The Pharmacy Show Network
Post-show newspaper - December 2017
THE FUTURE’S BRIGHTER THAN EVER FOR COMMUNITY PHARMACY The Pharmacy Show 2017 was the most successful event to date, most notable for its feeling of overwhelming positivity and optimisation for the future of the profession despite the challenges that lay ahead. An unprecedented number of over 8,900 pharmacy professionals visited with more exhibitors than ever and eight work streams with over 100 hours of CPD were there to create this buzz of excitement at the NEC Birmingham on the 8th and 9th October. One presenter described the environment as ‘the best of times and the worst of times’, a very Dickens approach to the challenges that community pharmacy faces, but the opportunity to develop and progress. Panel discussions in the keynote theatre considered the community pharmacy future and how to change the narrative and several panel members were very upbeat about the future. Rob Darracott said “from discussions with regular exhibitors, I got a sense that the mood is turning towards services and local development of patient facing activity, including private services”. This sentiment was shared by many of the visitors and exhibitors alike. Ash Soni, president of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society said that pharmacists must tailor private services to local population needs. Commenting on the role of pharmacists, the Pfizer Healthy Partnerships Team explained: “Pfizer Healthy Partnerships was proud to be lead sponsor again and to demonstrate
our commitment to strengthening and growing the role of pharmacists in the local health economy. In addition to our on-going support for community pharmacists, via www.AccessPfizer.co.uk, the show gives a fantastic forum for debate. Our team met around 250 pharmacy professionals over the two days, allowing us to share ideas and explore ways to work more closely together.” With more visitors than ever, the varied educational streams were well attended. Important topics included improving relationships between community pharmacy and general practice (business theatre); opioid dependency (clinical theatre); encouraging young people to think pharmacy (public health and wellbeing theatre); sore throat test and treat (Pharmacy services innovation theatre) and general practice pharmacy (Primary care pharmacy theatre). The technology theatre was also well

Revalidation to reduce CPD burden The pharmacy regulator is to introduce a “little and often” approach to CPD alongside an improved technology platform that will make it easier to submit records for review, Duncan Rudkin stated at this year’s Pharmacy Show. The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) chief executive said: “The public’s confidence in the profession is dictated by what pharmacists and pharmacy technicians do, not by what the regulator
does.” This had driven the organisation to move away from the five year review cycle, in order to reduce the administrative burden for members, and to include activities that added to pharmacy practice, he said,
adding: “We need to communicate and clarify that the GPhC wants pharmacy professionals to spend their time with patients and not meeting GPhC requirements.”

Pharmacy Show 2017 foreword Professor Ash Soni OBE, President, Royal Pharmaceutical Society It has been a difficult year for pharmacy and I hope next year proves better. Pharmacists and their teams are working hard to manage an ever-increasing demand. The challenges are there despite the fact that the National Audit Office in 2010 stated that the community pharmacy contractual framework had saved the NHS £1.8 billion between 2005/6 and 2008/9 while at the same time increasing productivity by 8%. This trend has continued since then but none of this efficiency has been re-invested
in community pharmacy. The NHS must utilise the incredible clinical potential of community pharmacy and its unrivalled access as the first port of call for the public. Reducing demand in emergency care and managing some long term condition care can create the resilience and financial gain the NHS craves. 2018 – the year of the pharmacist and pharmacy? Let’s hope so. Best wishes for the festive season

attended, discussing various apps, the use of social media and how to keep your data safe and supported by NHS Digital. This year there were several presentations from community pharmacists that were walking the walk. It is so important to give the stage to pharmacists who are delivering new and advanced services. Showcasing leading examples of practice provides an opportunity for other pharmacists to understand and lean from others. The Pharmacy Show remains an important event to showcase talent and encourage the whole profession to progress. This year we saw more technicians visit the show demonstrating that the future lies in teamwork. We are particularly happy to see the Royal Pharmaceutical Society joining with the Association of Pharmacy Technicians to launch a ‘statement of intent’ to work together more closely.
bigger space. We brought in a whole team and delivered training to over 250 delegates. It was a great success’. We are already planning for next year. The Pharmacy Show will continue to represent thought leaders in the profession and wider NHS. We will showcase new talent and demonstrate ways in which community pharmacy can tackle the challenges and move forward. “With planning already underway for next year’s Pharmacy Show which runs again at the NEC on the 7th and 8th October 2018 and are determined to make the event even better. We are the national event for the industry and profession – our aim is simple; to give community pharmacy and their teams a platform to receive the advice, tools, training and guidance on how to survive in the immediate future – and also create an environment in which they can feel inspired.” concluded Garry Tyson, Event Director, The Pharmacy Show.
The next edition of The Pharmacy Show will take place on
7th and 8th October 2018 at the NEC Birmingham. The Pharmacy Show Team is looking forward to welcoming you, For more information or to register your interest, please visit www.thepharmacyshow.co.uk

Another major highlight this year was the launch of a brand new Primary Care Pharmacy Theatre in partnership with the PDA, PCPA and the NAPC. This provided a common place for GP practice based pharmacists and independent pharmacists to network and get all the information they need to move forward with the exciting new opportunity represented by GP practice based pharmacists: bridging the gap between secondary care, primary care and community pharmacy. The biggest ever exhibition created a varied opportunity for the visitors to interact with a wide variety of companies and organisations. Many companies were there for the first time, but for connect2pharma this was their second time. Mark Robinson, a director of the company said ‘last year we had a small stand, but this time we came back with a much

Jonny Wilkinson delivered motivational seminar at the pharmacy show Renowned international rugby legend, Jonny Wilkinson, CBE and brand ambassador for Puressentiel, the European leader of natural healthcare products sold in pharmacies, took centre stage at The Pharmacy Show 2017 to deliver a motivational seminar to pharmacists.
On Sunday 8th October, Jonny took the stage at the Local Pharmacy Innovation Theatre to talk about how he has tackled the ups and downs in his career and discussed his natural approach to health and wellness. His talk was followed by a Q&A section, giving attendees the opportunity to ask the rugby star burning questions. Visitors to the show could also pop by the Puressentiel stand to meet Jonny, have a photo taken and find more about Puressentiel’s ethos and products. Jonny Wilkinson is the brand ambassador for the Puressentiel Muscles & Joints range, along with basketball player and NBA Champion Tony Parker. Puressentiel has a long-standing tradition of bringing together athletes and high-level performers
from across the globe and various sports including basketball, surfing and rugby. Puressentiel is also an official partner of World Rugby until 2019. Jonny said: “When I was younger, we were very limited by what was available to deal with injuries. There were anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) and pharmaceutical medicines together with physio etc. While great at the time I wish I had also had the opportunity to use more natural therapies such as essential oils as well. I really believe in natural remedies and think nature provides an effective solution for most things.”
“I wish a range like Puressentiel had been around when I was starting out, but at least everyone has that choice now. It gives pharmacies a great opportunity to provide new alternatives for those customers who prefer
natural remedies or don't like pill-popping for common health woes like minor muscle and joint injuries.” The Puressentiel Muscles and Joints range is 100% pure and natural and provides a proven effective way to manage and treat aches and pains. It uses essential oils from across the globe, such as Wintergreen, Turpentine and Scots Pine, to help relax muscles and has anti-rheumatic and anti-inflammatory properties to get to the core of pain, combined with an uplifting and exhilarating fragrance. About Puressentiel – the efficacy of nature A family-run business, Puressentiel was created in 2005 by Isabelle and Marco Pacchioni, and is the European leader of natural healthcare products sold in pharmacies. In 12 years, Puressentiel has developed a range of more than 240 pure, natural and effective products that combine essential oils and the purest active ingredients and carried out 266 clinical studies on the efficacy and tolerance of its formulas. It has become the youngest company to enter the Top 20 OTC laboratories in France and is now the fastest growing Pharmacy brand in Europe, present in more than 80 countries. Its UK range includes products for Purifying, Anti-Lice, Respiratory, Rest & Relax, Muscles & Joints, Firming, Anti-Hair Loss and Diffusion.

Message from Community Pharmacy to the Government #PS17talk “My message and plea would be we have a 30 billion pound deficiency that could potentially be busting the NHS by 2021. We need to do things differently and we need to do them fast. My plea is that the national team provides us with a mandate for local chief officers so we have a seat at the table to engage with STPs, to engage with our commissioners. At the moment we have the community pharmacy forward view but this has not been quite endorsed yet by the NHS England or commissioners. But if we had that, we could be more powerful in trying to actually integrate community pharmacy into the care part, where we could offer our contribution to medicine optimisation, support for long term conditions, prevention agenda and urgent and emergency care.” Reena Barai
“We are not just glorified shop keepers, we are not just people who bag medication, we are actually clinicians. We are very valuable members of the community. Our message would be to help promote that within the community, to help people realise how important the pharmacists are. The government needs to realise more that by chopping, changing, cutting and budgeting, they are going to compromise on services.” Sarah Khalil
“It is time now for people to have to put aside some of the differences that happened in the past and the history. And say, look, actually, this is about patient care, this is about having the best possible NHS we can. How do we use all the skills, the attributes, the assets that community pharmacy has for the benefit of the NHS?”
“There is a social aspect, where the only contact a lot of the people have is with the pharmacy staff either face to face in the pharmacy or on the few we deliver to. We had a 92 year old saying have you got time to talk to me, you are the first person I have seen in 3 days. We are unique in the sense of the service we provide.”
Deborah Evans
Pakul Patel
“They need to sit us on the table and engage not as an isolation but as a team, right from the beginning so there is no duplication of service. We work in harmony with each other. Create synergies rather than working on your own. Start with the patient in mind.” Raj Radja
“I’d like pharmacy to be a lot more intertwined with the medical profession, with the nursing profession, not only in the community but also in hospitals. Whilst there are a lot of efforts made by a lot of individuals and organisations for these healthcare professionals to work together, I think there is a lot more scope to be done within hospitals for the pharmacists and in the community team for pharmacists to work with GP Practices, for pharmacists to work with the nurses, to improve patient care.” Harvinder Mann

Winter eczema solutions Dr Christine Clark, Independent Pharmacy Consultant People with dry and eczema-prone skin often find they need to use more emollients in the winter months to keep their skin in good condition. Choosing a suitable product that protects and repairs the skin barrier is key to success. Atopic eczema is the result of a ‘gene-environment interaction’ where genetic factors lead to breakdown of the skin barrier and environmental allergens and irritants trigger further damage.1 In the winter months sensitive, eczema-prone skin is easily irritated by the combined effects of cold weather outdoors, hot, dry air indoors and itchy winter clothing. Without effective treatment the skin can quickly develop the characteristic inflamed, red, dry, itchy, sore patches of eczema. Scratching relieves itching temporarily but releases inflammatory mediators that trigger more itching and so the ‘itch-scratch cycle’ is established and skin is further damaged. Many people with eczema are familiar with this pattern and know that they will have to use extra emollients to keep their skin in good condition and avoid further damage – prevention is better than cure. Current guidelines2,3 recommend regular use of emollients on eczema-prone skin, to manage subclinical eczema and prevent flare ups. However, emollients are not all the same and finding the right one for someone can make all the difference. Traditionally, heavy, greasy emollients were recommended to keep eczematous skin well-hydrated but these can be unpleasant and inconvenient to use. Research has shown that ceramides can help to restore skin barrier function. Ceramides are components of natural skin lipids and are reduced in dry skin and eczema.4 The Dermalex eczema range (Dermalex Eczema Treatment, Dermalex Eczema Treatment for Babies and Children, Dermalex Hand Irritation Treatment) contains skin-identical lipids (e.g. ceramides), glycerin (humectant) and MagneoLite™ Complex in a light emollient base. Dermalex Eczema Treatment helps to restore barrier function and hydrates the skin through the combined effects of the ceramides, glycerin and emollient ingredients.5 MagneoLite™ Complex contains magnesium and magnesium salts
have been used for centuries in balneotherapies to treat eczema symptoms.6 In a randomised, controlled trial in patients with mildto-moderate eczema, Dermalex Eczema Treatment was shown to be as effective as a 1% hydrocortisone cream (average symptom improvement over 6 weeks, when compared to a petrolatum- cetomacrogol cream with 1 % hydrocortisone).5 References 1. “It's been really good, very informative. I come because anything that we need to know, or any products or services that we want to provide, we can find out about basically everything here all in one go. This is the only one I go to, and I come every year. I really enjoy it, and I really enjoy both the conference and exhibiting side. We have to do our CPD, and I can come here and gather enough CPD to keep me going for months and months.” Ashley Matthews, Act Services Lead, O'Brien's Pharmacy

“It’s been brilliant, really receptive, a great opportunity for us to meet customers old and new. We see the Pharmacy Show as the one event you really can’t miss. It’s really important to us, the scale of the show pays dividends for us. We’ll absolutely come back next year.”
“It’s my first visit and I’m very impressed, there are so many wonderful innovations to see here – lots of walking required but it’s definitely worth it! Some of this will really benefit my work and it’s always good to properly meet the companies behind the products I work with.”
David Dean, Regional Business Manager, Johnson and Johnson
Peter Hughes, Pharmacist, Pillbox Pharmacy
“I’m enjoying the show, I find it very interesting and totally worth it. It allows me to look at new products. The clinical and business sessions give me really interesting background for my role. It’s good to catch up with people as well.” David Raigosa, Pharmacist Manager, Day Lewis Pharmacy Bournemouth
“Booked our space for next year already! It’s a specific marketplace, we have a specific service, we need to be here – not being here would be the wrong move.” Richard Morgan, Director, Robotik Technology
“The show has been great. We’ve been able to meet a lot of independent pharmacists but also a lot of VIP clients, like wholesalers and distributors – it’s a great one-time opportunity to see them all at the same time.” Rocco Pacchioni, International Marketing Director, Puressentiel

THE PHARMACY SHOW’S PLEDGE TO THE GP PHARMACIST AND INDEPENDENT PRESCRIBER
YOUR inSTORE CHANNEL
In the near future approximately seven million patients will be able to get advice from a clinical pharmacist when they visit their GP, thanks to NHS England’s clinical pharmacists in general practice movement. Many GP practices already employ pharmacists in patient-facing roles, but the aim of the pilot is to populate every region in the UK (an additional 1,500 clinical pharmacists in general practice by 2020/21), to allow GP practice based pharmacists to bridge the gap between secondary care, primary care and community pharmacy. The Pharmacy Show 2017 had a heightened focus on supporting both the GP Pharmacist and Independent Prescriber to help them quickly identify challenges and discover the opportunities. We partnered with the PDA, PCPA and the NAPC to create the brand new Primary Care Pharmacy conference so GP practice based pharmacists have a common place to come together to network and get all the information they need to move forward with this exciting new opportunity. See the story unfold at the Pharmacy Show.
care pressure and it’s incredible to see the power of pharmacy realised. We’ll committed to supporting the profession through this next phase of evolution” Mathew Butler, MD of Healthcare, CloserStill Media With more than 480 people attending the new conference stream and over 300 GP and Independent Prescribers joining the visitor ranks, the event has been hailed as invaluable training pathway for the profession.
“It’s been incredible for me to come here, I’ve sat in sessions that have given me invaluable information that I wouldn’t have found for surfing the web and I’ve met fellow GP Pharmacists and even a few GPs which may result in a future collaboration” GP Prescriber

ECG loved being at The Pharmacy Show for their second year We really enjoy having a stand so we can catch up with all our clients and those Pharmacists looking for more details about training, or even just some clinical ‘chat’ with our clinical team. Also, for the second year we have provided vaccine training at the show. This was really well received again with full sessions across both days. We received some really positive feedback from the training, which included a mix of refreshers and those new to vaccinations, about the standard of the training and the amount of supervised practise they received. This allowed them to leave feeling much more confident and competent with the skills. The heavily practical training enables the Pharmacists to practise their intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques, as well as hands on practise with manikins to refresh on their basic life support skills.
ECG recruit highlyexperienced clinical trainers who have used these practical skills in reality and we find that Pharmacists really enjoy being taught by nurses and paramedics who share these stories and make the training ‘real’.
Our trainers thoroughly go through anaphylaxis and other adverse reactions, enabling our participants to have a go with all auto-injectors as well as drawing up adrenaline from ampoules.
This year we gained our RPS accreditation as a training provider, as well as being able to offer PGDs to our Pharmacists, so all in all we hope that we can continue to improve our services and work closely with the Pharmacy world to provide training needed to enhance their services.
Our participants were thrilled to leave with a password to our delegate resource area on our website which gives them access to additional resources such as ‘refresher videos’ on all the skills taught so they can recap at any stage. They also know that they can access our clinical team MondayFriday 08:30-17:00hrs for advice, which they do use!

GPhC to go public with reports

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has announced plans to publish its inspection reports. The pharmacy regulator’s chief executive Duncan Rudkin said that this move would take place “once the legal change has been switched on”. He went on to explain that in 2016 the law changed to enable the GPhC to publish inspection reports “but this has not yet been fully enacted”. However, Mr Rudkin added that first a consultation would take place as to how the information should best be presented in order that the public understands it.
GPhC is considering stepping away from accreditation of support staff training programmes. “Pharmacy is changing and roles are too,” he stated, highlighting that many pharmacies had diversified beyond the traditional retail, counter or dispensing assistant positions. This was covered in the consultation on guidance to ensure a safe and effective pharmacy team that closed in October, said Mr Rudkin, describing how the next step in the process was for the Council to consider the feedback and then decide how the framework should be amended and a likely timescale for implementation.
Mr Rudkin also announced that the
The opportunity for community pharmacy teams to step in and support people with hypertension is huge, especially as drug adherence is so poor, said Liam Stapleton, pharmacist and managing director of Metaphor Development. Speaking in an educational session supported by Omron, Mr Stapleton told delegates that badly managed blood pressure and a lack of drug adherence – which stands at 50-80 per cent of patients – means that hypertension can have a serious negative impact on people’s quality of life, especially as it is linked to so many serious health conditions such as stroke and heart disease.
9
But something as simple as a series of lifestyle interventions has the potential to reduce the need for medication and get blood pressure under control. This can include exercise, eating a healthy balanced diet, reducing BMI, stopping smoking and drinking less alcohol. Mr Stapleton highlighted the need for pharmacy teams to identify patients who could benefit from implementing these lifestyle changes, as well as checking patients are taking their medicines correctly and teaching people who do home monitoring how to do it properly. “When hypertension is monitored well, it can be managed better,” he said.
Communications International Group (CIG) was delighted to run a competition for this year’s Pharmacy Show delegates to win a Tesla Model S electric supercar by guessing the registration number. Unfortunately this time no one guessed the correct registration of: BD67GJM. Look out for CIG’s competition at next year’s Show for your chance to win another fabulous prize.

Myofunctional Research Company Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) can cause snoring, gasping, cessation of breathing such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and interrupt sleep, which can result in drowsiness during the day. Additionally, other serious health issues such as cardiovasculair problems have now been associated with snoring and sleep disorders. Treatment with oral appliances is now considered the most convenient way to alleviate problems associated with SDB. The myOSA appliances function by posturing the lower jaw forward and opening the bite, which works to open the airway and regulate breathing. This provides the medical and dental professions with an effective means of diagnosing and treating SDB and TMJ Disorder with myofunctional rather than mechanical approach. When in place the myOSA will open the airway and control overbreathing through the mouth. Rather than just focus on alleviating the symptoms of the problem, the appliance range aims to correct the upper airway and neuromuscular dysfunction. www.myosa.com

Pharmacies have a crucial role to play in educating customers about the common cold and tackling antimicrobial resistance, especially when it comes to customers asking for antibiotics, so said Professor Ron Eccles, former director of the Common Cold Centre, in a session on the assisted self-care agenda. “Patients often rush off to the GP for antibiotics at the first sign of a cold because they’re anxious and that anxiety comes from a lack of knowledge,” he said. “A very reasonable estimate is that there are 120 million colds a year in the UK – that’s a lot of business for pharmacy – and [staff] have to be confident in passing on information to customers. That confidence comes from education.”
The fact is, Professor Eccles said, antibiotics are only effective for bacterial infections and colds are viruses so they won’t help to relieve symptoms. “We often refer to colds as germs but actually germs can include viruses, bacteria and funghi so we need to be specific.” Professor Eccles acknowledged that discussions about antimicrobial resistance are by no means new, as studies on the subject were first carried out 80 years ago, but as antimicrobial resistance is becoming a more pressing issue and edging further up the healthcare agenda, now is the time to act.
Did you know that the Pharmacy Show had a sister event in France? In 2015, CloserStill Media, the organiser of the Pharmacy Show, took over PharmagoraPlus, the largest conference and exhibition dedicated to serving the pharmacy market for over 30 years in France. The show brings together all major players under one roof including Ordre National des Pharmaciens, pharmacies' buying groups, unions, pharmacists, media and industry leaders. With 11,591 visitors, 330 exhibitors, 200 speakers, 480 distributors and wholesalers, PharmagoraPlus is the event of reference in the French pharmacy market. In only 3 years, CloserStill Media succeeded in increasing the number of pharmacist owners by 54%. Whatever your stake in the pharmacy sector, PharmagoraPlus will guarantee valuable face to face engagement with the most proactive decision makers the profession has to offer. 53% of our 2017 visitors have an annual turnover in excess of €1.5 million. Every day, more than 4 million French people go to one of the 21,403 pharmacies in France for a medical prescription or some information. A success that forces pharmacists
to constantly adapt to an ever evolving market. Among all the reasons for which pharmacists attend the show, finding new partners and new income streams remain their priority. KEY MARKET STATISTICS • 21,403 pharmacies for 66M+ inhabitants • 74,441 pharmacists (incl. owners, assistants, substitutes) • 55,000+ pharmacy technicians • Average density: 1 pharmacy for 3,018 inhabitants • Average number of pharmacists per pharmacy: 2 • 3 biggest regions: Ile de France, Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur • €1.5 million average revenue per pharmacy
See what our visitors and exhibitors had to say! “An evolving trade show that never disappoints and reflects the state of the profession and where its future is leading.” Nathalie Ramaherison, Pharmacist Owner in Paris (75) “I am very pleased to be at Pharmagora this year. I met suppliers, laboratories and pharmacy groups. It is very interesting to be able to do all that in one day rather than at the pharmacy where it would take much more time.” Alexandre BOUKAIA, Pharmacist Owner in Aubervilliers (93) “Not only did we meet pharmacists but also potential suppliers, international leads as well as distributors. Hapsatou Sy will be back in 2018. We have already booked a bigger stand.” Francis Lelong, Managing Director, HapsatouSy

Record numbers of pharmacists explore the co-located Trade Days event On the 8th and 9th of October, more than 2,407 pharmacists took advantage of meeting with manufacturers, distributors and retailers from the mobility and independent living sector to find potential new products to help boost basket spend and to support the venerable within their community.
Initially launched in 2014, Trade Days remains the industry’s sole exhibition dedicated to the mobility and independent living trade, setting itself apart by offering manufacturers, retailers and distributors a space where they could talk business. Event manager Derek McHale was delighted to see so many pharmacists enjoy the benefit of the co-located event and had this to say: “It was important to us that we held Trade Days alongside The Pharmacy Show to allow you to offer customers access to a broader range of products, where you were looking to stock a selected product range for the first time or expand the existing Pharmacy Show offer” This year’s show saw over 90 suppliers of the latest innovation in mobility and independent living showcase new. “Our exhibitors included, Pride, TGA, Pride, Classic

Canes and Kirton to name a few and they all had a new product, something the market hadn’t seen before on their stand,” said Derek. “I am a big believer in education at events, ensuring industries are sharing and learning new information, knowledge and finding the latest products and services. I would like to say a huge thank you to all The Pharmacy Show exhibitors and attendees who took the time to come across to Trade Days and hope to see even more of you pop through into the show next year.”

Women in pharmacy According to GPhC there are more female registrant into the pharmacy profession than male. However, there are more male in leadership of the profession than female. Women are taking strides in the profession to be the best that they can be leading in various aspect of their career. I believe that more still need to be done to get the female pharmacists on top of their career ladder. Women have to cope with challenges such as maternity leave and taking time off to care for children or loved ones. This may result in career break making them less favourably positioned for promotions. We need more women speakers and advocates in pharmacy and more in the boardrooms. Women need to be proactive and seize opportunities that come their way. We need to accept leadership opportunities that come our way and develop ourselves and other people through coaching and mentoring.

QPS stats demonstrate excellence across sector Author: Training Matters, Source: www.tmmagazine.co.uk/pharmacy-show-2017the-full-report Community pharmacy’s response to the quality payments scheme (QPS) has been excellent, England’s deputy chief pharmacist told the Pharmacy Show. Bruce Warner detailed several highlights from the April 2017 review point data of the QPS, including:
• Over 95 per cent of pharmacies in
• Almost all pharmacies have NHSMail
England have 80 per cent of staff – over 70,000 people – trained as Dementia Friends
• Nearly all pharmacies have updated
Olutayo Arikawe, Superintendent Pharmacist
their NHS Choices profiles meaning patients are better able to check opening hours, and the services and facilities on offer
• Around 12,500 high-risk asthma patients have been identified and referred for review
• Approximately 20,000 pharmacy professions are trained to Level 2 safeguarding
accounts and are enabled to receive and dispense electronic prescriptions
• More than 95 per cent have access
to summary care records with well over 10,000 of the 11,094 pharmacies increasing their use of SCRs to support clinical care.
The next review date is towards the end of this month and will allow the scheme to be evaluated, said Mr Warner.

Revalidation to reduce CPD burden Author: Training Matters Source: www.tmmagazine.co.uk/pharmacy-show-2017-the-full-report The pharmacy regulator is to introduce a “little and often” approach to CPD alongside an improved technology platform that will make it easier to submit records for review, Duncan Rudkin stated at this year’s Pharmacy Show. The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) chief executive said: “The public’s confidence in the profession is dictated by what pharmacists and pharmacy technicians do, not by what the regulator does.” This had driven the organisation to move away from the five year review cycle, in order to reduce the administrative burden for members, and to include activities that added to pharmacy practice, he said, adding: “We need to communicate and clarify that the GPhC wants pharmacy professionals
to spend their time with patients and not meeting GPhC requirements.” Responses to the GPhC’s proposed changes to CPD as it moves towards a revalidation model included a request for more qualitative feedback, explained Mr Rudkin. This meant that records would be looked over by lay reviewers as part of the review process. Although some considered this controversial, Mr Rudkin pointed out: “It is important to remember that pharmacy is for the public.” Revalidation – which will require registrants to include peer reviews and reflective accounts in their submissions – will be introduced in a phased manner over the next two years according to a detailed implementation plan, he continued.
Pharmacy technician debate rumbles on Author: Training Matters Source: www.tmmagazine.co.uk/pharmacy-show-2017-the-full-report There is a place for pharmacy technicians to take on more responsibility in community pharmacy but not at the expense of patient safety or pharmacists’ clinical responsibility, said Sandra Gidley (pictured), chair of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) English pharmacy board, in a conference session looking at the current hot topics in community pharmacy. Referring to the papers leaked from the Rebalancing Board about supervision and the subsequent debate on the subject at the RPS conference, Ms Gidley commented: “Everyone seemed to agree
that it’s entirely suitable for pharmacy technicians to be more involved [in pharmacy] but pharmacists must be there to do the final clinical check.” The RPS position is that “where there’s a medicine there must be a pharmacist” and Ms Gidley added that “having made the case for years that pharmacists are accessible on the high street, we’d be shooting ourselves in the foot if we compromise their position.” Ms Gidley also hinted that the way discussions on supervision were carried out were unhelpful and stressed the importance of transparency. “The president reported back [to the RPS] as much as he could but there is a need for real openness and transparency, not decisions made behind closed doors,” she said.

Supervision changes dependent on decriminalisation of dispensing errors Author: Training Matters, Source: www.tmmagazine.co.uk/pharmacy-show-2017-the-full-report The much-discussed – and sometimes contentious – changes to pharmacy supervision cannot be put into place until dispensing errors are decriminalised, so said Ade Williams, superintendent of Bedminster Pharmacy in Bristol.
Speaking at a session on the work of England’s Rebalancing Programme, which aims to bring pharmacy legislation and regulation into the modern era, Mr Williams (pictured) emphasised how the situation in which inadvertent dispensing errors are viewed as criminal offences was stifling innovation. He said: “At the moment, pharmacy technicians work and excel within the current regulations.” Changing supervision so pharmacy technicians were, for example, able to supervise supply of prescription-only medicines wasn’t a move intended to “usurp pharmacists” or “do things on
the cheap” but instead “about releasing the potential of the team so the patients received the best and highest quality of care”, he told Pharmacy Show delegates. However Mr Williams said that it was vital to make sure that any changes were communicated clearly to the public, especially given that many people had expressed concerns about potential pharmacy closures due to funding cuts. He explained: “We don’t want to lose the goodwill and trust of patients… This is good for the profession, but we need to protect and communicate our integrity to the public.”

Valneva in Partnership Programme. A travel health support programme for pharmacy. A significant proportion of people from the UK currently seek no health advice before travelling abroad due to a lack of awareness of, and access to, comprehensive health support. So, as part of their on-going investment in the UK travel health sector, Valneva UK Limited have launched the VIP (Valneva in Partnership) programme; an all-inclusive programme of tools, assets and resources carefully designed to support pharmacies to offer a comprehensive travel health service. Annually, over 70 million trips abroad are made from the UK but approximately 50% of travellers depart without seeking health advice.1,2 Among those who do seek advice, a proportion commonly leave it too late to consult with a healthcare professional meaning many travellers are poorly protected.2 This may result in as many as 60% of travellers becoming ill as a result of their travels.3 While already a significant issue, in future, this may be further compounded by the potential impact of pharmacy funding cuts announced last year by the Department of Health, with up to 3,000 pharmacies expected to close as a result. “The travel health service landscape in the UK is changing dramatically, and will continue to change over the coming years with providers struggling to meet the needs of their customers while also maintaining a viable business,” stated Graham Thoms, Head of Commercial Operations UK, Ireland & Southern Europe, Valneva UK. “The VIP programme is intended to be a win-win for travellers and pharmacists alike, providing greater access to comprehensive health services that travellers desperately need through
supporting pharmacies in expanding their range of services.” The VIP programme addresses the significant and growing unmet health needs amongst both UK travellers and the pharmacies that deliver their community health services. The programme offers pharmacies access to comprehensive online travel health training and consultation platforms, a referral scheme with clinic finder, nurse mentorship and skills coaching, as well as a range of disease awareness and clinic support materials. The Pharmacy Show and PharmagoraPlus launch a new International Exchange programme in 2018 7-8 October 2018
A selected number of pharmacist owners from the UK will get the chance to travel to France and spend a day with fellow French pharmacist owners in their respective pharmacies. As this is an exchange programme, these French hosts will then come to the UK to spend a day in their British counterparts’ pharmacies. This is a great opportunity to experience how a pharmacy is run across the channel, exchange ideas with peers and find innovative solutions to similar challenges. All pharmacist owners will also be invited to attend The Pharmacy Show as well as PharmagoraPlus, discover what products and services are available in each other’s market and network with fellow pharmacy professionals.
