Our Sixth Form Curriculum

We offer a broad range of academic and vocational courses delivered by subject specialists.

Students can study A Level or vocational subjects, which are taught across Harris Boys and Harris Girls. You are based at the site where you have most lessons: HGAED on Homestall Road or HBAED on Peckham Rye.

All of the courses we offer lead to Level 3 qualifications. The curriculum is designed for students who are motivated, ready to develop their independence and will thrive in an educational environment where the rigours and demands of the different subjects are embraced and taught in a supportive manner.

At enrolment we guide you to find the right pathway for you:

• 3 or 4 A Levels

• A combination of A Level and Vocational subjects

• Vocational subjects only

A Levels are assessed predominately through external examination while Vocational courses will have a greater percentage of coursework involved.

We use our Sixth Form expertise to make sure that you find the right pathway for you; one where you can be successful and gain the qualifications you need to access ambitious next steps. We apply the Harris Sixth Form entry criteria which can be found here

All courses are taught by subject specialists  who demonstrate and model the proficiency and scholarship needed to be successful students of their chosen discipline. www.harrissixthform.org.uk/654/entry-requirements

The wider curriculum at Harris East Dulwich Sixth Form

Excellent teaching and learning are a huge part of the success of our Sixth Form at East Dulwich. However, we understand that success does not come from teaching and learning alone, it is also the result of the personal development of the student. We encourage all of our Sixth Form students to grab every opportunity and to challenge themselves to try new things and go outside of their comfort zone. We want to give you a well-rounded educational experience which fosters academic, social and personal development in preparation for future success. In addition to great teaching and learning, you can expect:

Enrichment

We make time every week for enrichment and are proud to offer a range of opportunities, for example:

• Sports

• First Aid training

• Online learning courses

• Music lessons

• Subject societies such Law Society and Psychology Society

• Peer Mentor training

• Volunteering opportunities

• Access to external speakers and workshops

• The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

At HED6 we will help you grab new opportunities and achieve your goals. We love celebrating student success stories.

Student leadership opportunities

We are keen to develop your leadership skills and help you grow in confidence in communication and team work. At both East Dulwich Girls and East Dulwich Boys we recruit a team of Sixth Form student leaders in Year 12 who represent the Sixth Form student body, meet with the Sixth Form team to discuss ideas and feedback, run events and fundraisers and support wider school events and activities.

We also promote opportunities to lead and support others, for example, running a student society, organising a fundraising event or  working with younger students as a mentor.

Harris Experience Advance programme

We encourage all of our students to dream big and be ambitious about their next steps. The Harris Experience Advanced programme gives our most academically able students outstanding preparation for some of the country’s top university destinations, including Russell Group universities, and supports them with entry to the most competitive courses, such as Medicine, Dentistry and Law. Students have automatic entry into the programme if they have a high GCSE average point score

and they can also opt in if they are willing to engage and put in the work to access the most competitive courses and universities. Being part of the Harris Experience Advanced programme means having access to extra talks and workshops, receiving notifications of  opportunities being promoted for able students by top universities, including summer residentials and getting tailored feedback on university applications.

Insight programmes with top universities and employers

We make sure that you know about the brilliant programmes you can access in Year 12, in London and beyond. Every year we have students who successfully gain places on University programmes like the Social Mobility Foundation, the Sutton Trust programme and the K+ programme, Anatomy Academy and Developmental Neuroscience programme at King’s College London. As summer of Year 12 approaches, we make sure that you are aware of residential weeks at top universities and help you to make a successful application. We also share opportunities to gain work experience, mentoring and interview practice with top employers in London such as management consultancies, top law firms and tech giants.

“Pupils receive high quality individual advice on future careers and subject options.”
Ofsted

All students are actively encouraged to attend two or more university open days  over the course of their two years with us.  We also welcome external speakers and alumni to share their experiences of higher education and the workplace.

Subject trips and speakers

We’re keen that you learn outside the classroom as well as in it and all Sixth Form subjects run trips and invite speakers in to help you deepen your subject understanding and build your awareness of future careers  and opportunities. Trips are organised across a range of subjects included Art, Biology, Business, IT, History and Sports.

Work Experience

Work experience is a key component at the end of year 12. All students have the opportunity to complete a week of work experience at the end of the academic year. This is a chance to gain insight into future career pathways and to understand the skills and qualities needed in the workplace. We support students to find a placement and help them develop their written and oral communication skills ready for the workplace. Many of our students also access  work experience and insight days at other points in the academic year including the October and Easter breaks.

Student Support

We

recognise that Sixth Form is a time of huge change and growth and

we’re

here to support you all the way.

Our comprehensive personal support programme means that every student is cared for and championed. As a small Sixth Form with around 150 students in each year group across East Dulwich Girls and East Dulwich Boys, we enjoy getting to know you well and finding out your interests and aspirations.

We have Pastoral and Safeguarding leads who are experts in working with young people to help them navigate this important transition point and signpost them to the best sources of advice and guidance.

Every Sixth Form student has a tutor who they meet with in coaching time a couple of days every week. Sixth Form tutors are a key point of contact who work with students   to help them navigate careers and next steps and lead delivery of our personal development curriculum.

Our Personal, Health, Social and Economic curriculum is tailored to the needs of young people and the issue they face. Our goal is to support students to become well-rounded young people who are confident, resilient, independent, ambitious and knowledgeable about how to navigate life beyond Sixth Form.

Students are also supported with careers advice by a Harris Federation Careers Officer who meets one-to-one with all Sixth Form students. This advice is further strengthened by our brilliant subject teachers, all experts in their field and able to help you make the  connections between Sixth Form study and future careers.

“The school’s work to develop pupils’ character is exceptional. ”

PART OF THE SUCCESSFUL Harris Federation

The Harris Federation is a not-for-profit charity with 55 academies in London and Essex. The founder and Chairman of the Harris Federation is Lord Harris of Peckham.

His vision of delivering happy and successful education is brought to life by an excellent team of teachers and leaders.

The Federation regularly tops academic studies and national league tables measuring progress and performance. Almost all Harris secondary academies are judged ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.

Harris secondary academies are known for combining traditional standards of manners, discipline and uniform with the best of modern teaching and technology. There are around four applications from parents for every place available.

We send many of our Sixth Formers to Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group universities – winning places on these prestigious courses at a rate of more than twice the national average – as well as top apprenticeships and competitive vocational courses. We are immensely proud of the role that our alumni are now beginning to play in the world and of what we believe our current generation of pupils will go on to achieve.

In addition to running schools, the Harris Federation provides high quality training and professional development for teachers throughout this part of England.

Follow @HarrisFed on to stay updated.

The Harris Sixth Form is where adult life begins and where you begin to take the first steps towards a successful career.

Whatever study or career path you want to follow, we have the right choices for you through our two very different but equally ambitious routes for your future.

We are proud to have almost 2,000 students, making us one of the largest Sixth Forms in London. One benefit of our size is that we are able to provide a wealth of opportunities for our students that simply cannot be found elsewhere. But equally, we are proud despite our growth to have retained an ethos that treats Sixth Formers as individuals, allowing and encouraging students to grow and succeed. We hope that you are excited by what you learn about us on this prospectus and look forward to receiving your application.
