Officers Training Conference

Kicking off the meeting with the Key Club Pledge!

Presidents for this Key Club year! Strike a pose, vogue!

Icebreaker anyone? One treasurer for Claire! (The heading behind this one says it all, except what happened to our LTG?!)

At the Officers Training Conference on June 10th we had 13 members, 2 advisors, and 1 guest attend. We held our Divisional Council Meeting for June with a guest speaker from the Redwood Empire Food Bank, Billy Bartz. About halfway through, we broke up into groups for our officer training. Then we returned for the conclusion of our DCM, we voted on our new division t-shirt design. The majority of the group wanted to combine the two designs made by Cloverdale Key Club members Kim Bernal and Paul Cabrera. The final design is up for critique at the next DCM in Fort Bragg, we will be doing a beach clean-up when we go there.

Coming soon: July DCM in Fort Bragg. Don’t forget your sunscreen!

Redwood Empire Food Bank Ending Hunger in Sonoma County

The Mission of the REFB: To end hunger in our community. We define ending hunger as having in place a community response system that makes adequate nutrition assistance available and accessible to anyone in need of help. The Redwood Empire Food Bank (REFB) ends hunger in Sonoma County through the REFB's Hunger Initiatives and collaboration with 149 partner agencies with 229 programs located in every city, town and unincorporated area of Sonoma County. Together we end hunger.

Cloverdale got 309,000 meals from the Redwood Empire Food Bank this past year!

Cloverdale 309,000 meals West County 901,000 meals

Healdsburg 716,000 meals Windsor 727,000 meals Santa Rosa area 4,484,000 meals Rohnert Park/Cotati 551,000 meals

Sonoma Valley 538,000 meals Petaluma 1,057,000 meals

Hunger 101 Course Hunger exists in Sonoma County - Find out how people get food when they need it! Hunger 101 is a thought-provoking way for your business, school, congregation, or service group, to learn about hunger in our community. We designed this hands-on learning experience for groups of 10 to 30 students. Geared towards adults, this one hour class is free of charge and can be conducted here at REFB, or at a meeting place of your choice.

This just in: Every 3rd Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon is a monthly Key Club volunteer day at the Redwood Empire Food Bank.

Project Jump Start

H O W C A

The most crucial years in a person’s life are the beginning years. It is essential that during this time a child is given the best opportunities possible. That is why Cali-Nev-Ha has committed its next two years to focusing on the first 5 years of a child’s life. In doing so, we will be participating in levels of service from meeting our local community needs to helping on an international scale. This project focuses on children’s education, health, safety, and well being. We will try to give children an equal opportunity to all experience a fresh and vibrant beginning: a Jump Start!

So stylish!

R o a s t i n g S’ m o r e s !

First summer Board meeting of the entire year…. if you thought the school year ones were long then you’d be in for a big surprise at this meeting! We discussed many housekeeping points for this upcoming year and planned fundraising ideas for the summer. Afterwards we swam in Ms. Cummins’ pool while we waited for a BBQ dinner. After dinner we played Taboo, sat around a campfire and made S’mores. We left the next morning after getting little to no sleep the night before.

Learning to swim!

MAJOR DISTRACTION!!! The next board meeting is July 24th. Don’t forget that we also have a regular meeting for all members on July 12th!

The ELIMINATE Project With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take $110 million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.

Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th century. Now, they are eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. And in doing so, the project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional life-saving health care. The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families.

25 Countries that have eliminated maternal and neonatal tetanus Africa (20) Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Comoros, Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe Middle East (1) Turkey Asian Pacific (4) Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Vietnam

34 countries with maternal and neonatal tetanus Africa (22) Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Cote D’Ivoire, DRC (Congo), Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritania, Mali, Gabon, The Gambia, Guinea, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania Middle East (5) Afghanistan, India (18 of 33 states), Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen The Americas (1) Haiti Asian Pacific (6) China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Papua New Guinea, Philippines

Do your part: fundraise for ELIMINATE by selling tickets for our family dinner/game night on August 25th!

Vice President’s Message We as Vice-Presidents of Cloverdale Key Club, plan to recruit as many members as we can for the 2012-2013 school year. We will also help assist the Presidents if they need it; we are even willing to help our LTG Jacob. But back to our main goal, not only do we want to encourage new recruits to stay, but we want to encourage them to stay for the fun service projects we do, as well as learn how they can make fundraising fun. We want them to experience as many events, fundraisers and get togethers… to actually say, “Wow they were right, Key Club is fun.” By telling them about our experiences, we hope to accomplish this goal. We can’t forget to mention how nice our Kiwanis members are when it comes to rides for our events and saying a simple, “Thank you, we appreciate what you do for us”, our Kiwanis Club knows we can count on them and we hope that hey can count on us as well. We want them to know that it’s not all about the trips, such as RTC, Fall Rally, Key Leader, DCON, or ICON, but about giving back to our community when it comes to helping out at local events. And it’s a funny thing about giving…… we get rewarded for what we do most of the time; but we also get to have a good time with our friends while helping. With all this said, we hope you see us as not only a Club but a Family working together to make everything better! *Anna Aguilar Yari Sanchez Isidro Gonzalez

Did you know? That the original Key Club logo had 52 knots symbolizing 52 weeks of service!
