Imagine that a child has just been born. The child cries, yet there is a particularly plaintive sound to these cries; in the process of being born, this child has contracted maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT). This type of tetanus causes the infected individual to be sensitive to light, touch and sound. Which means, this baby will never know a mother’s touch, this baby will never see the light of day, this baby will never experience the joys of music; this baby will die. MNT is a particularly awful disease that steals the lives of 60,000 infants per year.

The Eliminate Project

Need

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award

Kiwanis International and UNICEF have teamed up to eliminate MNT from the entire world. The most incredible thing about this disease though, is that the solution is quite simple. MNT is 100% preventable! All it takes is a series of 3 shots costing a total of $1.80! It is estimated that the total cost will be $110 million. But guess what!? Over $72 million has already been raised, the goal is in sight! There are so many benefits to the union of Kiwanis and UNICEF:  Very little of the money fundraised goes to cover administrative costs  The communities that receive the medical technology also gain knowledge of how to prevent MNT in the future  $1.80 SAVES A LIFE!!!! (At least! The vaccines protect all children the mother births for a 5 year period!)

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award

MNT is traditionally contracted during the birthing process, due to unsanitary conditions. Not only is it important to provide the medicine to people in these third world countries, but it is also imperative that we provide them with the education to better their lives and practices. We, as Americans, sometimes forget that there are those who don’t have availability to preventative medicine like we do. By fundraising for the Eliminate Project, we not only give children opportunities for survival, but we give them the ability to enact change in their own world. It is a truly inspiring and worthwhile cause. Educational gathering in Laos

This map is representative of the progress that has been made in the process of eliminating MNT from the world. The epidemic has been eradicated in China, but many places in Africa still have a ways to go. The most recent announcement of elimination of MNT came on June 19, 2014 from Madagascar. It seems like a big job, but with all of us working together, it is an entirely achievable goal.

The Eliminate Project

Now, this all may seem like a huge, intimidating job, but here are a few statistics to put this all in into perspective: Yahoo! reports that Americans spend $426 billion on beauty products annually! With only 3/100th of 1% not purchased, (99.97% of beauty products could still be bought), we could forever cure the world of MNT!

Citizenlink says that Americans spend $91 billion on gambling each year. For 1/10th of 1% of that figure, MNT could be torn from the lengthy catalog that makes up the human susceptibility list.

The Associated Press recorded that Americans spend $56 billion on their pets every year. With 2/10 of 1% of what we spend on pets annually, we could kick MNT out of third world countries for good!

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award

Project Plan The Cloverdale Key Club has fundraised for the Eliminate Project for a few years now; but this year, since the campaign is in its final stretch, we were completely determined to make a huge impact. We began our fundraising efforts with a “One Dollar for Life” campaign that gained momentum and snowballed into further fundraising opportunities. Cloverdale always has members willing and ready to do their part in saving baby’s lives.

The Eliminate Project

Plan

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award

The 2014-2015 Eliminate Project fundraising efforts began with “One Dollar for Life”, (ODFL). The entire concept behind the ODFL philosophy is that if everyone does the smallest bit, great things can happen. If everyone gives a single dollar, we can end world crises that plague the human race. This organization, founded by Robert Freeman, has been active in building schools, water systems, and providing nourishment to those in third world countries. One of the best things about ODFL is that everything is laid out in an easy to follow fashion. The only other elements needed for a successful fundraiser are enthusiastic and dedicated members!

There are 5 simple steps to putting on a successful ODFL fundraiser:  Organize  Educate yourself  Enlist teachers  Publicize  Execute

The Eliminate Project

Plan

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award

In order to ensure the success of our ODFL campaign, we set up a committee to oversee the details of our fundraising efforts. The Cloverdale Key Club has a great deal of experience with committees and we know how effective they are in the planning process. We held four meetings over the course of the ODFL campaign. (Pictured above is a sample of one of our meeting agendas.)

The Eliminate Project

Plan

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award We made sure to announce our plans and ideas to our club at our weekly meetings to keep them updated and motivated. Below is a condensed report given by the committee chair from our April 30th committee meeting, and shared at the May 5th Key Club meeting.

The Eliminate Project

Plan

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award Not only did we hold committee meetings specific to ODFL, but as the Key Club year progressed, (later in the fall), we held meetings for the Eliminate Project as a whole. They were very productive and we maintained a strong core of members who attended these meetings, and who contributed to our fundraising ideas. Here are a couple sample agendas with corresponding pictures from the actual meetings. During this time frame, we held another four committee meetings.

We were also very good about using social media to communicate our plans with our members.

The Eliminate Project

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award We have also used the club website as a way to distribute information to our members. This particular webpage was placed there in order to spread the word about the cause, before actually following through with the entirety of our planning campaign.

This is an organizational note-taking guide that we used at one of our committee meetings.

Making sure that we had effective plans in place to implement our program was so important to us that we logged in 63 members hours in the planning process for our two spring and fall campaigns. 23 different members attended at least one of our eight committee meetings. This kind of club buy-in to the project goals made it much easier to begin the process of executing the project.

The Eliminate Project

Plan

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award

For the ODFL campaign, during the most intense schedule of activities, and in order to stay organized, we even created weekly to-do lists for our committee members. These helped us keep on top of our plans.

The Eliminate Project

Plan

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award

During one of our planning sessions we organized a phone “tree for contacting members and keeping them informed about the project. Highlighted members agreed to phone the students listed under their names. We felt that this would be an effective way to keep our members enthusiastic and involved.

Project Implementation For our series of fundraising activities to be successful, we knew we’d have to be organized and get people interested as well as educated about the cause. Our goal was to get involvement from the entire community by spreading the word; we were extremely successful. Not only did we involve our high school, but we gained attention from the people of Cloverdale, young and old. We even caught the attention of Kiwanis International with our fundraising efforts.

The Eliminate Project

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award

Since our club basically did two unique campaigns over the Key Club year, it’s best if we talk about them in chronological order. We’ll start with the “One Dollar For Life” project we spearheaded in the spring.

The first step in the process was to get our club members “fired up” to do the project! We knew we were going to attempt a “One Dollar For Life” fundraiser during the month of May, so in April, we invited the founder of ODFL, Mr. Robert Freeman, to come visit our club. We held a special lunchtime event, made sure attendance was good by offering pizza, and got an overwhelmingly positive response, with members very excited to get started!

The Eliminate Project

Implementation

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award

In the next step, we organized our committee, and began to develop our indepth plans for how we were going to put together our ODFL project. One additional goal of the committee was to figure out ways to include the community-at-large in our fundraising efforts. ODFL is a school-based ONLY program; we were determined to find ways to fundraise outside the school, as well.

As you can see, our committee meetings were well attended, with a chairperson who created an agenda in advance, and a secretary taking minutes on the computer. Minutes were distributed to committee members after each meeting, and detailed committee reports were given by chairperson at each subsequent Key Club meeting. This was done in order to keep member interest high.

We began our One Dollar for Life campaign by proposing the project to all of the teachers on campus (the letter shown above was sent out to the faculty members at CHS). We explained what the Eliminate Project was all about and how we could utilize ODFL at our school, not only to raise funds, but to uplift the students. Not only that, but we told them that if we reached our goal, we would throw them a little snack party in honor of their dedication and participation.

The first physical steps our members took were into the classrooms of each teacher on our Cloverdale High School campus. We had teams of people present the concept of ODFL to the students and mentioned that an ice cream party would be rewarded to the top fundraising class. We made sure to tell them that they would be saving lives with a two dollar donation, and even though the basis of One Dollar for Life is giving just a dollar, we encouraged them to give two dollars, because that amount saves a life and our student body is only made up of 400 students.

We also created announcements to read over the P.A. system every few days, to keep the students competitive and fired up about the cause. Below is an example of the things we said:

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award

Toward the end of the school campaign, we held a “One Dollar Day” which served as our final push. Anyone who donated a dollar that day got a sticker, and if the money in the jar at the end of the day was equivalent to the amount of students in that class, then they would receive See’s candy lollipops! We had a great deal of success on this day. (Below is a letter that we sent to the faculty about the “One Dollar Day.”)

We posted these updates in the hallways once every two days. It kept the classes aware of how they were doing in the competition against each other and spurred them to donate more!

The Eliminate Project

Implementation

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award In the middle of our campaign, we had classes asking if there was some way to make the ice cream party reward more fairly represent small classes. So, we decided to reward the class with the most money raised, and the class with the most raised per student. Then, each category ended up having classes that were closely competitive, so we really splurged. We ended up throwing ice cream parties for the top two classes in each category‌.FOUR classes in total! Here is the letter we sent to the faculty members whose classes won ice cream parties, and pictures of the students happily eating their ice cream.

Speaking of rewards, we followed through on our pledge to the teachers. Since the school fundraised more than the original goal, which was $800, (or $2 per student), we threw that promised snack party for the staff. We ended up bringing in $914.78 through the ODFL on-campus activities!

Not only did we involve the student body, but we approached the only other club on campus to request a donation. Our campus’s Interact Club was excited to donate a sum of $400 to our project! It was absolutely incredible, and we were extremely excited to get them on board with our efforts.

The Interact Club’s president came to our meeting to announce the good news.

This beautiful 4-page newsletter was created in order to keep people informed as well as update our members and our Kiwanis club about our Eliminate Project efforts.

The Eliminate Project

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award Another important factor in our fundraising was reaching out into the community. We went to several adult organizations and asked for donations. There, a couple of our members gave short speeches and provided them with statistics and dynamics of the Eliminate Project. We were met with warm smiles and receptive club members.

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award We also had members out in front of a local grocery store collect donations from generous individuals.

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award Our members set up a food booth at a local “Farm Yard Feed Day” event, and donated all the proceeds to the cause. This was actually an un-planned activity. At the last minute we were invited to participate as a vendor, and the Board voted to take the money raised and use it for the cause.

This is the sign used on the day of the event, at the concession booth, to advertise the cause. We made $75 and saved 41 lives with that day’s activity.

In Cloverdale, during the summer months, every Friday the streets in the downtown area fill with vendors of various sorts making up a Farmers Market. These Fridays are known as Friday Night Live. The streets are filled with happy people and the melodious tunes of live music. It is here that the people of Cloverdale come together to have fun on those summer evenings; whether it’s to dance, browse the different booths, or to catch up with friends. The Cloverdale Key Club took the opportunity to use these gatherings of people as a chance to fundraise! We sold “I Saved a Life” wristbands for $2. We also donated about a 100 of these bracelets to our Kiwanis club and they sold them to other Kiwanis members at the Governor’s Dinner held in our division during the month of June. A number of Kiwanis members in our division have been “sporting” the bracelet look ever since then!

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award Now it’s time to share details about our fall activities, which we centered around the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF theme. In the spirit of Halloween, we had a few members of our club put UNICEF boxes into local businesses. We went to 21 businesses during the first week of October. In addition to this, we also had members go out on Halloween, using the UNICEF boxes, and collect for the cause.

We brought in $120 from the boxes in the businesses!

On Halloween, we asked our school’s Interact Club to go out, too. Between the two clubs, we collected $389 that night.

The Eliminate Project

Implementation

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award We took advantage of the Halloween season in a different way, as well. We held a campus-wide party with an admission fee of $2, as a fundraiser for Eliminate. The party included food, a cake walk, a costume contest, and a ton of fun! We advertised the party through the principal’s morning announcements, had flyers and posters all over campus, and utilized social media to get people’s attention. We think the chocolate fountain may have been one of the reasons we had almost 100 students attend, and we made $203 for the cause that day!

The Eliminate Project

Implementation

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award For another activity, we decided to put a creative twist on candy sales and we ordered the supplies to make tubes of flavored sugar. This “Rainbow Dust” we marketed as “Brain Power Powder” and sold the week of Finals for $1 apiece. We held a tube-making session beforehand and filled the vials with the colored sugar so that our members could take them to sell in packs of ten. We’re actually still selling these, and have a lot more of the supplies, both sugar and test tubes. So, this is a project we plan to continue in the coming months. Meanwhile, at this point in time, we’ve made $50 from our “Brain Power Powder” sales.

Final Results Our club may be small, but we are sure able to pack a punch when it comes to fundraising. The Cloverdale Key Club was not afraid to take on the challenge of fundraising for the Eliminate Project. We had so many dedicated members back up our efforts with a tremendous passion for saving lives. We pulled off several extremely successful fundraisers over a period of several months. Our members face challenges head-on and refuse to be defeated by any obstacles that stand in our way. We are persistent and enthusiastic, but we know when our community has reached its limits. We were extremely excited to pursue different and unique methods of fundraising that proved to be quite successful! Overall, our project was a huge success, and our club has saved over 2,600 lives this year! We’re not just stopping there though, our success will catapult us into bigger and better fundraisers; our members understand what a tangible goal Kiwanis International has set for us, and we know that we can eliminate MNT from the world.

A local business owner in our community found out about what we were doing and approached our club with a proposal. She runs an allnatural beauty supply business and each year, a portion of her proceeds are donated to a charity. This year she chose the Eliminate Project as the cause to which she would contribute. After her sales every week at Friday Night Live events, she cut us a check for $1000! We were absolutely floored and amazed by her generosity! This just goes to show that when a club sets out to fundraise for a cause and has members who are excited and educated about where the money is going, that motivation has the power to spread to others. (Below is a picture of her giving the check to our club Treasurer.)

As shown by the chart on the previous page, our members have spent 172 hours on the Eliminate Project this year, so far. With a population of only 33 members, it’s safe to say the Cloverdale Key Club has done some amazing work. We have a strong core group of members who are genuinely dedicated to the cause. They have spent a great many hours in both the planning and implementation of the program. The ability to plan and organize is important when tackling a campaign for a cause like the Eliminate Project; it’s hard work, but it’s well worth the effort. It feels good to give back, whether it’s to the local community, or on a more global scale. We’re all people, and we all deserve a chance at life.

Agenda for the day

We were so excited about the results of our project, that we wanted to share our success strategies with the rest of our Key Club division. We figured that, if we could be so successful, so could others from our nearby Key Clubs. So, we put together a special “Eliminators Training Day”, which lasted 3 hours and was attended by 5 other clubs. We created the agenda for the day, developed flyers to advertise the event, contacted Robert Freeman from “One Dollar for Life” and asked him to speak, and created a PowerPoint presentation, which we shared.

The Eliminate Project

Results

CLOVERDALE HIGH SCHOOL K E Y C L U B Single Service Award Our Key Clubbers have gained a broader perspective of servant leadership from their experiences with our “Eliminators” project. Many of our members are amazed by what they can do with $1.80; and we have spread that philosophical concept into the rest of our school and community-at-large. Although the monetary results are grand and glorious, it is through the saving of lives that our members are able to gain a sense of real pride. We are able to understand that even those of us who have less control over our lives than we might prefer, can make a difference in the world. So many people don’t understand that their small actions, when compounded together, can impact so much. In reality, that’s what it takes to actually change the world. The Eliminate Project enables people to comprehend that they can save lives, which is a gift in itself. It’s this type of spark that leads people to do bigger and better things. The Eliminate Project and ODFL are unique in that they empower people, and challenge the human race to give what may seem the smallest bit, knowing that what they think is “small” is “huge” to someone else who may be less fortunate. This concept, when applied, has the ability to create a generation of people dedicated to noticing those who are less blessed, while actually having a knowledge base to implement change for the better. It’s a revolutionary concept that’s taking our world by storm.

Public Awareness The goals we set weren’t just monetary; we wanted to make sure that the word got out about the cause and that people gained more awareness of the needs of others outside of our local community. With a population in our town of fewer than 9,000, those who live in Cloverdale share many bonds and ties to one another. When we work together, goals that may at first seem impossible, become possible. Our close knit community tends to show a great deal of enthusiasm for the Cloverdale Key Club, and supports us in our endeavors. Once we got the word out to the locals, they did not hesitate to contribute what they could to our fundraising efforts. Many greet the members of our club with smiles and a quick chat about their lives and what’s going on. These types of bonds and connections have been significant in implementing successful fundraisers. Advertising is one of the best ways to get attention, so our club spread flyers around town, put articles in the local newspaper, utilized social media, and spread the word, just by talking about the cause. It’s truly amazing what can be done when the community is entirely supportive. O

The Cloverdale Key Club is working on something BIG, and we’d like to reach out to the community for help. They have recently begun a campaign for the Eliminate Project. What’s the Eliminate Project? Well, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces in order to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the world. This disease steals the lives of 60,000 babies each year. People in third world countries don’t have medical advancements that are available to those of us in the United States. When a child is born, it’s almost always in unsanitary conditions. When the umbilical cord is cut, the disease is transferred to both the mother and the child. This baby becomes sensitive to light, touch and sound. Babies struck with this disease are put in a dark room, alone, and left to die. But here’s the thing; neonatal tetanus is 100% preventable. It costs $1.80 in order to provide vaccines to a mother in a foreign country. These vaccines save her and any children she has within a 5 year period. The awesome thing about this project is that the tetanus doesn’t come back to these countries because Kiwanis and UNICEF provide these people with the education and knowledge to prevent it in the future. In addition to this, all of the funds collected for the project go directly to aid these countries; none of it is used for administrative costs; meaning that if someone donates $2, they have ACTUALLY saved a life. Kiwanis International’s goal is to rid MNT from the world, which takes about $110 million. But guess what? They’ve raised 50 of that 110 million; only 60 to go! To put this in perspective, here are a few shocking statistics. On average, Americans spend $426 billion on beauty products annually. That means with 3/100ths of 1% of what Americans spend on beautification, we could rid the world of the form of tetanus. The Cloverdale Key Club would like to inform the community of the opportunities we are presenting for you to take your part in their project. They have begun a school-wide campaign, and after two days, collected enough funds to save 110 lives! Look for them around the community; they’ll be stationed outside of Ray’s Food Place for a few days, they’ll be at a few Friday Night Live events, selling various items, and they’ll be hunting for donations from a variety of sources. The Cloverdale Key Club is doing their part in saving babies. REMEMBER - All it takes is some pocket change to live with the satisfaction of knowing you saved a life.

Member Participation Our members have been dedicated and willing to serve since day one, and that has continued on through our efforts with the Eliminators Project. We are happy to say that 100% of our members contributed to our campaign efforts in some way or another. From donations to our ODFL campaign, to attendance at the Halloween party, our members were engaged and willing to do what it took to go the extra mile and log in a phenomenal amount of service. We are beginning to understand the needs of others and the best ways to serve the less fortunate. With a cause like Eliminate, we understand how simple and easy it is to save lives and give others the same chance at life that we have so graciously been given. It’s all about perspective; if we were the mothers and children in those third countries, wouldn’t we want to be saved? We would. We have the power to end a deadly disease, we have the power to stop its harmful, violent effects; we can and we will. If anything, our members are proof of what can be done with a little elbow grease and a lot of planning and organization. We’ll leave a lasting impact on the world, and that’s pretty darn cool.

We have also invited clubs from the rest of Division 32 (both Key Clubs and Kiwanis Clubs). Our Key Club already has strong bonds with our sponsoring Kiwanis, but we hope that this event will only bring us closer. Not only are we preparing to do a fundraiser with our Kiwanis Club, but we will be doing even more fundraising within our school and in the community. We truly want to change the world for the better, and we know that we can do it, one cent at a time.
