At the Redwood Empire Food Bank

It was so heart-warming to play and sing Christmas carols to the patients at the convalescent hospital. This was an addon activity on the day we decorated gingerbread cookies with them as part of our HUGS Project!

Hello Everyone, As my term comes nearer to its end, I have to say that this year was one crazy year! There have been many challenges and many rewards! It is about that time of the year that we begin electing new officers for our 2019-20 Key Club term! It is important to everyone that next year we have some really good officers. Without strong leaders we will not be able to manage our club, because we do so much! Be sure to think about whether or not you want to be an officer for the next Key Club year. Applications are being distributed right now; and the last weeks of January are a time to reflect upon your Key Club goals for the future. Do you want to become a more active leader in the club? The new Key Club year will start at the April District Convention. This means that our newly elected officers will begin to take over by mid-April. There is always a transition period when the current officers train the new officers, and duties are shared, usually for most of April and May. Whether or not you decide to be an officer candidate, be sure to come to our first meeting in February. This is the date when our elections will take place. Hope to see all of you there! Hope to see a lot of you stepping forward to help operate the club for next year!

By Paula Toledo Key Club is an organization that improves people’s lives; and for me, I’m noticing that fact more and more. Not only have we touched the lives of the patients at the Cloverdale HealthCare Center with our HUGS Project, (our newest service effort), but we have shown our members what they can accomplish through simple kindness. In 2018 we connected with our members in ways that helped us to become more of a Kiwanis/Key Club family. Now, as we head into 2019, with more goals to accomplish, remember that DCON is right around the corner! Hopefully, we will have a lot of members who will find it amazing. Please consider attending this year’s District Convention, “Service in Wonderland”. If you’ve been a hard-working member, you will definitely deserve the experience! It’s something you will never forget! Sign-ups for DCON will be happening in the first two weeks of February. Make that commitment NOW!

Kiwanis Crab Feed

It was another successful Crab Feed! We raised an astonishing $1,600 in tips! It was a fun night, with the Key Clubbers on their feet rushing back and forth between the kitchen and the tables all night. We served a lot of crab!

Secret Santa Pal Gift Exchange

By Alex Visconti The Kiwanis and Key Club came together for the holidays and switched names, giving one another a random name for gift giving. The budget was $10 per gift, but often Key Clubbers and Kiwanis went well over this. Once we bought the gifts and wrapped them, we got together at a morning Kiwanis meeting, at Zini’s Diner, and opened what Kiwanis gave us; and we handed off our gifts to them. It was pretty exciting, getting things we had put on our lists, or even getting much more than we had asked for!

Christmas Bake Sale

By Neidi Calvillo This year, the Kiwanis Christmas Bake Sale was a success! Everyone had so much fun and we were all happy with the results. Each Key Clubber wanting to participate tried to bring at least one item for the auction. Our generous Kiwanis spent $615! On behalf of the Cloverdale Key Club, I can say we are all very grateful. The same day, the Secret Santa Pal gift exchange took place. This made everyone have even more fun! It was a very good way to finish off 2018 with our wonderful Cloverdale Kiwanis!

Helping Our Kiwanis Caroling at the HealthCare Center

By Danielle Neustadt On Sunday, December 16th, a few of our Key Club members attended caroling with the Kiwanis at the Cloverdale HealthCare Center. The Key Club members, along with the Kiwanis members, sang a number of Christmas carols to the residents there. It was a blast! There were snacks, and a lot of memorable music. Gonzalo played the saxophone and we had a pianist accompany us. It was a great time to bond with the residents and get into the Christmas spirit!

Working at the Food Pantry

We spent two Friday afternoons in December helping our Kiwanis operate the Cloverdale Food Pantry!

HUGS Project

Paula Toledo, Grant Writer Extraordinaire

“Cloverdale High School Key Club was selected to receive a US$300 Youth Opportunities Fund Grant for The HUGS Project, (Helping our members to Understand the importance of Geriatric Service). With nearly 140 applicants the YOF Committee had a difficult time selecting this year’s grant recipients. So, your club should be very proud of the application it presented.”

HUGS Project Every Wednesday (We either play Bingo or do a special project with the hospital patients)

On other Wednesdays our members played Bingo with the patients at the Cloverdale HealthCare Center. Each week, more and more members are participating and finding that it’s fun to be with these often neglected, but so appreciative people!

A Division Conclave is a DCM where the clubs in the division vote for the next Lt. Governor. We were supposed to hold our Division 32 Conclave on January 12th. There were no candidates at that time. We now have at least one candidate…so note This year’s voting will take place on Saturday, February 2nd. We’ll be going to Santa Rosa for a meeting at Cardinal Newman High School, leaving CHS at 9:30 a.m. and returning about 12:30 p.m. Mark your calendars, as this is a VERY IMPORTANT date! Key Club International by-laws do not allow public campaigning for a candidate. So, we can’t do that here…BUT the next LTG for Division 32 could be from Cloverdale! Let’s go to this DCM & support all the students willing to run for this position!

This could be a bright beginning for one of our very own soaring eagles!

Shine Days By Delia Vargas Each Shine Day includes a different activity; every one of them is as fun as the last! They usually have themes that go with what month we are in, so in October we made candy applies, and in December we did gingerbread cookies. The kids in the Special Day Class seem to really enjoy them. They step out of their comfort zones a little, and do activities that end up being fun! We all talk with one another and play games that aren’t even a part of the activity that we are doing. For example, with the candy apples, while we were waiting our turn, we had “sword fights” with the popsicle sticks we used to spear the apples. Or, we tried to juggle with the M&M’s we used. The games that we play always are fun and it feels good to see them happy. It is a good feeling to help the Special Day Class students. They don’t get to interact with others all that often. Many of them are stuck in a single classroom all day long. For December, our project was to decorate gingerbread cookies.

The term “Shine Day” means to shine a light into the lives of the disabled. Each time we sponsor an activity with the Special Day Class, we’re forming a new “Bright Beginning” in their lives!

Attending the Knights of Columbus Dinner was a very rewarding time for us. It was nice to give back to the community in this way. It was hectic, and we never had a dull moment!

Final preparations for the big night included committee meetings, visits to a Lions Club meeting and other Kiwanis Clubs to sell tickets, and lots of dancing practice!

The evening was a huge success, from the food, to the dancers, to the costume contest, and finally the movie! We were actually helping our Kiwanis Club raise the money they had obligated themselves to give us for the Save the Rain cause. The profit was

$2450!
