SEPTEMBER 2016
THE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SHOW – THE PROFESSION’S EVENT For Occupational Therapists, this show is almost unprecedented in the amount of CPD that it offers. The education you can get at this show is really exciting and there’s something for everyone, no matter what field you work in. For me, it’s vital to keep up to date with new products and services, so the trade floor has been particularly useful. Mary Booth, Occupational Therapist, Specialist Advisor, CQC
As anticipation builds once again for The Occupational Therapy Show, there are many delights in store for all members of the occupational therapy team. With only weeks to go, the completely free event is full to bursting with motivational lectures, practical workshops and live demonstrations presented by speakers at the very forefront of occupational therapy. Among those headlining the exceptional educational programme will be: • Professor Carolyn Unsworth, Professor of Occupational Therapy, CQ University, Melbourne • Suzanne Rastrick, Chief AHP Officer, NHS England • Chapal Khasnabis, Project Manager, Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology (GATE) World Health Organization • Professor Gillian Leng, Deputy Chief Executive, NICE • Michael Mandelstam, Independent Legal Trainer and Consultant • Gaynor Sadlo, Professor of Occupational Science, University of Brighton • Jane Reynolds, Community Forensic Mental Health Practitioner, Northern Health and Social Care Trust • Avril Drummond, Professor of Healthcare Research and Occupational Therapist, University of Nottingham …to name but a few!
From L to R, Top row: Professor Carolyn Unsworth, Suzanne Rastrick, Chapal Khasnabis and Professor Gillian Leng. Bottom row: Michael Mandelstam, Gaynor Sadlo, Jane Reynolds and Avril Drummond

Education Partners
Hours of accredited CPD education will also be on offer throughout the two-day conferences dedicated to each area of the profession. What’s more, the extensive trade show will enable you to source great deals on all the cuttingedge products and services you need to enhance your daily practices and grow your business. Leading suppliers from across the industry will be in attendance including Invacare, AKW, Ottobock, Prism, Drive Medical, Seating Matters, Oxford Hoists, R82/Etac, Handicare and Sunrise. Also, look out for the on-stand exhibitor education where you can meet suppliers and gain CPD education all at the same time! In order to build on the success of previous years and continue to meet the evolving demands of such a fastpaced profession, The Occupational Therapy Show 2016 will offer a host of features for you and your team to enjoy.
NEW! Research In Practice education programme This series of seminars will provide an introduction to research in practice in occupational therapy. All the presentations have the strapline ‘All you need to know about…’ and will cover key issues in qualitative research, systematic reviews, becoming a researcher and translating research into clinical practice for Occupational Therapists (OTs). Chaired by Avril Drummond, her session will provide an introduction and general overview of research in occupational therapy. She will outline the current situation and suggest future directions. The importance of providing evidence to underpin practice will be underlined and significant trials presented in detail. The relevance of research to all occupational therapists will be highlighted.
PMG returns to The Occupational Therapy Show Posture & Mobility Group (PMG) are happy to confirm that we will be official supporters of The Occupational Therapy Show for the second year running. We had a great time at last year’s event, meeting lots of Occupational Therapists (OTs) working in various different fields; some of you may remember us as the exhibitors with the vegan chocolate buttons! Lots of lovely OTs became members of PMG for the first time at the show, picked up some of our print journal editions, and entered our postural management quiz (for a chance to win yet more chocolate!). If you have not heard of us before, PMG is a membership organisation and charity with the aim of sharing knowledge and promoting best practice in the field of posture and wheeled mobility. This year we have decided that rather than telling you what we are about, we’ll show you! We are, therefore, teaming up with our colleagues at the National Wheelchair Managers Forum (NWMF) to host a training event at the show. The event will include sessions about wheelchair and seating assessments, offering practical solutions to common clinical problems, to help you offer the best service to clients requiring a wheelchair and/ or special seating. It will be perfect for you, if: you refer clients to wheelchair services, are looking to work in, or have recently started working within posture and mobility. We are really looking forward to working with the team at The Occupational Therapy Show once again, and to meeting new OTs who want to get more involved in the field of posture and mobility! If you would like to find out more about PMG, and want to join the group for free to keep up-to-date with our activities, simply go to: www.pmguk.co.uk. You can also find out more about NWMF, by going to: www.wheelchairmanagers.nhs.uk.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) formerly known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, is a poorly understood condition which affects many people in the UK and across the globe.
BURNING NIGHTS Every year there are around 15,000 new cases of this chronic neuropathic condition. CRPS can cause a person to experience persistent, severe and debilitating pain. The condition may develop after an injury, surgery, stroke or heart attack, but the pain is out of proportion with the severity of the initial injury. The cause of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome isn’t clearly understood and CRPS awareness in the UK is low. With low awareness and understanding of CRPS both globally and in the UK, it is vital that a support system is in place for those who suffer from this condition. At present there is no Government funded support system for sufferers, that is why Burning Nights was founded. Burning Nights offers detailed information and CRPS support for sufferers, their loved ones,
The OT Show
carers, friends and families. We have an annual 1 day conference where anyone affected by CRPS can come and hear from top professional speakers as well as speak to other sufferers or families in similar situations. However we also have regular support groups, an online telephone for support, an online forum available 24/7 and social media channels support. Burning Nights aims to improve the quality of life for sufferers, carers, families and friends. Increasing knowledge of CRPS on a global and national scale in the UK is a necessity. Through the products on offer, awareness and support of CRPS can improve through increased visibility and information. As a charity we also provide CRPS awareness sessions and

presentations to healthcare professionals such as OTs, physiotherapists, GPs and nursing staff. We are able to tailor these sessions to your specific requirements to ensure your team get the maximum benefit of our experience and knowledge of this condition. Why not contact us or visit us at this year’s OT Show at the NEC in Birmingham and find out more about our CRPS, our charity or fundraising events? Wealden Rehab Wealden Rehab are going from strength to strength with our new product range! OT’s the length and breadth of the country are recognising the value of providing shower seating that meets the users’ needs in terms of postural support and pressure prevention. RAZ, launched just four years ago, is now one of the most sought-after products for clients who require protection from tissue injury whilst showering. A customer recently said “I found that none of the shower chairs on the market could provide me what I required. I tried the New RAZ shower chair and this gave me everything I needed to able to sit in a shower chair in a wet room. This showering experience had transformed my life and I cannot recommend the RAZ shower chair qualities enough”. Having a selection of seat modules which all incorporate the ability to move the aperture location for the best sitting position, RAZ is ideal for those who are looking for a chair which will stand the test of time. For those who may find sitting a challenge, the BARELLA trolley offers a safe place for showering. The deep-sided padded liner provides protection against involuntary movement and allows the trolley to be used as a shallow bath, while the optional rising backrest offers extra postural comfort for users. We launched a complete range of ceiling hoists last year at the OT Show and have seen a steady rise in the number of customers now asking for the products by name. The ROOMER S is a unique product which allows

room-to-room hoist transfers without the costly and time-consuming construction work usually required to modify buildings. With its twin-strap design, transferring users through a doorway between two separate tracks is a simple and smooth process. The HELIQ ceiling hoist has a full data management platform to protect your investment – this allows you to monitor how the hoist is used on a daily basis, what charging routine is being employed, and if any overloads or low-battery warnings have occurred. We are building our team to offer assessments and product support throughout the UK. Based in Chatham, we are in an excellent location to travel across the country and you will often see us at conferences and team meetings demonstrating how our products can help you deliver results, protect your budget and make your clients happy. For more information, visit us on stand F14 at The Occupational Therapy Show, or call us for a discussion on 01634 813388. Email us sales@wealdenrehab.com or tweet us @wealdenrehab.
Continued Professional Development should be at the centre of our practice The College of Occupational Therapists Code of Ethics, clearly states, ‘you are personally responsible for actively maintaining and continuing your professional development and competence, and for participating in learning opportunities over and above those which are legally required for your work.’1 The Occupational Therapy Show continues to assist you in achieving this objective by offering a variety of opportunities to learn through a variety of leaning modes: 1. Come and hear Michael Mandelstam speak about the key parts of the Care Act that are relevant to occupational therapists and the importance of “personalisation” and flexibility in meeting people’s needs. 2. Measuring client outcomes is essential to determine if clients are improving, benchmark services and gather evidence to support the effectiveness of therapy. Come and hear Carolyn Unsworth from Australia talk about how this can be achieved in a client centred approach. 3. Attend our research in practice sessions chaired by one our leading academics, supported by OT researchers who can inspire and enthuse you to get involved in work place research. Visiting the exhibitor’s stands can up date your product knowledge. You can see what is new out there, critique and quiz them on the features and benefits and then complete a reflective practice piece on the potential benefits to you and your client group. But remember that CPD can also be personal. Are you looking at a change in your career direction, do you want to move from a mental health setting to the paediatrics? Do you want to look at the emerging or private markets? If so, you can discuss all this and more with the 300+ exhibitors expected at the show. These seminars and conversations can still be written up as part of your portfolio and could lead to a complete change in your working life. Finally don’t forget to visit the College of Occupational Therapy stand to see what specialist section you may wish to join, offer your help as a mentor, become part of a regional group or just chat to the staff on practice issues. We all need to continue to learn throughout our career and accessing that knowledge can be achieved in a variety of ways, The Occupational Therapy Show is an excellent FREE accredited CPD opportunity that will provide you with a wealth of knowledge and a huge opportunity to reflect on your practice and improve the outcomes for your clients or patients. 1. OT Home Assessments now covered by new CDM Regulations? The new Construction Design Management Regulations 2015 came into force last summer bringing all domestic design and installations of any size and value into the scope of the new regs. With little publicity for the revised regulations many surveyors, designers and contractors have been slow to react. Domestic homeowners who instigate work on their homes also now have responsibilities under the new rules. How does this affect OTs? Firstly the OT should examine exactly who is the ‘controlling mind’ behind any construction work. When considering the situation of a DFG grant managed by social services OTs or Technical officers it may be considered that the controlling mind behind any home adaptation is not the recipient of the grant, the customer, but the team behind the process of controlling all aspects of the management of the project. The controlling mind should be considered to be ‘the Client’ and not the recipient of the grant. The regulations give clear responsibilities for Clients who must appoint competent designers and contractors. The regulations also make clear that any designer appointed by the Client who is involved in domestic building works has prescribed responsibilities. They are named under the regulations as Principle Designers. Their responsibilities start from the feasibility stage of a project considering how any design works will impact on contractors who carry out the works up to the appointment of a suitable and competent contractor who is also named under the regulations as The Principle Contractor. The pre design aspect of their responsibilities would include a Refurbishment and Demolition Survey which checks for any hazards in the workplace prior to commencement of a project and in particular the presence of asbestos. For an OT who prepares scheme drawings and writes the specification this would seem to bring this aspect of their work under these new rules with little doubt that they are the Principle Designers for that project unless the Client has made separate arrangements for this duty. If the OT is part of a team which includes a technical officer or surveyor then
The OT Show
it would be reasonable for this person to take responsibilities for the designer role, however the arrangements should be made clear between the OT and the other team members as to who is the designer and, as importantly, who is the controlling mind behind the project – The Client.
Join our twitter chat! @TheOTShow will be on @OTalk_ on the following dates, so make sure you follow us and join in the conversations between 20:00 - 21:00.
Why is this so important? Construction work is a dangerous operation and The HSE has issued many new regulations over the years to help prevent and reduce the number of injuries and deaths. The new CDM Regulations is now tackling the smaller contractor who carries out domestic building works in a sector which still has a higher proportion of accidents. What should OTs do? Firstly don’t panic. Competent Contractors can offer a dual role of Principle Designer and Principle Contractor. However they must be involved at the design stage and have staff who are trained and competent to carry out the Principle Designer role. Alternatively ensure a competent designer is part of the team when a project is conceived who similarly is competent to carry out this duty along with specialist consultants who will undertake the process on behalf of Clients. The consequences of not complying with the new regulations are serious. Should a reportable accident or incident occur on a project the HSE must be informed. They may investigate and if the regulations have not been followed may issue criminal proceedings under the Health and Safety at Work Act.
