The importance of sharing It is fantastic that so many people have registered for this important patient safety conference. There is a remarkable line up of speakers over the two days so I hope you will all take something away that will make a difference in your own organisation. That aspect of shared learning and working together is key to the implementation of patient safety improvement. It goes without saying that if we work alone we can achieve a little but by sharing and working together we can make a huge difference on a regional, national or even global scale. You only have to look to the national VTE prevention programme in England to see what is achievable. In just four years since June 2010 we have seen the rate of patients receiving a VTE assessment go from just 45% to over 96% – saving many lives along the way. At NHS England, working alongside NHS Improving Quality and the Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs), we recently launched the Patient Safety Collaborative Programme to establish 15 local collaboratives across England. Each collaborative is led by an AHSN to bring local healthcare leaders, clinicians, patients, academics and industry together to identify local safety priorities, develop solutions, implement them and evaluate success. Local findings will then be shared nationally to ensure successful solutions can be further

developed and embedded across the country. This will be the first national patient safety conference since the launch of the Sign up to Safety campaign and I am extremely pleased to see over 150 organisations already signed up. The campaign closely links to the patient safety collaboratives as signed up organisations are asked to create a safety improvement plan, a key aspect of which should describe how they will contribute to their local collaborative. Sign up to Safety presents us with an important opportunity to work together and make a substantial and lasting difference in the prevention of avoidable harm. The campaign’s target is to reduce avoidable harm by half over the next three years – an ambitious target, but one we can achieve if we commit to working, sharing and learning together. I wish you an informative, enjoyable and productive conference that helps us all in our common ethos of putting patients first and preventing avoidable harm.

By Mike Durkin

Patient Safety Collaboratives “The biggest patient safety initiative in the history of the NHS” Says NHS England Director of Patient Safety Dr Mike Durkin talking about last month’s launch of the 15 Patient Safety Collaboratives – a response to Berwick’s report A Promise to Learn and much soul searching that followed the in-depth inquiries into the poor care and high mortality that made Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust front page news for all the wrong reasons. “Having worked closely with Don Berwick and his advisory group, it is fantastic to see the collaboratives about to begin work,” says Dr Durkin. “They will invigorate Don Berwick’s vision of bringing people together at every level, from the patient to the surgeon and the GP to the chief executive, to rapidly accelerate safety improvements in every healthcare setting on both a local and national level.”

EvENt SUPPORtERS

In a similar way, Patient First is an event for its time. The vision is to provide an inclusive environment for all parts of healthcare – not just the NHS – different professionals and varying seniorities to have the opportunity to access quality content, network and learn from peers and find the best products and services to support them in their quest to delivery safe and quality care.

Mike Durkin Director of Patient Safety NHS England

The show boasts some of the national driving forces behind patient safety among the show speakers, from: Dr Durkin, who will deliver the opening address on Wednesday 26 November; to Suzette Woodward, Campaign Director of Sign up to Safety, which under its Learn, Listen, Act slogan has a three-year objective to reduce avoidable harm by 50% and save 6,000 lives; to Phil Duncan, Patient Safety Collaborative Delivery Lead at NHS Improving Quality, the organisation coordinating the support and delivery of the collaboratives. The five-year Patient Safety Collaboratives programme is crucial. In a recorded video at their launch, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt described as the “elephant in the room” the 12,000 avoidable deaths in the NHS every year. The Department of Health says the cost of preventable adverse events is “likely to be more than £1bn” and could be as high as £2.5bn a year.

Is technology the answer to timely, safe and effective care in the NHS?

Visitor Information

Patients, like you, like us, have very simple expectations of the care they receive - it should be timely, safe and effective, as well as tailored to individual needs by involving them in decisions about their care. When and Where Hall S9 ExCeL London, 1 Western Gateway, Royal Victoria Dock, London E16 1XL Wednesday 26th Nov Thursday 27th Nov

08:30 - 19:00 08:30 - 18:00

Travel Parking The Jubilee Line is recommended as the quickest route towards ExCeL from Central London. Change at Canning Town to the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) bound for Beckton, alighting at Prince Regent. If driving, follow signs for Royal Docks, City Airport and ExCeL. There is easy access from the M25, M11, A406 and A13. For Sat Nav purposes, we recommend using postcode E16 1DR. There is pay-and-display parking available at ExCeL

The recent Frontier Economics’ report, ‘Exploring the costs of unsafe care in the NHS’, which highlighted how errors and adverse events could cost the NHS up to £2.5 billion annually, demonstrates how these expectations are not being met. It also reinforces the need for the right information to be made available to the right individuals, ensuring that the right knowledge is in place to stop failings in care. This is particularly true for commissioners and providers as they make operational, strategic commissioning and investment decisions that directly impact on patients. The increasing demand for healthcare services, from a growing elderly population with multiple chronic diseases and younger people not necessarily living healthier lives, means the level of patient data is becoming increasingly richer and complex,

and will get more so with the growing use of genomics and big data. So if the NHS has a wealth of data, why hasn’t it been successful in translating that into information and knowledge that can drive safe and personalised care? techUK, the leading trade body for the IT industry in the UK, will discuss these challenges in depth on 27 November (1011am). Our panel consists of five eminent health informatics professionals and clinicians who will provide insights into how the NHS and the supplier industry can work together, using technology and analytics to break down information barriers, and enabling patients and health and social care professionals to access the data they need. Join us for a stimulating discussion exploring how technology can be part of the answer to a timely, safe and effective care in the NHS.

The Patient First ‘Open Culture Wall’ is an opportunity to share your thoughts. You can share triumphs and trials that you have perhaps experienced with patient care in your organisation, and hopefully learn from others’ experiences too! Our 4m wall and limitless supply of post-it notes will allow you to contribute (anonymously) to the discussion on patient safety and have a voice amongst our 2,500 delegates.

• Do you have ideas where your organisation could make positive change to improve patient safety? • What frustrates you or limits your ability to carry out your job safely? • If you could change one small thing to improve care, what would it be? We would love to hear any of your thoughts on improving care and preventing harm so we can share best practice with the rest of the patient safety community. Your comments can be posted anonymously – we plan to distribute them post-show so everyone can benefit from the shared-wisdom.

Take part – ‘Open Culture Wall’ will be located on the back wall of the Presentation Theatre, next to stand D20 and D19

Patient Safety Collaboratives cont.

Patient First Conference App

Encouragingly Mr Hunt also told the launch that dialogue with finance directors is imperative to underpin the message that patient safety is needed at all times and not just when the public purse can afford it. He said would “Slay [the] myth with NHS finance directors that safety is something you do only when you have enough money”.

The Surrey-based mobile app solution company, The App Garden, is the proud developers of the Patient First 2014 event app.

Mr Hunt told another meeting last month: “More resources should be invested in improving patient care rather than wasted on picking up the pieces when things go wrong.” The business case for safety has often been a challenge. While there’s acknowledgement that safe care is efficient care, the financial business case often comes in the form of avoided cost, such as reduced length of stay or lower readmission rates. As well as significant funding of £60m for each collaborative over five years, the Department of Health has also encouraged other investment. In technology, the Nursing Technology Fund and the Integrated Digital Care Fund have provided welcome support for the NHS to boost investment in technology that can support improved processes, smoother information flow and freed clinical staff time. A frustration, however, for the NHS and industry, is the lengthy delays in the second phase of the Nursing Technology Fund: £30m of investment in the 2013/14 financial year should have been followed up with another £70m of funding in the current financial year. Instead, just £35m of capital funding was announced earlier this month – and spread out over the next two years. But with the launch of the collaboratives, the future is bright. With a need for everyone working in the NHS to

“More resources should be invested in improving patient care rather than wasted on picking up the pieces when things go wrong.”

The App Garden will also be marking the event by launching their exciting new suite of mobile apps designed to assist patients on their road to recovery: PatientRecovery –The mHealth App Series. These series of apps are being developed for both patients and clinicians, to encourage communication and collaboration between the patient and the clinician. Located on stand D60, The App Garden will be showcasing the first app in the series, the EatDiary app. This is being developed in collaboration with Cotswold House, Oxford NHS Trust, to help suffers of eating disorders manage their recovery. In addition, The App Garden’s MD, Bulent Osman will be delivering a presentation on Thursday 26th 11.20-11.50am at the Technology Hub discussing the different ways in which apps can reduce the cost of healthcare whilst improving patient safety.

believe patient safety is their business, supporting the right leadership behaviour and organisational culture and delivering locally driven action and learning with peers locally and nationally to promote, recognise and share best practice, the collaboratives are the vehicle that will shape the progress of patient safety over the next five years. As Suzette Woodward told the collaboratives launch: “We now have an unprecedented and amazing opportunity to do something about patient safety”. Patient First is delighted to be playing its part in the opportunity, supporting clinicians and managers from across healthcare in identifying and sharing best practice, improving

understanding of the goods and services that can underpin improvement and providing an inclusive environment to maintain the focus on reducing harm and improving care.

The App Garden has also developed the Patient First 2014 event app, enhancing the experience for attendees throughout the event. The app can be downloaded to any apple or android device, enabling attendees to view the full programme and favourite sessions to compile their own event agendas. Profile information on all speakers, sponsors and exhibitors can be easily accessed and attendees can provide feedback on attended sessions. Navigating around the Excel Centre can be quite a challenge, so users can use the integrated floor plan to get around. Also integrated is a local guide for users to find restaurants and other amenities in the local area. The app also allows attendees to keep up to date with the latest announcements, news and happenings during the event by checking the Patient First social media pages and receiving push notifications.

Putting the patient first; adopting a flexible approach to healthcare delivery

SUPPORTING OLDER PEOPLE THROUGH SERVICES SUCH AS HOME FROM HOSPITAL

Improving patient experience is paramount if the NHS wish to preserve high standards of care within an ever changing healthcare landscape. Increasing demand is forcing NHS Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups to re-evaluate current service delivery and adopt a more flexible approach. The document will consider why change is needed in the NHS, what success might look like, and how the NHS might achieve these ambitions. The strategy will include a range of care models that could deliver transformation, identifying the actions required at the local and national level to support delivery.

to coping with capacity issues, The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust engaged with Vanguard Healthcare in order to tackle their growing waiting lists.

Patient care is at the heart of improved service delivery and the driving force in hospital renovation and service re-design. NHS hospitals across the country are striving to overcome the challenge of sustaining quality service provision whilst managing increasing patient demand. In a year that has seen the 18 week RTT waiting lists top 3 million, the major national NHS bodies highlighted the urgent requirement for new care models as part of The NHS Five Year Forward View. In order to meet the needs of an ageing population, a flexible approach to healthcare delivery must be adopted.

Vanguard Healthcare installed a mobile operating theatre and 8 bed ward at the Princess Royal Hospital, to support the trust in treating patients requiring upper limb orthopaedics or dental surgery procedures. Run by the NHS, the temporary mobile units have currently helped the Trust treat an additional 400+ patients.

Whilst operating theatres are running at full capacity, mobile healthcare facilities have become a proven way to seamlessly ensure patients have unbroken access to services in locations under increasing pressure. Vanguard Healthcare help support NHS Trusts across the country with an innovative approach to delivering healthcare solutions. Registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Vanguards fleet of 37 mobile operating theatres enable NHS clinicians to carry on providing services during periods of increased clinical activity on NHS sites. Managed and run by the Trust using hospital surgeons and anaesthetists, the units emulate that of a permanent facility maintaining high standards of patient care.

Case Study As NHS Trusts across the country adopt a more flexible approach

Since the units have been in place the feedback has been wholly positive, with the team leader for anaesthetics highlighting flexible infrastructure of this kind as ‘the future of hospitals’, and a preferred option to ‘building big, expensive theatres’.

Patient First Vanguard Healthcare, is delighted to be working in partnership with Patient First this year where they will be showcasing one of their mobile operating theatre units. The team will be offering guided tours of the facility welcoming professionals from across the healthcare sector.

Royal Voluntary Service is one of the largest volunteer organisations in the country. Our volunteers offer practical support and share time to help older people get the best from life. We want to help create a society where everyone feels valued and involved whatever their age – a place where older people can enjoy the life they want and deserve so they can stay active, independent and continue to contribute to society. Mary Smallbone, Marketing and Operations Director of Vanguard Healthcare, said: “We’re delighted to be working alongside the team at Patient First and showcasing one of our mobile operating theatres at their first annual event. It’s a fantastic opportunity for us and we very much look forward to meeting with our peers to discuss the latest hot topics in healthcare and the service we are providing throughout the UK and Europe.

Going home after a spell in hospital can be worrying… Our volunteers support older people after a stay in hospital, making sure their house is safe and warm, helping with meals, transport to follow up GP appointments and providing a friendly face that they can always call on to raise their spirits. It’s simple, inexpensive and it works.

Our experience across the past decade has provided us with a full appreciation of the challenges that clinical teams face on a daily basis, which is why we work so closely with each hospital to dovetail our service delivery into existing healthcare providers’ situations ensuring the best outcomes for the local patients.”

To find out more about Royal Voluntary Service visit our plenary session in the Integration and Elderly Care theatre and see us at exhibition stand C71.

With more than 12 years experience, Vanguard has a proven track record in the design and operation of the world’s largest fleet of mobile healthcare units. From site inspection to clinical integration, Vanguard guides the hospital’s management and clinical teams through the entire planning and deployment process, specifically designed to ensure the patient receives the best possible experience.
