Did you know that the main symbol used in the Torres Strait Islander flag is actually called a Dhari (dancer’s headdress)? Learn about the symbolism within the flag as you make and decorate your very own Dhari.

The Dhari is customarily made and worn by males. The design of a Dhari varies from island to island.

1. Using the template provided, trace the white shape that features in the centre of the flag onto some cardboard then cut it out.

2. Choose your coloured chenille stems and glue them onto your design outline. Allow to dry.

3. Glue feathers to your design, we have created a beautiful decorative border. Allow to dry.

4. Complete your design using dried natural leaves. Glue leaves down and allow to dry.

5. Cut a strip of cardboard then decorate the band using coloured markers. We chose to decorate with the Torres Strait Islander flag design.

6. Attach the decorated strip of cardboard securely to the back of your headdress using tape. Your headdress is now ready to display!

Symbol Memory Game Materials: •

Cotton Drawstring Bags – Pack of 10 – 12639

Cotton Bag – Large – 16942

Wadding – 200g Pack – 11111

Cotton Filters – Pack of 100 – 10217

CleverPatch™ Acrylic Paint Tube – Black – 75ml – 16885

Jute Twine - Natural – 70m – 17902

Other materials required: sewing needle and pencil

Clever Tip: Insert paper towel into each bag to prevent the paint from seeping through the material onto the other side of the bag.

1. Research and find 5 symbols you would like to base your memory game on. Once you have chosen the symbols you will use, lightly draw them and their meaning onto the front of the Cotton Drawstring Bags using pencil.

2. On the front of each Cotton Drawstring Bag, use the end of a cotton filter dipped in paint to create the symbols using dots. For a finer dot use the end of a scratch tool to write the meaning. Allow to dry.

4. Using a Blanket Stitch (https:// www.cleverpatch.com.au/ideas/ details/how-to-sew-a-blanketstitch) sew the top of the bag closed. You are now ready to play!

5. How to play: Place all bags facing image side down. Turn over one bag then try and find the matching symbol by turning over another. When the same symbol is revealed twice, the 2 bags can be removed. Use your memory to recall the location of matching symbols to complete the game. You can use a Large Canvas bag decorated with the same symbols to store your pieces in.

3. Remove the cord from the bag and fill it with wadding. Alternatively you can seal the bag by knotting the cord.

Paper Straws – Pack of 200 17671

Wiggle Eyes – 1.5cm Pack of 100 – 10816

Other materials required: tape, stapler, scissors and pencil

1. Begin by cutting long thin strips of paper. These will become the links of the chain and the body of your rainbow serpent.

A great resource to use in conjunction with the book ‘Warnayarra the Rainbow Snake’*

* Product code: 17876 – Author Pamela Lofts, 1987. Warnayarra, the rainbow snake. Told by the Senior Boys Class, Lajamanu School. Illus. by students from Lajamanu School. Sydney, AU: Scholastic.

2. Join the ends of a paper strip. Staple to secure.

3. Loop a second strip through the first link and join its ends. Staple to secure. You should now have 2 links joined together.

4. Continue this process until you are happy with the length of your chain. Place a straw inside each of the ends of the snake’s body. Tape to secure.

5. Create a head for your snake. We used black paper. Cut an oval shape and staple to the first link in your chain.

6. Cut a long skinny tongue. Attach to your snake’s head using tape. Use a pencil to roll the tongue of your snake.

7. Finally, attach 2 wiggle eyes to your snake’s head using glue. Your snake is now ready for story time!
