Considerations Most brides tell me that they would like to achieve a natural, yet polished, look on their wedding day.

For flawless skin, cut down on refined sugar and increase your intake of essential fatty acids around six months before your wedding. Avoiding facials in the three weeks leading up to your big day will also minimise the risk of breakouts or adverse reactions to products. Also, get lots of sleep and drink plenty of water. A top tip to reduce puffiness around the eyes on your wedding day is to lightly steep two chamomile teabags and leave them to chill in the fridge. Apply these to closed eyes for five minutes when you wake up and use eye cream from the fridge for bright, wide-awake eyes.

26

SCHOOL

makE-up

A pplication The most important consideration when planning your look is that the camera (and flash) fades away make-up. I can’t stress enough that if you wear only the same amount of make-up as you do each day, you could look a little washed out, especially if you’re wearing a white gown. The best thing to do is wear 30% more blush than you normally do and accentuate your eyes or lips a little more. Long-lasting make-up for the big day is half about preparation and half about the right products. Massage in a moisturiser with SPF suited to your skin type followed by a good base primer (I think Laura Mercier’s primers are the best) and leave to sink in for five minutes before applying foundation. I also use an eye primer, recommending Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Original to my clients – it’s excellent if you want your eyeshadow to last all day and into the night! During the ceremony, if you’re wearing a veil then avoid lip gloss or dark lipstick. Instead, moisturise your lips, blot and apply a lip tint. This will give you colour without transferring it to the veil. Make sure you remember that eyebrows really do frame your face, so if you haven’t done so before, I recommend having them professionally threaded once and then maintaining the shape yourself. Make sure they are even in length and width, drawing in tiny strokes in pencil if you need to. Don’t use too much shimmer on your face as it will bounce back from the camera – use it only sparingly in one area – so an eyeshadow or a touch on the top of your cheekbones…but no glitter! And my final tip is to keep oil-free compact powder or blotting paper, concealer and your lipstick or gloss in your handbag – or in your maid-of-honour’s bag – for touch-ups to keep you picture-perfect for your whole incredible day!

BRIDAL

BEAUTY

louisE clarkE: bEauty call At Beauty Call we know how important it is that every bride looks and feels perfect on their special day. Whilst making sure your skin is looking great, keep your hair in top condition as well by getting it trimmed every 6-8 weeks. You could also try using a deep conditioner at home once a week for ultimately soft and nourished locks. On the day, most brides employ a professional hair and make-up artist to achieve that perfect look, but it’s important to book a trial in advance so you can try out and discuss various styles that match your face shape, skin colour and theme of your wedding. If you gather together a scrapbook of pictures of how you would like your hair and make-up to look, it will really help the professionals to visualise your ideas. A good idea is to have your hair and make-up trial before you have your pre-wedding shoot with your photographer – that way you can see what your hair and make-up looks like in your professional photos! To avoid heavy make-up, eyelash extensions are a really great way to accentuate your eyes. There are various different types, so have a chat with your make-up artist at your consultation about what will suit you. My last tip is to enjoy planning your wedding; it really is the best day of your life!

Spring

At Eden Blooms, we consider every element of an arrangement – from scent, texture and colour, to that extra personal touch – for sensational seasonal arrangements. Spring flowers are particularly special due to their fragile and transient nature. Available for only a short period every year, it is vital to have them at their very best and create designs with their specific qualities in mind. These delicate flowers lend themselves to more intimate and subtle arrangements rather than a huge splash that one might expect from the larger, bolder year round species. Whether you choose spring flowers for your bouquet or table centres, be sure to select a design that flatters the delicate nature of these very special flowers.

Autumn is one of our favourite seasons after the bold pinks and blues of summer. We excitedly unpack our warm and vibrant autumn flowers and berries, eager to rediscover the wonders that autumn brings. A favourite of ours at this time of year are the huge vintage heads of hydrangea in a whole range of colours. Gone are the vibrant pinks, whites & lilacs from our summer wedding season and in come the fabulous faded greens, muted purples and deep, deep reds. The abundance of Dahlia varieties in autumn are perfect for wedding bouquets and displays – from the jewelled, oversized blooms to the delicate, peachy hues of the daintiest of flowers. But, we couldn’t let our autumn favourites go by without mentioning the dramatic appearance of the hanging amaranthus, as it cascades from any autumnal floral display in its textural hanging lengths of lime green and wine red. Autumn offers a bride endless choice of beautiful blooms for her wedding.

BLOOMS

You might think your flower choices would be limited in the chilly months but actually, winter blooms can often be the most creative: imagine a huge pedestal arrangement of open, rich red amaryllis dispersed with the dark brown branches and fluffy, white catkins of pussy willow. In this season, there are so many contrasting colours and textures to inspire beautiful and striking floral displays. Of course you have the traditional displays of holly, berried ivy, roses, cinnamon and cones in deep reds, dark greens and gold, but then you have the simplicity of a pure white honeymoon tulip bouquet, or a highly scented narcissi posy. Seasonal displays can be designed to perfectly complement your winter wedding.

Choosing the right photographer for you is essential, and arguably the most important decision for your day; it’s their job to preserve memories for you and your loved ones. Start by selecting the style you want, from the traditional to the more creative and increasingly popular reportage shots. Booking your photographer is not something to rush into – do your research and find ‘the one’. Spend time reviewing their portfolios and make sure that you meet up with them too, it is important to feel comfortable with them. Referrals and testimonials can help to confirm your decision, along with seeing if they have any awards or press coverage. Know your price limit upfront and make sure that you agree exactly what’s included within your package.

F I R S T Look An increasingly popular trend, modern couples are opting to set up a first look photo opportunity, ahead of the ceremony and away from the wedding party. The first time you lock eyes with your loved one is a tender and intimate experience, which can be best captured in private with these photographs.

Looks

You want your hair and make-up to be perfect, achieving a flawless look throughout the day, so make sure that you have a trial first and that you are completely happy with the results. It can prove very useful to take a camera along to your trial too, as some foundations are highly reflective and can appear white on film. Your make-up should last all day, so put it to the test ahead of your wedding; you don’t want to find out on the day that is has faded and you have not looked your bridal best on camera. Ensure that your make-up is waterproof too, and that you take some along for touch-ups on the day. It’s worth noting that if you choose a high fashion look, this will date quickly – a timeless, natural look can often be a far better choice for your wedding day. Grooms pay attention too; it is advisable to carry a tissue or blotting cloth that can take away the shine, especially on a hot day.

w E R E Engaged ,

Engagement photos not only provide you with a set of beautiful pictures to celebrate your news and share with friends and family, but they help you to feel at ease in front of the camera. This will result in a picture perfect wedding day, as you feel comfortable and ooze confidence.

T H E Location

When choosing your wedding venue, think about the locations of where your wedding photography could take place. Consider both in and outdoor options, as you can’t always rely on the weather! Take into account lighting and ensure that your photographer visits the venue ahead of the Big Day. Could props complement the setting? From wellies in a field to releasing lanterns into the night sky, props are a great way to add some personality and create some really unique photos.

Timeline

One of the most useful things you can do to help both the photographer and yourself is to create a timeline of the day. Decide when and where the photos will take place, allowing plenty of time in the schedule. Obviously things can change on the day but it is useful to have an advance running order to keep things organised. A less-stressed bride is a happy bride. And a happy bride makes for great photos!

Bright

and E a R lY

Always allow for last minute emergencies and start the day at least one hour ahead of schedule: if you run over, you won't be stressed and your photos can start on time. If you finish earlier, well that just means more photos of a happy bride and groom!

Delegate

To keep you stress-free and looking great in your pictures; get help. Let someone else take care of things for you, whether it's a coordinator, friend or maid of honour. All questions should be directed to that person and you will be able to calmly concentrate on being beautiful for the camera.

52

Relax a n d H a v E Fun

The best photos are those of a happy bride and groom, so just relax and enjoy every second of your special day.

YOUR

DREAMS

Your

Day of Dreams Leave it to the Toastmaster

As you plAn every intricAte detAil of your Big dAy At northBrook pArk, hAve you considered A toAstmAster or mAster of ceremonies to help your dAy run seAmlessly?

The Toastmaster or Master of Ceremonies takes on numerous roles and responsibilities during your celebration, but their overall duty is to ensure your day is effortlessly memorable. From the initial planning to the wedding itself, the Toastmaster ensures every stage of your wedding runs smoothly, allowing you and your guests to relax for the whole of your special day. Northbrook Park wedding couples often choose the services of experienced Toastmaster; Jay Tough. Familiar with the venue, Jay pays meticulous attention to detail while maintaining an unobtrusive presence, so that you can enjoy your wedding as you have planned it. From liaising with suppliers to meeting the bride and groom on arrival with a glass of Champagne, Jay takes us through your Wedding Day at Northbrook… My day as Toastmaster begins before the arrival of the bridal party and guests at Northbrook Park. On arrival at the venue, I liaise with the Northbrook Team and your caterers, discussing your day through its entirety. I then walk around the venue, checking that all the carefully planned details have come together; the decorations are up, the games are in the garden and the chairs are available for the older family members. After talking to the florists, confirming that all the flowers are in place, I check that the ceremony music is set up and is ready to play in the Vine Room, or liaise with the musicians and help them to prepare. In the Orangery, I take care of all the little details that will ensure your reception runs smoothly. I hide the presents for the groom’s speech, make sure your guest book is available…and that the pen works! After testing the music and setting it up, I check the cake and place the knife next to it – preparing everything for those memorable photographs.

56

As your Toastmaster, I also help the ushers with the seating plan, relaxing the readers and calming the nervous groom. I often find my experience in wedding attire comes in handy as I tie the ties and often pin the button holes for the groomsmen!

57

YOUR

DAY

OF

DREAMS

As the guests arrive, I welcome them before arranging the bridal processional party and sending them down the aisle. The next bit is up to you! When the ceremony is complete, I greet you as the newly married couple with a glass of Champagne and escort you through to the stunning gardens for the drinks reception. As your guests follow, I begin to collect their cards and gifts so they can relax and enjoy the occasion. Liaising with the catering manager and staff, canapés and Champagne are served to all. I circulate throughout the mingling guests, informing them of the itinerary and table plan and how the Orangery is arranged. So that you can continue to enjoy your day without the concern of timekeeping, I keep an eye on the clock, liaising with the photographer and videographer. I assist with the photographs, injecting a bit of fun whilst rounding up your family and guests for your planned shots, to make sure the photo list is completed effortlessly. After calling the guests to the receiving line (if requested) and once they are seated, the top table is announced and led to their places. I then prepare for the grand entrance of the bride and groom, “Please be upstanding for the most important couple of the day... the BRIDE & GROOM”. The couple is led through the tables to their seats, always to rapturous applause. I make sure that I coordinate what can be a difficult task to complete for a busy wedding couple -circulation of the guest book. I start the music and help prepare for any entertainment during the wedding breakfast, as well as chatting with the guests, acting on behalf of the hosts; making sure everyone is relaxed and enjoying the day. When it’s time for the speeches, I introduce each speaker and stay close by (with a tissue to hand, just in case). Once the cake is cut, the ladies are always desperate for the throwing of the bouquet which is a lot of fun and helps the guests to really get into the party mood. My role as Toastmaster almost complete, I gather all the guests around the dance floor. Paying one final tribute to the couple, it’s then time for my final act… to introduce the first dance.

a n Indian w e d d i n g tell us a bit about yourselves…how did you meet? We met when I gate-crashed his boys’ holiday in Barcelona six years ago. I tagged along with a friend…even though I didn’t know anyone else, including his best friend Siva! It was obvious to everyone that Siva and I instantly clicked and we started dating when we got back to the UK.

how did he ProPose? I had a feeling Siva was going to propose at some point on our travels to East Africa in 2011, but in typical male fashion, he waited until the last day of our 10-week trip to do it! After all that suspense, it was worth the wait – I couldn’t stop myself from crying.

did you choose a theme? Most Indian weddings are over-the-top extravaganzas, but we wanted ours to be more of an elegant white wedding with splashes of bright colour. My dress and Siva’s suit were white and gold, matching the Vine room where we had our ceremony and we incorporated colour with the flowers.

what catering did you choose for your wedding? As the weather was so lovely, we had our champagne reception outside in the walled gardens. Our guests loved exploring the gardens and playing with giant Jenga as well as being entertained by the magician we booked. Later in the evening, Club 182 served the menu of delicious Indian food that Siva and I had helped choose.

where was your dress from? I wanted to fuse east and west, so I found pictures of an Indian wedding dress and an English wedding dress I really liked and took them to Viraaj; a brilliant designer. Together we put them together to create my perfect dress – one of a kind.

Photography by Laurence Photography

what were your flowers like? We used Wed-in-Style for our flowers, as they also provided the Mandap (canopy) for our ceremony. Because we had a Hindu ceremony we needed to incorporate red, but we also wanted orange (our joint favourite colour) to feature, so we chose arrangements of beautiful, varied flowers which were red, white and orange.

were there any sPecial touches on the day? We named each of the evening tables after our favourite places in the world, ranging from our home town to first dates and holidays overseas. Each table name card had a collage of photos of us at these places on the back and an explanation of why they were special to us.

how would you summarise your day? From the moment I walked down the aisle it was just a wonderful, dreamy day. Any small things that go wrong on the day can’t affect those happy memories.

what is your advice in terms of Planning a wedding? Be organised. We had a big folder with different compartments for all the suppliers and major purchases, this was really handy to keep leaflets and price quotes together. And don’t be afraid to ask people for help! They will love being involved and it will relieve a lot of your stress.

a Barbadian t h e m e how did you meet your husband? We first met at Royal Ascot Ladies Day – I was there with my family and he was with friends. He says that he 'spotted' me across the course, but we didn’t actually speak until we saw each other again on the train! We live in the same area and used to catch the same train into London, so it’s there that we got to know each other a bit better. We were together for three years before we got married.

how did he ProPose? When we were in Barbados, Duncan organised a candle lit dinner on the beach (stunning setting) and got down on one knee. At first I thought he’d fallen off his chair, then after fumbling around in his pocket he couldn’t get the box open, so it became quite a funny moment! Of course I said yes… and burst into tears.

did you have a theme for your wedding day? Because we had a lot of guests and large bridal and groom parties, I really just wanted to keep things simple and stylish with a classy feel.

did you have a drinks recePtion? Yes, we had a champagne and canapé drinks reception at Northbrook Park. As we got engaged in Barbados and Duncan’s dad was from there, we wanted to incorporate this into the day - so we had a steel band playing to set the mood. The peacocks wandered, the steel band played and the champagne flowed. Everyone really loved this part.

where did your wedding breakfast take Place and what was your menu like? Photography by Rich Cooper

We had our wedding breakfast in the Orangery. Fusion Catering took charge and they were fabulous. Our menu was designed (deliciously) by them: we had a starter of smoked salmon wrapped around salmon mousse with a rocket centre, beetroot glaze and baby pickled vegetables. Then the main course was lemon and garlic marinated chicken with spring onion mash, beans and carrots. For dessert we had Sicilian lemon tart with a compote of blackcurrants and crème fraîche. …This was also a very popular part of the day!

were there any sPecial touches or surPrises on the day? Well…my new husband singing Elvis as he started his speech was certainly a surprise! "Wise men say only fools rush in, but I can’t help falling in love with you" got some big cheers from the guests and I will remember it forever.

what was your favourite moment? Walking down the aisle with all the guests either side and seeing my about-to-be husband!

how would you summarise your day? In one word – perfect.

what is your advice in terms of Planning a wedding? Don’t stress! And do exactly what you want to do, not what other people might suggest.

a b i g Italian w e d d i n g how did you get together? Although we went to the same school, it wasn't until we left that we met properly through my best friend Veronica. I let it slip that I thought he was cute and Veronica (who was my maid of honour) played cupid for us! We’ve been together since then – just over 9 and a half years.

how did he ProPose? After a meal for Tom’s birthday I thought we were heading to the tube station, but parked on the road was a Rolls Royce Phantom – Tom told me that it was our ride home! As we were being chauffeured through London, he pulled out a box of chocolates that he claimed his colleagues had bought him for his birthday. I took a bite, but only realised after Tom told me that 'I wasn't very observant' that my beautiful sparkly ring had been hidden underneath the chocolate!

what was the theme of your wedding day? We kept it simple and elegant, with an Italian influence. The band played traditional Italian music and during the meal we had the Italian tradition of being frequently interrupted by everyone clinking their glasses, shouting 'bacio, bacio' (which means ‘kiss’)…until the bride and groom stand up and kiss. It was a lot of fun!

where was the ceremony? St Dunstan’s Church in Woking, which is a modern Catholic Church with plenty of space for our 200+ guests.

did you have a drinks recePtion? Yes, in the Vine Room. We had a Spanish duo playing guitar which created a lovely atmosphere as the champagne flowed.

Photography by Galilleo

where did the wedding breakfast take Place and who catered? We held our wedding breakfast in the Orangery with a delicious, Italian inspired menu. We had a four course meal and Jacaranda did a fantastic job at catering and helping with the running of the day.

where was your dress from? My dress was from Caroline Castigliano. I wanted to go for a romantic, vintage style and I think my dress captured this – I felt like a princess the moment I tried it on.

what were your flowers like? My bouquet was a beautiful collection of orchids, calla lilies and stephanotis flowers. For my bridesmaids I chose delicate bunches of paperwhites with long stems tied in an ivory satin ribbon. To complement the colour scheme, we had aluminium buckets full of purple seasonal flowers which included purple freesias and these were placed on the tables.

what was your favourite moment? There were lots of moments from the day that were special, but the best part was our first dance. A friend sang one of our favourite songs and the whole wedding party showered us with confetti, wrapping party streamers around us in true Italian tradition.

how would you summarise your day? It was a big, fat, Italian wedding full of all the things we both love; family, friends, music and amazing food. We couldn’t have wished for a more magical day.

The hotel is ideally located for exploring St. Ives, with its ancient fishing harbour and many boutiques, restaurants and cafes just a short stroll away. Spend afternoons meandering around the town’s maze of winding streets. St. Ives is famed for its clear air and outstanding scenery, attracting world class artists for generations. Explore the vibrant local arts scene, which ranges from tiny independent galleries tucked within the cobbled streets, to The Tate St. Ives and Barbara Hepworth Museum. All are within easy walking distance of the hotel and well worth a wander into town. While visiting, why not take advantage of the spectacular Cornish outdoors? Walk some of the South West Coast Path and take in the outstanding views, book a kayaking or paddle-boarding tour, or if you’re feeling really adventurous – give coasteering a try. There’s an activity for all tastes, right on the hotel’s doorstep. The idyllic retreat for a romantic honeymoon close to home, the hotel is also perfect for a pre-wedding pampering getaway or hen do by the sea.

St Tropez

You don’t have to travel long haul for a dreamy destination. Still close to home, St. Tropez in the south of France has a timeless elegance that makes it hard to beat for a sophisticated honeymoon. St. Tropez is one of the French Riviera’s liveliest towns, where the twisting, cobblestone streets of the Old Quarter open to tiny squares and a quay lined with tall pastel houses overlooks a port filled with millionaires’ yachts. Hang out on the beach or in one of the chic outdoor cafes and you're bound to spot a celebrity or two. La Bastide de Saint-Tropez is a secluded hotel, set away from the hubbub but just a short drive to the action. For ultimate luxury, book one of the Provençal-style apartments with its own living room, Jacuzzi and terrace over the gardens. With a large pool and tropical gardens, the hotel is an oasis of tranquillity. But, if you want to explore the stunning coastline further, guests can charter the hotel’s 72-foot luxury yacht San Lorenzo for a day cruising on the Mediterranean. Just a few minutes away from the famous Ramatuelle beaches and Saint-Tropez's harbour, this luxury destination is a honeymooner’s paradise.

Rodney and volcanic mountains rising from azure waters, this couples-only resort is a picturesque honeymoon destination. Rejuvenate in one of the resort’s signature pools or for ultimate indulgence, book into either the Presidential or Grande Rondoval suites which each has its own private pool. Sample cuisine from around the world in eight international restaurants, including the renowned overthe-water Gordon's. Then end the evening enjoying unusual and local entertainment from fire dancers and village festivals to saxophone serenades from the pool tower.
