Nextgen Energy Week WELCOME...

Nextgen Expo 2013

It is vital for renewables to have a unified voice. I recently sent an open letter to REA members, saying that it never helos to stand by (or worse still pitch in), if there is criticism that can’t be levelled at their own project or technology. Members should stick together, as there may be trouble ahead..... In the Autumn there will be amendments to the RO, to tighten sustainability criteria. We want the NGOs to be working constructively with us to ensure the fuels our industry uses are sustainable. However, on the evidence of NGO activity earlier this month, there is a grave risk that they will campaign to try to get the bioenergy technologies stopped in their tracks. One campaigner was recently quoted in the Independent saying “Biomass is the last refuge of the scoundrel”.

Where the Renewables sector meets for business, the biggest event for the Bioenergy market in the UK.

The world’s first pilot project to showcase a bioreactive wall on a building has been unveiled. With 200m² of integrated photo-bioreactors, the passive-energy house generates biomass and heat. At the same time, the system integrates additional functionalities such as dynamic shading, thermal insulation and noise abatement.

This will lead to new paths of energy generation and to an aesthetic design of architecture in the urban development sector.” Lukas Verlage, Managing Director of Colt International, said: “A first and important step in the use of renewable raw materials to integrate into buildings. This kind of technological leap is not very different to that which the aerospace industry once took. Without these kinds of steps we would perhaps, for example, still have no calculators.” The pioneering bioenergy system went into operation on April 25.

from a turnover in the year to July 2012 of £36.8m as demand for its services has grown from companies keen to tackle burgeoning utilities costs.

The deal, agreed for an undisclosed sum with Canadian private equity house Calisto Capital, creates a new £55m turnover business with 400 employees and 10 offices nationwide.

The group is now looking to target £100m in annual revenues within the next three years and is considering further acquisitions to achieve this goal.

Under the agreement, Evolve’s three operations - building energy management systems (BEMS) specialist businesses Nobbs & Jones and Ashdown Controls, and energy services firm Evolve Energy – will now trade as separate brands within the ESG group.

The business is also looking to further develop its advisory offering under its ESG brand so that it can provide a full suite of services from board-level energy management strategy, to operationally focused advice and systems implementation.

International private equity group, Bridgepoint Development Capital, created ESG after it backed the management buyout of Building Automation Solutions (BAS) in 2010.

In addition, ESG can now provide a finance package to its customers – known as ‘ecoEnergy Plus’ – which funds their projects using the long-term energy savings achieved.

ESG will now offer additional added-value services, including energy procurement, monitoring and remote management from its Glasgow-based ecoCENTRE which is manned 24-hours by specialist engineers that can quickly identify and pinpoint any faults in customer equipment, often avoiding the cost of an engineer site visit.

Through the acquisition, ESG has also significantly expanded its presence within the food retail sector – a key strategic market - adding Aldi and The Co-operative to a client portfolio which already includes ASDA.

The deal also strengthens the breadth and geographic reach of its BEMS offering currently provided by both BAS and Marsh Systems – a firm it acquired in 2011.

The group is looking to unlock new growth opportunities in universities and the public sector where long-term commitments to energy reduction is driving increased demand for strategic energy management services.

ESG has grown rapidly in the past 12 months

Brin Sheridan, Chief Operating Officer

“Evolve is a truly progressive business offering cutting edge services to a quality client portfolio, underlined by a strong reputation for delivery. “Within the UK energy management industry there are few firms who can provide the full spectrum of services – from hardware installation to long-term strategic advice – that we now can.

AEROCOVER

MARSHALL AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING necessitated through legislative compliance, but increasingly farmers are adopting Aerocover to enhance planning applications or to simply maintain cordial relationships with their neighbours. Whichever the case, this British-born technology ticks a lot of boxes and looks likely to prevent unwanted twitching of even the most sensitive of noses for many years to come!

It’s hard to deny that the whiff from a poorly managed slurry lagoon can take the joy out of a stroll through the countryside! Aerocover is a technologically advanced solution to managing odours and emissions from slurry tanks and lagoons. In independently conducted tests, Aerocover was found to reduce Ammonia and Hydrogen Sulphide emissions by up to 100% and significantly reduce carbon dioxide. Accepted by the Environment Agency and compliant with IPPC regulations, Aerocover Odour reduction measures are often

Marshall Agricultural Engineering have been specialist forestry equipment distributors for over 30 years and offer advanced timber harvesting, handling and processing equipment for estate, farm and domestic customers. KRPan offer a range of winches with pulls from 3-10 tonnes. Options include radio remote control, hydraulic butt plates and snatch blocks. For transporting timber, estates and farms generally use trailers with timber cranes for loading and unloading. On small or sensitive sites, Vahva Jussi trailers can be towed by ATV’s or compact tractors and carry 1.5 tonnes of logs. For more general use with larger tractors, Marshalls offer Binderberger trailers (5-18 tonne capacity) and cranes (4 – 9 m reach) for added versatility interchangeable bodies (tipping chip container, machinery/bale platform) are available for the trailer. A common attachment for the trailers is the Westtech Woodcracker log splitter which is used to break down oversized logs to speed up seasoning and makes further processing easier. Binderberger produce circular saws, log splitters (6-40 tonnes) and professional automatic firewood processors capable of sawing and splitting

Next year, an existing photovoltaic system near Templin in Brandenburg is set to be retrofitted with wind turbines as part of the German government’s “Zwanzig20” research initiative. The data from the pilot plant will be analyzed by Solarpraxis, the Reiner Lemoine Institut and additional project partners

Now in its eighth year and featuring over 200 exhibitors, Nextgen is the biggest event for the bioenergy and renewable energy generation market in the UK, attracting over 3,200 visitors in 2012. Farmers, landowners, consultants, specifiers, local authorities and project managers from the rural community and building sector come to source and procure equipment to build and maintain biomass and AD plants, wind turbine and solar power farms, heat recovery systems along with the equipment that enables energy storage and connection to the grid.

Visitor survey statistics from ebec 2012 • 33% of the visitors are landowners and farmers - they have the budget and the power to purchase and are looking for individual pieces of equipment or companies that supply complete solutions. • 36% of visitors are from the supply chain - consultants, architects, project managers, energy managers and specifiers. They represent multiple clients and, importantly, their budgets. • 21% are exisiting plant owners, operators and developers actively looking to repair or improve equipment.

Church of England launches carbon monitoring App 9 - 1 0 o c t o b e r 2 0 1 3 st on el ei g h p ar k

Essex based design agency Zero Above has been helping forwardthinking institutions to tap into the green revolution – including The Church of England, which recently launched its ‘Shrinking the Footprint’ App. Zero Above initially created the carbon monitoring App as an innovative means of promoting their services and, most importantly, their sustainable ethos.

THE UK’S LARGEST RATED BIOENERGY EVENT

“Our first creation was a free Carbon Monitoring App,” says Zero Above’s Simon Isaac, “it measured everything from paper consumption to energy usage and travel, at home and at work. Our vision was, and still is that businesses, charities and individuals alike could use it to Now in its 7th year, again the and, largest vitally, free to attend saveoncemoney, get ahead of the game ndustry improve their efficiency, conference will run alongside the exhibition addressing key issues as well as economic drivers across the renewables market. when it came to environmental awareness.” ing

“Our work for The Church of England has been really exciting,” said Simon. “Previously, Zero Above has built Apps and websites for organisations like Chelmsford Cathedral, Cancer Research UK, Mind, the Renewal Programme, and Enable East, but this was something different; creating a tool for the Church community and beyond that simplifies the process of carbon monitoring.” The new Church of England App, a specially formulated blend of monitoring for individuals and the buildings they work in, is aimed at helping congregations as well as Clergy and Church staff to monitor and improve their environmental footprint. The free App also includes a unique ‘Thought for the day’ function which delivers Christian messages and prayers to users. This means improved monitoring and reporting, and for Zero Above, it acts as yet another means of spreading their sustainable philosophy. “As a sustainable company, Zero Above, has very strong ethics for both success and performance,” adds Simon. “We measure our achievements not just on profitability, but on people and the planet as well. It’s really important for us to work with organisations like the Church of England to spread this ethos across the country, to help encourage sustainable living and working together to reduce carbon emissions”. The Church of England Carbon Monitoring App is available to download free from the Apple App Store or Android Marketplace, search for ‘Shrinking the Footprint’.

The UK’s largest ‘smart grid’ project has completed the first stage of its research into electricity consumption after establishing a series of ongoing trials with 12,000 customers.

11/02/2013 17:18

The £54m Customer-Led Network Revolution (CLNR) project is testing a number of innovative solutions to ensure Britain’s electricity networks are fit for the future and ready for the mass uptake of low carbon technologies, such as solar PV, heat pumps and electric vehicles. Government targets to cut carbon emissions by 34% by 2020 and 80% by 2050 will help the UK reduce its carbon footprint and establish a low carbon economy, but achieving these targets will largely depend on low carbon technologies being adopted on a nationwide scale. As many of these are electricity-dependent, the additional demand created will mean that electricity networks across the UK need to become “smarter” to accommodate Britain’s changing energy requirements and help accelerate the development of a low carbon energy sector. Dr Liz Sidebotham, Communications Manager for the CLNR project, said: “Through the CLNR project, we are already preparing for the widespread uptake of low carbon technologies by carrying out ground-breaking trials with thousands of

Page 10

customers and testing innovative new technology on the electricity network. “Within the first stage of the project we’ve been actively studying thousands of residential, commercial and industrial electricity customers to better understand how much electricity people use, when they use it and for what purpose, and whether financial or other incentives can encourage them to shift their usage away from periods of peak demand. “Our findings at this stage are preliminary, but we have seen a huge appetite from domestic customers for our Time of Use (TOU) tariffs and this particular programme was actually oversubscribed, showing that customers are willing to take ownership of their electricity consumption in return for lower bills. “Through these trials we’ve seen early signs that customers are happy to change their usual daily routines - putting their dishwasher on overnight instead of during the day for example - to benefit from a cheaper tariff. “This is hugely important because achieving a degree of customer flexibility in significant numbers is a win-win situation; offering customers a way to save money and network operators a means of costeffectively reducing network demand at peak times.”

Led by Northern Powergrid and its partners British Gas, EA Technology and Durham University, the CLNR project will continue to study electricity consumption patterns, customer flexibility and trial pioneering new smart grid technology across electricity networks in the North East and Yorkshire regions throughout 2013. Liz added: “Later this year we will be publishing more results that provide further insight into customer flexibility and the effect of various interventions such as demand side response, where customers are incentivised to reduce their electricity usage or increase their generation in response to a signal from the electricity network operator. “The current debate around the capacity margin needed to meet the UK’s future energy needs has largely overlooked the role of smart grids and demand side measures, but if customers are willing to be flexible with how and when they use electricity, it would offer a cost-effective solution in the drive to create a sustainable, low carbon energy sector.” The findings from all CLNR trials are being shared with other electricity distribution network operators across the UK and on the project’s website to help the energy industry prepare for the low carbon future.
