POST SIXTEEN

Raine’s Foundation School

“When you join a new school people have already formed FRIENDSHIP GROUPS but everyone at Raine’s was really friendly and included me straight away. The best part of the sixth form is the people and the teachers are good too.” Hope Murphy-Nanton joined us from the Brit School

What makes Raine’s unique? Raine’s Sixth Form has high aspirations for all its students. We strive to blend tradition with a forward thinking approach to the changing requirements of young people about to make the transition into adulthood. We combine our ambitions for academic attainment with an emphasis on personal growth. We want students to succeed, achieve their full potential and develop into moral, responsible and fulfilled individuals. Our students value and enjoy learning; a caring environment allows us to nurture individuality and a sense of belonging. We regard community cohesion as a strength of the school, maintaining links with parents and carers is integral to the success of our students. We pride ourselves on providing support and opportunities to challenge and develop young people.

Community Raine’s was established by Henry Raine in 1719 and is one of the oldest schools in London. We have played an important role in the local community for nearly 300 years, a Church of England school that continues to be highly regarded and well supported locally. A sense of community is pivotal to the school’s ethos, as we move further into the 21st Century we are developing our community spirit to encompass a global context working closely with our

partner school in China. As community members, sixth form students have an important role. Students are able to contribute not only to the school and the local community but through our international links they are now contributing to the community worldwide. The values and vision which grow from our Christian ethos help Raine’s to create a positive and inclusive atmosphere, in which students of different faiths are welcomed.

“ The ethos of a close knit community produces young people who have developed a personal responsibility and awareness that is a credit to both themselves and to the structure of the Sixth Form at Raine’s. they are remarkable young people who the team look forward to working with.” Business mentor 2008

Aspiration We foster the desire to achieve. All students are encouraged to seek and celebrate success, being aware that everyone has an equal part to play. Respect is a theme that is central to our philosophy; the enrichment programme aims to develop a sense of worth, responsibility and a wider awareness of adult life. A high priority is given to advising students about the options open to them when they move on from the sixth form, providing them with the skills to make a considered and informed choice. We are proud of the links that we have forged with local employers and Higher Education establishments throughout the country and appreciate the contribution they make to our careers programme and the development of employability skills.

POST SIXTEEN

We provide information and advice for students who want to take a gap year before starting university or employment. Past students have embarked on projects in Africa and there are now developing opportunities in China and Europe via our partner and link schools. The majority of our students aspire to further their education with many progressing onto degree courses with a large proportion gaining places at the country’s leading universities.

“ When we went to our partner school in China it opened my eyes. It is a remarkable place. It made me realise that the world is a big, diverse place full of opportunities. I will go back.” Russ Khroma Raine’s

“I am delighted to be able to say that students from your institution have settled in well on the degree course at the University. They are extremely well-prepared, enthusiastic and confident. I would welcome similar applicants from Raine’s Foundation School in the future.” Professor P Rawlings Bristol University

Achieving The school provides a wide range of post sixteen courses, Raine’s strives to deliver a flexible and broad curriculum that takes into account individual learning styles and needs. All students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and are equipped with verbal and written communication skills and the confidence to use them. Staff aim to create programmes and lessons that stretch and support students in their learning, allowing them to fulfill their potential. The majority of our students go onto higher education, including entry to the very best universities.

Past students continue to share their achievements with the school resulting in unique opportunities for our current students. We promote a wide range of activities that allow personal development providing students with the opportunity to achieve both in and beyond the classroom. Students benefit from a good range of extracurricular and enrichment activities offered by the school which contribute to their good personal development and well-being.

CONTRIBUTING Post sixteen students are encouraged to play an active part within the school community. They are regarded as ambassadors and are seen as positive role models by younger students. Students become proactive, realising the importance of involvement with key roles undertaken by a prefect team that is established by peer selection. The position for Head Boy, Head Girl and Sacristan, are particularly demanding, challenging and rewarding.

Through community service post 16 students support other year groups, get involved with local issues and are encouraged to make a difference. The sixth formers have been responsible for the introduction of numerous initiatives, including the implementation of lunch time sports clubs, talent events, fashion shows and raising awareness of physical and learning disabilities that effect life experiences of young people.

“We try to put our belief in Christian hospitality to the whole community: both inside and outside of the school we are committed to exploring wider world issues around conflict resolutions, disability and human ENDEAVOUR, a commitment that we try to live by daily. Rev Brian Ralph School Chaplain

Support Students are well supported in the sixth form. All students are assigned to a tutor group and a comprehensive tutorial programme has been designed to meet the needs of post 16 study. Establishing a close relationship between tutors and students is very important. Tutors play a key role following the development of their students both academically and personally, offering support, guidance and advice. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and by supported monitoring and target setting staff guide

students toward success. The Sixth Form team are always available for consultation with both student and parents. Listening and responding to concerns is viewed as paramount, if a student just wants an informal chat someone will be there. As a church school Raine’s has a dedicated chaplain who is very good at listening. The sixth form have been key to establishing a multi faith chapel that is open throughout the school day. This provides students and staff with a safe and tranquil place in which to reflect or pray.

“ There is a strong sense of community in the school which students recognise and value.“ 2008 Inspection

There are opportunities for students to meet with a life coach, working with personal mentors from the academic and business world. Becoming part of a buddy group working with post graduate students from a number of London Universities is recommended for all students whose intention is to remain in education. It is our aim to provide not only academic support but to also enable students to cope with the demands of university life and advice is given on student finance and career opportunities.
