O
nce upon a time in the Wild West there was a placed named Cellb which attracted massive Jamaican reggae bands to a small remote town in the mountains. Then, yeah, there was like a crew of people the wanted to make, like, down hill mountain bike tracks and for some nuts reason in October 2011 they decided to do Drum House Ffest that celebrates culture, music and sports in no other place but a quarry! Fflippin ‘eck, mental, yeah?!? Anyway, this is the follow up that promotes music and extreme sports - climbing, mountain biking and caving. Enjoi.

Oedd dringo yn rhywbeth oeddech chi eisio ei wneud pan oeddech yn ifanc? C: Oedd, cyn gynted ag y gwelais i graig fawr roeddwn i’n meddwl ‘Dwi ishio trechu hwnna’. I: Roedd o’n anodd i ddechrau, oherwydd roedd y gêr mor ddrud ond cyn gynted ag roedd hwnnw ‘di sortio roedd o’n iawn, a dyna pryd roeddan ni’n medru dechrau dringo. C: Hefyd, cael hyd i bartner oedd ddigon do…Dwi dal i edrych os dwi’n onest.
Beth wnaeth wneud i chi benderfynu dechrau dringo? C: Coleg i ddweud y gwir, ceisio cael hyd i rhywun i fynd a ni. Roeddan ni’n meddwl ei fod o rhu berryg i ni fynd ar ein pen ein hunain… I: Ond ddaru hynna ddim ein stopio ni o ddifrif! C: Fe ddaru ni brynnu’r lleiafrif o gêr… a dechrau hefo dringo rhydd oherwydd doedda ni’m yn medru fforddio gêr. I: Roeddan ni’n arfar arbed gêr oeddan ni’n cael hyd iddo yn y creigiau.
Beth oedd o fel, y tro gyntaf wnaethoch chi ddringo? Oeddech chi’n ofn? Oedd o fel roeddech yn ei ddisgwyl? I: Roedd yn rhaid i ni fod yn tua 13/14… C: Dwi’n meddwl mai Clogwyn yr Oen oedd o, roeddat ti yn dy sgidiau ‘K-Swiss’, ac roeddwn i eisio trio fy ‘sgidiau dringo newydd. Was climbing something you wanted to do at an early age?
C: Yes, as soon as you see a big rock you think ‘I wanna conquer that’. I: It was difficult to start with because the gear was so expensive but as soon as that was sorted it was ok, and then we could start to climb. C: And also, finding a partner that was good enough…I’m still looking if I’m honest… What made you decide to start climbing?
C: College really, it was trying to find someone to take us. We thought it was too dangerous to go on our own… I: but that didn’t really stop us! C: We bought the minimalist amount of gear… and started with free climbing because we couldn’t afford the gear. I: We used to salvage gear we found from inside the rocks!
What was it like, the first time you climbed? Were you scared? Was it what you expected?
I: We must have been about 13/14 C: I think it was Clogwyn yr Oen, you were in your ‘K-Swiss’ shoes, and I wanted to try my brand new climbing shoes. I: We got up about 40 meters, and then we down climbed it, which is probably harder than going all the way! What did you learn after your first trip?
I&C: Buy a pair of climbing shoes really! C: A rope, and gear, everything really. We were doing everything wrong!

Be ddaru chi ddysgu ar ôl eich trip cyntaf? I a C: Prynnu par newydd o ‘sgidiau ringo i ddweud y gwir! C: Rhaff, gêr, pob dim i ddweud y gwir. Roeddan ni’n gwneud pob dim yn anghywir! I: Yn gryno ddaru ni ddysgu bod yn rhaid i ni ei wneud o’n iawn.
I: I mi, mae o’n daith, dwi’n hoffi gwneud mynyddoedd mawr. Buaswn i’n hoffi mynd i’r Alps yn y blynyddoedd nesaf, dwi’n hoffi hi’n oer. Ac mae o o hyd di bod yn freuddwyd gen i i ddringo Everest, ychydig yn annhebygol dwi’n gwybod, ond mae’n rhaid i chi ddechrau’n rhywle!
Lle o gwmpas Cymru da chi’n dringo?
Be, fuaswch chi’n ei ddweud, sy’n gwneud dringwr da?
C: Dechrau o gwmpas fama rhan fwyaf, ond rwan da ni’n byw tu allan i Blaenau, da ni’n mynd o gwmpas gweddill Eryri. Da ni wedi bod yn trio cael y rhai lleol i gyd. I: Dechreuais i ddringo oherwydd mae’n rhan o fynydda sef be yr ydw i eisiau’i wneud.
C: Buasai rhai pobl yn dweud, bod yn saff, ond buasai rhai pobl yn dweud bod yn berson gwallgof. I: Dringwr da fuasai person sy’n ei fwynhau o. C: Mae angen i chi gael yr angerdd, cydbwysedd rhwng dewrder a hyder i fynd allan a gwynebu’r pethau meddyliol, ond hefyd y diogelwch pan mae pethau’n mynd yn anghywir da chi’n medru cael eich hun allan. Angen gwybod eich cyfyngiadau. I: Da chi ddim eisiau brifo chi’ch hun.
Be di’r llwybr anoddaf ‘da chi di ddringo/ ei gymeryd? I: Ma siwr yr un wnaethom ni ychydig o wythnosau’n ôl… C: Ia. I: Pan mae’ch dwylo chi’n mynd yn oer, dyna ydi’r peth gwaethaf. C: Craig y Clipiau, dim ond ychydig yn uwch na Cwmorthin, dwi’n meddwl mai hwnna oedd yr un anoddaf.
Be fuasai eich mynydd/amodau/llwybr/uchder delfrydol ar gyfer dringo? C: Da ni’n gwbl gyferbyniad mewn be da ni’n hoffi. Dwi’n siorts, fest, math o ddyn - haf. Rhai sy’n cymeryd wythnos i ddringo, allan yn America. Mae ganddoch chi’r haul arnoch chi pob dydd, da chi’n gwersylla ar ddibyn glogwyn. Diwrnod ar ôl diwrnod o ddringo.
Be ydi’r wers fwyaf da chi ‘di ddysgu am ddringo? I: Gwybod be da chi’n medru a ddim yn medru gwneud. Ymddiried yn eich penderfyniadau hefyd. Peidiwch a meddwl eich bod chi’n medru dringo pob dim o’r dechrau, triwch rhai hawdd i ddechrau. C: Dwi’n meddwl ei fod o’n achos o adeiladu eich hun i fyny, dechreuwch o’r gwaelod, a dechrau i fyny. Hyd yn oed os ydach chi’n iach ac abl a da chi’n meddwl y gallwch chi ei wneud o, mae’n rhaid i chi wybod eich cyfyngiadau!
I: Basically we learnt that we had to do it properly. Where around Wales do you climb?
C: Started off round here mostly, but now we live outside Blaenau, we go around the rest of Snowdonia. We’ve just been trying to get all of the ones locally really. I: I started climbing because its part of mountainiering and that’s what I wanted to do. Whats the hardest route you’ve taken/climbed?
I: Probably the one we did a couple of weeks back… C: Yeah. I: When your hands go cold, thats the worst thing. C: Craig y Clipiau, just above Cwmorthin, I think was the hardest one. What would be your dream mountain/conditions/route/ height for climbing?
C: We’re totally opposite in what we like. I’m shorts, vest, that kind of guy - summer. Ones that are a week to climb, out in America. You’ve got the sun on you everyday, you’re camping out on the edge of a cliff. Day after day of climbing. I: For me, its an expedition, I like to do big mountains. I’d like to go to the Alps in the next couple of years. Maybe a couple of months out there, I like the cold. And it’s always been a dream for me to climb up Everest, a bit far fetched i know, but you have to start somewhere!
say a mental person. I: A great climber would be someone who enjoyed it. C: You need to have the passion, a balance between courage and confidence to go out and take on mental things, but also the safety when it goes wrong you can get yourself out of there. Need to know your limits. I: You don’t want to hurt yourself. Whats the biggest lesson you’ve learnt about climbing?
I: Knowing what you can and can’t do. Trusting your own decisions too. Don’t think that you can climb everything from the start, just try some easy ones. C: I think its just a case of slowly building yourself up, take it from the bottom, and work up. Even if your healthy and fit and you think you can do it, know your own limits!

What, would you say, makes a great climber?

fter a day of abseiling on ‘Craig Ddu’, hanging about over Blaenau Ffestiniog, we stumbled upon this little outcrop. From a young age we had always played about on these rocks and even knew it as ‘Rick’s Rock’, but now we were back, as climbers. We spent the after noon looking about the crag we finally settled who would put up the first route after an intense session of rock, paper, scissors. Despite the damp fog we managed to put up 3 new routes as pictured. For keen boulderers, keep an eye out. Lots more discoveries being made by Connaire Cann.

Pa mor aml wyt ti’n mynd i reidio ac i ble? Dwi’n mynd hefo Aron, fy nghefnder ar draciau y mae o wedi bod yn creu neu adeiladu dros y blynyddoedd. Mae rhain yn lleol i gyd. ‘Da ni’n mynd i ymarfer tua unwaith y mis ar draciau cystadleuol Pearce. ‘Upliffts’ mae nhw’n galw hein, gan fod ‘na lifft yn mynd a ni i dop y trac drwy’r dydd am £25.
Pa gystadlaethau wyt ti wedi cystdadlu ynddyn nhw? Welsh Champs, English Champs a Pearce National Rounds.
Pa un yw dy ffefryn di a pham? Pearce, gan fod ‘na chwech rownd y flwyddyn a dim ond un yn y Welsh a’r English.

For how long have you been biking?
Since I was three!
Why did you start biking?
Well I come from a family where wheels are more important than anything else! That goes from biking to motor-biking up to rallying. I started mountain biking because two of my cousins compete so I was going to have some fun too! I started to go training with them just for fun, it’s only rather recently that I decided to start competing. How often do you go biking and where?
I go with Aron, my cousin on tracks that he’s created o’r built over the years. These are all local. We go practice about once a month on Pearce competitive tracks. They call these ‘uplifts’, because there’s a lift that takes us up to the top of the track all day for £25. What competitions have you participated in?
Welsh Champs, English Champs and Pearce National Rounds. Which is your favourite and why?
Pearce, because there are 6 rounds a year and there are only one in the Welsh and the English. Describe a ‘round’ for us.
There is a practice from 10 o’clock till 4 on the Saturday. There are Land Rovers which take you up to the top of the track, and on the Sunday there are 7 different groups of riders of different quality and age that race against other riders in their group. A track lasts around three minutes usually. What quality are you and what is your best outcome?
Dwi’n rasio i safon juniour gan ‘mod i ddim yn 16 eto. Yn hwyrach y flwyddyn yma fe fyddaf yn rasio i safon youths sydd yn cynnwys reidwyr o oedranau rhwng 16 ac 18. Ymmmm, y canlyniad gorau dwi ‘di gael ydi 6ed yn Pearce flwyddyn dwytha’ ag oedd hynny allan o 18. Dwi’n gobeithio gwella ar hynny!
I race in the junior quality because I’m not 16 yet. Later during this year I will race in the youth quality which includes riders between the ages 16 and 18. The best outcome I’ve had is sixth in Pearce last year and that was out of 18. I hope to improve on that!
Busnes drud?
YES! The bike I’m on right now is worth around £1500 and bikes can cost up to £7000 sometimes. £60 for a weekend of riding and you need about £400 of kit aswell to make sure that I’m safe. So, biking is a commitment and a half!
YDI! mae’r beic dwi arno fo rwan werth tua £1500 a mae beis yn gallu costio hyd at £7000 weithiau. £60 am benwythnos o rasio a mae angen tua £400 o kit hefyd i fod yn siwr ‘mod i’n saff. Felly, mae beicio yn commitment a hanner.
Be yw’r anaf waethaf ti wedi cael neu weld mewn cystadlauaeth? Yn bersonnol, dwi wedi torri 4 bys yn gwneud hyn. Ond y crash gwaethaf dwi ‘di gweld oedd pan oedd fy ffrin wedi methu a brecio ar gornel. Na’th o fflio’n syth i fewn i goeden head first… lwcus fod o’n gwisgo armour neu fel arall fydda ganddo fo ddim ysgwydd ar ôl.
Expensive buisness?
What is the worst injury you’ve had or seen in a competition?
Personally, I’ve broken four fingers doing this. But the worst crash I’ve seen was when my friend couldn’t break at a corner. He flew straight into a tree head first…lucky he was wearing armour ‘cause otherwise he wouldn’t have a shoulder left.

Enw: Vaughan Roberts Oed: 26 Sbort: Ychydig o bethau i ddweud y gwir, caiacio môr, dringo, ‘white water rafting’ a dyna fo dwi’n meddwl. O! A mynydda hefyd.
Sut wnaethoch chi ymglymu hefo caiacio? Mi wnes i ymglymu tua pedwar mlynadd yn ôl ac mi wnes i badlo arfordir De Lloegr. O fanna, mi wnes i ddechrau gweithio mewn caiacio môr yng Nghernyw. Yna symudais i Gogledd Cymru a dechreuais weithio yma i’r Caiacio Môr DU.
Be ydi’r gwahaniaeth rhwng caiacio arferol a caiacio môr? Wel mae caiacio môr yn fwy o, mewn ffordd, gwneud trip. Felly er ei fod o’n medru bod yn lleol iawn neu pell i ffwrdd, mae o’n fwy i’w wneud hefo’r teithio. Pan rydych chi’n mynd ar daith am dau neu dri mis. Y hiraf dwi ‘di bod ydi tua dau fis ond dwi’n adnabod rhywun sy’n gwneud trip o wyth mis o amgylch De America ar y funud. Felly’r prif wahaniaeth ydi da chi’n medru pacio’ch cwch a mynd!
Pa mor aml da chi’n mynd allan? Yn y haf dwi’n mynd allan yn bennaf. Yn ystod y haf buaswn i’n dweud fy mod i’n mynd allan tua pedair neu pump o weithiau’r wythnos am fy mod i’n dysgu hefyd.
Ble oedd y lle dwythaf i chi gaiacio? Dwi’n meddwl Ynys Mon ac roeddwn i’n dysgu.
Beth ydi’r amodau gwaethaf da chi ‘di padlo ynddo? Buaswn i’n dweud pan roedd y môr yn, math o lwmpiog, a tonnau mawr! Tydw i ddim yn gwybod beth sy’n dosbarthu fel y gwaethaf i ddweud y gwir. Ond dwi’n meddwl bod y môr yn medru bod yn arw ar adegau. Tydw i ddim yn padlo’n aml pan mae hi’n wastad oherwydd mae hynny’n weddol ddiflas.
Mae ganddoch chi’ch cwmni ffilm hefyd - Romany Productions, beth wnaeth wneud i chi gyfuno ffilmio hefo’r sbort? Yn sylfaenol i ennill incwm o rhywbeth dwi’n fwynhau. Mi wnes i ddechrau fel ffotograffydd ond yna mi es i i mewn i chwaraeon fel es i’n hyn, tua un deg naw. O fanna dwi wedi trio cyfuno’r ddau fel roeddwn i’n medru gwneud pob dim dwi’n fwynhau. A cael fy nhalu amdano! Mae hynny’n gymhelliad ychwanegol
Faint o hir mae prosiect ffilm yn ei gymeryd i fynd o syniad i ryddhad? Mae’n siwr ei fod o’n dibynnu ar y trip dwi’n ei ffilmio a be dwi’n ffilmio, os ydi hynny’n gwneud synnwyr. Os ydi’r trip yn un hir da chi’n amlwg hefo llawer mwy o ffilm i fynd drwyddo. Pan es i o gwmpas yn Iwerddon roedd gen i llawer o pethau i fynd drwy a’i roi at ei gilydd. Felly roedd hwnnw’n prosiect tymor hir, tua pedwar mis o waith. Ond buasai prosiect tymor hir yn cymeryd llawer llai o amser yn amlwg.
Beth sy’n dod gyntaf, eich camera neu eich caiac? Fy nghamera! O! Wel dwi’m yn gwybod. Y ddau i ddweud y gwir oherwydd dwi’n mwynhau’r ddau.
Be fuasai eich cyngor i pobl allan yn fanna buasai’n dechrau caiacio efallai? Blimey! Mae’n dibynnu ar be maent eisio ei ddechrau. Ond buaswn i’n dweud y dylai nhw fynd ar gwrs hefo rhywun sy’n gwybod beth maent yn ei wneud. Dylai nhw gael y gofal i gy wedi’i sortio. Mae o o hyd yn dda i gael rhywun sy’n gwybod y môr, yn enwedig o amgylch Cymru. Mae yna rhai amodau o amgylch fama y buaswch chi ddim yn ei ddisgwyl fel amodau môr arferol.
Name? Vaughan Roberts Age? 26 Sport? A few really, sea kayaking,
climbing, white water rafting and that’s about it. Oh, and mountaineering as well . How did you get involved with kayaking?
I got involved about four years ago and I paddled the south coast of England. From there, I ended up working in sea kayaking in Cornwall. Then I moved up to north Wales and started working up here for Sea Kayaking UK. What’s the difference between regular kayaking and sea kayaking?
Well sea kayaking is more, in a way, a journey. So even though it can be extreme locally or far away, it’s more to do with the touring. It’s when you go on an expedition for two to three months. The longest i’ve been is around two months but I know somebody who’s currently doing a trip of eight months around South America. So the main difference is that you can pack your boat and go! How often do you go out?
In the summer I go out mainly. During the summer i’d say that I go out about four or five times a week because i’d be teaching it as well. Where was the last place you kayaked?
I think it was Anglesey and I was teaching.
What’s the worst conditions you’ve paddled in?
I suppose it’s when the sea was, kind of lumpy, and big waves, I don’t know what classes as worst really. But I guess the sea can be pretty rough sometimes. I don’t often paddle when it’s flat because that’s a bit boring. You also have your film company – Romany Productions , what made you combine filming with the sport?
Basically to earn an income from something I enjoy. I started off as a photographer but then I got into sports as I got older, around nineteen. From there I’ve just tried to combine the two so that I was able to do everything that I enjoy. And getting payed for it! That’s extra motivation! How long does a filming project usually take from idea to release?
I suppose it depends on the trip that i’m filming and what i’m filming, if that makes sense. If the trip is a long one you obviously have a lot more footage to go through. When I went around Ireland I had a lot of stuff to sift through and put together. So that was a long term project, that was about four months of work. But a short term project would take a lot shorter obviously. What comes first, your camera or your kayak?
My camera! Oh, well I dunno. Both really because I enjoy both.
What would be your advice for people out there who might want to take up kayaking?
Blimey! It depends what they want to take up. But i’d say they should go on a course or out with somebody who knows what they’re doing. They should get all the safety sorted. It’s always good to get somebody who knows the sea, especially around Wales. There are conditions around here that you wouldn’t expect as normal sea conditions around here. yda ni yma yn Blaenau Ffestiniog a Chymru yn gyffredinol wedi cael ein cyhuddo o fod yn fwytäwyr gwiwerod sy’n sugno pres gan neb ond y New York Times. Yn dilyn ymweliad gan Landon Thomas Jr., gohebydd ariannol Ewropeaidd i’r papur, mae’r dref wedi ei ddarlunio fel lle rhyfedd ar y naw sy’n cael ei or-gronnoli. Byddai’n deg dweud fod y byd wedi cael portread anghywir o’r dref. Yn lwcus, oherwydd prosiect gronnol gan y llywodraethol, ‘dw i’n medru cywiro hyn a’i gyhoeddi mewn cylchgrawn. Tydi Mr Thomas Jr. ddim yn ymddangos yn hapus iawn hefo’r ffaith fod Cymru yn derbyn cymaint o arian gan lywodraeth y DU (fel petai Cymru a’r DU yn ddau le gwbl wahanol), gan ychwanegu fod y £14.6 biliwn mae Cymru yn ei dderbyn eleni yn llawer mwy na’r £2.9 biliwn mae Groeg yn ei gael. Nawr peidiwch a nghamddeall, ydw, dwi’n credu y dylwn ni fod yn helpu Groeg. Ond, dwi hefyd yn meddwl y dylwn ni edrych ar ôl ein hunain, da chi’m yn meddwl? Gadewch i ni gael un peth yn iawn. Mae’r trethi sy’n cael eu talu gan weithwyr yng Nghymru (yndi, mae nhw’n bodoli) yn mynd i lywodraeth y DU, nid yr un Groegaidd. Trwy gadw hyn mewn meddwl, dwi’n meddwl bod y pwyntiau cafodd eu gwneud bod ‘Cymru ddim yn
medru codi’r (arian) ei hun gan drethi a benthyg’ a ‘Mae Prydain yn llawer mwy hael hefo Cymru’ yn weddol amlwg ac amherthnasol mewn difrif ac mae o fwy fel cael ein pres ein hunain yn ôl. Beth bynnag, yn ôl yr erthygl yma, mae un dyn lleol yn ‘dal gwiwerod a cwningod yn aml i atodi ei ddeiet’. Wel tydw i ddim yn medru siarad ar ran ‘Phil Rogers’ pwy bynnag ydi o, ond beth rydw i’n medru dweud wrthych chi ydi nad yw hyn yn cael ei ddosbarthu’n arferol ym Mlaenau a tydw i o ddifrif ddim yn gwybod sut aeth hyn i mewn i’r erthygl terfynol. Ar ôl dweud hynny, efallai tydi o ddim yn syniad drwg ac efallai mai dyna yw’r ateb i ddyfodol ariannol llwyddiannus: ffermio gwiwerod. Gallai ein rhoi ni’n ôl ar y map ac gallai cig gwiwerod rhoi hwb i’r economi Gymraeg. Wedi’r cyfan, dylwn ni gymryd ychydig o feirniadaeth i ystyriaeth. Mae’r erthygl chwarae teg yn pwyntio allan bod ‘42 y cant (o rywbeth) yn mynd i dalu am wasanaethau iechyd a chymdeithasol, gan gynnwys presgripsiwn cyffuriau am ddim a gofal yn y cartref i’r henoed.’ Am ddoniol i ni feddwl bod bywyd yn wrth mwy nag arian. Mae o wedi cymeryd safbwynt Americanaidd i ddangos i ni’r ffordd ymlaen. Diolch Landon, achubwr bywyd… ish.

the Greek one. By keeping this in mind i think that the points made that ‘Wales cannot raise (the money) itself from taxes and borrowing’ and ‘Britain is far more generous with Wales’ is kind of obvious and irrelevant really and it’s more like getting our own money back. Anyway, according to this article, one local ‘often traps squirrels and rabbits to supplement his diet.’ . Well i cannot speak for ‘Phil Rogers’ whoever this is, but what i can tell you is that this does not classify as normal here in Blaenau and i really don’t know how this made it to the final article. Having said this, it might not be a bad idea and this may hold the key for a prosperous financial future: farming squirrels. It could put us back on the map and squirrel meat exports could boost the Welsh economy. After all, we might as well take some of the criticism on board. The article helpfully points out that ‘42 percent (of something) is destined to pay for health and social services, including free prescription drugs and home day care for the elderly’. How silly of us to think that life is worth more than money. It’s taken an American Point of view to show us the way forward. Thanks Landon, life saver… ish.
e here at Blaenau Ffestiniog and Wales in general have been accused of being money sucking squirrel eaters by none other than the New York Times. Following a visit here by Landon Thomas Jr. The European financial correspondent for the paper, this town has been depicted as a rather strange place that is over funded. It would be fair to say that the world has been given a slightly inaccurate portrayal of the town. Luckily, due to a government funded project, I am able to correct this and publish it in a magazine. Mr Thomas Jr. does not seem to be very happy with the fact that Wales is accepting so much money from the UK government (as if Wales and the UK were two completely different places) stating that the £14.6 billion Wales is receiving this year is way more than the £2.9 billion what Greece is getting. Now don’t get me wrong, yeah, i think we should be helping Greece out. However, I also think that we should be helping ourselves out, don’t you? Let’s get one thing straight. Taxes paid by workers in Wales (yes, they do exist) go to the UK government, not

Enw: Ellie McManus Oed: 23 Oedd dringo yn rhywbeth oeddech chi eisio ei wneud o oed ifanc? Yn ddi-os rhywbeth o ni ishio ei wneud o oed ifanc, mae llawer o atgofion fy mhlentyndod yn cynnwys bod i fyny coeden yn adeiladu swing neu rhyw fath o ffau coeden. Roedd fy ffrindia’ yn ei gasau o, ac fi oedd yr un oedd yn gorfod gwneud y prawf gofal bob tro. Oedd gen i fy nghi bach terrier yn dringo hefo fi hyd yn oed.
Pryd wnaethoch chi ddechrau dringo? O oed ifanc, ond ei gymeryd o ddifrif fel sbort, dim ond tua 3 blwyddyn. Dechreuais ddringo waliau tu mewn pan roeddwn i tua 7, yn y Clwb Plant yn Plas y Brenin a wedyn yn y ‘Scouts’. O ni dim ond yn mynd ei gymeryd o o ddifrif pan gyrhaeddais i tua 20... ond buaswn i dal yn dweud nad ydw i’n ei gymeryd o’n neilltuol o ddifrif.
Beth wnaeth wneud i chi benderfynu dechrau dringo? Ddaru ‘na ddim byd wneud i mi benderfynu dechrau dringo i ddweud y gwir. Mae o’n rhywbeth sy’n dod yn naturiol i ni, yn enwedig fel plant, ac roeddwn i’n cael archwilio hyn a datblygu hoffder i’r rhyddid o fod i fyny’n uchel.
Beth oedd o fel, y tro cyntaf wnaethoch ddringo? Oeddech chi’n ofn? Oedd o fel yr oeddech yn ei ddisgwyl? Tydw i ddim yn cofio’r tro cyntaf y dringais. Ond dwi dal yn meddwl ei fod o’n gyffroes pob tro dwi’n mynd. Yn ôl pob tebyg, mewn syndod dwi’n weddol ofn o uchder, felly dwi dal yn mynd yn ofnus. Ond mae hynny’n rhan o’r hwyl, a gwneud eich hun i wneud rhywbeth mae eich corff yn ofn o ac yn dweud wrthych am beidio. Mae’n deimlad anhygoel a byddaf yn cael teimlad grêt o ryddhad ar ôl dringo’n uchel.
Be fuasai eich mynydd/amodau/llwybr/uchder delfrydol i ddringo? Buasai fy nringaid delfrydol yn un gweddol cliché, ynys drofannol oddi ar Thailand, lle buaswn i’n medru mynd yn unawdol dros ddŵr dyfn, cynnes a glas, felly buaswn i ddim yn poeni am ddisgyn i mewn. Craig calchfaen diddorol hefo stalactidau anferthol yn diferu i lawr, mae hynny’n swnio’n cŵl iawn i mi. Dim yn uchelgeisiol iawn, ond hwyl dda.

ELLIE MCM Name Ellie McManus Age: 23 Was climbing something you wanted to do at an early age?
Definitely something I wanted to do from an early age, many of my childhood memories involve being up a tree building some sort of swing or tree den, my friends hated it, and I was always the one that had to do the safety test. I even had my little terrier dog climbing trees with me. When did you start climbing?
From a very young age, but taking it seriously as a sport, only for about 3 years or so. I started climbing indoor walls when I was about 7, at the plas y brenin kids club and later in scouts. I was only to take it more a bit more seriously when I reached about 20, but I still wouldn’t say I take it particularly seriously. What made you decide to start climbing?
Nothing really made me decide to start, its just something that comes natural to us, especially as children, and I was
MANUS allowed to explore this and developed a liking to this freedom of being up high.
What was it like, the first time you climbed? Were you scared? Was it what you expected?
I don’t remember the first time I climbed. But i still find it exciting every time I go. Surprisingly I’m quite scared of heights, so I still get scared, but that’s part of the fun, and making yourself do something your body’s scare of and telling you not to feels quite liberating and I get a great feeling of relief after doing a high climb. What would be your dream mountain/conditions/route/ height for climbing?
My dream climb I guess would be a bit cliché, a tropical island off Thailand, where I could go deep water soloing above lovely warm blue water, so no worry about falling in. Interesting limestone rock with huge stalactites dripping down, that sounds pretty cool to me. Not very ambitious, but good fun.

Enw? Iago Thomas Oed? 17 Oedd dringo yn rhywbeth oeddet ti isho neud o oedran ifanc? Ddim rili! Ar fy mharti penblwydd fe wnes I fynd I ddringo gyda fy nhad am y tro cyntaf Pasg dwytha.
Be’ wnaeth wneud i ti ddechrau dringo? Mi wnaeth Ellie (Ellie McMaun) mynd a fi allan i ddringo, a nathon ni ddechrau mynd mwy ar ol hynna. Mi wnes i fwynhau, gan fod o’n ffordd hwyl o wneud gweithgaredd corfforol.
Sut fath o brofiad oedd dringo am y tro cyntaf? Oedd gennyt ti ofn? Mi wnes i fwynhau, doedd gen i ddim ofn oherwydd ro’ni yn gwbod fy mod yn saff gyda’r offer i gyd, y rhaffau a ‘ballu. Neshi sylweddoli fod o’n llai i’w wneud a chryfder a mwy i wneud gyda nghydbwysedd.
Lle ti ‘di dringo? Mi wnaethon ni fynd i Dremadog a fyny Gogarth. ‘Natho ni hefyd ddringo fyny wrth chwareli Llanberis.
Be fyddai’r amodau/llwybr/uchder delfrydol i ti yn bersonol i ddringo? Rhywle sy’n gynnes a heulog fyddai’n ddelfrydol. Dwi’n meddwl fyddai’n hwyl cael trio ‘multi pitches’, gan fod o’n wahanol i ddringo ar lwybrau byr. Mae’n siwr ei fod o’n fwy dychrynllyd, ond ti’n gallu cael mwy o brofiad allan ohono.
Beth sy’n gwneud dringwr da, yn dy farn di?
Name? Iago Thomas Age? 17 Was climbing something you wanted to do at an early age?
Not really, at my birthday party I went climbing with my dad for the first time, but I only started climbing properly last Easter. What made you decide to start climbing?
Ellie McMaun took me out climbing, and we then started going more ofter. It was nice, because it was a fun way to do physical activities. What was it like, the first time you climbed? Were you scared? Was it what you expected?
I found it fun, and I wasn’t scared because I knew that I was safe, I had the equipment- the ropes and stuff. I realized that it was less to do with strength, as you needed to focus more on balancing. Where around Wales do you climb?
We wen to Tremadog and up Gogarth. We also did some climbing up the Llanberis quarries What would be your dream mountain/conditions/route/ height for climbing?
I think that an ideal place would be somewhere warm and sunny. I think it would be fun to try long multi pitches, as it is different from climbing short routes. It is probably a lot scarier but you’d get more of a kick out of it! What, would you say, makes a great climber?
Rhywun fydda’n meddwl cyn gwneud rhywbeth, rhywun sy’n cymryd amser i gynllunio yn iawn beth i’w wneud. Mae rhai pobl yn mynd allan i ddringo’n syth, ond y pobl sy’n meddwl a chynllunio sy’n gwneud o’n well, ac yn y diwedd mae’r canlyniad yn well iddyn nhw.
I think a good climber is someone who thinks about what they do before doing it. Some people just go for it, but its the people who think about what they’re about to do who do it better in the end.
Beth yw’r wers bwysicaf wyt ti ‘di ddysgu am ddringo?
The biggest lesson would be to challenge yourself. If you don’t challenge yourself you wont get to the higher grades. Its good to try it too.
Y wers bwysicaf dwi ‘di ddysgu ydi i bwsio fy hun! Dyna di’r ffordd ora’ i lwyddo yn y lefela’ uchaf o ddringo. Ma’n werth i drio pwsio dy hun!
Unrhyw gymorth ar gyfer pobl sy’n meddwl dechrau dringo? Just do it! Mae’n hwyl, ac yn brofiad da.
Whats the biggest lesson you’ve learnt about climbing?
Advice for people who want to climb?
Just do it! It’s really fun, and you get a good experience out of it.

Beth oedd o fel, y tro cyntaf wnaethoch ogofa? Oeddech yn ofn? Oedd o be yr oeddech yn ei ddisgwyl? Roedd y tro cyntaf i mi ogofa yn brofiad gret, dwi’n ei gofio fo’n dda. Dwi’n meddwl ei fod o’n normal i fod yn ofn. Mae o’n brofiad newydd, doeddwn i ddim yn gwybod beth oedd yn mynd i ddigwydd. Roedd y syniad yn mynd trwy fy mhen o “Be os ydi o’n disgyn? What made you decide to start caving?
Well a good mate of mine has done a lot of caving and one day he dragged me down and i was amazed about it all. What was it like, the first time you caved? Were you scared? Was it what you expected?
The first time I caved was a great experience, I remember it really well. I think that its normal to be scared. It is a new experience, I didn’t know what was going to happen. There was that thought going through my head of ‘‘what if it collapses? what if a rock comes off the ceiling.’’ To be honest
hollol newydd a oedd reit ar garreg fy nrws.
Lle o gwmpas Cymru ‘da chi’n ogofa? Am fy mod i’n weddol newydd i’r peth, dwi dim ond wedi bod i lawr ychydig o ogofau yn ardal Gogledd Cymru, ond ym mhen hir a hwyr dwi ishio’i ledaennu i gymaint o lefydd a gwneud tripiau ar hyd Cymru yn ogofa.
Ble ydi’r lle gora’ da chi ‘di bod yn ogofa?
Beth, fuaswch chi’n ei ddweud, sy’n gwneud ogofawr da? Wel mae’n bendant y ffaith nad ydych chi’n clawstroffobig a’r ffaith nad ydych chi’n wirion ac yn gwneud pethau gwirion. Oherwydd mae mwyngloddiau’n medru bod yn lefydd perryg iawn os nad ydych chi’n ofalus. Am ei fod hi mor dywyll yna, da chi’n methu llawer o bethau, mae’ch tortsh pen dim ond yn goleuo’r llefydd lle da chi’n edrych.
Mae’n rhaid iddo fo fod yn Cwmorthin, mae o’n anferth! Buaswch chi’n medru bod i lawr yno am 8-9 awr a buaswch chi dim ond wedi gweld y ffracsiwn lleiaf o’r mwynglawdd. Mae o’n arwain o Cwmorthin ac yn y diwedd gallwch fynd i fyny i’r mwyngloddiau Oakley. Ond mae o’n daith! Mae cymaint i’w weld, sut mae’r mwyngloddiau wedi cael eu cerfio a’u cloddio, y siamberi y gwnaethant fomio a hen adeiladau sydd o dan ddaear! Mae cymaint o lefydd hefyd y gallwch abseilio i fynd yno.
Beth ydi’r gwers mwyaf da chi wedi’i ddysgu am ogofa?
it was more than I expected, it opened my eyes to a whole new world which was right on my doorstep.
which are underground! There are also many places that you can abseil to get to.
Being quite new to the whole thing I have only been down a few caves in the north wales area, but eventually i want to spread it to so much more places and making trips all over wales Caving.
Well it definitely has to be the fact that you are not claustrophobic and the fact that you are not silly and do silly things. As mines can be very dangerous places if you are not being careful, because it is so dark down there, you miss a lot of things, your head torch only lights up where you are looking.
Where around Wales do you cave?
Whats the best place you have been caving?
It has to be Cwmorthin, it is just massive! You can be down there for 8-9 hours and you have only seen a tiny fraction of the mine. It does lead from Cwmorthin and you can eventually go up to the oakley mines. But it is a trek! There is just so much to see, how the mines have been carved and dug, the chambers which they bombed and old buildings
Byddwch yn ofalus, dyna ydi’r wers fwyaf gallwch ddysgu yn fy marn i.
What, would you say, makes a great caver?
Whats the biggest lesson you’ve learnt about caving?
Just be careful, that is the biggest lesson you can learn in my opinion.

ales isn’t just a funny little place on the edge of England with rain, sheep and strange names, oh no. Hiding away in those hills is some of the best riding you’ll find anywhere on this planet. It was in those steep, unforgiving mountains that the Athertons and many other top British World Cup racers honed their skills. So when Adrian “Bud” Bradley (who is also the fastest man in the UK with a bus pass) sent through these snaps of the new DH centre they’re building up at Blaenau-Ffestiniog (pronounced Blynow Fest-in-i-og, sort of...) we got quite excited. Bud explains it all better than we can: Right guys and girls, quick post up here to keep you informed of the latest news and developments of the new and exciting downhill and freeride trails being built here at Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales. It will boast two black DH runs and two freeride trails with more doubles, tabletops and berms than you can shake a stick at! All built by track building legend Phil Saxena and local firm Xtreme Trails. Add to this a fantastic minibus uplift service (which will be approximately seven minutes from the bottom to the top of the trails), two pump tracks, a jump site, a visitors centre with a cafe and showers.
