Ask for help: professional, if you can afford it, and from friends and communities, if you can’t. (The Village is here for you.) Extend a hand of friendship, kindness and patience to someone else who needs help too. Helping others is literally the best medicine. Life. It's a long and winding road (you can’t cut to the good part). Darkness only lasts 'til dawn, and oh baby, baby, it’s a wild world. If you’re down in the hole, hold on to your high hopes. We’ll get through, one way or the other and… okay. That’s enough song titles!
ADVICE FOR A BAD DAY… with song titles Oh, my goodness. It’s all a big, messy shambles right now, isn’t it? It feels as if the world has just… I don't know… gone bananas?* Some places, of course, feel more bananas, than others. SA, naturally, is right up there, with the “tough”. While we might not win the hardship Olympics (Ukraine!), we’re on the podium for sure. So. Strength to us, Warriors. This is no time and place for the wobbly or weak-livered. We all know that now, laid on top of the normal entry-level South African challenges, (inequality, uncertainty, criminality… ugh, all of it) we’ve also got the mad tiger’s tail of the pandemic, with its financial scorched earth and mental health wounds, to cope with too. And parents have a big job to do. Scorched earth or not. We not only have to keep everything together for ourselves, but for our families too. So. What do we do? How do we parent with optimism and positivity, when we are rocking and rolling on our own Because, foundations?makeno mistake, a decent parent has to be the North Star, the family rock, the cheerleader and believer in a better future. That, in a nutshell, is just our job. The good news, most aspects of being a good parent are not expensive. The bad news? Parenting is hard. To be positive Vanessa 1495 posts 44 650 comments 46 400 members month...This and brave when things are vile, is a job description from hell. No jokes. I think – maybe predictably – that bloodyminded optimism, patience and kindness are necessary parental ingredients in a cold climate. Plus, song titles! Here, from me, is some advice for coping on a bad day. It might not help, but I hope it does, just a little. On a bad day… remember to be kind to yourself first, and then be kind to your kids. Be patient. This turmoil too might pass, but you’ve got to stay in the game to benefit if it does. Some days that’s the best thing you can hope for. Keep plodding through the awful days and just get through the night. Your landscape might look different, you might just see a slither of light on the horizon, tomorrow. One that isn't visible today.
On the grimmest days… there’s music! And the hope that life will be better tomorrow.

For 3 days and 3 nights I have done what they do. I’ve not listened, I’ve forgotten to do what’s expected of me and I’ve shirked all my responsibilities. I forgot to re-stock the fridge, I forgot to cook dinner, I forgot to take them anywhere fun on Sunday. I even went out and bought myself an ice cream – double scoop nogal – and neglected to buy them one. I was on such a roll I even toyed with forgetting to buy electricity!* Was this an easy thing to do? No, it was not. Well, not initially anyway, but then I really started leaning into it . Was it a kind thing to do? Definitely not. BUT, it seems to have been affective. I seem to have made my point because last night when the ever-hungry 15-year-old was making them toast for the third night in a row (while I kicked back with Netflix and a mega pint of red), I think he had a moment of clarity because he put the peanut butter back in the cupboard! AND closed the cupboard door!!!! Then the 10-yearold put his plate in the dishwasher Mum 1 - Boys 0 Small victories but I’m feeling like a winner today. You’re welcome. Contrary to general belief, the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) is not a curriculum, but rather a highly advanced set of examinations that require learners to apply the knowledge they learned in an intense creative and intellectual manner. Our curriculum provides them with the intellectual skills to succeed at the more challenging questions posed in the examinations.

Learners are taught in small class sizes, often use tablets in class and can acquire an academic matric by writing the NSC exams, IEB exams or Cambridge exams (certain Curro Select schools) at the end of Grade 12. OUR SCHOOLS HAVE SMALL CLASS SIZES With independent education comes the expectation of excellent education and personal attention in class. At Curro, our small class sizes, which vary from a maximum of 25 to 35 learners per class (depending on the school model), ensure that learners can receive personal attention from their teachers during lessons. In addition, learners build close relationships with their teachers over the years, which further helps to ensure that they receive assistance in a manner that meets their individual needs.
As we are committed to providing an excellent education, many of our schools offer highly specialised subjects such as Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD), Further Studies in Mathematics, foreign languages such as Portuguese, and Robotics. We have been offering Robotics as a subject for several years, and many of our schools have fully equipped laboratories that help learners to develop 21st-century skills and knowledge such as coding and automation. In addition, while the subject is generally included in our school fees, some schools offer Robotics as a cultural club or extramural activity. Proudly South African, the IEB has an impressive track record with many of their NSC and Advanced Programmes in Mathematics and English graduates going on to study at elite international universities. While that might not be an aspiration of all parents, the benefits of an IEB qualification have come into Koa Academy highlights the advantages of an IEB education in a globalised world
focus in this era of globalization. Parents do want their children to have an education that opens doors for them when it comes to further studies and employability. Anderson says, “Opportunities for remote working are increasing vastly and we want our children to be able to join the pool of global workers so that use their talents wherever and however they can in a world of work that is rapidly changing and radically evolving. There’s no doubt that solid international recognition for your school qualification can be a significant enabler of modern careers, which is one of the reasons that Koa has opted for the IEB system. However, it is important to note that the IEB also has a particular style and system of teaching and assessing that is also a significant advantage. It’s less about memorisation and more about the application of learning which sets kids up better for success at university which has a similar approach.”

Koa Academy, a high engagement online school is IEB-accredited. The Independent Examinations Boards (IEB) governs the curriculum and assessment standards of private educational institutions in South Africa. Koa Academy’s Principal, Mark Anderson says, “The IEB offers internationally recognised qualifications which are becoming increasingly important to today’s South African parents who are raising kids likely to become global workers, or who may want international study options available to their children once they have finished school. Many see the advantages in their children achieving an IEB National Senior Certificate that is well-recognised as equivalent to the UK’s AS Level.”

The pandemic years shut down a lot, but also created unexpected openings and many digital escalations. For instance, school choice has been irrevocably changed across the world. Online school may not be the solution for every child, or every family, but many got a taste for the greater flexibility and wider scope in education that can be offered in the digital realm. When it comes to decisions about school, geography has ruled supreme, but this is no longer the case. Going the digital school route, parents can place more emphasis on other considerations such as the different curriculum and assessment systems that can help set your child up for success.

BULLYING
Let's talk about It’s time to talk about bullying in schools. You can’t fix what you don’t know is broken.
What to do if your child has been bullied? First, assure your child that silence is how bullying is perpetuated. If they say they can handle it (encourage them to seek out support from their peers or a trusted teacher) and give them a timeframe, say ‘if it happens again this week/month, we are taking it further as a family’. And if they are the bully? Well done for acknowledging that your child is victimising another. Your challenge? To uncover the ‘why’ in a non-judgemental and compassionate way and how to move forward. Perhaps seek the support of a professional who can help you to navigate this situation and you may want to check in with a professional to help examine your family’s unique framework and what may need to be addressed.

We look forward to meeting you and your precious children. “Life should be all living, and not merely a tedious passing of time; not all doing or all feeling or all thinking – the strain would be too great – but, all living; that is to say, we should be in touch wherever we go, whatever we hear, whatever we see, with some manner of vital interest. The question is not – how much does the youth know when he has finished his education – but how much does he care?”

PREPARE TO SUCCEED
Flexible one-on-one learning is the focus at hybrid school Thrive, where personalised teaching plans are developed for students.
Everyone has a story or a memory of their own experiences at their school and end of year results show that both co-educational and same sex schools are all incubators for many bright young minds.
SINGLE SEX vs CO ED?
SINGLE SEX vs CO ED?
There is only one answer: your child holds the key. If your child is easily distracted then a new, vastly different environment may prove disruptive. Does your child struggle in situations with many competitive views? A co-ed environment may not be a first choice. Ultimately – facilities and access to opportunities should be considered across both. That and of course – the ethos of the school when it comes to your child as a whole being and not as a gender-specific student. Expert opinions…. AGAINST There are no advantages to single-sex schools, which may foster gender stereotyping and sexism “in a world that’s far more diverse than ever before”, a US psychology professor has said. Diane Halpern,a past president of the American Psychological Association, said the basis for single-sex education needed to be re-examined when there was no research to show that boys and girls learn differently. Attending single-sex schools could be in fact be disadvantageous for children and teenagers, with evidence to show segregation caused people to develop strong stereotypes and in-group bias, said Halpern. Few environments, apart from schools, were single-sex, she said. “We don’t have sex-segregated workplaces so why would we have sex-segregated schools?”
FOR The evidence is unequivocal: for example, researchers at Cambridge University who examined the effects of single-sex classrooms in schools in different neighbourhoods, including rural, suburban and inner-city schools, found that “using singlesex groups was a significant factor in establishing a school culture that would raise educational achievement.” Also, pupils at the single-sex schools developed better organizational skills, and were more involved in classroom activities than their coed counterparts. In boys’ schools boys feel free to be themselves and develop, to follow their interests and talents in what might be regarded as nonmacho pursuits: boys in single sex schools are far more likely to participate in choirs and orchestras and learn Latin. music, arts and drama.
Ready to make the leap? What’s the ‘right’ decision?
Teaching happens in small mixed-age groups online and there is a strong focus on self-led mastery. There are also opportunities to engage in person at various physical hubs in the Cape.

25 FOMO #14
Parklands College is a technology-infused private school (from Grade R to 12) that prizes learner collaboration and creative solutions. The school focuses on relevant, project-based learning and prides itself on its Art, Design, Science and Engineering departments within its innovative learning environment. Coding and Robotics has been integrated into our curriculum from Grade R to 9. These programmes foster an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, and our teams have represented South Africa in the World Robot Olympiad every year since 2015. Invention and rapid prototyping are encouraged through the use of TinkerCAD, AutoCAD and 3D printers in Art, Design, Drawing Technology and Engineering Graphics and Design.
Parklands College seeks to foster the innate potential of its learners, allowing each individual to imagine, explore and discover a personal journey through our “Growing Minds” concept. This encompasses the five global competencies that we believe are essential for our learners to adapt to the changing world and future workplace. Learners are encouraged to be creative and critical thinkers, to communicate and collaborate effectively, and to be responsible citizens.
In our Secondary Faculty, our Film, Animation, Sound Engineering and App Development extension courses are on offer in our media studios and coding incubator. We are proud of our young entrepreneurs who have released four digital albums on iTunes, as well as 11 learner developed applications on the Apple App Store, which have had approximately 100 000 downloads to date. Our “Holodeck” houses our immersive learning facility where learners can experience representations of the real world using Virtual Reality simulations. Parklands’ internationally recognised offerings include CompTIA certifications, AUTOCAD, Adobe Photoshop Visual Communication certification (ACA) and the ICDL. These give our learners career focussed, industry and workplace recognised skills and certifications. Parklands College continues to explore new and emerging technologies in order to keep abreast of world trends in education and give our learners every opportunity to build their own bright futures.
A technology-infused learning environment prepares learners for a bright future
We have been recognised by Apple as an Apple Distinguished School (ADS), since 2016, for our continued innovation, leadership and excellence in education – only one of two ADS schools in Africa. Our school has been recognised specifically for providing an authentic, technology-infused learning environment, where through a multitude of opportunities, we inspire our learners to explore their imaginations and creativity, find their purpose, and build their own futures. As an Apple Distinguished and Google Reference school, we use both platforms to provide a unique teaching and learning experience. Learners are introduced to iPads in Grade R, progressing to the Apple 1:1 environment beginning in Grade 1 through to Grade 12. Each child’s device becomes a personalised learning platform where its integration into learning and life becomes second nature.

GRADE 7 Preparing a child for a (relatively) seamless introduction to high school is not only about academics but if they need support in certain areas or a brush up on foundation skills, consider some assistance.
WHAT YOU CAN DO IF YOU NOTICE A SLIP IN FOCUS OR GRADES… Sometimes it’s a matter of going back to basics. Reining in social commitments, focusing on routine at home (teens need sleep!), limiting screentime and good nourishment are key. Family connection and time in nature are also solid foundations for grounding our teens.

When else would a tutor be beneficial?
There’s no doubt about it, private tuition is on the rise. Should we be alarmed? Is it just how it is now? Here are some reasons that might help you make a ‘to tutor (or not)’ decision.

• ASK FOR ACADEMIC ACCESSIBILITY Available lesson material, additional resources (visual or otherwise) and alternative methods of addressing an academic challenge are incredibly useful for teens thirsty for information delivered in a way that works for them.
• NON-VERBAL CUES Neuro-divergent teens have acute abilities on picking up on nonverbal cues – including negative attitudes from both peers and teachers and it’s vital that compassion and a commitment to understanding your child is a priority for the school.
• DON’T LIMIT EXPECTATIONS Although asking for teachers’ flexibility is a must for children who process information differently, this does not mean your student should be challenged any less.

• CAMPAIGN FOR COMMUNICATION & AWARENESS Ask your school for their policy on educating scholars on neurodivergence – if nothing is in place, consider introducing them to trusted resources yourself. A school that has a policy of regular communication with you about your child’s psychosocial welfare is a school that has their interests at heart.

Here's how to advocate for your neurodivergent teen:
Neurodiversity includes scholars who may identify as autistic or as having Asperger’s, as being ADHD, having dyslexia or dyspraxia. Many schools offer a neurotypical environment which can prove challenging to both neurodivergent students as well as their peers and teachers. We have a long way to go in understanding and embracing neurodiversity in our mainstream schools.

“I was a border in my school years. Here is my take on it. First, I was not a difficult girl. It was a great school, and I have many good stories to tell… BUT I was very, very homesick all the time. I only went home in the school holidays. I think if I could have gone home more often, I would have been much happier. So, think carefully on the distance from home. Also, the girls there who were ‘shipped’ off to boarding school for discipline reasons, were the naughty girls who were always in trouble and doing bad things… I would say be careful of making the problems worse. BOARDING SCHOOLS
– Michelle Franz “In this time (of withdrawal into self) the parents are rejected in favour of the peer group. Friends are very important now and morals come from the peers. So: boarding school, far from the abusive brutality of popular myth, actually is a safe, structured environment where teenagers are: 1. Surrounded by their peers 2. form deep and lasting bonds 3. Have trained, experienced adult parent substitutes who have dealt with more adolescents than we will in several lifetimes and who are not fazed by them, and who provide a secure and boundaried structure that contains them and keeps them safe. A. When a Village mom asked if it would be best to send her child who had discipline issues off boarding school, or keep him at home, opinion was divided… send him away it will prove his point of you abandoning him and not being in control. I stuck it out. Nearly 17 now and definitely improving.”
Q: Should they stay, or should they go?
“I think sending him to a posh boarding school may amplify the entitlement.”
“No. Boarding school cannot fix what is missing.” – Katherine Cass “Sending him away might very well be perceived by him as you wanting to get rid of him. A case of out of sight, out of mind, passing the ‘problem’ onto others. Historically speaking boarding schools were there to enable parents who lived in outlying areas like farms, to afford their children the opportunity to attend decent schools. Don't use boarding school as a form of parental control, it could backfire.”
– Caroline Calburn “Please don’t try make your son conform, different is good. Maybe just a forwardthinking school?” – Tiffany Fay Leck
– Amanda-Leigh Robinson “Send him to a school that will accept him for his good points and only if he wants to go. Not to change him. My son would never fit in a traditional boarding school. Not in a million years. And I wouldn't expect him to. Boarding school is not the solution, but another school might be.” – Paula Marais

If you don't have the option of these role models, then boarding school might not be a bad option. Trust me I have considered it many times.”
In the middle… “I would first send him to a therapist to find out what is at the core of his resistant behaviour. First find out what the resistance on his side is masking: Feeling misunderstood at school? Being angry at his dad? Feeling depressed? Does he need full-time counselling and/or medication? After that, one can decide a course of action. He needs an environment that will get him the support he needs and mom the tools she needs to help him, as well as take care of herself. Meanwhile, mom needs to disengage from his resistance. Give him choices and consequences in a loving way and let him choose his reactions, until you have more information from an experienced and skilled therapist.”

But as my spoiled rotten husband says, “Lion Schmion. Seen one? You’ve seen them all.”
If you take a ruler and draw a diagonal line from Cape Town to the northernmost tip of South Africa, where the Pafuri and Luvuvho rivers meet at the gloriously named Crooks’ Corner, you will find perfection. Simple as that. It is quite far. Should you make the journey? Er… Yes. Yes. YES. First things first: There are no prides of lion, packs of wild dogs or cheetah on demand at Pafuri. You do not make the six-hour drive from Hoedspruit for a colour-by-numbers zoo experience. It’s testament to just how special this area of the far northern Kruger Park is that it now rates amongst my very favourite bush destinations, even without the safari rock stars making a regular appearance. To be honest, most game reserves now have an eye on the bucket lists of their international guests and ensure they deliver the Big 5.

As the very metropolitan Plus One of a person who writes about game reserves, he is often irritated that I love to spend hours watching the same animals we’ve watched many times before, doing, let’s face it, what they do every day. In the lion’s case, he says “lioning around”. And maybe he has a small point. There comes a time when if those of us who love the bush are asked what we’d really like to see on a game drive, the answer is, “Something different”. And that’s where Pafuri knocks it out the (Kruger) Park.

wateringly expensive Boulders and Ebony Lodges, but at a fraction of the price) to its magnificent Fever Tree Forest, abundance of precious, ancient Baobab trees, and the breath-taking Lanner Gorge. We were visited in our room one afternoon, for a delightful half an hour, by a casual elephant (we could have reached out and touched him, he was that close), then watched long winding lines of elephant families splash across the river in front of our room. And as if that wasn’t enough, on one evening bush drive we were gifted the most incredible sighting of the elusive aardvark. Pafuri is home to more general game than any foreign tourist could ask for, including my personal favourites, warthogs. They have survived a terrible drought and are now flourishing. Hooray! Putting our elephant guest to one side, our Pafuri highlights reel included seeing more hippos than we could count at sunset at Crooks Corner, with a pink and purple Zimbabwe and Mozambique in the background, and observing a Nat-Geo style incident with 5 vulture species. The area is a bird watchers paradise with more than 350 bird species in the neighbourhood, which is just a joy to behold. Keen photographers will love the fact that Pafuri is not your average bush canvas – everything we photographed looked beyond exquisite! Foodies won’t be disappointed either, the food is superb… and there’s the bonus of getting to say goodnight to the adorable kitchen bush babies each night as you stagger off to bed after another first-class dinner. If you can go, guys, just go. Life is short, and if you can end just one day drinking gin and tonic as the sun sets over the baobabs of the Pafuri? In my opinion, that’s a day well worth living.

Redemption song…
Kruger was occupied by several indigenous tribes before it was proclaimed as a game reserve. Most of those people were forcibly removed from the area by the without compensation.apartheid government,Veryfewland claims have been resolved in the Kruger, but in a historic deal forged with the South African government, one exception was the Makuleke, who had occupied this area for generations. in 1998, a creative resolution was reached. Instead of insisting on the right to reoccupy the land, which would have compromised Kruger’s wildlife heritage, the Makuleke clan agreed to enter into a private-sector partnership to develop new tourism facilities in the North. Pafuri is now leased, and the lodge provides work and funds to support the local community. Ask for the brilliant Andile to guide you, if you visit. Listening to the stories of the grandparents and greatgrandparents who have lived in the area is a humbling experience… as it should be.
SLEEP REMEDIES FOR TWEENS AND TEENS
2. Elidh Venning “My girls, partner and I always sleep better after we have been adjusted by a chiro, but simple interventions make a big difference as well. Having a good hard bed and decent pillows are an investment worth making. Making sure that our rooms are dark and quiet, no screen time before bed no electric appliances in bedrooms and low light throughout the house through the evening, all helps.”
As Tracey says, the ready-tomix sleep aid, Supersleep, from Bioteen, is an invaluable aid in the battle for deep, healthy, teen sleep.
