FALLING IN LOVE WITH PHYSIOTHERAPY AGAIN

Thinking back to why I went into Physiotherapy all those years ago, was to the age old cliché, “to help people” and enable them to be the best they can be. Sadly, in the developing NHS Physiotherapy Service’s are being quashed and rehabilitation opportunities for clients are being diminished. Having worked in the NHS for thirty years and really appreciating all that it has given me, I began to feel that I was not able to give back to the service and patients. Unfortunately, as time went on, “I felt like I had to fight on every

front; be an advocate for patients, apologising to relatives for lack of service or continuity in care, supporting and motivating the team whilst upholding the service, trying to keep waiting lists down and beds appropriately filled. Feeling deskilled, frustrated combined with the worry of an ever changing NHS, I decided reluctantly, to move into private practice.

For ten years I’d been working on an associate basis for PhysioFunction alongside my NHS contract picking up clients as I could fit in around work and family life. This had given me a taste of the numerous opportunities and fulfillment the private sector could provide me. I experienced the ability to work with clients through their whole rehabilitation journey and found this stimulating and rewarding. Working as an independent practioner or with an agency was not for me. Going into private practice I was concerned about feeling isolated or unsupported clinically. Working with PhysioFunction allowed me to choose whether to continue to work as an associate or on an employed basis full or part-time. At PhysioFunction I am supported clinically by the Clinical Directors and my peers which is something I felt was particularly

important to me. Time is now not my enemy. I am now empowered to treat and follow up with clients for as long as they clinically need. This time enables me to discuss and set meaningful SMART goals. Being able to provide a personalised service means I am challenged and have the option to think outside of the box and use the skills I felt I was losing. I now have adjuncts that were not previously available to me such as: Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES), Exoskeletons and Hydrotherapy. I also now have the ability to step patients up and down the service as and when the client needs.

Falling In Love With Physiotherapy Again Continued from page 1 Of course there is no getting away from paperwork but reports requested by a client or other agencies for example, CCG’s, Case Managers and Solicitors are purposeful and meaningful with an obvious benefit to the client. It is also important now with so many private physiotherapists out there to maintain relationships with such referrers. Often our clients come to PhysioFunction having been told they are “as good as they are going to get”. That is my opportunity to really prove physiotherapy works. Our clients are only too happy to share their success stories with the hope they can motivate others to just keep going. We also hope that if we shout loud enough NHS Services may be funded better enabling others to reach their full rehabilitation potential. At PhysioFunction wherever the opportunity arises we work with our colleagues in the NHS and seek to build on this. This is why PhysioFunction is thrilled to be involved with Therapy Expo working to bring Physiotherapists together to really promote how Physiotherapy can change lives.
THERAPY EXPO 2015, HAILED AS A HUGE SUCCESS Over 2,000 therapy professionals and key names in the therapy world came together at Birminghams NEC, on 25th & 26th November at the hugely successful 2015 Therapy Expo. Here, delegates enjoyed the large exhibition and educational conference over a two day period for plenty of networking, CPD accredited education,

practical advice and product sourcing. Delegates, including senior therapists, and management across the NHS and private care, listened to and learnt from industry leaders such as Jon Graham, Clinical Director, PhysioFunction; Simeon Niel Asher, Bsc(Ost.), Niel Asher Healthcare; Joanne Elphinston, Physiotherapist, Performance Consultant and International Lecturer; John Doyle, Learning & Development Manager, Physiotherapy, Nuffield Health; Shavit Enosh, Head of Certification & Training, AposMedical and Sports Technologies Inc. and Dr Ian Horsley, Regional Lead Physiotherapist (NW), English Institute of Sport, with other key opinion leaders to explore key topics within the therapy industry.
In total, and thanks to four conference education streams, visitors took advantage of over 40 hours of accredited CPD training and development – saving hundreds of pounds compared to the cost of accessing the same quality and quantity of education elsewhere. This was confirmed by Sibghat Ullah, Physiotherapist, Nottingham City Centre Partnership “I like the balance of this show. The variety of topics on the seminar programmes challenges my thinking and I like the mix of therapists that the show attracts. I’ve really enjoyed chatting to people on the stands and I’ve got lots of information to feed back to my team. Continued on page 3

The Hands-on Training Demo Zone was a huge success at Therapy Expo 2015 and taught delegates keen to hone essential skills and learn about new techniques Visitors to The Demo Zone took part in interactive workshops run by experts, teaching skills they could use immediately back in clinic. You could also see demonstrations of the latest products.
Kinesiology Taping Therapy Expo Delegates were guided through best practise on how to prepare the tape for application, how to safely and effectively apply it to the lumbar spine, shoulder and knee.
Caroline Phillips, Chiropractor, Altrincham McTimoney Chiropractic Clinic
Spinal Injuries Delegates were able to experience the ReWalk Exoskeleton first hand, trying the system themselves in a controlled environment. Clinical studies have shown that standing and ambulation in the ReWalk exoskeleton can provide health benefits, such as: more natural alignments, improved bowel and bladder function, improved sleep & reduced fatigue, decreased body fat and most importantly decreased Pain. Stephen Ruffle, National Sales Manager for Rewalk Robotics said: “This is the first time we’ve exhibited at in the UK and we’ve had a fantastic response. The product is very new so for us this show is all about raising awareness. This show is all about education; delegates come here to learn. We’ve been able to do some demos and engage with delegates. It’s been excellent.” NEW AND IMPROVED DEMO ZONE RETURNS IN 2016
It’s a very accessible show and a brilliant price for a two day event.” The mix of exhibitors and educational talks was well received by delegates, including Desmond MacAulay, Physiotherapist, Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic, who commented “The content of this show is brilliant. The sessions are informative and relevant to what I do and the trade floor is interesting; I’ve seen lots of new products that I can use in practice. I run my own business, so this has been a good event for me.” Among the key innovations on offer at this year’s event were the NEW Demo Zone and Open Theatre – two forums developed to allow delegates to observe real life demonstrations by industry professionals and learn best
practice. Headline-making presentations included talks on ‘movement and anti-movement’ by Joanne Elphinston and ‘anatomy trains and functional movement – knee injury rehab’ by James Earls. The new Neuro-rehab Technology Zone additionally allowed delegates to see and even try-out the very latest technologies first hand. In a bustling exhibition hall, perfectly complimenting the conference programme, over 100 exhibitors offered visitors one-stop access to demonstrations of the very latest in therapy products and services covering rehab technology, taping, finance, walking aids, clinic services, electro therapy equipment, hydro therapy and many more.
“The conference was packed full of interesting, thought provoking lectures. The demonstration area was definitely worth the entrance fee.”
“Therapy Expo had plenty of amazing speakers and seminars for Demo Zone demonstrations to keep your attention.”
“Kinesiology taping is important because it allows a practitioner to interfere with the pain signals sent to the brain. It can be used to decompress an area of swelling, distribute physical stress, normalize muscle tone and even delay fatigue.”

Paul Colker, Medical Director of RockTape, who led the sessions said: “It’s our third year here and it’s been the best ever. The NEC works much better as a venue for us and we’ve been really busy on the stand. This show is really good for us. It’s a good opportunity to sell products and talk to people about the education we offer. Speaking in the lecture theatres and running sessions in The Demo Zone is key for us, it makes this one of the most important shows in our calendar.”

Manager, Rewalk Robotics said “This is the first time we’ve exhibited at in the UK and we’ve had a fantastic response. The product is very new so for us this show is all about raising awareness. This show is all about education; delegates come here to learn. We’ve been able to do some demos and engage with delegates. It’s been excellent.”
“The business lectures have been extremely helpful for running my practice. There a good selection of stands here too, which will also help my business. It’s a very cost effective event and I’m impressed with all of the free food and drink.”
Paul Lane, Therapy Expo organiser comments on how the show has developed into a real opportunity for those with a passion for the therapy market to come together to drive new technology forward. “We are delighted that so many visitors and exhibitors attended this year, endorsing our move to launch a show like this at truly international venue like the NEC.
“The lectures have been very informative. There’s a good variety of sessions on offer and the quality of the speakers are high. I’ve been able to learn about the latest evidence and it gives you the reassurance that you are doing the right clinically.”
Thanks to the support of key organisations such as the AACP, Co-kinetic, the CTN, MACP, Physio Function, STA and media partners such as Rocktape and the amazing Exceed magazine. Therapy Expo is fast becoming the place where therapy changing conversations take place.” Planning for Therapy Expo 2016 has already begun, taking place 23rd – 24th November at Birmingham’s NEC, and includes a dramatically expanded CPD accredited seminar programme, expanded theatres, more workshops, live demonstrations and product launches, plus an even bigger exhibition.

Movement patterning following sports injury The Demo Zone offered a unique chance to experience one of the most important tools used for rehabilitation and movement performance, Dynamic Movement Skills (DMS).
Acupuncture Awareness Week – AACP Acupuncture spotlight on sports With the 2016 Olympics in Rio approaching, we’re sure to have plenty of sporting achievements to be proud of as a country again this year. The vital role that trusted health professionals, such as Physiotherapists, play in ensuring our athletes perform at their best, remain injury-free and recover quickly and safely when those unavoidable injuries do happen, cannot be understated.
Demonstrations covered an introduction to DMS as a rehabilitation and performance tool for health practitioners, followed by a chance to experience this movement re-patterning method in a practical demonstration. Mike Antoniades, Rehabilitation and Performance Director of the Running School who ran the sessions said: “The aim of the workshop was really to give clinicians practical experience with how DMS can stimulate and change the neuromuscular system and give them a clear understanding of when they would use it, how they would use it and what outcomes could be achieved.” “DMS is very important because helps to refine and improve gross motor skills. It’s benefits include development of; movement, balance and coordination in children; and improvement in speed, agility, explosive power and turning ability in athletes”
We have seen in that past how athletes turn to acupuncture to help improve performance without the use of drugs and with few to no side effects. The many benefits athletes enjoy include pain relief, increased circulation, reduced inflammation, quicker recovery times from injuries & workouts and relaxation of tense muscles. Top athletes including Daniel Kowalski, Olympic gold, silver and bronze medallist in swimming used acupuncture to help recover from a shoulder injury, Basketball superstar Kobe Bryant for his leg injury and Vincenzo Nibali who won the Tour de France 2014 used acupuncture everyday throughout the 3 week race.
healing, physiotherapists trained in acupuncture can safely and effectively employ a variety of needling techniques for the treatment of both acute and chronic sports injuries. The advantage of acupuncture with physiotherapy is that patients benefit from the integration of acupuncture into a complete and holistic management of their sports injury. This includes the development of an appropriate exercise and stretching programme that takes in to account tissue trauma, muscle imbalance and normal movement patterns. Such exercise and stretching programmes often see better results in conjunction with acupuncture due to its analgesic effects, aiding a faster recovery. Acupuncture Awareness Week takes place this year 7th – 13th March, Now is time to spread the word to make potential patients aware of acupuncture as a treatment. For more information on how acupuncture can aid your patents recovery.

Preventative care is the backbone of new NHS survival plan, DH says
All therapists have a role in fighting the obesity epidemic
Department of Health priorities set out in a new report can only be achieved through a renewed focus on prevention, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy has said.
Multidisciplinary services, provided as part of a coordinated, integrated and person-centred care pathway, will be key to ridding our society of its obesity epidemic, health watchdogs have said in new guidance.
Responding to the 'Shared Delivery Plan: 2015 to 2020' , published in mid-February, Professor Karen Middleton, chief executive of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists, said: “A relentless drive towards a more prevention-focussed and integrated NHS is critical to save money and improve care.”
Signalling an increased role for therapists in the management of obesity, new National Institute of health and Care Excellence (Nice) obesity guidance calls for a coordinated approach to service delivery. Nice says: “A person centred, integrated approach to providing services is fundamental to delivering high quality care to adults who are overweight or obese.” already booked early places at the 2016 Therapy Expo conference and exhibition taking place on November 23-24 at the NEC, Birmingham.
The Government vision sets out a 10-point plan for building capacity and achieving efficiencies in healthcare services. Key to the success of the plans will be direct access to physiotherapy for people presenting at GP surgeries with back pain and musculoskeletal conditions, says the CSP. According to Professor Middleton, this will “free up millions of appointments” and steer a clear pathway towards the goal of delivering seven-day NHS services.
Over the two days of this fast-growing event, physiotherapists, chiropractors, sports therapists and osteopaths will take advantage of motivational accredited CPD education in streams covering: musculoskeletal, sports injuries & biomechanics, neuro rehabilitation and acute care. World-class speakers and experts in these fields will be on hand to provide thought-leadership while the chance to network with colleagues and peers and see some of the industry’s
The new standards, published in January 2016, set out a raft of recommendations which create opportunities and challenges for therapists today. Among these are: • prescription, supervision, and progression of appropriate physical activity to increase muscle strength, flexibility, and endurance, and sustain energy output to enhance and maintain weight loss under safe and controlled conditions • management of associated conditions such as arthritis, back pain, and other musculoskeletal and chronic conditions, such as heart disease • provision of personalised lifestyle advice, taking into account individual attitudes, beliefs, circumstances, cultural and social preferences, and readiness to change • support for family members and carers who will support the initiatives to maintain a healthy weight.
There will be a dedicated MSK stream at Therapy expo 2016 The 2016 Therapy Expo conference and exhibition, taking place on November 23-24, at the NEC, Birmingham, will provide therapists with a much-needed platform to discuss their response to the new obesity guidance. Over the two days of the conference and exhibition, some 40+ hours of CPD, as well as unrivalled networking opportunity and contact with the very best products and services providers, will be on offer to physiotherapists, chiropractors, sports therapists and osteopaths interested in beating the UK’s obesity epidemic. Therapy Expo event executive Paul Lane said: “A wide range of therapists and specialist practitioners will be required to provide the necessary input and expertise to achieve the multidisciplinary management of obesity. Therapy Expo is set to become the goto forum where their ideas can take shape.”
Other conference streams include: Sports Injuries & Biomechanics: But new roles for therapists will demand education and training in a wider range of therapies and specialisms, and across the NHS and private sectors. With these goals in sight the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (MACP) and the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Orthopaedic Medicine and Injection Therapy (ACPOMIT) have
most exciting new products and services will give therapists practical support for daily practice. Thanks to the expert management of healthcare event organisers Closer Still Media, Therapy Expo 2016 is growing exponentially into the go-to event for all therapists in practice today.
Covering the prevention, occurrence and treatment of a variety of injuries and pathologies. For 2016 the stream will cover testing of weight bearing alignment and the influence of this on rehabilitation. Neuro Rehabilitation: A dedicated stream covering conditions such as Strokes, Spinal Cord Injury, MS, PD and Head Injuries, looking at hands on rehabilitation. Acute Care: Looking at interventions and treatments for patients with acute respiratory, medical and neurological problems, from Non Invasive Ventilation to Muscle Testing.
