March of Dimes A Fighting Chance For Every Baby

Prematurity is the #1 killer of babies in the United States. The March of Dimes organization is working to change that and help more moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies. From polio to prematurity the March of Dimes has focused on researching the problems that threaten children and is finding ways to prevent them.

What is it?

The March of Dimes is a US nonprofit organization that works to improve the health of mothers and babies. After decades of increases, the rate of premature birth in the US has now been on a steady decline for the last several years. This decline – to 9.6 % today – has saved thousands of babies from being born too soon. Despite this progress, about 380,000 babies are born prematurely each year. And the March of Dimes has worked hard to change this, with raising an incredible $2.3 billion to benefit all babies.

Fundraising Ideas

Hold a lockup Restaurant March For Babies Night Out Pie a Key Clubber/Teacher in the Face Sell great things Create/Sell customized T-Shirts Cutest Baby Contest Hold a Wonder Walk Organize a fundraising Scavenger Hunt

Hold a Lockup Have a bunch of willing adults dress up in striped pajamas and lock them up in a “cell. From there, people can bail them out for charity. Have them write letters beforehand to local businesses, friends and family to solicit donations for bail. They can also make calls, while locked up, to raise money.

Pie In the Face

Talk to teachers about if they would like to participate in a “Pie a Key Clubber or Teacher In the Face fundraiser. Then, discuss with school principal about holding this fundraiser during lunch at school. Advertise this event and when the day comes, charge a student or teacher to pie someone in the face.

Cutest Baby Contest

Since the March of Dimes is about babies, why not include them in your fundraising efforts? Hold a cutest baby contest or pageant. Invite friends, family and members of your community to bring their babies to a selected venue and participate in a pageant. Have a panel of judges vote on the most beautiful baby girl or boy. Offer pictures for a small fee, charge for admission and charge for entrance into the contest.

Scavenger Hunt

Many local businesses and restaurants will participate in a Community Scavenger Hunt. Begin by contacting numerous businesses and restaurants in your community and ask each to participate by keeping a bowl of clues on hand for participants on the appointed evening: each clue would lead to the next stop. You can also ask business owners to donate a small freebie prize. Each participant would then pay a fee to play in the Scavenger Hunt. Make sure to encourage participants to be kind towards businesses.
