By: Lilly Duran Hello everybody! ‘Tis the Season to be giving! I am glad to say we had a fairly successful past month! We had a very good turnout at the Kiwanis Crab Feed, with 18 members and friends helping to wait on tables! In December, we had a blast caroling, making reindeer ornaments and decorating Nutcracker cookies at the convalescent hospital! And, we can’t forget helping at the Lions Club Toy Run. And then there’s the money we spent to shop for four children in the X-Mas-Make-A-Wish program. You should also know that our gift boxes to troops over-seas got off in time to be received for Christmas. Thank you to all the people who came to our Member Recognition Event for our last meeting of 2019! I hope everybody’s holidays prove happy, and I’ll see you in the next year! When we come back, be ready to jump into action for the Footloose Movie Night, the Knights of Columbus Crab Cioppino Dinner, and more. Thank you for all the service you do!

Member Recognition Event By: Paula Toledo This year, Co-Vice Presidents, Alexis and I, planned and conducted our club’s annual recognition event. This is a time when we welcomed our new members with the Key Club New Member Induction Ceremony. We also gave out certificates and personal awards to our Members and Officers of the Month from the past several months. We recognized all our active officers, and finally, we spent some time honoring the members who’ll receive awards through the CNH District Member Recognition Program. It was especially nice to have Carolyn Talvitie, one of our Kiwanis Co-Presidents, there to honor everyone. It was a wonderful time when we welcomed new family members and thanked everyone for their hard work and participation in the club.

Member of the Month 6

November’s Member of the Month was Grace Gloeckner She helped to serve at the Knights of Columbus Chicken and Polenta Dinner. We could also count on her attendance at club meetings. Grace is an inspiration to us all because she manages to stay involved with Key Club despite a heavy workload that includes a strong year-round commitment to the sports program.

Officer of the Month

Our Officer of the Month for November was Alexis Sanchez who helped with the “Honoring our Kiwanis� project during Key Club Week. She also attended two HUGS days at the convalescent hospital, including going shopping for supplies for one of the projects. She was at both club and Board meetings. Alexis is one of our most dedicated members.

Operation Shoebox By: Alexis Sanchez Sophia and I, along with our advisor, spent a Saturday morning in November traveling to Healdsburg to their Dollar Tree store. It was there that we shopped for our soldiers-over-seas project. We bought them things they had requested. These included: razors, Top Ramen, antiseptic wipes, toothbrushes, puzzles, non-melt candies, etc. We ended up putting about 20 different items in each box. We were worried that we might have gone over-budget, as we had $400 to spend on 25 soldiers. Imagine how much fun we had, spending someone else’s money, (Key Club’s), for such a good thing! We spent about an hour and a half in the store and still had some money left over! Of course, we managed to spend it all by the time we were ready to box everything up! (These pictures are from our “boxing up” day at the convalescent hospital.)

By: Sophia Parker On November 24th, Matthew, Lilly, Kayla, and I went Christmas shopping for the Cloverdale Make-A-Wish Program. We bought gifts like warm clothes, blankets, and toys for children. We had details about the needs of four children.

They were all boys, with two who were around 1-year, and a 5 year-old, and one being 10. The Key Club Board authorized for us to spend up to $300.

Stephen Bearden gave us another $100! So, we were able to spend $100 per child! It was a great experience and I hope the presents we chose make those kids’ holidays a little more magical!

By: Kayla Gallego In December, we went to the convalescent hospital twice in order to do projects with the patients! Our first project was to make reindeer ornaments! The patients were given two ornaments to decorate and when finished, they had the option of putting them on a Christmas tree in the recreation room, or they could take them to their rooms! I absolutely loved doing this activity because it was amazing to see their expressions when they completed their ornaments. I think that this project was very fun to do because it’s a fun way to bond with patients, so I would definitely do this again with them!

For our second activity we threw a cookie decorating party!

By: Paula Toledo This year’s annual Crab Feed was such a success because we had help from our members’ families and friends. We even had a few younger helpers/relatives who were Builders Clubbers! The night ran so smoothly and I’m super glad that we stepped up for the challenge. Our Kiwanis are always helping out with us; and they are always so supportive. It was nice to be able to help them in return. It was so great to be able to form such a bond with them, and what better way to do it than with a huge service project! One other really great result of the evening was that our club made $1680 in tips!

KIWANIS TAKE-OVER MEETING AND BAKE AUCTION By: Paula Toledo In December, our Key Club Board took over a Kiwanis meeting, normally conducted by the Kiwanis Presidents. Lilly did a fine job leading everything, with each Board member having a specific role to perform. Alexis led the song, Rowan gave the inspirational thought, Miguel shared names in the news, Kayla took around the happy/sad bucket, and more! We also held our annual Bake Auction, with Kiwanis Advisor, Stephen, being the auctioneer. Almost all our Board members brought homemade sweets to auction off. Our Kiwanis are always so supportive of us! They ended up spending $455 on the items we sold to them! THANK YOU, KIWANIS!

CAROLING WITH KIWANIS By: Alexis Sanchez We went up to the convalescent hospital to sing to the lovely patients! We sang some of the more fun Christmas carols, such as “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, and more! The patients loved seeing us because we’re one of the few clubs that go up and sing to them. We also got to interact with the patients, because they joined in with us when we were singing. And, because we’ve been going there for our HUGS Project, we also are now known to many of them! Many of the Kiwanis members brought cookies, banana bread, and drinks to share. It was a very heart-warming experience, and I’m glad that I was able to be there. It was especially fun for me because my mom, who is a new Kiwanis member, and my little sister were there too!

By: Rowan Addison In December, some of our Key Club members worked in the Cloverdale Food Pantry, once school was out for the Winter Break. We passed out various items to people in need. Unfortunately, it was a record month for people in need in our community. The Kincade Fire put some people out of work, and made others homeless.

With the rain and cold adding to people’s discomfort, it was nice to know we were helping our Kiwanis with a worthwhile project. On December 20th, we are shown here passing out Christmas hams for the holidays. It was great to help people; and it feels especially good around the holidays.

‌and Petaluma Christmas Cheer Project

By: Kayla Gallego On December 21st, a group of our Key Clubbers went to the DCM in Petaluma. We had a short meeting, mostly sharing news about the upcoming District Convention, while having lunch. Afterwards, we cleaned up and helped with delivering Christmas presents to a portion of the 800 families identified as being in need this year in Petaluma! We paired up into groups of two and got carts of presents that corresponded to a specific family. I really enjoyed helping, because there were many families who were so nice and were happy when receiving the gifts! I would definitely do this again, because it was great seeing the reactions of the children inside their cars when they saw the bags we were loading up!
