PREPARE FOR TRANSFORMATION The question of what role community pharmacies can play in a transformed NHS and what training they will need, will set the tone for conversation and debate at this year’s Pharmacy Show, taking place at the NEC in Birmingham on October 5-6, 2014. pharmacists who will provide support with medicines adherence to help prevent avoidable hospital admissions, that result from inappropriate use of medicines. The vision also documents NHS England’s Call to Action for Community Pharmacy which has highlighted how pharmacists can play new roles in areas such as: managing repeat medicines through repeat dispensing; freeing GP practice time; supporting GPs with medicines optimisation; helping older people take their medicines as intended; and providing first response for minor ailments, lifestyle advice and support for self-management. There are also references to the GP Call to Action, which calls for care that is more proactive, coordinated, holistic and person-centred and which is fast, responsive and consistently high quality. In its response to the GP Call to Action, NHS England states that in the future general practice will need to operate at greater scale and in greater collaboration with other providers and professionals and with patients, carers and local communities. The commissioner of NHS GP services also says there is scope to achieve better outcomes, through the pooling of clinical expertise, and by offering a greater range of generalist and more specialist services delivered by a larger multidisciplinary team.

The must-attend event in the pharmacy calendar will provide a timely forum for pharmacy’s stakeholders to share their thoughts on the Department of Health’s vision for primary care, which will start to become reality in October when NHS England publishes its strategic framework for commissioning primary care, setting out national commissioning guidance. Together with the Calls to Action conducted recently for GPs and pharmacists, this guidance will inform the development of new national contracts and contractual frameworks for pharmacy and other contractors by December 2014, as well as a ‘suite of national enablers’ - descriptions of potential new service models, investment and incentives for primary care, and workforce development - by March 2015. The Department of Health’s vision for primary care is set out in a policy document ‘Transforming Primary Care’ (available online at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ plans-to-improve-primary-care) published just before the Parliamentary Easter recess. This sets out plans for more proactive, personalised and joined up primary care and it explains how professionals across the healthcare system, including community pharmacists, can deliver proactive and tailored to patients’ individual need. In the vision, GPs and their practice team will be expected to work in multi-disciplinary teams including community

In its vision for primary care, the Department of Health says that community pharmacy teams will have a vital role to play in supporting the 1.25 million people who visit them every day to manage their own health, or the health of their family or friends. It said: “Where traditionally a particular issue might have involved a visit to a GP or specialist doctors, needs are now being addressed by other community staff in more convenient ways for patients. We need to break away from outdated assumptions of who can do what.”
