Hi, Callum! Ailsa plays the piano and the clarinet. Callum plays the piano and French horn. Why did you choose the French horn? Do you remember the music course we went on last summer at Hindhead, where we tried lots of orchestral instruments? I liked the sound of the French horn best. Also, it has only three valves so I don’t have to learn to press many keys! How do you play so many notes, then? I change the shape of my mouth. Did you know the horn is a brass instrument? Yes. Did you know the clarinet is a woodwind instrument? I was on the course, too! Why did you choose the clarinet? On the music course, I liked the flute and the clarinet best. I then decided that the clarinet was right for me. Did you find it easy learning a second instrument?

Hi, Ailsa!
CALLUM:
A Musical Dialogue
If I blow really hard I can make an elephant sound and make Grandad jump! How about you, Ailsa? Sometimes I play notes I haven’t learnt, but normally, no, I just play properly! When I wake up in the morning I feel excited about practising the piano. I like practising my horn, too, but leave this until after school. I prefer practising my clarinet because I like the sound it makes. I also like the fact that I make up my own 12-bar jazz music. Shall we stop talking now? Yes. How do we often end our pieces? By slowing down, a rit, and getting louder, fff.

5 ½. We had just started in Year 1. We started our second instruments in Year 3. Callum, are you ever cheeky when you play your French horn?

Yes, because I had already got the ‘feel’ of what music means. How old were we when we started learning the piano?
CALLUM:
B…Y…E…!
Yes I did, because I could already read the notes easily. Did you find it easy?
