The group of MPs concluded that the main cause of shortages was the export of medicines intended for the UK market to other countries in the EU, and called for a “renewed sense of urgency” among those responsible for the medicines supply chain.

JOHN D’ARCY, MANAGING DIRECTOR, NUMARK.

For more information, please turn to page 5

The situation has been exacerbated by the quota system, he says. “These quotas have been imposed by manufacturers without discussion or agreement, and are the greatest cause of frustration and inconvenience to pharmacists attempting to fulfil their supply obligations. Quotas combined with DTP and reduced wholesaling models not only reduces the availability of stock in the market, but also choice and competition.”

The problem isn’t new, says John D’Arcy, Managing Director of Numark. “Since 2007, manufacturers have been controlling supply and protecting their margins via the Reduced Wholesalers or Direct to Pharmacy (DTP) models.”

“This is a great opportunity to engage with a high number of experts in pharmacy and raise the profile of our Consumer Healthcare division, highlighting our commitment to education and training for all pharmacy staff,” says Thompson.

Parallel export is a legal via the Reduced activity under EU trade laws, Wholesalers or Direct and indeed, no one objects to importing medicines to to Pharmacy (DTP) the UK, as D’Arcy point out: models.” “We live in a competitive world and parallel export John D’Arcy is entirely consistent with European free trade law. We’ve always been happy to have other countries’ products in the UK, we’re just not so happy when it comes to exporting goods.”

The company will also be sponsoring the show cafe area as well as one of the sessions in the OTC Academy, which will focus on skincare and eczema in particular.

“This situation has been dragging on for so long now, that people have started to accept it. Our only saving grace is that in most cases the shortage of supply amounts to an inconvenience, rather than “Since 2007, a life of death situation. But manufacturers have this state of affairs is not been controlling good for anyone; not for the industry and certainly not for supply and protecting the patient.”

“Our key aim is to support all of the pharmacy team as each member has a role to play in engaging with patients. We will be at the show to explain how our products work and help pharmacists and counter assistants to select the right product for the right patient by asking the right questions,” says Caroline Thompson, Expert Education and Events Manager at GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare UK. spent assisting patients, he says.

The results of last month’s report by the All Party Pharmacy Group (APPG) Inquiry may have come as a shock to the public, but it only confirmed what the pharmacy industry has known for some time; that patients in England are suffering because of a shortage in some NHS prescription medicines.

The Pharmacy Show will be the first time that many in the trade will have the opportunity to see the complete consumer healthcare offering. To give pharmacists a greater understanding of the full range of products and services on offer, expert field teams from GlaxoSmithKline will be available on the stand to talk about the science behind the products and how they can be used in pharmacies.

The current position on supply shortages is disrupting patient care and must be resolved as a matter of urgency, says John D’Arcy, Managing Director of Numark.

But, the fact remains that patients must be put first. Few would argue with the APPG’s recommendations, and the industry now needs to take time to take stock of these, particularly as pan industry guidance toward a solution does not appear to be working, he says: “Guidance makes clear that there is a shared responsibility on all in the supply chain to bear in mind their obligations in respect of the supply of medicines and to be aware of the consequences of exporting medicines. If things are getting worse, the conclusion one draws is that behaviour has not changed, or if it has, not to the extent that makes any difference.“

is seriously undermining the resilience of the supply chain and leading to disruption of patient care, and therefore must be resolved as a matter of urgency, says D’Arcy. “There’s no magic solution to the problem. Yes, guidance on the supply of products needs to be better understood and enforced generally, but the area that creates the biggest headache for pharmacists is the use of quotas. We need to understand the rationale behind them and the system itself needs to more transparent so the supply chain as a whole can see and understand the basis of it.” “Pharmacists are increasingly being required by government to optimise patient use of medicines whether through medicine use reviews and the New Medicine Service in England, the Chronic Medicine Service in Scotland or the Discharge Medicine Service in Wales. This is never going to happen where the little time pharmacists have to spare in delivering these services is taken up in trying to get hold of those medicines.”

Q&A WITH MATTHEW BUTLER SHOW DIRECTOR, THE PHARMACY SHOW What’s new for 2012? We’re very excited about the range of new features planned for this year’s Pharmacy Show. Following the successful launch of the Clinical Conference last year, we’ve merged the Clinical Conference and the Patient Services Forum to create the Clinical & Services Forum. Experts in the field will deliver a range of practical ‘How To’ sessions to provide community pharmacists with all the knowledge they need to introduce services such as smoking cessation, weight management and alcohol consumption into their pharmacies. The forum also covers key therapeutic areas including anti-coagulation, cardiology, respiratory disease, diabetes and mental health.

What can we expect from the show this year? We’ve done lots of research in preparation for this year’s show. We went to the market and asked delegates what they wanted so that the show really is steered by the industry. As a result, we’ve made a few changes and created a bigger and better event. Following feedback from delegates, there will be four education programmes in total to give pharmacists access to the best possible educational content, but also allow them to spend quality time with the huge range of exhibitors.

With a focus on delivering best practice, other new sessions for this year include the Healthy Living Pharmacies project, where delegates will learn how this successful model works to help patients improve their health. Another session will focus on a respiratory programme in the Isle of Wight that has reduced hospital admissions. The Association of Pharmacy Technicians is hosting its conference at the Pharmacy Show for the very first time, and we are also inviting OTC staff to attend a dedicated forum to earn free CPD points, learn about products in the market and how to become more effective in pharmacy.

From community to hospital pharmacists, the Pharmacy Show truly has something for everyone. Some 6,088 delegates attended the event last year and we’re expecting even more this year. As well as earning critical CPD, visitors will be able to learn from leading industry professionals about all of the major issues in pharmacy including medicine shortages, the New Medicine Service and the Medicines User Reviews. We also have more exhibitors than ever – more than 350 to help pharmacists run better, more profitable businesses. And on top of all that, the show provides invaluable networking opportunities, which include a free drinks reception for all visitors and exhibitors at the end of the show on Sunday. Where else can you do your shopping for the year, gain free CPD points and network with industry peers, all in one place?

We are also running four keynote sessions this year; two on each day of the show. There will be no other sessions running alongside the keynote presentations to allow everyone to benefit from the industry superstars that we’ve got lined up to address delegates. These include Kirit Patel, chairman and founder of Day Lewis, and one of the pharmacy industry’s most celebrated entrepreneurs. Back by popular demand, Patel will share his experience and advice on how pharmacists can become more entrepreneurial. Nightline A4 Pharma:Layout 1

STEPHEN TAYLOR CONSULTANCY

DISPENSARY DESIGN IDEAS. HAVE YOU GO IT RIGHT? designer and also a practicing pharmacist. Having designed more than 350 pharmacies and being the author of a unique dispensary model, ensuring dispensaries are designed with the right amount of storage and workspace is vitally important. The way work flows around the dispensary must be carefully considered, even down to where the telephone and fax is located.

STEPHEN TAYLOR BSc MRPharmS

Designing pharmacies is not as straight forward as people may think. You have to consider the impact of every design feature on the working of a dispensary, even down to what occupies the units under a work bench. It is a very specialised area, where experience of working in a community pharmacy is, in my opinion, essential in providing excellent designs. And yet the vast majority of pharmacies are designed by people who have never worked in a dispensary, with little or no regard given to workflow or the allocation of the correct amount of storage space and workspace for the volume of prescriptions dispensed. I am in a unique position, being a pharmacy & dispensary

Providing excellent workflow patterns is equally important in maximising dispensary safety, efficiency and capacity. Pharmacy is constantly changing and the pressure on pharmacist’s time seems to rise every year. Getting your dispensary working for you goes a long way to relieving some of this pressure.

For more information on pharmacy & dispensary design, you can see Stephen speaking at The Pharmacy Show 2012 which takes place on September 30th and October 1st. Stephen Taylor BSc MRPharmS, Managing Director, Stephen Taylor Consultancy Web: www.stephentaylorconsultancy.co.uk Email: STPharmacyConsultancy@Hotmail.co.uk THE SPECIALISTS IN PHARMACY & DISPENSARY DESIGN AND MANPOWER MODELLING

Yet time and again I see newly fitted dispensaries with perimeter workbench and shelving, stock crammed underneath workbenches and on worktops, staff trying to work in badly thought through workflows and MDS trays piled high in a corner because there is no space to store them. The right design, in the right place, by a designer who knows first-hand how a dispensary works.

TRACKING PROGRAMME Consolidation, growing participation by supermarkets, and regulatory changes mean established players, newer entrants and suppliers need to be aware of changing opportunities to fully exploit the potential of this substantial market. With an ageing population profile this is an attractive market for retailers, but there are challenges that retailers must overcome to maximise potential.

him!’s programme establishes how well customers’ needs are being met and what more can be done to improve satisfaction and loyalty. The Pharmacy Tracking Programme allows retailers and suppliers to better understand some of the ‘who’, ‘what’ and most importantly ‘whys’ behind customers’ buying behaviour and motivations within the pharmacy channel.

Also, pharmacy is as much about snacking and food-on-the-go to some consumers as it is about health & beauty and medicines. Pharmacy is increasingly convenience shopping too.

Face-to-face interviews have been conducted with c.2,400 pharmacy customers across Alphega, Numark, Lloyds and independent pharmacy outlets. As with all him! programmes, benchmarking is included at no extra cost. We have also spoken to c.300 pharmacists to understand the level of support required by pharmacists, their training and development needs, as well as EPOS and administration opportunities.

To help focus on the needs of customers, him! launched the Pharmacy Tracking Programme for both pharmacists and pharmacy suppliers to gain first-hand, robust and independent feedback from customers.

This invaluable insight will help shape your commercial decisions and future strategies and, because this is a syndicated study, insight is available at a fraction of the price compared to funding your own research.

Pharmacy Customer Key Facts Did you know? 45% of customers choose a pharmacy based on friendly/ helpful staff

Customers spend on average 7.5 minutes waiting for their prescription. What do they do in this time? 50% wait in the pharmacy!

Only 2-in-5 pharmacy customers who bought an over-the-counter item, were asked if they were currently taking any other medication

43% of pharmacy shoppers who bought over-the-counter medicine received a specific recommendation from staff - 99% of them then went on to buy that product.

Of those pharmacy customers who bought an item on impulse, 1/3 bought personal care products

Pharmacist Key Facts Did you know? Only 1/3 of pharmacists follow planograms ALL of the time.

38% of pharmacists think their sales will increase if they follow planograms, highlighting a great opportunity for pharmacy groups and suppliers to work closer with them to advise on key sellers and impactful merchandising.

15% of pharmacists think they haven’t had enough training to do their job well.

What do pharmacists want most from their pharmacy groups?

Advanced Monitoring for Critical Environments

Global Factories develops, manufactures, and sells innovative products for pouch packing pharmacies. As pioneers in the development of medicine pouch verification techniques, we were the first to develop a reliable, accurate machine for this problem, the Medicine Detection Machine (MDM). The MDM, with its patented technology, makes it possible to check all produced pouches on content, shape, colour and number. It is implemented in several large pouch packing centres and is now checking millions of pouches a day, worldwide. Along with the MDM, we have a variety of other products to improve the packing process, comprising the MDM-System. We use our technical skills and market knowledge to develop new products for pharmacist to improve the quality, efficiency, and accuracy of the production process. If you currently struggle with checking or want to improve the efficiency and accuracy of your process, we have the best solution for you!
