Pride in Excellence
The Academy prides itself on, and has a reputation for, the excellent support that it provides for all of its students. There are Pastoral Leaders at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 who are key to the success of students as they grow towards adulthood. Each of the Pastoral Leaders has a team of Tutors who are the first point of call for any questions concerning your child. Tutors meet with their group twice a day and have the important role of getting to know their tutor group well so that they can support them with both their pastoral and academic needs as the years progress. Each of the students will also belong to a second family – that of their House. The Houses, named after the historic Lifeboats of Selsey consist of a House Head and a tutor group from each of the five year groups. This enables students in all year groups to get to know and support each other, through numerous joint activities, competitions and events to develop team building and leadership skills. Challenge days, Junior Apprentice and Inter House Sports have become annual events on The Academy calendar.

Care and Support
Support for all students begins at the point of transition. Transition is both an exciting and daunting time for children and parents alike. At The Academy we begin our transition work as early as May by visiting the Primary Schools to discuss vital information with staff that will support a successful transition into Year 7. Pastoral care concerns and individual needs information are shared so that plans of action and interventions can be put in place to ensure that the transition process is as worry free as possible. All students can attend Year 5 fun days, Year 6 taster days and Year 7 induction days to support this process. The Pastoral Care Team continue working with individual children on a 1:1 basis at their Primary School until satisfied that every child is prepared. The Inclusive Learning Team works effectively to support students with identified issues to remove barriers to learning. Students with a variety of additional needs gain support both within and outside the classroom. Learning Assistants are available to support all students and staff in mainstream lessons and also in small groups within the Learning Support Area. Careful attention is always given to the assessment of pupils’ special educational needs and disabilities.

An Engaging Curriculum All aspects of The Academy are focused on raising standards and therefore supporting high achievement. This is reflected in Teaching and Learning and in the Curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4. The drive behind the structure of the Curriculum is standards and a commitment to improving literacy and numeracy at Key Stage 3, to support high standards in English and Maths at Key Stage 4. Alongside this is our recognition that all young people have different needs and aspirations and therefore require personalised pathways tailored to individual needs as they move up through the school. Examples of this would be a phonics programme for individuals in Year 7 leading to additional 1:1 tuition in English at Key Stage 4.
Students in Year 7 study the following subjects: G G G G G
The innovative and flexible Curriculum reflects the academic rigour of The Academy, with a commitment to the English Baccalaureate, as well as the capacity to meet the needs of those who pursue a more vocational direction. Personal Social Health Education (PSHE), Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (IAG), and the National Curriculum are embedded in our curriculum to support students at every stage of their development.

Education Beyond the Classroom The extended day for students at The Academy may start with the reading club at 8.30 and finish with practicing for the play late in the afternoon. Whatever the activity, every student has the opportunity to access and try new and exciting activities which will not only provide them with additional experiences but will ensure that they develop essential skills for life. There are many things to choose from which include sports, arts, technology and music, as well as additional study which is facilitated through the open access Electronic Learning Resource Centre. There is additional transport to support these opportunities at the end of the day when extra curricula activities have finished. The Academy encourages students to take responsibility for supporting the organisation of the school through the School Council and the House System, and also Senior Students. In this way students have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and make a positive contribution to the school, the student body and the Community of Selsey.
