the moor meets fertile farmland. Follow the winding country lanes and pathways that crisscross the landscape to lead you on a voyage of discovery.
