The Junior School is where the building blocks for future learning are laid. At Claremont Fan Court Junior School the first steps your child takes on his or her journey of discovery are with excitement and laughter. There is a strong feeling of family built through shared values. The enjoyment and exploration of the beautiful Claremont estate provides an extraordinary backdrop for school life. A happy buzz of creativity and endeavour permeates our Early Years. Children are encouraged to reach their full potential in a caring and nurturing environment in which they learn the skills of social interaction and habits of learning whilst having fun along the way. Children are taught to respect each other and to care for their friends and their surroundings. The bright, well equipped Nursery and Reception classrooms enhance the school experience. Learning is carefully planned by class teachers, supported by full time classroom assistants and centred around purposeful play that is a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities.

Friendships flourish and each child’s growing understanding is nurtured. Every classroom opens to its own extensive, creative, free-play space. Specially designed age-suitable facilities, including outdoor swimming pool, enable every Lower Junior child to begin their learning journey effectively. Children start to develop their understanding through reading, writing, number, science study and the exploration of themed humanities topics. This work stresses the importance of broad based knowledge in context with strong character values. Children are encouraged to think creatively and develop an enquiring attitude. Teachers are ably supported by teaching assistants and specialist teachers for sports and music (and French from Year 2). Across the whole Junior School, progress is carefully monitored and tailored to meet the needs of individuals. There are many opportunities for both formal and informal contact with parents. Children establish good work habits and experience success. They become confident in their work and social development. Happy children make the best learners.

The developing of confidence and caring attitudes underpins strong achievements. From the security of their own base, in the historic Stable Court from the original Claremont estate, the Upper Junior pupils also share the Senior School music and sports facilities, science laboratories and design technology studios. The 18th century walled garden is also used. Studying within a traditional subject-based curriculum, pupils begin to develop greater independence and take increasing responsibility for their learning. Each class is primarily taught by their class teacher, who is also responsible for pastoral care. The curriculum is enriched by specialist teachers as children progress to year 6. Pupils are supported in taking an active part in school life to explore and develop their talents: playing in sports matches, performing in plays and participating in musical events. These help to prepare all pupils for future responsibilities and to encourage them to grow as individuals. Creative thinking and learning in the Junior School is ensured through a wide variety of co-curricular clubs, trips and enrichment activities. Early leadership skills are developed through opportunities to be house or sports captains, open day guides and representatives of the school council. At Claremont Fan Court School, encouragement and praise are fundamental to ensure that motivated learning and high standards are achieved. All successes are a cause for celebration. Here, all pupils are valued for what they contribute to the school community.
