REVALIDATION IS COMING TRANSFORMING MEDICINES Revalidation is a process which will help you to keep your professional skills and knowledge up to date. It will help you to show how you provide the safe and effective care patients and the public expect, as set out in the standards for pharmacy professionals. The trust people have in pharmacy professionals is strong. It is based mostly on the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of individual pharmacists and pharmacy technicians and the relationships they have with the people using their services. Revalidation for pharmacy professionals is the proposal for what a future
framework of assurance should look like. It builds upon our existing framework for continuing professional development (CPD) and adds extra components to assure the public that their trust in pharmacy professionals is well placed. Get the bulk of what you need to revalidate at The Pharmacy Show!

TRANSFORMING MEDICINES AND PHARMACY WITH TECHNOLOGY The team at NHS Digital is delighted to be attending this year’s Pharmacy Show and we are looking forward to meeting you all at the largest integrated pharmacy event in the UK. You’ll find the Digital Medicines team on stand PD16 on both Sunday and Monday where we will be on hand to talk to you and answer your questions about the digital roadmap for medicines and pharmacy. Come and say hello to our Executive Director Ian Lowry, our Programme Director Richard Ashcroft and our Clinical Lead Dr Vishen Ramkisson. Each of our programme heads will also be there; Candice Moore, who heads up our work to digitise community pharmacy, Fintan Grant, who is looking at how we collect and use medicines data, and Libby Pink, who oversees our work to use technology to integrate pharmacy across health and care. We believe that collaboration is key, so we look forward to testing our thinking with you and gathering your feedback. Come and have a chat with our user researcher to share your ideas and find out how you can help shape our work. We’ve sponsored the Technology Theatre again this year and we will be delivering several presentations on both days so please come and join us. NHS Digital is providing technology and digital tools that help ensure patients and the NHS get the best value from medicines and pharmacy by; making prescribing and dispensing safer and more efficient, supporting the integration of pharmacy practice into the wider NHS where it can be most productive, and collecting and using comprehensive medicines data to better inform decisions on spend and use.
communication mechanisms • support the integration of pharmacy practice into the patient journey through new digital solutions • reduce the administrative burden of prescribing, dispensing and providing pharmacy services to allow healthcare professionals more time for patient care
At the moment: • Local pharmacies aren’t sufficiently digitally integrated to other parts of the NHS which means people may not get their medicines as quickly and conveniently as they could.
• collect, analyse and share comprehensive medicines data to support medicines optimisation; improving safety and outcomes for patients and value for the taxpayer. Changes that will take place include:
• Paper prescriptions and forms are still a huge administration burden for local pharmacies, hospitals and GP surgeries. • The NHS doesn’t have enough data about medicines that are prescribed and administered to ensure people get the best health outcomes. To help people get the best results from their medicines and achieve best value for the tax payer, NHS Digital is supporting the Medicines Value Programme by harnessing the power of new technology to: • connect pharmacy services to the wider NHS, with better information sharing and new
health professionals. • Introducing a single, consistent and comprehensive set of medicines data which is used by everyone in the NHS will allow the NHS to prescribe in the most safe, effective and efficient way for patients. Clinicians will be better informed about what does and doesn’t work and which medicines provide value for money. Care will be more personalised because the NHS will know more about what is more effective for a person’s age and condition. • Community pharmacies contributing to patient healthcare records, meaning pharmacists, doctors, nurses and other health professionals will have more information about their patients to better inform consultations, care and treatment.
• Extending the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) to all eligible prescriptions and into other care settings, initially urgent care. This means prescribing and dispensing will be quicker for everyone and there will be fewer errors. The burden and costs of using paper will significantly reduce.
• NHS 111, GPs and hospitals able to refer patients directly to local pharmacies which will relieve the pressures on GPs, speed up hospital discharge, ensure patients have the support they need once they arrive home.
• Integrating community pharmacy into the wider NHS to make better use of their clinical skills by providing NHSmail, Summary Care Record, Skype for Business and the EPS prescription tracker. Local pharmacists and their teams will be able to access relevant clinical information quickly and communicate more easily with patients and other

Managing inflammation & Immunity with Mushrooms More than 90 per cent of the population today suffers from some form of inflammatory condition which, if unattended, can lead to an autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune diseases, caused by an overactive immune system arises from an inappropriate immune response of the body against substances and tissues normally present in the body.
There are more than 80 different autoimmune diseases that exist today. Most of them are longterm illnesses, with the severity of symptoms changing over time. Allergies, psoriasis, asthma, lupus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), diabetes, and multiple sclerosis (MS) are among such chronic and life threatening disease interestingly, affect more women than men. Modulation of T helper cells play an essential role in controlling this condition. In fact, the Th1/Th2 ratio balance is considered to be one of the holy grails in human immunity. Mushrooms contain potent ingredients that offer anti-inflammatory properties, namely beta-glucans and triterpenes compounds. These substances, which belong to the group of water-soluble polysaccharides, help in regulating the immune system and are essential to the normal development of its vital functions. Research has now established that beta glucans can trigger different immune responses and act as efficient and safe immunemodulating agents. Mushrooms as a tool to support the Immune System Five key mushrooms have been identified at Hifas da Terra laboratories to play a role in immune support: Ganoderma lucidum (reishi), Coriolus versicolor (turkey’s tail), Agaricus blazei murril, Cordyceps sinensis and Hericium erinaceus (lion’s mane). Thousands of scientific papers confirm their immuno-modulatory capacity, specifically in regulating the activity of macrophages, T lymphocytes and NK cells, which is beneficial for all types of viral, bacterial or fungal infectious pathologies, as well as their anti-tumoural action. Combinations of these mushroom extracts ad powders have been effective in supporting people with inflammatory conditions. Hifas da Terra with it’s knowledge in mushroom cultivation and research of active compounds offers a unique approach to inflammation through the science of Mycotherapy. What is Mycotherapy? Mycotherapy is a term used to refer to the therapeutic use of mushrooms and their extracts. This term was coined by our scientific team in 2006, and is now used the world over to refer to therapies based on mushrooms. Why our mushrooms? At Hifas da Terra, we are passionate about sharing our extensive scientific research and bringing the incredible properties of mushrooms to the world. Our ranges are organically produced under strict
climatic conditions in our own land in Galicia with the aim to provide the purest and most organic mushrooms. Why Bio-Defense?
the highest standard of purity. 100% certified organic. We avoid all use of all harmful toxins, pesticides and non-GMO. We can guarantee the provenance of our ingredients as well as carry out best manufacturing practises that support people and the planet.

Our team consists of a group of dynamic Biologists, MD’s, Researchers, Health Practitioners and medics including recognised Oncologists.
How does Bio Defense help the immune system?
Committed to the environment. We pursue green business practices. We care for people but we also care for the planet. This is why we create more oxygen than we consume and plant over 80,000 trees a year.
We developed this superior blend of eleven mushrooms (including Ganoderma lucidum, Grifola frondosa, Cordyceps sinensis, Agaricus bisporus, Lentinula edodes, Pleurotus ostreatus, A. blazei Murrill (AbM), Boletus edulis, Cantharellus cibarius, Coprinus comatus y Hericium erinaceus) to provide the body with the optimal immune response necessary to face external threats and allergic reactions supporting the overall well-functioning of a healthy immune system. What makes us different? Our unique products. We at Hifas da Terra are looking to create a revolutionary change in the nutritional supplement industry. Specifically in the effectiveness of our neutraceuticals. We believe that properties unique to fresh organic and unadulterated mushroom extracts and powders hold the key to unlocking the maximum health potential for several existing diseases today. Our ranges are also formulated to

New NPA Chair and Chief Executive talk about their priorities Recent NPA member research confirms that medicines shortages, funding and the heavy burden of red tape are among the matters of current concern for independent pharmacies. They are also very much aware of longer term challenges and opportunities relating to new technologies and evolving consumer expectations. The NPA believes it has a duty to help pharmacies wrestle the challenges and seize the opportunities. NPA Chair, Nitin Sodha, says:
The NPA’s chief executive, Mark Lyonette, continues:
“The NPA is an organisation that is central to the history, and the future, of independent community pharmacy. I believe the NPA’s mission is to support our members at all times and for all time; in other words to equip the sector for the future, as well as the here-and-now. I am conscious that long term trends in society and health, as well as developments in digital technology cannot be overlooked. One of the NPA’s Core Beliefs is that pharmacies must be progressive and modern, while at the same time being true to the historic values of pharmacy as a personal, caring profession.
“Despite being new in the role of NPA chief executive, I can already see a number of exciting opportunities in play. We will be looking to work constructively with government and other stakeholders to help secure a vibrant future for community pharmacy. Most importantly, we must remember that our sole purpose is to serve members – to help support them professionally and to add value to their bottom line. This in turn permits further investment in patient care, leading to greater professional satisfaction and creating loyalty.” At the Pharmacy Show, the NPA will be showcasing the many products and services it provides to members – as well as listening out for concerns and bright ideas. Nitin says, I look forward to meeting many NPA members – and potential new members - at the Pharmacy Show. It’s part of being accountable for what I do as Chair, as well as keeping in touch with everyone’s needs”.

Our sector is full of compassionate and driven individuals, who do amazing work. The slogan for my own group of pharmacies is ‘Community Driven’ – and I believe that this is a reflection not only of my own values but also a characteristic of independent pharmacies across the land. Community pharmacy has unique strengths and delivers immensely valuable benefits to patients, communities and the NHS. The network of local pharmacies is, and must remain, the beating heart of pharmaceutical care in the community. So our job is to help independents to prosper, professionally and commercially, for the ultimate benefit of the patients and communities they serve.

Flu Jab Training at the Pharmacy Show After successfully delivering flu jab training at the Pharmacy Show in 2016 and 2017, Rx Advisor has again teamed up with the Pharmacy Show 2018 to bring to you an updated and more efficient face-to-face flu jab training workshop at the Pharmacy Show! This 1-hour workshop session is combined with comprehensive online learning to ensure that pharmacists that attend are well prepared to deliver the 2018/2019 NHS flu vaccines. Private PGDs are also covered as part of the training and for a small fee pharmacists can purchase a private flu PGD too. The course this year has been updated and includes pre and post workshop online learning, to allow delegates access to all the information they will need to deliver the NHS service and if required a private flu vaccination service also. Places at the workshops are limited, and can be booked online for a reduced fee from only £79 (+vat) by visiting the website: www. PharmacyShow.FluJabTraining.co.uk The workshop sessions will be running throughout the two days of the show - Booking early will ensure a reduced fee and a guaranteed place for you at your choice of workshop session. However, you can still attend the workshop on the day without reserving a place – simply turn up at the training room (Flu Jab Training by Rx Advisor) and ask the organiser if there are any spaces available. It is an NHS PGD requirement that all pharmacists
Now with BioCote Antimicrobial Technology
that provide the flu vaccination service receive faceto-face training at least every two years. For 2018 there are some important changes to the vaccines and to the standards of training too – Our course will cover all important information. Our course includes practical injection technique training, practical training for undertaking basic life support, management of anaphylactic reactions, information about the NHS service specification and Patient Group Direction. Pharmacists will receive information and website links to all of the materials they will need to deliver a robust NHS service.
Feedback from previous delegates on our training has been excellent: “The Flu training was very informative and the practical sessions were the most beneficial. In particular, the trainer was brilliant!” Kassim Kurji (Pharmacist Peterborough) “I found the course material succinct. For most Pharmacists who’ve offered the service for >3 years, this is a perfect refresher. I like the link to the competency Declaration”. Naresh Chauhan (Pharmacist Nottingham)
Booking is available on a first come first served basis. Hurry up! Places are limited. Go to www.thepharmacyshow.co.uk/flu

Why is everyone talking about working in general practice? We don’t need to tell you that the GP practice pharmacist role is likely to be the fastest growing part of the profession over the next few years. We also don’t need to tell you that this phenomenon is already being seen across Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales as well as the massive NHS England investment. Ultimately, this expansion stems from the crisis in general practice and the recognition that pharmacists can apply their clinical skills to displace a great deal of GP workload; providing a challenging and fulfilling career. What is attractive about a career as a GP Practice Pharmacist? Being a valued clinician and an instrumental part of the primary care MDT is core to why this role is so appealing. Typically, responsibilities include: •
Running and managing long-term condition clinics
•
Prescribing and authorising prescriptions
•
Dealing with the medicines queries
•
Managing repeat prescribing systems
can be difficult. You need to demonstrate breadth and depth at an interview and the recruitment process varies considerably across the country. WHAT IS APP? Due to overwhelming demand and requests from pharmacists both from community and hospital backgrounds, who were keen to understand how to break into this profession, Soar Beyond (a trusted provider of practice pharmacist services and part of Wave 1 NHSE pilot) has developed the APP Programme as part of the i2i Network (Insight to implementation Network for training practice pharmacists).
• Case management as part of the multi-disciplinary team
The Aspiring Practice Pharmacist (APP) programme has been designed to address all of the afore-mentioned challenges. This modular, remote training programme has been designed by practice pharmacists bespoke for pharmacists and includes detailed web content, useful downloadable resources and videos including video tutorials on use of the key clinical systems and a model interview.
•
The programme promises to:
• Leading on QOF and local incentive / enhanced schemes • Helping with the discharge process and medicines reconciliation
Polypharmacy clinics
Why is it so hard to break into GP Practice Pharmacy? As much as General Practice pharmacy is a new and exciting opportunity for pharmacists to break in to, the transition is far more difficult than you may think. Some of the key reasons are: 1) The role is still relatively new and many GPs do not totally understand the role of the practice pharmacist, how they are of benefit, or what development and support that they will need to upskill themselves to become an integral and essential member of the practice multi-disciplinary team.
Supporting Aspiring Practice Pharmacists at the Pharmacy Show The i2i Network is partnering with The Pharmacy Show to specifically run ‘Career Clinic’ Sessions for aspiring practice pharmacists in October. All you need to do is complete the FREE online needs assessment and you will receive a dedicated 1:1 slot with an experienced GP Practice Pharmacist to review your learning needs, prioritise your development areas and consider your scope of competence. You will leave with a personal development plan that you can then take forward to help you to secure your position. Bookings will open soon for these slots via (session selector?). But if you can’t wait until October, if you sign up now, you will receive a 15% discount on becoming an APP member by using CODE: PharmShow_18 About

The APP Programme is grouped into 6 domains and are as follows:
2) The transition can be difficult and depending on your background, your needs may vary dramatically. This means it can be hard to know what core skills and knowledge are needed before deciding whether to become a practice pharmacist and what specific development areas you have in order to secure a position and deliver within your role 3) There is uncertainty for pharmacists themselves on what this role will involve in practice-e.g. if you come from community pharmacy, you may understand primary care quite well, but the transition to delivering clinical services and use of the IT clinical system may require more support than you think. Whereas if you come from secondary care, your clinical skills may require less development, but your understanding of primary care, funding flows and QOF may require more attention, alongside the clinical IT systems. 4) Difficulty determining how to stay within your area of competence whilst safely working within your scope and the knock-on effect on your indemnity insurance- this is a complex and fraught area and one that is rather daunting for many pharmacists. Support and expert advice is needed to bridge this carefully and safely. 5) Once you decide on this career path, securing a role

THE ECG WELCOMES YOU BACK! The ECG team are so excited to be coming back to the show to both exhibit and provide vaccination training again this year. Pharmacists attending our training always enjoy the energy and professionalism of our clinical trainers, and leave feeling supported and confident with their skills. With plenty of hands on practise we will cover your IM and SC injection techniques and CPR/Anaphylaxis training for adults and children (over 2years). Following on from your training you’ll be able to purchase PGDs through us, explore other training opportunities such as phlebotomy and access our Monday-Friday clinical support team for any queries relating to your clinical skills. You will also have access to our delegate resources online with refresher videos so you can remind yourself of the skills at any other point. We also have a clinical team available to talk to you throughout the show at our exhibition stand so come and chat about your services you currently offer and how we may be able to support you with additional services such as diagnostics. We are very proud to say we are an RPS accredited training provider and our training and values are very much aligned to theirs. We look forward to seeing you at the show!

Why Social Media MUST be incorporated into the overall Business strategy for your Community Pharmacy
Saam Ali MRPharmS Founder and CEO Pharmacy Mentor
Two years ago, when I began writing these kinds of articles, I would say that the use of Social Media for a Community Pharmacy business was “highly recommended”. Two years on and having set up a digital marketing agency specifically for Independents, I now firmly believe that Social Media marketing should be mandatorily incorporated into their overall business model.
Why? Well, it’s now become so overwhelmingly clear that without it, you’ll be losing business. Furthermore, by not using these freely available channels, you’re missing out on opportunities for growth but also compromising your future. Let me give you a bit of insight. Firstly, the number of Social Media users in the UK is, as you’d expect, at an all time high and has now surpassed 40 million users (as of the beginning of 2017). This is forecast to continue to increase, just like the use of Facebook, which has an estimated 38 million active users. Social Media is also the primary way we now communicate with each other. Cellular data is slowly
but surely becoming colonised by the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook messenger, with 1.5 billion and 1.3 billion monthly active users worldwide. Social Media is part of our everyday existence and will become even more integrated within our lives as time goes on. If your customers and patients are increasingly using Social Media, your business must harness it. Secondly, the competition is increasing all around us, with the likes of online and digital pharmacies, and the government is paying us less for dispensing NHS prescription items. Yes we can focus on getting more and more prescriptions but that’s going to up our workload and we can’t control the prices set by the government. What we can control however, is the prices of the private pharmacy services we can provide, such as our flu jab clinic, travel clinic or any other item you sell privately. Social Media is an excellent tool to help you promote these and the ROI can be excellent (when done correctly).
For more information, cases studies and CPD modules about Digital Marketing for Community Pharmacy, please visit: www.pharmacymentor.com
This brings me to the one Case Study that The Pharmacy Show allows me to present.... For one of my clients down in Birmingham, we created a Facebook Ad to help promote the launch of their Travel Vaccination Clinic at the beginning of July 2018. We spent £10 on boosting a carefully curated post and on the same day, a person walked into the store and spent £400 on the travel vaccinations, malaria tablets and general travel gear. We know that he came in because of seeing the Ad because we simply asked him how he knew of the service. So effectively, this £10 Ad generated a 3900% ROI. That’s how powerful social media (or digital) marketing can be. Getting Social is Getting Real To conclude this short article, if a pharmacy owner wants to grow and sustain their business for the future, then the use of Social Media within the business model is a must. It’s how you’re going to communicate with your customers and patients beyond your 4 walls that will drive your business in the right direction.

The Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies AIM, the Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies, which represents entrepreneurial community pharmacy businesses, will be holding its bi-annual Superintendents’ Forum, supported by Pfizer Limited, at this year’s Pharmacy Show. way we can fulfil our commitment to members and for one of these meetings to coincide with the Pharmacy Show is an added bonus.”
The highly sought after event in the AIM calendar continues to bring together 60 of the UK’s leading Pharmacy Superintendents who will share best practice as well as discuss pertinent topics facing the delivery of services to their customer base and wider community. These meetings are always well received by those that attend, comments Richard Wells, Deputy Chairman of the Aim Superintendent Forum, “As an organisation, AIM is committed to supporting its members and recognises that the role of Superintendent is a key one for all pharmacies. To allow this peer group to meet and discuss key topics twice year a year is one
This particular meeting will be pivotal for our members during a time where pharmacy provision continues to face several challenges, comments CEO Colin Baldwin, “These are particularly demanding times for community pharmacy, both in terms of the commercial pressures on our businesses but also with regard to the potential opportunity for the development of professional practice and closer integration within Primary Care and the NHS. A new dawn for Trade Days On the 7th and 8th of October, the mobility and independent living sector will once again come together for the biggest gathering of TRADE ONLY professionals at Trade Days, at the NEC in Birmingham. THIIS caught up with Event Manager Carmella CoopRodia to discuss how she’s evolving the UK’s only trade only event to make it even better than 2017 and a must attend for 2018. “2017 was a really, really good show,” Carmela commented, “We really listened to our exhibitors and partners and put together 8 new live event areas that were really well received. You could definitely feel there was a buzz and excitement in the air which is exactly what we wanted and we’re really building on last year’s success to make 2018 one to remember” But the Trade Days team are not stopping there, for 2018 they’ve carried out even more research and reacted accordingly with renewed and new partnerships. Initially launched in 2014, Trade Days remains the industry’s sole exhibition dedicated to the mobility and independent living trade, setting itself apart by offering manufacturers, retailers and distributors a space where
they could talk business and 2018 will see some of the much loved usual features return also with Mark Bates once again providing our esteemedVIP guests a free lunch. Another delighted visitor Simon Paddock, Director from The Helpful Hand says “I go to Trade Days to look at the different products that are available. It’s a good show, it’s great to be able to talk to the people within the companies on a one to one basis. I’ve come before and will come again. I get good results out of the show, I get to see different products all under one roof. I can see the ones that I currently have in stock but also new opportunities Carmela adds “Trade Days is the must-attend show if you operate within the industry and I hope people can see that the show is really heading in an exciting direction.
