MARKET TOWNS & VILLAGES

ou’ll never be short of things to do in our fascinating market towns. Independent shops and galleries offer a unique shopping experience, with local crafts inspired by the surrounding landscape, while local produce can be enjoyed at many of the area’s award-winning restaurants, weekly markets and farmers’ markets. The area encompasses hundreds of settlements of varying size, from moorside hamlets to picturesque riverside villages and small market towns. Many of Yorkshire’s most loved and best kept villages are in the area, such as Thornton-le-Dale and Hutton-le-Hole. However, if you stray off the beaten track you will be equally rewarded – the variety of villages is endless and most have something distinctive to seek out. Malton & Norton Malton is one of Yorkshire’s most renowned foodie destinations built around its famous local produce, food shopping and monthly food markets. Malton is host to a weekly Saturday market and to one of the biggest livestock markets in the north of England. Monthly food and farmers’ markets are popular as is May’s massive annual ‘Food Lovers Festival’ attracting some of the biggest names in food. The neighbouring town of Norton is noted as a centre for training racehorses and riders can be seen on the gallops near the town. Malton is an excellent base from which to visit some of the county’s most popular visitor attractions. On the edge of Malton is Eden Camp, a unique museum of social life in the Second World War. To the west is Castle Howard – perhaps the most spectacular country house in the North of England, with its beautiful façades familiar to many from Brideshead Revisited. A few miles to the north, Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo is one of the UK’s most popular attractions.

Kirkbymoorside Known locally as ‘Kirby’, the town name literally means church-by-the-moor-side. Fine Georgian houses and welcoming hostelries edge the broad cobble-lined main street. Market traders sell a range of goods every Wednesday. Pickering Pickering is a traditional market town with a castle, ancient church frescos and local museum of rural life. The town hosts the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which operates steam trains, through the heart of the North York Moors National Park to Grosmont. There are some services which continue to the coast to Whitby. The skyline of the town is dominated by the magnificent spire of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, which contains some remarkable 15th century murals. Whilst hidden above the town, the ruins of Pickering Castle harbour a rich royal history, originally built of wood by William the Conqueror to suppress rebellious northerners. Helmsley One of Yorkshire’s most popular market towns, Helmsley has a characterful market place, historic architecture, a wide range of quality independent shops and an excellent selection of award-winning accommodation, pubs, cafes and restaurants. It is these businesses that have helped Helmsley recently achieve the title of ‘Britain’s Best Market Town’. High above the town are the ruins of Helmsley Castle built in the 12th century successfully besieged by Parliamentarian forces during the Civil War. The town is also the home of Helmsley Walled Garden originally built in 1758 to supply the Duncombe estate with fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. The Duncombe Park Estate is also home to the National Birds of Prey Centre.

nglish Heritage There are several properties owned by English Heritage to visit in the area which bring history to life for all the family. Visit castles including Scarborough, one of the most dramatic castle ruins in the country, Helmsley, with its imaginative hands-on exhibition in the mission range and Pickering with its extensive views of the surrounding North Yorkshire countryside.

National Trust Visit the two National Trust properties in the area and be inspired by their grand surroundings. Nunnington Hall, a honey-coloured country house, set on the banks of the River Rye was once home to the doctor of Henry VIII, Edward VI and Elizabeth I. Climb the three staircases from the magnificent oak panelled hall to see family rooms, the nursery and the haunted room!

Find peace and serenity by visiting an abbey including Rievaulx, one of the most complete and impressive abbeys in Britain; Whitby an iconic gothic ruin in the famous seaside town or Byland with its great circular rose window, now surviving only in part, which was probably the model for the rise window of York Minster.

Rievaulx Terrace and Temples, an 18th century grasscovered terrace landscaped from wooded hillside with views of Rievaulx Abbey, two classical temples, one furnished and decorated as a dining-room.

Take an inspiring visit to one of the two priories – Mount Grace, the best-preserved of the ten British ‘charterhouses’, whose Carthusian monks lived as hermits in cottage-like cells and Kirkham, the riverside ruins of an Augustinian priory.

Castle Howard The most well-known stately home in the area is Castle Howard, designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1699 and taking over 100 years to complete. The house is filled with collections of pictures, porcelain, sculpture and furniture gathered by generations of the Howard family. www.castlehoward.co.uk Sutton Park Sutton Park is a charming and lived-in house, built of mellow brick in the 18th century. The house contains beautiful furniture, an important collection of porcelain and numerous paintings – many originally from Buckingham House, now known as the Queen’s official residence – Buckingham Palace. www.statelyhome.co.uk Museums Enjoy the area’s colourful and intriguing past at one of the numerous museums, each of which outlines different parts of the area’s heritage.

A visit to the World of James Herriot, Thirsk based in the original home and surgery of the world’s most famous vet, will take you on a journey back to the 1940s. Experience the underground world of a real ironstone mine during a guided tour at Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum in Skinningrove. The Beck Isle Museum in Pickering offers a charming view of local social history based around 27 rooms and displays with highlights including the Victorian pub, costume gallery and chemists shop. Discover Malton Museum and its nationally important collection of Roman artefacts, mainly from the Malton Roman fort and town, as well as archaeological material of all periods from across the local area. Shandy Hall was the home of Laurence Sterne, author of Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey, from 1760 until 1768. The house, more than 500 years old, is now a registered museum housing the world’s finest collection of Sterne’s works, letters and illustrations.

ach garden offers a unique and memorable experience for visitors – whether you wish to be dazzled by the impressive gardens of a stately home, dotted with statues, lakes, fountains and temples or prefer to enjoy the tranquillity of a walled garden, there is something to satisfy every taste.

Lavender Gardens Enjoy the scent of lavender at the two lavender gardens – Wolds Way Lavender on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds and Yorkshire Lavender in the Howardian Hills. Explore the gardens and discover the many varieties of lavender and herbs, many of which are available to buy as a souvenir of your visit or for an afternoon tea with a difference try a lavender scone served with one of several varieties of lavender jam.

Walled Gardens Visit the two walled gardens in the North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds and experience two very different gardens. The award winning Walled Garden at Scampston is a 4.5 acre contemporary garden, created by the internationally acclaimed plantsman, Piet Oodolf. The garden features striking perennial meadow planting, traditional spring/autumn borders and spectacular autumn grasses.

The Yorkshire Arboretum Explore the wonderful ‘Garden of Trees’ at the Yorkshire Arboretum which offers relaxing walks through beautiful landscape with stunning views. Dogs are welcome in the Arboretum. Ray Wood has an amazing collection of Rhododendrons, Hybrids, shrubs and rare trees from around the world.

Helmsley Walled Garden, a 5 acre kitchen garden built in 1758, is set against the backdrop of Helmsley Castle. The gardens produce unusual varieties of flowers, vegetables and herbs, 70 varieties of Heritage apples, 34 Victorian indoor vines and modern outdoor vines.

Rievaulx Terrace & Temples Constructed in the 1750’s, the two temples overlooking Rievaulx Abbey were developed as a family pleasure and picnic site. Visitors are greeted with changing views as they progress along the grassy terrace.

Stately Home Gardens Many stately homes also have notable gardens which are worth visiting for their own unique features. These include the 18th century gardens at Duncombe Park in Helmsley, elegant and spacious, offering stunning views from the terraces over the Rye Valley. Keen to establish natural flora, mowing is relaxed on the grassy banks and this policy has paid off as the Doric Temple is now surrounded with swathes of wild flowers. Way marked walks, discovery trails and orienteering courses allow visitors to discover 450 acres of parkland, gardens and a National Nature Reserve. Also visit the gardens at Castle Howard where its formal terraces with graceful statues, wide open spaces, lakeside paths and richly planted rose gardens provide the visitor with endless opportunities for gentle walks amongst a riot of colour. Produce from the Ornamental Vegetable Garden can be bought in the Farm Shop and plants, trees and shrubs can be bought from the Plant Centre. The Courtyard Restaurant offers an excellent menu based on local produce.

he heritage coastline of the North York Moors National Park can be explored within easy reach of rural North Yorkshire. Whitby is remembered for its maritime and literary connections. The old town is dominated by the cliff top ruins of the beautiful 13th century Whitby Abbey, which provided the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Close by at Whitby Harbour, a whale’s jawbone commemorates the town’s past as a whaling port. A few miles from Whitby, a number of romantic fishing villages rest off the cliff, such as Runswick Bay and Robin Hood’s Bay. For a traditional day out at the seaside, Scarborough, one of England’s oldest seaside resorts, has something for all the family or Filey with its miles of golden sand is popular with families.

yedale, nestling between the historic city of York and the spectacular East Coast, is an ideal base for touring the best of North Yorkshire. In less than an hour, you could be shopping in York or Beverley; exploring the Yorkshire Dales; enjoying the heritage coastline and fishing town of Whitby or the fun of the fair at Scarborough.

Historic York and Beverley The historic City of York is one of the great medieval, walled cities of the World. A wonderful train journey from Malton, through the glorious Derwent Valley to York, will ensure you arrive in the city centre relaxed and ready to enjoy the many historic attractions it has to offer. Within walking distance from the station are the National Railway Museum, the famous Jorvik Viking Centre, York Minster, Clifford’s Tower and the York Castle Museum – all excellent family attractions. York also has an excellent shopping centre and many cafes, pubs & restaurants to relax in. During September the city hosts the York Festival of Food and Drink.

Over 1300 years of history have made Beverley what it is today. This attractive market town boasts a blend on the past and present. Attractions on offer range from music festivals to ghost walks, medieval churches to bustling weekend markets. An unspoilt historic townscape features outstanding buildings and impressive architecture. The horizon is dominated on two counts, to the north side the medieval St Mary’s church and the south the majestic Beverley Minster, which dates back to the 13th century.
