President’s Message By Anahi Ruiz

Hello Key Clubbers! It is coming down to the last few days of summer as we prepare for another school year full of service. This month we will be experiencing big changes. We will be holding our first meeting of the new school year, and most importantly, recruiting members! Remember that recruiting new members is one of the major keys to any club’s success. We have many new projects to introduce to everyone, including: The Princess Project, Seeds of Learning, and Save the Rain! For Seeds of Learning, we are planning to work together with Interact. This will be a very fun project where both clubs can collaborate and get to know each other. I hope to work with, and see all of you soon. Enjoy the beginning of the school year and join us for our first meeting on August 22nd in Room 21!

President’s Goals for the Year

Are these goals attainable? The club Board seems to think so, because they endorsed them at their July meeting. Here is a message from your Board:

We are very excited for the start of this school year! With a dedicated group of members, these goals are definitely possible!!!

P Paper Airplane PTP Fundraising R E S I D E N T S

By Sebastian Ley For the past couple of weeks, we’ve been outside Ray’s Food Place, selling spots on a grid. We’ve managed to sell most of the squares, and there are 100 of them! Once we sell all of them, we are going to throw a paper airplane over a giant grid that we create. It will be made from pieces of 8 ½ by 11-inch paper, each piece labeled with a number from 1 to 100. Whatever number the airplane lands on, the person who bought that square will win $100! Meanwhile, we’ll make $400 for our PTP cause!

Board-2-Board Dinner By Gabriela Gaona Our members had a really nice time with our Kiwanis. The dinner was at Papa’s Pizza Café where we each shared something people didn’t know about us, along with some shared laughs. Anahi and Gaby gave their presentation on Save the Rain and our Kiwanis members seemed very pleased and excited to support us with this cause. Both clubs had a great time and it was an enjoyable bonding experience.

On an early Saturday morning in July, our members met up at Cloverdale High School where we began setting up for a car wash. This car wash was one of our fundraisers for Key Club Bucks, and at the end of the day we brought in $346!! Our members had a great time and many people were thankful for their spotlessly clean cars.

By Miguel Gonzalez On July 21st, Key Club held its final summer meeting. We discussed several topics, such as the Save the Rain project, and the Pediatric Trauma Program, as well as talked about other events. Save the Rain is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to bringing clean, drinkable water to poverty stricken villages in Africa, where women, and children as young as 5 years old walk miles every day carrying gallons of water, often infested with deadly diseases such as Typhus, Typhoid, and Cholera. The Pediatric Trauma Program, or PTP, is a program which hopes to reduce the number of children killed or injured by pediatric trauma, (accidents), which is the leading cause of death and injury of children under the age of 14. The PTP program provides community outreach, education, materials to children and families, and provides grants to partner hospitals, which enables them to do more! Some of the events we discussed at the July club meeting included helping at the Food Pantry, attending the Kiwanis meeting to hear the Seeds of Learning speaker, setting up the “Bake and Guzzle” event on August 8th, and going to the Division Council Meeting on August 12th. As you can see, it was a busy agenda. Of course, one of the best things about the meeting was that we held it a Papa’s Pizza! The pizza was great! Wish we could hold our school meetings there, too!

July Board Meeting At our July Board meeting, we discussed the Save the Rain campaign and ways to fundraise for it. We approved the President’s Goals, and the service calendar presented by the Vice Presidents. Along with that we discussed this upcoming school year and how to get more club members involved. That meeting was a very productive meeting. Our members also had a great time swimming and bonding with one another in the hot tub, once the meeting was finished!

Scrapbook Creating A Club Scrapbook By Yatziri Ruiz The club scrapbook is an amazing opportunity to express your creativity. Of course, putting together the scrapbook is a tremendous responsibility, but it's also like a gift. It takes time to create something wonderful; you can’t decide to do it last minute because that becomes a real hassle. Making the scrapbook is a wonderful opportunity because you must stick to a theme you have chosen. Furthermore, the scrapbook doesn't have to be a “traditional” book. You can get creative and explore new ways to showcase your club; think outside the box. Key Club allows you to make a digital scrapbook or a nontraditional scrapbook; or you can do a traditional scrapbook like we’ve done for several years. Regardless of which way we choose to show off our club, putting it together is a lot of fun, and a lot of work. You will be able to see how many activities our club participated in, and you see how many members were active. Working alone on the scrapbook can be a challenge, but we think that you can organize sessions to have groups work on the scrapbook at specific times. Not only is that efficient, but it’s fun to have several members all working together. It can also cause our scrapbook to be “unique”, because we’ll have many different ideas and perspectives on how it should look and how it will turn out to be. Now is the time to start planning what we want to do for this year. We’ll want to take our book to next year’s District Convention, on April 13th. Our records for this year started on April 8th, so we don’t want to wait much longer to begin! We’ll be starting group scrapbooking sessions in early September! Look for announcements at our club meetings; and sign up for work sessions on our club website!

We’ve got a scrapbooking session planned for Saturday, September 2nd from 9 a.m.to 1 p.m.

Put it on your calendar!

ICON Presentation to Kiwanis Club The three members who attended International Convention, (which were Anahi Ruiz, Lillian Bearden, and Jessica Aguirre), also attended a Kiwanis meeting after they got back. At this meeting, they gave a presentation on what they had learned and shared their overall experiences and feelings about the event. The Kiwanis members were delighted to hear about their trip and the three Key Club members were thankful for the Kiwanis time and help when fundraising for ICON. The Kiwanis members were also each thrilled to receive a Texas tattoo!

Club Website

There are sub-categories under About Us, Activities and Newsletters. By Rowan Addison Cloverdale Key Club now has a great website full of information! You can find many things on the website, including information about our Key Club, the location of our club, and details about upcoming events and activities. Members can see what activities are coming up and RSVP for events. You will also soon be able to access the “Members Only” section. You must ask for permission to be allowed into the “Members Only” area which includes contact information for all our members, your Key Club Bucks and Service Records, and some fun, “bad” photos! A printable form for new members is available under the “Contact Us/Join Now” tab on the site; and you can look at pictures of all our activities, with brief descriptions of our recent events. Also, you can access current and past club newsletters, and find information on our Single Service Project, which is the term used by Key Club International to identify a club’s single, most important project of the year. This year, for us, it’s going to be Save the Rain. Overall, the website is a great way to find information about the Cloverdale Key Club for both members and others!

Club Website…More If you want to access the Members Only page, you need to go to the “Contact Us/Join Now” button and click on it. Then complete the message send box. Rory Kluesener, our Webmaster, will verify that you have paid your dues and give you access to the section.

Friday Night Live Table

By Andreina Inda At the most recent Friday Night Live events, Key Club decided to have a table dedicated to talking about Save the Rain. Save the Rain is an organization that helps gather clean water for communities that don’t have any. Rain catchment systems are built in the communities which helps the towns have clean water for the rest of the lives of those living there. We built an exhibit for our table to provide information for those who are attending Friday Night Live. At the table, we are asking for donations to help us raise money to provide rain catchment systems for the communities in Africa. The exhibit explains what exactly Save the Rain is, and how it helps people. Also, there are pictures showing exactly what will be built to help those towns in Africa. There are only a few Friday Night Live events left this year, but if you go to any of them, please be sure to stop by our table and say, “hi” and learn all about this fabulous service project that we’re doing.

Save the Rain – After School Snack Plans

By Gabriela Gaona We’ve set a fundraising goal for this school year of $11,000 for the Save the Rain project. To reach that goal, we have decided to set up a table after school where we’ll sell delicious snacks and treats. Our table will be located in front of the office and we will be there every day after school. We will sell a certain item for a whole week; and then we’ll let the student body pick out the next week’s item from a choice of three possible options. Ballots for choosing will be available every Thursday, at the sale table. We hope to sell items that are trendy at the time because, in order to get a decent profit from this project, we’ll have to interest the student body in what we’re selling. That’s why we’re including our buyers in the decision making. Everything that is fundraised is going towards the Save the Rain organization which helps bring clean drinking water to communities that don’t have access to it. For our first week of school, we’re doing “Corn in a Cup”. A “cup” will cost $4.

July Recognition MEMBER OF THE MONTH For the Member of the Month we have decided to award it to Rowan Addison, because of her dedication and hard work on the July newsletter, as well as for being an outstanding Key Club member. She has joined the Board by becoming an Executive Assistant, and we are pleased that she will be working so closely with our officers.

OFFICER OF THE MONTH This month was a very busy one and Anahi Ruiz managed to make sure the club members were very informed about upcoming events and showed excellent leadership skills, which is why she is Officer of the Month. One of the projects she started was a “Weekly Calendar which will be placed on our website and shared with our members each weekend.

Seeds of Learning

By Anahi Ruiz What is Seeds of Learning? Seeds of Learning is a project that helps build schools in rural areas of Nicaragua. They have built 216 schools since it was founded in 1995. SOL is so much more than this, though. They provide scholarships for children to further their education; and they build libraries, education centers, classroom furniture; and the list goes on! We have the amazing opportunity to help them and it is truly a great project. Not only that, but we might be working on this project with Interact! This is a wonderful opportunity to support a cause and could help us to form a stronger bond with Interact. It’s a win-win situation, and I can’t wait to get started. Look for a special, joint meeting with Interact, probably in September. We’ll all get to hear Gail Chadwin, a former Key Clubber, who will share details with us on how we can help children in Nicaragua better their lives.

The September calendar is tentative and there will be some changes! The final calendar will come out around the first of September.

By Neidi Calvillo Our Kiwanis mean a lot to us. They are our family and motivation for service. They are ALWAYS there when we need them, believe it or not! And, they are always motivating us to do more. They provide leadership and support. We really appreciate our Kiwanis for everything they do for us and for everyone they help in both Cloverdale and around the world. Not only do they provide support in helping to pay for us to attend leadership events, but they help with our local projects and activities. For example, when we did our car wash in July, over ½ the people who brought in their cars were Kiwanis members. And, they often paid more than the minimum charge! Our club members who have been around for a while truly think that we have one of the BEST EVER Kiwanis Clubs! We are also truly thankful for their support, strength, leadership and guidance. Our Kiwanis mean so much to us! Thank you, Kiwanis! WE LOVE YOU!

What our Kiwanis Mean to Us‌

Kiwanis Family House Trip This is the Kiwanis Family House in Sacramento. The Kiwanis Family House offers 32 bedrooms, each with a shower and bathroom facilities, four kitchens with dining areas for self-meal preparation, a laundry room, a child’s game room and an outdoor play area. Families have free, long-distance phone and internet access, and free shuttle bus transportation to and from the near-by hospitals, 24-hours-a-day.

By Gabriela Gaona On August 26th, our division will be visiting the Kiwanis Family House. They have been planning this trip for some time now. The Kiwanis Family House is located in Sacramento, and it was built by many Kiwanis volunteers from around that area. It was built in hope of providing a temporary home and support to families whose children are being treated at UC Davis Medical Center or at the Shriners Hospital, both of which are only a block away from the House location. At the Kiwanis Family House, they offer low cost accommodations that are safe, convenient and radiate a sense of community. The mission of the Kiwanis Family House is to help these families find a place to stay for a bit during a time when they are already traumatized by what’s happening in their lives. This is because the Kiwanis service motto is “Serving the Children of the World” and by offering a place like this for families to stay, it helps us do just that. We hope to take two carloads of members to the division work session. We’ll be leaving Cloverdale on that Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. and returning around 4 p.m. Once we arrive at the House, we’ll be doing a service activity, determined by them, and then we’ll take a tour of the facility and hold a barbecue on their patio. While on the patio, our members should “hunt” for bricks that have Cloverdale Key Club or Cloverdale Kiwanis mentioned in their inscriptions. Clubs can donate $100 to the House, and get an inscribed brick! We have several bricks already, from donations we’ve made over the years. We hope to take a $100 donation with us on this trip so we can have ANOTHER BRICK made!

This is one of our bricks on the patio at the Kiwanis Family House!

Being A Diamond Distinguished Club By Sue Cummins/Advisor We have an incredible Key Club here at Cloverdale High School. Not many are aware of just how much our club does, year-after-year. That’s because we don’t really care all that much about receiving recognition for our efforts. Mostly, we care about making a difference in the world, whether it’s on a local level or globally. Our members routinely have a combined service record of 2,500 – 3,000 hours each year! We also routinely fundraise enough money to give away between $7,000 - $10,000 annually. We have members who earn more than 200 service hours a year! We also have members who earn the CHS minimum of 15 service hours. Please remember that we welcome any student, regardless of their inclination to do more, or less, service! However, Key Club International recommends that ALL members have at least 50 service hours per year. And, to understand what it means to be a Diamond Distinguished Club, you need to know that one of the more important criteria for being judged as such, is whether or not your club members average that 50 service hours goal. There are a lot of other criteria to win this award, but club service record is, by far, the most critical! So, figure this out…if you have an average of 30 members, you need a total of 1500 service hours to meet that KCI goal! Let’s say that 10 of your members only do the CHS minimum of 15 hours. Their total would then be 150 hours. Typically, about a 1/3 of our club does the minimum. Then, you may have another 10 members average 30 hours of service, making the total service for 20 of your members be 450 hours. That leaves the last 10 members to volunteer for the last 1,150 hours, making their average to be well over 100 hours, each! When you realize that for 10 years running, our club has won this prestigious recognition, and you back that knowledge up with the fact that only 1% of ALL the Key Clubs in the WORLD earn this award; you begin to understand how phenomenal are our Cloverdale High School Key Clubbers! I JUST WANT TO SAY, “KUDOS TO THE WONDERFUL KEY CLUBBERS THAT WE HAVE AT CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL”.

Shown here is Lillian Bearden, recent CHS Key Club graduate, after having gone on stage at the San Antonio International Convention to receive our club’s Diamond Distinguished plaque for the 2016-17 year. This plaque is now on display in the club’s trophy case, found at the West end of the South Hall.

The Princess Project By Anahi Ruiz

The Princess Project is a wonderful project that gives young women, (whose families don’t have the resources to purchase a new prom dress), the opportunity to go to prom. Prom can be a very important moment in a young woman’s life, and the Princess Project gives financially disadvantaged girls the opportunity to go, by supplying them with dresses, make up, shoes, and overall, anything to make a prom experience a dream come true. Our Key Club was recently contacted by the Princess Project, asking if we could help them, and of course we said, “yes”. Basically, we’ll be doing two things: 1) we’ll fundraise to provide them with money to purchase some things; 2) we’ll do a “prom drive” here in Cloverdale, asking for donations of slightly-used prom dresses, etc. Just think of how good it will feel to help someone in need have a truly special night next spring! This is an amazing project that we hope will help young women throughout Sonoma County have a spectacular prom experience.

JUST FOR FUN! Fun Facts: - The first Key Club was founded in Sacramento, California in 1925. - The first official District Convention was held in Oakland in March 1948. - John Cooper of Oakland Technical High School was the first District Governor of the Cali-Nev-Ha District.

• Did you know? The “Key” in Key Club refers to the fact that the Kiwanis decided to offer Key Club opportunities to the “key” leaders on the Sacramento campus. Key Club was for males ONLY until the Civil Rights Act of 1965 made gender segregation illegal.
